This document describes a study that used four different methods to assign weights to 17 criteria for selecting potential landfill sites in Najaf, Iraq. The four weighting methods were: ranking, rating, pairwise comparison, and trade-off. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) were used to integrate the weighted criteria and identify suitable landfill locations. For each weighting method, GIS and MCDA were applied to select potential sites. The results from pairwise comparison and ranking were similar, selecting five sites, while trade-off and rating identified more than five sites.

This document is a thesis submitted by Jose Francisco Lafragueta in partial fulfillment of a Master of Science degree in Energy and Environmental Management at Glasgow Caledonian University. The thesis develops a GIS-based model to create a forest fire risk map for an area in Huesca, Spain. Eight factors are used - vegetation, slope, aspect, elevation, distance to roads, railroads, camping sites and settlements. MCE techniques, including the AHP method, are used to rate the factors, combine them and generate a weighting scheme to produce the final forest fire risk map. The results are validated using a 10-year fire record, showing most previous fires occurred in high or very high risk areas.

Schistosomiasis is often endemic in rural hard to reach areas of the world, making ground control efforts difficult. Remote sensing is useful because of its ability to capture images over wide temporal and spatial scales, providing risk assessments at low cost. Initial predictive risk models were based off the ecological requirements of the disease’s intermediary host, the snail. An at- tempt at creating a climatologically based risk map for Ghana is presented. The variables chosen were in close agreement with those used in the literature. The limitations of a regional model is its lack of sensitivity to the focality of schistosomiasis. It has been suggested that models can be refined by including factors of both hosts, snails and humans. Creating predictive models that fit an assortment of Schistosoma, snail species, and human factors, over both regional and local scales is necessary to understanding Schistosomiasis in Africa.

The document evaluates the performance of the TRMM Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) product in estimating daily precipitation in the Central Andes region, compared to gauge measurements. It finds large biases in daily precipitation amounts from TMPA for the regions of Cuzco, Peru and La Paz, Bolivia, though strong precipitation events are generally detected. Correlation with gauge data increases significantly when aggregating TMPA estimates to longer time periods like weekly or monthly sums. Spatial aggregation has little effect on performance. The document proposes blending TMPA with daily gauge data to improve daily estimates.

Alertas Tempranas de Pérdida de Bosques tropicales en Perú usando Landsat

Desde el 16 de marzo del 2017 el Programa Nacional de Conservación de Bosques para la Mitigación del Cambio Climático (PNCBMCC) del Ministerio del Ambiente de Perú (MINAM) viene implementando una metodología para la detección de alertas tempranas de la pérdida de cobertura de bosques húmedos tropicales de Perú, la detección se hace cada semana usando imágenes de Landsat 7 y 8 calibradas a reflectancia al tope de la atmosfera (TOA). La cobertura de nubes, neblina y sombra son enmascaradas de las imágenes y para la detección de la pérdida de cobertura de bosque se desarrolló una técnica de análisis de mixtura espectral (SMA) que denominamos desmezcla espectral directa (DSU), el modelo de desmezcla espectral fue construido a partir de los endmembers de bosque primario y la pérdida de cobertura de bosques. Se detectó hasta un 25% de pérdida de cobertura de bosque dentro de un pixel de Landsat. Hasta el 25 de diciembre del 2017 se usaron 500 imágenes Landsat y se detectaron 137 142.99 ha de pérdida de cobertura de bosques húmedos tropicales, esta pérdida incluye la deforestación por expansión agropecuaria, actividades extractivas ilegales o informales, que puede incluir la apertura de caminos para la tala selectiva, se detecta de igual forma las pérdida natural de bosques producida por vientos huracanados, deslizamientos de tierra en áreas montañosas con fuerte pendiente, entre otros. Los resultados fueron verificados con imágenes satelitales de alta resolución espacial, sobrevuelos y trabajo de campo. La evaluación de la exactitud se realizó utilizando un método de muestreo estratificado aleatorio, obteniéndose una alta precisión de usuario y productor. Even if global warming is limited to 1.5°C, the region will likely warm at least 0.3°C higher and in some places 0.7°C higher. 2. This thesis examined Bangladesh's flood early warning system and community response capacity in northern Bangladesh. It analyzed the existing flood forecasting technologies including 3-5 day, 10 day, and seasonal forecasts. Through community consultations and surveys, it assessed awareness of forecasts, dissemination methods, and how forecasts inform decisions on livelihoods, shelter, and preparedness. It found forecasts are useful but interpretation and guidance could be improved. It concluded forecast accuracy decreases with lead time and recommended continued system improvements, user training, and strengthening collaboration between forecasting and disaster management agencies.

This document discusses using the SWAT model to predict soil erosion risk in a catchment in northern Morocco. The objective is to develop a decision support system for stakeholders managing land degradation and water resources under climate change. The study area is the 38 km2 Kalaya catchment, which receives an average of 667mm of rain annually. SWAT was calibrated and validated on streamflow and sediment concentration data from 1976-1993. Results show the model successfully simulated hydrology and sediment yield in the catchment. The developed system and model can identify high erosion risk areas and evaluate management practices to address soil degradation and climate change impacts.

Large mass movements related to deglaciation effects in Southern Peru

The Andes region of southern Peru in Cusco has experienced large debris flows from glaciated areas in recent years that have severely impacted communities. The document analyzes recent events in the Santa Teresa region as part of efforts to create an integrated risk management system. A major debris flow in 1998 destroyed the village of Santa Teresa and a hydropower plant, and was caused by heavy rainfall mobilizing glacial sediments. Fieldwork and hazard modeling are being used to create hazard and risk maps for communities threatened by landslides, glacial lake outburst floods, erosion, rockfall and floods to help mitigate risks.
