Starting in the late 1880s,Thomas
Edison and Nicola Tesla were
embroiled in a battle now known as
‘The War of currents’.
But today most of our electrical
gadgets run on DC.

An electric system that
creates,distributes,stores and
consumes Direct current(DC)
electricity to power a wide
variety of electrical devices in
and around buildings, as an
island or connected to the grid.

• Many devices have different
voltages.
• Selling power back to the power
supply company.
• Conversion to AC for certain devices.
• Leakage currents.

10. BENEFITS OF DC MICRO GRID
• Cost of electrification is less compared to
electrification by individual solar home
system.
• Higher efficiency compared to AC micro
grid.
• Highly reliable due to the absence of
inverter and centralized storage.
• Less investment.
• Transmission losses get reduced.

11. DC MICROGRIDS IN INDIA
• First solar DC micro-grid -commissioned
almost 30 years back in a small village in
Uttar Pradesh.
• In 2010, Mera Gaon Power (MGP) piloted
the DC micro-grid technology.
• In 2010, another pilot project was initiated
by TERI which served around 10 households
in Jagdishpur district, UP.
• UPNEDA developed a 1.2 kW DC micro-grid
plant in the year 2011-12 in mathia village to
serve up to 200 households.

12. CONCLUSION
 With large number of un-electrified hamlets,
potential market for DC micro-grids in India is
huge.
 DC micro-grids can provide a reliable,
flexible, efficient and sustainable electricity
supply at a lower cost with greater
effectiveness.
 Micro-grids provides good prospects for
private sector and social enterprises and serve
large number of population.
