3. Research
My main focuses for the research was about Bouts and
various techniques for documentaries. I am happy with
how the techniques research went as I got plenty of
different styles that we could do, test a few out and find
which ones were our favourites. However I couldnât find
very much about Dieric Bouts. As it turns out, little is
known about him which made my research harder, but
after searching through various trustworthy websites, I
managed to get a slide of information. Next time I
would spend some more time finding out information
from different sources rather than just websites. It may
not change anything, but there could have been books
with information about him in and I didnât look for
them. However, once all of our teamâs research came
together it looked very good and we had a large variety
of knowledge.
4. Pre-Production
Our group put a lot of work in pre-production.As we still didnât
have a solid idea for everything, we had to create as many
ideas as we could. In the bottom photo, you can see one of the
smaller ideas that we came up with. This was not one that
ended up on the final night however itâs a good example of the
type of things we were going for. Meanwhile, we wanted to
get a solid idea for my video, which was the public interviews
so we conducted experiments. We did plenty of these and it
really helped a lot going into production, and because of this I
think this Pre-Production was probably the best Iâve ever
done. It has a wide variety of experiments, planning, and
information about what weâre doing. As well as this, over the
course of the PowerPoint you can clearly see how our group is
slowly forming a clear image of our documentaries and the
event itself.
5. Production â Interview video
I really like how my interviews turned out. We conducted
around 17 interviews and used around ten split up into short
little sections, with the full video ending up around three
minutes long. I really liked what I did with the editing as itâs
simple but the cuts work really well, with each interview
complementing one another. If I was to improve on one
thing it would be to use manual focus rather than auto.
Because the camera was set to auto, the video wasnât
completely in focus. It wasnât out of focus but I think it
didnât look as good as it couldâve. Other than that, it turned
out really well. There was a nice balance of opinions and
comedy that created a nice video. I also learnt a lot from
this as I tried setting out Premiere Pro in a new way which
looks much neater and makes everything easier to find.
6. Production âThe night
On the night it was my job to get as much footage as possible for
another video we are currently making for the gallery about the night
directed by Jack and edited by Ollie. I got plenty of footage recording
every different thing we had done as well as all the speeches that were
given on the night. My footage wasnât the best as I am fairly
inexperienced with a shoulder mount, however using editing as well as
the two other cameras we had recording footage the footage came
out looking good, and the short video about the event is nearly done.
Between three of us, we got footage from just about every angle
possible including taking videos from the balcony above.
8. Time management
â I think our time management throughout this project was pretty good.We
had a schedule of meetings given to us by Griselda at the beginning of the
project which we stuck too. I think the structure of having a meeting every
Friday set us up well for each week knowing we needed to have more
development and something to show Griselda when she came in.This meant
that we were always developing and planning, coming up with new ideas and
experimenting which kept us on track. We were well organised and
structured with our approaches to our production and event organisation. By
the day before the event, everything was done and ready which made the
event set up much faster and less stressful.
â I think one problem with our time management was actually down to the
college timetable and getting to the gallery. At the star there was a lot of
guess work as we didnât get to see the space until a few weeks in. as well as
this we didn't get to meet the curator or have communication with some
people working at the gallery therefore delaying production and planning so
some things were rushed and we had less time for production.
9. Initial planning & development
â I think throughout this project we were always really thorough with our planning
considering all elements like cost, audience appeal and how we could make it work.
We were constantly developing our ideas throughout the project which I think
demonstrated a good understanding of what we wanted to create and put across to
our audiences. From the beginning we new we wanted to do an event including video
and animation and quickly came up with the idea of having several videos that would
be shown at the gallery about the exhibition. We took our initial ideas to a meeting
with the marketing and comms team at ymt and they wanted us to develop the ideas
further to create something newer and more fun that wasnât already being done at
the gallery. From here we went back to college and had a mega brainstorm on the
whiteboards and started fro scratch. After a lot of discussion we circled back to
having 3 videos that included our audience, were promotional and informative. From
here we carefully planned our videos individually and began production. All of them
went to plan and the end result was really good and we were all really pleased. I think
we showed our idea development and had clear structured planning to make sure
everything ran smoothly.
â A long side the videos we planned the event. Looking at when would be best, what
else we wanted on the night and how we could advertise it.We chose an date early
on so we had a deadline to work towards which helped when being organised. We
then continued to develop and refine our ideas and kept clear plans throughout so we
all knew what was going on. I think our organisation and planning is what made the
end event so good because every detail had been panned and considered from the
beginning
10. My research
Job role research:
â I found that researching the job roles we had given ourselves really helpful. It gave me a better
understanding of what was my responsibility and gave me a wider perspective especially with the
event co-ordination.There's so many details and little things that I wouldnât of taken into
consideration without research. Personally it was really helpful in making sure I did my part in the
project to the best of my ability. I think it helped in the team knowing everyone had specific roles for
me(holly) being in charge of the event organisation and all the communications meant that when
people had a question they would ask me and I would speak to whoever to find the answer. It also
meant that if needed help with editing something I knew I could go to Ollie or Ewan or if I wanted
some animation for something I could go to will. I think the varied skillset helped a lot in this project. I
did lots of emailing and planning around the production, keeping everyone on schedule and in the
loop. When everyone is working separately it can be hard to make sure you all know where everyone
else is at and how it will all come together so I helped pull everything together. but I wouldnât have
seen it like this without researching what my responsibilities were as project manager and event
coordinator.
Contextual research
â When we started the project, the first step was research, we worked together to gather as much info
on the painting, the gallery and the exhibition. This gave us lots of context and a basic understand of
where we were working, who we were working for and also with the information we had on the art
work, what can we create using this. I think the research on the art work and exhibition was definitely
the most helpful. We used things we found out in our videos and it also mean that at the event, I could
walk round and talk to people and tell them about the art work they were looking at which was a
really nice feeling.
â One thing that looking back now would have been helpful to research is the people working at
ymt,yag and other important people because there was times where we didnât know who we needed
to speak to about certain things or what a person did. Even at the event I met so many people with
important roles at ymt& yag and I wasnât sure who they were or what their role was. It would have
been more comforting and easier when planning, to know who was who and certainly less
embarrassing on the night when I couldât remember who people were when introducing them.
12. Research
â Also for my research I did primary and secondary audience
research. I looked at statistics for different social media platforms
to see which platforms would be best to advertise our event on to
reach our target audience. I also looked at statistics for students on
creative media and arts courses in the UK and the local area so that
I had a rough idea on numbers of people that would be interested in
our event possibly. We also did a survey asking people if theyâd
come to the type of event we were planning and what they would
like to see at that sort of event and how they would like to have
things presented I felt this help a lot and gave us a good idea about
what to make for our target audience.
13. Production
â I was pleased with how my video come out I felt it worked well
and achieved its goals. When it came to filming we had
everything filmed in good time and ready to start editing this
video. I felt editing went smoothly and I knew I would have
everything finished in time. There were a few shots I would
have changed or reshot if possible but besides that I was very
please with the outcome of this video.
Event
â At the event I was helping to film everything that was going on.
I was in charge of organising and directing this video so I came
up with a bit of a shot list for the evening so that everyone
knew what we needed covering but we mostly just filmed
whatever we thought looked best on the night because I was
not one hundred percent sure of what the lay out of the screens
etc. where going to be on the night.
15. Research - Oliver
My section of the research was about the the exhibitions. It was difficult as the only information available
was on the art gallery website so it was difficult to pull research from any other sources. However, there was
a really good amount of information on the gallery website so it was not the end of the world
I also did all the research into documentary post production. This meant I researched editing, sound design,
colour grading and soundtrack creation. I looked at good examples of each process and how they achieved it
successfully.
I feel as if the research was done really well because as a team we covered every base in a lot of detail,
ranging from the artist and the painting to directing and animation
16. Pre-Production
â My Pre-Production is all over the place as we didnât
have long to actually create the script and plan the
video due to time restrictions from the client. I feel
like it could have been done better but I worked
really well for what we needed to do.With more time
I would have included story boards and an editing
breakdown to make it easier when it came to
compiling the footage. The script breakdown was
very useful on the day of shooting as it helped.
â We also conducted production experiments for the
interviews. This helped with the visualisation of the
interviews and how it would look in the edit.
17. Production - Shooting
Overall I think the documentary turned out really nicely and so did the
attendees with one of them stating that they loved the video. There were
defiantly thinks that could have been worked on but overall it looked and
peeled professional.
With the help of the shooting script and the skill of the team, filming the
documentary was pretty easy. We both had a lot of shots to get but we
weren't there for too long. It took half the amount of time to shoot which
was nice
We used the gimbal to get the steady moving shots and the shoulder
mounts to get the close up shots. I pre-set up the gimbal the night before
and photographed the axis measurements as it meant that in the gallery
the set-up only took 5 mins meaning we could get started right away.
There were some shots that were difficult to get due the the lighting in the
gallery being awful, the wall colour being a sort of burgundy red that bleed
into the shots and the restriction on using proper lights as they would
damage the paintings
18. Production - Music
For all the videos except the entrance video I created original music to accompany the
videos. I did this using GarageBand.
For the promo video i used a range of trap kits to get individual drum sounds. They
sounded really good together as they were from the same pack from Splice. I also used
GarageBand loops for the stringed instruments that i pitched down and cut up
For the event video I used a LoFi melody from another sample pack from Splice. I paired
this with a soundscape from from Ethereal that was in the same key. This combination
created a great layered lofi sound that matched the tone of the event and video. For the
drums i used a LoFi one shot pack i found on r/drumkits. It had loads of bass and snare
sounds and really good percussion sounds. However the HiHat sounds were very poor, i
ended up using an EQâd trap hat to emulate the same sort of sound.
For the interviews and the documentary I used a collection of string instrument, piano
sounds and a 80s style synth all layered playing a melody composed by a producer by the
name of Praxi, I worked with those melodies and creating the drums to with it, I used one
of the GarageBand presets to create the drums as they sounded so much better compared
to the Splice kits.
I feel like all the music came out sounding really well and matched the videos well too
19. Production - Editing
I was also tasked with editing the documentary as well. This was a fun job as
i enjoy editing and working in post-production.
We had so much footage that was all unorganised behind belief it was a
nightmare to find the shots I needed. For the next project i will use a proper
system. It was very difficult to find anything as there was just stuff
everywhere
The footage we got didn't need much work to it which was good and saved
a lot of time. It didn't take long to arrange a good enough rough cut to be
sent out for notes. With notes from the team and the Art Gallery i finished
the documentary a few days before the event which gave me time to focus
on other things
The graphics were really easy to implement as Theo from YMT and Will had
cut up all the pictures in photoshop really nicely so creating the fading was
super simple
The voice over was a bit messed up as they were so quiet i had to boost the
sound and then nest the audio and boost again a few times. It didn't effect
the quality that much but was just a pain as we had recorded it in many
sections
The text was pretty easy to do as i had created a photoshop template to
make it easy to create all the different text assets I needed
20. Production - EventVideo Editing
I was given the job of editing all the footage together from the event. This was a pretty difficult job as there was 6 hours worth
of footage and no real story to the video.
It was made worse by the fact that the camera settings weren't properly dialled in before shooting. One camera was very dark,
one had the white balance off so all the footage was orange and the other camera was out of focus for a lot of the shots
However, from all the usable footage I got something good out of it, i think it turned out really well. It flowed nicely and really
fit the overall tone of the event
22. Animation research
â By looking at popular existing works that utilised parallax
animation with very similar images, I was able to learn a lot
about how paintings could be edited to create interesting and
appealing animations. Furthermore, the two pieces I looked at
utilised a comedic tone, which was something we wanted to
use ourselves to appeal towards the young adult age
demographic. The two animations held different purposes in
their own context, with the first being an opening sequence to a
TV show and the other being used as an intermission in a film. I
feel that I did a good job in gathering information from the two
whilst addressing how their different contexts affected the
style in which the were created.
â A way to improve on my research would have been to include
more examples of existing products. This would have made
what I learned more reliable whilst also allowing me to
compare a greater range of styles and animations to gain a
deeper understanding of parallax as a whole. Furthermore, it
would have been good to learn how the animators behind
these specific examples created the animations, as at the time I
was completely new to parallax and so had no experience in
actually creating it, forcing me to quickly learn during the pre-
production period.
23. Production -Working in Photoshop
â It was vital that I began my production work in Photoshop as I would need to cut the images into
separate layers to allow for the animations I would create later. Beginning with St. Luke Drawing the
Virgin andChild, I was able to separate Mary, St Luke and the Baby Jesus into separate layers so that I
could animate each of them individually. Furthermore, I separated Jesus further so that I could
animate each of his limbs on their own, allowing me to create the visual of him flailing his limbs
about. I believe that this worked well to provide myself with a broader range of potential animations
to work with, thus making me able to develop more appealing visuals which keep the viewer
interested.
â Continuing with RemrandtâsStudio, I separated Rembrandt, his canvas, and the audience seen on the
left into separate layers from the background. The lasso tool allowed for smoothly cut outlines whilst
I again used the layer via cut option to separate the selected areas. Finishing with Benaiah, I was able
to use the same method to successfully separate the three figures in the foreground as well as the
clouds in the background. This worked well to set up the use of depth that would occur whilst
animating this image.
â The empty areas behind these cut out areas that I filled in all blend in decently well with the
surrounding image.Whilst you could definitely notice differences between where I added background
and the natural areas if you looked closely, the continuous animations that I would add to these
backgrounds are distracting enough that the audience shouldnât really notice.
â Overall I believe that I was very successful in separating the different parts of each image. For each
painting, I was able to obtain a range of cut-out images that I could later animate, each of which has
been accurately cut around via the lasso tool. Furthermore, the background areas that I filled in all fit
with the rest of the images.
â To improve on this work, I would spend additional time working on the tiles on the ground of the St.
Luke painting, as the confusing perspective resulted in this being a very difficult task with results that I
wasnât too happy with.
24. Production: Shot 1 â st. luke drawing the virgin and
child
â This beginning of this shot has the background spinning into frame
away from the camera, a movement that makes good use of the 3D
space as well as After Effectsâ ability to rotate images along different
axis. This is only further displayed when Mary and St. Luke are
introduced to the shot, with both moving into position as they travel
further from the camera. By having Mary simply slide into position as
Luke spins horizontally, I was able to keep the two movements
different enough that the piece still felt like it had a variety of
different animations. Furthermore, by having Luke rotate along the x-
axis I was able to keep his spinning motion different to the vertical
rotation of the background as it was introduced, thus further ensuring
each movement feels different. Jesus falling into Maryâs arms from
above ensures that an image was introduced to the shot from each
side of the screen, giving the animation a more dynamic feel.
Continuing with Jesus, as previously mentioned I separated each of
his limbs onto separate layers to allow me to animate his arms and
legs flailing. Whilst I did create this animation, the separate layers also
allowed for me to create the unintended animation of each of Jesusâ
body parts falling individually at different rates into Maryâs arms. I
really liked this addition to the animation as it gave the piece a more
comedic feel, something that I wanted to incorporate regardless.
Manipulating the z-coordinates of the background worked well to
create a zoom-in effect, which in turn put more focus on Jesusâ
movements. Furthermore, by having the background move
horizontally across the screen, I was able to prevent the zoom-in
section from seeming to stagnant.
25. Production: Shot 1 â st. luke drawing the virgin and
child
â During this zoom-in, I inserted some text saying âCome join usâ as a
means of encouraging the viewer to come to the event. I end the
shot by setting up the transition that I planned to use to move into
the second shot. This involved a spinning motion of the
background, that I believed worked really well as a means of
counteracting the issue of the two backgrounds of the shots being
different lengths. I made sure to include the spinning background
launching Mary, Luke and Jesus off screen, as this not only played
up the humour, but also worked as a means of having the three
leave the screen in a way that didnât feel abrupt.
â Overall, I am really happy with how this first shot turned out, and
believe it to be my favourite amongst the three that I created. It
utilises dynamic and fun animations to keep the viewer interested
whilst involving each important figure present in the painting.
Furthermore, in regard to the transition at the end, I believe that
then spinning motion works well as a means of counteracting the
size difference of the two aforementioned paintings. By having the
three figures of the St. Luke painting fly off the screen as the
background rotates, I not only maintain a comedic tone for the
piece, but also allow for the three figures to leave the shot in a non-
abrupt way.
â To improve on the shot, I would create more animations involving
the background, such as the studio in the right side of the screen, or
the view through the windows at the back. This would help to make
the environment feel more alive, although I would have to be
careful to not have the screen feel cluttered with animation, as this
could take attention away from the three figures, who act as the
focus on the shot.
26. Production: Shot 2 â Rembrandtâs studio
The first thing seen in this shot is the second half of the transition mentioned in the
evaluation of Shot 1. I was able to create a smooth movement between the two
backgrounds by switching out the images in the middle of background 1âs spinning motion.
As I did so whilst the image was at a 90 degree angle to the screen, the difference in length
between the two backgrounds isnât noticeable to the viewer, and so I was successfully able
to keep the transition looking smooth. The introduction of each person/figure to the shot is
done so in a way that ends with the viewerâs focus on Rembrandt and his canvas, which is
where the next animation takes place. I did this by having the difference figuresâ
introductions be staggered, ending with Rembrandt in the middle of the image. I believe
that this works really well, although I would have liked to have given the people more
interesting/varied animations for their entries to the shot, as they currently all just slide into
frame.
The next piece of animation involving the audience throwing objects at Rembrandt and his
canvas works well to add some more humour to the shot. Furthermore, I believe that the
actual animation of this segment is of good quality, as the impacts causing the canvas to
rock back and forth as well as the falling of the objects after impact give the piece a much
greater sense of realism despite being such small details.
Continuing on, by having Rembrandt and his canvas fall downwards off the screen, I was
able to develop a means of transitioning to the next shot smoothly. I did this by having the
rest of the shot fall down after him, which is then followed by the Benaiah painting rising
from the bottom in the next shot.
Overall, I really like how this shot turned out. My favourite part is definitely the audience
throwing the objects at Rembrandt, as I believe this segment involves the most interesting
and fun animations.
To improve on this shot, I would develop a greater range of animations for the introduction
of the different figures, as previously mentioned. Additionally, I would add some movement
to the people on the right-hand side of the screen, as they are currently completely
stationary, which can be quiet jarring compared to the rest of the image.
27. Shot 3 - benaiah
This shot has more emphasis on the background movements, as seen
with the clouds panning across the screen. I believe this helps to add a
greater sense of depth to the image, making use of the 3D space and
multiple layers. In the foreground are the main focuses of the shot â a
corpse, a warrior, and an injured man. Aside from bringing the corpse
closer to the screen, I didnât do any anything with it, as animating a
corpse that isnât being interacted with isnât really possible. The
separating of the warriorâs arm from his main body that I did during
my work in Photoshop was definitely a good decision, as I was able to
create the swinging motion seen in the video. My thoughts on this
movement are mixed, as whilst I believe it fits with the rest of the shot
really well and helps to set up the upcoming zoom-in, there is a slight
bit of movement between frames which causes the arm to move
position slightly at the shoulder.
The aforementioned zoom-in allowed me to put the focus of the shot
onto the injured manâs face, which I then split apart to create the
visual of the sword slashing the head into two.
Overall I feel that although this is the weakest of the three shots, it still
looks good and has a range of interesting animations present. I like
how the clouds work to give the background a greater sense of
movement whilst not taking attention away from the foreground. To
improve the shot, I would spend more time ensuring that the swinging
arm didnât shake at the shoulder.
29. Research
â In our PowerPoints we worked as a team making slides for for the various
sections of the exhibition such as Dieric Bouts, the portrait of St Luke Drawing
theVirgin and Child and the Exhibitionâs purpose. I think that doing this research
was really helpful as it gave us a lot more insight into what we were working with
in the project as well as helping us to develop some initial ideas as to what we
could do in the project. I researched the painting itself to find out any interesting
information about itâs past and although there wasnât much information that we
could incorporate into our event however it did help us if we were asked
questions about the painting by attendants.
â Before writing our research we had decided on what roles we would be taking so
the group could work on theyâre own mini projects to create a variety of work
that featured all of our strengths. I researched into cinematography and camera
work as these related the most to the role I was given. I found researching
cinematography fairly difficult as I hadnât been in the gallery so I didnât really
have a good understanding of what shots were possible in the exhibition space
so I only looked into some fairly simple style of cinematography.
â I think that the research was a success as we structured it in a way where
everyone got to research what they were interested in without having to worry
about having to little information in theyâre research as we could share
information more easily and learn more about what our group was planning to
make.
30. Production-DocumentaryVideo
â Working on the camera for the documentary video I had
to follow a lot of instructions as Ollie wanted a specific
set of shots to be filmed so we met up and went around
the gallery filming the paintings and each other filming
so that we could document the production. Iâm really
happy with how the documentary turned out, I think that
all the shots look fairly professional and the lighting is
actually ok even though we only had the lighting in the
gallery to work with.
â I actually did the voice over for the documentary video
which was interesting/frustrating to make because I had
to memorize most of the lines so that I could read out
the script in a natural way but I got better at it as I went
on as I was getting into a rhythm of speaking. I think that
the documentary video was really good and if I could
improve it I wouldâve had subtitles in the video so that
people at the event wouldn't need headphones in order
to know what the documentary was about.
31. Production- EventVideo
On the events night Ewan, Jack and I were in charge of filming
the event and making sure that we had all the footage we needed
to make a video that covered the event in itâs entirety. I wanted
to capture the event from various perspectives while Ewan and
Jack focused on specific parts of the event. I would go to the
second floor to film attendants coming in so that there was an
interesting birds-eye view shot of the event. I filmed the
reactions of people to both the artwork being displayed and the
work we had made and this made for some great reaction shots.
Filming in Oliviaâs room made for some good shots as she had a
lot of interactions with people and the interview video in that
room attracted lots of people. I think that filming went really well
as we all filmed different areas of the event at different times so
all our footage captured various moments in the evening through
our individual styles of filming. If I were to film it again I think that
I wouldâve spent some time filming some of the work being
shown in the event as I mainly filmed people so it wouldâve been
nice to film what was on display.
32. Production- Event night
â The event night went really well, we
had lotâs of students show up so our
advertising was a success. I think that
because we had a variety of things that
people could do so in the two hours
that the event was happening for there
was always something to do or
something that would happen such as
the curatorâs speech or Chris Cooks talk.
Because I spent the night filming I got a
good look at how everyone was during
the event everyone seemed to be
having a good time.
36. There isnât really much to talk about in this feedback as all of it was
so positive. People clearly liked the event and thought it went well.
The only bit of constructive criticism we received was to increase
the sound in one of the rooms, but thatâs not something we can fix
now. People seemed to focus more on the interactive elements so
if we were to do anything like this again then weâd focus on that.
In conclusion, I think the night went well.We had very few issues
and when we did run into a problem it was solved quickly. For
example, one of theTVs went down just before the event started,
and it only took a minute to get it back up and running.
