Henry Purcell was an influential English composer who lived from 1659-1695. Some of his most notable works included Dido and Aeneas, which is considered the first English opera, and music he composed for King James II's coronation in 1685. Purcell had a musical career that started as a young chorister and led him to positions such as organist at Westminster Abbey. He died at the height of his career and made major contributions to the flowering of English Baroque music.
