William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon and died in 1618. He married Anne Hathaway in 1582 and had three children. By 1592, Shakespeare was a prominent playwright and actor in London, and by 1594 he was a main actor and shareholder of the Lord Chamberlain's Men. Shakespeare's company built the Globe Theatre in 1599 and presented plays there, as well as at court and universities. Shakespeare wrote comedies, tragedies, and histories, some of his most famous works including Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Macbeth.
