Crafting an essay on the subject of "Walden Essays" presents a unique set of challenges that
require a deep understanding of transcendentalist philosophy and an appreciation for the
complexities embedded in the works of Henry David Thoreau. The task involves delving into the
intricacies of Thoreau's seminal work, "Walden," which explores themes of simplicity, self-
reliance, and a connection with nature. Analyzing and interpreting Thoreau's eloquent prose
demands a keen intellect and an ability to grasp the nuances of his philosophical musings.
Furthermore, writing a compelling essay on "Walden Essays" necessitates extensive research to
contextualize Thoreau's ideas within the historical and literary milieu of the 19th century. It
involves understanding the societal, environmental, and cultural factors that influenced Thoreau's
thoughts, as well as examining the impact of "Walden" on subsequent literature and
philosophical discourse.
Additionally, the essay must demonstrate a mastery of critical thinking skills to analyze and
evaluate Thoreau's arguments, exploring the underlying messages and implications of his writing.
Crafting a coherent and persuasive argument while addressing potential counterarguments adds
another layer of complexity to the writing process.
The challenge lies not only in summarizing Thoreau's ideas but also in presenting an original
perspective that contributes to the ongoing discourse surrounding "Walden." This requires a
thoughtful synthesis of primary and secondary sources, as well as a nuanced understanding of
literary criticism.
In conclusion, writing an essay on "Walden Essays" demands a combination of intellectual rigor,
research skills, and a profound appreciation for Thoreau's philosophical insights. It is a task that
requires dedication, critical thinking, and a commitment to delving deep into the layers of
meaning within "Walden." However, for those seeking assistance or inspiration, it's worth noting

2. Similarities Between The Wars Of European Religion
The Wars of Religion were a series of conflicts in Europe due to the spread of
Protestantism. These conflicts were due in particular, to the intense resentment of
Protestantism as a religion and a fear of providing freedom of religion. These
conflicts were very violent and were cause for a lot of change religiously in Europe.
Although the Wars were very different throughout the various countries in Europe,
there were also many similarities and I will explore these in this essay. The primary
similarity between the Wars of Religionin Europe was the presence of a final
compromise to end the conflict. However the main theme was that one group was
always excluded from the compromise. For example, Lynn Hunt stated, ... he[Henry

4. The Failure Of Russia
History has proven the inferiority of the economic systems that are not free market
oriented. People starved all over Europe due to lack of food produced before the
Industrial Revolution and the application of capitalism. Governments practicing
socialism and communism like China, Russia, and North Korea ended up starving
their citizens because their economies were so awful. Look at Russiaas an example.
Russia is rich in natural resources and is the largest country in the world, yet many
Russians have starved in the last century. Andrew Bernstein has some information
about the failure of Russia s economy. Bernstein has taught philosophy at universities
all over New York and has a Ph.D. in philosophy. He lectures regularly and has

While the total amount of economic aid sent to the Soviet Union is unknown, ... it is
known that America alone donated 700,000 tons of foodstuff (Bernstein). Even with
all of the aid, the U.S.S.R. could not keep itself together or support its failing system.
Poverty could have been avoided, but Russia would not implement capitalism.
Another example of economic potential wasted by socialism is Venezuela.
Venezuela has the largest oil reserves on Earth, yet their economy is failing because
of their socialist policies. Many Venezuelans can not even afford food. Venezuelan
money has become worthless due to skyrocketing inflation rates. At one point, it was
actually worth less than virtual coins in the game World of Warcraft, and these coins
spawn infinitely. If a currency is created infinitely, that means it is barely worth
anything. Hyperinflation like that is never good for an economy, let alone hundreds
or thousands of percent inflation. A good inflation rate for economic growth is about
one to three percent. At least countries that existed before the implementation of
capitalism could not have avoided starvation like Venezuela and Russia could.
Europe has utilized capitalism and opened up markets some, and has improved
reasonably. Europe had a lot of
5. The Demand Theory And Theories Of Corruption
Theories of corruption generally fall under two classifications i.e. demand theories
and supply theories. Demand theory models of corruption include two approaches:
resource allocation models and the principal agent relationship models (Jain,
1998). Resource allocation models evaluate the costs of the allocation of resources
to bribe seeking activities. The model is based on the principle that bribe seeking
is one aspect of any economic activity and thus part of a firm s resources are
devoted to this pursuit (Krueger, 1974). In a competitive system, bribe seeking
chances are produced either by agents over government policy or by underlying
societal features (Mauro, 1995).
Principal agent models of corruption postulate that the misuse of power by
individuals/organisations, which is driven by self interest (Shleifer Vishniv, 1993).
The fundamental dilemma comes from that agents are entrusted with authority on
behalf on the principal (citizens). In a democratic state, the elected officials and
managers of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Corruption is discussed in fields as diverse as economics, political science,
anthropology, sociology, history, organization studies, international business,
business ethics, psychology, and philosophy. According to Caiden (2001, 19),
anthropologists found that public officials were distinguished from the rest of the
population for their unique role in providing services and goods to the rest of the
population. These public officials are expected to possess professional integrity, and
consequently uphold the public interest. Therefore, the public officials also
contribute to good governance. Corruption is barely a problem that is exclusive to
developing countries (Klitgaard, 1998:3). Additionally, according to various
researches, (Transparency International, 2011 and Kligaard 1998) corruption is
mostly rampart in Africa.
6. Time As A Dominant Mode
Time emerges as a dominant mode in man s experience of modernity. Modernity has
shattered the sense of continuity and fixedness on which man s identity was built.
Many modern dramatists, who attempt to articulate man s Being in the world and his
experience in the modern world, explore different representations of the concept of
time, because time is capable of endowing human experience with a feeling of
continuity and discontinuity. Since modernity has ripped man out of a sense of time
consistent with his organic relationship to the world, experimenting with time could
be used to concretize the drama of modernity. For instance, many modern British and
Egyptian playwrights share a sense of dislocation and an identity crisis, which
manifests itself in the particular temporal patterns of their dramas. New temporal
modes, subjective and objective, have been developed in modern dramatic
representations, and many of them testify to the influence of philosophies of time,
both ancient and contemporary. In modern society, Time is generally perceived to
exist in our consciousness. When dealing with time, we are usually referring to our
consciousness of time; and we are conscious of time in many ways: appointments,
clocks, days, etc... This is known as objective time, but time can also be conceived as
a subjective experience, otherwise known as psychological or absolute time. An
important subcategory of time consciousness is time perception. Many philosophies
have thought

8. Out Of The Silent Planet Hero s Journey
In the postmodern period of films, film makers are constantly pushing the boundaries
of genre definitions, as well as putting different genres into various new
combinations. One such combination is the fantasy adventure genre; This genre can
be defined as narratives in which an otherworldly figure or situation interrupts the
human real world or a human is a part of an otherworldly lifestyle. Within these
parameters, the protagonist must overcome obstacles in a world full of physical and
moral peril and accomplish a critical mission in order to save the society from
whence they came. In short, the fantasyadventure genrecomes from the use of

Star Wars, the various non human creatures seen during the first trilogy visually
embody the theme of good vs. evil. All of the evil characters looked evil in

good characters were either human or appealing to humans, like Wookies and Ewoks.
Even Yoda had a lovable look to him. On the other hand, while the creatures on

9. The Premature Burial
In The Premature Burial , Edgar Allen Poe illustrates a narrator who explores his
fear of being buried alive. Throughout the short story Poe makes the theme clear by
illustrating that fears can be overcome as long as you focus on the darkest parts in
life. Poe demonstrates the theme through conflicts with the narrator and his fear.
During the short story, the narrator is absorbed by his fear. The narrator has a
medical disorder called catalepsy. This physical condition can make a person not
move or speak for several hour or even months. This condition haunts him everyday.
He is afraid of being with people because if the catalepsy gets to him while with
people they can confuse him with being dead and then bury him alive. For him no

The theme is The Premature Burial is that fears can be overcome as long as you
focus on the darkest areas of life. In January I faced one of my biggest fear. I was
put in a situation to leave my home country and pursue soccer. I feared that nothing
would go right and the kids would be much better than me. Constant thoughts of
leaving friends and family for nothing ran through my head. On the plane ride to
Portugal which was my destination for soccer I could not sleep. Like the narrator
is The Premature Burial this fear put me in complete distress . The first couple
days all i thought about was failing and having to go home and explain to everyone
that I was not good enough or strong enough to stay away. I later on faced my fear
by going to the first practice. Once I started playing every thought of fear escaped
my mind. I realized that my imagination is what kept me limited to succeed. After
the practice I got good news from the coaches and offered a spot on the team. Like
the narrator, my fear was overcome by experiences. With my fear overcome, living
in Portugal is not so bad. Without the reminder of my fear, I am enjoying my stay
and starting to feel grateful for this opportunity. In my life experience and poe s
short story, fear is present but can be tamed to a better and happier

11. Compare 1964 To The Civil Rights Act Of 1964
America is treasured because of its ability to offer equal opportunity to all people,
no matter what race, gender, or religion. However, America s prized equality has
not been available all through the country s lifespan. Many acts and laws have had
to be put in place in order to create an egalitarian country. The Civil Rights Act of
1866 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 both were both created on the same topic:
creating a fairer country that provided equal opportunities to all. Essentially, they
work hand in hand, the Civil Rights Act of 1866 provided equal opportunity and
rights to those with parents born in other countries, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964
prohibited any sort of prejudice or discrimination concerning sex, religion, and race....

States, no matter what ethnicity, except American Indians. The House had wanted all
people born here to be given an equal and fair opportunity of legal benefits. This bill
was quite important concerning other races in the American workforce because it
was the first major anti discrimination employment ordinance. The bill originated
from Senate Judiciary Chairman Lyman Trumbull of Illinois. The Civil Rights Act of
1866 essentially encourages nondiscrimination and protect all ethic groups. Despite
not giving this benefit to Native Americans, this bill represents America taking a step
closer to being a free and equal country that offers the same opportunities to
12. Minimum Wage And Magical Thinking Opinion
Minimum Wage and Magical Thinking Opinion In the reading of Minimum wage
and magical thinking he discusses that raising the minimum wage would have a
negative impact and would actually hurt those that it is supposed to help and I would
agree. Raising the minimum wage would cause inflation to rise, thus basically
canceling out what it was intended to do and making the US dollar worth less.
Secondly, minimum wageincrease would cause the price of goods to rise and then
less people will be buying so, then you are paying employees more and making less
revenue. Lastly, this would hurt the very people that raising the minimum wage is
intended to help because the number of jobs that are entry level or low skilled will
drop and then people who were making a 7.25 minimum wage will now be earning
a 0 dollar wage. Minimum wage does not need to increase, especially not as drastic
as some people are calling for and the positive outcome that is thought it would
produce actually would be doing more harm than good. If the minimum wage were to
rise inflationin turn would rise too as Issac Newton s third law says for every action
there is an equal and opposite reaction. The general idea is to pay people more money
, but not to increase the cost of goods which in a perfect world that may work, but
this is the real world and that isn t how it works. If for example, McDonalds starts
paying their minimum wage employees 10.10 nationwide in turn what used to be a
one dollar cheeseburger

First, arrive early because being ready when that first number gets drawn can

professional athletes show up to their competitions early so that they can prepare.
Bingo might not be a professional sport, but when you show up early, you can buy

many books, you have higher chances of feeling overwhelmed with information
and missing numbers when called. That wastes money and keeps you from making
progress. While this strategy says that you should buy as many books as possible,
you have to know your limit. How much does this raise your statistical odds of
winning? When you have 20 other players and everyone uses one book, you have a
five percent chance of winning. In contrast, when everyone uses one book and you
play bingo with four books, you raised your odds of winning by 17 percent. To
determine the odds of a bingo game, divide the number of books by the number of
people who are playing. In most cases, you will have to do a rough estimate, but it
does give you a better idea about your chances of

15. Symbolism In Benito Cereno
Benito Cereno , a novel written by Herman Melville, has been the topic of many
debates since its publication. This novel is filled with so much symbolism that it
makes it very difficult to get a clear and succinct analysis of the novel. As one reads
this novel different themes and symbols become apparent. One such theme is good
vs. evil. Melville utilizes color symbolism to signify that black was completely evil
and white was pure good. The issue of good vs. evil is present throughout Benito
Cereno , and can be seen through the actions of Captain Delano and the Blacks on
board San Dominick. It is also seen through the writing of Herman Melville himself.

Although he knew nothing about the San Dominick he still decided to climb
onboard the ship to see why they were sailing in such a poor manner. After he went

the whale boat could carry, with whatever soft bread the steward might have, all the
remaining pumpkins on board, with a box of sugar, and a dozen of his private
bottles of cider. This benevolent act reveals to the reader the pure goodness of
Captain Delano. Captain Delano is also characterized as an undistrustful man.
Absurd, then, to suppose that those questions had been prompted by evil designs.
Thus, the same conduct, which, in this instance, had raised the alarm, served to

his undistrustful personality caused him to dismiss such thought. He believes that all

117). According to an experienced border patrol agent named T.J. Bonner,
Intrusions by the Mexican military to protect drug loads happen all the time (as
cited in Buchanan, 2006, p.117). It is easy to see how U.S. Border Patrol agents
and Mr. Buchanan can support the United States efforts in securing the U.S.
Mexico border. Not all of Mr. Buchanan s views are based on histories of violence
from Mexican illegal aliens. As recent as the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks,
U.S. citizens have realized we are vulnerable to attacks within the United States.
This realization is a valid concern because terrorists could also gain access through
this border. The U.S. Border Patrol has a term called other than Mexican (OTM).
Buchanan (2006) stated, A growing number of OTMs caught at the border now
come from the Middle East (p. 15). It is important to remember that these Middle
Easterners are caught at other points of entry, and not just the U.S. Mexico border.
This does show a significant paranoia that many Americans have. This paranoia can
lead to Americans supporting increased border protection. Governor s Richardson,
Napolitano, and Mr. Buchanan all share a similar point of view regarding more
security on our border. Not all Americans share this opinion. Jason Reilly is an editor
at the Washington Post. He supports immigration when it is done legally. Reilly

French King Louis XIV became king at the age of four. However, it was not until
after the death of Cardinal Mazarin, that Louis was officially recognized as the King
of France in 1643 until 1715. He referred to himself as the Sun King and is well
known for the building of Versailles and being the best illustration of an absolute
monarchy in the seventeenth century. However, historians think that it might have
not been an absolute democracy since France had other influencers with authority.
Instead, Louis achieved an indirect absolute monarchy by controlling the policy
making regulations and the people in his court. France was the dominant power in
Europe at the time, and Louis he wanted to showcase it through his military forces
and the Palace of Versailles. He also wanted to unite the Catholics which lead to

The Sun King did not want Protestants to practice their religion in a largely Catholic

Fontainebleau and revoked the Edict of Nantes. The Edict of Nantes was issued by
Henry IV and gave some religious freedom to French Protestants, who were also
known as Huguenots. The new edict called for the wreckage of Huguenot churches
and the closure of Protestant schools. About 200,000 Huguenots left France to seek
shelter in other countries. The support for no Protestantism came from the people of
France. They rejected the rights of Protestants, banned them from government
meetings, and destroyed Protestant churches. Which eventually lead Catholicism to
regain control in densely Protestant areas. All in all, King Louis XIV was not
supportive of Protestant reform in France because he wanted to keep it a Catholic

There have been many studies documented in the literature regarding the reduction of
CLABSIs. The majority of the studies have reported statistically significant decreases
in CLABSI rates post implementation of a quality improvement initiative

Puerto Rico, participated in the program (AHRQ, 2012). The program structure
included three main components: (1) a model to translate evidence into practice at

the program revealed success in reducing CLABSIs nationwide by 41% from a

Demons. Simply the name of these soulless creatures brings an unsettling feeling
that makes most people cringe in fear. For Clarissa Fray, otherwise known as
Clary, it is the very name of these creatures that brings her a sense of thrill. Clarissa
Fray is the protagonist as well as one of the few people of this world to know about
demons. She has been tasked with a heavy burden a shadowhunter. What is a
shadowhunter? The Shadowhunters are Nephilim humans with angel blood. The
world that Clary knows of is not in fact a great place to live; however it is the
opposite a dystopia, a world where demons freely roam the earth. Her goal? To

23. Why Teenagers Should Be Allowed To Vote
Teens are not the same as they used to be. Those who are not at least 16 years of
age should have the choice to vote. Teenager s minds have developed a lot. Voting
is a privilege, but you don t have to vote, because it isn t mandatory. Some
teenagers are now mature, and know what they want at the age of 16. If they voted,
knowing who they wanted to pick, then it s just an extra vote. Depending on who
you vote for, this can be an advantage. Some teenagers don t know what they want. It
it very true that there are a lot of teens that do not know what they want, which can
be confusing at times. If they chose randomly, then it can either mess up your vote or
make it larger. Again, depending on who you are votingfor, this can be an advantage.
24. The Consequences Of Waste In Henry Thoreau s Food
Waste
Every year the planet loses 30 percent of its food, which is an astonishing 1.4
billion tons. This issue is faced by every developing and developed countries in the
world. Food waste continues to grow at a rapid pace as population increases. The
numerous causes of food waste occur at the stages of production, processing and
retailing. Foodwasteis a highly critical issue that affects the world and many should
understand the consequences this issue has on the environment. In Henry
Thoreau s Where I Lived and What I lived For essay, depicts that living small is the
key to happiness. He became close to nature and valued it. He emphasizes that one
can change their lives and awaken to the earnest possibilities of everyday life if
they become nature. One of the main ideas in the essay is that having an excessive
amount of things does not make one happy. This can be applied to food, many
purchase more than they can consume. Thoreau wants readers to value nature and
understand how our actions will affect us in the future. This links to food waste
because more land is needed to produce food; which consequents in forests that are
killed, to produce larger amounts of food that will be wasted. One of the country s
that produces the most food and wastes the most food is the United States. A major
reason is because food is cheaper in the United States than anywhere else in the
world. Fruits and vegetables have the highest wastage rates of any food. The

The Great Gatsby. Some may interpret this quote as telling readers that things that
Gatsby obsessed over, such as love, wealth, and power are the most dangerous things
in the Great Gatsby. Gatsby was so obsessed with money to attain Daisy that he kept
on alluding to it throughout his talks with Nick and flaunting it to Daisy, explaining
that it took me just three years to earn the money that bought his impressive house. In

When he meets Daisy, he falls in love with her. But not only does he see her as a
person, but also as an expensive object whose voice is the sound of money .
Because of this, he needs to gain even more money to win Daisy over. In fact, after
the war, he resorts to bootlegging, the filth behind his illusion to others that he is a
noble and wealthy man, to gain this wealth. To complement this newfound money,
he creates an entirely new persona that completely estranges him from his past,
just to attain Daisy. Gone is Jay Gatz, the son of poor farmers, but now Gatz now
creates Gatsby, a Platonic conception of himself . He has covered his past with
mystery, parties, mansions, formality, and composure, picking his words with
great care . He projects that he is a person with limitless resources and who can
control everything with his charm and power. He even lures Daisy for a while,
who believes that Gatsby is part of the class that she and Tom lie in. This illusion
is only for others though; Gatsby does not even attend his parties usually. When
Gatsby opens up to Nick, he shows that his true self cherishes the past, the time
before the war when Daisy loved him, even though he was not wealthy. The most
dangerous illusion that he creates is the one he creates for himself. He still thinks
that he can fix everything just the way it was before and reclaim Daisy
permanently, who has always loved only him, even though he is at a severe
disadvantage to Tom, a wealthy, secure, and forceful individual to whom she has
been married to for years. But even with many hints throughout the novel that
abilities are not endless such as Nick s claim that recreating the past is impossible,
Gatsby stays entranced in the illusion of the power of his fake persona being able to

26. How Beer Has Changed Our Side, Time
Beer has been around longer than a few countries today. It has a lot more history to
it than one might believe, for example, Raley states that Historians speculate that
prehistoric nomads may have made beer from grain water before learning to make
bread. (Raley 1998) Despite that speculation no person can deny the time and effort
has been put to perfecting a fine brew. Brewingbeercan be very rewarding however it
does requires time, the right ingredients, and most importantly the complex steps
to create the perfect beer. Unfortunately for brew masters one of the most important
pieces to crafting the perfect beverage is not on our side, time. As John Palmer
explains in his instructional book How to Brew The primary phase for ales is
often 2 5 days, but 1 3 weeks is normal for a lager. (Palmer, 2006) what he is
referring to is the time from the boiling process to turn your ingredients (which we
will talk about shortly) to the long fermentation stages, and finally racking and
bottling. There are unofficial sources claiming to have some ales done in less than
a week while some lagers were said to take over a year. The most crucial and
potentially most dangerous stages all involve the uncertainty of time. A task such as
bottling your brew too early can cause an eruption of the bottle which could be
dangerous for all involved. While not all incidents involving time are physically
dangerous it is extremely off putting to think rushing that beer during the racking
phase

Iconography is, arguably, one of the most influential pieces of art in the world.
Icons are known for the many images and depictions of holy scenes that appear
across several cultures. Though icons are diverse, there are always uniting
characteristics. Each icon is painted in a way that allows the viewer to understand

That is what makes St. George and the Dragon so interesting. This has to do with
the spread of the icons. Icons were art that could be, fairly easily, reproduced. Due
to their significance, like St. George s triumph over evil, they were wide spread
and hung up in homes and churches. This led to more and more people becoming
aware of the story. St. George represented an idea Christian knight. He was the
embodiment of what men on the crusades should have been like. When the stories
about him started circulating people were in awe of how he was represented. As
said before he appeared during the siege of Jerusalem, without the icon depiction of
St. George, it is very plausible that the men would not have known who it was that

It is very hard for zoos to replicate the natural environment that the animal is used to
living in. Capturing animals is cruel no matter the reason. Animals have their own
rights, and animals have their own lives while they re out in the wild. Capturing
these animals destroys their way of life. For example elephants travel long
distances in the wild in large groups that is their way of life. When elephants are in
a zoo, they can t travel long distances, in fact, the amount they can move can barely
be named as worthy of travel. (List of Pros and Cons of Zoos). Experts, scientists,

Introduction One of the biggest rites of passages in the United States at the age of
16 is obtaining a driver s license. The freedom to roam the open road and explore the
world around you in most cases is a joyous occasion. At 16, a young inexperienced
driver is constantly conveyed that driving is a privilege and one must use caution
or that privilege will be taken away. However, over the past few years one of the
growing problems in United States not only affects young drivers but drivers of
all ages. Distracted driving is a growing problem in the United States that affects not
only people of all ages but race, and gender as well. In 2011, 3,331 people were killed

Literature Review The Crashworthiness Data System is a random sample of
collected data by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of reported
crashes (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). The collection of data
identifies how an accident took place, the age of the person involved, variables of
attentiveness, ethnicity, and gender. The data summarizes distracted driving into
three main types visual, manual, and cognitive (Distracted Driving, 2013). Visual
distraction is when a driver takes his or her eyes off the road (Distracted Driving,
2013). Manual distraction is defined as taking your hands off the wheel, while
cognitive is taking your mind off the road (Distracted Driving, 2013). As
previously, stated, distracted driving is becoming an increased problem in the
United States year after year. Risk factors One of the reasons why distracted
driving is so important is the ability to identify risk factors that are associated with
it. According to the CDC high school students who participate in distractions like
texting while driving will be twice as likely to get in the car with a drunk driver and
five times more likely themselves to drive drunk (Distracted Driving, 2013). The
belief is that if the student participates in one unsafe practice that it opens the door to
other unsafe habits (Distracted Driving, 2013) Many authors have investigated the risk

Another cultural significance which was represented in the book were the gender
relations. This is also evident in the beginning of the book when Tambu claims to be
a better student than her brother ever was, but that he was chosen to get the better
English schooling simply because he was a man and she was a girl. This is
representative of the country and obviously most of the world at this time since
women movements in Africa were not prominent at the time. The Africans had to
worry about their general independence first instead of the rights of women, which is
the main reason why there weren t as many women movements towards rights until
after independence. This makes sense since it would be unethical to have African
men and women treated equally while still under the negative influence of the
English. This explains why women movements in Zimbabwe were formed in the
years after independence and still are in effect to this day.

However, I question such reasoning. Is FGM a human rights violation? I believe it
can be, especially in cases in which the practice is done on children and/or forced.
And while this may be true in many cases and the masking of this under the guise
of maintaining tradition must be addressed by the world community, female
circumcision is not always forced and is possible to be performed on a consenting
adult for various cultural reasons. This may be a difficult argument to follow in
countries such as Djibouti and Egypt, in which the prevalence of FGM reaches
close to ninety eight percent of the female population. However, there are many
countries in sub Saharan Africa such as Kenya and Liberia that are closer to fifty
percent and many countries with an even smaller percentage of the female
population being circumcised , so there is some level of choice in these countries. No
matter how unnecessary and barbaric some may see the practice, FGM must be
acknowledged as a cultural practice in cases in which it is not forced but rather
sought after by a consenting adult, utilizing cultural relativism in recognizing that
female circumcision may be an acceptable practice to some people and their culture
should not be persecuted unnecessarily by members of the contemporary human
rights movement who cannot relate to it for no reason other than that. So the
question is asked again, is female genital mutilation a violation of human rights? Only
in some cases. For this reason, to

Under the Project Safe Childhood structure, state, local and federal partners are
seeking the toughest sentences possible. The Government has made half a million
dollars available for the Project Safe Childhood program. This program intends to
bring state and local law enforcement together with federal prosecutors from their
regions.
Cooperative law enforcement work on the registry has already led to some great
stories of success. The first case brought under the Adam Walsh Child Protection and
Safety Act involved a fugitive who was arrested by the Social Security
Administration for allegedly using a false name and another man s Social Security
number as he tried to set up a new identity for himself. It turns out that this individual

The defense alliances were agreements put in place to promise that in the event of
war the allied nation would receive support. These alliances could entail economic,
financial, logistical, and or military support. Due to the alliances in Europe splitting
into two different parts if any side got into a war it would mean that all of the

40. Hispanic Cultural Identity
Relevant identities:
My identity as a Hispanic
My identity as a border town Hispanic
My identity as a city Hispanic
My identity as a Latina (different connotation than Hispanic)
My identity as a white washed Latina (from a traditional Latina/o perspective)
Note 1: This identity is common amongst Latina/os who have immigrant parents and
pursue higher education (or in general have interests that typically Americans or
white people have)
Note 2: This identity is particularly important because I care about environmental

to better understand why environmentalism and being authentically Latina/o are
considered mutually exclusive.
What do I care about?:
Understanding cultural differences in environmentalism
Understanding insufficient environmental stewardship (in general)

Why do I care about this? Is this morally and culturally ethical? Ignorance is bliss,
no? Of course, considering the environmental, social inequalities, and health aspects,
my interests seem to be clearly justified ... no? Philosophical inquiry will allow me
to ask these questions and meticulously ponder their meaning. Specifically, however,
LFP will allow me to incorporate and further understand my own lived experience
regarding environmentalism and being Latina. In other words, LPF gives me an
academic voice to articulate and expand on my experience. For example, [an

41. Examples Of Satire In The Pardoners Tale
Following the Pardoner s short story about the rioters, he divulged into a peroration
of his medieval sermon. The Pardoner s eloquent haranguing appears as he
exclaims, My holy pardon frees you all of this, provided that you make the right
approaches, that is with sterling rings, or silver brooches (Chaucer 301 303). Even
though the statement appears to free of irony, the Pardoner s opening story brings a
sense of satire to his closing remarks. Throughout the tale of the rioters, the Pardoner
hoped to exhibit how greed is a negative characteristic, yet he is exceptionally money
hungry himself. The utilization of irony thus showcases the Pardoner s characteristics
of being self seeking and egotistic. Chaucer accurate depicts the characterization
