The document outlines the student's initial plans for their final major project (FMP) in video production. They are considering doing a music video, film trailer, or promotional video. They note that a documentary or educational video may not interest them as much. They want to create a series of hyperlapse videos promoting the city of York, focusing on historic landmarks, food, and shopping. The videos will be 20-30 seconds and shared on social media. They provide mood boards and initial storyboards to inspire the project and acknowledge the need to do more location research. Key influences are photographers and videographers Tommy Lundberg, Casey Neistat, and Peter McKinnon and their styles of hyperlapse, quick cuts, and visual
3. Initial Ideas
This is most of the forms of video I would consider for my FMP. They are colour
coded in ones I would do (Green), possibly do (Yellow) and not do (Red)
• I selected a music video, film trailer and promotional video as green because
they would be the best and most realistic to complete in the time we have for
this project. I wouldn’t do another pop song for the music video like last time I
would explore other genres of music. I would do a short trailer for a horror film
as they are the most fun to set up and plan and shoot. I would also consider
doing a promotional video for a city or town as I have a lot of good ideas and
for the most part don’t rely on anybody else.
• I would like to cover an event for my FMP but there are none suitable for a
project of this size coming up before we finish. Also, I don’t think I could get
the most marks from the power points as there is no real planning and pre-pro
for a shoot like this. I also would like to do a short film but they take
exceptional skill to do right and take a lot of time and I don’t think its feasible
in the time we have. I may consider it more next year as my FMP then. I would
also consider doing an advert for an existing product much like the irn-bru
project at the beginning of the year. I would do another food or drink item as
they can be very creative and I have access to them
• I would not do a documentary because they just don’t interest me that much
and I don’t think id put as much effort into it as a I should for the magnitude of
the scale. This is the same as the educational video.
4. Pre-proposal
• Tell me in no more than 30 words your initial thoughts about your FMP? E.g. what would you like to
do, etc…
– I want to create a social idea like hyper lapse advert for the city of York. One will be about the historical landmarks
one about food and things and one about shops and markets. They will be 20 – 30 seconds long and exported as a
vertical video as for Instagram, Facebook and twitter I want them to be the biggest thing on screen as to grab the
audiences attention. The main sharing platforms
• Why have you chosen this as your potential project?
– I have a major interest in both photography and videography, and this Is the best way to explore both mediums
• Who is the project for? Think about the intended audience…basically, what’s the point of it/what is
it’s purpose?
– This project is for the millions of tourists that come to York each year. It is so they can get an idea of what the city is
like and what’s in it
• What about your project makes it personal and important to you?
– I live in York and know some very nice places to use so it is very personal in the aspect
• Describe the tone/mood/style of your potential product[s] [which techniques/characteristics are
you employing?]
– I am going to employ the hyper lapse technique to create an interesting visual interpretation of the city. It will be an
informative but fun tone
• Why have you decided to work in this style/genre?
– I love both photography and videography and want to explore both. I am choosing to make a hyper lapse because
they interest me look very nice when executed properly
7. Mood Board Analysis
How does your mood board inspire your project?
– It shows me what key features I need to include and what the best
angles are. This is because I chose mainly professional photos so I
could re-use the same angle of shots
– It also shows me when the best time to photograph them are that’s
during the day and in the evening for the minster as the lights create a
nice look to it
– It also gave me an idea to shoot along the top of the walls with a wide
angle and then use a telephoto for Clifford's tower as it is surrounded
by roads
How will your mood board influence your final product?
– I am going to use all the locations on the mood bored
– Just looking at the photos they have given me ideas for shots I can use
9. Mood Board Analysis
How does your mood board inspire your project?
– It gave me the idea to use multiple cafes mixed in with the shambles
food market
– Looking at the different styles of pictures and angles in the photos I
have got lots of shot idea for quick edits like Casey (influence 2)
How will your mood board influence your final product?
– It shows me what places I need to shoot
11. Mood Board Analysis
How does your mood board inspire your project?
– It shows me what key features I need to include and what the best angles
are. This is because I chose mainly professional photos so I could re-use
the same angle of shots
– It also shows me when the best time to photograph them are that’s during
the day as the areas are very open and the natural light will work nicely
with the overall aesthetic of the piece.
– The shot of browns in the centre of the page gave me the idea to orbit
around it from a distance to create a slow smooth motion with people
walking quickly around it. This creates an interesting visual and will look
good
How will your mood board influence your final product?
– The low looking up angle of the photos will influence the position of my
camera when doing this particular video. This makes the building look
grander and more intresting
12. Initial Timeline/Storyboard
• I think these initial ideas will
work well once refined.
They mostly flow nicely and
as I want to use fancy
transitions I have thought
about how to move from
block to block for the most
part.
• I need to do some location
research for number 3 as
it’s a bit janky but I think if I
were to go out and do it
now it would be successful.
13. Key Influences
Tommy Lundberg
26 year old photographer
based in Los Angeles, CA.
Lundberg is my main influence as I
love his work and want to emulate
his hyper lapse style of work in my
own videos.
• The way he uses the movement of
the background and the lack of
movement of the characters create
a very interesting visual that would
be fun to explore
• I also like his use transitions as
they usually involve random
objects like lamps and cups
14. Key Influences
Casey’s influence on my work
comes with the quick changes of
perspective to the beat of what
ever music is playing
• I want to use this technique to
add a bit excitement to the
video. This will help keep the
audience interested like Casey
does with b-roll of
airports or cars etc.
Casey Neistat
38 year old videographer
based in New York, NY.
15. Key Influences
Peter McKinnon is another of my
influences as I love his use of
simple but interesting visual effects
in his videos and I want to explore
the use of them in my videos .
• The way he uses seamless
transitions created with masking
and other things like that create
a very interesting visual that
would be fun to explore
• I also like his colour grading in
his b-roll as it gives some depth
to the video and isn’t so plain
looking
Peter McKinnon
33 year old photographer
and videographer based in
Toronto, Canada.
Editor's Notes
6Collection of images related to your product/inspirational/visually interesting
At least 15 needed. These should not just be just existing products. Anything and everything that inspires this project should be here.
Make the theme obvious – make it clear what you’re trying to get across
Use a combination of images sizes – or build around a larger central image
Incorporate text
Look beyond the internet – use books, your own photos, etc
Be a curator – create links between the content, the ‘thread’ will make it easier to understand
Make more than one! If you want to examine different themes or cover different aspects of the possible outcomes of your project, create multiple boards to convey you thoughts and intentions
