Intertextuality in my music video:
The first intertextual reference in my music video is to 80s
based, American sitcom Freaksand Geeks. Itmay seem a
bizarrereference but the show itself uses costume brilliantly.
The show explores different aspects of high schoollife and
helps the audience to understand people through their
costume. For example, the freaks attend schoolin their denim
jackets and ripped jeans which separates them from the rest
of the school. In my music video, I wantto reflect this idea that
costume can help teach the audience a bit about the
character. For example, one of the shots of my characters will
show a massiverip in her dungarees, which is intended to
teach the audience that she is broken etc.
The second intertextual reference in my music video is to another American show, How I
met your mother. This show uses a narrator throughoutthe show which I think is effective,
especially when compared to my music video. The show’s main character is telling a story
of the past, which is similar to my music video as my video explores this idea that the two
characters are telling a story, and I decided to usethe show as inspiration in terms of it
being in a narrator-typestyle.
There are many motifs in media texts that I could makean intertextual reference to, but for
me the best is the Joker card, in The Dark Knight. As soon as a shotof the card the audience
knows whatis going on, and I wanted to use my own motif, a newton’s cradle, to have this
sortof effect.
The final intertextual reference is to Gotye’s music video for ‘Somebody that I used to
know’. The music video is essentially someone telling a story, and it uses a lot of closeups
of the artist/ character to make it clear who’s speaking etc. I personally find this effective in
terms of allowing the music video to conform to Goodwin’s theory of a narrativeand lyrical
relationship, as well as the demand of the record label to show off the artist. In my music
video the male character will be used as this sortof character/artist telling the story.
