William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564 to a merchant family. He married Anne Hathaway in 1582 and had three children, though one died in childhood. Shakespeare left Stratford for London in the 1580s where he joined a theatre company and began writing plays and acting. He found great success, becoming a wealthy man and part-owner of The Globe theatre. Shakespeare wrote 37 plays, 154 sonnets, and some long poems before retiring to Stratford in 1610, where he died in 1616.
