Chapter 1: The Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations (Lesson 2 of 3)
In this lesson, we took a look at the League of Nations. We talked about why it was formed and whether the League of Nations was effective. Finally, we considered some key examples of the League's failure, such as Manchuria and Abyssinia.
The Postulates on Russia’s Foreign Policy developed with the participation of the Russian International Affairs Council’s members and experts discuss Russia’s position in the international arena, the role of global challenges in shaping the foreign policy agenda and outline foreign policy priorities for the period from 2012 to 2018. June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. QUOTES
• IR is struggle for power through various means like ideology, religion,
economics, military options, psychological measures, diplomacy etc.
• IR never ends, there is no option, all nations must play the game,
even dropping atomic bombs does not result in end of IR for Japan.
• In IR, you are either a victim or victimizer. Neither of them is not
possible. So Choose wisely !
3. • INDIA-AFGAN RELATIONS
(GS-II - India and its Neighborhood – Relations, Effect
of Policies and Politics of Developed and Developing
Countries on India’s interests, Indian Diaspora)
4. PYQs
• The proposed withdrawal of International Security Assistance Force
(ISAF) from Afghanistan in 2014 is fraught with major security
implications for the countries of the region. Examine in light of the
fact that India is faced with a plethora of challenges and needs to
safeguard its own strategic interests. (2013)
5. GEOGRAPHY
• Geography is the strategic
curse for afghanistan, but it
is strategic blessing for
Pakistan, on the other hand
Geography is the strategic
distraction for India.
6. Brief History of
Afghanistan
• "Great game" was played between
great empires in Afghan. In ancient
times it was on silk route and had
important passes like Kyber pass.
• "Graveyard of empires" - Terrian and
people of Afghan are always difficult
to control by outside powers.
• In 1960s and 70s, it was culturally
rich, modern and urbanised place.
10. ART OF PROXY WAR – The lesson that Pak
learnt
Pandora box opened by USA
11. IMPACT ON INDIA - Foreign militants in
Kashmir after 1989
• After the withdrawal of USSR combat forces
from Afghanistan in 1989, Pakistan
maneuvered the battle-hardened militants to
the Kashmir valley to create a new theatre of
conflict and terrorism.
• Ethnic cleansing Kashmiri Hindus estimated at
3.5 lakhs.
• Nearly 3000 foreign militants were killed in
anti insugency operations.
12. RISE OF TALIBAN
• The Taliban, or "students" in the Pashto language,
emerged in the early 1990s in northern Pakistan.
• The promise made by the Taliban - in Pashtun areas
straddling Pakistan and Afghanistan - was to restore
peace and security and enforce their own austere
version of Sharia, or Islamic law, once in power.
• Afghans, weary of the mujahideen's excesses and
infighting after the Soviets were driven out, generally
welcomed the Taliban when they first appeared on the
scene.
• Thus devil replaced satan
• Afganistan became safe haven for Islamist terrorism.

Administration
16. Afghan(2004-
2020)
• More than 100 Lakh crore rupees spent
• 1.5 lakh Afghan troops and civilians dead
• 4000+ US & allied troops died.
• Corruption, infighting, flawed policies made
the costly effort ineffective.
• US did not understand the needs properly. They did
not have clear objectives, ways to achieve it but
just focussed on pumping in cash.
• Imposed Democracy was flawed and rigged many
times to favour US.
17. PEACE PROCESS THAT RESULTED IN
RESURGENCE OF TALIBAN
• With just 75000 militants(coalision of several organisations) taliban could succeed because of US
desperatism to exit Afghan. US released a plan of phased exit irrespective of the commitment that taliban
gave. Taliban just waited and captured power without much fighting.
• The Haqqani Network – the Haqqani network is the most ruthless, disciplined and organized subgroup
within the Taliban. The Haqqani network is also a major impediment to the prospects of negotiations with
Kabul. The network’s leader favors a solely military solution to the conflict. The main base of its operation is
in Pakistan.

infrastructure, human capital building and mining
sectors. Besides, it has also identified the
telecommunications, health, pharmaceuticals, and
information technology and education sectors for
