creativityandoriginality frommyownmusicvideo.
The firstreference willbe tothe 1999 AmericanTV show ‘Freaksand Geeks’.The show followsa
groupof teenagersgoingthroughhighschool.The maincharacter,Lindsay,constantlytriestofind
herself insocietybyattemptingdifferentactivates,findingnew friendsanddeviatingfromher
normal life.Aswell asthis,the groupsrepresentedinthe show clearlygenerate theirownidentities.
These identitiescanbe identifiedthroughtheirclothing,whichisthe ideathatIwill be takingon
board withmyvideo.The charactersinthe narrative will be wearingclothingtoconnote different
ideas(heavilyexplainedinmy‘Costumes’ blogpost).Anexample beingof how the clothingwornby
the male (me) will connote anattempttobe part of societal culture. Alternatively, how the clothing
wornby the female will expressmore of arelaxedpopularityandexpressioninsociety.Overall,this
intertextualreferenceisn’tstrictlyfoundedbythe TV show ‘Freaksand Geeks’ yet itgivesa prime
example of howthismethodof usingclothingtoconnote ideascanbe effective inmediatexts.
Anotherreferencewillbe toinceptionandthe implementationof atokento illustrate timeand
continuums.Regardlessof the ‘dream’aspect,Iwill construct atimelinewiththe use of anewtons
cradle. The cradle will adda sense of control to the videoasit issomethingthatcan be set and
stopped.Alongsidethis,toemphasise the narrative,the cradle will be avisual metaphorastohow
actionshave consequences. Iwill presentashot of the newtons cradle beingsetatthe start of the
videotocreate an enigmatictimestamp,tothenatthe endof the videohave the male character
(me) stopthe motionof the cradle to developastrongof control or recapping.The overall
intertextualreferenceisquite vague,yetitillustrateshow atimelinecaneasilybe manipulated
througha motif/prop.Somethingthatisgreatlyimportanttomymusicvideoasmy aimto generate
parallel perspectivesandmulti-strandnarrativesthroughasingle storyand timeline.The cradle
overall will actasa motif toreinforce the themeswithinthe video.
To conclude,these referenceswere thoughtfullychosentobenefitmymusicvideoandthe narrative
that isdesiredtobe constructed. Seeingevidence inothertextsgivesjustificationforwhatIwold
like toachieve nomatterif the connotationisvague or replicated.Inturn,generatingafinal product
that showsgreatunderstandingof otherinfluences.
