Intertexuality is the referencing of an already existing media product in the
original product. It is used in music videos to keep something familiar for
the audience to identify and also create a sense of continuity and reality in
texts. It signifies the music video and the star image. Some texts directly
refer to each other for example parodies while others don't give a direct
reference.
Simpsons is a great example of interexuality. It uses references from different
movies, music videos and artworks in its episodes.
Here, they used the famous artwork of In this picture they used Beatles
Salvador Deli "The persistence of memory”. the famous band's reference.

refers to the hit movie of the 80s “Back to the future. Throughout the
episode it uses bits from the movie.
Another example of intertexuality is Madonna's famous tribute to Marilyn
Monroe in her video, "Material girl“. Madonna wears a similar dress and
has a similar background to Marilyn Monroe in her video.
Another intertextual reference of Marylin Monroe is when Lana Del Rey’s
Video of National Anthem starts with Intertextually referencing Marylin
Monroe singing “Happy Birthday President” by Lana singing the song. She
also wore a similar dress to Marylin Monroe and the video started in black
and white.
In Katy Perry's roar, she makes intertextual references to the classic song,
"Eye of the tiger" referencing a survivor's classic song showing the
audience how she has become a survivor.

throughout the video. The setting of the video is a castle which refers to a
fairytale. The singer is also wearing a ball gown which add to it. The story
and the lyrics of the song refer to Shekesphere’s play, “Romeo and Juliet”.
There are many other examples of intertextual references as well. Producers
use these so that the audience can relate to the music video more. This is
also a technique of collecting a higher revenue as when audience can
relate to it or if a video refers to an already existing super hit media
