2. Task 2: Idea Development and Planning U9 2.1
You could create a mood board of images related to your product. They could be inspirational or visually interesting.
Analyse what you have gathered.
Decide on content and think about how you will structure your piece – consider the conventions of your chosen
style/genre, think about the best methods to appeal to your audience.
Finally work out a production schedule for the project. Once you have a final proposal, begin to plan how you intend to
realise your project and what you will need to create/collect.
Planning will vary depending on if you are doing a web series, podcast or a fanzine.
Web-series: A script, storyboard, organisational docs and clearance forms for your contributors/sources.
Fanzine: Content outline, visual style, pagination, organisational documents.
Podcast: Script, organisational docs, clearance forms for your contributors/sources.
4. ideas for shots/test shots
Here is a few basic shot ideas that I plan on using from locations I've been to before.
Most of these shots will be for background viewing while there is talking over it but there will be a few shots
where it shows something I'm talking about as I plan on having a section showing the destruction of the power
stations with some talking over it I think that footage will have to come from an online source as I wont be able
to video the destruction of one myself
This 1st shot I think will be a
great landscape shot to fill
gaps in talking and to use for
the background while I do
some voiceover.
This shot I think will also be
good for filling gaps between
talking and just as a nice
artistic video shot.
I think this shot will be a great
shot for when I talk about
more of the effects the power
stations are having as its quite
a dramatic shot

• Vintage lens 2: Pentax k 28mm
• Vintage lens 3: Pentax k 50mm to 80mm
• Studio flashes x2

• College computer
7. Structure/storyboard
I plan on breaking up my documentary into 4 parts to make filming and editing easier for my self this will mean I can
keep it structured and not have it all over the place it also means I can plan around the shots I need to get/ footage
Part 1 introduction talking about what the documentary is about and setting it all up
Part 2 discussing facts and what I want to get across
Part 3 interview section with two people discussing their opinions on the structures
Part 4 closing finale to end on about the destruction of the buildings
8. interview planning
I plan on doing my interviews outside with my own lights in my garden I have a nice spot where I think it would
look good for people to stand Infront of to give a nice effect id quite like to have it set up where is dark and have
my big light shining right in front of the subject with my softbot on so it gives this nice effect where its all lit up in
the middle but dark all around ill have to test if this works and looks good before I film it but I think it could look
cool I would also probably have the interview sections in black and white for a stylistic choice.
I'm going to write a short list of conversation starters/interview questions just so can get a basic idea of what I
need to be asking my interviewees so I'm not just making it up on the day of recording because I could miss
something important out that I wanted to talk about or not have enough footage for the full video.
I also plan on interviewing two people for my documentary as I'm trying to get a mixed opinion on my subject
where I want one person who isn’t a fan of the structures and would happily have them gone and for the other
interview have someone who really likes them and has positive things to say about them.
9. Lighting set up plan
For my interviews I plan on setting up my garden into a little scene where I can have a backdrop for people to
talk against for my interview section I have taken this inspiration from a few YouTube videos that negative
feedback has made where the lighting is pretty nice so id like to mimic it in my own way/style.
The set up is having the setting against this huge wall of trees/bushes at the back of my garden and then set up
one big light from my studio lights and shine it straight against the wall but I thought that would be way to harsh
on the subject so I'm going to use my big soft box so that the light is nice and smooth as the harsh lights make
peoples features to defined and sharp for my liking. I believe ill be having the interview section in black and
white but I might toy around and test if colour looks good as well but I think from an artistic choice it will look
better edited.
The lights are going to be set back far away from the subject to try get like a full circle of light around the
subjects and then have nice dark are around them to sort of pen them in to this circle.
10. interview planning part 2:
script/questions
1. Do you think the power stations are a nice addition to the British countryside and if not why
2. What do you think about the effect they’ve had on the landscape and why people want rid of them
3. What do you think of when you first see a PowerStation when driving/traveling out
4. Is there any story's/anecdotes you'd like to share about them or any stories about the involvement of
PowerStation's in your life
5. I think I will also ask about lots of just general thoughts and discussion topics that I can throw in as audio
filler while I show video clips.
11. facilities
• For the editing of my videos ill need to use a computer with adobe software's on luckily I have my own
computer at home that I will do most of my editing on at home as I have the software's I need like
photoshop and premier if and when I'm at college ill be suing their computers and software's which will
also be where I do most of my finishing up of my editing and asking for feedback while I'm in.
• I don’t think I will need any other facilities like the college studio as I plan on doing all my interviewing
at my home with my own studio lights and I've planned everything around not needing the studio on
purpose.
12. Problems I may face and how I will get
around them
There's a slight problem with when I do my interviews as the back of my garden is next to a road that has a fair amount of
traffic coming through it so I'm going to have to record the audio when there's no cars passing by so there's going to have to
be a few cuts in my audio between questions although I am planning on filming it in the evening so it shouldn’t be as big as
a problem as if I had to do it in the morning it would be impossible.
There's a few spots that id like to record for the PowerStation scenes but I have been told off a few times when taking
images around certain spots so I may have to get permissions for certain areas but its not very likely.
I'm having a few issues with what I want to use for music as it will need to be royalty free but I'm not usually a big fan of the
standard royalty free music you find on websites so I'm going to have to do some digging for a good set of audio to use.
There's a small problem which will be easy for me to overcome which is the changing of the seasons and the light being
harder to catch in the evenings as its usually dark by the time I'm back from college so I will be doing all my filming on the
days I have a full day off so I can get it all done with good lighting, id also like most of my shots to be in nice evening sun.
13. locations
• My garden: for my interview sections so I can film using my trees as a backdrop.
• Drax woods: a set of woods facing a power station near my hose which gives some great shots that I plan on
using for my doc.
• Drax PowerStation: I wont be able to actually go in to the PowerStation but you can walk all around the
outside fence of it on this public footpath which I plan on walking through lots to get the footage I might
need.
• Drax sports club: this is a pub/bar across the street from the main location ill be filming and I happen to work
here so I wont need permissions and I can use it to stand in and film across the street at the cooling towers.
• Cambelsforth village: this is a village that has the PowerStation looming over it and id like to get some shots
of the streets where people live down there with the cooling towers towering over their houses.
• Fields in my village: there's a few fields that id like to stand in and take some longshots in

15. Schedule
I have to make a schedule for my project so this is how I will manage my time as a guide for production.
• Filming at home in my garden 2 hours (an hour for each interviewee)
• Going out and shooting landscape shots/ scenery around the PowerStation's 4 hours
• Editing at college using the rest of my time
• I plan on doing lots outside of college hours that wont fit into the 10 hour schedule which is where I plan on chopping
up lots of my clips and getting them ready for editing at college so I'm maximizing my time.
• I'm also going to use some of my free time for collecting shots as when I'm out and about for personal reasons I
always carry my camera in my car so I usually stop off to take video or photos and I could collect a few during
production week that will be usable for my documentary.
