This document discusses the use of infinitive verbs and that-clauses in Finnish. It notes that: 1) Infinitive verbs are always followed by "to" + infinitive verb (in Finnish it can also be an että-clause). 2) Only belief, opinion, and knowledge verbs take a that-clause in their active form. In passive form, they take "to" + infinitive. 3) For some verbs, both "to" + infinitive and a that-clause are possible constructions.

• uskomista, arvelua tai tietämistä ilmaisevien
verbien aktiivimuodon jälkeen tulee
nykykielessä that-lause
I believe (that) you know the answer.
She knew (that) we would call her.
• samojen verbien passiivimuodon jälkeen tulee
kuitenkin to-infinitiivi
He is supposed to be in prison.
They were thought to have perished.

4. Infinitiivi ja that-lause
• Joidenkin verbien jälkeen sekä to + infinitiivi
että that-lause ovat mahdollisia
He claimed to have known the answer.
He claimed that he had known the answer.
She decided to drop out of school.
She decided that she would drop out of school.
