The Running Dream Short Story
Journeys are different for everyone, but the lessons learned can be similar. The Running Dream
written by Wendelin Van Draanen is a nonfiction story about a girl, Jessica, who loves running. She
loses her leg in an accident and has to overcome her amputation and stay strong to be able to run
again. Odysseus is the main character in The Odyssey written by Homer. Odysseus has to leave his
family to fight in the Trojan War and is gone from his wife, Penelope and son, Telemachus. He is gone
from home for 20 years. Odysseus and Jessica each experience a journey because they are both
ambitious to achieve their goals, have a moral compass that leads them to make the right decisions,
and they both persevere in hard times.
Odysseus and Jessica are very ambitious to achieve their goals. Odysseus is gone for 20 years and is
now returning to his son, and wife back in Ithaca. At first Telemachus does not believe that Odysseus
is his father. Telemachus reaction is revealed in the quotation, Then throwing his arms around his
marvel of a father, Telemachus began to weep (Homer 693). Odysseus stays ambitious to get back to
Ithaca to see Telemachus and Penelope. Telemachus is thrilled to see his father. He hasn t seen his
father since he was a baby. When Telemachus enthusiastically embraces his father, it demonstrates
how happy he is to see his father. Odysseus struggles through The Sirens and The Lotus Eaters to
make it home to Penelope and Telemachus. Odysseus is very ambitious to

The Anglo Saxon poems, The Wanderer, The Seafarer, and The Wife s Lament
The Old English, or Anglo Saxon, era of England lasted from about 450 1066 A.D. The tribes from
Germany that conquered Britain in the fifth century carried with them both the Old English language
and a detailed poetic tradition. The tradition included alliteration, stressed and unstressed syllables,
but more importantly, the poetry was usually mournful, reflecting on suffering and loss.1These
sorrowful poems from the Anglo Saxon time period are mimetic to the Anglo Saxons themselves; they
reflect the often burdened and miserable lives and times of the people who created them. The Anglo
Saxon poems, The Wanderer, The Seafarer, and The Wife s Lament, ... Show more content on

The comitatus stressed the loyalty of a thane to his chieftain and treated exile and outlawry as the most
tragic lots that could befall one. This secular sense of loss is keen in The Wanderer. 6 Not only is the
loss of a lord evident in The Wanderer, but in The Seafarer and The Wife s Lament as well.
The poem The Wanderer speaks of a man who has been exiled from his clan, and is now forced to
roam the land alone. Separation from his fellow kinsmen and lord seems to be the worst fate
imaginable. The man speaks of his great loss, remembering the time when he was happy with his
liege,
When friendships are no more. His fortune is exile,
Not gifts of fine gold; a heart that is frozen,
Earth s wisomeness dead. And he dreams of the hall men,
The dealing of treasure, the days of his youth,
When his lord bade welcome to wassail and feast.
But gone is that gladness, and never again
Shall come the loved counsel of comrade and king.
(II. 27 34)
The speaker of The Seafarer is also an outcast sailing the sea in solitude, and he speaks similarly of his
exile from his lord and kinsmen: Wretched and anxious, in the paths of exile/ Lacking dear friends,
hung round by icicles. (II. 14 15) He seems to believe that if he has lost his fellow warriors and lord,

The Struggle for Nuclear Power
Nuke em The struggle for nuclear power has been a problem since the dawn of the nuclear age.
Governments continue to use the threat of a nuclear attack as a deterrent. However, small terrorist
groups may not feel threatened by a nuclear attack due to their mobility. Thus, the question remains;
are nuclear weapons a necessary safety, or a danger. The solution is therefore to observe the pros and
cons of nuclear capabilities, and to look at some precautions that can be taken to help protect people.
The benefits of having nuclear weapons may not be quite as obvious as some of the downfalls of
having such capabilities. The entire purpose of nuclear weapons is to act as a deterrent the countries
possess these weapons but hope to never ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As long as the plug and the cylinder and the plug are separated, nothing happens. Both parts quietly
emit a small amount of radiation, however, neither of the two pieces has enough mass to cause a
serious reaction. Some Uranium atoms are reacting and producing radiation, but there are not any
other atoms that are close enough for a chain reaction to start. However, when the two pieces are
brought together, a violent reaction occurs. This happens because there is such a high density of
Uranium that when one atom reacts it causes another atom to react and this sets off a chain reaction
(Dr. Donald Nye). In a nuclear generator rods of Uranium, that are producing radiation, are inserted
into giant tanks of water, the reaction occurring by the proximity of the Uranium atoms causes the
rods to generate heat, this in turn heats the water producing steam. The steam is the used to push a
turban, or something else to create work, which in turn gives us energy. There are also certain safety
measures put in place in case of an emergency to help keep the Uranium from reaching critical mass.
The fact that the rods are in water is mainly what keeps the explosion from happening and not as much
Uranium is used. If there is an emergency lead panels will drop between the rods preventing the
reaction from continuing to occur and cold water is pumped into the tanks

Where a is the molar absorptivity, b is the path length and c is the concentration of the analyte.
Spectrophotmetry is not only confined within the boundaries of chemistry. Its principles have several
applications in different branches of science. In biochemistry, it can be used to determine enzyme
catalyzed reactions, whereas in clinical application, it is used to examine blood and tissues. This
quantitative method of analysis can also be used in engineering, physics,etc.[2]
METHODOLOGY
The experiment was initially done by preparing standard solutions of different volumes of Cu(II) stock
solution of known concentration including a blank solution composed of ammonia and water. Each
volume of the solution was placed in volumetric flasks, and in each flask, same amount of
concentrated NH3 was added. The same procedures were also done in the preparation of the diluted
unknown Cu(II) solution. Addition of ammonia caused the formation of deeper blue copper ammonia
complex which allowed the spectrophotometer to detect the solution easily due to increase in its
absorbance. The formation of the complex is shown by the following chemical reaction:
Cu2+ + 4NH3 [Cu(NH3)4]2+ (4)
A deficiency in ammonia in the solution would cause the copper ammonia complex to turn into its
hydrated form which would eventually alter the accuracy of the data obtained because of its

The Invisible Man Analysis
The story The Invisible Man is written by Ralph Ellison. The author takes his personal experiences as
an ignored man and creates this character that shows the characteristics of a man whom few people
would stop to acknowledge. This story can be seen as a symbol of an educated black man whose life
has been controlled and oppressed by a white society. Throughout the story one will notice that the
man is nameless. The is because the narrator in The Invisible Man is invisible not only to others but
himself as well because of racism and trying to live up to expectations of others. There are certain
tools that are given to him by outsiders and things he will use that will ultimately develop him into
student and man. The author has written about events that made the invisible man who he was. It is
important to notice that the invisible man has been searching for his identity the whole time and will
later discover that his identity is in those things he has always had.
This story also uses appeal of pathetic to grab the reader s attention. Throughout the story the author,
Ralph Ellison, struggles to attempt to uncover the invisible man s identity that is buried beneath
oppression. It is important to understand that the invisible man is an African American male who sates
that he is only looked down on because of his skin color (Ellison). Ralph Ellison goes in detail by
showing us how lies can be seen as an obstacle to anyone s journey of finding himself and his true
identity. These obstacles are expressed in Ralph Ellison s usage of symbols and imagery portrays those
obstacles. The man is faced with these obstacles of deception in his ability to make his own life, but
instead is confined to live the life in white men s society. The purpose calls for action to the public to
open their eyes to realize that racism is a problem that will not go away; it is something that must be
forced to an end whereby men are willing to be themselves in the process.
In the story, the narrator has set out to search for his true identity, but this idea of why he is blind to
the world leads him to become blind in the process. I believe that it is important to focus on the
significance of the man s living situation. The invisible man lives

Bottom of Form
Correct :
To increase revenue, firms look to increase price or quantity, as price multiplied by quantity equals
total revenue. Purely competitive firms can sell as much as they want at the market price. Adding
additional units of the product does not result in a change in the market price. Therefore, since purely
competitive firms do not influence price, they increase total revenue by increasing quantity.

Immediacy In Therapeutic Relationships
Therefore, it could be a more accurate portrayal of their interactions with other compared to how the
client perceive themselves to interact with others and what they say to the therapist. Immediacy can be
used to address and solve problems that come up in the context of the therapeutic relationship. For
example, if a client comes into therapy and acts very hostile towards the therapist, the therapist can
use immediacy and address how the client s behavior is affecting them. This could highlight others
behaviors in the client s life and foster the growth of the therapeutic relationship. If problems in the
therapeutic relationships are not addressed, the relationship can be negatively affected. Kasper et al.

Gays in the Media

Bisexual. Gay. Lesbian. These are all words that in today s society are becoming more and more
common to hear. Although just a few years ago hearing these words might have shocked some and
angered many, they are becoming a part of today s norm. People are broadening their views on
sexuality and the possibilities open to them. Being bisexual, gay, or lesbian is slowly becoming
accepted. On television a few years ago, a comedic sitcom Ellen attempted to make gays even more
accepted by casting the main character as a gay woman. Sadly, Ellen failed because viewers weren t

Will and Grace may be appealing to the viewer if he/she finds the messages of the show to be
challenging the old cultural belief that being gay is not accepted by most in America s society. It is the
first show to have main characters that are gay that is widely watched and accepted. Will is portrayed
as the opposite of what society may find to be stereotypical of a gay man. Will does not speak with a
lisp, he does not use flashy hand gestures, nor does he even appear to be gay. Rather, he seems to be
an average character on a sitcom. Will also is shown to be a fairly successful lawyer, a respected job
title. Throughout the show, Will is never made fun of for being gay, nor treated differently because of
it. His sexuality is not emphasized and this sends the message to viewers that being gay is normal and
that one should not be treated any differently because of it. This in turn makes gays more accepted
overall (surprisingly, since the media is normally considered demanding and unforgiving). Will and
Grace strongly challenges the old cultural belief by a putting a respectable gay man on a widely
accepted series for the first time.
Will and Grace may also have a negative effect on viewers because, although it challenges the cultural
belief that gays are not accepted by most in society, it still weakens

Health Disparities Within Dekalb County
Introduction The purpose of this paper is to provide insight on health disparities seen within DeKalb
County. The residents of DeKalb County are diverse in race, ethnicity, and income. Since the county is
so diverse there are many health disparities seen amongst its residents. Health disparities occur within
a county when one group of a population has noticeably better or worse health than another group
within the same population. These groups of people can differ by income, education, sex, race,
location, and even sexual orientation. This Paper will discuss the health disparities that exist within
DeKalb County, and explain why these disparities exist from a historical, political and social aspect.
Furthermore, this paper will give background information on health outcomes from national, state, and
local epidemiological perspective in order to support the claims that disparities actually exist within
this county.
Background
The history of Georgia and its reflection on the state impacts the health and well being of its
communities today as it relates to cultures and institutions. The population of African Americans is
higher in Georgia than in the United States because of the transatlantic slave trade, which brought an
abundance of African Americans to the state by force. The history of slavery still impacts African
Americans today and causes many health disparities that can be seen around the world not only in
Georgia. The obvious and tragic impact of health

The Pros And Cons Of Usucapio Laws
In Roman law, usucapio laws allowed someone who was in possession of a good without title to
become the lawful proprietor if the original owner didn t show up after some time (one or two years),
unless the good was obtained illegally (by theft or force). Stemming from Roman law and its
successor, the Napoleonic Code, adopted as the basis of law in France, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg,
Portugal, Spain, and also, in part, by the Netherlands and Germany, adverse possession generally
recognizes two time periods for the acquisition of property: 30 years and some lesser time period,

must not be covert. It should be clear to any normal person who inspects the property that someone is
using the property in sort reasonable fashion. In other words, if the titled owner were to visit the

the property within a fence. A landowner is not required, however, to have actual knowledge of the
occupation. The person occupying the land must act as the owner by engaging in acts consistent with
the property s purpose. Such acts must generally be observed by others to be typical of that expected

Hemlock Wooly Adelgid
Why is our state tree (the Eastern Hemlock) in trouble?
The Eastern Hemlock is being attacked by the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid. This invasive aphid like
insect kills Hemlock by feeding on their starch reserves and injecting a toxin into them that causes
their needles to drop more quickly. According to the article Rehabilitation Guidelines for Hemlock
Stands, Adelgids cause damage by depleting the Hemlock s starch reserves. When the starch reserves
are depleted, the tree doesn t have enough energy to grow. The Hemlock Wooly Adelgid s toxin causes
needles to fall off the tree faster, as shown in the article Forest Health Fact Sheet . With less needles to

The topic is relevant to the lecture because we discussed brain activity in living and dead things, and
what autism stems from. The writer asks the question of what causes autism, eventually stating that
having a greater cognitive flexibility correlates with acquiring better reading skills as a child, which

The Cross And The Lynching Tree Chapter Summary
The Cross and the Lynching Tree, written by James Cone, is an emotionally charged book that
criticizes the church and the black community within America. The first words of chapter one, they
put him to death by hanging him on the tree, [ ] have a strong first impression to the reader,
immediately stating the issue at hand. The act of lynching began throughout the Roman Empire for
rebels and insurrectionists where it became a public spectacle and humiliation. It was said in
Deuteronomy 21:23, this is punishment of being hung from a tree that was seen as a curse from God. [

What Are The Advantages Of Free Trade
BENEFITS OF FREE TRADE
The benefits of free trade include:
1. The Theory of Comparative Advantage
This explains that by specializing in goods where countries have a lower opportunity cost, there can be
an increase in economic welfare for all countries. Free trade enables countries to specialize in those
goods where they have a comparative advantage.
2. Reducing Tariff barriers leads to trade creation
Trade creation occurs when consumption switches from high cost producers to low cost producers.

3. Competition induced under free trade is unfair and unhealthy. Backward countries cannot compete

4. Gains of trade are not equally distributed under free trade due to unequal state of development of
different countries.

Use Of Humor And Its Effect On Society
Some advertisements use humor to make the viewers want to rematch the advertisements and enjoy it
as it gives off positive feelings. In other occasions, ads like Spotify create a negative atmosphere to
provoke the person to buy a Spotify membership since Spotify repeats the same advertisement every
thirty minutes of free music that is played. These two types of techniques are useful and effective
since they drill the commercial s purpose in the individual s mind even though they might receive
different feedbacks. Another technique that commercials use is bandwagon to sell their products.
Snapchat and Instagram created a false life or society because most users now just use it to boast
about their accomplishments and display their somewhat unrealistic capacities. Some users utilize it to
show off their lifestyles, others use it to display the items that they purchased to show a false richness
or life. Their admirable followers become loyal to them or disloyal to them, creating a rivalry between
the individuals. As a result, their social relationships and connections causes the followers to purchase
the same products as their role models or causes them to become competitive and want to purchase

Disadvantages Of Ant Colony Optimization
Abstract In this paper an efficient hybrid optimization approach is used to solve the optimal power
flow problem. In the proposed approach particle swarm optimization along with ant colony
optimization is used for setting of control variables for optimal power flow problem. The proposed
approach is tested and examined in standard IEEE 30 bus test system. The various objective functions
involved are fuel cost minimization, voltage profile improvement and transmission loss reduction.
This proposed approach overcomes the disadvantages of ant colony optimization such as premature
convergence and stagnating output. Keywords voltage stability; fuel cost; loss; optimal power flow;
optimization ;PSO;ACO.

ANT COLONY OPTIMIZATION Ant colony optimization (ACO) is an evolutionary and adaptive
algorithm that was introduced by Marco Dorigo in 1992.This ant colony optimization algorithm is
inspired by behavior of real ant colonies. The ant when searching food move in random direction.Once
the ant finds the food source,it evaluates the quantity and quality of food.It takes certain amount of
food to the nest.During this process, the ant deposits a chemical called pheromone as a trail on the
ground during the return path. The quantity of pheromone deposited is based on the quantity and
quality of the food available.HEnce this would guide other ants towards the food providing an indirect
communication. The pheromone trails allows the ants to identify the shortest path between the ant nest
and the food source. This above technique is used for optimization

San Diego Marketing Campaign Essay
In the homework assignment last week, I took on the marketing campaign for a Mechanics shop in
San Diego area. The majority of these advertisement will be done on buses and locals channels to

Effect Of The Amount Of Hand Sanitizer In Petri Dish
Conclusion The hypothesis, If the amount of hand sanitizer in the Petri dish increases, then the radish
germination will decrease, was supported by the data. With no drops of hand sanitizer on the radish
seeds, the germination of the seeds was 100%. Then, with 1 drop of hand sanitizer in the dish, 60% of
the radish seeds germinated. The radish seeds with with 3 drops of hand sanitizer only germinated
40%. The germination decreased 40% from dish 1 to dish 2, and then another 20% from dish 2 to dish

Descartes, Hume and Skepticism Essay
Descartes, Hume and Skepticism Descartes is responsible for the skepticism that has been labeled
Cartesian doubt. Hume critiques this skepticism in his Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding.
After his discussion of Cartesian doubt, he offers a different type of skepticism that he considers as
being more effective philosophically. Is Hume right in his characterization of Cartesian doubt and is
the skepticism he offers better? Descartes introduced the idea of universal doubt to philosophy. If there
is even a slight case for doubting something, then it should be doubted. His skepticism was used to
find a basis for knowledge and his aim was to establish truths. He relayed this universal doubt to all
human understanding. Not only does it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cartesian doubt does not allow us to advance. We would be in a constant state of doubting. How
would one lay a foundation of truths if it is possible to doubt all? No reasoning could ever bring us to
a state of assurance and conviction upon any subject (Hume Section XII part 1). Hume does give some
credit to this method of skepticism. It can be useful in philosophy when used reasonably. A degree of
doubt should escort every person who reasons. This doubt gets rid of prejudices in judgments and
helps rid closed mindedness brought about by education. It allows philosophy to be brought down to
basic principles and gives a foundation to slowly build upon. This slow progress allows a review of
thoughts and establishes sure steps to truths. Hume s skepticism is limiting but not as limiting as
Cartesian doubt. Hume calls this mitigated skepticism. Another species of mitigated skepticism which
may be of advantage to man kind is the limitation of our enquiries to such subjects as are best
adapted to the narrow capacity of human understanding (Section XII part. 3). We should direct our
focus and studies to experiences of everyday life and to common occurrences. Extraordinary or remote
ideas and thoughts should be left to the imaginations of people of the arts. By looking at the natural
powers of the mind one can find what should be the objects of enquiry and study. Hume writes that are
two enquiries that man

Francisco Goya Research Paper
The French Revolution, which was a critical period of reformation, was an era in which war happened
frequently. Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes was an important artist of that time, who created many
artwork that portrayed wars. In the analysis of his masterpieces, people can find his disappointment in
how people pursue freedom, their ignorance, and the brutality of the wars. Freedom was one of the
main ideas in French Revolution, but in Goya s painting, he was disappointed in how the society
fought for it. In his artwork, he showed the stupidity of how people pursued freedom during that
period. In The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters (1797 1798), Goya used the mocking owls and
bats to imply folly and ignorance, while the lynx stayed alert against the monsters of greed and

In The Disasters of War (1810 1820), he showed how brutal the French were in the invasion of Spain.
In the early plates of the series, Goya depicted the dead and injured are carried away, soldiers strip
corpses, which are then thrown into a common grave in the Plate 18 Bury them and keep quiet
(Tomlinson 1994, p.191). This picture wholly described how the war looked in Spain during that time:
how people were killed and then buried like it was a normal scenario. The ruthlessness of the French
also sent out another message that beauty is not only destroyed, but grotesquely ravaged to attest the
end of any faith in an ideal (p.193). In the paintings, people lost their dignity, and there are no heroes
countless unidentified victims in the picture, which indicate that humanity is only ideal in the
Revolution (p.202). The hand gestures in the paintings are in motion, which emphasized the
instantaneity of the climax. For example, in the painting, the soldiers are holding arms and already

Stereotypes In Twelfth Night
William Shakespeare s Twelfth Night is a comedy about Viola, a woman who washes up in Illyria and
then assumes the role of a man in order to be closer to Orsino, the man she wants to marry. It involves
multiple cases of mistaken identities and deception. The stereotypical role of the sexes and gender also
have a significant impact in the play. Ultimately it provides the opportunity to disrupt the fixed
polarities upon which the normative Elizabethan society is based. This essay will discuss Belsey s
statement that the closing of the play voids the transgressive gaps in sexual stereotypes. This will be
done by considering the historical context and the sexual norms of the time and to what extent they are
transgressed in Twelfth Night.

Charles is of opinion that, the representation of homoerotic attraction in Twelfth Night functions rather
as a means of dramatizing the socially constructed basis of a sexuality that is determined by gender
identity (Charles 1997:122). As mentioned above, homosexuality was not acceptable in the
Elizabethan society for the most part. It was even considered as sodomy. Before the twins, Viola and
Sebastian, are married to heterosexual partners, both are involved in some form of homosexual
relationship. While Oliva seems to be unaware of Cesario/Viola s true sex, the hint at the possibility of
homoeroticism through dramatic irony is already enough to disrupt the stereotypical gender system.
After Malvolio presents Viola/Cesario with Olivia s ring, Cesarios says, I am the man; if it be so, as
tis,/Poor lady, she were better love a dream (Shakespeare 2004:84). Charles explains the best stating
that dramatic irony tells us Oliva s true hidden passion is for the female character (Charles 1997:133).

Analysis Of Ayer s Moral Responsibility
Ayer s problem with holding one morally responsible for their actions when caused deterministically
is based on the fact the determinists believe that all decisions are based on casual laws which say that
one s destiny is already formed and one can not change the outcome. This gives people the illusion of
free will. The believe they can decide between say two cars, A or B, but in fact based on casual laws
they were determined, even before birth, to choose car A. Ayres states that with situations like this we
can not hold them morally responsible for their choosing of car A as it was not their choice to begin
with. According to Ayer the problem with holding someone responsible for accidental errors is that
they simply could not control the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I agree with Ayer that his first solution lead to a dead end when trying to disprove determinism. It only
made sense that going back to ones past and using previous choices made only gave the same results
to the choice being made at that present moment. Ayer did an excellent job with his second solution
and eliminating causation as an argument against free will and instead replacing it with constraints.
Once the term constraint was implemented it all began to make sense. Of course your free will is
revoked once somebody puts you into a situation where you are forced to do an action that you
normally would not have done. When he finishes by implementing his new solution of the three
conditions for what must happen in order for you to have free will he describes everything we
consider when describing free will. His only mistake is to allow somebody with a mental disorder
such as kleptomania to be excused from free will. While they may not be able to stop them selves
from stealing they are surely not making the choice to seek out help for their disorder. This is why I do
not feel that mental disorders should fall under the absences of free will. In all we do have free will
and one choice does determine other choices we must make throughout our lives. Those choices are
not determined by the universe because the events that happen in our lives are spontaneous and as I

Frontier Nursing University
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of restrictive contraceptive legislation on
unintended teenage pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy has declined steadily over the past 40 years,
however in the past decade the rate of pregnancy among adolescents is rising. Restrictive
contraceptive legislation such as abstinence only education, mandatory waiting periods, parental
notification laws, or Medicaid funding restrictions could all play a part in the increase of pregnancy in
teenagers. One study found funding for abstinence only education programs were linked to increased
birth rates among black and white adolescents (Yang Gaydos, 2010). Another study found restrictive
contraceptive legislation resulted in higher unintended pregnancy rates among adolescents. The
implication of this review is state and federal policies should focus on improving education regarding
contraception use and forming policies which improve access to abortion.

Americans males who are 25 years of age or older have at least a high school diploma, but just 34% of

The Columbine Tragedy
The student sat at her desk on Monday morning in English class, discussing the details of the weekend
with her best friend. The bell rang at 8:45 a.m. and her teacher started taking attendance. It was a new
week with so many things to accomplish. The teacher finished the morning details by completing
lunch count. She then asked her pupils to quit visiting, and to open their literature books and begin
reading. All of a sudden a sound rings through the hall, but it is not an ordinary school bell. It is loud
and short. It was followed by several more blasts. These blasts were followed by echoes of yelling.
High pitched shrieks could be heard throughout the classroom and possibly throughout the entire
school. A look of terror was seen on the teacher s face. She was trembling as she tried to make sense
of the blasts the students had just heard. She instructed the class to find shelter in the cabinets and

the participants when they started to feel bad after professor Jane Elliot was saying to them. At one
point in the film the participants actually believed that they were wordless and stupid and that s where
the thoughts shifted. The resistances of the adult participants happened because they did not want to
believe that were bad and racisms. Personally, I was expecting that reaction from them since we tend
to see ourselves most of the time as good people and not as bad people. I believe that they struggle
with complying with the rules/expectations because it is something new for them. As society, when we

Hiv And The World Health Organization Essay
HIV/AIDS is an acronym that has become synonymous with the weakening of the human immunity
system and has become a constant source of anguish for the infected and their families. According to
the Center for Disease Control, more than 1.2 million people in the US are living with HIV. What may
be worrying is that 1 in 8 persons are unaware of their positive status. Despite the number of new HIV
diagnoses has decreasing by 19% between 2005 and 2014, there is still a lot of unsightly statistics that
paint a picture of uncertainty regarding its eradication. HIV is incurable, the only relief comes in the
form of ARVs which help the body adapt to the weakened immune system. Globally, the World Health
Organization puts the numbers at over 100 million people and most of them in developing countries. A
terrible scourge indeed and a relevant disease to analyze closely.

Comparing Bradstreet, Edward Taylor, And Jonathan Edwards
Puritans believed in hard work and pleasing God. Therefore in this essay I will be comparing and
contrasting three Puritan writings that were written by Anne Bradstreet, Edward Taylor, and Jonathan
Edwards. Their writings express perspectives of Puritan beliefs, however the differences in the
writings show the variations between the purpose of their writings, the language, and the tone. In this
essay I will first look at Bradstreet s poem, second I ll review Taylor s poem, third I will analyze
Edward s sermon, and finally I will state the similarities between the three.
Bradstreet wrote her poems for the sole purpose to pass time, and she had no intention to have them
published. Her poems also differ from the other two author s writings because her poems were stolen
and published by her brother in law without her consent. Her writing style is different form the other
two because she uses an inversed writing style. For example instead of saying I was wakened with a

Hell. The sermon contained a lot more dark and menacing language, for instance he used words like,
wrath, Hell, fire, and misery. Edwards s sermon had a tone that was intimidating but in the last little

The creatives of an organization are often the group that stands out and may be misunderstood. How
are creatives perceived in your company? What is the nature of the creative type, and how can they
best be managed for the purposes of achieving Innovation? First, let s describe what creatives are like.
Highly charged creative types may act out or resist when they feel restricted by the confinement of
corporate culture. Some creatives may prefer to work alone, in the refuge of their own private work
space until they emerge with an Aha! moment or solution to a vexing problem. In meetings and NPD
ideation sessions, true creatives are the ones that are not afraid to ask the most challenging, thought
provoking questions to dive head first into a problem. They do it out of sheer intellectual curiosity and
the thrill of probing a conundrum that is where they work best. It is that kind of curiosity that leads to
Innovation for a business, and in turn brings profitable growth and shareholder value for the company.

The Impact Of Technology On Evolution Of Knowledge
There are many false claims in the science world that goes back and forth on their ideas and
sometimes it s the public s choice to decide which fact is reliable. With research, it is shown that
people believed what others thought were true without needing evidence to back up the claim. With
new technology it became easier for the people to judge which claim is accurate due to the new
science findings that supports that specific subject claim. Scientific facts are explained by evidence
proven by multiple experiments that are tested by many other scientists. If a scientific claim is proven
to be true, why is it that in some cases after years of studying the fact are re evaluated and proven to
be false? To what extent does development of technology play a role in the evolution of knowledge?
How do we know what scientific fact is reliable?
When a new scientific theory or claim is made, the scientist tries to confirm it is the truth by using
new technology to test out their idea. Some of the time, their old claim is outdated or falsified and they
must admit they were wrong. Remember before 2006 people thought Pluto was the 9th planet from the
sun? International Astronomical Union changed the status of Pluto by reclassifying as a dwarf planet
because it did not meet the criteria of a planet. More significant claims have been made and many
people are aware of some well known superseded scientific theories and wonder why they were
believed to be true in the first place.

Skywalker Tragic Hero
As we progressed through this year of sophomore english, we encountered many tragic heroes.
Grendel, Victor Frankenstein, Beowulf and now Macbeth and Walter White. A tragic hero is one who
has heroic qualities but all goes to waste as the hero experiences downfall, suffering or death. The
tragic hero I am analysing is Anakin Skywalker; more prominently known as Darth Vader. This is my
choice because he was born with the skills to become a jedi master but with the temptations of Darth
Sidious, used his powers incorrectly and become the most well known villain in the Star Wars
universe.
When the first trilogy of Stars Wars films were released, Darth Vader was seen as the relentless sith
lord who would do anything is his power to destroy the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anakin and Obi Wan fight Count Dooku but Obi Wan gets knocked out by falling debris. Anakin
fights Dooku on his own and unarms him; making Dooku fall to his knees. The jedi rule is to never
kill an unarmed prisoner but by the manipulation of Chancellor Palpatine, he convinces Anakin to do
it. When Anakin returns to with an injured Obi Wan and Palpatine, his is greeted by his wife Padme
and she tells him she is pregnant. Anakin is excited about the news but also nervous that the Jedi
council will find out and he will be excommunicated. It is in the Jedi rules that Jedi can not marry but
Anakin did not follow. Anakin experiences daily nightmares of Padme dying at childbirth and seeks
help. Palpatine consoles him and makes him a representative to his council and offers a way to save
Padme if is willing to listen. Palpatine tells Anakin of a Sith Lord who had the ability to save others
from death and Anakin gets the impression that Palpatine is asking him to learn the Dark side and that
Palpatine is the Sith Lord they have been looking for all along. Anakin informs Mace Windu of this
news and confronts Palpatine. Mace Windu has Palpatine cornered and Anakin arrives and must
choose a side. By the fear of his wife s death, Anakin sides with Palpatine and kills Mace Windu.
Anakin disobeyes another Jedi rule, which is to not

The Citizen On The Rainy River Essay
EleXis Palmer

Ap Lang and Comp 5
Thesis Essay
What is the relationship between the citizen and the state? We are not citizens but subjects, being
subjected to the ruling of one power. We claim that we despise the government and that the
government is out to get us, but if you think of what our society would be without a government we
would be in total chaos. Sometimes we try to free ourselves from the state, and run, just as Tim O
Brien did in On the Rainy River. O Brien didn t want to be drafted out to a war in which he didn t
believe in, so instead he dropped his life and ran away; just ran away from facing the government. My
conscience told me to run, but some irrational and powerful force was ... Show more content on

934) Goldsmith strongly believes that we are citizens of the world and that we only have as much
power as we give to ourselves. The government wouldn t house nearly as much power as it does if we
didn t give it such authority. We, as citizens are responsible for the power the government is capable
of. The state relies on this allegiance by the citizen. It s just like the reliance between the press and the
government. The press too is made up solely of citizens. The press influences what the public thinks
about that government by the stories and editorials that they publish, and the government influences
what the press publishes by giving out press releases. They depend on each other in a complex
manner. The state has control over citizens but no real connection with these citizens. The majority
rule cannot determine justice. Thoreau had said in On the Duty of Civil Disobedience , I think that we
should be men first, and subjects afterwards. (Thoreau pg.

Langston Hughes Salvation Summary
Group Pressure Save me Please! The hearts cry of a young boy who is in desperate need. Referring to
Langston Hughes article Salvation . A lesson this article teaches about group pressure, even with good
intentions, getting what the group wants, does not always meet the individual needs. This group has
good intentions, Langston tells us about the group and the event happening, There was a big revival at
my Auntie Reed s church. Every night for weeks there had been much preaching, singing, praying,
and shouting, and some very hardened sinners had been brought to Christ, and the membership of the
church had grown by leaps and bounds (78 79).
The church members seemed to have good intentions by having this revival at the church. They even

They want everyone that is attending their revival to receive salvation from Jesus. They focus on the
children and wants all of them to be saved, having a special meeting just for children (79). The church
wants the children to be saved so much. The preacher preaches a wonderful sermon, shouts, cries,
scares children with dire pictures of hell, and then sang a song (79). In doing all of this, the preacher
succeeded in getting responses from some of the children for salvation. Although some is not enough,
for these members they want all of the children to be saved and start to put on the group pressure.
They do this by crowding the children gathering around, praying, singing and crying by them (79).
This method seems to be working the kids are getting up one by one till Langston is left alone (79).
Now the group is really stepping up the pressure, everyone is praying, singing and crying for Langston
s salvation. The preacher himself asked Auntie Reed for Langston s name so he can call him out
personally. Langston, why don t you come? Why don t you come and be saved? Oh, Lamb of God!
Why don t you come

The War Of Canada During The Great War
At the end of the Great War, Canada plunged into economic darkness; the once powerful war industry
was no longer needed and factories shut down all over the country, causing unemployment for
civilians and veterans alike to skyrocket. This reflected on the military of Canada; vehicles that were
destroyed were not replaced; the number of permanent forces and militia barely grew. Canada s
military saw a period of inactivity that would even cause land, sea and air components merged as a
singular entity due to the Great Depression s effect on the military budget. However, the peace was not
to last. As Adolf Hitler s Germany appeared and showed the world its intentions, nations gathered and
Canada committed an important act demonstrating its independence as a nation; Canada declared war.
Viewed for a long time as a British colony even after Confederation, Canada took a stand against a
virtually universally recognized evil alongside the major powers of the world at the time. Canada s
participation in conflicts in many different operations throughout WWII demonstrated its military
effectiveness, but its important role in the D Day landings defined Canada s military competency
through the crucial Operation Overlord, dubbed by some as the beginning of the end of the Second
World War, in Normandy. Canada s role in Operation Overlord in Normandy solidified the military
structure that is our modern military and sculpted the image of an independent nation through Canada
s military

The Anglo Saxon poems, The Wanderer, The Seafarer, and The Wife s Lament The Old English, or Anglo Saxon, era of England lasted from about 450 1066 A.D. The tribes from Germany that conquered Britain in the fifth century carried with them both the Old English language and a detailed poetic tradition. The tradition included alliteration, stressed and unstressed syllables, but more importantly, the poetry was usually mournful, reflecting on suffering and loss.1These sorrowful poems from the Anglo Saxon time period are mimetic to the Anglo Saxons themselves; they reflect the often burdened and miserable lives and times of the people who created them. The comitatus stressed the loyalty of a thane to his chieftain and treated exile and outlawry as the most tragic lots that could befall one. This secular sense of loss is keen in The Wanderer. 6 Not only is the loss of a lord evident in The Wanderer, but in The Seafarer and The Wife s Lament as well. The poem The Wanderer speaks of a man who has been exiled from his clan, and is now forced to roam the land alone. Separation from his fellow kinsmen and lord seems to be the worst fate imaginable. The man speaks of his great loss, remembering the time when he was happy with his liege, When friendships are no more. His fortune is exile, Not gifts of fine gold; a heart that is frozen, Earth s wisomeness dead. And he dreams of the hall men, The dealing of treasure, the days of his youth, When his lord bade welcome to wassail and feast. But gone is that gladness, and never again Shall come the loved counsel of comrade and king. Governments continue to use the threat of a nuclear attack as a deterrent. However, small terrorist groups may not feel threatened by a nuclear attack due to their mobility. Thus, the question remains; are nuclear weapons a necessary safety, or a danger. The solution is therefore to observe the pros and cons of nuclear capabilities, and to look at some precautions that can be taken to help protect people. The benefits of having nuclear weapons may not be quite as obvious as some of the downfalls of having such capabilities. As long as the plug and the cylinder and the plug are separated, nothing happens. Both parts quietly emit a small amount of radiation, however, neither of the two pieces has enough mass to cause a serious reaction. Some Uranium atoms are reacting and producing radiation, but there are not any other atoms that are close enough for a chain reaction to start. However, when the two pieces are brought together, a violent reaction occurs. This happens because there is such a high density of Uranium that when one atom reacts it causes another atom to react and this sets off a chain reaction (Dr. Donald Nye). In a nuclear generator rods of Uranium, that are producing radiation, are inserted into giant tanks of water, the reaction occurring by the proximity of the Uranium atoms causes the rods to generate heat, this in turn heats the water producing steam. The steam is the used to push a turban, or something else to create work, which in turn gives us energy. There are also certain safety measures put in place in case of an emergency to help keep the Uranium from reaching critical mass. The fact that the rods are in water is mainly what keeps the explosion from happening and not as much Uranium is used. If there is an emergency lead panels will drop between the rods preventing the reaction from continuing to occur and cold water is pumped into the tanks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Each volume of the solution was placed in volumetric flasks, and in each flask, same amount of concentrated NH3 was added. The same procedures were also done in the preparation of the diluted unknown Cu(II) solution. Addition of ammonia caused the formation of deeper blue copper ammonia complex which allowed the spectrophotometer to detect the solution easily due to increase in its absorbance. The formation of the complex is shown by the following chemical reaction: Cu2+ + 4NH3 [Cu(NH3)4]2+ (4) A deficiency in ammonia in the solution would cause the copper ammonia complex to turn into its hydrated form which would eventually alter the accuracy of the data obtained because of its

The author takes his personal experiences as an ignored man and creates this character that shows the characteristics of a man whom few people would stop to acknowledge. This story can be seen as a symbol of an educated black man whose life has been controlled and oppressed by a white society. Throughout the story one will notice that the man is nameless. The is because the narrator in The Invisible Man is invisible not only to others but himself as well because of racism and trying to live up to expectations of others. There are certain tools that are given to him by outsiders and things he will use that will ultimately develop him into student and man. The author has written about events that made the invisible man who he was. It is important to notice that the invisible man has been searching for his identity the whole time and will later discover that his identity is in those things he has always had. This story also uses appeal of pathetic to grab the reader s attention. Throughout the story the author, Ralph Ellison, struggles to attempt to uncover the invisible man s identity that is buried beneath oppression. It is important to understand that the invisible man is an African American male who sates that he is only looked down on because of his skin color (Ellison). Ralph Ellison goes in detail by showing us how lies can be seen as an obstacle to anyone s journey of finding himself and his true identity. These obstacles are expressed in Ralph Ellison s usage of symbols and imagery portrays those obstacles. The man is faced with these obstacles of deception in his ability to make his own life, but instead is confined to live the life in white men s society. The purpose calls for action to the public to open their eyes to realize that racism is a problem that will not go away; it is something that must be forced to an end whereby men are willing to be themselves in the process. In the story, the narrator has set out to search for his true identity, but this idea of why he is blind to the world leads him to become blind in the process. • 25. Descartes, Hume and Skepticism Essay Descartes, Hume and Skepticism Descartes is responsible for the skepticism that has been labeled Cartesian doubt. Hume critiques this skepticism in his Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding. After his discussion of Cartesian doubt, he offers a different type of skepticism that he considers as being more effective philosophically. Is Hume right in his characterization of Cartesian doubt and is the skepticism he offers better? Descartes introduced the idea of universal doubt to philosophy. If there is even a slight case for doubting something, then it should be doubted. His skepticism was used to find a basis for knowledge and his aim was to establish truths. We would be in a constant state of doubting. How would one lay a foundation of truths if it is possible to doubt all? No reasoning could ever bring us to a state of assurance and conviction upon any subject (Hume Section XII part 1). Hume does give some credit to this method of skepticism. It can be useful in philosophy when used reasonably. A degree of doubt should escort every person who reasons. This doubt gets rid of prejudices in judgments and helps rid closed mindedness brought about by education. It allows philosophy to be brought down to basic principles and gives a foundation to slowly build upon. This slow progress allows a review of thoughts and establishes sure steps to truths. Hume s skepticism is limiting but not as limiting as Cartesian doubt. Hume calls this mitigated skepticism. Another species of mitigated skepticism which may be of advantage to man kind is the limitation of our enquiries to such subjects as are best adapted to the narrow capacity of human understanding (Section XII part. 3). We should direct our focus and studies to experiences of everyday life and to common occurrences. Extraordinary or remote ideas and thoughts should be left to the imaginations of people of the arts. By looking at the natural powers of the mind one can find what should be the objects of enquiry and study. Hume writes that are two enquiries that man ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes was an important artist of that time, who created many artwork that portrayed wars. In the analysis of his masterpieces, people can find his disappointment in how people pursue freedom, their ignorance, and the brutality of the wars. Freedom was one of the main ideas in French Revolution, but in Goya s painting, he was disappointed in how the society fought for it. In the early plates of the series, Goya depicted the dead and injured are carried away, soldiers strip corpses, which are then thrown into a common grave in the Plate 18 Bury them and keep quiet (Tomlinson 1994, p.191). This picture wholly described how the war looked in Spain during that time: how people were killed and then buried like it was a normal scenario. The ruthlessness of the French also sent out another message that beauty is not only destroyed, but grotesquely ravaged to attest the end of any faith in an ideal (p.193). In the paintings, people lost their dignity, and there are no heroes countless unidentified victims in the picture, which indicate that humanity is only ideal in the Revolution (p.202). Before the twins, Viola and Sebastian, are married to heterosexual partners, both are involved in some form of homosexual relationship. While Oliva seems to be unaware of Cesario/Viola s true sex, the hint at the possibility of homoeroticism through dramatic irony is already enough to disrupt the stereotypical gender system. I agree with Ayer that his first solution lead to a dead end when trying to disprove determinism. It only made sense that going back to ones past and using previous choices made only gave the same results to the choice being made at that present moment. Ayer did an excellent job with his second solution and eliminating causation as an argument against free will and instead replacing it with constraints. Once the term constraint was implemented it all began to make sense. Of course your free will is revoked once somebody puts you into a situation where you are forced to do an action that you normally would not have done. When he finishes by implementing his new solution of the three conditions for what must happen in order for you to have free will he describes everything we consider when describing free will. His only mistake is to allow somebody with a mental disorder such as kleptomania to be excused from free will. While they may not be able to stop them selves from stealing they are surely not making the choice to seek out help for their disorder. This is why I do not feel that mental disorders should fall under the absences of free will. In all we do have free will and one choice does determine other choices we must make throughout our lives. Teenage pregnancy has declined steadily over the past 40 years, however in the past decade the rate of pregnancy among adolescents is rising. Restrictive contraceptive legislation such as abstinence only education, mandatory waiting periods, parental notification laws, or Medicaid funding restrictions could all play a part in the increase of pregnancy in teenagers. We claim that we despise the government and that the government is out to get us, but if you think of what our society would be without a government we would be in total chaos. O Brien didn t want to be drafted out to a war in which he didn t believe in, so instead he dropped his life and ran away; just ran away from facing the government. The government wouldn t house nearly as much power as it does if we didn t give it such authority. We, as citizens are responsible for the power the government is capable of. The state relies on this allegiance by the citizen. It s just like the reliance between the press and the government. The press too is made up solely of citizens. The press influences what the public thinks about that government by the stories and editorials that they publish, and the government influences what the press publishes by giving out press releases. Canada s role in Operation Overlord in Normandy solidified the military structure that is our modern military and sculpted the image of an independent nation through Canada s military ...
