George Frideric Handel was a renowned German-English Baroque composer who was best known for his oratorios, particularly Messiah. He was born in Germany in 1685 to a wealthy father who disapproved of music as a career. Handel established himself early as a successful composer and conductor in Germany and England. In his later career, he found great success with oratorios in England as tastes shifted away from Italian opera. Handel experienced vision loss later in life but remained a hugely influential composer until his death in 1759, after which he was honored with burial in Westminster Abbey.
