2. TO + INFINITIVE
Some reporting verbs use to+INF.
“I’ll go to the supermarket”, he said →
He offered to go to the supermarket

3. TO + INFINITIVE
The verbs that are used in this way are

Be careful when the subject of the subordinate clause is different:
She demanded that they give her a discount.
She demanded to be given a discount
You can change the subject of the subordinate with THAT but not with TO.

9. Only [that + clause]
Some verbs only admit that clauses
--The most important is say:
She said that I had to do exercise
[NOT she said to do exercise]

10. Only [that + clause]
Other verbs that only admit that are insist and suggest.

Advise and order can be used with that or to if there is an object. The second
option is more common.
She advised that we visit Bristol/ She advised us to visit Bristol.
She ordered that they clean their shoes /She ordered them to clean their shoes.

11. Only [to+inf]
These verbs never appear with that
Intend tener la intención

Offer ofrecer

12. +ING
These verbs also appear with –ing
Advise (aconsejar) → The doctor advised dieting
Propose (proponer) → He proposed going to the theatre
Recommend (recomendar) → She recommended reading Dickens
Suggest (sugerir) → They suggested filming in Scotland
