• Definition
Foreign Policy is the mechanism national government use to guide
their diplomatic interaction and relationship with other countries. A Policy of
the state reflects its values and goals and helps drive its political and economic
aims in the global arena.
• Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah said that our foreign policy have to be
goodwill and friendly relation towards all nation & neighbors. We do not cherish
aggressive designs against any country or nation.
5. Purpose of foreign policy
• The foreign policy of Pakistan is primarily directed to the pursuit of
national goals of seeking peace and stability through international
cooperation. Special emphasis is laid on economic diplomacy to take
advantages offered by the process of globalization as also to face challenges
of the 21st century.

1969 to 9161 was the time when Pakistan had decide to stay away form both
the blocs of the cold war.
Pakistan kept on pursuing the policy of bilateralism during the non
alignment period.
After 1979 the foreign policy makers have sniffed that now it is the time to
change the policy according to the International environment.

• This was the time when the cold war was at its peak.
• Both the United State and USSR were in an indirect confrontation against
each other.
• In 80s the situation of cold war became more important for whole world
including Pakistan.
14. Why Pakistan shifted Its foreign Policy?
• In December 1979 Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.
• United States found that Pakistan is inevitable for it to contain the contain
the communism being spread by Soviet Union.
• Thus Us approached Pakistan and resultantly Pakistan revived its foreign
policy.

• Both Pakistan and Us worked in collaboration against the USSR till the day
the Soviet's forces withdrew form Afghanistan.
• During this period Pakistan has been receiving aid form US because it was
serving the US interests in Afghanistan.
• In 1981 then President United States Ronald Reagon provided five year
economic and military aid of 3.2 billions $.

• There was a time when a little bit tension witness between both countries
even during this era.
• Pakistan had already started its nuclear program at that time.
• US asked Pakistan to withdraw its nuclear program, but Pakistan denied.

• This era in the foreign policy of Pakistan ended with the end of cold war.
• Cold war ended with the disintegration of USSR in 15 states in 1991.
• US emerged as the only Superpower of the world.

attacks in American history. The moment shocked the nation. Two planes,
hijacked by Islamic jihadists vowing death to all Americans, plowed into both
