Show Boat Sparknotes
Show Boat Changes Its Wicked Stage On the night of December 27, 1927 the musical Show Boat
opens (Laufe 475). The show ends in silence; no applause or a standing ovation. There was not even a
curtain call. (Sheed 120) Producer Florenz Ziegfeld thought that the show had failed. (Sheed 120)
What he did not know that night was that Show Boat was to go on to be one of the most influential
shows in American musical theatre. Show Boat revolutionized American musical theatre by changing
the setting of the average musical theatre work to America to make the show inherently American, by
changing and challenging what topics could be discussed, and by making the songs an integrated part
of the musical that emphasize the themes, express the emotions of the characters, and move the story
along. Show Boat tells the story of a river boat named the Cotton Blossom that travels up and down
the Mississippi River and the lives of the people on and surrounding the Cotton Blossom. The Cotton
Blossom is run by Captain Andy who has a daughter named Magnolia Hawkes. Magnolia befriends
Julie LaVerne, a performer on the ship. Upon stopping in one of the towns Julie is found out to be part
black and is arrested on the charge of miscegenation and is forced to leave the ship. Magnolia also
falls in love with a man from the same town named Gaylord Ravenal, and she ultimately leaves the
boat with him and starts a new life. Eventually Magnolia and Gaylord s marriage breaks up. Magnolia

Essay on The Duality of Light and Matter
In school you learned about the atom as though the electrons were particles. But what if you were
taught wrong? What if matter is in reality a wave? This is the question raised by Lois de Broglie and is
the focus of this essay. First we will cover the difference between particles and waves. Then we will
cover the origin of this debate, the duality of light and the double slit experiment. Then we will look at
the man behind this unorthodox idea, what his scientific background is and his reasons for suggesting
this unorthodox idea. Finally we will examine the data behind this experiment and see if it stands up
or not. What are the main differences behind a wave and the particle? A particle has locality, this
means it can be in only one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the photoelectric effect light was transmitted onto a metal surface, with certain conditions the light
could knock off electrons, its behavior could only be explained by considering light as a particle aka a
photon. In Compton scattering the radiation of high frequency waves off of electrons could only be
explained by considering the radiation in terms of quantified particles. So is light a wave or a particle?
Throughout the years the debate has gone back and forth and back and forth. In the 19th century Leon
Foucault Established that light moves slower in water than in air which is in favor of wave theory in
the same century Maxwell proved that light was an electromagnetic wave. But in the 20th century
Max Planck discovers that light is quantified and not continuous and Albert Einstein reestablishes
particle theory with his mathematical proof of the photoelectric effect. Interestingly a good example of
the ongoing struggle is the fact that J. J. Thompson got the Nobel Prize in 1906 for proving that
electrons were particles, but his son received the prize in 1937 for proving electrons to be waves. Of
course if scientists were questioning the properties of light why not matter as well? Enter in our main
character Prince Louis Victor de Broglie. Prince Louis Victor de Broglie was born in Dieppe on the
fifteenth of August in the year 1892. He graduated from the Lycée Janson of Sailly in

Using A Sample Size Is Dependent On The Study Design
Research studies need not only start with efficient study design to address the hypothesis of the study
but also the determination of the appropriate number of participants that will be involved in the study.
It is true that the sample size is dependent on the study design, on statistical analysis used to answer
the study questions, and on the anticipated association between the outcome and the risk factor. The
sample size should not be too large as it wastes money and time both to the investigators and
participants in the study. It should not be too small as well because it may lead to inaccurate results
causing a waste of time and resources. In addition, participates in a large sample size may be exposed
to unnecessary risk. Therefore, careful attention should be taken while determining the appropriate
sample size for any study as it raises the question of ethical practices.
Any researcher should define the main objective of the study or the research question and the study
design before selecting a representative sample size. Then the proportion of participants, and the value
of the numbers to put in the formula is considered before determining the sample size. Kamangar
Islami (2013) states that the non statistical consideration in determining the sample size are the
availability of the fund, ethical issues, number of participants available, the novelty of the study, and
any similar studies being conducted etc. The investigators give the rationale why their study is

Castle Of Otranto Essay
Gothic Elements of Castle of Otranto Does Castle of Otranto have all characteristics of gothic
literature? Is this novel enough to create a gothic atmosphere? These questions make us need several
gothic stories and romans. Because in gothic literature, there are several characteristics which
influence the plot and settings. It might be know that Castle of Otranto is generally regarded as the
first gothic novel. It means that this novel created some of the characteristics of gothic and added them
new ones. If we take a look at these characteristics, we can see the influences and additives of this
novel. The places where the stories happen has several features which they might be remembered ...

In the good texts, timing and language can not be separated. Because they influence each other. By
creating this kind of language which is a good example for that time s language, the writer show how
he creates the suspense. The language of the novel is effective enough to make us feel frightened,
curious and felt like that these characters literally lived these moments in that era. The mysterious
issues have an important place in the text. For example, curse is the element which completes the
gothic style in this novel. The castle and lordship of Otranto should pass from the present family,
whenever the real owner should be grown to large to inhabit it. The curse, in the text, creates a
tension, especially if we consider its conclusions. Generally, in Gothic, there should be supernatural
elements like in Castle of Otranto. For example, Conrad being crushed by a helmet, as well as Diego
and Jacquez s finding of the giant armored corpse. Ghosts also are represented throughout the text. For
examples; the armor which moves belongs to Alfonso who is not restful. In the first chapter we also
see father of Manfred as a ghost which can move in and out of the picture and slap the door in front of
Manfred. As a conclusion, it has several features which belongs to gothic literature. In doing so, The
Castle of Otranto is a perfect example of gothic

Ontario Approach An Reflection Point Summary
The article Provincial Municipal Relations in Ontario: Approaching an Inflection Point discusses how
the relationship between provincial and municipal government in Ontario needs to adapt to changing
circumstances as time goes on. In order for the relationship to adapt there needs to be more
communication on what both levels of government roles and responsibilities are in order to better
serve the province as partners. One of the strengths of this article is that it is broken up into sections to
discuss different aspects of the provincial municipal relationship and how both levels of government
can communicate to better understand their roles. The article also discusses financial issues and how
the strengthening of the provincial municipal relationship can help combat the financial concerns on
the horizon, such as the municipal infrastructure deficit. A weakness of this article is that although it
provides many thoughtful examples of how the Ontario government has been able to strengthen the
provincial and municipal relationship in the past, it needs to focus more on the solution as opposed to
the examples. The past examples should be only to support the articles argument as opposed to being
the argument itself. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the fact that many municipalities have different needs for their communities they need to
communicate those needs to the province in order to get what they need. The textbook discusses the
importance of these consultations because communication is the only way the province is going to be
able to meet the demands of the municipality. Even though the province is seen as having more power
they need to be able to provide the right support, therefore the municipality needs to take
responsibility of stating what support and finances they

Essay about Object Permanence in Childern
Object Permanence in Childern
Often, research articles are composed of results of new findings and past research. Experimental
psychology relies heavily on the researcher s ability to further expand previous research conducted.
Child psychology, in particular, is constantly building unto old research in hopes of uncovering more
knowledge about children. More specifically, Baillargeon s article Object Permanence in 3 ½ and 4 ½
Month Old Infants is an example of one researcher utilizing proven research from another. In this
case, Baillargeon uses DeLoache s article Rate of Habituation and Visual Memory in Infants to unveil
more ground about the understanding of object permanence in infants. DeLoache s found that infants

The possible event was a box in plain view, which slowly disappeared by the rotating screen until the
screen leaned right up against the box at 112*. The infants spent more time looking at the impossible
event, which suggests that they understood that the object couldn t have disappeared. Conversely, the
infants spent less time looking at the possible event, which suggests that this event was not interesting
to them because they knew that the object had permanence. Therefore, some 3 ½ months old and 4 ½
months old do have object permanence.
In order to set up a valid experiment, one must make sure all the aspects of the experiment are solid.
Baillargeon set up an experiment that concentrated on object permanence, because she used proven
facts from other researchers. The reason Baillargeon used DeLoache s article in her research was to
validate one of her experiments that didn t perform the way she expected. DeLoache s article states
that infants habituate at different times, some fast and some slow, but all infants are able to habituate
to the same level. Thus, once habituated properly, no matter how many tries, both fast and slow
habituates are able to perform the same way. This interested Baillargeon because in one of her
experiments, the infants who habituated slower weren t able to tell the impossible and possible events
apart. As she explained, Their patterns were not unexpected, because rate of habituation is known to

The Federal Bureau Of Investigation
After the terrorist attacks in San Bernardino, the United States government, specifically the Federal
Bureau of Investigation was in a dispute with the technology company Apple. The FBI seized the
iPhone of Syed Farook who along with his wife Tasfeen Malik killed 14 people and injured 22. Farook
and his wife were then killed in a shootout with the police. However, the FBI could not bypass the
security code that Farook placed on his phone, and access information within the device. Therefore,
the bureau requested that Apple create a backdoor which is a mean of access to a computer program
that bypasses the programs security measures. Apple refused to comply with the bureau s request as
the company argued that it would jeopardize the privacy of their customers and is an overreach of
state power. Thus, the conflict was going to be decided legally, until the FBI canceled the first court
hearing with Apple. The FBI was able to unlock Farook s phone without Apple s help through a third
party company. But the government s actions set in place a dangerous precedent. By creating a back
door, the government is able to access information on any Apple device and has weakened the
company s cyber security. To prevent further legal disputes, Congress and the president should create
a modern law that can balance the interests of national security and privacy in the 21st century. Sheri
Pym, a California district court magistrate judge, ordered Apple to create new software or a backdoor

Australian Code Of Research Ethics Essay
1) Codes and policies
Research integrity means meeting the professional standards expected of the researchers in the
institution. That includes honesty and fairness in proposing, performing and reporting research. It also
involves care and respect for all participants in and subjects of research, including humans, animals,
the environment and cultural objects. Researcher should conduct his/her research in a way which
allows others to have trust and confidence in the methods used.
The Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (the Code) guides institutions and
researchers in responsible research practices and promotes research integrity. It assists institutions in
developing their own codes.
In my research, the Australian code and RMIT policy govern my way in which I must conduct my

By using short, choppy sentence structure and weak diction, he seems less of a threat to Othello and
his innocence is enhanced through it. Also, by always using rhetorical questions, he never does
address what it is Othello is talking about. Iago distorts Othello s thoughts and gets him to think he
knows much more than he is telling him about the entire affair. This becomes especially clear when
Othello asks for ocular proof and Iago confirms he has it using statements like I should be wise; for
honesty s a fool and looses that it works for, Act III Scene iii line 378 379, meaning he should not tell
Othello what he knows or it would ruin Iago s reputation. This sets Othello s suspicions aflame and
soon Iago is relaying to him the story about Cassio s dream about he and Desdemona, and finally, he
closes with the handkerchief, the most powerful thing which Othello held as a sacred gift of love to his
wife. He is then completely overcome with jealousy and scorn for his former lover and friend, wanting
death for the both of them. Throughout this passage, Iago s main techniques of deception include lies,
syntax and diction, and hoodwinking Othello into thinking his way. By quickly averting his conflict
with Othello at the start of the scene, he easily avoids confrontation

Face Recognition
Hi class,
You already mentioned some very interesting examples of where face recognition could be used or
already is in use. Authentication is needed more and more in a digitalized world. At first, I thought
face recognition could be useful for unlocking phones or open door locks, for example. But I came to
notice that there are situations in which this face recognition could actually be disturbing or even
dangerous. Imagine a person having an accident and somebody tries to call for help using the cell
phone of this person. Help could be hindered by a phone only unlocking through face recognition of
the owner. A similar situation would arise in a burning house. The owner being trapped inside,
firefighters may not be able to enter the house for help as quickly as they could without a face
recognition lock. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of using a credit or debit card with a pin number or signature, you could use face recognition
to identify the card owner. There is no situation I can think of in which somebody else would legally
have to use somebody else s bank card. Another positive aspect of face recognition in bank business
would be people not having to remember so many pin numbers. Many ATMs already have cameras
installed, so why not use those cameras for authentication? Even in stores cameras could be used to
identify people. The same applies for bank counters or online banking services. Especially the topic of
online credit card fraud would be interesting for using face recognition, as a lot of fraud is committed
over the anonymity of the

Racial Undertone s
The study in contrasts between Shakespeare s Othello and Tim Blake Nelson s 2001 movie O have
many prevalent differences. Issues of jealousy and racial tensions are still deeply rooted into our
society and can be examined in theO, Othello, and the Elizabethan era where many of Shakespeare s
plays took place. The racial undertone was more prevalent in the movie, although in each
interpretation Othello/Odin was the only black individual in each setting. However the most prevalent
differences between William Shakespeare s Othello and Tim Blake Nelson s O are the racial
undertones shown through cinematic techniques and Othello/Odin s self perception.
The director used cinematic techniques and different stereotypes to explore the racial tension between
white and black society. Hugo explains the meaning of the hawk in his soliloquy towards the end of
the movie. He expresses the thought that Odin is a powerful and majestic hawk, this is something that
Hugo desires. Which is controversial because in Othello and O black males usually had aspirations to
be seen as a dove. However the image of a black male does not fit into a white ... Show more content

his past and truly believed that it should speak for itself. He did not allow racial stereotypes to define

Othello did not perceive himself as a stereotypical black male in Venice. In contrast, Odin was more

Lancastrian Exceptionalism In Shakespeare s Second Neutralogy
Lancastrian Exceptionalism: Crisis and the Crown in Shakespeare s Second Tetralogy Sovereign,
argues Carl Schmitt, is he who decides on the exception (5). Far from the only definition of
sovereignty available to us, this narrow understanding, he continues, is a borderline case and
not...routine. Indeed, the exception is to be understood to refer to a general concept in the theory of the
state, and not merely to a construct applied to any emergency decree or state of siege. Thus, because
[t]he exception...is not codified in the existing legal order, it must necessarily be characterized as a
case of extreme peril, a danger to the existence of the state (6). Conversely, in non crisis situations,
Schmitt implies, we should expect the law rather than the will of the head of state to clearly delineate

This way, the head of state does not normally have sovereign power to dictate his will over his own
laws, precisely because the lack of emergency prevents him from acting autocratically. If we apply
Schmitt s theory to late mediaeval English history, we see that he is largely correct, at least insofar as
the royal succession is concerned. Consider the century of stable succession in England from Edward I
s accession in 1274 to Richard II s in 1377, for example. With each king s demise, there was no
question as to who would inherit the crown. Even in the case of Edward II s violent deposal and
murder not simply a single, tumultuous event but rather a gradual erosion of the king s authority in the
years before his overthrow Schmitt s theory holds true. As there was no immediate crisis of authority,
there was no opportunity for a sovereign to step forward and seize upon the exception, and the young
Edward III came to the throne almost automatically, as expected and indeed as the law dictated. In
contrast, the Lancastrian kings who followed Richard II Henry IV, and his son Henry

It would be beneficial to censor the Internet in schools if the censoring program actually worked;
sadly none of the programs are good enough and actually do more harm than good. If there is a
student who wants to find porn on the Internet, he will because the censoring programs suck. Not only
will he find the porn, but also he will not get into trouble for it because since it is censored only good
sites that are approved are available. When I was in high school, I did an Ecology paper and the
censoring program actually blocked out informational internet pages about black bears and bullfrogs,
simply because it contained information about mating habits, which is ridiculous.
Many highly respectable organizations are completely against Internet censorship. One such
organization is the American Library Association or ALA. The ALA is against any type of censoring
software or programs in any of their affiliations across the nation. In Fact, a line in the ALA code of

Examples Of Power In The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby
The high class tends to be blinded and senseless to the multiple privileges given to them by their
wealth ultimately losing their chance to achieve something greater. The novel The Great Gatsby, by F.
Scott Fitzgerald proves how reckless the bourgeois, influence their power over the proletariats
showcasing the status quo in society at that time. The power gained by wealth and status changed the
thoughts and images people have on each other. This kind of society welcomes classism, the struggle
for a person of a lower class to reach a higher standard due to prejudice. Gatsby being born poor tries
to gain wealth to open his chances to see and be with Daisy, this devotion causes his death, and him

James Gatz being born poor with unsuccessful parents had always dreamt of being rich, creating a
persona to fit the ambitions he wished to reach. This persona, Jay Gatsby is everything Gatsby wanted
to be, a wealthy, unbound, and powerful person. He never really accepted his parents believing they
were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people, and that his imagination never really accepted them.
(Fitzgerald 95) Gatsby rejects the classism in society and uses his persona as a drive to change his life
to something more fulfilling, and a place where he can be together with Daisy. This wealth Gatsby
desperately wants leads him to his own demise, losing any other ambitions he had, only focusing on
his desire for Daisy. The moment Gatsby remembers of Daisy is when she vanished into her rich
house, into her rich, full life... leaving Gatsby overwhelmingly aware of the youth and mystery, that
Daisy proud above the hot struggle of the poor (Fitzgerald 142) The senseless that comes with money
is shown how Gatsby once gaining the wealth loses his mind into Daisy, making the second premise
more evident in Gatsby as his desire not be alone drives him to the stage to attempt to take Daisy away
from Tom. Nevertheless classism in society at that time played a big role in Daisy s choice to be with
Tom, as he truly is rich and has a secure wealth, unlike Gatsby born poor, and not truly rich, with an

his desires which soon lead him to his death rather than choosing to use his money to do something

Rank Structure Essay
The Importance of Rank Structure in the Marine Corps Rank structure is important to the Marine
Corps because it form one of the fundamental backbones of military service. Many believe that with
rank structure the Marine Corps or any other military organization could not function. This is has been
proven fact over the centuries by the countless of mob armies that has arisen in history of the fall apart
because they had no clear leadership. One of the ways that rank structure is important is that it is like a
link of chains. This chain forms a link between the highest officer to the lowest of the enlisted. This
chain allows for the anywhere in the chain of command for an order to be issued and it will go down

This is also one of the most important reasons for the rank structure to have been created is that any
time a commander can find out the condition of his troops. And this of course is something that every
commander especially if the commander is going in to a wartime environment would like to know
what strength he is has. Rank structure is vital to the Marine Corps or any military organization
because rank structure is the basis of where all discipline in the ranks comes from. Without a rank
structure know one would know who is in charge of who and everyone would start to trying to take
charge in their own way cause confusion and disorder through the ranks. Also without rank structure,
when rules or orders are broken in a military organization it is up to the superior of that person to
discipline that person, no one would know who was supposed to merit the discipline or who is
supposed to carry out the discipline thus cause more chaos and anarchy. Therefore in conclusion we
see that without rank structure, military organization such as the Marine Corps could not function.
Without rank structure the Marine Corps would be in disorder and disarray, because it would have no
idea who was in charge and who was suppose to be the foot soldiers. Therefore maintaining proper
rank structure is the responsibility of the highest ranking officer to the lowest ranking private in boot

Methods And Reflection Of Major Depressive Disorder
Method and Reflection
While researching about major depressive disorder, we tried to find valid articles that had a great
explanation of the disorder. We were looking for deeper information as to why people have this
disorder, how do they come about having this disorder and how/if people can overcome this common
disorder. There was a great amount of resources through the internet with helpful information. The
internet is a great resource because they even include several experiments to explain their research.
Another method of research was looking through the library to find helpful books that are filled with
information. To prevent any challenges as a group, we would get together and look over what we
needed to accomplish. Then we would evenly divide the work load and send our information to each
other when we were done. If we had any questions about the research or written aspect, we would
reach out to each other via email and help each other.
Discussion
How is it that this disorder could have a negative impact on a person s life?
The negative impact on a person s life with major depression disorder is endless. Unfortunately, there
are no positive impacts that this disorder can offer in an individuals life. Relationships can quickly
waver, work can slowly become a difficult task to complete properly, and self esteem can be strongly
effected in a negative way. All these things which harm an individual with this psychological disorder.

Summary Of A Pair Of Tickets
The short story A Pair of Tickets , by Amy Tan, highlights the distress that war victims face during
times of conflict. Tan accentuates the shocking actions that a mother must take in order to protect her
children while choosing death for herself. These actions question the state of mind that the mother
must have after having to take such drastic measures. Furthermore, this question is carried on to the
modern 21st century because of the crisis that many refugees are facing in various countries, including
their own. Numerous victims of war are being subjected to cruel, inhuman scenes that can have an
affect on their psychological stability. A Pair of Tickets creates a link from the plot of the story to the
real world crisis being faced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Neanderthals Argument Analysis
Up until about a week ago, I never realized Neanderthals were real species. Yes. I have been in this
world for thirty years and never put any real thought into this topic. It s safe to say I will not describe
my teenage son acting like a Neanderthal. The Neanderthals and Homo sapiens were alike comparing
to a few details. By watching the Could Neanderthals talk to use. After going over the data presented

presented was the Anatomy of the Neanderthal and Us in comparison to whether they could

The Use Of Avatars And 3d Virtual Worlds
In cognitive science there is a growing theory that cognitive processes develop when bodies and their
environment have real time, goal directed interactions (IEP). The human mind is stimulated and
developed when the mind, body and environment conjointly interact and influence one another.
Embodiment is comprehended as the distinctive way a body can effectively interact with its
environment through the body s sensorimotor capabilities. In today s world, modern video games have
presented a new form of embodiment that is now being studied. The study focuses on the relationship
between players, avatars and 3D virtual worlds. There is a wide debate about whether the embodiment
of avatars in modern video games can have an effect on the human ... Show more content on

As advertised by the creators of the game, The only limits are your imagination (Jens, Minecraft). This
game is a prime example on how video games can stimulate the mind with techniques such as problem
solving, collaboration, memorization, and multi tasking.
Before analyzing how a player s embodiment of an avatar and its interactions with the virtual world
have an affect on the player s mind, one must first accept and understand how the mind is affected by
the interactions of the player s body and the physical world around it. In Margaret Wilson s article, Six
Views of Embodied Cognition , she distinguishes and evaluates six claims on embodied cognition to
substantiate the theory of how the body serves the mind. The claims are as follows: first cognition is
situated (Wilson 2002, 626), second cognition is time pressured (Wilson 2002, 627), third we off load
cognitive work onto the environment (Wilson 2002, 628), fourth the environment is part of the
cognitive system (Wilson 2002, 629), fifth claim is that cognition is for action (Wilson 2002, 631), and
sixth off line cognition is body based (Wilson 2002, 633). These claims help describe different ways
embodied cognition works in the real world. Each can be compared to similar situations encountered
in modern video games.
Wilson describes the first claim; While a cognitive process is being carried out, perceptual information
continues to come in that affects processing, and motor activity is executed

Cognitive Development And Social Development
This essay will concentrate on cognitive development as opposed to physical, language or social
development. There are two schools of thought which aim to explain cognitive development, namely
continuous cognitive development, through the behaviourist account, and stage like development,
through the organismic account (Smith, 1997). We will explore Piaget s contributions to the field with
his account of cognitive development happening through concrete stages, namely the sensorimotor,
the pre operational, concrete operational and the formal operational stages. The experiments he
developed to prove his theories will also be examined, as well as the criticisms that more
contemporary literature have put forth about these. By the end of this ... Show more content on

Piaget believed shematas to be of essential importance for children s cognitive development, and
assumed that these are stored and expanded. Schematas are patterns of behaviour learned, stored and
then used when confronted with similar situation, for example a person may have a schema about
getting on a plane: get their boarding pass, go through security, wait in the lounge, go to their gate, get
on the plane (this type of schema is called a script) and whenever they are in an airport ready to travel
they will retrieve the schema from memory and apply it to the situation . For infants schemas tend to
be a lot simpler and it is in their course of their cognitive development that these expand and multiply.
According to Piaget, some schemas are innate for newborns. Units of knowledge stored in their brains
at a neonatal stage, for example the sucking schema (Brain Mukherji, 2005) where no one had to teach
the infant how to feed from his mum, or his thumb (Freud accounts for this stage of development as
well, yet he does not class it as cognitive development but rather a stage in a child s psychosexual
development (Stone, 1991) it is worth noting that despite the disparity between the kind of
development, both theorists agreed on child development occurring in stages). Assimilation, therefore,
flows on naturally from schemas as this is the process by which a learned

The Devastation Of Hurricane Katrina
The devastation of Hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans sparked a national conversation
about who, or what, to blame for the disaster. There were inherent problems in how the chain of
command was structured for the response to the disaster, and issues with how the plan was
implemented. Furthermore, since the hurricane disproportionately devastated low income and
predominately African American neighborhoods, many questioned the equity of the implementation
plans. Additionally, historical causes for the disaster could not be overlooked. The history of racial
housing segregation and the embrace of levee policies that endangered the city were also reasons why
many blamed the federal and state governments for not anticipating the disaster ... Show more content

Since the city has already bought into this concept extensively, increasing the height and durability of
the levees might be easier than creating a new system. In addition, this plan might be viewed
favorably by the Trump administration, which is eager to invest in infrastructure projects. Actors that
might object to this plan include the EPA and the people of New Orleans. This is because even if the
levee system were expanded, the system would continue to negatively impact the wetlands and could
potentially lead to larger problems in the future. Additionally, those living in New Orleans who
experienced the failure of the levees during Hurricane Katrina might be wary to see a reinvestment in
the system. Stone s theories of security notes that security can be defined loosely as a freedom from
fear . For those who lived through the hurricane, the levee failure constitutes a significant fear. They
might advocate for an approach that incorporates numerous ways to prevent

Crowd Individuality Essay
It is human nature to acclimate to one s surroundings, but this instinct has created non individualized
activities amongst the public, leaving the non thought provoking state of mind of society (Orwell).
The naive stay happy, tradition brings normality, and a lack of self expression leaves the mind at ease,
for there is no one to reject it. Crowd mentality has driven society since the Stone Age, and throughout
the course of history writers have recorded such mentalities and behaviors loving and/or criticizing it.
George Orwell is not the only author to critique society s forced state of being; many others have an
apparent disapproval and criticism for society in their writings as well. Each one reflects a different
time in history and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is quite blatantly a mental disconnection of a whole town and is far as to have one is even
insulted for questioning it. Mark Twain is society s biggest critique as his whole book Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn is his disapproval of it. In one the many adventures, he stumbles across the
Grangerford s and the Sheperdson s feud, and he exposes their ignorance when Huck asked Buck why
there was a feud. Buck responds with I reckon maybe I don t know (Twain 168) and eventually Huck
witnesses the consequences of choosing to accept traditions without question and it ends in many
pointless deaths. One can see that the trend in blind tradition can end in unfortunate consequences.
Huck s young friend was willing to die for an aimless cause. When a little boy is embedded with a
mentality to fight till death since he was born, something is morally wrong with the social norms of
their society. Another ordeal in the family feud in Huckleberry Finn was that if one chose to befriend a
Sheperdson, they would be out casted from the family and heavily ridiculed as if they committed a
form of betrayal. For example, when Miss Sophia plotted to run away with a Sheperdson, one could
only imagine what would have happened to her if they had

Affects of Ph on Peroxidase Enzyme
The Affects of pH on Peroxidase Enzyme
Claire Bell
Biology 1130

Section 36
Abstract Peroxidase is a turnip enzyme; it is used in the oxidation of hydrogen peroxide to lower
activation energy, speeding up the reaction. The activity of peroxidase is highly dependent on its
environment and most importantly the pH level. Peroxidase has been the focus of many recent studies
and is believed to possibly reduce swelling among other things. We conducted an experiment testing
the effect different levels of pH had on the reaction rate of peroxidase. In the experiment we created
different solutions all containing hydrogen peroxide, peroxidase, and guaiacol. However each cuvette
contained a different pH level, 2,5,7,or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the blank cuvettes, the 2 mL of pH levels 2,5,7, and 10 were added first, followed by the 1mL of
peroxidase. However our experimental cuvettes contained both hydrogen peroxide and guaiacol.
Before the cuvettes were placed in the spectrophotometer we added 0.1 mL of H202, followed by 0.02
mL of guaiacol these two substances were added last immediately before they were placed in the
spectrophotometer. Para film was placed over the cuvette opening, and the assay solution was shaken
and placed into the spectrophotometer where its saturation level was then tested. We recorded the
saturation level of the solution every 15 seconds for 3 minutes. This process was repeated two times
for each pH level for a total of two trials.
Results
Figure one depicts the reaction rate of peroxidase enzyme over time. The y axis shows the absorbance
of the assay solutions, and the x axis depicts time it took for the reaction to occur in seconds.
Figure 2 is a representation of the average saturation of each cuvette at a specific point time as a
function. The y axis shows the specific saturation points from figure 1, and the x axis provides the
different levels of pH. The pH scale provided on the x axis ranges from 0 to 14, 0 being the most
acidic and 14 being the most basic. The point chosen from figure 1 was the saturation levels of each
cuvette at 110 seconds. The saturation point was chosen because in the previous graph at time 110

Psychological Contract Theories of Managing

concepts (mental images of anything formed by generalization from particulars) and principles
(generalizations or hypotheses that are tested for accuracy and appear to be true reflections or

Small Business Failure
According to Forbes.com, approximately 543,000 new businesses get started each month (Nazar).
That places the annual total of small businesses created at more than 6.5 million, in the United States
alone. A small business is defined as an enterprise that has less than five hundred employees. There is
a total of about 28 million small businesses in the U.S. These businesses are responsible for the
employment of roughly 50% of Americans. With an addition 6.5 million businesses being created
annually, you would assume that this number is climbing, however, that is not the case. More
employer businesses close per month than open up (Nazar). As calculated by the Bureau of Labor
Statistics in the United States, the failure rate is as follows; after one year 21.2%, after two years
32.1%, after five years 51.2%, after ten years 66.6%, and after twenty years 79.6% of all newly
created small businesses fail ( Entrepreneurship ). What is the reasoning being that? Why are so many
small businesses struggling to keep their doors open? There are three main reasons why businesses
that are new and lesser in size struggle to survive and often lead to the shutting down of these
newfound entrepreneurships. These sources of failure include poor decision making due to a lack of
experience, financial issues, and competition from other businesses. Lack of experience is something
that every new businessman or businesswoman has to deal with. No matter how much you have

  • 2. Show Boat Sparknotes Show Boat Changes Its Wicked Stage On the night of December 27, 1927 the musical Show Boat opens (Laufe 475). The show ends in silence; no applause or a standing ovation. There was not even a curtain call. (Sheed 120) Producer Florenz Ziegfeld thought that the show had failed. (Sheed 120) What he did not know that night was that Show Boat was to go on to be one of the most influential shows in American musical theatre. Show Boat revolutionized American musical theatre by changing the setting of the average musical theatre work to America to make the show inherently American, by changing and challenging what topics could be discussed, and by making the songs an integrated part of the musical that emphasize the themes, express the emotions of the characters, and move the story along. Show Boat tells the story of a river boat named the Cotton Blossom that travels up and down the Mississippi River and the lives of the people on and surrounding the Cotton Blossom. The Cotton Blossom is run by Captain Andy who has a daughter named Magnolia Hawkes. Magnolia befriends Julie LaVerne, a performer on the ship. Upon stopping in one of the towns Julie is found out to be part black and is arrested on the charge of miscegenation and is forced to leave the ship. Magnolia also falls in love with a man from the same town named Gaylord Ravenal, and she ultimately leaves the boat with him and starts a new life. Eventually Magnolia and Gaylord s marriage breaks up. Magnolia then returns to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay on The Duality of Light and Matter In school you learned about the atom as though the electrons were particles. But what if you were taught wrong? What if matter is in reality a wave? This is the question raised by Lois de Broglie and is the focus of this essay. First we will cover the difference between particles and waves. Then we will cover the origin of this debate, the duality of light and the double slit experiment. Then we will look at the man behind this unorthodox idea, what his scientific background is and his reasons for suggesting this unorthodox idea. Finally we will examine the data behind this experiment and see if it stands up or not. What are the main differences behind a wave and the particle? A particle has locality, this means it can be in only one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the photoelectric effect light was transmitted onto a metal surface, with certain conditions the light could knock off electrons, its behavior could only be explained by considering light as a particle aka a photon. In Compton scattering the radiation of high frequency waves off of electrons could only be explained by considering the radiation in terms of quantified particles. So is light a wave or a particle? Throughout the years the debate has gone back and forth and back and forth. In the 19th century Leon Foucault Established that light moves slower in water than in air which is in favor of wave theory in the same century Maxwell proved that light was an electromagnetic wave. But in the 20th century Max Planck discovers that light is quantified and not continuous and Albert Einstein reestablishes particle theory with his mathematical proof of the photoelectric effect. Interestingly a good example of the ongoing struggle is the fact that J. J. Thompson got the Nobel Prize in 1906 for proving that electrons were particles, but his son received the prize in 1937 for proving electrons to be waves. Of course if scientists were questioning the properties of light why not matter as well? Enter in our main character Prince Louis Victor de Broglie. Prince Louis Victor de Broglie was born in Dieppe on the fifteenth of August in the year 1892. He graduated from the Lycée Janson of Sailly in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Using A Sample Size Is Dependent On The Study Design Research studies need not only start with efficient study design to address the hypothesis of the study but also the determination of the appropriate number of participants that will be involved in the study. It is true that the sample size is dependent on the study design, on statistical analysis used to answer the study questions, and on the anticipated association between the outcome and the risk factor. The sample size should not be too large as it wastes money and time both to the investigators and participants in the study. It should not be too small as well because it may lead to inaccurate results causing a waste of time and resources. In addition, participates in a large sample size may be exposed to unnecessary risk. Therefore, careful attention should be taken while determining the appropriate sample size for any study as it raises the question of ethical practices. Any researcher should define the main objective of the study or the research question and the study design before selecting a representative sample size. Then the proportion of participants, and the value of the numbers to put in the formula is considered before determining the sample size. Kamangar Islami (2013) states that the non statistical consideration in determining the sample size are the availability of the fund, ethical issues, number of participants available, the novelty of the study, and any similar studies being conducted etc. The investigators give the rationale why their study is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the good texts, timing and language can not be separated. Because they influence each other. By creating this kind of language which is a good example for that time s language, the writer show how he creates the suspense. The language of the novel is effective enough to make us feel frightened, curious and felt like that these characters literally lived these moments in that era. The mysterious issues have an important place in the text. For example, curse is the element which completes the gothic style in this novel. The castle and lordship of Otranto should pass from the present family, whenever the real owner should be grown to large to inhabit it. The curse, in the text, creates a tension, especially if we consider its conclusions. Generally, in Gothic, there should be supernatural elements like in Castle of Otranto. For example, Conrad being crushed by a helmet, as well as Diego and Jacquez s finding of the giant armored corpse. Ghosts also are represented throughout the text. For examples; the armor which moves belongs to Alfonso who is not restful. In the first chapter we also see father of Manfred as a ghost which can move in and out of the picture and slap the door in front of Manfred. As a conclusion, it has several features which belongs to gothic literature. In doing so, The Castle of Otranto is a perfect example of gothic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Ontario Approach An Reflection Point Summary The article Provincial Municipal Relations in Ontario: Approaching an Inflection Point discusses how the relationship between provincial and municipal government in Ontario needs to adapt to changing circumstances as time goes on. In order for the relationship to adapt there needs to be more communication on what both levels of government roles and responsibilities are in order to better serve the province as partners. One of the strengths of this article is that it is broken up into sections to discuss different aspects of the provincial municipal relationship and how both levels of government can communicate to better understand their roles. The article also discusses financial issues and how the strengthening of the provincial municipal relationship can help combat the financial concerns on the horizon, such as the municipal infrastructure deficit. A weakness of this article is that although it provides many thoughtful examples of how the Ontario government has been able to strengthen the provincial and municipal relationship in the past, it needs to focus more on the solution as opposed to the examples. The past examples should be only to support the articles argument as opposed to being the argument itself. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Experimental psychology relies heavily on the researcher s ability to further expand previous research conducted. Child psychology, in particular, is constantly building unto old research in hopes of uncovering more knowledge about children. More specifically, Baillargeon s article Object Permanence in 3 ½ and 4 ½ Month Old Infants is an example of one researcher utilizing proven research from another. In this case, Baillargeon uses DeLoache s article Rate of Habituation and Visual Memory in Infants to unveil more ground about the understanding of object permanence in infants. The possible event was a box in plain view, which slowly disappeared by the rotating screen until the screen leaned right up against the box at 112*. The infants spent more time looking at the impossible event, which suggests that they understood that the object couldn t have disappeared. Conversely, the infants spent less time looking at the possible event, which suggests that this event was not interesting to them because they knew that the object had permanence. Therefore, some 3 ½ months old and 4 ½ months old do have object permanence. In order to set up a valid experiment, one must make sure all the aspects of the experiment are solid. Baillargeon set up an experiment that concentrated on object permanence, because she used proven facts from other researchers. The reason Baillargeon used DeLoache s article in her research was to validate one of her experiments that didn t perform the way she expected. DeLoache s article states that infants habituate at different times, some fast and some slow, but all infants are able to habituate to the same level. Thus, once habituated properly, no matter how many tries, both fast and slow habituates are able to perform the same way. This interested Baillargeon because in one of her experiments, the infants who habituated slower weren t able to tell the impossible and possible events apart. As she explained, Their patterns were not unexpected, because rate of habituation is known to relate to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Federal Bureau Of Investigation After the terrorist attacks in San Bernardino, the United States government, specifically the Federal Bureau of Investigation was in a dispute with the technology company Apple. The FBI seized the iPhone of Syed Farook who along with his wife Tasfeen Malik killed 14 people and injured 22. Farook and his wife were then killed in a shootout with the police. However, the FBI could not bypass the security code that Farook placed on his phone, and access information within the device. Therefore, the bureau requested that Apple create a backdoor which is a mean of access to a computer program that bypasses the programs security measures. Apple refused to comply with the bureau s request as the company argued that it would jeopardize the privacy of their customers and is an overreach of state power. Thus, the conflict was going to be decided legally, until the FBI canceled the first court hearing with Apple. The FBI was able to unlock Farook s phone without Apple s help through a third party company. But the government s actions set in place a dangerous precedent. By creating a back door, the government is able to access information on any Apple device and has weakened the company s cyber security. To prevent further legal disputes, Congress and the president should create a modern law that can balance the interests of national security and privacy in the 21st century. Authentication is needed more and more in a digitalized world. At first, I thought face recognition could be useful for unlocking phones or open door locks, for example. But I came to notice that there are situations in which this face recognition could actually be disturbing or even dangerous. Imagine a person having an accident and somebody tries to call for help using the cell phone of this person. Help could be hindered by a phone only unlocking through face recognition of the owner. A similar situation would arise in a burning house. Othello Racial Undertone Essay Nicholas Anderson Dr. Rex English 150 2/27/2014 Racial Undertone s The study in contrasts between Shakespeare s Othello and Tim Blake Nelson s 2001 movie O have many prevalent differences. Issues of jealousy and racial tensions are still deeply rooted into our society and can be examined in theO, Othello, and the Elizabethan era where many of Shakespeare s plays took place. The racial undertone was more prevalent in the movie, although in each interpretation Othello/Odin was the only black individual in each setting. However the most prevalent differences between William Shakespeare s Othello and Tim Blake Nelson s O are the racial undertones shown through cinematic techniques and Othello/Odin s self perception. The director used cinematic techniques and different stereotypes to explore the racial tension between white and black society. Hugo explains the meaning of the hawk in his soliloquy towards the end of the movie. He expresses the thought that Odin is a powerful and majestic hawk, this is something that Hugo desires. Which is controversial because in Othello and O black males usually had aspirations to be seen as a dove. However the image of a black male does not fit into a white ... Lancastrian Exceptionalism In Shakespeare s Second Neutralogy Lancastrian Exceptionalism: Crisis and the Crown in Shakespeare s Second Tetralogy Sovereign, argues Carl Schmitt, is he who decides on the exception (5). Far from the only definition of sovereignty available to us, this narrow understanding, he continues, is a borderline case and not...routine. Indeed, the exception is to be understood to refer to a general concept in the theory of the state, and not merely to a construct applied to any emergency decree or state of siege. Thus, because [t]he exception...is not codified in the existing legal order, it must necessarily be characterized as a case of extreme peril, a danger to the existence of the state (6). This way, the head of state does not normally have sovereign power to dictate his will over his own laws, precisely because the lack of emergency prevents him from acting autocratically. If we apply Schmitt s theory to late mediaeval English history, we see that he is largely correct, at least insofar as the royal succession is concerned. Consider the century of stable succession in England from Edward I s accession in 1274 to Richard II s in 1377, for example. With each king s demise, there was no question as to who would inherit the crown. Even in the case of Edward II s violent deposal and murder not simply a single, tumultuous event but rather a gradual erosion of the king s authority in the years before his overthrow Schmitt s theory holds true. As there was no immediate crisis of authority, there was no opportunity for a sovereign to step forward and seize upon the exception, and the young Edward III came to the throne almost automatically, as expected and indeed as the law dictated. Many believe that with rank structure the Marine Corps or any other military organization could not function. This is has been proven fact over the centuries by the countless of mob armies that has arisen in history of the fall apart because they had no clear leadership. One of the ways that rank structure is important is that it is like a link of chains. This chain forms a link between the highest officer to the lowest of the enlisted. This is also one of the most important reasons for the rank structure to have been created is that any time a commander can find out the condition of his troops. Rank structure is vital to the Marine Corps or any military organization because rank structure is the basis of where all discipline in the ranks comes from. Without a rank structure know one would know who is in charge of who and everyone would start to trying to take charge in their own way cause confusion and disorder through the ranks. Also without rank structure, when rules or orders are broken in a military organization it is up to the superior of that person to discipline that person, no one would know who was supposed to merit the discipline or who is supposed to carry out the discipline thus cause more chaos and anarchy. Therefore in conclusion we see that without rank structure, military organization such as the Marine Corps could not function. Another method of research was looking through the library to find helpful books that are filled with information. To prevent any challenges as a group, we would get together and look over what we needed to accomplish. Then we would evenly divide the work load and send our information to each other when we were done. If we had any questions about the research or written aspect, we would reach out to each other via email and help each other. Discussion How is it that this disorder could have a negative impact on a person s life? The negative impact on a person s life with major depression disorder is endless. Unfortunately, there are no positive impacts that this disorder can offer in an individuals life. Relationships can quickly waver, work can slowly become a difficult task to complete properly, and self esteem can be strongly effected in a negative way. This will act as a powerful incentive for students to take their studies seriously, and will guarantee that all of Fiji s brightest students have the opportunity to continue their education and eventually enter the workforce as leaders in their field. Together with this, the government has endeavored to make education more reachable and affordable, especially for those from poorer families. But unlike our more affluent neighbours, Fiji has never had truly free education for all children. Many parents had to live through the distress and vagueness of how to get their children through primary school, let alone secondary school and a tertiary education. Hence, government is providing free tuition fees for primary and secondary school education for all Fijian children. According to Mr. Bainimarama, this ensures that no child is left behind and no Fijian parent will ever go to bed again worrying about how they will meet their children s school fees or any other fees. The Use Of Avatars And 3d Virtual Worlds In cognitive science there is a growing theory that cognitive processes develop when bodies and their environment have real time, goal directed interactions (IEP). The human mind is stimulated and developed when the mind, body and environment conjointly interact and influence one another. Embodiment is comprehended as the distinctive way a body can effectively interact with its environment through the body s sensorimotor capabilities. In today s world, modern video games have presented a new form of embodiment that is now being studied. The study focuses on the relationship between players, avatars and 3D virtual worlds. As advertised by the creators of the game, The only limits are your imagination (Jens, Minecraft). This game is a prime example on how video games can stimulate the mind with techniques such as problem solving, collaboration, memorization, and multi tasking. Before analyzing how a player s embodiment of an avatar and its interactions with the virtual world have an affect on the player s mind, one must first accept and understand how the mind is affected by the interactions of the player s body and the physical world around it. In Margaret Wilson s article, Six Views of Embodied Cognition , she distinguishes and evaluates six claims on embodied cognition to substantiate the theory of how the body serves the mind. The claims are as follows: first cognition is situated (Wilson 2002, 626), second cognition is time pressured (Wilson 2002, 627), third we off load cognitive work onto the environment (Wilson 2002, 628), fourth the environment is part of the cognitive system (Wilson 2002, 629), fifth claim is that cognition is for action (Wilson 2002, 631), and sixth off line cognition is body based (Wilson 2002, 633). These claims help describe different ways embodied cognition works in the real world. Each can be compared to similar situations encountered in modern video games. Wilson describes the first claim; While a cognitive process is being carried out, perceptual information continues to come in that affects processing, and motor activity is executed ... • 24. Cognitive Development And Social Development This essay will concentrate on cognitive development as opposed to physical, language or social development. There are two schools of thought which aim to explain cognitive development, namely continuous cognitive development, through the behaviourist account, and stage like development, through the organismic account (Smith, 1997). We will explore Piaget s contributions to the field with his account of cognitive development happening through concrete stages, namely the sensorimotor, the pre operational, concrete operational and the formal operational stages. The experiments he developed to prove his theories will also be examined, as well as the criticisms that more contemporary literature have put forth about these. By the end of this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Piaget believed shematas to be of essential importance for children s cognitive development, and assumed that these are stored and expanded. Schematas are patterns of behaviour learned, stored and then used when confronted with similar situation, for example a person may have a schema about getting on a plane: get their boarding pass, go through security, wait in the lounge, go to their gate, get on the plane (this type of schema is called a script) and whenever they are in an airport ready to travel they will retrieve the schema from memory and apply it to the situation . For infants schemas tend to be a lot simpler and it is in their course of their cognitive development that these expand and multiply. According to Piaget, some schemas are innate for newborns. Units of knowledge stored in their brains at a neonatal stage, for example the sucking schema (Brain Mukherji, 2005) where no one had to teach the infant how to feed from his mum, or his thumb (Freud accounts for this stage of development as well, yet he does not class it as cognitive development but rather a stage in a child s psychosexual development (Stone, 1991) it is worth noting that despite the disparity between the kind of development, both theorists agreed on child development occurring in stages). Assimilation, therefore, flows on naturally from schemas as this is the process by which a learned ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There were inherent problems in how the chain of command was structured for the response to the disaster, and issues with how the plan was implemented. Furthermore, since the hurricane disproportionately devastated low income and predominately African American neighborhoods, many questioned the equity of the implementation plans. Since the city has already bought into this concept extensively, increasing the height and durability of the levees might be easier than creating a new system. In addition, this plan might be viewed favorably by the Trump administration, which is eager to invest in infrastructure projects. Actors that might object to this plan include the EPA and the people of New Orleans. This is because even if the levee system were expanded, the system would continue to negatively impact the wetlands and could potentially lead to larger problems in the future. Additionally, those living in New Orleans who experienced the failure of the levees during Hurricane Katrina might be wary to see a reinvestment in the system. Affects of Ph on Peroxidase Enzyme The Affects of pH on Peroxidase Enzyme Claire Bell Biology 1130 Jazmen Myers Section 36 Abstract Peroxidase is a turnip enzyme; it is used in the oxidation of hydrogen peroxide to lower activation energy, speeding up the reaction. The activity of peroxidase is highly dependent on its environment and most importantly the pH level. Peroxidase has been the focus of many recent studies and is believed to possibly reduce swelling among other things. We conducted an experiment testing the effect different levels of pH had on the reaction rate of peroxidase. There is a total of about 28 million small businesses in the U.S. These businesses are responsible for the employment of roughly 50% of Americans. With an addition 6.5 million businesses being created annually, you would assume that this number is climbing, however, that is not the case.
