This document compares alternative fuels to gasoline in terms of specific energy, current cost, and MJ of energy provided per dollar spent. It finds that methane (natural gas) provides the most energy per dollar at 73.05 MJ/dollar, while hydrogen provides the highest specific energy at 142 MJ/kg but is also currently the most expensive at $10/kg. Ethanol and biodiesel provide more energy per dollar than gasoline, but less than natural gas.
