Human insulin is produced using recombinant DNA technology by altering E. coli bacteria to contain the human insulin gene. There are rapid-acting, short-acting, intermediate-acting, and long-acting insulin preparations. Rapid-acting insulins like insulin lispro reach peak plasma concentrations within 30-90 minutes. Intermediate-acting insulin NPH is a suspension of zinc insulin combined with protamine that delays absorption. Long-acting insulins glargine and detemir have onset times of 3-4 hours and durations of 20-24 hours.
