The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

3. Remember
The IELTS Reading test is not only a
test of your English but it’s also a
test of different reading skills.
These skills are skimming, scanning
and intensive reading.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
4. In this presentation, we will
give you an insight into these
reading skills and some
useful tips to master them.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
6. Skimming
has
several
meanings
in English.
(1) To remove a substance from top of a liquid.
(2) To move quickly just above a surface without
going in it.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
7. Skimming in reading.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
Skimming in reading means reading rapidly in order to get a
general overview of the material.
It is also referred as gist reading.
One of the examples of skimming in reading is how you browse a
book or magazine to see if there are things of your interest and you
like to read it further.
8. Skimming in reading.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
As we begin skimming a text, we focus on the content words – the
nouns, verbs and adjectives – rather the grammatical words (it, the,
on, etc.,) that provide structure rather than meaning. For example:
The cafe is open until late on Fridays.
Reading for gist is all about getting the ideas of the text by
skimming it rapidly and ignoring the grammatical words.
10. Don’t just focus on the straight line
(horizontally) but move your eyes
vertically as much as you move your eyes
horizontally.
Skimming is a bit like running downstairs.
Move your eyes on the page as if you are
stepping downstairs.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
11. Pay attention to headings,
boldface and italic words,
names of people and
places, dates, nouns, and
unfamiliar words.
Titles play an important
role in representing the
subject. Pay special
attention to titles and
subheadings.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
12. To skim, prepare yourself to move rapidly through the
pages. You do not to read every word. When skimming,
you don’t even have to read complete sentences. If the
start of a sentence does not give you the information
you want, skip to the next sentence.
The introductory sentence of each paragraph usually
describes what follows in the paragraph. When you
skim, read the first or second sentence in each
paragraph carefully. This should give you enough idea of
the rest of the matter.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
14. Scanning in reading means reading for more specific
information, such as numbers, names or other easily
identifiable data within a text. We do this when, for example,
we consult a bus timetable for a specific time or destination.
In Scanning you sweep your eyes over part of a text to find
specific pieces of information.
Scanning is commonly used in everyday life, for example, when you
lookup a word in a dictionary or try to find a friend's name in your
phone directory you actually scan to find the information.
Scanning
in
reading.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
15. After gaining an overview by skimming, identify the
section(s) of the text which is relevant.
Start scanning the text by allowing your eyes (or finger)
to move quickly over a page. As soon as your eye
catches a matching word or phrase, stop reading.
When you locate information requiring attention, you
then slow down to read the relevant section more
thoroughly.
How to
scan the
text
effectively.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
17. Before you start scanning,
ask yourself what specific
information you are looking
for.
Underline keywords that
describe best your entire
intention and as you
scan look for those two
or three keywords.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
18. Scanning effectively also require
that you first locate the part or
section of the article where its
most likely that the required
topic is discussed. (relevant
section)
Skim the material first to
decide if it is likely to contain
the facts you need.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
19. Read each question completely
before starting to scan. Choose your
keywords from the question itself.
Look for answer to one question at a
time. Scan separately for each
question.
When you locate a keyword,
read the surrounding text
carefully to find the answer.
Re-read the question to
determine if the answer you
found is the correct answers.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
20. Skimming
Skimming is reading rapidly in
order to get a general overview
of the material.
Skimming tells you what general
information is within a section.
Scanning
Scanning is reading rapidly
in order to find specific
facts.
Scanning helps you to locate
a particular fact.
Skimming VS Scanning.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
22. As the name suggests, intensive reading refers to
reading short texts thoroughly and with clear
goals, such as to answer reading comprehension
questions or to identify how sentences are linked
in matching type questions.
This technique is used for extracting
information accurately from the whole
text. Under this technique, we read every
word for understanding the meaning of
the text.
Skimming, Scanning and Intensive Reading – IELTS Reading.
