Karl Landsteiner discovered the ABO blood group system in 1901 which classified blood into A, B, AB and O groups and allowed for safe blood transfusions. The ABO and Rh blood grouping systems are based on detecting agglutination reactions between antigens on red blood cells and antibodies in plasma through a protocol using agglutination to identify a person's blood group which is important for blood transfusions.
