Rationale:
This year I have learnt some new skills in editing and using camera shots such as close ups, long
shots, full body shots, shoulder shots, birds eye shot, and worm eye shot. I created a music video
earlier this year and now I know how to create and edit a music video, before I did not know how to
do this. I used the visual image of the soundwaves to edit the images to the beat of the music.
I used software called “Premiere” for the editing the film. Now, I also know how to use some tools
and effects such as razors, texts, green screen effects, colours and I also know how to download
videos from YouTube.
I did make some mistakes in my editing because I don’t know to use all the tools properly, so going
forward I need to know more details and more uses for these tools. For my Final Major Project I
will create a video and I will learn how to use some more tools. Over two years, I have created four
videos and I have developed to learning new skills in film editing and script editing.
It is very important to me to create subtitles for my work because I am Deaf and I want create a
film that Deaf people can access. I will experiment in using different fonts for subtitles, by using a
website called “DaFont”, this website has hundreds of different styles of fonts.
I will also experiment in adding some colour to the subtitles, I want to make the Deaf audience
attracted to reading it, but I need to make sure the colour isn’t hard to read. For example, in my TV
advert and my music video I used subtitles, for the music video I used red subtitles and for the
advert I used orange subtitles.
This time I will definitely need to use more camera shots because when I created my music video I
didn’t use close any up shots because it meant that the audience wouldn’t have been able to see
my sign language, but this is something I have learnt from, and I know that I need to use close up
shots, so this time I will create my new trailer and I will use close up shots too because horror films
need to show their facial expressions and their facial reactions when the stranger kills them. I will
also use the rest of the camera shots.
From creating my music video and my video advert, I have learnt how to use a camera and tripod
to shoot footage, I will need this when I am creating my trailer. I also directed the video advert,
which I really loved, and that is why I have chosen to create a trailer, so that I can direct again.
Project Concept:
My idea is to create the horror film – so I will be creating a trailer for the horror film. My film will be
about a birthday party, a stranger will come and kill all the people at the party, apart from one.
There will be one person who will survive, they will escape from the murdering stranger and the
stranger will die at the end of film by the hands of the person who survives.
I want to my film to be an improvement on my old video called “The Stranger”, I made this short
film two years ago, but I think it had some mistakes. I want to make my film look better this time
and more professional, I now feel I have more skills to be able to do this. I need to learn how to
create more professional films like movies.
I will create the film with BSL and subtitles, because I am Deaf and I want to share my Deaf
community and my world with the people who will watch my film. I want to prove that Deaf and
hearing people are the same, it can be fair and Deaf people can do all the things that hearing

people can do. Hearing people are welcome to watch my film, and instead of just using BSL, I will
also have subtitles for the hearing people who don’t understand BSL (British Sign Language).
I used this method in my music video, I used BSL, subtitles and I also let the music play in the
background.
My research will help me to imagine my idea more clearly, and possible make changes to some
things that might not work, and it will also give me some more ideas about what will work. I
researched some films and they are similar to my idea. My research of horror films has shown me
that most of the horror films are filmed at night because it is much scarier in the night time when it
is dark. However, I decided not to use the night because I would like to do something different than
other movies.
My idea is to use the daylight because my story is about a birthday party which is linked to
daylight. I will also struggle to film at night because it would mean I can’t use the studio lights due
to college’s rules that don’t allow me to bring the studios light outside of college.
I might also create the script to have some swear words because I know most horror films have
some swearing and I would like to have some swearing, when people swear it shows that they are
scared or angry, it shows emotion.
I will have lots of fake blood because I want the characters to be covered in blood when they are
being killed by the stranger. I want my trailer to have lots of blood and gore in it so that it attracts
people who like horror films.
I will need to use lots of resources for my research, I will need to watch some horror films, and
some horror documentaries, I can also use books and websites for my research.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
I will create development diaries every week to help me evaluate weekly and improve my editing,
filming, research and script editing. Sometimes I will create more than one development diary in a
week. In these diaries, I will talk about what has gone well and what has been a problem, and how
I can stop them from happening again. I will also talk about my strengths and weaknesses and I
hope this will help me keep my work be good quality.
I will watch movies as research because I want to see how existing horror films can improve my
film, like with camera shots and edits. They will also help me to explain some information on the
evaluation and to prove how much I can improve with skills.
Analysing my work regularly will be useful, because I can see any mistakes I have made and I will
be able to improve them and make my trailer look better. I can watch my work through and see if
there is anything that needs changing. I have done this throughout the year will all the videos I
have made. It will also help me make adjustments to the subtitles, for example, if I have spelt
something wrong, or if the colour and shape doesn’t match what is happening on screen. If my
subtitles are dark and the background is also dark, it will make them very hard to read.
I will also complete a final self-reflection. In this evaluation, I will be explaining about how I
researched some existing movies, books, websites and trailers to help me to create my idea.
Evaluation is very important so I can prove my skills of editing and camera shots in the year.
Development diaries will also help me to prove and explain about getting better from the other
videos in this year. I will be able to see how I have improved and what I have learnt.
I feel creating this trailer is very important, because it can help me to create more work that I can
then submit to York Film Festival. It will give me more experience in using a camera, editing and
subtitling, which will help me in my career. When I leave college, I hope to get a job at BBC See
Hear, which is a fantastic programme for Deaf People. At the moment, BBC See Hear doesn’t
have any films or programmes that are really scary and horror, so I want to create that.

Week Tasks to be Completed: Specific Tasks
1 Initial Ideas and Proposal  Use PowerPoint/word software to explain about
who and what influences me to create my film.
 My proposal will be mainly talking about what my
film will be, and some of my ideas.
2 Research  Researching what I need and I want to research.
This might be audience research, primary
research, secondary research etc.
3 Research  Experiments with film. I an experiment in different
locations. I can also experiment with different
lightings such as dark and light. I can use Black
and White to see what it looks like compared to
colourful shots.
 I can also experiment with the different colours
and fonts for my subtitles.
4 Pre-production & Planning  Use storyboard, create a list of shots and create
the script. I will need to carefully plan and think
about each scene and what scenes I am going to
use.
 I might also plan some additional scenes as a
back-up plan in case some of the scenes don’t
work out well.
 I will need to think about where I am going to film,
and who is going to act in my film.
5 Production  Filming my scenes. Some of these I might not
use but I can keep them so that I can reflect on
them and why I didn’t use them when I am writing
my evaluation.
6 Production  Editing my film. This will take a long time; I will
need to choose the best shots and put them
together in Premiere. Some of the shots I will not
use.
 I will also need to edit the subtitles onto my
scenes.
7 Production  Trailer editing – here I will make sure I have
watched some existing trailers so that I can see
how they are created.
 I want my trailer to be exciting and I want the
audience to then want to watch my film so I need
to make sure my trailer is thrilling and scary.
8 Production  DVD box editing. I think I will create a DVD Box
for my film. I will want the box to look scary and
horrific. I might use a dark background with some
blood around. I will use lots of pictures. I can take
screen shots and pictures from my scenes. The
box will also need a blurb about what the film is
about.
9 Evaluation  Explain about what has gone well through the
weeks, and what I have found hard. I know I will

find some things easy and some things difficult
so I will talk about those.
 I will also talk about my strengths and weakness
during filming.
 I want to talk about what it has been like to film
too, and how it has been to work with other
people, sometimes they might not listen or might
not act in the way I want them to.
