The Internet boosted collaboration and innovation, making possible Open Source, Free Software, and the digital ecosystem we enjoy today, from connected cars to mobile apps. Open edX may be the latest and most exciting Free/Libre Open Source Software project in education today. Open edX is currently used from MOOCs to massive national e-learning deployments, or in addition to the local LMS.
True to MIT's culture, the Open edX team has adopted an open and collaborative approach, releasing the code under a GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL) for the core platform, and an Apache license for some libraries such as XBlock (for extensions). The community is invited to use, improve, and share code and practices, to accelerate innovation. The goal is to educate 1 billion students!

Abstract:
Creative Commons are a librarian's best friend when it comes to explaining copyright, pointing others to free academic and educational resources, and highlighting reuse and attribution best practices. Learn about Creative Commons -- the organization and its mission; its copyright licenses; its public domain tools, especially CC0 (read CC Zero); how to discover, find and attribute CC-licensed content; and how to license your own content with a CC license. We will also go over a few of the major organizations and institutions who have adopted CC licensing.
It is not new to say that the scholarly communication system is sick. One way to put it is that the publishers have built a paywall around the papers written by our faculty and make us librarians pay for it.
For years, Open Access via the green and gold route have been touted as a joint solution. To this end, as academic librarians, we focused on building institutional repositories and getting open access mandates. However, recently, many prominent members of the open access community have begun to express doubts about the viability of institutional repositories as a solution given the lack of success.
Some, like Stevan Harnad self-dubbed “Open Access Archivangelist” for Green Open access, claim to have given up, while others, like Eric Van de Velde, suggest that we rethink other ways to accomplish Green Open access beyond just institutional repositories. In this webinar, we will summarise all the arguments and attempt to give a librarian’s point of view about the future of IRs.

In 2018, CC kicked off an exciting initiative called CC usability. I will present findings from six months of user research, including the high-level goals and human-centered design process we undertook, and how we arrived at 9 key insights. I will also present some of the prototypes we developed, and how the research transformed our approach to the CC Search product. Lastly, I’ll preview what’s ahead in 2019 and gather feedback on ways to more effectively engage the global community in this work.

CC Search is out of beta and provides access to 300 million images across 19 content providers, with more in the pipeline. The CC Search team will present the current state of CC Search, including a new vision and strategy for 2019, front end features, and how everything works under the hood, both technically and legally, including a new CC Catalog API that provides access to the catalog.
In the second half of the session, we will host a Q&A and discussion on the ways we might internationalize CC Search, either via code, a push API, translations, or integration of image collections from different regions. We’ll also discuss new applications that could be built on top of the catalog itself that go beyond Search.
Finally, we’ll also preview what’s coming next in the roadmap, and how anyone may get involved via the CC developer community and/or usability testing.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts.
