What is iBeacon ?
• iBeacon is a new technology created by Apple to
enhance location services for mobile devices.
• In general the word Beacon means signal fire.
• It works based on Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE).
What is BLE?
• Bluetooth Low Energy is a wireless personal area
network technology used for transmitting data over
short distances.
• It is designed for low energy consumption and cost
when compared to its predecessor.
Working of Beacon
• BLE communication comprises of small packets of
data which are broadcast at regular intervals
through radiowaves.
• These packets of data can then be picked up by
smart devices nearby.
Broadcast signals
• Universally Unique Identifier(UUID): used to
identify the owner of a group of beacons.
(for ex the brand of chain of stores)
• Major: a number often used to identify a location.
(for ex a specific store)
• Minor: a number often used to identify a micro-
location(for ex a door,floor,department,aisle)
• Cloud: an app queries a cloud based platform with
the UUID, major and minor to get the detailed
location data returned
• Cloud Secure: the beacon data is fully encrypted
and can only be decrypted by the cloud platform,
which returns to the app detailed location data
Types of Beacons
• Estimote
• Kontakt
• Coin
Applications
• Hospitality
• Retail
• Education
• Health care
• Transportation
Uses of BeaconsUses
Devices supporting Beacons
• Apple- ipad , iphone
• Google-Nexus 5,Nexus 4
• BlackBerry-Q10,Z10
• Samsung-Galaxy Series
• Sony- Xperia Series
• Microsoft-Surface
Future Enhancements
Automatic tollbooths:
Finding lost persons:
Advantages
• Beacons are affordable and simple to implement.
• These are easy scalable devices.
• Beacons are creating a new content platform on
which brands and consumers can interact in a
physical space.
Disadvantages
• The fear of burdening consumers with a tidal wave
of unwanted notifications is a genuine concern.
• Range of Beacons is very less i.e. 100-150mts
Conclusion
• Shopping habits and consumer expectations are
changing quickly, so in order to reach their needs
iBeacon was created.
• It’s aim is to provide location based services based on
proximity.
• iBeacon connects Physical world with Digital world.
Thank you
