Analysis Of The Article Notes On A Politics Of Location...
In Adrienne Rich s article Notes towards a Politics of Location, Rich argues that positionality is a way
of understanding how power and privilege affect perspective. I am in agreement with Rich that
recognizing one s own politics of location is a useful starting point for feminist theory. Rich s main
arguments are that the US education system failed to provide an adequate retelling of world histories,
that white feminism is ignorant of its privileges, and that through the awareness and inclusion of racial
movements can feminist theory grow. I will also compare Rich s article to Simone de Beauvoir s first
chapter, Biological Data from her book The Second Sex, and to Judith Butler s article Performative
Acts and Gender Constitution: An Essay in Phenomenology and Feminist Theory. Lastly, I will
explain how Rich s article is valuable to myself, to the WOMN 2000 Feminist Thought course, and in
broader social contexts. Rich effectively argues that white feminism recreates the power structures
feminism seeks to disassemble.
Rich maintains that white feminism begins with the faulty US education system, or for this paper s
purposes, the North American education system. Rich (1984) contends that Any United States citizen
alive today has been saturated with...the warning that any collective restructuring of society spells the
end of personal freedom....But we are not invited to consider the butcheries...of white supremacism (p.
220). The lack of perspective for North Americans

Franklin Chang Diaz s Vaskimar Rocket
Franklin Chang Diaz s VASIMR rocket could cut a trip to Mars from 6 months to 39 days. Diaz
created improved versions of VASIMR. He created, imagined, and innovated to overcome challenges.
He also illuminated by changing the world s view on rocket engines and by improving Latin America
s technology.
Franklin Chang Diaz created improved versions of the Variable Specific Magnetoplasma
Rocket(VASIMR). The VASIMR rocket engine turns argon, xenon, or hydrogen into superheated
plasma. It does this by first ionizing it, knocking an electron loose from each gas atom with a Helicon
coupler. Then, using an Ion Cyclotron Heating (ICH) coupler, it heats plasma to temperatures at about
the temperature in the Sun s core(9,999,726.85℃). The ICH coupler

Section: 5
Objective: What is the proper way to use a compound microscope and prepare a wet mount slide?
Hypothesis: A compound microscope is being used properly when the light source, nosepiece lens,

For the medium power objective, the objective magnification was 10x, the eyepiece magnification was
10x, and the total magnification was 100x. For the high power objective, the objective magnification
was 43x, the eyepiece magnification was 10x, and the total magnification was 430x. Based on these
observations taken, total magnification increases as both the objective and eyepiece magnifications
increase.
While placed on the slide of the microscope, the letter e is right side up. When viewed through the
microscope, the e rotates and is upside down. (AAC #3)
When observing an ant through a microscope, the movements are opposite to what is observed not
through the microscope. An ant moving toward the bottom of the slide and turning right under a
microscope is actually moving toward the top of the slide and toward the left not under the
microscope. (AAC #4)

Similarities Between An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge...
The Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, by Ambrose Bierce tells the story of a man being punished for a
crime. While he is dying, he vividly imagines his escape, the one thing that urges him on is the
thought of his family. White Heron, by Sarah Orne Jewett follows a girl named Sylvia who lives in a
small country home with her grandmother. She has a simple life: walking with her cow and hanging
out with the forest creatures. However, when a young hunter arrives on the scene with a very alluring
offer, Sylvia is faced with a tough decision. The setting of the short story, An Occurrence at Owl
Creek Bridge , is in northern Alabama during the Civil War. The short story, A White Heron , takes
place in New England during the summer on a farm. Throughout the short stories both Jewett and
Bierce, describe the similar scenes a pond, a forest, and a faint sunlight.
One similarity between the short stories is both take place by some sort of water. Peyton was near a
stream when he was shot and decided to tried another method of escaping. The humming of the gnats
that danced above the eddies of the stream, the beating of the dragon flies wings, the strokes of the
water spiders legs, like oars which had lifted their boat all these made audible music. A fish slid along
beneath his eyes, and he heard the rush of its body parting the water (Bierce 1505). This quote
describes a stream that was nearby Peyton. It describes a stream of water and the organisms that are
surrounding the stream. Sylvia theory was that if a person climbed the tallest tree in the forest they
would see the ocean. While on the hunt for the White Heron s nesting spot, she climbed the tallest
tree. Sylvia s faced was like a pale star, if one had seen it from the ground, when the last thorny bough
was past, and she stood trembling and tires but wholly triumphant, high in the tree top. Yes, there was
the sea with the dawning sun making a golden dazzle over it, and toward that glorious east flew two
hawks with slow moving pinions (Jewett 1602). This quote shows that Sylvia s view is coming from
the treetop; and she sees the sea and two hawks. At some point in the story, both characters were near
a type of water; Peyton was by a stream and Sylvia was

New Public Management Model For The Nonprofit Agency,...
New Public Management and the Role of Nonprofit Organizations: Cultivating the Public Sector
The purpose of this paper is to apply the new public management model to the nonprofit agency,
Hands Across the World. First, an overview of the new public management model is provided.
Second, a brief description of the nonprofit organization, Hands Across the World is provided. Third,
the new public management model is applied to Hands Across the World.
New Public Management Today the new public management (NPM) model is the leading worldview
in the public sector. The political climate and ideology during the 1970s and 1980s served as an
impetus to migrate away from the old public administration approach and implement new policies and
procedures that would be of better service to the public interest and collective good as well as restore
trust and value in the bureaucratic process. Thus, during the mid 1990s, the new public management
worldview was realized to apply common practices used in the private sector to the public sector. The
goal of this approach was to achieve the same level of efficiency found in the private sector and
remove some of the redundancy, lack of transparency, and lack of accountability in bureaucratic
government to better serve the public interest. David Osborne and Ted Gaebler s Reinventing
Government (1992) served as a catalytic novel in the progression of implementing private practices in
the public sector. Under the NPM framework public administrators

Examples Of Fatal Flaws In The Once And Future King
The Fatal Flaws of Characters in the Arthurian Legend
Many characters in stories have one fatal flaw that can eventually lead to his or her downfall. In The
Once and Future King by T.H. White and The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, the love
triangle between King Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot is revealed. Guinevere is married to Arthur,
but she has feelings for Lancelot who is Arthurs most trusted knight. Each of these three characters
have characteristics that could be their fatal flaw. The fatal flaws of King Arthur, Guinevere, and
Lancelot all contribute in one way or another, to Arthur s downfall.
Arthur s fatal flaw is outlined in his early years of growing up, in Book One of The Once and Future
King. His parents leave him so he is adopted by Sir Ector who also happens ... Show more content on

Christopher Colombus Letter
This letter was written by Christopher Colombus around 1494. Its contents consist of rules or laws that
would be established for the Island of Espanola, and other islands that would be discovered in the
future. This letter has 13 rules, most of them dealing with wealth and the discovery of gold. It starts
off by stating the amount of colonist that would like to go to this new island, due to the benefits of
trade, farming, and safety. But with this amount of people there has to be order and proper
organization and so every colonist has to become a citizen of a one of the four towns. Afterwards,
there are rules for the amount of gold one is able to collect, how much they would be taxed, and who
will collect this tax. Some of the money would go to the king and queen of Spain while a certain
percentage would go to the building and maintenance churches and the people working there. The
purpose of this letter is to establish an infrastructure for the success of the towns in these discovered
islands, and to convince the king and queen to invest resources and time into Columbus s purpose as

part of the prize which would ultimately bring him fame. Throughout the letter Columbus is hopeful

Celebration Of Nations Essay
Celebration of nations is a festival that goes on every year in Rolla Missouri. This event involves a
parade with flags representing more than 80 nations. This is an all day event. It celebrates different
cultures and the whole community gets involved. The university, Missouri S T is this host of this
event. At the end of the parade there is always an announcer that explains the main purpose for the
festival and welcomes each flag. They do this festival because several students from different nations
attend the university. With this being a college town, this gives the community an opportunity to get
involved and notice the students representing a different nation. Getting involved in the Celebration of
Nations event is not only easy, but also very rewarding. Whether you are an American or international
student, a member of the faculty or staff at S T, or a resident of the larger Rolla community, everyone
is welcome to join the festivities (Missouri S T). This event is free. The community gets to listen to
different types of music from different live band and hear different instruments. They also have the
chance to try different foods and learn about different cultures. There are always authentic displays
too. You ll also find beautiful and affordable crafts and delicious international treats, meals and drinks
you can buy (Missouri S T, p.2). Families are able to bring their passports and get them stamped for

Database Vs. Relational Database Model
One size fits all. The developers go to for all data. You need only a relational database. This is the
false assumption that you will see when it comes to database models. The relational database model is
great for data that normally can fit into a table, or shows relationships between data, but not all data
falls into that category. There are a few options for these situations. You can use an object oriented
database, a hierarchical database, a network database, and a flat file database. The first alternative is
known as the object oriented. In a document oriented database model, each individual record, and all
of the data associated with that record, is thought of as a document. In this type of database,
everything that is related to a database object, or document, is grouped together. This keeps the
database organized, and easier to find things that are related to each other. Each document is encoding
data in some format or encoding. The most common formats include XML, JSON and BSON. These
are just some of the formats available, but these seem to be the most popular formats that are being
used.
A document can have single, or even multiple fields. These fields can vary from document to
document, which gives each document a lot of flexibility. There is no need to worry about constraints,
like we see in our relational database, but validation documents can be made to enforce rules as
needed. This type of database can typically accept multiple languages, instead of just

The Importance Of Online Shopping
Downsizing, bankruptcy, and closure are words plaguing the retail industry. Large retail chains are
being forced out of business because of the newfound popularity of online shopping. Jack Snyder has
a first hand relationship with these words. As an electronics sales manager for Sears in a small town
mall, Jack was forced out of his job when his store closed. After many successful years with the
company, it came as a shock to him to not only lose his store and job but to not be offered something
else within the company. Although he isn t a real person, Jack s situation has become increasingly
prevalent across the world in the last several years to actual retail workers. Due to their popularity,
online shopping giants will lead to the demise of traditional retail stores and ultimately cause an
economic disaster.
The problem started becoming increasingly important when online retailers like Amazon made their
way into the lives of many consumers. As more people became proficient with technology and the
internet, the popularity of online shopping increased. Online shopping giants like Amazon and eBay
are destroying the economy by enticing shoppers to spend their money online, rather than at an actual
retail store. The problem has deep roots in people s desire to be informed before making purchases. As
seen in the article, Bricks or Clicks, 44 percent of consumers do some type of research about a product
before purchasing it in a store (Sunil, 2013). Much of this

The Long Road Of Gettysburg
The Long Road To Gettysburg Jim Murphy wrote a book called the Long Road To Gettysburg. It is a

and General Meade for the North. Other minor characters include General Joseph Hooker of the North
and General John Dooley of the South. This book teaches you the Horrors of Gettysburg. The theme is
violence is never the answer. In the beginning it all started with an idea that Robert E lee proposed. It
stated that they spring a surprise attack in Pennsylvania. Everybody agreed to this idea because all the
battles before had happened on southern soil. So, they started marching.THey marched about 10 miles

found out about the planned attack and began to march towards the South. They eventually met up in a
small farm town in Pennsylvania called Gettysburg. This would later be the same soil in which 40,000
Americans lay wounded or dead. Little did they know this would be the bloodiest battle in American
history. After that, they commenced in an intense battle. They fought in many places such as Cemetery

Hitler Appeasement Research Paper
Appeasement was thought to be a way of keeping Germany at bay, however, it was proven to be an
ineffective policy as subsequently, war broke out in 1939. Appeasement was a major contributor to
World War 2 as it allowed Hitler to build his military power until it was strong enough to fight a world
scale war. In addition, appeasement emboldened Germany, as the allies never wanted to succumb to
yet another war. Hitler was aware that the appeasement policy was a massive compromise to Hitler,
and in someways a plead not to begin another war. Hitler used this leverage to his advantage, taking
steps that eventually led to the most devastating war of our time.

The social distress saw many protests, fights and rallies in the mid to late 30 s. An anarchist
government was also formed at one stage. Franco saw Nazi Germany as a superpower awaiting to flex
its muscles and wanted the Germans on their side. Using many tactics seen by Mussolini and Hitler,
Franco empowered the nation by simmering the large divide within the country. His fascist ideology
made him come across as a nationalistic and empowering leader, much like the other two Fascist
governments residing in Europe. The Spanish Civil War of 1936 1939 was an armed conflict between
left wing Republicans and far right Fascist Nationalists, led by Francisco Franco. The Republicans
were in alliance with the Anarchists, Communists and Second Spanish Republic while the Nationalists
had the support of the Falangist, Carlist Catholic s, all led by Franco. Franco was fighting for the
overthrowing of the left wing government, the Second Spanish Republic and the establishment of a
military dictatorship. The war is commonly referred a fight between democracy and fascism. In
September of 1936, an intervention pact was signed by 27 countries. This pact meant that once signed,
none of these countries will provide any assistance to either side. Among the 27 countries were
Britain, France, the Soviet Union, Germany and Italy. However soon after the pact, many of these
countries began to provide an international element to the war. The Communist Soviets provided
military assistance to the Republicans, along with Mexico. The Nationalists also had the assistance of
international countries, the biggest being Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. The war ended in a
Nationalist victory. Franco established a Fascist Militaristic Dictatorship Government in

Nurse Driven, Sleep Hygiene Protocol, A Source Of Anxiety...
The inability to sleep is a source of anxiety and stress for patients in the intensive care unit (ICU); this
inability can lead to cardiorespiratory disturbances, immune system dysfunction, impaired wound
healing, hormonal and metabolic imbalances, cognitive changes, and delirium. Through the use of
quiet times and nursing actions that encourage sleep, or, sleep hygiene bundles, nurses can assist in
improving sleep quality in the ICU. These bundles include noise and light reduction, scheduling
routine procedures outside of reserved sleep times, the use of earplugs and eye masks, and the
grouping of nursing care activities to minimize sleep interruptions. The aim of this proposal, therefore,
will be to implement a nurse driven, sleep hygiene protocol, in order to improve patient care by
promoting quality sleep in ICU patients. Barriers to implementation include staff resistance to the
concept, concerns regarding patient care during sleep times and difficulties in coordinating care with
other units. Studies used to gather information for this proposal were published between the years of
2011 and 2016 and were found in several databases: Academic Search Complete, Medline, and OVID
Journals.

Persuasive Essay On The Nuclear Bomb
With World War II escalating, the United States agreed to use the world s first nuclear bomb to end the
chaos. Tensions were rising as the western hemisphere finally unraveled the gruesome techniques
Hitler practiced on Jews. As Schweitzer concluded, Hitler and the Nazis replaced the organismic
theory of states with the racial theory of peoples (Schweitzer 61). To prevent more abuse from
happening with Hitler in charge, the United States decided to take action. After Pearl Harbor, the
Japanese, who are allies with Germany, were seen as the major threat to the United States.
Imprisonment were placed on the Japanese as a way to monitor and prevent Japanese influenced
attacks. These actions were brought upon by President Franklin D. Roosevelt shortly after Peal
Harbor. As an act to end the war and to get revenge on Pearl Harbor, the United States attacked Japan
on August 6th, 1945. Hiroshima was the first target because it had been untouched during the United
State s Air Force bombing raids and was a vulnerable military base for the bomb to be tested. On a
quiet Monday morning at 8:15 a.m., the nuclear bomb often recalled as the little boy was dropped on
western Japan. Young estimated that about 68,000 people died and 72,000 were wounded making
World War II one of the bloodiest war in history (Young 14). Taking over 140,000 lives at Hiroshima,
the first nuclear bomb proved to be devastating; three days later Nagasaki gets shattered with a nuclear

Autism Is A Genetic Disorder
Although autism has spread globally, scientists continue conducting research to identify the precise
causes. More specifically, they are zeroing in on genetic mutations, brain chemistry abnormalities, and
maternal factors. One possible cause that can lead to autism is genetic mutations. First of all, families
studies indicate that children can affected by autism through heredity. It is true that children inherited
some characteristics from their parents. This is because a chromosome of a child produced by one
chromosome father and the other one from mother, which formed as DNA. As a matter of fact, if
parents have some genetic disease, they can pass it to the offspring through DNA. In same way,
because autism is a genetic disorder, it can pass down generation. In fact, according to Cowley (2000),
the prevalence of having autistic child is 5% of family who already has this disorder, which means
around 25 times the normal average. Clearly, inheriting autism through families result in increasing
the number of autistic children in the population. Another evidence shows that autism can caused by
inheriting genetic disorder is through conducting twins studies. There are two types of twins. First one
is identical twins, which formed by splitting one fertilized egg and then developed in two babies.
Therefore, they are sharing the same genetic codes. However, this different from fraternal twins who
do not share the same genetic information because they are formed by two

World Myhtology The Golden Guide Analysis
To me, this passage just emphasizes the point that we all have distinctive outlooks on things. There is
a Spanish proverb that my mom used to say to me that reminds me of that Cada Cabeza es un mundo (
each mind is a world unto itself). Therefore, just because we see something in a particular way, does
not mean that everyone else see it in the same way. To illustrate, recently I went to the Metropolitan
Art museum with my friend, we walked all over, but I stop and admire a beautiful abstract painting of

Theories Surrounding The Development Of One s Gender Identity

Lawrence Kohlberg developed the Cognitive Developmental Theory, a three stage theory that suggests

he or she is male or female by age 3 but they fail to recognize that gender is stable and constant

Fingerprints And Fingerprints Of Fingerprints
As humans, we each contain our own unique fingerprints. Our fingerprints are so remarkably
distinctive that even identical twins do not share the same fingerprints . Because the palm surfaces of
our hands and feet retain the same constant ridges throughout our lifetimes, customary methods of
fingerprinting were able to exploit this for purposes of identification. Under the context of forensic
science, there are various types of fingerprints: impression, patent, and latent . An impression
fingerprint is what would be found if someone pressed his or her thumb down in clay for instance. It
creates a mold of sorts. A patent fingerprints are typically found on surfaces and can be visibly seen.
For example, window fingerprints or fingerprints ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The origin of fingerprint identification dates back to the late 19th century when groundbreaking
research on fingerprints was first published in the British scientific journal. Shortly after, Sir Galton
would make the popular fingerprint categorizations of arches, loops, and whorls. Fueled with this new
research, police agencies in London and Argentina began utilizing fingerprints as tools for
identification within their departments . In 1906, Captain Joseph A. Faurot of the New York City
police department was one of the first proponents to promote fingerprints for the purpose of criminal
investigation in the United States. In 1924, the Federal Bureau of Investigation began to formulate the
first fingerprint databases. This was essential to the viability of fingerprint identification as it served as
a catalyst for the databases we use today.
Today, the dominant framework used by fingerprint experts is the ACE V, short for analysis,
comparison, evaluation, and verification . Although the ACE V frame was developed and fingerprint
identification has been exercised for years, the validity of finger printing as a tool of identification
remains questionable. To understand this lack of certainty, we can delve into two clear opposing
opinions regarding fingerprint identification. Many in the academic

The Importance Of Working At The Post Office
Working at the Post Office is no walk in the park. In fact, this job requires excess amounts of
strenuous activity as well as the ability to multitask, time manage, and problem solve. While it may
seem emotionally draining for some, there is one man who makes it all look simple, and that man goes
by the name of Eric Olszewski. As 5:30 a.m. strikes the clock, most of America is still snoozing
except for me. I am sorting mail at the Post Office. As the sun still sleeps, I spend my time loathing in
silence while scanning incoming parcels to be sorted to their designated routes. The day seems to be
dull. When I am about finished with scanning, my eyes meet the clock. It is around 7:00 a.m., and the
sun is starting to wake up. Just then, I hear the creaking sound of the double doors swinging open.
Before I see him, I can feel his presence. My eyes gaze to the opening doors, and then I see him. He is
striding in with his long, stringy, sun kissed hair flowing as the wind hits it. He is geared in the postal
blues and ready to seize the day. With eyes still heavy with sandbags, he says in his rugged, southern
accent, good morning, Kristen. How are you? I notice his crooked smile just below his blonde
mustache and matching goatee. It is contagious. I adjust my posture, smile and reply, good morning,
Eric. I m fine, and you? He lets me know that he is doing great as well, and as I continue my work, I
truly feel as if it will be a great day. What most people do not know about Eric is that he is not the type
of guy to say good morning and then exclude himself to the world. In fact, I noticed this feature about
him as I was struggling one day at work. Walking around to each mail carrier s case, I began picking
up some empty tubs. However, I was struggling as the tubs started to escape my grip. Just then, I hear
a muffled chuckle. I look up and see Eric; he had paused his work to focus on me. He then begins to
walk towards me and says playfully, Here. Let me show you an easier way to do that. I then watched
as Eric gracefully carried the tubs to their holders, and I listened as he told me how to hold them in a
way that would make them easier to carry. I thanked him, to which he replied, anytime , with a wink

Similarities Between Blurred Lines And Marvin Gaye
Blurred Lines and Marvin Gaye In 2013, the song Blurred Lines was released by Robin Thicke. The
song was a huge number one hit in America. However, many individuals felt that Blurred Lines eerily
resembled the song Got to Give it Up by Marvin Gaye. The similarities between the two songs
eventually brought about a lawsuit amongst Robin Thicke, along with Pharrell Williams, and Marvin
Gaye s family. When the case was taken to court, the jury determined that Robin Thicke and Pharrell
Williams had in fact committed an act of plagiarism. The case granted Marvin Gaye s children a large
sum of cash due to the money earned from Blurred Lines , and the artists associated with the song,

Generosity And Values Of The Epic Of Beowulf
The Anglo Saxons were a people who lived in England during the fifth century. They strongly
believed in fate and valued traits such as courage, generosity, faithfulness and, most importantly,
strength. This is shown through the many epic poems that were composed and performed by the Anglo
Saxons during this time period. One of the most well known epics Beowulf, celebrates the deeds of
the legendary and heroic Geat warrior named Beowulf. In Beowulf, physical strength is the defining
factor of a warrior s worth.
One instance of the connection between physical strength and worth illustrated in Beowulf occurs
when Beowulf battles Grendel. When news spreads of a horrific monster terrorizing Denmark,
Beowulf is quick to step up to the challenge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This concept is reiterated when King Hrothgar tells Beowulf, [His] fame is everywhere... / Reaches to
the end of the earth, and [he] hold[s] it in [his] heart wisely, / Patient with [his] strength upon
discovering Beowulf had actually won the battle (1703 1706). When Hrothgar discovers he and the
Danes had actually misinterpreted the situation and Beowulf was still a warrior of great strength, he
immediately returns to deeming Beowulf as worthy of praise and support, illustrating the clear
connection between a warrior s success and value. The drastic change in the way Hrothgar treats
Beowulf before and after he learns of the true outcome of the battle quite obviously shows how
strength is directly linked to how a warrior is viewed and treated in Anglo Saxon society.
The final relevant case of strength being used as the defining characteristic of a worthy warrior arises
when a dragon attacks Geatland. As the king of Greatland at the time, Beowulf accepts the challenge
and tells his people I ve never known fear... / I will fight again, seek fame still, / If the dragon hiding
in his tower dares / To face me. Then he said farewell to his followers each in turn (2511, 2513 2517).
The way the people of Geatland remain by his side while he claims to have the ability to defeat the
dragon illustrates how the Geats believe Beowulf is worthy of their support merely based on his
physical strength. However, as soon as Beowulf s confident claims of

Pan Africanism For Beginners Essay
Sid Lemelle hoped for his book, Pan Africanism for Beginners, to be a comprehensive guide to the
complex concept of Pan Africanism. Lemelle begins the book by broadly defining Pan Africanism to
mean the inclusion of all people of African ancestry living in continental Africa and throughout the
world. This definition sets the foundation for his analysis of Pan Africanism. Pan Africanism for
Beginners explores the major leaders and events associated with Pan African sentiments
chronologically. The exploration begins with the early pioneers of Pan Africanism (20) such as Prince
Hall, Paul Cuffe, Dr. Martin R. Delany, and Fredrick Douglass. While this was an early stage of Pan
Africanism, conflicting views on how to deal the issues of racism and oppression. Prince Hall and
Paul Cuffe believed in the emigration of blacks to Africa. However, Dr. Delany and Frederick
Douglass argued against emigration. Instead, they believed that the United States was their home, and
that they should remain (25). Lemelle notes that Dr. Delany later changed his attributes, however it is
unclear if he changes his views from support of emigration to opposition to emigration or vice versa.
This is not a major weakness; however, it did confuse me as a reader attempting to understand the
beginnings of Pan Africanism. One of the initial major Pan African events Lemelle introduced was the
creation of Sierra Leone s Province of Freedom along with the founding of Liberia. These two ex

Essay On Gender Inequality In The Caribbean
Critical Reading and Writing in Social Sciences: FOUN1013
Documented Essay
Worldwide, women are achieving higher representation and success. At the post secondary level
women are earning most of the degrees awarded. Where did our males disappear to? Gender
inequality is an extensive, complex and often vague concept. Simply it is defined as the ranking of a
particular gender, whether male or female, over the other and how they are treated based on their
gender. Gender inequality and the result of male underperformance in schools have become major
issues in the Caribbean, and affect the individuals involved and the society on a whole. Boys

Delinquent behaviours may also develop, such as crime when males find other ways of surviving in
providing for themselves and their families. Society, on the other hand, is economically affected by the
reduction in the workforce. Less people working in an economy, results in a decline in levels of
production. Unemployed persons may also put a strain on the countries resources. This is the current
state of Jamaica s economy. As society progresses and changes, the roles of males and females
continue to change. Historically, Caribbean men were known to take part in manual work or attend
schools, as academic excellence was seen as a male domain, while females did domestic work. Men
were also given better paying jobs, while females had to work twice as hard to be qualified for those
same jobs. In contemporary Caribbean society, the roles have interchanged and it appears that men are
lagging in education as well as in job placements. Due to the history of the socialisation of males, it is
evident in today s society that they are more likely to survive after not attending school than females,
whose only other option is domestic labour. This is so because males are hardened to find other ways
of making a living. (Chevannes, 1999) Figueroa (2004) identifies other minor factors which influence
male underperformance such as: the absence of motivational factors, a

Title: Mitosis and Meiosis
Exercise 1: Mitosis in Animal and Plant Cells
Questions:
A.) What is the purpose of mitosis?
The purpose of mitosis is to create or produce more cells for a living organism. Mitosis occurs when
genetic substance in the nucleus divides or separates in order to create more cells. Cytokinesis
normally occurs next and the single cell develops into two separate cells. This same process continues
to occur over and over creating more cells for an organism replacing old or dead cells.
B.) What other term is commonly used in place of mitosis ?

Questions:
A. Which organ, the ovary or the testes, contained the greater number of gametes?
The organ that contained the greater number of gamets is the testes.
B. What may be a reason for this?
The eggs in the ovary are much larger than the sperm in the testes and it takes numerous sperm trying
to get to the egg before one actually does fertilize the egg and most of the sperm die trying.

Exercise 3: Simulating Meiosis
Questions:
A. What does mitosis accomplish?
The process of mitosis accomplishes replacing old or dying cells in an organism by replicating the
DNA and cell division.
B. When and where does mitosis occur?
Mitosis occurs in eukaryotic cells during the interphase of cell division.
C. What does meiosis accomplish? Meiosis has two consecutive cell divisions that produce a total of
four genetically different daughter cells.
D. When and where does meiosis occur?
Meiosis occurs in the ovaries and testes or reproduction organs during interphase.
E. How do these two processes differ?
Mitosis creates identical cells to replace old or dying cell tissue while Meiosis occurs in the sexual
reproduction organs and creates genetically different cells.
F. How do Prophase in Mitosis and Prophase I in Meiosis differ?

Christianity vs. Entrapment in O Connor Wise Blood Essay
Christianity vs. Entrapment in O Connor s Wise Blood
In The Cage of Matter: The World as Zoo in Flannery O Connor s Wise Blood, William Rodney Allen
addresses the reverse evolution of Enoch Emery and the inverted quest for salvation of Hazel Motes,
suggesting a parallel between the two main characters of O Connor s novel which reinforces its theme
of the utter hopelessness of those who reject or mock Christ. Allen shows that O Connor describes the
spiritually devoid characters in her book in animal like terms, equating faithless humans with soulless
animals. The essay further asserts that O Connor uses the zoo as a metaphor for a physical world that
entraps those without spirituality. Indeed, the novel shows a world of ... Show more content on

Enoch s pathetic christening of the museum mummy as the new jesus garners him only
disappointment. Likewise, his transformation into a gorilla fails to deliver him from his entrapment; as
Allen says, The human animal has come to the limit of his freedom, and he symbolically finds himself
alone in his cage (268). Throughout most of the novel, Hazel remains similarly trapped. Allen points
out several symbolic traps that Hazel encounters, from his berth in the train to, paradoxically, his car,
which Hazel erroneously regards as the way to freedom (262 63). As Allen points out, neither the new
jesus, Asa Hawks, his own blasphemous Church of Christ without Christ, nor his car can help him
escape from the prison of himself (267).
O Connor s position is that a way exists for man to escape the prison of the mundane physical world,
but it is not of self will and has nothing to do with material possessions. This position is in contrast to
those of many O Connor contemporaries; Jack Kerouac, for instance, made a career of celebrating the
joys of the physical world, most notably in his novel On the Road, which portrays the automobile as a
quick ticket to freedom. Other American novelists, such as F. Scott Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby and
Ernest Hemingway in The Sun Also Rises, decried the spiritual wasteland they saw the world as but
offered little hope for escape from it.

2. What is the meaning of the washing motion of the younger monk? Is it the same when Dobbins
does it? I think the washing motion is just a show of courtesy or kindness, maybe even hello, goodbye,
or thank you. When Dobbins did the washing motion, I believe it was an act of respect just like when
the monks did it.
3. The image of the monk cleaning an M 60 is incongruous and jarring. What purpose does it serve in
the story? The purpose is to contrast culture in the U.S to the culture in Vietnam. When people picture
monks they picture peace, prayer, and silence not cleaning guns or having anything to do with
violence. I think it s a case of situational irony because monks wouldn t be cleaning M 60 s. Chapter

Analysis Of The Movie Happy Days
When I was eighteen years old, I embarked on an adventure to get back home to Anaheim from a trip
to Chattanooga, Tennessee. My ride fell through, as did my plans. On my journey toward home I went
to Bourbon Street in New Orleans in the hope that I might be able to work with a ministry there on
that notorious street. We went out on the street after work and would stop strangers to talk with them.
We d offer to pray for them or offer help for more immediate needs such as food or a place to stay.
What an eye opening experience that was for me. Picture Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) of

some were looking for any kind of fun. Almost anything was for sale drugs, alcohol, sex of various
kinds. I was barely making enough money to keep myself fed and still save money for a flight home. I

Explain how access to health care can promote the health of women and their babies during
pregnancy.
Access to health carers such as midwives, doctors and obstetricians can promote the health of women
and their babies during pregnancy. These professionals are able to provide support and information, as
they monitor the mother s health and wellbeing and that of the baby. In addition, they are able to
identify special medical or personal requirements that the mother may need. Midwives are able to
supervise, care and give advice to mothers during their pregnancy.
Furthermore, they are able to detect any problems that may occur if there are abnormal changes in the
mother and the baby and obtain specialist assistance if needed. Obstetricians provide care at public
hospitals and mothers may be able to see one if they are on duty at the time of their appointment.
Women are more likely to see an obstetrician if their pregnancy becomes complicated. However, with
medication and technology, any issues that arise can be likely treated.

Western Techniques In The Searchers
Foreword: It should be noted that while this written piece compares and contrasts The Searchers to the
concept of the stereotypical Western film , the film would most certainly have shaped the mould for
what the stereotypical western was to become. Being one of the largest early Western films to release,
the film s once relatively unique storyline and thematic content have become subject to being
replicated in more recent Western films. Therefore, when comparing the film to the now conventional
Western, it should serve moreso as a critique of the unoriginality of those that contributed to the genre
following The Searchers release.
Introduction
For what is arguably the most successful film to emerge from his long spanning career, film director
John Ford s The Searchers has certainly earned its place as one of the greatest western films of all time
. However, while the film is certainly a staple among other classic 1950s productions, the genre of
Western film does not carry nearly as much weight as it once did over half a century ago. In recent
decades, the genre has grown stale among audiences due to more recent additions, composing of
tedious storylines, repetitive run of the mill characters, and as a whole becoming incongruous with the
evolved social climate which pursues racial equality in the United States. Being grouped with this
genre, The Searchers is often overlooked by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A Brief Note On Summative Assessment Of Unions
Summative Assessment of Unions Thesis statement For workers to create a viable union that will
represent their wishes in the best way possible, it s best they organize and lead the campaign
themselves. Introduction It is a common belief that the best organizers are the workers in a given
organization. It is emphasized that at every stage of organizing process, there should be active
participation of the workers who are seeking representation (Bronfenbrenner, 2013). It is very
essential to getting the contract that they deserve other than just winning an election. As the person

It is recommended that the number of the employees in a committee should be around 10. How do you
build majority support? After forming a committee, you need to build support for the union by talking
to other employees. This begins the public phase of your campaign. The best way to build support is
by getting the workers to sign a public petition that supports the unions key issue and goals. Most
employers will, on the other hand, launch their camping against the union at this point. How do you
choose to go union? It largely depends on where you and your co workers work. If it s private
organization, workers, make a choice through elections that are overseen by the National Labor

tradition union election. What about the employer s campaign? Employers will use different
techniques as a way of preventing the union. Some techniques used are creating conflict between the
workers so as to divide the union support and to create an atmosphere of fear. The union I would

The Cause And Effects Of Domestic Terrorism In The United...
Second, in the last year, many attacks have happened at public venues in America. Many public places
like arenas and stadiums make security sometimes the least priority. The United States is a highly
populated country may contribute to the high amount of attacks that have and could happen. A more
populous nation will have more domestic assaults because they are inhabited by more heterogeneous
groups than smaller countries. The vast amount of the population of these groups in countries leads to
discrimination which causes a higher amount of domestic terrorism than less populated countries
(Ghatak, pg. 71). This quote explains that with a higher population of different race groups experience
more racism towards them, and these racist things have a cause and effect in which it causes the
groups to go against the country and act out with hate and violence towards the country they inhabit.
The security guards checking do not work their hardest to monitor people. Plus, the ways of checking
civilians are flawed as well, and many do not check enough. For example, whenever people go to a
concert and go through the scanners, have people ever experienced someone putting a pocket knife in
a shoe and it does not beep? Do public places like hotels and restaurants need to start searching
costumers? For example, the Las Vegas shooting at the Country Music Festival. A man checked into a

The Origins Of Virtue By The Zoologist Matt Ridley
The zoologist Matt Ridley explores the question of why human beings are so cooperative, even though
we are built of selfish genes in his book: The Origins of Virtue. The book lines up a large selection of
examples of cooperation, utilizing different scientific approaches such as economy, sociology,
evolutionary biology, anthropology (Rinaldo, 1997). It argues that in some human relationships
natural selection promotes virtue and trust, but at the same time humans are egoistic and motivated by
self interest (Leigh, 2000). The book begins with the description of the genetic foundations of human
nature and argues that cooperation is grounded in evolutionary theory (Dugatkin, 1998) and describes
cooperation and selfishness utilizing the examples of ants, corals, bees, mother and embryo
relationship. Next, the division of labour is examined using the notion of Adam Smith about
specialization which is essential to trade and elevates the society to be more than just the sum of its
parts. Chapter 3 is devoted to the Prisoner s Dilemma from game theory, which can be traced through
the rest of the book. It deals with how people are led by self interest or cooperation, how reciprocal
humans and animals are because eventually we gain more from cooperation, despite the temptation to
cheat (Markóczy Goldberg, 1997). This chapter is followed by the extensions and conditions that are
necessary to get reciprocal altruism, which is uniquely mastered by humans. The next two chapters

Comparison Of Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening And...
From the two stories Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening written by Robert Frost and Still I
Rise by Maya Angelou they both have something in common, and that is their struggles. The main
idea in Still I Rise by Maya Angelou the speaker is talking about how people might dislike her. Also in
Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening the speaker in the poem is in the beautiful but snowy,
cold woods starving to death. These two main ideas both have definetly something they are struggling
with. This makes the two stories have many things you can compare and contrast with. Adding onto
the main idea of the two stories the struggles they faced is that the speaker from Still I Rise is hated
from people she knows and they do not like her because of her traits. Like the speaker said You may
kill me with your hatefulness (Angelou, stanza 6, line 23). Also in the other story, Stopping by the

But this did not stop the speaker because he just walked and walked until he knew he was ready to
stop. Like the speaker said But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep (Frost, stanza
4, lines 14 and 15). These are amazing qualities the two speakers had to overcome their

Select a concept Autonomy in Nursing
In today s ever changing healthcare delivery that uses patient as centered model there are issues
concerning the understanding autonomy in the nurse patient relationship. Autonomy is view as a
relevant element in providing advanced nursing care to the patients, and improving the health

nursing context which results in conflicts and rejections of patient s adherence to the care plans.
(McParland et al., 2000, p. 512) ). It is relevant to distinguish that in the nursing discipline autonomy
encompasses two types; personal autonomy as well as professional autonomy exercised by the nurse.
(Skar, 2010, p. 2226) Therefore, developing an operational definition of autonomy helps development
of autonomous nursing practice but also of the nursing discipline. The purpose of this concept analysis
based on Walker and Avant concept analysis process is to establish a better understanding of autonomy
in the nursing practice.
Determine the aims or purpose of analysis

  • 2. Analysis Of The Article Notes On A Politics Of Location... In Adrienne Rich s article Notes towards a Politics of Location, Rich argues that positionality is a way of understanding how power and privilege affect perspective. I am in agreement with Rich that recognizing one s own politics of location is a useful starting point for feminist theory. Rich s main arguments are that the US education system failed to provide an adequate retelling of world histories, that white feminism is ignorant of its privileges, and that through the awareness and inclusion of racial movements can feminist theory grow. I will also compare Rich s article to Simone de Beauvoir s first chapter, Biological Data from her book The Second Sex, and to Judith Butler s article Performative Acts and Gender Constitution: An Essay in Phenomenology and Feminist Theory. Lastly, I will explain how Rich s article is valuable to myself, to the WOMN 2000 Feminist Thought course, and in broader social contexts. Rich effectively argues that white feminism recreates the power structures feminism seeks to disassemble. Rich maintains that white feminism begins with the faulty US education system, or for this paper s purposes, the North American education system. Rich (1984) contends that Any United States citizen alive today has been saturated with...the warning that any collective restructuring of society spells the end of personal freedom....But we are not invited to consider the butcheries...of white supremacism (p. 220). The lack of perspective for North Americans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Franklin Chang Diaz s Vaskimar Rocket Franklin Chang Diaz s VASIMR rocket could cut a trip to Mars from 6 months to 39 days. Diaz created improved versions of VASIMR. He created, imagined, and innovated to overcome challenges. He also illuminated by changing the world s view on rocket engines and by improving Latin America s technology. Franklin Chang Diaz created improved versions of the Variable Specific Magnetoplasma Rocket(VASIMR). The VASIMR rocket engine turns argon, xenon, or hydrogen into superheated plasma. It does this by first ionizing it, knocking an electron loose from each gas atom with a Helicon coupler. • 6. Similarities Between An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge... The Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, by Ambrose Bierce tells the story of a man being punished for a crime. While he is dying, he vividly imagines his escape, the one thing that urges him on is the thought of his family. White Heron, by Sarah Orne Jewett follows a girl named Sylvia who lives in a small country home with her grandmother. She has a simple life: walking with her cow and hanging out with the forest creatures. However, when a young hunter arrives on the scene with a very alluring offer, Sylvia is faced with a tough decision. The setting of the short story, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge , is in northern Alabama during the Civil War. The short story, A White Heron , takes place in New England during the summer on a farm. Throughout the short stories both Jewett and Bierce, describe the similar scenes a pond, a forest, and a faint sunlight. One similarity between the short stories is both take place by some sort of water. Peyton was near a stream when he was shot and decided to tried another method of escaping. The humming of the gnats that danced above the eddies of the stream, the beating of the dragon flies wings, the strokes of the water spiders legs, like oars which had lifted their boat all these made audible music. A fish slid along beneath his eyes, and he heard the rush of its body parting the water (Bierce 1505). This quote describes a stream that was nearby Peyton. It describes a stream of water and the organisms that are surrounding the stream. Sylvia theory was that if a person climbed the tallest tree in the forest they would see the ocean. While on the hunt for the White Heron s nesting spot, she climbed the tallest tree. Sylvia s faced was like a pale star, if one had seen it from the ground, when the last thorny bough was past, and she stood trembling and tires but wholly triumphant, high in the tree top. Yes, there was the sea with the dawning sun making a golden dazzle over it, and toward that glorious east flew two hawks with slow moving pinions (Jewett 1602). This quote shows that Sylvia s view is coming from the treetop; and she sees the sea and two hawks. First, an overview of the new public management model is provided. Second, a brief description of the nonprofit organization, Hands Across the World is provided. Third, the new public management model is applied to Hands Across the World. New Public Management Today the new public management (NPM) model is the leading worldview in the public sector. The political climate and ideology during the 1970s and 1980s served as an impetus to migrate away from the old public administration approach and implement new policies and procedures that would be of better service to the public interest and collective good as well as restore trust and value in the bureaucratic process. Thus, during the mid 1990s, the new public management worldview was realized to apply common practices used in the private sector to the public sector. The goal of this approach was to achieve the same level of efficiency found in the private sector and remove some of the redundancy, lack of transparency, and lack of accountability in bureaucratic government to better serve the public interest. David Osborne and Ted Gaebler s Reinventing Government (1992) served as a catalytic novel in the progression of implementing private practices in the public sector. This is the false assumption that you will see when it comes to database models. The relational database model is great for data that normally can fit into a table, or shows relationships between data, but not all data falls into that category. There are a few options for these situations. You can use an object oriented database, a hierarchical database, a network database, and a flat file database. The first alternative is known as the object oriented. In a document oriented database model, each individual record, and all of the data associated with that record, is thought of as a document. In this type of database, everything that is related to a database object, or document, is grouped together. This keeps the database organized, and easier to find things that are related to each other. Each document is encoding data in some format or encoding. The most common formats include XML, JSON and BSON. These are just some of the formats available, but these seem to be the most popular formats that are being used. A document can have single, or even multiple fields. These fields can vary from document to document, which gives each document a lot of flexibility. There is no need to worry about constraints, like we see in our relational database, but validation documents can be made to enforce rules as needed. This type of database can typically accept multiple languages, instead of just ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The inability to sleep is a source of anxiety and stress for patients in the intensive care unit (ICU); this inability can lead to cardiorespiratory disturbances, immune system dysfunction, impaired wound healing, hormonal and metabolic imbalances, cognitive changes, and delirium. Through the use of quiet times and nursing actions that encourage sleep, or, sleep hygiene bundles, nurses can assist in improving sleep quality in the ICU. These bundles include noise and light reduction, scheduling routine procedures outside of reserved sleep times, the use of earplugs and eye masks, and the grouping of nursing care activities to minimize sleep interruptions. The aim of this proposal, therefore, will be to implement a nurse driven, sleep hygiene protocol, in order to improve patient care by promoting quality sleep in ICU patients. Barriers to implementation include staff resistance to the concept, concerns regarding patient care during sleep times and difficulties in coordinating care with other units. • 17. Autism Is A Genetic Disorder Although autism has spread globally, scientists continue conducting research to identify the precise causes. More specifically, they are zeroing in on genetic mutations, brain chemistry abnormalities, and maternal factors. One possible cause that can lead to autism is genetic mutations. First of all, families studies indicate that children can affected by autism through heredity. It is true that children inherited some characteristics from their parents. This is because a chromosome of a child produced by one chromosome father and the other one from mother, which formed as DNA. As a matter of fact, if parents have some genetic disease, they can pass it to the offspring through DNA. In same way, because autism is a genetic disorder, it can pass down generation. In fact, according to Cowley (2000), the prevalence of having autistic child is 5% of family who already has this disorder, which means around 25 times the normal average. Clearly, inheriting autism through families result in increasing the number of autistic children in the population. Another evidence shows that autism can caused by inheriting genetic disorder is through conducting twins studies. There are two types of twins. First one is identical twins, which formed by splitting one fertilized egg and then developed in two babies. Therefore, they are sharing the same genetic codes. When Hrothgar discovers he and the Danes had actually misinterpreted the situation and Beowulf was still a warrior of great strength, he immediately returns to deeming Beowulf as worthy of praise and support, illustrating the clear connection between a warrior s success and value. The drastic change in the way Hrothgar treats Beowulf before and after he learns of the true outcome of the battle quite obviously shows how strength is directly linked to how a warrior is viewed and treated in Anglo Saxon society. The final relevant case of strength being used as the defining characteristic of a worthy warrior arises when a dragon attacks Geatland. As the king of Greatland at the time, Beowulf accepts the challenge and tells his people I ve never known fear... / I will fight again, seek fame still, / If the dragon hiding in his tower dares / To face me. Then he said farewell to his followers each in turn (2511, 2513 2517). The way the people of Geatland remain by his side while he claims to have the ability to defeat the dragon illustrates how the Geats believe Beowulf is worthy of their support merely based on his physical strength. However, as soon as Beowulf s confident claims of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Pan Africanism For Beginners Essay Sid Lemelle hoped for his book, Pan Africanism for Beginners, to be a comprehensive guide to the complex concept of Pan Africanism. Lemelle begins the book by broadly defining Pan Africanism to mean the inclusion of all people of African ancestry living in continental Africa and throughout the world. This definition sets the foundation for his analysis of Pan Africanism. Pan Africanism for Beginners explores the major leaders and events associated with Pan African sentiments chronologically. The exploration begins with the early pioneers of Pan Africanism (20) such as Prince Hall, Paul Cuffe, Dr. Martin R. Delany, and Fredrick Douglass. While this was an early stage of Pan Africanism, conflicting views on how to deal the issues of racism and oppression. Prince Hall and Paul Cuffe believed in the emigration of blacks to Africa. However, Dr. Delany and Frederick Douglass argued against emigration. Instead, they believed that the United States was their home, and that they should remain (25). Lemelle notes that Dr. Delany later changed his attributes, however it is unclear if he changes his views from support of emigration to opposition to emigration or vice versa. This is not a major weakness; however, it did confuse me as a reader attempting to understand the beginnings of Pan Africanism. One of the initial major Pan African events Lemelle introduced was the creation of Sierra Leone s Province of Freedom along with the founding of Liberia. These two ex slave ... At the post secondary level women are earning most of the degrees awarded. Where did our males disappear to? Gender inequality is an extensive, complex and often vague concept. Simply it is defined as the ranking of a particular gender, whether male or female, over the other and how they are treated based on their gender. Delinquent behaviours may also develop, such as crime when males find other ways of surviving in providing for themselves and their families. Society, on the other hand, is economically affected by the reduction in the workforce. Less people working in an economy, results in a decline in levels of production. Unemployed persons may also put a strain on the countries resources. This is the current state of Jamaica s economy. As society progresses and changes, the roles of males and females continue to change. Historically, Caribbean men were known to take part in manual work or attend schools, as academic excellence was seen as a male domain, while females did domestic work. Men were also given better paying jobs, while females had to work twice as hard to be qualified for those same jobs. In contemporary Caribbean society, the roles have interchanged and it appears that men are lagging in education as well as in job placements. Due to the history of the socialisation of males, it is evident in today s society that they are more likely to survive after not attending school than females, whose only other option is domestic labour. This is so because males are hardened to find other ways of making a living. (Chevannes, 1999) Figueroa (2004) identifies other minor factors which influence male underperformance such as: the absence of motivational factors, a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Christianity vs. Entrapment in O Connor Wise Blood Essay Christianity vs. Entrapment in O Connor s Wise Blood In The Cage of Matter: The World as Zoo in Flannery O Connor s Wise Blood, William Rodney Allen addresses the reverse evolution of Enoch Emery and the inverted quest for salvation of Hazel Motes, suggesting a parallel between the two main characters of O Connor s novel which reinforces its theme of the utter hopelessness of those who reject or mock Christ. Allen shows that O Connor describes the spiritually devoid characters in her book in animal like terms, equating faithless humans with soulless animals. The essay further asserts that O Connor uses the zoo as a metaphor for a physical world that entraps those without spirituality. Indeed, the novel shows a world of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Enoch s pathetic christening of the museum mummy as the new jesus garners him only disappointment. Likewise, his transformation into a gorilla fails to deliver him from his entrapment; as Allen says, The human animal has come to the limit of his freedom, and he symbolically finds himself alone in his cage (268). Throughout most of the novel, Hazel remains similarly trapped. Allen points out several symbolic traps that Hazel encounters, from his berth in the train to, paradoxically, his car, which Hazel erroneously regards as the way to freedom (262 63). As Allen points out, neither the new jesus, Asa Hawks, his own blasphemous Church of Christ without Christ, nor his car can help him escape from the prison of himself (267). O Connor s position is that a way exists for man to escape the prison of the mundane physical world, but it is not of self will and has nothing to do with material possessions. This position is in contrast to those of many O Connor contemporaries; Jack Kerouac, for instance, made a career of celebrating the joys of the physical world, most notably in his novel On the Road, which portrays the automobile as a quick ticket to freedom. Other American novelists, such as F. Scott Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby and Ernest Hemingway in The Sun Also Rises, decried the spiritual wasteland they saw the world as but offered little hope for escape from it. ... Western Techniques In The Searchers Foreword: It should be noted that while this written piece compares and contrasts The Searchers to the concept of the stereotypical Western film , the film would most certainly have shaped the mould for what the stereotypical western was to become. Being one of the largest early Western films to release, the film s once relatively unique storyline and thematic content have become subject to being replicated in more recent Western films. Therefore, when comparing the film to the now conventional Western, it should serve moreso as a critique of the unoriginality of those that contributed to the genre following The Searchers release. Introduction For what is arguably the most successful film to emerge from his long spanning career, film director John Ford s The Searchers has certainly earned its place as one of the greatest western films of all time . However, while the film is certainly a staple among other classic 1950s productions, the genre of Western film does not carry nearly as much weight as it once did over half a century ago. In recent decades, the genre has grown stale among audiences due to more recent additions, composing of tedious storylines, repetitive run of the mill characters, and as a whole becoming incongruous with the evolved social climate which pursues racial equality in the United States. The best way to build support is by getting the workers to sign a public petition that supports the unions key issue and goals. Most employers will, on the other hand, launch their camping against the union at this point. How do you choose to go union? It largely depends on where you and your co workers work. Many public places like arenas and stadiums make security sometimes the least priority. The United States is a highly populated country may contribute to the high amount of attacks that have and could happen. A more populous nation will have more domestic assaults because they are inhabited by more heterogeneous groups than smaller countries. The vast amount of the population of these groups in countries leads to discrimination which causes a higher amount of domestic terrorism than less populated countries (Ghatak, pg. 71). The Origins Of Virtue By The Zoologist Matt Ridley The zoologist Matt Ridley explores the question of why human beings are so cooperative, even though we are built of selfish genes in his book: The Origins of Virtue. The book lines up a large selection of examples of cooperation, utilizing different scientific approaches such as economy, sociology, evolutionary biology, anthropology (Rinaldo, 1997). It argues that in some human relationships natural selection promotes virtue and trust, but at the same time humans are egoistic and motivated by self interest (Leigh, 2000). The book begins with the description of the genetic foundations of human nature and argues that cooperation is grounded in evolutionary theory (Dugatkin, 1998) and describes cooperation and selfishness utilizing the examples of ants, corals, bees, mother and embryo relationship. Next, the division of labour is examined using the notion of Adam Smith about specialization which is essential to trade and elevates the society to be more than just the sum of its parts. Chapter 3 is devoted to the Prisoner s Dilemma from game theory, which can be traced through the rest of the book. It deals with how people are led by self interest or cooperation, how reciprocal humans and animals are because eventually we gain more from cooperation, despite the temptation to cheat (Markóczy Goldberg, 1997).
