Why Salt Satyagraha Movement -Dandi
march, started ?
Britain’s Salt Acts prohibited Indians from collecting or selling salt, a
staple in the Indian diet. Citizens wereforcedtobuythe vital
mineral from the British, who, in addition to exercising a monopoly
over the manufacture and sale of salt, also exerted a heavy salt tax.
Although India’s poorsuffered most underthe tax, Indians required
salt. Defying the Salt Acts, Mohandas Gandhi reasoned, would be
an ingeniously simple way for many Indians to break a British law
non-violently. Gandhi declaredresistance to British salt policies to
bethe unifying theme for his newcampaign of “satyagraha,” or
mass civil disobedience.
Salt Satyagraha Movement -Dandi
march
TheDandi March, also known as the Salt Satyagraha, began on 12 March1930and was an
important partofthe Indian independence movement and was led by MohandasGandhi. It
was a direct action campaign of salt tax resistance.
On12 March1930, Gandhi and 78satyagrahis,set out onfoot for the coastal village of
Dandi, Gujarat, over390 kilometres from their starting point at Sabarmati Ashram. Gandhi
and the others continued and madea 24-day marchto Dandi toproduce salt without paying
the tax, growing numbers of Indians joined them along the way.
Immediate cause
However, Gandhi was arrestedon themidnight of4–5 May1930. The Dandi March and
the ensuing Dharasana Satyagraha drew worldwide attention to the Indian independence
movement through extensive newspaper and newsreel coverage. The satyagraha against the
salt tax continued for almost a year, ending with Gandhi's release from jail.
When Gandhi broke the salt laws at 6:30 am on 6 April 1930, it
sparked largescale acts of civil disobedience against the British
Raj salt laws by millions of Indians. The campaign had a significant
effect on changing world and British attitudes towards Indian
sovereignty and self-rule and caused large numbers of Indians to join
the fight for the first time.
Salt march: Aftermath
In January 1931, Gandhi was released from prison. He later met
with Lord Irwin (1881-1959), the viceroy ofIndia, and agreedto
call off the satyagraha in exchangefor an equal negotiating role at
a London conference on India’s future. In August of that year,
Gandhi traveled to the conference as the sole representative of
the nationalist Indian National Congress. The meeting was a
disappointment, but British leaders had acknowledged Gandhi as
a force they could not suppress or ignore.

  • 4. Why Salt Satyagraha Movement -Dandi march, started ? Britain’s Salt Acts prohibited Indians from collecting or selling salt, a staple in the Indian diet. Citizens wereforcedtobuythe vital mineral from the British, who, in addition to exercising a monopoly over the manufacture and sale of salt, also exerted a heavy salt tax. Although India’s poorsuffered most underthe tax, Indians required salt. Defying the Salt Acts, Mohandas Gandhi reasoned, would be an ingeniously simple way for many Indians to break a British law non-violently. Gandhi declaredresistance to British salt policies to bethe unifying theme for his newcampaign of “satyagraha,” or mass civil disobedience.
  • 5. Salt Satyagraha Movement -Dandi march TheDandi March, also known as the Salt Satyagraha, began on 12 March1930and was an important partofthe Indian independence movement and was led by MohandasGandhi. It was a direct action campaign of salt tax resistance. On12 March1930, Gandhi and 78satyagrahis,set out onfoot for the coastal village of Dandi, Gujarat, over390 kilometres from their starting point at Sabarmati Ashram. Gandhi and the others continued and madea 24-day marchto Dandi toproduce salt without paying the tax, growing numbers of Indians joined them along the way.
  • 6. Immediate cause However, Gandhi was arrestedon themidnight of4–5 May1930. The Dandi March and the ensuing Dharasana Satyagraha drew worldwide attention to the Indian independence movement through extensive newspaper and newsreel coverage. The satyagraha against the salt tax continued for almost a year, ending with Gandhi's release from jail. When Gandhi broke the salt laws at 6:30 am on 6 April 1930, it sparked largescale acts of civil disobedience against the British Raj salt laws by millions of Indians. The campaign had a significant effect on changing world and British attitudes towards Indian sovereignty and self-rule and caused large numbers of Indians to join the fight for the first time.
  • 7. Salt march: Aftermath In January 1931, Gandhi was released from prison. He later met with Lord Irwin (1881-1959), the viceroy ofIndia, and agreedto call off the satyagraha in exchangefor an equal negotiating role at a London conference on India’s future. In August of that year, Gandhi traveled to the conference as the sole representative of the nationalist Indian National Congress. The meeting was a disappointment, but British leaders had acknowledged Gandhi as a force they could not suppress or ignore.
