Georg Friedrich Handel was a German-born Baroque composer who is best known for his oratorio Messiah. He completed the music for Messiah in just 24 days. Much of the libretto comes from the Old Testament and prophesies the coming of the Messiah. Some of the most famous parts of Messiah include the "Hallelujah" chorus and the finale "Worthy is the Lamb." Handel was also known for his Water Music, which premiered on the River Thames for King George I, who enjoyed it so much he had Handel perform it three times. Later in life, Handel lost his sight and was eventually buried in Westminster Abbey among other renowned figures.

In the years following his move from Salzburg to Vienna in 1781, Mozart developed a fascination for Baroque music, especially the compositions of J.S. Bach and Handel. Baron Gottfried van Swieten, Mozart's and later, Beethoven's, friend and patron and a wealthy diplomat and amateur musician, had encouraged Mozart to study the manuscript copies of these Baroque masters which he had archived in his personal library. von Swieten had been arranging regular private performances of Baroque music the private residences of his aristocratic Viennese colleagues, eventually asking Mozart to curate and direct these events. The Baron had earlier founded the Geselschafft der Associerten (The Society of Associates), an exclusive club that offered oratorios at Lenten and Easter. By the time van Swieten offered a copy of Messiah and a German text to Mozart in 1789, he (Mozart) had already transcribed Handel’s Acis and Galatea, and would go on in the following year to transcribe Handel’s Ode to St Cecilia and Alexander’s Feast.
Mozart set his transcription of Messiah, entitled Der Messias (KV 572), to a 1775 German translation of the oratorio by Christoph Daniel Ebeling, which Ebeling had in turn adapted from an earlier eponymous epic poem by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock.
Der Messias is neither a radical rethinking of Handel’s original work, nor a cavalier rescoring by Mozart done simply as a lark. Although only 48 years separated Messiah’s premiere and Mozart’s 1789 transcription, an enormous change had occurred in musical style. Handel lived and wrote squarely within the idiom and constraints of the Baroque era, whereas Mozart composed in the conventions of Classical Style. By Mozart’s time, symphonic orchestras were populated by many different instruments, each lending its own tonal color, together giving a more textured sound than that of the simpler “symphonic bands” of strings and continuo, with occasional trumpets, of Handel’s time. - 2. Handel was born in Halle, Germany.
- 3. He was born the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach.
- 4. Handel’s Messiah This work is his most famous creation and is among the most popular works in the Western choral literature.
- 5. Handel completed the music in just 24 days and gave to Charles Jennens to create the lyrics.
- 6. After he finished composing The Messiah, Handel is said to have made the following statement: “I did think I saw Heaven before me and the great God himself.”
- 7. Much of the libretto comes from the Old Testament. The first section draws heavily from the book of Isaiah; that which prophesies the coming of the Messiah. There are few quotations from the Gospels; these are at the end of the first and the beginning of the second sections. They comprise the Angel going to the shepherds in Luke, two enigmatic quotations from Matthew and one from John: "Behold the Lamb of God". The rest of the second section is composed of prophecies from Isaiah and quotations from the evangelists. The third section includes one quotation from Job Job ("I know that my Redeemer liveth"), the rest primarily from First Corinthians. Interesting, too, is the interpolation of choruses from Revelation. The well-known "Hallelujah" chorus at the end of Part II and the finale chorus "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain" (“ Amen” ") are both taken from Revelation —a book of prophecies in the New Testament. The libretto was compiled by Charles Jennens and consists of fragments of verses from the King James Bible . Jennens conceived of the work much as an opera with three acts, each comprised of several scenes.
- 9. The Water Music is a collection of orchestral movements, composed by Handel. It premiered in the summer of 1717 when King George I requested a concert on the River Thames. The concert was performed by 50 musicians that joined King George I on his barge. King George I was said to have loved it so much that he ordered Handel to play the suites three times on the trip.
- 10. Like Beethoven lost his hearing, Handel lost his sight.
- 11. Handel was buried in Westminster Abbey.
