The second-level digital divide, is referred to as the production gap, and it describes the gap that separates the consumers of content on the Internet from the producers of content.
Lee discussed Pew Internet's latest findings and why they suggest that libraries can play a role in people’s social networks in the future. He described the reasons that people rely more and more on their social networks as they share ideas, learn, solve problems, and seek social support. And he explored how libraries can act as "nodes" in people’s networks. 3/30/09

Lee will discuss the way people use e-book readers and tablet computers and how those devices are fitting into users' digital lives. He will describe how three revolutions in digital technology – in broadband, mobile connectivity, and social media – have created a new social operating system that he calls "networked individualism." He will use the Project's latest findings to help describe how librarians can serve the new educational needs of networked individuals.

'Digital students' are defined as young adult students who have grown up with active participation in technology as an everyday feature of their lives. This is an attempt to identify the relation between the use of a certain technology and the respective digital students characteristics. The introduction of these characteristics had an influence on the requisite the students require from learning and communication.
Prospective U.S. Mathematics Teachers' Engagement in Handheld Cellular Device...Dr. Mokter Hossain
This paper presents quantitative and qualitative data that examine the prospective U.S. mathematics teachers’ engagement in the use of the Internet, hand-held cellular devices, and Web 2.0 activities and their perception of using these technologies for the teaching and learning of Euclidean geometry and other mathematics courses. The study revealed that prospective mathematics teachers in the U.S. have massive engagement in accessing the Internet and Web 2.0-based activities through cellular and handheld mobile devices as well as in their self-reported skills in using Internet, without any significant differences based on their gender. Prospective mathematics teachers experienced numerous advantages and a few minor problems of the blogging activity as a supportive tool in the Euclidean Geometry course. They found blogs a supportive and useful tool for collaborative teaching and learning purposes. Thus, they suggest that blogs and other Web 2.0 tools should be incorporated in the middle and high school mathematics education curricula.

He will discuss how the changed media environment is affecting learners’ expectations about the availability of information and the ways in which learning takes place. In this new environment, the traditional boundaries between home and school, teacher and pupil, public and private are breaking down and that is affecting the way learning occurs. Lee will describe how Pew Internet has looked at these subjects and the ways in which schools and families are responding to them.

Adolescent Information Behavior: The Effect Of Privacy and ConfidentialitySamantha Connell
Teenagers are able to access a rich variety of information sources and have instant, hand-held access to a wealth of information. However, some sources of information sacrifice quality and reliability for anonymity and convenience when it comes to life-concern information seeking. A greater understanding is needed of how teenagers decide what specific sources are comfortable to use and what privacy factors might prevent teenagers from seeking information from reliable resources.

Pew Internet Research: Findings
While increased internet adoption and the rise of mobile connectivity have reduced many gaps in technology access over the
past decade, for some groups digital disparities still remain
One in five American Adults do not use the Internet
Senior citizens, those who prefer to take our interviews in Spanish
rather than English, adults with less than a high school
education, and those living in households earning less than $30,000
per year are the least likely adults to have internet access.
Among adults who do not use the internet, almost half don’t go online
is because they don’t think the internet is relevant to them.
Most have never used the internet before, and don’t have anyone in
their household who does.
The 27% of adults living with disability in the U.S are significantly
less likely than adults without a disability to go online (54% vs. 81%).
Though overall internet adoption rates have leveled off, significant
differences in use remain, generally related to age, household
income, and educational attainment.
