IELTS Writing Task 2 - How to Score Highly in Task Achievement

2. How to Score Highly in
Task Achievement. IELTS
Writing Task 2.
IELTS Writing
3. On the next few slides, you will see
the criteria of (Task Descriptors) Task
Achievement for Writing Task 2.
Examiners use them to check how
well a student has achieved the task.
4. The first bullet point in the
band chart makes it very
clear, if you do not address
every part of the essay
question, you will not score
band 7 in “Task
Achievement”.
The first Task Achievement Descriptor.
5. The question in Task 2 very often has more than one part. Each of them
must be addressed as fully as possible.
Consider this question “Some people think that wild animals should not
be kept in zoos. Others believe that there are good reasons for having
zoos. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion“.
An essay about this topic should cover three parts: (1) Reasons not to
keep animals in zoos (2) Advantages of zoos (3) Your own opinion.
If a candidate forgets to cover even one part out of three, he won’t get
more than 5 for Task Achievement.

What does it mean?
12. 2) The second bullet point is
about CLEAR POSITION and
CONCLUSION.
The second Task Achievement Descriptor.
13. As you know there are two types of essays: Discussion Essays
and Argument Essays.
This is a requirement of an argument essay that you must take one side
otherwise; it is not considered an academic essay.
You can have one of the three positions; totally pro, totally against or
partially pro and partially against (moderate position).
This means it is important to plan the answer well beforehand. State your
position in the introduction and then explain your position in more detail in each
paragraph and write a clear conclusion that reaffirms your position.
Why your position in the essay is important?
14. It is important that you must show your opinion if the question is asking
your opinion. Students mostly give their opinions but not clear enough
or do not give their opinion at all. This really confuses the examiner and
they do not clearly understand your viewpoint.
Your opinion matters. You must clearly present your opinion in the
introduction and maintain it throughout the essay.
Your opinion does matter.
15. Often, students have one or two main ideas about the topic that they
introduce in the introduction and then mention them again in the body
paragraphs, and then repeat in them in the conclusion.
According to the second bullet point of the task achievement
descriptor, band 6 candidates may ‘reach a conclusion’ but then
repeat that conclusion within their essay.
This is one of the reasons you should avoid ‘thesis statement’ in the
introduction. If you do, you must be very careful not to sound too
repetitive in your essay.
Make sure you write a clear conclusion and do not sound repetitive.
Conclusion unclear or repetitive (Explanation).
16. Avoid using simple or same sentence structure
again and again.
Always use a variety of sentence structures
and lots of paraphrasing using different words
for expressing the same idea.
Avoid repetition.
17. Strategies for writing a good conclusion.
• Return to the theme mentioned in the introduction.
• Include a brief summary of the essay’s main points.
• Vary your language.
• Do NOT introduce a new idea.
The easiest way to write a conclusion is to paraphrase the introduction that you
have already written. Start with "In conclusion“, “To sum up” and write one or
two sentences that summarises your answer. This way your essay will have a
good finish. This will definitely help to get a high score for your essay.
18. 3) The third point requires that the
response should be with relevant,
extended and supported ideas.
The third Task Achievement Descriptor.
19. The third requirement, in addition to responding to all parts of the
questions and clear position, you need to develop supporting ideas
and think of some suitable examples.
A piece of good advice is to plan your idea beforehand, group them
with relevant examples and present them in a logical sequence.
This means you cannot simply put down ideas. They should
be developed fully and explained with:
1. A relevant example or,
2. An explanation/reason or,
3. An experience of your own.
Putting examples like of your personal experience is the
best way.
The examiner will not check if what you have written as
your personal experience is true or not.
Response should be with relevant, extended and supported ideas
(Explanation).
This the standard instruction
in every question in Task 2.
20. Summary of points needed for a good band in writing task
2 (Task Achievement)
Read the tag line carefully.
Note the general subject and the specific topic that you need to address.
Read the instruction line and see how many aspects of the question you need to address.
Make sure to cover all parts of the question.
Support all points with explanations and examples.
Give equal share to all points with explanations and examples.
Plan paragraphs, put your ideas in a logical order.
Take a clear position throughout the essay and write it clearly in the introduction.
Write a conclusion reaffirming your point.
Use variety of sentence structures and paraphrasing to avoid repetition.
