2. “IN SUBURBIA”
FADE IN:
INT. LOCATION #4: HOUSE – DAY
VIOLET stares past the camera, frozen solid but still managing to
shake. She is wearing all black, just a simple jeans and shirt. She
appears terrified and the fear can be seen in her eyes, she knows
someone is behind her.
Camera focuses behind her which reveals a man standing there, THE
NEIGHBOUR, head just out of shot. He appears to be wearing generic
clothes. Just a blue hoodie, blue jeans, and Vans.
FADES TO BLACK
Montage of Violet waking up, sipping tea, leaving her house, walking
around the corner, then stopping at the house. It looks completely
normal in every way, a semi-detached house with a white door and golden
handle. Each time she looks to see the neighbour waving, repeat 4
times, each time she’s wearing different clothes and stopping at the
house for longer. She has a series of photos of herself and friends
behind her when she wakes up, however one of them appears to be the
neighbour.
FADE IN:
EXT. LOCATION 2: STREET – DAY
Violet is walking around the corner of the path. The neighbour is
walking a dog behind her yet she doesn’t notice.
VIOLET (V.O)
Nothing interesting happens here anymore.
I left school; it was shit. Now I just wander
around, not really doing anything, because nothing
ever happens.
Violet stops in front of the house, looking at it for longer than she
has done before. She looks over to see the neighbour waving, starting
another montage that is the same as the previous one.
EXT. LOCATION 4: HOUSE – DAY
Violet stops in front of the house, she turns to look at it, frowning.
VIOLET (V.O)
If something were to happen, it would definitely
be with this house. There’s something just… off
about it. Maybe it’s just my mind trying to make
this place interesting, but it just feels weird.
The neighbour peeks through the window, and gives a big smile and wave,
however Violet has already started moving on, and hasn’t seen it.
3. VIOLET (V.O)
There’s definitely something wrong with him.
Looks like he’s probably on a register or
growing weed in his roof or something.
As she walks, the neighbour is in the background, standing there
lifelessly.
VIOLET (V.O)
That place is in my mind more than I care to
admit. It’s completely normal in every way
yet it stands out so much. I reckon thinking
about what could be wrong with it is the
only thing keeping me sane here. If I didn’t
I’d probably be a mindless zombie like everyone
else here. Except younger, and with an ability
to walk without help from a stick or carer.
EXT. LOCATION #3: FOREST – DAY
VIOLET walks through the woods, looking visibly more at peace
VIOLET (V.O)
The forest here is nice. It’s the only way
I can be alone with my thoughts, without
weird zombie people staring at me. This place
just makes me feel less trapped.
Violet sees the neighbour who waves at her with a smile. As this
happens the camera moves past a tree to reveal that he has gone, and
Violet has changed clothing once again.
EXT. LOCATION #3: FOREST – DAY
VIOLET (V.O)
However nice it may be, I still couldn’t spend
More than a couple of hours here. Mum says I
get bored easily, but she doesn’t realise that
everything is just fucking miserable.
She walks to the edge of the forest to leave.
EXT. LOCATION #1: STREET – DAY
Violet is returning from the woods. She turns to the house expecting to
see the neighbour; however, no one is there. The front door appears to
be open slightly.
VIOLET (V.O)
I don’t know how long I can take all this anymore
Every day I’m doing the same thing, it felt
Freeing but now I’m trapped in this weird cycle
and I feel less free than before, maybe this
4. is why people tell you to stay in school.
She starts walking towards the house, and slowly pushes open the door,
her hand trembling. She touches her neck as if it were cold.
INT. LOCATION #4: HOUSE – DAY
She slowly sticks her head around the door, taking in her surroundings.
It opens slowly and she walks through the hallway, brushing her hand
against the wall as she walks, to see various photos of her. As she
moves further into the house, the pictures of her become scratched. She
takes out one of the photos from the frame and turns it around. The
words “Miss you every day” are written on the back. Violet is almost
crying; a single tear falls onto the writing.
She walks into a living room, that appears to be normal in every way.
As nervously, she looks behind her, then continues moving. Once she’s
in, she freezes. A man appears behind her, now Violet is shaking.
VIOLET
I’m sorry
Violet is still looking straight forward; she doesn’t want to look
behind her. The neighbour slowly walks towards her, saying nothing.
VIOLET
It was an accident; it won’t happen again
I promise.
She slowly turns around to see him standing right behind her, and she
slowly looks up. She crawls underneath the neighbour’s legs to try and
get away, only to be pulled back. As she’s pulled back, everything
we’ve seen in a montage is flashed in front of the audience, this
includes what we’ve seen before, the forest with the neighbour, the
words on the photograph, and finally a brief view of police lights.
This is all finished with her sitting on the edge of her bed, crying
and staring off into space. She’s breathing heavily. The repetition has
begun again.
