The Inhumanity Of Zoos
Masters of Disguise: The Inhumanity of Zoos
Every year approximately 175 million people go to aquariums, and zoos to spectate and ponder at the
vast number of wildlife from every corner of the world ( Static Brain, n.p.). Little do visitors know
that they are witnessing firsthand the imprisonment and inhumane treatment of innocent animals.
Wildlife should not be kept captive where they are exposed to overwhelming isolation, a shortened life
span, and in the rare occasion when they are released back into the wild deprived of natural instincts to
help them survive.
Similar to humans, animals are living creatures who require interaction with their own kind; however,
when they are kept in captivity these animals are frequently exposed to isolation. Wild animals
commonly live in groups, whether it be a pride of lions, pack of wolves or a pod of whales. One
particular example pertains to the natural grouping of elephants in the wild versus the complete
solitary environment in which they are kept in when captive. That being said, elephants naturally live
within large family groups and are one of the most socially complex animals outside of man. Yet in
zoos they are kept either alone or with only one or two other unrelated elephants ( Los Angeles Times,
n.p.). As if removing them out of their natural habitat was not enough, zoos separate animal s families
and place them in different exhibits with other animals they are not accustomed to; thus, each
individual is left feeling

Descriptive Essay About Mackinac Island
Ahh. I took a deep breath of sweet air that smelled of fudge, which was accented by manure from one
of the most popular things about Mackinac Island horses! It was awesome to be back here after a year.
Every year, it is hard to leave Mackinac. Every year, leaving is like breaking a chain that keeps you
tied to the island. Every year, I miss the horses and the fudge, the amazing views and skipping rocks in
the water. All of these finer qualities of Mackinac Island and more, makes me not want to leave. Once
back home last year, the hours in a day seemed to drag along, but I d look back at the end of the week
and think: wow, it s been a week already?
A rippling breeze stirred as my family and I coasted into downtown Mackinac Island, which happened
to be cloudy. My family loves the Island. My mom and dad love the porch at the Haan s 1830 Inn, I
love downtown, as well as a few other special places, and so does my brother (for the ice cream, of
course!), and my sister loves pretty much everything! Downtown is one of my favorite parts of the
island. So many bustling tourists, so many busy shops, so many strong, hard working horses. I looked
around as we coasted through downtown, even though I pretty much knew it by heart. I saw some of
my favorite shops and restaurants, like the Chuckwagon, The Pink Pony, the Lilac tree Hotel Spa (
Which has Mackinac Island´s bookstore, a toy store called Great Turtle Toys, a shoe store called

South Secession Dbq
The South s Secession from the Union was caused by society pressing the differences rather than
synthesizing on our similarities, the fear of emancipation, and Abraham Lincoln succeeding in his
candidacy for the 1860 presidential election. All of these factors pushed southerners to conclude
leaving the Union would be more beneficial rather than staying. Society focusing on the differences
between themselves rather than exploring our similarities is one of the main reasons why the south
wanted to secede. Document 1 represents this in a letter from Thomas Jefferson to John Holmes in
response to the Missouri compromise which he says Weight the blessings they will throw away,
against an abstract principle more likely to be effected by union than

The Symbolism Of Colors In A Streetcar Named Desire
Colors represent what a character is doing or how they are as a person. In A Streetcar Named Desire
Blanche is connected to white but does not represent what the color means and Stanley is connecting
to red, strongly connecting to the color. White has the meaning of purity. Blanche Dubois means white
woods but Blanche as a person is nothing like what her name represents, she sleeps around with man
and lies to make herself look good. This is shown when Blanche says I haven t informed him of my
real age! showing that Blanche has and isn t planning on tell Mitch her age, even though her name
means white, truthful person, not a lieing person. This is also revealed when Blanche spills on her
white skirt again revealing that

The Hero Cycle Of Beren And Luthien
The Hero Cycle: Beren The Hero Cycle ties together all heros. It is a literary concept that illustrates
the same pattern that almost all heros, from Beowulf to Harry Potter, follow. This cycle also connects
genres, no matter how different, together in its most basic form. Sci Fi, Fantasy, Mystery, etc.
However, the genre most associated to the Hero Cycle is fantasy, partly due to the Hero Cycles origins
coming from fairy tale and old myths/epics of ancient days. Even modern fantasy has its stake on the
Cycle itself. To share an example, one connected to the founding literary works of modern fantasy, is
the Tale of Beren and Luthien. The Tale of Beren and Luthien is one of the chief cornerstones of
Tolkien s Legendarium. The main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finrod thanked the human by gifting him his royal ring, pledging an oath to Barahir s family line.
Much of Beren s early manhood was fighting alongside these outlaws, being lead by his father until
him and his men died, leaving Beren to wander the land alone, barring only the ring of Finrod
afterwards. Fighting, war and wandering with father and crew is all that Beren new, but with the lost
of his closest kin he was set adrift.
The Call of Adventure is the second step within the Hero Cycle and Beren s call is quite the invitation.
Wandering aimlessly into the forest Dungortheb, Beren falls entranced to the fairey like, elven
princess Luthien, daughter of an elven king and a maia, or demigod. WIth her beauty greatest of all
things, Beren was love struck and called for the dancing maiden, naming her Tinuviel as he called for
her. She turned to him and it was instant love, though a secret one. She, an immortal, and him, mortal,
meant their love could not last and be of error, as well as her royal father not being pleased. This is the
closest we get to the Refusal of the Call, being one of few divergences with the Cycle and the story.
This is due to the fact that Beren never hesitates to follow any ungodly task to win Luthien s hand in
marriage, and is quite literally stated that he felt no hesitation. The fact that their love could not be,
and keeping it secret, was the only hesitation displayed throughout the

Hurricanes And Climate Disaster Events
1. Summary
Hurricanes and climate disaster events caused losses exceeding $110 billion in damages and 377
deaths across the United States, in the year 2012. This makes the year 2012 the second costliest on
record, after the year 2005 which witnessed $160 billion losses due to hurricanes, including hurricane
Katrina. Hurricane Sandy was the major driver of substantial damage costs in the year 2012
(approximately $65 billion). During the 1980 2005 period, the United States sustained over $500
billion in overall inflation adjusted damages/costs due to extreme climate events. The analysis of
available data shows a significantly increasing trend in billion dollar disasters. The economic impact
of hurricanes is huge and there is a need to improve the resiliency and the sustainability of the built
environment under extreme wind events, to protect our citizens and to reduce the massive economic
losses brought by hurricanes. The purpose of this project is to significantly reduce devastating
hurricane effects on infrastructure by implementing solutions to provide strategic guidance on the
aerodynamic mitigation of buildings, to help lessen roof suctions, a major source of economic losses
and community disruption. In addition, solar panels arranged aerodynamically to reduce both roof
suction and panel s loads will be investigated, in an attempt to create safer and greener buildings, as
well as to meet stringent wind requirements.

Rhetorical Criticism Of Reagan s Challenger Speech
A Rhetorical Criticism of Reagan s Challenger Address
Lu Jia
This essay will attempt to analyze Ronald Reagan s Challenger address in terms of the rhetorical
situation theorized by Dr. Blitzer and elaborated by Dr. Zarefsky in his book Public Speaking. The
effectiveness of the Challenger address will be evaluated by carefully identifying and examining each
of the four components of the rhetorical situation within the context of this speech.
Background
On the morning of January 28th, 1986, Americans watched in shock and horror as the space shuttle
Challenger exploded only 74 seconds after its launch, killing all seven crew members on board
including a high school teacher Christa McAuliffe. Thousands, including families of the crew and
schoolchildren ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He highly praised the courage and adventurous spirit of the crew members ( they had a hunger to
explore the universe ) and acknowledged their mission as a service to the country ( they served all of
us ).
Another sub audience who needed more guidance and consolation were the schoolchildren, especially
those who witnessed the disaster in person. Reagan briefly changed his tone to that of a grandfather
and tried to ease his children s fear by explaining to them sometimes painful things like this happen .
He also encouraged them to be brave and carry on with Challenger s legacy by saying the Challenger
crew was pulling us into the future, and we ll continue to follow them .
Reagan then reassured that the space program would continue to operate and what happened today
does nothing to diminish it . This message sought to protect the ongoing space programs and was
dedicated to the last sub audience of his speech: the NASA people. He acknowledged their hard work
and expressed sympathy for their loss of friends and coworkers.

Canada is a country that is built on people that emigrated from different parts of the world. The policy
of multiculturalism in Canada was introduced during 1970 s to make sure people don t feel obliged to

The same rules apply to the UK except to the second generation of citizen by descent (Macklin
Crepeau, 2010). As a result Canada s transmission of citizenship by descent is much stricter than the
UK and also different from those of the US (Macklin Crepeau, 2010). At any given time over the past
century, almost 3% of the world s people were living outside of their country of birth, suggesting that
birthright citizenship is the most acquired citizenship method in the world and almost 97% of the
world s population are citizens of the country of their birth (Macklin Crepeau, 2010). Many say that
the rules of birthright citizenship could be under inclusive (for example, a noncitizen who lived in
Canada since he/she was an infant and spent their entire life there is still not a citizen) and some say it
is over inclusive (such as a person born in Chicago to a Canadian mother from Toronto, who never set
foot in Canada is still a citizen). This opens up a debate about the ideal set of citizenship rules but it
also puts an emphasis that there really can t be any perfect set of rules (Macklin Crepeau, 2010).

Overall Community health is a priority in our society these days. Cardiovascular diseases can be
developed in both nutrition and physical activity. There are studies shown all around the globe that
prove cardiovascular diseases can be developed in both nutrition and physical activity.
Cardiovascular Disease also known as (CVD) is the number one cause of death in the United States.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about one in four Americans die
from the disease every year. Researchers presented study results showing that Egyptian mummies,
some 3,500 years old, had evidence of heart disease specifically atherosclerosis, which narrows the
arteries. As we can see CVD has been present for quite some time now.

The Belle Of New York Music Analysis
The late nineteenth century was a time of extraordinary theatrical bounty , and the initial stages of
nonsensical musical comedy. Shows that had loose plots concerning ordinary characters and settings
were prevalent. Most of which, would never experience American revival. (Musicals 101 Gay 90 s).
The Belle of New York, performed in 1897, was a part of this lighthearted musical comedy period.
When people ponder the Gay 90 s , The Belle of New York is unquestionably a show that comes to
mind (Musicals101 Gay 90 s ). The Belle of New York is a musical comedy in two acts, produced at
the Casino Theater in New York, New York, on September 28th, 1897 (Ewen). Music was written by
Gustave Kerker (Hischak 57), the book and lyrics by Hugh Morton, and staging by George W. Lederer

immense number of times in someone s life that can be hard for them; people use a vast range of
different methods of controlling their hard times. Powaqqatsi and Prison Break involve people coping
with difficult times with the use of drug usage, individualism, and relaxation. Both the movie,

helping bring the dirt to be sifted for gold. There was one man with a yellow shirt that was walking the
opposite direction of everyone else on his way down the hill. He was setting himself apart from the
crowd that was bringing bags up the hill, and then walking in a line back for more. By going down the
hill instead of helping get more bags, it shows how selfish he is, and how he does not care for the
people in his village. In Powaqqatsi when the people are rowing boats in the water, there are two
people in the back of the boat that were not rowing. By not rowing the boat they show individualism
because they are setting themselves apart from the crowd. Those who are not rowing show less
sympathy toward the people they are with. In Prison Break, Michael Scofield was an independent
worker and did not like to get people involved in his dangerous cases. He would come up with the
plan and execute it on his own so he could feel the pride himself once his brother was set free.

Conversion of Alcohol to Alkyl Halides Essay
Conversion of Alcohols to Alkyl Halides Ankita Patel August 6, 2013 Introduction This lab consisted
of the conversion of alcohols into alkyl halides through common substitution methods. These methods
include SN1 and SN2 mechanism, both of which can occur for this type of reaction. For both
reactions, the first step of protonation will be to add hydrogen to the OH group and then the rest of the
reaction will proceed according to the type of mechanism. SN1 reactions form a cation intermediate
once the H2O group leaves, then allowing a halide (such as Br) to attack the positively charged
reagent1. On the other hand, SN2 reactions are one step mechanism in which no intermediate is
formed and the halide attaches as the leaving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, one could safely assume the product from 1 propanol was 1 bromopropane. This is mainly due
the C H wag around 1260cm 1 indication it was a terminal alkyl halide. This reaction went through
SN2 mechanism not only because the alcohol was primary but also because there were no
rearrangements. If a rearrangement would have occurred, it would have indicated that it was a SN1
mechanism. Further analysis was then done to determine the exact identity of the product and the
chemical makeup. B B C C AA B B C C AA Figure 2: NMR Spectrum for 1 propanol The results
from the NMR of 1 propanol showed 3 different prominent peaks with the peak at 2.2 cm 1 being the
acetone. Because 1 bromopropane has three non equivalent hydrogens it was found to represent this
set of NMR data. The other product, 2 bromopropane only had 2 different types of hydrogens and
would have only had 2 peaks. Further analysis of the structure of 1 bromopropane showed that the
hydrogens closest the bromine group were an indication of peak A in the graph. Because of the
electronegativity of the bromine, this peak was located further downfield. There were 2 neighboring
hydrogens so using the n+1 rule gave the 3 peaks. Going down peak B showed the next carbon which
had 5 neighboring hydrogens thus giving 6 peaks. Finally, the carbon furthest away from the bromine
was found at peak C. It had 2 neighboring hydrogens and provided 3 peaks.

Cursive Writing
To Cursive or Not to Cursive?
A fifteen year old straight A student walked into the Department of Motor Vehicles with her mother.
The excitement of becoming a driver for the first time quickly faded when the girl was required to

if her child s generation was filled with cursive illiterates? Cursive writing should be a curriculum
requirement for grade school students not only because it is required on legal documents but it is
important to understand information written in cursive and it improves penmanship.
Teenagers and young adults are increasingly faced with embarrassment because of their lacking
knowledge in the art of handwriting. For many young adults it starts with getting a driver s license. As
the amount of things that an individual wants in life increases the more their signature is needed. The
big things like a car and house can be thwarted for a short time by living in a city with public

Shhhh! my mother whispered as the tanks rumbled by under the cold Afghan night, the stars twinkling

heading toward the Afghanistan Pakistan border the very place our destination lay.

As dawn approached with a faint hint of turquoise along the horizon in front of us and we finally

in our journey, but of the steps already behind us. I knew nothing of war, politics, or Communism. All
I could grasp was that I was leaving the only home I had known for the first three and a half years of
my life for an unknown, an abstraction, a void that held neither the warmth nor the familiarity of my

Depth of field depth of field, also called focus range is the distance between the nearest and farthest
objects in a scene. It decreases focus on anything other than the picture and makes the object it is
focused on appear closer and sharper than everything else in the background. Rules of odds The rule
of odds suggests that an odd number of subjects in an image is more interesting than an even number.
Therefore if you have more than one subject in your picture, the suggestion is to choose an
arrangement with at least three subjects to make it symmetrical and visually appeasing. Centred
composition Central composition is often calm and static. It places the one subject in the very centre
of the shot. By composing your subject in the centre, you are basically placing him in front of the
viewer as if attempting to introduce them. It also helps emphasize the space around your subject as it
becomes the very thing that leads the viewer s gaze towards where you, the creator, intended it to go.

with an internet connection can access. Not just government research centers and scientists with
access to top of the of the line equipment. As the 1990 s continued, the Internet continued to globalize.
In 1992, Erwise was the first successful Internet browser due to the graphical user interface software it

of all internet browsing activity. As the Internet started to grow faster, companies such America Online

The Impacts Of The Darfur Crisis
It is about fourteen years now since the outbreak of the bloody conflict in Darfur region, western part
of the Republic of Sudan. The crisis in Darfur is not an unintentional tragedy, or a human devastation
that humanitarian intercession can annul or solve. Darfur conflict is as not straightforward as
presented in the media, which casts the clash in requisite ethnic conflicts between Arabs and black
Africans. The veracity is far more messed up. It is a human being catastrophe that finally reinvented
into a sadistic cycle of brutality in February, 2003.
The Darfur crisis is not only a predicament for the Sudanese, but is also a regional quandary. The
crisis is menacing the peace and stability in other parts of Sudan, also its impacts transcend ... Show

Eden Mutters Alternate Ending
This is the end. Adan mutters. Eden quickly gets out of bed and stands to the side of Adan. As soon as
Eden catches sight of the view Adan is witnessing, despair writes itself onto his face.
Oh no. Eden whispers.
Giant balls of flames are falling from the blackened skies destroying every and anything it touches.
People are outside going berserk, as the earth beneath them is rising and shooting out lava.
This is the end. Eden says in a way where he is confirming Adan s last statement. Suddenly the earth
beneath Adan s and Eden s house starts to rise and tears falls down from both of their eyes. Adan grabs
Eden s left hand, intertwining his fingers with his. Both Eden s and Adan s golden green emerald ring,

While some of Stephen king s work is incredibly long and challenging to read,

The Past In George Orwell s Animal Farm
The past doesn t define who we are now and who we will become in the future. It is simply a guide in
our lives that show us what is right from wrong. Our history has the ability to teach us more than we
know, for it holds the key to something that has never been discovered. George Orwell s masterpiece,
Animal Farm, replicates a moment in history that will never be forgotten. It is a story that shows
courage and tenacity, as well as fear and tragedy. This book displays many important lessons and
morals. There are quotes that pertain to this story in a way like no other. They uncover the meaning to
what is behind, Animal Farm. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
George Santayana This quote from Santayana shows how valuable it is to relive in the moments
before your time. If you are unable to recall what happened in the past, there is a great chance that the
mistakes and flaws that were made then are going to be made again. In the book, the animals
contemplate about what world they are currently living in, compared to what life was like when Mr.
Jones had owned the farm. They wondered if life was better now that they had control. In the text it
states, Sometimes the older ones among them racked their dim memories and tried to determine
whether in the early days of the Rebellion, when Jones s expulsion was still recent, things had been
better or worse than now. They could not remember. The lack of memory had caused some of them to

This isn t a place for personal opinions so I ll simply tell this in a completely unbiased manner. So,
everyone asks why isn t Islam the majority religion of the Philippines? Just look at it, it s in a group of
islands inhabited by Muslims. It s semi surrounded by Muslim island nations. Prior to the arrival of
the Spanish, the Philippines was an Islamic state for the most part. Various Muslim empires ruled the
Philippines, like for example Mindanao and Visayas were ruled by Malays. Luzon, was ruled by
Arabs. Other parts were Hindu and Buddhist empires. The Spanish, had just finished off a Muslim
kingdom that had once ruled the Iberian Peninsula, both Spain and Portugal. When the Spanish got to
the Philippines, they were disgusted by the presence of Muslims. So, they converted 90% of Filipinos
to the Roman Catholic faith. So why wasn t Malaysians and Indonesians converted to Christianity?
This is because the British and Dutch didn t care about convering people. So the Malays got to
practice their faiths freely. Muslims are still a minority in the Philippines, but they often face social
discrimination and social persecution. Which is why, a lot of the Filipino Muslims flee to Malaysia or
Brunei down south. Some Muslims in the Philippines also want independance. That is why I see it a
negative aspect, because religious hatred exists in the Philippines. But I m not a Muslim, I don t agree

Analysis Of The 17th And 17th Centuries By Ben Jonson
Plagiarism in the 17th and 18th Centuries
A line that appears on the cover page of Poetaster: A Comical Satyr, written in 1601 by Ben Jonson
(1572 1637), the English dramatist and poet, had appeared earlier in Martial s Book VII, Verse 12, an
epigram consisting of 99 verses. We know that Jonson used ideas taken from Ovid (Publius Ovidius
Naso, 43 BCE CE 17), Horace, and Seneca and that his name appears in investigations of plagiarism
in English literature. According to one source, Jonson invented the pejorative term playwright in 1687
to describe someone who had put together the work of others. Jonson alluded to the works of Horace
and Virgil and to Rome. Jonson wrote that the name Canidia was but a borrowed name and that the
ditty was borrowed. The words were Horace s, he stated, Hang him plagiary. This use of the term
plagiary appeared in 1601. It referred to someone who forcefully possessed another. It had appeared
earlier, in 1555, as plagiaire (French), and, in 1577, as plagium (Latin), translated as a net to entangle
game, but was used in English Civil Law when referring to kidnapping or man stealing. It appeared
also in July 1607, when Thomas Legge, Master of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, referred to
the fact that someone had kidnapped his ideas for a play, The Destruction of Jerusalem. The use of
Latin or French was common among the educated and upper classes of that time, many of whom
would have been familiar with one or both languages. Alexander Pope

Thomas Hobbe s Philosophical Political Piece
Thomas Hobbe s philosophical political piece The Leviathan argues that society functions most
effectively if all state and commonwealth is delegated by an all powerful sovereign, and that without it
we are in a state of chaos, otherwise titled by Hobbes as the state of nature (Thomas Hobbes, 2002, p.
181). I will argue that it is not possible to acknowledge what life is like in the state of nature without
fully acknowledging that life in the state of nature leads to an all powerful sovereign that ultimately
leads to the benefit of the people due to humanity s innate fear of death and desire for civilization. To
elaborate, in humanity s most primal state of being, stripped away from all states of authority and
government, civilization is in a state of aggressive disarray that is nasty, brutish, and short (Thomas
Hobbes, 2002, p. 181). Without the Leviathan, we as humans are primal, aggressive, chaotic, and
uncivilized. As a result of this innate reaction of pandemonium in absence of an appointed authority,
in order to function effectively as members of society we run into the arms of an all powerful
sovereign, which cannot be challenged and therefore has limitless power (Thomas Hobbes, 2002, p.
180, p. 181). It is important to note the Hobbes Leviathan assumes that humans have a biological
yearn to be civilized, and a biological yearn to fear death, being the two drives we have to seek
civilized refuge in the all powerful sovereign. Therefore, given the

Algae Research Paper
One world environmental issue that we have to turn our attention to is poaching, specifically in Africa,
of animals such as elephants, zebras, lions, black rhinos, and mountain gorillas. Last year alone, over
35000 elephants were killed for their ivory tusks. Ivory is sold illegally for up to $1000 per pound, and
the tusks are often carved into jewelry, religious figurines, utensils, and other small trinkets. Around
2000 zebras remain in the wild, and these animals are sought after for their black and white striped
skins, which are often made into clothing or accessories. The surviving lion population is a mere 15%
of what it used to be, and that is because farmers keep killing them before the lions kill their livestock.
Lions are often hunted for fun too, most recently Cecil. The black rhino population is down 97.6%
since 1960, and these animals are killed for their valuable horns. The horns are believed to heal
various ailments, when in reality, the horns do not cure anything, it s all myth. Fewer than 900

My Life After The World
Margaret Mead once said: Never believe that a few caring people can t change the world. For, indeed,
that s all who ever have. This quote certainly holds true for me. When I was in elementary school, a
caring man changed my life without knowing it. In second grade, my mother signed me and my little
sister up for ice skating class. For an extremely brief time period, I had visions of becoming a figure
skating prodigy, but they immediately dissipated as soon as I stepped onto the ice. I couldn t take a
step without slipping, but I was terrified of falling. To get to the area of the arena where the class was
taking place, I had to hang onto the side of the wall and slowly push myself sideways.
When class started, the teacher first taught us to skate across the ice by stepping outward with our
skates. Our first task was to skate across the ice arena. I felt like I was two again. I took tiny baby
steps across the ice, afraid to fall. I wasn t sure why I was deathly scared of falling. I was bundled up
in snowpants and a heavy winter coat, so falling wouldn t have hurt much anyway, and it wasn t like
falling was an extremely horrible mistake. But I was afraid to take a big step and fall. In life, I have
never wanted to take big risks. I was always careful not to make a mistake and look like a fool.
I looked ahead. My sister, Grace, was already halfway to the other side of the ice arena. She fell again
and again, but got back up and skated faster with each fall. Every time she

Gender Stereotypes In Australia
It can be argued that it is the students and academic teaching staff themselves who are forcing females
into female type jobs and males into male type jobs . Connell et al. (2013) discuss gender cannot be
argued against as being irrelevant to educational outcomes and student performance. A significant
factor in Australia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries was the expansion of education on a
massive scale, with the result being a school conceiving social class (Connell et al. 2013, p.106).
Kimball (1995) relates working concepts of meritocracy are closely linked to science. Science is
believed to be true and objective, a more meritorious type of knowledge that has accurate ideas,
methodologies and people. Science automatically assumes that it is elevated above other forms of
knowledge, becoming apparent in scientists one way method of communication, with an attitude that
there is nothing to be gained by communicating with a non scientific person (Kimball, 1995, p.141).

Sociological Theories of Suicide
Paper Proposal: Sociological Theories of Suicide
SOC 101
Introduction Suicide is the act of killing yourself. It is the 11th leading cause of death in America
(CDC 2009). I have never had any intentions on committing suicide and I never really understood why
people commit suicide that s why I chose this topic to help me understand what problems people go
through that makes them do such a thing. Sociology is the study of social behavior and the culture of
humans. There are numerous reasons like financial stress, family problems or mental health disorders
that lead to suicide. The number one cause of suicide is untreated depression. The issues that were just

Durkheim was very famous for his study of suicide. He defined the four types of suicide and
supported his theory that changes in nonmaterial social facts cause differences in suicide rates.
Durkheim s theory consisted of finding a problem which was suicide. He then came up with a
dependent variable which was the suicide rate. The social forces became the independent variable. The
hypothesis would be what the suicide rate would vary with. When he collected his date Durkheim
would go into detail about each individuals life and any uprising problems that he could find. He
would then analyze the data into four categories which are the three most common types of suicide
(egoistic suicide, altruistic suicide and anomic suicide). After looking at the date and matching it up
with the proper suicide type Durkheim would then draw conclusions or form a theory. These are the
details of the three most common suicides. Egoistic suicide is committed by people who are weak and
supported by membership in a cohesive social group. They start to depend a huge amount on
themselves than on group goals and rules of conduct to sustain them in their lives. When stressful
times are around they feel isolated and helpless. Altruistic suicide is committed by people who are
extremely committed to group norms and objectives and who notice their own lives as insignificant.
These suicides involved dying for some type of cause. Anomic

Saving And Planning For The Future
Saving and planning for the future is an important task that every individual should plan for. However,
many times individuals feel overwhelmed and are anxious about how it is possible to survive and plan
for the future. The Bible gives us good insight into how we should plan and manage our finances that
pleases the Lord. 2 Corinthians 9:6 states [w]hoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and
whoever sows generously will also reap generously (ESV). It is possible to save for the future while at
the same time pleasing the Lord. For those who love the Lord and live by his directions knows that
God is a God of plans. Jeremiah tells us For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord,
plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and hope (Jeremiah 29:11, NASV).
Concerning long term finance, there is one story, in particular, the story of Joseph the King of Dreams.
In this story, God gave two prisoners a dream and gave Joseph the ability to interpret them. That
revelation of the dreams came to pass and in time, Pharaoh had a dream. The news came to him of
Joseph s ability to interpret the dream, and he sent for Joseph. The dream was that there would be
seven years of good and plenty, followed by seven years of famine and destitution. Upon this
revelation, Pharaoh made Joseph ruler over the house and land. God gave Joseph a contingency plan.

A Study On Easter Island
Easter Island has long been a puzzling intrigue in the minds of historians, scholars, and the common
folk alike. What happened to the once tropical lush forests? How did a civilization erect such
impressive statues and why were they erected? And where are the people who erected these statues
now? Many of these questions have been explained over the years with circumstantial evidence and
preposterous assumptions. However, through careful analysis and meticulous evidence gathering, lead
scholars like Joanne Van Tilburg, Jared Diamond, Terry Hunt, and Carl Lipo, have established a
comprehensive literature on the history and likely events that happened on Easter Island.
One of the debates that continues today is centered primarily around the deforestation of Rapa Nui. An
island once thriving with lush tropical forests. On one side scholar s Tilburg and Diamond attribute the
deforestations to societal conflict and degradation while on the other, Hunt and Lipo argue that
deforestation was the result of combined human and rat resource depletion. I believe that Easter Island
represents a tragedy of the commons scenario in which the isolation of the island, from any other
island, contributed to the in fighting for resources (trees), power (chiefdoms), and prestige (moai),
ultimately leading to the extinction of a people and their environment. Diamond in Easter Island

Whiskey is a unique spirit, with a unique taste. Period. While it would be wrong to say whiskey is

The Plot Of Dorothy Gale, An Orphan, And Her Dog Toto
The plot revolves around Dorothy Gale, an orphan, and her dog Toto. They live with her Aunt Em and
Uncle Henry, and three farm hands, in Kansas. Initially, the film is not in color and depicts a drab and
colorless environment. Her dog bites a neighbor, Almira Gulch, who gets approval to take the dog, for
euthanasia. Toto escapes from Gulch, returns to Dorothy who runs away with it. During her escape she
meets a phony Professor, Marvel, who convinces her to return home just as a tornado strikes. Shen she
arrives at home, everyone is in the storm cellar, she cannot get in so she goes to the house when the
tornado takes it into the sky. It seems that this is where her dream begins since she see many things
that are not physically likely; Gulch riding a bicycle and turning into a witch, two men rowing a boat,
a older lady in a rocking chair knitting, and several farm animals. She lands in Muhchkinland in Oz
where she opens the door and sees the land in color. She begins her quest to return home, directed by
the Muhckins to take the Yellow Brick Road to Oz and the Wizard. The lead characters as she
encounters along the way many characters that seem to have relationships with her waking life
including; 1. Muchkins (small and non threatening people who welcome her and give her awards), 2.
three companions on her quest (Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion the farm hands), 3.
three witches, (one that the house lands on and at the direction of the Good Witch Glinda,

Predictive Validation Paper
While it can be difficult to find that there are processes, procedures, and business decisions in place
that may not be working as intended, for leaders, analytics are unavoidable as the insights gained add
value and drive leaders to make better evidence based people decisions (Hirsch, Sachs Toryfter, 2015).
Analytics are used in various business practices including the validation of pre employment
assessments. Validation is one of the most essential aspects of any legitimate pre employment
assessment program. Predictive validity is established when the scores from a measurement procedure
generate accurate predictions about the construct it has been designed to measure. (e.g., intelligence,
achievement, burnout, etc.). In a predictive validation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consider for example a university that is looking to hire 20 faculty members to fill positions within its
math and science department from an applicant pool of 125. An assessment is given to identify the
most qualified applicants. An optimal study design would use and test predictive validity
simultaneously placing the 20 applicants with the best scores in the vacant positions. After 6 months,
the hires work performance would be assessed. From there the assessment and work performances
(criterion) can be correlated. The result is high reliability and high content validity. Chances for
adverse impact are also greatly reduced. This approach also provides verification of job relatedness of
the assessment. It is also difficult for applicants to fake job proficiency which ensures a more positive
correlation in the relationship between test scores and job performance. The validation of assessments
aid managers in gaining an understanding of the market and formulating employer branding.
Assessment validation is also the key driver in objectively quantifying test results. Through the use of
predictive validation managers are able to confirm that the items included in an assessment accurately
represent the constructs being analyzed and that appraisal based on logic and

Philadelphia Personal Statement
The city of Philadelphia holds a unique and permanent place in my heart. As an African American
male, I appreciate opportunities that the city of Philadelphia provided me in contrast to my father s
experience up growing in the North Carolina. He attended segregated schools through high school and
when he posed the possibility of attending the University of Syracuse for college to his guidance
counselor, she told him he was too dark skinned to apply to there. As a result he attended all black
institutions for college and law school. While society has changed significantly, I credit the rich and
rigorous opportunities the city has provided me. My teachers at Meredith elementary recognized my
potential at a young age and pushed me to achieve that potential. Central High School provided me
with a public education that allowed me to compete with any student in the country. The University of
Pennsylvania developed the critical thinking skills that provided a foundation for my legal education.
In addition to the excellent educational opportunities, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a 1L, I serve on the executive board in the Black Law Students Association and the Business Law
Association. I believe that maintaining a positive atmosphere in new environments means taking on an
active rather than a passive role in cultivating the culture. In addition, I also have continued to take the
same proactive approach to my legal education that I did in teaching. Upon hearing that law school
provides very little guidance in becoming a transactional lawyer, I helped BLA organize a panel for
transactional attorneys to provide guidance to students. In addition, I entered the Transactional
Drafting Competition where I drafted and redlined an asset purchase agreement and received feedback

Japanese Interpersonal Relationships
The first topic is about a worker s relation towards his or her workmates with consideration of the
working culture and environment. There are three principal factors which affects interpersonal
relationship at workplace, I think; tendency of finding a value in working hard, the hidden but strict
rule of having worship for the boss, and the subjection of women. I will take up each factor.
First of all, I ll describe the effect of Japanese tendency of finding value in working hard. One of the
reason is that Japanese are concerned about how they are perceived by the others. I don t know the
absolute reason but Japanese tend to be a group oriented. In order not to disrupt the atmosphere at
workplace, they pay much attention for their behavior. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here in Japan from right after the war to recent days, since the family style that the man work outside
and earn money, and the woman keep their house and educate children had been common, some
people still believed that men are good at working and women are not. That causes that men s forcing
women to do indirect and supportive work, such as drawing tea, taking a copy or being a acceptance.
There are two extreme examples. First, in a meeting on business, a company was suggesting idea to
the partner company. At first, a woman of the suggesting company spoke, but the members of partner
company didn t hear anything as if to say that suggestion by the woman was indifferent. However, the
speaker changed from the woman to another man of the suggesting company, the listeners started to
hear keenly with nodding even though he said completely the same thing as her. The other example is
the complaint. A man had a complaint with a product, so went to a shop. The shop respond to the
problem by appearing a responsible woman at the shop. However, the man didn t know she took in
charge of the shop and said the responsible person must appear! . He took it for granted that the
responsible person was a man. As the examples show, there are still many idea of the subjection of
women in Japan. Which makes hard to maintain pleasant relationship with anyone at

The Discovery And Observation Of The Cosmic Microwave...
The Discovery and Observation of the Cosmic Microwave Background: Implications for Cosmology
On a spring day in late May in 1964, the future of our understanding of the universe was greatly
influenced, arguable on accident. Two radio astronomers discovered something unusual, not with their
eyes, but with their ears. Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson essentially heard the buzz that the universe
was echoing into their headphones, but they could not wrap their head around what it was. The two
scientists were bewildered by the odd humming sound that was picked up by their labs horn antenna
and they had no idea the significance of what they were listening to. They thought it must have been
some sort of interference from a secondary source in or around their lab and antenna. They did
everything in their power to eliminate anything that could possibly interfere with the radio signals that
they were receiving; they went as far as getting rid of pigeons that had their nest on top of the
astronomer s antenna. It was not until they successfully got rid of anything that could potentially
explain this noise that they came to the exciting conclusion that what they stumbled upon must be big.
With this knowledge in mind, the idea that something big was at their fingertips, they had a few
questions on their mind that needed answering. First and foremost, they obviously wanted and needed
to figure out what exactly the noise they were hearing was. Secondly, they wanted to know what

High School Homework
Introduction
Traditionally, a high school schedule consists of seven or eight class periods, each one lasting 45 to 50
minutes. Since 1964, when Joliet West High School opened its doors, it has used a traditional seven to
eight period school day. 53 years later, problems are starting to arise with how the school day is laid
out. Recently, students are becoming more involved in sports, jobs, and extracurricular activities, and
the traditional schedule is making it harder for students to keep up with the work from seven different
classes. This task is especially difficult for students in honors and AP classes.
According to Allie Bidwell, an education reporter for U.S. World and News Report, the average high
school students spends about eighteen hours a week on homework. That works out to be about four
hours every night. In my experience, I average around two hours of homework every night, still a long
time spent on homework. At Joliet West, students are released from school at 3:15; if they go home
and start their homework right away, all their homework could be completed by eight o clock.
However, a majority of students do not have the luxury of having all night to work on homework.
With about half of students participating in a sport, many have practice after school until six o clock.
This pushes back their night, so instead of getting done with homework at eight, they will not finish
until ten o clock. A large portion of high school students experience this

Ambush by Tim O Brien
Commentary on Ambush by Tim O Brien Contradiction in the mind, we struggle between decisions.
Whether it is correct or not, it leaves an indelible memory. In Tim O Brien s confessional writing,
Ambush, he creates a flashback and recalls his memory in Vietnam. With detail descriptions, Tim O
Brien expresses his guilt towards killing an innocent young man. Furthermore, reinforcing his
opposition against war with the writing. In paragraph 2 and 3, Tim O Brien has created a flashback to
present his regretful memory of the past. He was involved in the Vietnam War and accidentally killed
a young man. However, paragraph 2 only consists of short sentences and without commas, it is only a
brief summary of what happened. This paragraph may lead ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The fog is the motif that represents the memory of the author, an expression of guilt and culpability.
He was part of the fog The first impression the author has towards the Vietnam soldier. The fog is
misty and he cannot see the man clearly. He does t know the man or hasn t seen his face, but he kills
the man under stress. It isn t until the dead man dropped to the floor with a star hole in the eyes that
the author feels fear and guilt. Although his comrade keeps on comforting him, his culpability left an
utterly indelible mark in his mind. In reality, after the war, every time the author thinks or sees a fog,
he relates to the war and brings back the painful memory. Fog triggers his memory and hinders his
feeling. Furthermore, fog has another hidden meaning, this is a usage of the ambiguity technique. The
author is trying to bring out uncertainty with the fog. It s opaque, and may not be seen through. And
just like the situation the author is facing, to kill or not to kill, uncertainty rises, it is a dilemma. Tim O
Brien is stuck between choices, in doubt whether he should tell the incident to his daughter, whether
he should kill the man or not, the contradiction makes him feel unbearably guilty. This is what the
author intends to accentuate: war should be discouraged, it is the cause of disaster. The author strongly
opposes to war as it only stirs up painful memories and death.

Cosmos Plant Hydration Lab Report
The graphs and data shows the progression of the Cosmos plant while being hydrated with three
different solutions: water, lemon, and baking soda. They all have different pH levels and affect the rate
of growth. The quantitative data shows the height of the plants. Based on the data table, the water or
neutral pH had the most height, then lemon juice, and lastly the baking soda mixture. The baking soda
mixture left the plants dead after the fourteenth day of the experiment. The data shows that each plant
grew from 1 2.5 inches everytime they were checked. This can be represented by trial one of water
when the sprout grew from 3.5 inches to 5 inches. Based on the qualitative data, the baking soda
plants showed little growth and progressively ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Cosmos flower was used to test this. Water has a neutral pH which is generally the best substance
for any type of plant to grow and be healthy. However, the Cosmos also grows well when hydrated
with a more acidic substance. When hydrated with a substance that is more of abase, it will not grow
successfully, which is proven by the data since they died after the third check and became wilted. The
hypothesis was not proven because the plants watered with the acidic lemon juice grew more
successfully than base substance, which was predicted to keep the plants healthy. The tallest plants
that grew was hydrated with water and was 13 inches tall and the shortest living plant was hydrated
with the baking soda solution and was 2 inches tall. The control of this experiment was the plant, the
Cosmos Bipinnatus because it did not change. The amount of time passed in days was changing,
which makes it the independent variable. The dependent variable was the height of the plant, along
with its overall health. After composing the procedure, it was observed that the measurements were
off, which was an experimental error. The mixture between baking and water was too thick and did
not saturate the soil. This could have caused the plants to die more quickly and the pH may not have
affected the data as much if it weren t for this

Advantage And Disadvantage Of Plastic
glass fibers which are commonly used in commercial industries. They are E glass and S glass; the E
glass has the lowest of all commercially available reinforcing fibers which makes the reason for its
widespread use in the industry. The S glass was originally developed for the aircraft components and
missile casting; as they have the highest tensile strength of all fibers in use [29].
3. Carbon fibre reinforced polypropylene
When carbon fibers are reinforced with polypropylene composites they provide high impact resistance
and rigidity, which makes it favorable to use in automotive and structural engineering. In the recent
years more functions such as easy paintability, low coefficient of thermal expansion and scratch
resistant property has been a great concern. Automotive parts such as bumpers faces are usually
painted prior to installation. This is done because the polypropylene resin has ... Show more content

However the strength and stability of polymer fiber interface determines the final properties of the
polypropylene composites. The main advantages of glass fiber reinforced polypropylene composites
are high tensile strength, low cost, high chemical resistance and good insulating properties. The
disadvantages are high specific gravity, low tensile modulus, high hardness and low fatigue resistance.
One of the methods used to improve final properties of the glass fiber polypropylene is by matrix
modification. In this method, polar functional groups are introduced to polypropylene chains so as to
improve compatibility with polar strengthening and achieve a homogenous dispersion of fillers,
reinforcements and additives [37]. Apart from automotive bumpers glass reinforced polymers are used
for structure and function parts such as washing machine parts, axial fan blades of industries,
irrigation equipment parts, skeleton of instrument panel

  • 2. The Inhumanity Of Zoos Masters of Disguise: The Inhumanity of Zoos Every year approximately 175 million people go to aquariums, and zoos to spectate and ponder at the vast number of wildlife from every corner of the world ( Static Brain, n.p.). Little do visitors know that they are witnessing firsthand the imprisonment and inhumane treatment of innocent animals. Wildlife should not be kept captive where they are exposed to overwhelming isolation, a shortened life span, and in the rare occasion when they are released back into the wild deprived of natural instincts to help them survive. Similar to humans, animals are living creatures who require interaction with their own kind; however, when they are kept in captivity these animals are frequently exposed to isolation. Wild animals commonly live in groups, whether it be a pride of lions, pack of wolves or a pod of whales. One particular example pertains to the natural grouping of elephants in the wild versus the complete solitary environment in which they are kept in when captive. That being said, elephants naturally live within large family groups and are one of the most socially complex animals outside of man. Yet in zoos they are kept either alone or with only one or two other unrelated elephants ( Los Angeles Times, n.p.). As if removing them out of their natural habitat was not enough, zoos separate animal s families and place them in different exhibits with other animals they are not accustomed to; thus, each individual is left feeling ... • 3. Descriptive Essay About Mackinac Island Ahh. I took a deep breath of sweet air that smelled of fudge, which was accented by manure from one of the most popular things about Mackinac Island horses! It was awesome to be back here after a year. Every year, it is hard to leave Mackinac. Every year, leaving is like breaking a chain that keeps you tied to the island. Every year, I miss the horses and the fudge, the amazing views and skipping rocks in the water. All of these finer qualities of Mackinac Island and more, makes me not want to leave. Once back home last year, the hours in a day seemed to drag along, but I d look back at the end of the week and think: wow, it s been a week already? A rippling breeze stirred as my family and I coasted into downtown Mackinac Island, which happened to be cloudy. My family loves the Island. My mom and dad love the porch at the Haan s 1830 Inn, I love downtown, as well as a few other special places, and so does my brother (for the ice cream, of course!), and my sister loves pretty much everything! Downtown is one of my favorite parts of the island. So many bustling tourists, so many busy shops, so many strong, hard working horses. I looked around as we coasted through downtown, even though I pretty much knew it by heart. I saw some of my favorite shops and restaurants, like the Chuckwagon, The Pink Pony, the Lilac tree Hotel Spa ( Which has Mackinac Island´s bookstore, a toy store called Great Turtle Toys, a shoe store called Birkenstocks, and a fudge shop that also has ... • 4. South Secession Dbq The South s Secession from the Union was caused by society pressing the differences rather than synthesizing on our similarities, the fear of emancipation, and Abraham Lincoln succeeding in his candidacy for the 1860 presidential election. All of these factors pushed southerners to conclude leaving the Union would be more beneficial rather than staying. Society focusing on the differences between themselves rather than exploring our similarities is one of the main reasons why the south wanted to secede. Document 1 represents this in a letter from Thomas Jefferson to John Holmes in response to the Missouri compromise which he says Weight the blessings they will throw away, against an abstract principle more likely to be effected by union than ... White has the meaning of purity. Blanche Dubois means white woods but Blanche as a person is nothing like what her name represents, she sleeps around with man and lies to make herself look good. • 6. The Hero Cycle Of Beren And Luthien The Hero Cycle: Beren The Hero Cycle ties together all heros. It is a literary concept that illustrates the same pattern that almost all heros, from Beowulf to Harry Potter, follow. This cycle also connects genres, no matter how different, together in its most basic form. Sci Fi, Fantasy, Mystery, etc. However, the genre most associated to the Hero Cycle is fantasy, partly due to the Hero Cycles origins coming from fairy tale and old myths/epics of ancient days. Even modern fantasy has its stake on the Cycle itself. To share an example, one connected to the founding literary works of modern fantasy, is the Tale of Beren and Luthien. The Tale of Beren and Luthien is one of the chief cornerstones of Tolkien s Legendarium. The main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finrod thanked the human by gifting him his royal ring, pledging an oath to Barahir s family line. Much of Beren s early manhood was fighting alongside these outlaws, being lead by his father until him and his men died, leaving Beren to wander the land alone, barring only the ring of Finrod afterwards. Fighting, war and wandering with father and crew is all that Beren new, but with the lost of his closest kin he was set adrift. The Call of Adventure is the second step within the Hero Cycle and Beren s call is quite the invitation. Wandering aimlessly into the forest Dungortheb, Beren falls entranced to the fairey like, elven princess Luthien, daughter of an elven king and a maia, or demigod. WIth her beauty greatest of all things, Beren was love struck and called for the dancing maiden, naming her Tinuviel as he called for her. She turned to him and it was instant love, though a secret one. She, an immortal, and him, mortal, meant their love could not last and be of error, as well as her royal father not being pleased. This is the closest we get to the Refusal of the Call, being one of few divergences with the Cycle and the story. This is due to the fact that Beren never hesitates to follow any ungodly task to win Luthien s hand in marriage, and is quite literally stated that he felt no hesitation. The fact that their love could not be, and keeping it secret, was the only hesitation displayed throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Hurricanes And Climate Disaster Events 1. Summary Hurricanes and climate disaster events caused losses exceeding $110 billion in damages and 377 deaths across the United States, in the year 2012. This makes the year 2012 the second costliest on record, after the year 2005 which witnessed $160 billion losses due to hurricanes, including hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Sandy was the major driver of substantial damage costs in the year 2012 (approximately $65 billion). During the 1980 2005 period, the United States sustained over $500 billion in overall inflation adjusted damages/costs due to extreme climate events. The analysis of available data shows a significantly increasing trend in billion dollar disasters. The economic impact of hurricanes is huge and there is a need to improve the resiliency and the sustainability of the built environment under extreme wind events, to protect our citizens and to reduce the massive economic losses brought by hurricanes. The purpose of this project is to significantly reduce devastating hurricane effects on infrastructure by implementing solutions to provide strategic guidance on the aerodynamic mitigation of buildings, to help lessen roof suctions, a major source of economic losses and community disruption. In addition, solar panels arranged aerodynamically to reduce both roof suction and panel s loads will be investigated, in an attempt to create safer and greener buildings, as well as to meet stringent wind requirements. • 8. Rhetorical Criticism Of Reagan s Challenger Speech A Rhetorical Criticism of Reagan s Challenger Address Lu Jia This essay will attempt to analyze Ronald Reagan s Challenger address in terms of the rhetorical situation theorized by Dr. Blitzer and elaborated by Dr. Zarefsky in his book Public Speaking. The effectiveness of the Challenger address will be evaluated by carefully identifying and examining each of the four components of the rhetorical situation within the context of this speech. Background On the morning of January 28th, 1986, Americans watched in shock and horror as the space shuttle Challenger exploded only 74 seconds after its launch, killing all seven crew members on board including a high school teacher Christa McAuliffe. Another sub audience who needed more guidance and consolation were the schoolchildren, especially those who witnessed the disaster in person. Reagan briefly changed his tone to that of a grandfather and tried to ease his children s fear by explaining to them sometimes painful things like this happen . He also encouraged them to be brave and carry on with Challenger s legacy by saying the Challenger crew was pulling us into the future, and we ll continue to follow them . Reagan then reassured that the space program would continue to operate and what happened today does nothing to diminish it . This message sought to protect the ongoing space programs and was dedicated to the last sub audience of his speech: the NASA people. In Powaqqatsi when the people are rowing boats in the water, there are two people in the back of the boat that were not rowing. By not rowing the boat they show individualism because they are setting themselves apart from the crowd. Those who are not rowing show less sympathy toward the people they are with. • 16. Conversion of Alcohol to Alkyl Halides Essay Conversion of Alcohols to Alkyl Halides Ankita Patel August 6, 2013 Introduction This lab consisted of the conversion of alcohols into alkyl halides through common substitution methods. These methods include SN1 and SN2 mechanism, both of which can occur for this type of reaction. For both reactions, the first step of protonation will be to add hydrogen to the OH group and then the rest of the reaction will proceed according to the type of mechanism. SN1 reactions form a cation intermediate once the H2O group leaves, then allowing a halide (such as Br) to attack the positively charged reagent1. This reaction went through SN2 mechanism not only because the alcohol was primary but also because there were no rearrangements. If a rearrangement would have occurred, it would have indicated that it was a SN1 mechanism. Further analysis was then done to determine the exact identity of the product and the chemical makeup. B B C C AA B B C C AA Figure 2: NMR Spectrum for 1 propanol The results from the NMR of 1 propanol showed 3 different prominent peaks with the peak at 2.2 cm 1 being the acetone. Because 1 bromopropane has three non equivalent hydrogens it was found to represent this set of NMR data. The other product, 2 bromopropane only had 2 different types of hydrogens and would have only had 2 peaks. Further analysis of the structure of 1 bromopropane showed that the hydrogens closest the bromine group were an indication of peak A in the graph. Because of the electronegativity of the bromine, this peak was located further downfield. There were 2 neighboring hydrogens so using the n+1 rule gave the 3 peaks. Going down peak B showed the next carbon which had 5 neighboring hydrogens thus giving 6 peaks. Finally, the carbon furthest away from the bromine was found at peak C. George Orwell s masterpiece, Animal Farm, replicates a moment in history that will never be forgotten. It is a story that shows courage and tenacity, as well as fear and tragedy. Analysis Of The 17th And 17th Centuries By Ben Jonson Plagiarism in the 17th and 18th Centuries A line that appears on the cover page of Poetaster: A Comical Satyr, written in 1601 by Ben Jonson (1572 1637), the English dramatist and poet, had appeared earlier in Martial s Book VII, Verse 12, an epigram consisting of 99 verses. We know that Jonson used ideas taken from Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso, 43 BCE CE 17), Horace, and Seneca and that his name appears in investigations of plagiarism in English literature. According to one source, Jonson invented the pejorative term playwright in 1687 to describe someone who had put together the work of others. Jonson alluded to the works of Horace and Virgil and to Rome. Jonson wrote that the name Canidia was but a borrowed name and that the ditty was borrowed. The words were Horace s, he stated, Hang him plagiary. This use of the term plagiary appeared in 1601. It referred to someone who forcefully possessed another. It had appeared earlier, in 1555, as plagiaire (French), and, in 1577, as plagium (Latin), translated as a net to entangle game, but was used in English Civil Law when referring to kidnapping or man stealing. It appeared also in July 1607, when Thomas Legge, Master of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, referred to the fact that someone had kidnapped his ideas for a play, The Destruction of Jerusalem. The use of Latin or French was common among the educated and upper classes of that time, many of whom would have been familiar with one or both languages. Alexander Pope ... Thomas Hobbe s Philosophical Political Piece Thomas Hobbe s philosophical political piece The Leviathan argues that society functions most effectively if all state and commonwealth is delegated by an all powerful sovereign, and that without it we are in a state of chaos, otherwise titled by Hobbes as the state of nature (Thomas Hobbes, 2002, p. 181). I will argue that it is not possible to acknowledge what life is like in the state of nature without fully acknowledging that life in the state of nature leads to an all powerful sovereign that ultimately leads to the benefit of the people due to humanity s innate fear of death and desire for civilization. To elaborate, in humanity s most primal state of being, stripped away from all states of authority and government, civilization is in a state of aggressive disarray that is nasty, brutish, and short (Thomas Hobbes, 2002, p. 181). Without the Leviathan, we as humans are primal, aggressive, chaotic, and uncivilized. As a result of this innate reaction of pandemonium in absence of an appointed authority, in order to function effectively as members of society we run into the arms of an all powerful sovereign, which cannot be challenged and therefore has limitless power (Thomas Hobbes, 2002, p. 180, p. 181). It is important to note the Hobbes Leviathan assumes that humans have a biological yearn to be civilized, and a biological yearn to fear death, being the two drives we have to seek civilized refuge in the all powerful sovereign. For an extremely brief time period, I had visions of becoming a figure skating prodigy, but they immediately dissipated as soon as I stepped onto the ice. I couldn t take a step without slipping, but I was terrified of falling. To get to the area of the arena where the class was taking place, I had to hang onto the side of the wall and slowly push myself sideways. How did a civilization erect such impressive statues and why were they erected? And where are the people who erected these statues now? Many of these questions have been explained over the years with circumstantial evidence and preposterous assumptions. However, through careful analysis and meticulous evidence gathering, lead scholars like Joanne Van Tilburg, Jared Diamond, Terry Hunt, and Carl Lipo, have established a comprehensive literature on the history and likely events that happened on Easter Island. Product: Fossil makes watches for Michael Kors and of date the accessory line hasn t been graced by any strong branded company yet Our accessory line will be designed by innovative creators who are destined to obtain brand recognition instead of unknown designers that lack forward sight. Our materials for our new lines will include tribal print and animal print, through extensive research we have conclude that this will be a wave of fashion that if handled correctly will have a staying power that is detrimental in the handbag business. Price: Designer watches of course will be affected by the cost of research and acquisition of a reputable designer but for the brand to be recognized they will have to start creating a slide, ie, a current price is 375$ for a rose gold plated watch. It has been noted that these watches turn colors after limited use. A partnership with Movado will enhance the novelty and the price so expect to be seeing 1000$ being a price for a watch, if only as to secure this market. Handbags also will need an upheaval in price so far. Note, prices in the range of 5000 7500$ for a bag with tribal print and/or animal print

Predictive Validation Paper While it can be difficult to find that there are processes, procedures, and business decisions in place that may not be working as intended, for leaders, analytics are unavoidable as the insights gained add value and drive leaders to make better evidence based people decisions (Hirsch, Sachs Toryfter, 2015). Analytics are used in various business practices including the validation of pre employment assessments. Validation is one of the most essential aspects of any legitimate pre employment assessment program. Predictive validity is established when the scores from a measurement procedure generate accurate predictions about the construct it has been designed to measure. Consider for example a university that is looking to hire 20 faculty members to fill positions within its math and science department from an applicant pool of 125. An assessment is given to identify the most qualified applicants. An optimal study design would use and test predictive validity simultaneously placing the 20 applicants with the best scores in the vacant positions. After 6 months, the hires work performance would be assessed. From there the assessment and work performances (criterion) can be correlated. The result is high reliability and high content validity. Chances for adverse impact are also greatly reduced. This approach also provides verification of job relatedness of the assessment. It is also difficult for applicants to fake job proficiency which ensures a more positive correlation in the relationship between test scores and job performance. The validation of assessments aid managers in gaining an understanding of the market and formulating employer branding. Assessment validation is also the key driver in objectively quantifying test results. Through the use of predictive validation managers are able to confirm that the items included in an assessment accurately represent the constructs being analyzed and that appraisal based on logic and ... • 46. Philadelphia Personal Statement The city of Philadelphia holds a unique and permanent place in my heart. As an African American male, I appreciate opportunities that the city of Philadelphia provided me in contrast to my father s experience up growing in the North Carolina. He attended segregated schools through high school and when he posed the possibility of attending the University of Syracuse for college to his guidance counselor, she told him he was too dark skinned to apply to there. As a result he attended all black institutions for college and law school. While society has changed significantly, I credit the rich and rigorous opportunities the city has provided me. My teachers at Meredith elementary recognized my potential at a young age and pushed me to achieve that potential. Central High School provided me with a public education that allowed me to compete with any student in the country. The University of Pennsylvania developed the critical thinking skills that provided a foundation for my legal education. In addition to the excellent educational opportunities, ... There are three principal factors which affects interpersonal relationship at workplace, I think; tendency of finding a value in working hard, the hidden but strict rule of having worship for the boss, and the subjection of women. I will take up each factor. First of all, I ll describe the effect of Japanese tendency of finding value in working hard. One of the reason is that Japanese are concerned about how they are perceived by the others. I don t know the absolute reason but Japanese tend to be a group oriented. In order not to disrupt the atmosphere at workplace, they pay much attention for their behavior. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here in Japan from right after the war to recent days, since the family style that the man work outside and earn money, and the woman keep their house and educate children had been common, some people still believed that men are good at working and women are not. That causes that men s forcing women to do indirect and supportive work, such as drawing tea, taking a copy or being a acceptance. There are two extreme examples. First, in a meeting on business, a company was suggesting idea to the partner company. At first, a woman of the suggesting company spoke, but the members of partner company didn t hear anything as if to say that suggestion by the woman was indifferent. However, the speaker changed from the woman to another man of the suggesting company, the listeners started to hear keenly with nodding even though he said completely the same thing as her. The other example is the complaint. A man had a complaint with a product, so went to a shop. The shop respond to the problem by appearing a responsible woman at the shop. However, the man didn t know she took in charge of the shop and said the responsible person must appear! . He took it for granted that the responsible person was a man. The Discovery and Observation of the Cosmic Microwave Background: Implications for Cosmology On a spring day in late May in 1964, the future of our understanding of the universe was greatly influenced, arguable on accident. Two radio astronomers discovered something unusual, not with their eyes, but with their ears. Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson essentially heard the buzz that the universe was echoing into their headphones, but they could not wrap their head around what it was. The two scientists were bewildered by the odd humming sound that was picked up by their labs horn antenna and they had no idea the significance of what they were listening to. They thought it must have been some sort of interference from a secondary source in or around their lab and antenna. They did everything in their power to eliminate anything that could possibly interfere with the radio signals that they were receiving; they went as far as getting rid of pigeons that had their nest on top of the astronomer s antenna. It was not until they successfully got rid of anything that could potentially explain this noise that they came to the exciting conclusion that what they stumbled upon must be big. With this knowledge in mind, the idea that something big was at their fingertips, they had a few questions on their mind that needed answering. First and foremost, they obviously wanted and needed to figure out what exactly the noise they were hearing was. Secondly, they wanted to know what exactly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. High School Homework Introduction Traditionally, a high school schedule consists of seven or eight class periods, each one lasting 45 to 50 minutes. Since 1964, when Joliet West High School opened its doors, it has used a traditional seven to eight period school day. 53 years later, problems are starting to arise with how the school day is laid out. Recently, students are becoming more involved in sports, jobs, and extracurricular activities, and the traditional schedule is making it harder for students to keep up with the work from seven different classes. This task is especially difficult for students in honors and AP classes. According to Allie Bidwell, an education reporter for U.S. World and News Report, the average high school students spends about eighteen hours a week on homework. That works out to be about four hours every night. In my experience, I average around two hours of homework every night, still a long time spent on homework. At Joliet West, students are released from school at 3:15; if they go home and start their homework right away, all their homework could be completed by eight o clock. However, a majority of students do not have the luxury of having all night to work on homework. With about half of students participating in a sport, many have practice after school until six o clock. This pushes back their night, so instead of getting done with homework at eight, they will not finish until ten o clock. A large portion of high school students experience this ... In Tim O Brien s confessional writing, Ambush, he creates a flashback and recalls his memory in Vietnam. With detail descriptions, Tim O Brien expresses his guilt towards killing an innocent young man. Furthermore, reinforcing his opposition against war with the writing. In paragraph 2 and 3, Tim O Brien has created a flashback to present his regretful memory of the past. He was involved in the Vietnam War and accidentally killed a young man. The fog is the motif that represents the memory of the author, an expression of guilt and culpability. He was part of the fog The first impression the author has towards the Vietnam soldier. The fog is misty and he cannot see the man clearly. He does t know the man or hasn t seen his face, but he kills the man under stress. It isn t until the dead man dropped to the floor with a star hole in the eyes that the author feels fear and guilt. Although his comrade keeps on comforting him, his culpability left an utterly indelible mark in his mind. In reality, after the war, every time the author thinks or sees a fog, he relates to the war and brings back the painful memory. Fog triggers his memory and hinders his feeling. Furthermore, fog has another hidden meaning, this is a usage of the ambiguity technique. The author is trying to bring out uncertainty with the fog. It s opaque, and may not be seen through. And just like the situation the author is facing, to kill or not to kill, uncertainty rises, it is a dilemma. Tim O Brien is stuck between choices, in doubt whether he should tell the incident to his daughter, whether he should kill the man or not, the contradiction makes him feel unbearably guilty. This is what the author intends to accentuate: war should be discouraged, it is the cause of disaster. The author strongly opposes to war as it only stirs up painful memories and death. ... • 51. Cosmos Plant Hydration Lab Report The graphs and data shows the progression of the Cosmos plant while being hydrated with three different solutions: water, lemon, and baking soda. They all have different pH levels and affect the rate of growth. The quantitative data shows the height of the plants. Based on the data table, the water or neutral pH had the most height, then lemon juice, and lastly the baking soda mixture. The baking soda mixture left the plants dead after the fourteenth day of the experiment. The data shows that each plant grew from 1 2.5 inches everytime they were checked. This can be represented by trial one of water when the sprout grew from 3.5 inches to 5 inches. Based on the qualitative data, the baking soda plants showed little growth and progressively ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Cosmos flower was used to test this. Water has a neutral pH which is generally the best substance for any type of plant to grow and be healthy. However, the Cosmos also grows well when hydrated with a more acidic substance. When hydrated with a substance that is more of abase, it will not grow successfully, which is proven by the data since they died after the third check and became wilted. The hypothesis was not proven because the plants watered with the acidic lemon juice grew more successfully than base substance, which was predicted to keep the plants healthy. The tallest plants that grew was hydrated with water and was 13 inches tall and the shortest living plant was hydrated with the baking soda solution and was 2 inches tall. The control of this experiment was the plant, the Cosmos Bipinnatus because it did not change. The amount of time passed in days was changing, which makes it the independent variable. The dependent variable was the height of the plant, along with its overall health. After composing the procedure, it was observed that the measurements were off, which was an experimental error. The mixture between baking and water was too thick and did not saturate the soil. This could have caused the plants to die more quickly and the pH may not have affected the data as much if it weren t for this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. Advantage And Disadvantage Of Plastic glass fibers which are commonly used in commercial industries. They are E glass and S glass; the E glass has the lowest of all commercially available reinforcing fibers which makes the reason for its widespread use in the industry. The S glass was originally developed for the aircraft components and missile casting; as they have the highest tensile strength of all fibers in use [29]. 3. Carbon fibre reinforced polypropylene When carbon fibers are reinforced with polypropylene composites they provide high impact resistance and rigidity, which makes it favorable to use in automotive and structural engineering. In the recent years more functions such as easy paintability, low coefficient of thermal expansion and scratch resistant property has been a great concern. However the strength and stability of polymer fiber interface determines the final properties of the polypropylene composites. The main advantages of glass fiber reinforced polypropylene composites are high tensile strength, low cost, high chemical resistance and good insulating properties. The disadvantages are high specific gravity, low tensile modulus, high hardness and low fatigue resistance. One of the methods used to improve final properties of the glass fiber polypropylene is by matrix modification. In this method, polar functional groups are introduced to polypropylene chains so as to improve compatibility with polar strengthening and achieve a homogenous dispersion of fillers, reinforcements and additives [37].
