Symbolism And Meaning In Defiance
Symbolism and meaning in Defiance Edward Zwick s film Defiance is based on the real story of the
Jewish Bielski Partisans that fled to the forest during the German occupation of Belorussia in World
War Two. The film was praised for shedding light on the little known organization and resistance of
Jews against the giant of Nazi Germany. The film used source material from a book by Nechama Tec,
Defiance: The Bielski Partisans. The four Bielski brothers are credited with saving nearly twelve
thousand Jews by hiding and establishing a community in the wilderness. The surviving brothers later
moved to the United States and became truck drivers living out the rest of their lives in relative
anonymity. The film takes direct aim at the typical portrayal of European Jews as victims. When a Red
Army captain in the film says, Jews don t fight, the leader of the group, Tuvia Bielski, played by
Daniel Craig replies, These Jews do This is the sort of heavy handed dialogue that is typical of the
film. The film aims to portray the wide variety of experience among Jews and non Jewish in Eastern
Europe in World War II. However, with such a lofty goal the film falls short. Roger Ebert wrote that
the film really became survival in the woods and fight for survival rather than a typical World War II
film. Through the first half of the film, escaping the Einsatzgruppen or the ghetto was seen a
challenging but not impossible as the numbers in the camp swelled. The real conflict was being

Violence In EuripidesBacchae
Unabashedly, tragedy is brimming with violence and death, it reeks of blood and is strewn with
corpses (Henrichs 173). If it is not the precipice of the action, the plot of tragedy often revolves
around the build up to or the after effects of violence; what to do with the body, how to reintegrate
after the fact, and even what to do when violence is taken too far, such as in the Ajax. As a pervasive
force in classical antiquity, the audience of the City Dionysia would be all too familiar with the many
faces of violence throughout the cusping three decades of the Peloponnesian war leading up to 405
BC. Although it is flawed to attempt to condense tragedy into a single function, it is perhaps less so to
name one as a digestion of the everyday violence of the ancient world. In Euripides Bacchae, the motif
of violence is first presented by means of an enraptured herdsman speech that revels in the spectacle
of violent delights and foreshadows what is to come. This motif comes to a close when a second
messenger reveals the tragic reality of violence and Pentheus sparagmos while the chorus of bacchants
revels in their god s brutality. Through examining the chorus status and perspective on violence, the
staging behind Agave wielding Pentheus head, and the contemporaneous socio political climate in
Athens, the Bacchae can be examined as in dialogue with tragedy s tradition of violence.
The first messenger speech sets the stage for the traditional role of violence in tragedy.

Space 170 Bi Fall 2016
Grant Robbins Astronomy 170 BI Fall 2016 Actually observing the sky through the campus Steward
Observatory telescope brought perspective to just how lucky we are in Tucson to have such amazing
resources to study the sky. The location of the telescope is amazing; right in the middle of our historic
campus which allows the general public accessibility to something that might otherwise be reserved
for astronomers or scientists. Having a 21 telescope to view the night sky expands the field of view
that wouldn t be as wide ranging with an ordinary telescope. Having looked through telescopes that
were probably 4.5 previously, I wasn t really sure what to expect looking through a scientific version.
Clear weather in late November and having a night sky ordinance in Tucson also allows optimum
viewing opportunities year round. Thanks to a local ordinance that strictly limits artificial light
pollution, Tucson supposedly has the darkest night skies of any city its size in the country. Seeing
Stars in Tucson s Brilliant Night Sky. The Washington Post. WP Company, n.d. Web. 05 Dec. 2016.
For a city of 500,000, Tucson is an astonishingly good place for stargazing. I was already aware that
the magnification quality of the telescope influences exactly what is visible through the eyepiece.
Knowing a telescope s optical system captures an image like a camera lens. I realized my eyes had to
adjust to the dark. At first I had a difficult time seeing things until I

Legal And Ethical Issues Of The United States Essay
Navigating through the myriad of regulations of any country is important to comply with legal and
ethical issues that can impact any organization. Every global region has its perspective on how
employees should be regulated and what the rights that should be adhered to. Most of the global
region closely regulate their workforces to their economic philosophies and vision. It is therefore
important that organizations acknowledge and have a deep understanding of any international region
perspective on employment ethics and regulation. Currently the three largest regions for employment
and economic growth include the United States, Europe, and Asia. These two regions and one country
are the global economic drivers internationally, and have different views of labor ethics and laws.
Major legal issues in the United States The United States has passed legislation during various points
in its history to address legal employment issues. The U.S. has dealt with each issue as an evolution of
a growing body of labor legislation that often reflected the times in which they were passed. The
issues that the U.S. has addressed include discrimination, safety, compensation, family leave and
retirement/pension. These issues effect all labor markets within the U.S., and are enforced by federal
agencies, as well as state agencies. Discrimination The issue of discrimination is addressed by on the
landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964, specifically Title VII. The act prohibits discrimination based on

Anti Poaching Act Essay

Dear Representative Collins:
H.R. 2494 Global Anti Poaching Act interests me since I am a strong animal activist. California
Representative Edward Royce introduced this bill earlier this year with hopes of getting it approved.
The purpose of this bill is to support global anti poaching efforts, strengthen the capacity of partner
countries to counter wildlife trafficking, and designate major wildlife trafficking countries. I want you
to vote for this bill because as an animal activist and believer in animal rights I have confidence that
by getting this bill passed, the deaths of animals due to poaching and trafficking will ... Show more

Some countries, however, have recognized that this is a major problem and have begun to take action.

enforcement have come together to decrease the amounts of poaching and trading committed.
Between 2006 and 2008, the WCU generated 63 reports of illegal hunting, trading, smuggling or

The Slave Trade
Through the transportation use of the asientistas, the slave trade was constantly changing and
integrated with the whole Atlantic economy. From 1595 to 1773, a total of 648,688 slaves, or an
annual average of 3,381 slaves every year for the 178 years of trade. However, as with many
economic understandings and studies changes are more important than the totals. Therefore, the
changing sources of supply and destinations are of more importance. With Spanish records, the
Guinea of Cape Verde and the region just south of Congo mouth were the main sources of slaves
arriving to Spanish America. More recently in 1997, Hugh Thomas published one of his better known
works The Slave Trade: The History of the Atlantic Slave Trade 1440 1870. In his piece here Thomas
speaks to the morals and ethics behind slavery as well as how the international profit making business
got started. At the very beginning, Columbus himself became a slave trader in the new Atlantic
business, and thus the slave economy began. Very slowly, black slaves also began to be seen in the
new Spanish imperial possessions. But this occurred without fanfare, and with false starts. However,
when the Spanish Crown heard the requests of many of its officials in the New World, they started to
allow the supply of African workers. It grew rapidly and between 1529 and 1537 the Crown gave over
350 licenses to slavers to carry African workers to Peru. And less than 50 years later a constant supply
was delivered to help

Sherman Alexie s Use Of Figurative Language
The magic of music lies in its ability to allow us to escape while reminding us of what defines our
reality, and it is no different in Alexie s novel. The constant presence of music, a form of flight for the
characters, serves as a repeated reminder to the audience of the harsh, complicated world of the
American Indian. Thus, in framing oppression as something so full of weight and intensity that it can
bring our characters down from the freedom that music brings, we can see the full emotional restraint
and frustration our characters feel, particularly as Native Americans whose entire culture is based
upon sound and expression. In not being able to tap into the cultural well of the land that was once
theirs, modern Native Americans, like Thomas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alexie also blends Native American symbols with modern symbols in order to achieve a more
profound sense of emotional impact, and in including the real life figure of Robert Johnson and the
story of him selling his soul to the Devil in order to be able to play the guitar well, Alexie manages to
portray the way spirituality seeps into Indian life, Then Thomas saw the guitar, Robert Johnson s
guitar, lying on the floor of the van. Thomas picked it up, strummed the strings, felt a small pain the
palms of his hands, and heard the first sad note of the reservation blues, (Alexie 9). Such a mixture of
spirituality and daily life is also enhanced by figurative language, With each successive generation, the
horses arrived in different forms and with different songs, called themselves Janis Joplin, Jimi
Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, and so many other names, (Alexie 10). In mixing the ancient and the modern,
legend and reality, the audience feels the same weight of history that those on the reservation feel, and
feel the same shared sense of community with the threads of their past tied inextricably together. In
acknowledging this history, Alexie seeks to surpass it, to place his audience in the mindset of his
characters and feel the immediate intensity of such emotions without such thoughts and feelings being
muddled, as highlighted by Checker s discussion of her identity, Anyway, all those little white girls
would be so perfect, so pretty, so white. White skin and white dress. I d be all brown skinned in my
muddy brown dress. I used to get so dark that white people thought I was a black girl, (Alexie 140).
By layering figurative language, symbolism, and Checker s memories, we get the heightened

Psychedelic Drugs Research Paper
Psychedelic Drugs
Medical interest in psychedelic drugs has been renewed, but is it possible to overcome their negative
stigma and association with counterculture to move forward with their potential medical promise?
Psychedelic drugs are poised to be the next major mental breakthrough in health care, yet studying any
type of illegal drug is often met with rejection, backlash, or tight regulations (Bushak, 2015). These
drugs, if handled correctly, could potentially change the lives of millions of patients across America.
Many would suggest that the risk is too high, but in which way do psychedelics present more risks
than heavily addicting narcotics or alcohol? This treatment would allow thousands of individuals to
manage pain levels, anxiety, and depression in a whole new manner. Legalizing psychedelic drugs for
medical purposes would be beneficial to society because of their potential medicinal and therapeutic
treatments that heavily outweigh the observed risks.
Psychedelics are generally considered as a substance in which the primary action that occurs when
used is altered cognition and perception (Psychedelics, 2016, para. 1). Psychedelic drugs can include a

The Pros And Cons Of Bedtime Snacks
Many people believe that bedtime snacks are a no no, especially if you want to sleep soundly or if you
want to avoid putting on weight. Some have the notion that food in their stomach will keep them
awake all night or will cause them to have problems with digestion. Others think that midnight
snacking will make them fat. However, sleep experts clarify that the right choice of foods, the timing
and the amount of food you eat just before bedtime can make a difference. In fact, after a stressful day,
certain foods can help you relax before bedtime and can even promote health and fitness by boosting
metabolism while you get the right amount of good quality sleep.

Experts recommend avoiding spicy foods, which can cause heartburn at night. Beverages that contain
alcohol or caffeine can also keep you awake or cause you to awaken at night. This also includes foods
that contain chocolate. Sugary foods and beverages will cause spikes in your blood sugar levels and
can keep you awake. It is also best to avoid drinking too many fluids before bedtime because this
might make you have to go to the bathroom at night.
Remember to avoid eating a heavy meal and just keep your bedtime snack light. As you sleep, your
digestive process slows down, and too much food in the stomach may cause its contents to reflux into
the esophagus, causing heartburn or symptoms of indigestion.
Bedtime Snacks for Fitness
People who want to keep fit by undergoing a weight training program usually want to burn excess fat
and build muscle mass. They usually want to eat small, but frequent meals, including a bedtime snack.
This helps their body undergo tissue repair and growth while they sleep. However, they may want to

Essay on Sharon Olds The Possessive
The Possessive
Teenage rebellion is typically portrayed in stories, films, and other genres as a testosterone based
phenomenon. There is an overplayed need for one to acknowledge a boy s rebellion against his father,
his life direction, the system, in an effort to become a man, or rather an adult. However, rarely is the
female addressed in such a scenario. What happens when little girls grow up? Do they rebel? Do they,
in a sudden overpowering rush of estrogen, deny what has been taught to them from birth and shed
their former youthful façades? Do they turn on their mothers? In Sharon Olds poem, The Possessive,
the reader is finally introduced to the female version of the popular coming of age theme as a simple

From here the tone of unease and apprehension often felt before a great battle is set. This is not a
haircut. It is a preparation for war.
The next image Olds puts into play is that of the vision of her daughter reborn as the enemy. Olds
describes the daughter s hair by saying, each strand now cuts/ both ways. The blade of new bangs
hangs over her red brown eyes/ like carbon steel. This is not a typical description of hair. Olds
specifically compares the young girl s hair to a freshly sharpened weapon. With words such as cuts,
blade, and carbon steel, Olds builds up an image of a lethal weapon such as a knife or perhaps sword,
weapons both clearly used for battle. Olds further describes the girl s hair by acknowledging that all
the little/ spliced ropes are sliced. The line break in the poem which leaves the phrase all the little
alone to be followed up by second line describing the sliced hair, adds to Olds image. All the little
appears as a memory of the mother of her former daughter, a memory that is quickly destroyed by the
second image of those little strands now taking on a threatening sliced form. In addition, the line also
holds a visual separation between the two different images that occupy the mother s same thought

Grupo Damm Final Strategic Recommendation
Introduction and Summary of Recommendation Grupo Damm, one of the largest beer brewers in
Spain, is a strong company in a weak home market. Although many opportunities exist for expansion,
the strongest plan for the company to embark on is an aggressive expansion of its business in the
United States. This project will give Damm access to a large consumer base with minimal risk due to
previous conservative investments in the region.
Situation Analysis Grupo Damm s current situation is the third largest beer company in Spain. It is a
large player in a market dominated by two other beer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Basis for Recommendation 1. The Spanish beer market is contracting, and trying to win a larger piece
of a smaller pie will prove very costly (Appendix 2). As the Spanish recession continues, revenue will
decline as less beer is consumed and margins will shrink as consumers buy beer in supermarkets,
significantly constraining Damm s profits (Appendix 3). 2. Damm has already entered the U.S. market
via a 17% acquisition of U.S. Beverage, a specialty distributor that works mainly with premium
imports (Peet). U.S. Beverage has had a successful track record with imports in the past, and this
partnership will allow Grupo Damm to circumvent the process of having to find a reliable importer
and distributor. 3. The U.S. beer market has been growing, and more specifically, the imported
premium beer segment has been growing within the overall market (Appendix 4). Although other
markets have been shown to be growing at a higher rate (Group 6, Slide 5), the U.S. market is several
times larger at over 208 million barrels sold per year (Jones).
Financial Impact of the Recommendation Under a conservative analysis of the project, an expansion
plan in America will have a net present value of over $350 million for Grupo Damm (Appendix 5).
This project requires minimal capital expenditures because U.S. Beverage has already put much of the
groundwork in place. The main expenses Grupo Damm will face under

Logarithms During The Scientific Revolution Of The 17th...
Though the Scientific Revolution of the 17th century produced many inspiring inventions and
discoveries, one of the greatest contributions of the period, at least in the field of mathematics, was the
introduction of logarithms. Mathematically, a logarithm is denoted as follows logb(x)=y, where y is
the power to which b must be raised in order to produce the answer x. However, simply explained, a
logarithm is a quantity representing the power to which a fixed number, the base, must be raised to
produce a specific number. Therefore, to give just one computational example, log2(32) = 5 because
25 =32.
The term logarithm was derived from the Greek words for ratio and number. Conceptually speaking,
logarithms are the inverse operation of exponents. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

calculation that is used daily in our modern life. By referring back to the logarithm tables, large and

scientific discoveries being made, and resulted in a highly convenient and faster method for

Brian Cashman has a large decisional role because he has to make the correct decisions for the fans to
be content and the team to win. Back when the Yankees won several consecutive championships in the

interact with his players in a way that allowed them to perform at or above their potential, and he also
had an incredible amount of knowledge for the types of players he needed to succeed. The owner and
general manager had good technical and conceptual skills because it was important that they plan,
evaluate, and organize the formation of a successful organization. They had to evaluate the existing
organization, plan what players to trade for, and organize the business matters. I know that the
organization s main goal is to win national championships, but they also want to be effective and
efficient in doing so. When the owner George Steinbrenner goes out and gets all star caliber players to
win the American League East division and the World Series, he has to pay a lot of money in order to
attract them to his team. In terms of being a successful leader, it is obvious that George Steinbrenner

Many dramas use family relationships as a primary force of the plot. In Death of a Salesman, Willy s
relationship with his son s allows the author, Arthur Miller, to reveal the conflicts that can result in a
father son relationship. Willy s relationship with his older son, Biff differs in conflict from his
relationship with his younger son, Happy. Both relationships have their flaws and both relationships
have suffered from Willy s inability to teach his son s positive values.
Happy, the younger of the two sons, has taken on many of his father s traits. Although he has a rather
successful job, he feels the need to embellish the truth of his success just as Willy has done in the past.

Symbolism In My Papa s Waltz, By Theodore Roethke
In the poem My Papa s Waltz written by Theodore Roethke, the interpretation of the poem depends on
the readers` perspective. Some people think that this poem is one of a happy exchange between a
father and son. Others believe that it has a hidden message of child abuse. In my point of view, the
imagery and language, the symbolism, and tone in My Papas Waltz gave me the impression of the
abusive relationship between the father and son, but then later realizing the positive side. After reading
the first line of Roethke s piece, My Papas Waltz, I automatically assumed this poem had negative
meaning. The first two lines state, The whiskey on your breath Could make a small boy dizzy (Lines 1
2). Meaning The father has been drinking, and not just a little. He s so intoxicated that even the smell
of his breath could make a small boy, like his son, feel a bit woozy. This gives a first impression of a
father being intoxicated who has the ability to harm the child. For most it is not a great situation when
a drunken adult presents himself to a child. This poem could be seen as a depiction of a young boy s
experience of abuse from his father. But I hang on like death seems to show a child s frightful feeling
from having to face a drunken father. The image in my head here is that of the father and his child
waltzing around the kitchen with the boy having to hold on like death. The word death could have
been intended to emphasize the helplessness of the child against his drunken

Educating Members Of A Psychotherapy Group
1. Most times we get confused with these two terms because of their overlapping into each other.
Though they may be similar, they are different and sever different purposes. A psychoeducation group
is like the shadow of a psychotherapy group. Psychoeducation group focuses more on educating
members of the group about the different aspects of psychology. The Psychoeducation aspect of any
psychoed group is sometimes be referred to as an awareness group.
On the other hand, a psychotherapy group is a group that offers services or treatment to members of
the group. Psychotherapy group can many forms and it varies based on the focus of the group. This is

There is no doubt that the study of chemistry has changed the world dramatically. Under the right

It is important to understand what an EpiPen® is, and how it works to one day save a life if necessary.
What will further be discussed is what an EpiPen® is, how it is made, used, and how it works
chemically in the human body.
The EpiPen® is an auto injecting pen made with epinephrine. Epinephrine commonly known as

With just a very quick exposure to an allergen, anaphylaxis can occur immediately. Allergens can be
anything from dust, food products such as peanuts, shellfish, nuts, and even insects and sting like bees
and wasp stings. Life threatening symptoms of anaphylaxis include dizziness, unconsciousness,
shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and fast heart beat. The most serious threat to the human life
during anaphylaxis is the lack of oxygen, O2. With lack of O2 the brain begins to lose brain cells. The
brain is in control of all the systems in the body as more time passes without O2 organs begin to fail
and the heart also stops beating.4 Other symptoms of swelling of the mouth, coughing, hives on the

Canada Is An Example Of A Mixed Economy
Canada is an example of a mixed economy. A mixed economy sits between the planned and market
economy on the economic continuum. It is usually considered the best type of economy since it
distributes control equally between individuals and the government. Unlike planned economies in
which the government is given primary control over certain aspects of life, the mixed economy gives
the government less control and regulation. This allows sellers and private markets to be able to
expand and grow their business without any interruptions. Of course, the government has to step in
once in a while to ensure that there is no illegal activity going on and that work environments are
being kept safe, but for the most part, the owner has the right to be

Character Development In Stranger Than Fiction
Stranger Than Fiction Character Development The amount of characters in Stranger than Fiction is
plenty for a movie, but only one person in the film had shown character development. That Character
in the film Harold Crick, he definitely changed from the beginning of the film to the end. A few
character developments were used to describe Harold, such as, personal history, what they say, what
others say about them, and physical appearance, etc.... One way Harold Crick had character
development was what the narrator or Caryn Stiffle had said about him. Harold was a little OCD, he
had a schedule, a number of brush strokes while brushing his teeth, and wearing a neatly pressed suit
to work. He worked for the IRS, and didn t like working there.

Mousepox Model
Smallpox is an acute contagious viral disease that has a relatively high fatality rate in immunologically
naive populations. It is caused by variola virus, which is a member of a larger pox family of viruses.
Smallpox can manifest itself in two clinical forms (variola major and variola minor) and it can be
transmitted from person to person. There is no specific treatment for this disease other than the
management of symptoms.
It is believed that smallpox originated about 3000 years ago in either Egypt or India. Due to its high
mortality rate, outbreaks of this disease had a significant impact on the course of history. During the
twentieth century alone, smallpox is estimated to have caused over 500 million human deaths around
the world.

Ordinary smallpox can be found between those two extreme scenarios.
Establishing a diagnosis
In December 1979, a scientific commission concluded that smallpox had been globally eradicated and
the World Health Assembly endorsed its findings in 1980. Nevertheless, a future outbreak of smallpox
due to the release of variola virus whether accidental or deliberate cannot be fully excluded.
Due to the serious consequences of a diagnosis or misdiagnosis of smallpox, it is of utter most
importance to reliably and unambiguously identify smallpox, as well as to differentiate it from other
similar clinical entities. Although there are other causes of rash that present as vesicles and pustules,
smallpox can be distinguished by severe prodrome and its course.
Clinical case definition of smallpox states that this disease presents with acute onset of fever greater
than 101 °F (or 38.3 °C), followed by a rash characterized by firm, deep seated vesicles or pustules in
the same stage of development without any other apparent

The beginning of Microsoft Inc. started with Bill Gates and Paul Allen writing computer program

Later that year Bill Gates left Harvard University to work full time developing programming

Is it summer when you are reading this? Late spring? If you live in Dixie that s pretty much the same
thing, of course, but for that matter late winter in the South would be considered summer in New

means it is blackberry picking time. Who doesn t have fond childhood memories of plucking these

Libertarianism Vs Classical Liberalism
Classical Liberalism is an ideology with its focus on individual liberty with a limited government. The
belief that an individual should have the freedom to pursue and be responsible for their own life. It
stems from an idea that humans, as a whole, are generally good in nature, and that people should have
rights apart from the government. These rights include the right to pursue happiness, the right to
financial success, or even failure, and the right to free speech and freedom of religion. Individuals
have equal opportunities in life, but not equal materialistic beginnings or gains. You had the right to
own land, but it was up to the individual to obtain it. Classical Libertarians thought the role of
government should be very limited, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The basic concept that the individual has the right to liberty is still there. However the role of
government has changed. The modern Liberal feels that the purpose of government not only to protect
individual rights, but to also provide social welfare, benefiting society as a whole, (Downes,
yaliberty.org). This would include things like financial assistance, universal health care, and free and
equal education. Also todays Libertarian party supports the government enforcing more rules and
regulations to big corporations. The political platform of todays Liberal can seem misleading to some.
One example of this is individual abortion rights. Modern Libertarianism supports the right of the
individual to be able to make their own decision to have an abortion, the government should not have
a say in the matter. This shows support for the classical belief that government should not play a big
part in an individuals life. However, by contrast, todays Liberal political platform also feels that the
government should not perform executions even for convicted serial killers, (Goodman ncpa.org).
This directly goes against the classical view that the governments role is to protect the individuals

the girl is twelve... And their last name is Wiggin. (p.227) But Graff recommended, and I agree, that
we should leave them alone. Not expose them. Make no report at this time except that we have

any domestic group, either... (p.228). This show that the fact that Graff and the other commander

So during the voyage, after breakfast and morning exercises, Ender and Graff would usually talk.
About Command School. About Earth. About astronomy and physics and whatever Ender wanted to

they also don t have any communication devices on their ships... (p.248) ...but somebody dredged the
name ansible out of an old book somewhere and it caught on...That means that ships could talk to each
other even when they re across the solar system... (p.249). Both of these three quotes reveal the main
things that Ender was learned during the trip to Command School, and most important of it that Ender

Antibiotics Lab Report
The purpose of this experiment was to test the effectiveness of different antibiotics. The antimicrobial
activity of selected antibiotics and hand sanitizer on different bacteria was evaluated. The method used
to determine antibiotic sensitivity was the sensitivity disk method. Antibiotics were put onto paper
disks and then placed on agar plates that had been spread with bacterial culture. The plate was
incubated for a week, and then the zone of inhibition (area of no bacterial growth) around the disk was
measured. This measure of the inhibition zone indicated the susceptibility or resistance of the
bacterium to the antibiotic. And by comparing the experimentally determined zone diameters with
known diameters, susceptibility patterns known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each group determined the zone size of the bacterial strains in the different antibiotics. Additionally,
by comparing their measured data to the zone diameter interpretive chart in the lab procedure, the
groups determined whether their bacterial strains were resistant, intermediate, or susceptible to the
antimicrobial agents used. In the end, all groups shared their data with each other. This table shows the
collective data for the lab section. One bacterial strain, Escherichia coli, MZ8 was not picked by any
group so there was no data for it.
Discussion: If a bacterial strain is susceptible to an antibiotic, it can be inhibited by a concentration of
this drug. The antibiotic will be associated with a high chance of therapeutic success. If a bacterial
strain is said to be intermediate when it is inhibited by a concentration of this drug, then it is
associated with an uncertain therapeutic effect. And if a bacterial strain is said to be resistant to an
antibiotic, then this drug is associated with a high chance of therapeutic failure.

A Survey Of Image Based Artistic Rendering Techniques
A survey of Image Based Artistic Rendering techniques
Introduction
Paintings have been known to capture the human imagination since the pre historic times. A skilled
artist can evoke a range of human emotions and can portray things like appearances, playing of light
in surfaces, mood etc. on the paper. Similarly, with the invention of photography in the 19th century,
the artists got a new medium for their expressiveness and simulated artistic diversity. The field of non
photorealistic rendering started off in the early nineties with the aim of using the power of computer
graphics and create an interface between the two fields. With the exponential rise in computational
power and the advances made in computer graphics, the field has ... Show more content on

Also, researchers increasingly sought to automate the process and enhance the sophistication of stroke
placement.
The work by Haeberli[2] enabled people to transform photographs into impressionist paintings with
minimal labor. The user clicked on a photo, and the underlying system automatically placed the virtual
strokes by using the color of the source image. They also added noise to results to enhance the
impressionist effect. However, the first automatic solution was a tool proposed by Litwinowicz [3].
This is the paper which we review first in this report.
Processing Images and Video for an Impressionist Effect
This paper aims producing impressions of the original image, i.e. images that give a sense of an
original image without reproducing it. They happen to have a painterly feel to them and appear as they
have been hand painted. They produce painterly animation from video clips automatically after the
user specifies a few parameters to generate he first frame. After the user s preferences are taken into
account and he approves the first frame, the whole video segment is automatically produced without
further user intervention.
The biggest challenge in videos is to produce a temporally coherent style of animation which avoids
flicker and takes into account the movement of objects in the video. This paper was the first one to use
optical flow to compute the per pixel movement in images and use it to generate a sequence which is

Cole Stryker What Is Wrong With Public Shaming
What s wrong with public shaming? An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth (Hammurabi). Now in
this day and age most might say this is excessive, but when it comes to public shaming, far too many
are not quite as hesitant. In Cole Stryker s excerpt The Problem with Public Shaming, he makes it
quite clear that there are better ways to punish an individual rather than ruining their lives by publicly
humiliating them. Cole states public shaming is a thing of the past and should find new ways to treat
criminals, that to dox (digging up of a target s personal information) an individual is harmful to both
parties, and stating that public shaming is counterproductive. An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth

It is human nature for people to get even with whomever does them wrong. Hollywood the movie
industry has made and is going to make countless moves on people getting their revenge. This human
reaction not only distances oneself from the right to logic, but leaves no room for the chance of
forgiveness. Without forgiveness, there is resentment towards a certain person or a multitude of
people. Cole gives many examples of the counterproductive ways that deal with public shaming. For
example, when someone is effected by a crime and they look for help from local police forces, but are
rejected from such task force. This rejection now casts an ideology that all police officers do not care,
in return leaving a disdainful image of all police officers. Now with the case Black Lives Matter, this
organization preaches to the masses that police officers are patrolling the streets look for young black
men to kill. This movement stemmed from no justice being brought forward to the accused criminal.
There has been multiple incidents like the one previously stated which is why such a hatred has been
casted upon all police forces in America. Rather than jailing the person responsible, a mere slap on the
wrist is all that happens. Police officers all over America are scared to do their job, living in the
shadows trying to keep themselves on the right side of the ledger. Trying to keep as much distance as
possible away from groups trying to inflict

Cuban Revolution By Andrew Caminiti
Cuban Communist Revolution
By Andrew Caminiti
The terrible conditions that many Cuban citizens lived under during the Batista regime was
unacceptable. The Cuban Citizens wanted a change and started a revolution. To find out why we go all
the way back to 1868 when the United States defeated the Spanish Army giving Cuba its
independence. The Cubans elected Fulgencio Batista who did not allow any more elections to take
place. This angered many and a new revolution leader formed, Fidel Castro. Fidel overthrew the
Batista Regime and named himself dictator. He started close economic ties with the Soviet Union.
Shortly after this the United States ended any ties with the Cuban government. The causes of the
Cuban Revolution were terrible conditions under the Batista regime, the spread of Communism, and
the Spanish American war. The effects of the Cuban Revolution were the downfall of the economy,
Cuban missile crisis, and end of any diplomatic relations with the United States. The Cuban
Revolution connects to Global citizenship because the citizens fought for their rights which ended up
helping their daily life but hurting their economy. One major cause of the Cuban Communist
Revolution was the terrible conditions under Fulgencio Batista. The Batista regime was a corrupt
presidency. Batista did not allow any other elections to take place while he held office, making him an
undeclared dictator. Under this regime many people could not find work except in the summer

conscious is the right choice of clothing. It helps them create an image and an identity for themselves.

  • 2. Symbolism And Meaning In Defiance Symbolism and meaning in Defiance Edward Zwick s film Defiance is based on the real story of the Jewish Bielski Partisans that fled to the forest during the German occupation of Belorussia in World War Two. The film was praised for shedding light on the little known organization and resistance of Jews against the giant of Nazi Germany. The film used source material from a book by Nechama Tec, Defiance: The Bielski Partisans. The four Bielski brothers are credited with saving nearly twelve thousand Jews by hiding and establishing a community in the wilderness. The surviving brothers later moved to the United States and became truck drivers living out the rest of their lives in relative anonymity. The film takes direct aim at the typical portrayal of European Jews as victims. When a Red Army captain in the film says, Jews don t fight, the leader of the group, Tuvia Bielski, played by Daniel Craig replies, These Jews do This is the sort of heavy handed dialogue that is typical of the film. The film aims to portray the wide variety of experience among Jews and non Jewish in Eastern Europe in World War II. However, with such a lofty goal the film falls short. Roger Ebert wrote that the film really became survival in the woods and fight for survival rather than a typical World War II film. Through the first half of the film, escaping the Einsatzgruppen or the ghetto was seen a challenging but not impossible as the numbers in the camp swelled. The real conflict was being ... • 3. Violence In EuripidesBacchae Unabashedly, tragedy is brimming with violence and death, it reeks of blood and is strewn with corpses (Henrichs 173). If it is not the precipice of the action, the plot of tragedy often revolves around the build up to or the after effects of violence; what to do with the body, how to reintegrate after the fact, and even what to do when violence is taken too far, such as in the Ajax. As a pervasive force in classical antiquity, the audience of the City Dionysia would be all too familiar with the many faces of violence throughout the cusping three decades of the Peloponnesian war leading up to 405 BC. Although it is flawed to attempt to condense tragedy into a single function, it is perhaps less so to name one as a digestion of the everyday violence of the ancient world. In Euripides Bacchae, the motif of violence is first presented by means of an enraptured herdsman speech that revels in the spectacle of violent delights and foreshadows what is to come. This motif comes to a close when a second messenger reveals the tragic reality of violence and Pentheus sparagmos while the chorus of bacchants revels in their god s brutality. Through examining the chorus status and perspective on violence, the staging behind Agave wielding Pentheus head, and the contemporaneous socio political climate in Athens, the Bacchae can be examined as in dialogue with tragedy s tradition of violence. The first messenger speech sets the stage for the traditional role of violence in tragedy. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Space 170 Bi Fall 2016 Grant Robbins Astronomy 170 BI Fall 2016 Actually observing the sky through the campus Steward Observatory telescope brought perspective to just how lucky we are in Tucson to have such amazing resources to study the sky. The location of the telescope is amazing; right in the middle of our historic campus which allows the general public accessibility to something that might otherwise be reserved for astronomers or scientists. Having a 21 telescope to view the night sky expands the field of view that wouldn t be as wide ranging with an ordinary telescope. Having looked through telescopes that were probably 4.5 previously, I wasn t really sure what to expect looking through a scientific version. Clear weather in late November and having a night sky ordinance in Tucson also allows optimum viewing opportunities year round. Thanks to a local ordinance that strictly limits artificial light pollution, Tucson supposedly has the darkest night skies of any city its size in the country. Seeing Stars in Tucson s Brilliant Night Sky. The Washington Post. WP Company, n.d. Web. 05 Dec. 2016. For a city of 500,000, Tucson is an astonishingly good place for stargazing. I was already aware that the magnification quality of the telescope influences exactly what is visible through the eyepiece. Knowing a telescope s optical system captures an image like a camera lens. I realized my eyes had to adjust to the dark. At first I had a difficult time seeing things until I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Legal And Ethical Issues Of The United States Essay Navigating through the myriad of regulations of any country is important to comply with legal and ethical issues that can impact any organization. Every global region has its perspective on how employees should be regulated and what the rights that should be adhered to. Most of the global region closely regulate their workforces to their economic philosophies and vision. It is therefore important that organizations acknowledge and have a deep understanding of any international region perspective on employment ethics and regulation. Currently the three largest regions for employment and economic growth include the United States, Europe, and Asia. These two regions and one country are the global economic drivers internationally, and have different views of labor ethics and laws. Major legal issues in the United States The United States has passed legislation during various points in its history to address legal employment issues. The U.S. has dealt with each issue as an evolution of a growing body of labor legislation that often reflected the times in which they were passed. The issues that the U.S. has addressed include discrimination, safety, compensation, family leave and retirement/pension. These issues effect all labor markets within the U.S., and are enforced by federal agencies, as well as state agencies. Discrimination The issue of discrimination is addressed by on the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964, specifically Title VII. The act prohibits discrimination based on ... California Representative Edward Royce introduced this bill earlier this year with hopes of getting it approved. The purpose of this bill is to support global anti poaching efforts, strengthen the capacity of partner countries to counter wildlife trafficking, and designate major wildlife trafficking countries. • 7. The Slave Trade Through the transportation use of the asientistas, the slave trade was constantly changing and integrated with the whole Atlantic economy. From 1595 to 1773, a total of 648,688 slaves, or an annual average of 3,381 slaves every year for the 178 years of trade. However, as with many economic understandings and studies changes are more important than the totals. Therefore, the changing sources of supply and destinations are of more importance. With Spanish records, the Guinea of Cape Verde and the region just south of Congo mouth were the main sources of slaves arriving to Spanish America. More recently in 1997, Hugh Thomas published one of his better known works The Slave Trade: The History of the Atlantic Slave Trade 1440 1870. In his piece here Thomas speaks to the morals and ethics behind slavery as well as how the international profit making business got started. At the very beginning, Columbus himself became a slave trader in the new Atlantic business, and thus the slave economy began. Very slowly, black slaves also began to be seen in the new Spanish imperial possessions. But this occurred without fanfare, and with false starts. However, when the Spanish Crown heard the requests of many of its officials in the New World, they started to allow the supply of African workers. It grew rapidly and between 1529 and 1537 the Crown gave over 350 licenses to slavers to carry African workers to Peru. And less than 50 years later a constant supply was delivered to help ... • 8. Sherman Alexie s Use Of Figurative Language The magic of music lies in its ability to allow us to escape while reminding us of what defines our reality, and it is no different in Alexie s novel. The constant presence of music, a form of flight for the characters, serves as a repeated reminder to the audience of the harsh, complicated world of the American Indian. Thus, in framing oppression as something so full of weight and intensity that it can bring our characters down from the freedom that music brings, we can see the full emotional restraint and frustration our characters feel, particularly as Native Americans whose entire culture is based upon sound and expression. In not being able to tap into the cultural well of the land that was once theirs, modern Native Americans, like Thomas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alexie also blends Native American symbols with modern symbols in order to achieve a more profound sense of emotional impact, and in including the real life figure of Robert Johnson and the story of him selling his soul to the Devil in order to be able to play the guitar well, Alexie manages to portray the way spirituality seeps into Indian life, Then Thomas saw the guitar, Robert Johnson s guitar, lying on the floor of the van. Thomas picked it up, strummed the strings, felt a small pain the palms of his hands, and heard the first sad note of the reservation blues, (Alexie 9). Such a mixture of spirituality and daily life is also enhanced by figurative language, With each successive generation, the horses arrived in different forms and with different songs, called themselves Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, and so many other names, (Alexie 10). In mixing the ancient and the modern, legend and reality, the audience feels the same weight of history that those on the reservation feel, and feel the same shared sense of community with the threads of their past tied inextricably together. In acknowledging this history, Alexie seeks to surpass it, to place his audience in the mindset of his characters and feel the immediate intensity of such emotions without such thoughts and feelings being muddled, as highlighted by Checker s discussion of her identity, Anyway, all those little white girls would be so perfect, so pretty, so white. White skin and white dress. I d be all brown skinned in my muddy brown dress. I used to get so dark that white people thought I was a black girl, (Alexie 140). • 9. Psychedelic Drugs Research Paper Psychedelic Drugs Medical interest in psychedelic drugs has been renewed, but is it possible to overcome their negative stigma and association with counterculture to move forward with their potential medical promise? Psychedelic drugs are poised to be the next major mental breakthrough in health care, yet studying any type of illegal drug is often met with rejection, backlash, or tight regulations (Bushak, 2015). These drugs, if handled correctly, could potentially change the lives of millions of patients across America. Many would suggest that the risk is too high, but in which way do psychedelics present more risks than heavily addicting narcotics or alcohol? This treatment would allow thousands of individuals to manage pain levels, anxiety, and depression in a whole new manner. Legalizing psychedelic drugs for medical purposes would be beneficial to society because of their potential medicinal and therapeutic treatments that heavily outweigh the observed risks. Psychedelics are generally considered as a substance in which the primary action that occurs when used is altered cognition and perception (Psychedelics, 2016, para. 1). Some have the notion that food in their stomach will keep them awake all night or will cause them to have problems with digestion. Others think that midnight snacking will make them fat. However, sleep experts clarify that the right choice of foods, the timing and the amount of food you eat just before bedtime can make a difference. This also includes foods that contain chocolate. Sugary foods and beverages will cause spikes in your blood sugar levels and can keep you awake. It is also best to avoid drinking too many fluids before bedtime because this might make you have to go to the bathroom at night. Remember to avoid eating a heavy meal and just keep your bedtime snack light. As you sleep, your digestive process slows down, and too much food in the stomach may cause its contents to reflux into the esophagus, causing heartburn or symptoms of indigestion. • 11. Essay on Sharon Olds The Possessive The Possessive Teenage rebellion is typically portrayed in stories, films, and other genres as a testosterone based phenomenon. There is an overplayed need for one to acknowledge a boy s rebellion against his father, his life direction, the system, in an effort to become a man, or rather an adult. However, rarely is the female addressed in such a scenario. What happens when little girls grow up? Do they rebel? Do they, in a sudden overpowering rush of estrogen, deny what has been taught to them from birth and shed their former youthful façades? Do they turn on their mothers? In Sharon Olds poem, The Possessive, the reader is finally introduced to the female version of the popular coming of age theme as a simple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From here the tone of unease and apprehension often felt before a great battle is set. This is not a haircut. It is a preparation for war. The next image Olds puts into play is that of the vision of her daughter reborn as the enemy. Olds describes the daughter s hair by saying, each strand now cuts/ both ways. The blade of new bangs hangs over her red brown eyes/ like carbon steel. This is not a typical description of hair. Olds specifically compares the young girl s hair to a freshly sharpened weapon. With words such as cuts, blade, and carbon steel, Olds builds up an image of a lethal weapon such as a knife or perhaps sword, weapons both clearly used for battle. Olds further describes the girl s hair by acknowledging that all the little/ spliced ropes are sliced. The line break in the poem which leaves the phrase all the little alone to be followed up by second line describing the sliced hair, adds to Olds image. All the little appears as a memory of the mother of her former daughter, a memory that is quickly destroyed by the second image of those little strands now taking on a threatening sliced form. Final Strategic Recommendation George Simmons Friday, May 4, 2012 International Studies Program Barcelona Professor Fischer Grupo Damm Final Strategic Recommendation Introduction and Summary of Recommendation Grupo Damm, one of the largest beer brewers in Spain, is a strong company in a weak home market. Although many opportunities exist for expansion, the strongest plan for the company to embark on is an aggressive expansion of its business in the United States. This project will give Damm access to a large consumer base with minimal risk due to previous conservative investments in the region. Situation Analysis Grupo Damm s current situation is the third largest beer company in Spain. It is a large player in a market dominated by two other beer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Basis for Recommendation 1. The Spanish beer market is contracting, and trying to win a larger piece of a smaller pie will prove very costly (Appendix 2). As the Spanish recession continues, revenue will decline as less beer is consumed and margins will shrink as consumers buy beer in supermarkets, significantly constraining Damm s profits (Appendix 3). 2. Damm has already entered the U.S. market via a 17% acquisition of U.S. Beverage, a specialty distributor that works mainly with premium imports (Peet). U.S. Beverage has had a successful track record with imports in the past, and this partnership will allow Grupo Damm to circumvent the process of having to find a reliable importer and distributor. 3. The U.S. beer market has been growing, and more specifically, the imported premium beer segment has been growing within the overall market (Appendix 4). Although other markets have been shown to be growing at a higher rate (Group 6, Slide 5), the U.S. market is several times larger at over 208 million barrels sold per year (Jones). Financial Impact of the Recommendation Under a conservative analysis of the project, an expansion plan in America will have a net present value of over $350 million for Grupo Damm (Appendix 5). This project requires minimal capital expenditures because U.S. Beverage has already put much of the groundwork in place. The main expenses Grupo Damm will face under ... • 13. Logarithms During The Scientific Revolution Of The 17th... Though the Scientific Revolution of the 17th century produced many inspiring inventions and discoveries, one of the greatest contributions of the period, at least in the field of mathematics, was the introduction of logarithms. Mathematically, a logarithm is denoted as follows logb(x)=y, where y is the power to which b must be raised in order to produce the answer x. However, simply explained, a logarithm is a quantity representing the power to which a fixed number, the base, must be raised to produce a specific number. Therefore, to give just one computational example, log2(32) = 5 because 25 =32. The term logarithm was derived from the Greek words for ratio and number. In Death of a Salesman, Willy s relationship with his son s allows the author, Arthur Miller, to reveal the conflicts that can result in a father son relationship. Willy s relationship with his older son, Biff differs in conflict from his relationship with his younger son, Happy. Both relationships have their flaws and both relationships have suffered from Willy s inability to teach his son s positive values. Happy, the younger of the two sons, has taken on many of his father s traits. • 16. Symbolism In My Papa s Waltz, By Theodore Roethke In the poem My Papa s Waltz written by Theodore Roethke, the interpretation of the poem depends on the readers` perspective. Some people think that this poem is one of a happy exchange between a father and son. Others believe that it has a hidden message of child abuse. In my point of view, the imagery and language, the symbolism, and tone in My Papas Waltz gave me the impression of the abusive relationship between the father and son, but then later realizing the positive side. After reading the first line of Roethke s piece, My Papas Waltz, I automatically assumed this poem had negative meaning. The first two lines state, The whiskey on your breath Could make a small boy dizzy (Lines 1 2). Meaning The father has been drinking, and not just a little. He s so intoxicated that even the smell of his breath could make a small boy, like his son, feel a bit woozy. This gives a first impression of a father being intoxicated who has the ability to harm the child. For most it is not a great situation when a drunken adult presents himself to a child. This poem could be seen as a depiction of a young boy s experience of abuse from his father. But I hang on like death seems to show a child s frightful feeling from having to face a drunken father. The image in my head here is that of the father and his child waltzing around the kitchen with the boy having to hold on like death. The word death could have been intended to emphasize the helplessness of the child against his drunken ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
