In today s society both male and female are expected to play specific gender roles. In Canada
women and men are thought of as equal, having the same rights to respect, autonomy, and
independence (Bonvillain and Miller 2013: 39). The CBSA ignored this right when the agency
allowed religious travellers to avoid female guards. Although men and women may have different
roles in their households and communities, their work and activities are equally valued and
socially rewarded (Bonvillain and Miller 2013: 39). These roles play an important part in shaping
the way individuals think about others in society. The CBSA should not have approved the request
of the religious travelers as it disvalued the female guards rights by promoting genderinequality and
male dominance.
The approval of the males request raises the gender issue of gender inequality. Specifically
because of their gender, the female guards could not perform their regular duties as a CBSA
officer. Women and men should be thought of as equal by having the same rights to respect,

fictional story of all time. The original script, discovered on 12 clay tablets in ancient Sumeria,
covers the adventures of a real historical figure (Ralph): the Sumarian King of Uruk, who lived
sometime between the years 2750 and 2500 B.C. (Epic) The adventures of Gilgamesh were so
popular among the people of that era (the earliest written versions of the story dating to 2000 B.C.)
that after centuries of being told and retold, they soon became pure fiction. These fictional stories,
eventually becoming beliefs that people lived by, brings up one fundamental question that is still
debated by many scholars today; was the foundation for the teachings of the Old Testamentbased
on the mythical story of Gilgamesh? The content of the epic, and that of the Old Testament, seem
