Andre Jackson Interview
This is an experience that i will never forget. From the start of the assignment paper, I knew I had to
face my worst fear of speech, because I am a shy person. This being my first interview, to conduct I
had to be very thorough; because I wanted to mask my fears and take up the challenge. According to
my personality i perceive myself to be an introvert and prefer being quiet, and this is part of my
personality, I would try to mask as a professional. For this paper I would describe in detail how I
prepared, carried out my interview with Mr. Andre Jackson, who is a customer service manager at
walmart stores in my city, where i work. To begin I came up with the appropriate questions about
culture. Mr. Jackson is an African American, I did

Alcoholics Anonymous Support Group
In the United States, there are many support groups and programs available to individuals seeking
recovery from hardships, addictions, or struggles. Members with similar experiences meet together to
encourage, advise, and provide support for one another in order to promote recovery. One well known
support group, Alcoholics Anonymous, is a 12 step program a support group that applies a series of 12
steps in order to achieve recovery. 12 step programs and support groups can be spotted almost
anywhere, including at churches, medical facilities, as well as in schools. AA s 12 step program and

abuse in its systematic, recovery focused, and empathetic approach. AA s 12 steps, from having
admitted we were powerless over alcohol... to having a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps
helps guide a person from alcoholism to sobriety (Alcoholics Anonymous [AA], 2001, pp. 59 60). The
steps are easy to follow checkpoints in the steps to sobriety, and because they are verbalized at every

In New York, United States a new wave of Jewish refugees is going to create a new American identity
among society. To the skepticism of the grand percent of the Jewish community, America was indeed
the gateway from dictatorship, prejudice, persecution, and death to Jews. An impressive 85% of Jews

the World Zionist Organization s International Center for Countering Anti Semitism. During the early
20th century, Jews are going to experience hardships in their daily life that will force them to evacuate

Jews in Russia were forced into the Pale. Meanwhile, in the United States, a group of Jews established
the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society which provided immigrants with clothing, shelter, and other
necessities. Jews were drawn to the big cities in search of opportunities for a better livelihood
(Feinstein Oct/12/2017). Consequently, the First and Second Aliyah to Palestine represented an open
gate to new possibilities in Israel. However, the Second Aliyah was a combination of both Zionist
sentiment and the violence that was ongoing in the Czar Empire. The Zionist movement had the
chance of infusing the sentiment of a homeland once Russia became more restrictive and
discriminatory against the Jewish community. According to the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration, the
Second Aliyah immigrants established several kibbutzim and strengthen the Hebrew language. Some
immigrants settled in what is known now as Tel Aviv and other decided to move across the Atlantic to

from leaving Russia for the Palestine or West.

The Bolsheviks and the Tragedy of the October Revolution...
The Bolsheviks and the Tragedy of the October Revolution
The majority of the people are with us. The majority of the working and oppressed people all over the
world are with us. Ours is the cause of justice. Our victory is assured. 1
October was a classic coup d état, the capture of governmental power by a small minority, carried out
without mass engagement. 2
The October Revolution was perhaps the most momentous event of the twentieth century. It led to the
creation of the Soviet Union, the first avowedly Communist nation in history, which was to become a
global superpower, an inspiration to many, an object of the hatred of many more. Possibly more
important was the role the memory of the October Revolution played in the ... Show more content on

The October Revolution was interpreted quite differently by those hostile to the Communist leaders of
the Soviet Union. In their top down histories of the Russian Revolution the common people appeared
as the passive objects of the evil machinations of the Bolsheviks. 4 The Bolsheviks cynically adopted
populist and anarchist slogans in order to recruit the masses as foot soldiers in their own quest for
power. If any apparent support for the October Revolution was seen among the masses, it was the
product of ignorance, skilled propaganda and a supple improvisation by the Bolsheviks themselves,
who transformed their elite operation into a temporary mass organization 5 to seduce the Russian
masses. The socialist reality of October was imaginary, and the Revolution itself was an amateur
police operation masked with expert propaganda to give an appearance of proletarian legitimacy 6
Both of these interpretations are heavily politicized. The former s purpose was to establish the
legitimacy of the Soviet Union as the genuine embodiment of the will of the Russian Proletariat, the
authentic People s State. The latter was meant to strip the USSR of that legitimacy and expose the
oppressive and unpopular dictatorship that ruled the country with an iron fist. As is not uncommon in
such situations, both of these interpretations

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Light Emiting Diode And...
Light emitting diode or LED technology is a new sensation in commercial and residential lighting
applications. Every dark area that needs to be brightened and every object that needs indication is now
becoming lively with LEDs. The reason is simple, world is striving to save energy, and LEDs are stars
in field of energy efficient technology.
The dominating advantages of LED over the conventional lighting like; incandescent bulb and CFL,
makes them the best choice for every new installation and upgrade that needs to be illuminated.
Discussing some of the LED advantages that make them superior option:
Energy efficient
LED converts 80% of your electrical energy into light energy. So it does really justify for what you

They are already packaged in a way to emit focused light. This is a useful characteristic to feature
illumination like in jewelry shop. And, being a solid state device they are difficult to damage with
shock.
These advantages show that LEDs in all the ways are best suitable choice for both indications and
illumination lighting applications. However, as every emerging technology has some issues, so LED
isn t untouched with it. The only disadvantage that LED installation has right now is high initial cost.
If you have guts to spend 1000 bucks for few LED light bulbs, then LED lighting is 100% lucrative
option. Also, low quality LED light will degrade in color more quickly than new branded one, so
always look for high quality Energy star rated LED bulb.
Application
Whether you are thinking about installing new lighting in home or upgrading the existing one, looking
to shine your favorite showcases, or adorn your backyard swimming pool with dramatic lighting, LED
is always there as an option for you. LED luminaries are actively creating enchant and colorful
environment in every possible sector like industrial, commercial, residential, security, public places,

Tao Te Ching Book Report
Trying to understand the concept of the Tao Te Ching is hard for someone to do fast because the text is
complex. However after a person is able to sit and actually analyze the text they are able to understand
and depict the main ideas Tao Tzu had wanted us to know. These ideas or followings that Tao Tzu
wrote in his book the Tao Te Ching are important life learnings. Early Taoism philosophers left cities
to learn from nature and people living the life of the Tao, hopeful to bring human civilization into the
natural order. Lao Tzu left the Chinese emperor s court on a water buffalo, after growing tired of
politics, in hopes to make a change. On his Tao Tzu s Journey is when he wrote the Tao Te Ching. In

In china there is Tao School and Tao religion, Tao School which is studied as a philosophy focuses
more on understanding and practicing Tao. Tao religion revolves more around worshipping, rituals and
gods. However they both focus on living in harmony with the Tao. There are also people who use the
two approaches at the same time not defining to a specific categories. The Tao Te Ching was not
written as a religious text but its impact on china is tremendous. Taoism does have a religious aspect
to it. However I concentrate on the philosophical aspect which is compatible with other religions.
Many Christians freely explore the concepts of Taoism and add whatever they think is useful to their
own beliefs. The idea is to explore and learn the correct way or the better way to live life and to
conduct our lives by understanding some of the principles that rule our lives. I grew up Roman
Catholic but I do not hold those religious beliefs my parents taught me to this day. Prefer to be called
agnostic because I do not identify to any faith but I do not necessarily don t believe in god. Reading

There are differences between hearing and deaf cinema. When you watch a deaf movie, there is no
build up of tension, because there is no dramatic music, things just happen suddenly. The group of us
watching this movie actually screamed because we got caught off guard. The actors also use a lot
more expression, which adds more quality to the movie. Hearing actors usually have a dead face, no
matter what they are saying. On the other hand, deaf use their bodies more and their facial
expressions. I also caught a line where he Rex told Troy he better stop telling him what to do, or he
will cut off his hands. I found this extremely interesting, because this is the deaf equivalent to the
hearing line, Put a sock in it. They are both used to tell people to shut up; however, you cannot shove a
sock in a deaf person s mouth because they can still sign. If you cut off a deaf person s hands, they can
no longer communicate. I think it is important to catch small details like

The Fall of the Aztec Empire
Abstract:
The Aztec civilization during its peak was the strongest civilization in the western hemisphere. When
the Spaniards first set foot in the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, they could not believe that a civilization
so primitive in their minds could have been so culturally developed and powerful. However, before
making it to Tenochtitlan, they had discovered that all was not well in the Aztec empire. From many
native Indians that had tension with the Aztecs, they learned of internal and pre existing problems that
existed. This investigation examines to what extent where those internal and pre existing factors to
blame for the downfall of the Aztec Empire. The investigation was undertaken using some of the only

However, the story of the Aztec defeat and the successful resolution of the Spanish mission against
incredible odds raises many questions. Regardless of more advanced technology and weapons, the
Spanish force was vastly outnumbered and began a military campaign poorly supplied within an
unknown territory against an unknown enemy. This paper explores the possibility that other key
factors were at play, which provided the Spanish with a several of advantages and facilitated the
successful resolution of their campaign. Furthermore, these factors allowed for an incredibly quick
and effective subjugation of millions of people considering that by comparison it took hundreds of
years to expel the Muslim armies from southern Spain, a war ending in 1492 and in which many
conquistadores fighting in the new world took part of. This paper will argue that internal religious
quarrels, unsustainable tax obligations, and continuing military conflicts weakened the Aztec social
fabric by increasing resentment among subjugated towns and cities and diminishing trust among Aztec
citizens in their highly centralized government. To begin with, it is important to understand the city
states did not outline the division of politics, society, religion, and economy as clearly as modern day
western societies do or even

New England Colonies Essay
The New England Colonies
The colonies of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut made up the New
England colonies. Most of the Europeans in the New England colonies were there to escape the
religious persecution they faced in England. They practiced a lot of different things in these colonies
compared to the middle and southern and colonies of colonial america. The New England colonists,
except for Rhode Island, were predominantly Puritans who practiced very strict religious lives. The
civil government in these colonies dealt quite harshly with those who dared to disagree with the
Puritan church. People were being exiled for speaking out against Puritanism. They whipped baptists.
They cropped, or cut off, the ears of Quakers. They even went as far as to hang Quaker missionaries.
They did all of this in an order to proselytize and convert people to be Puritan. Laws in the New
England colonies made everyone attend a house of worship pay taxes that would be used to fund the
salaries of the ministers. Government in the New England colonies were based upon elements of
theocracy. The leaders and officials got their authority from a divine guidance and their civil authority
was to enforce religious conformity. Citizens that didn t follow the Puritan s religious beliefs were
considered to be a threat to the civil order and would get severely punished for it. The New England
churches functioned a lot differently from the churches back in England.

How Does Truman Capote Use Conflict In Miriam
In Miriam, by Truman Capote, amidst loneliness, Mrs. Miller becomes face to face with a young girl
whose personality is the complete opposite to her own, a girl who is not afraid to ask for what she
wants, while Mrs. Miller is recluse and avoids asking too much from other people. Gradually, as
Miriam pushes Mrs. Miller over the edge, she begins to lose the polite, withdrawn part of herself who
gives in to passivity. Realizing her faults, Mrs. Miller avoids any of her past characteristics and any
qualities that remind her of Miriam. Through characterization, conflict, and tone, Truman Capote uses
Miriam to reveal to the reader that self preservation and detachment can tear a person apart, just as
Mrs. Miller herself became a hollow shell of a person. With characterization and conflict, it is clear
that Miriam was able to enslave Mrs. Miller because her isolated life made her vulnerable. Miriam is

The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas Analysis
The Boy in Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne is a tragic and remarkable novel which is set in Nazi
Germany during the Second World War and tells the story of a 9 year old boy called Bruno. Bruno s
father was made the commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp by Hitler which meant his
family had to leave their home in Berlin and move into a soldier paroled house in Auschwitz. After
Bruno does some exploring, he meets a boy the same age as him, named Shmuel who is a Jew and
lives behind a barbed wire fence. Bruno is confused why Shmuel is on the other side of the fence and
why he wears pyjamas all day. As the novel progresses, we learn that Shmuel is a prisoner of the
Auschwitz concentration camp that Bruno s father runs, but Bruno is completely oblivious to that fact.
One day, Bruno s mother heads out of Auschwitz to go run some errands, when she returns, she smells
something unpleasant and asks one of the soldiers what it is. He replies with they smell even worse
when they burn, don t they. From this, we can tell that the Nazi s believed that they would be a
stronger country without the Jews so they made a plan to burn them. During the novel, Shmuel and
Bruno bond and form a strong friendship. Shmuel one day asks Bruno to crawl under the barbed wire
fence into the concentration camp and help him find his father when it suddenly starts pouring with
rain. Bruno and Shmuel (along with many other men from the camp) are herded into a long, secure, air

Eating disorders and fitness obsession are very popular in pop culture and vampires seem to only add
fuel to the fire to these nasty behaviors. The vampires create relatable habits portrayals. Most male
vampires are strong and tough, they can fight, kill, and protect the girl. This view makes men seem
like that s what it takes to be a man. You have to be strong and competent in everything you do
especially when it comes to your masculinity. Women are only reinforced by female vampires,
because the female vampire is effortlessly beautiful and unrealistically desirable. The female vampire
s outer beauty means more than what she is and who she is. Both male and female vampires do not
eat. They survive off blood, but the fact society idolizes these beautiful vampires can also reinforce the
creation of actual eating disorders and body complexes. Also considering body image, dominance
between genders and relationships, and the main character in Vampire Diaries is Elena gilbert, she is

The Civilization Of The Egyptians
The civilization of the Egyptians was accomplished by its surroundings. The Nile always flooded
among the spring time every year. The flood would leave tons of fertile silt. The Sahara Desert also
surrounded Egypt, but with the Nile it was a great place to live in. With it Egypt grew a lot of
manpower and acquired a surplus to trade and to devote to other matters. Nature had also created a
vast fortress wall that protected them from hostile neighbors. They all spoke a common language and
shared religious beliefs. They made a palette for the gods that was two feet and it told the unification
of Egypt. Narmer was the first one to unify Egypt and it was kept that way for 3,000 years. They had a
belief that their pharaoh would be resurrected in another world and made huge tombs for them with
necessities inside with their dead body. There are nine eras of Egyptian history, they are called:

My Memories Of My Childhood
Looking back at my childhood, I suppose you could say it was pretty difficult. Even at my happiest, I
was living with a foster family, separated from the rest of my biological relatives. However, I couldn t
complain. I loved them like they were my family that I spent my whole life with. I was a five year old
boy living a happy life. I had grown attached to the family, feeling like I was truly a part of it. Then
one cold November day it all changed. A woman dressed in black came to my home I had grown to
love and told me it was time to go away. I horrified, not knowing where I could be taken. After
waiting in a room full of toys for a few hours, she came back in and told me it was time to go. She put
me in the back seat of a car and started driving. Driving to my mother s house, to live with her and my
two brothers. They didn t even feel like family anymore. Time marched on, however. My sister was
born, I was reintroduced to my family, and although I missed the Bernards, everything felt like it was
going to be ok.
Everything seemed to be, until I was fifteen. One September morning while sitting in my English
class, I was called to the office. Upon arrival, I was informed that I was being de enrolled by my
mother. She told me that she was putting me on independent studies. I could handle that. However, I
couldn t handle the reason; my mother had been diagnosed with cancer.
The weeks started turning into months. The next thing I knew, it was time to start junior year, and I

This Essay Is About The Autobiography Of Miss Jane Pittman
This essay is about the Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and History. This essay argues that the
historical institution of slavery has not allowed for change to come. The emancipation has set all
enslaved people free from slavery but has not made enslaved people free from the effects of slavery.
The damage that the institution of slavery inflicted on the people of the South has conflicted with
perusal of freedom and change. The major theme of the passage is the conflict of the historical past
and the present. Although the novel presents many events of former enslaved people overcoming the
shackles of slavery it also presents the drawbacks of the legacy of slavery. The conflict of the passage
is rooted from the longing for an interracial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tee Bob s father Robert did not attempt to explain it to Tee Bob because he believed that these things
didn t need to be explained as they are clear and one day he will eventually understand it. Robert
thought he didn t have to tell Tee Bob about these things. They was part of life, like the sun and the
rain was part of life, and Tee Bob would learn them for himself when he got older (Gaines, 154).
Tee Bob kills himself with these repeated generational teachings haunting him. He starts to hear the
teachings being historically passed down from his grandfather talking to his father and then his uncle
to Jimmy Caya s being fresh in his ear. The repeating of these rules proves the main conflict of this
passage which is the overcoming of the past because the historical institution of slavery. Everything
that surrounds him reminds him of the historical past, reminding him of the reasoning of the rules that
are set in place. Now he tried to forget what he had seen on the floor back there. But nothing in that

books on history in there (Gaines, 250). The history and slavery books that surround Tee Bob in that
library draws upon the impossible escaping of the effects of history and slavery.
When Jules narrates to Jane the death of Tee Bob he blames his death on everyone. We all killed him.

A Bust of theEmperor Caligula
Introduction
Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (b. A.D. 12, d. A.D. 41, emperor A.D. 37 41) represents a turning
point in the early history of the Principate. Unfortunately, his is the most poorly documented reign of
the Julio Claudian dynasty. The literary sources for these four years are meager, frequently anecdotal,
and universally hostile.[[1]] As a result, not only are many of the events of the reign unclear, but Gaius
himself appears more as a caricature than a real person, a crazed megalomaniac given to capricious
cruelty and harebrained schemes. Although some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
[[6]] Modern scholars have pored over these incidents and come up with a variety of explanations:
Gaius suffered from an illness; he was misunderstood; he was corrupted by power; or, accepting the
ancient evidence, they conclude that he was mad.[[7]] However, appreciating the nature of the ancient
sources is crucial when approaching this issue. Their unanimous hostility renders their testimony
suspect, especially since Gaius s reported behavior fits remarkably well with that of the ancient tyrant,
a literary type enshrined in Greco Roman tradition centuries before his reign. Further, the only eye
witness account of Gaius s behavior, Philo s Embassy to Gaius, offers little evidence of outright
insanity, despite the antagonism of the author, whom Gaius treated with the utmost disrespect. Rather,
he comes across as aloof, arrogant, egotistical, and cuttingly witty but not insane. The best explanation
both for Gaius s behavior and the subsequent hostility of the sources is that he was an inexperienced
young man thrust into a position of unlimited power, the true nature of which had been carefully
disguised by its founder, Augustus. Gaius, however, saw through the disguise and began to act
accordingly. This, coupled with his troubled upbringing and almost complete lack of tact led to
behavior that struck his contemporaries as

Analysis Of Maus By Art Spiegelman
Does any human actually want to take responsibilities for the mistakes they made? Doesn t every
human want to feel bad for themselves when they make what the consider a mistake? Many people
were traumatized by a horrific event that they were forced into, while their friends and family were all
being killed and forced to work against their will for the Nazi s. While many people were affected, not
all of them were able to fully explain how hurt they were as it was something that was not easy to talk
about for them. In a graphic novel called Maus, the author Art Spiegelman is trying to connect to his
father and understand the hardships he went through during a hard time called the Holocaust. The
author starts to talk about the Holocaust with his father and starts to learn how hard it was for his
father, Vladek and his now deceased mother, Anja. His father and mother fought to not go into the
camps until the last second, doing anything possible to stay away from them whether it meant lying or
hiding with the rest of their family. When discussing this with his father he wanted to be able to tell
his father s story for him, as he was never able to do it himself. Not only does Spiegelman just tell his
story with words, he tells it with pictures through a graphic novel, using unique techniques with the
illustrations in order to explain how broken human relationships were at this time period. Art
Spiegelman represents humans as being accustomed to animalistic behaviors as he

Examples Of Colonialism In Midnight s Children
Midnight s Children (1981) is a novel linking India s transition from British colonialism to
independence to its protagonist, Saleem Sinai a boy with telepathic powers who is able to organize the
1001 other children of special abilities born within an hour of Indian independence (which took place
at midnight on the 15th of August, 1947, hence the title). It is considered a seminal example of both
postcolonial literature and magical realism. In fact, it was used early on in postcolonial studies as a
definitive piece of postcolonial literature that is, Midnight s Children helped postcolonial theorists
create a definition of postcolonialism. Consequently, Midnight s Children at least the postcolonial

Simmel Stranger
Georg Simmel s The Stranger refines the sociological use of the word stranger through his unique
elaboration of its meaning and place in the world. Simmel employs the word stranger to label a group
of people who have a certain amount of nearness and remoteness, are objective, and are socially and
economically mobile within a society.
In this essay I will focus on one particular aspect of the stranger; Simmel discusses the stranger s
relationship with society as: despite being inorganically appended to it, the stranger is still an organic
member of the group (Simmel 149). From my interpretation, the term inorganic describes something
diverse and distinct; Simmel s stranger is inorganic in the sense that his position within society is

Therefore, when the entire society is composed of strangers, we can only speak of people whose roots
in America are older or newer (Kennedy 32). In Kennedy s model of the American nation, we cannot
distinguish between members of a society and label them as strangers or non strangers. The beginning
of the American nation consisted of a variety of strangers coming together to form a community that
developed over time. These strangers founded the American nation, and their contribution is
noticeable and lasting. As Kennedy reveals, strangers add up to the strengths and weaknesses of
America (Kennedy 8). Strangers define the American nation; the old stranger founded America, the
current stranger is developing with America, and the new stranger will come and continue to reform
America: the bosom of America is open to receive not only the opulent and respectable stranger, but
the oppressed and persecuted of all nations and religions; whom we shall welcome to a participation
of all our rights and privileges... (Kennedy 51). The fact that all citizens were strangers at some point
insists that America is the product of the stranger and that America stands for the stranger: [a] spirit
that is expressed in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal (Kennedy

Conversely, as Chiaki moves out of the traditional heroine, love interest role within the narrative,
Nagito begins to fill it. Mostly due to the popularity of Nagito s character, the developers have placed
many of the traditional female fan service gags on to him. In addition to having Nagito appear on
many of the promotional material in his normal island outfit, Danganronpa also had him appear in
other traditionally female outfits, such as a kimono and a servant outfit. Furthermore, he receives these
gags inside the story as well; for example the character gets an over exaggerated shower scene in
Danganronpa: The End of Hope s Peak Academy Despair Side. Nagito also has received his own mini
album, several song based vocal tracks preformed by the character s voice actor. These mini albums
are traditionally given to female characters, due to the fact that many female anime characters are
presented with the ability to sing well because it makes them more attractive. The songs included on
the album include two love songs, one directed to an ambiguous male individual and the second
directed to Hajime specifically. Moreover, the way that Nagito talks about Hajime imparts a more
romantic aspect to the two boys relationship than the relationship between Hajime and Chiaki. In
Nagito s fifth free time event, when trying to confess his feelings to Hajime, Nagito uses the verb
aishiteru to mean love. However, aishiteru is an extreme form of romantic

Postpartum Depression In Women
Postpartum depression is a mood disorder in females that is known to be present within the 4 to 6
weeks after childbirth (Battle et al). This condition is the most common complication after childbirth
(Mosses Kolko et al.,2009).Studies have shown predictors which lead to postpartum depression such
as maternal childhood maltreatment and lifetime posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)in pregnancy

can be present during the pregnancy or during postpartum period (Mallikarjum 2005).
Postpartum depression has some risk factor, and a study showed that a poor sleep during the third
trimester of pregnancy is a risk factor for postpartum depression, which is related with the age of the

Spanking A Child
The topic of should you spank your child has been a hot button topic recently in the U.S. While many
Parents support the idea, some parents on the other hand are against the idea. In this thread, I will be
stating my opinion on spanking a child. Why or why not? I will also be state weather or not the U.S
should ban spanking, like many European countries have done.
To start what is my position on spanking a child? While many parents tend to agree with the idea of
spanking, I myself do not agree with the concept. My reason for this is because many adults say that
spanking is a form of discipline. Well if we take a look at the word discipline, it stems from the word

One of those means can be embarrassment. At the ages of 10 to 18 years old it s all about image for a
child. A child wants to fit in so bad that if a parent do something to disrupt that image it s mental, it s
emotional, and depending on what you did it can be physical. Meaning you don t have to hit a child to
get your point across, and all parents do it. Embarrassing a child is a rite of passage as a parent as well
as a tool that is 100 percent legal. Now, should the U.S put a ban on spanking a child? My answer for
that is no. My reason for this is because as a parent, there isn t a book on parenting, you are pretty
much making it up as you go, and if you believe that spanking is the right thing to do. Then it shouldn
t be up to the government to tell you how to parent. However, if you are hitting a child to an extensive
degree causing physical marks that look 50 shades of purple, or leaving laceration marks from a
switch, then you are clearly abusing a child and should be punished accordingly.
Now would a law preventing spanking interfere with parenting decisions? Yes and no. What I mean by
this is if you pass a law like this not all parents will comply, and be willing to learn new parenting
techniques, while the parents who are willing to learn will not be affected because they are still finding
ways to discipline their

Phillis Wheatley s On Being Brought From Africa To America
Phillis Wheatley was an African American woman who had a long journey of being a slave. The
majority of her poems are mainly about Christianity and slavery. For instance, On Being Brought from

great role in saving her race from their miserable fate of being enslaved. Phillis Wheatley was a
survivor and a leader. Her strong, determined personality naturally made her a role model that

experience of being taken from Africa to be brought to America and how it affects her life as well as

Formative Assessment Reflection
The assessment practices that I feel are most important in my school is the usage of Common Core. It
requires students to analyze, synthesize, apply and evaluate information that is gained from reading
(Afflerbach, 2015). I have seen firsthand the positive effects of using Common Core especially in the
ELA discipline. It allows for higher order thinking skills versus the lower level questioning that the
students have been exposed to for so long.
Some assessment practices that I feel are in need of more emphasis in my school is the understanding
that reading is an active and complex process that understands written text (Afflerbach, 2015). Also,
seeing that there is a great need for using formative assessments set off a red flag for me. At my
school, we tend to focus on beginning with the end in mind and focus more on summative assessments
instead of formative assessments. After reading Afflerbach s article, I noticed that formative
assessment focus more on determining where the student is and what they need next in their
instruction (Afflerbach, 2015). Upon reading the article, I ve come to realize that formative
assessment drives the next steps of instruction and provides the teacher the means to understand where
they are coming from in order to get them to where they need to be.
Reflecting on my observations of my students, I feel that standardized testing has not been proven to
be in their best interest. Berliner states that no single indicator can assess a child s

Neil Shubin Your Inner Fish Summary
The book Your Inner Fish by Neil Shubin is a journey into 3.5 billion year history of the human body.
The book is an entertaining and useful novel that demonstrates the evolution of some of our major
structures through time. By analyzing fossils and DNA, the author shows us that our hands truly
resemble fish fins, our head is organized like that of a long extinct jawless fish, and that major parts of
our genome look and function like those of worms and bacteria. The book takes us on a remarkable
expedition in which it will show us our inner fish, reptile and monkey. The author of Your Inner Fish,
Neil Shubin, discovered a missing link , a fossil he called Tiktaalik. Tiktaalik shows features that
connect the evolutionary gap between fishes and land living animals. Shubin demonstrates in the first
four chapters how different branches of science prove that many organs within numerous creatures,
ancient or living, are deeply related. For the following chapters he discusses the resemblances between
the designs of bodies, skulls, hands, eyes and ears belonging to most of the beings of the animal
kingdom. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Rise Of Digital Banking
The Rise of Digital Banking
People s life style has changed drastically from 20 to 30 years ago where on the street corner you can
pick a fruit or some newspaper or magazine. The living pace is faster than ever and it is not stopping
every single day. Nowadays on the subway underground to air flight 10,000 feet above the ground,
pedestrians walking down the street to drives at red light stop, the small screen on that smart cellphone
has changed the way of living for everyone. Technology innovations may be a big part of it but also it
has given the wings for traditional service industry to keep up with modern lives needs. As the blood
of modern economic system, financial industry has also utilized the IT technology to help itself
running through each tubes of this system faster than ever. That is the rise of digital banking.
In the old days, people go to bank branches in order to either make a deposit or a withdrawn to their
accounts. From 14th century in Venice, Italy to 1970s in New York, United States, banking seems to
the same as it never changes. There is no other options if you don t want to have your own house full
of cash open for thieves and robbers. But with digital currency and online banking system, those days
have long gone for younger generations only with pictures shown on the history books. Starting from
1990s, growing with the boom of IT technology in Silicon Valley, digital banking has given itself a
key role of shaking up the entire banking industry as

The Government And Indonesian Central Bank
In the past decades, the Indonesian banking system has experienced significant changes. The
economic crisis that hit Indonesia in 1997 1998 has resulted in a deteriorate bank performance and the
banking system nearly collapsed. The economy declined by 13% in 1998 and the country had to take a
43 billion USD bailout fund by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as its currency weakened,
companies could not pay their loans and at least 80 banks failed or were nationalized (Setiaji and
Chen, 2012). The government and Indonesian Central Bank (Bank Indonesia) implemented various
policy changes in order to save the banking system from collapsing, including the provision of Bank
Indonesia Liquidity Assistance (Syafri, 2012). These policies have ... Show more content on

While the global economic condition is still recovering from crisis, many argue that the process is
uneven and susceptible to shock (Bank Indonesia, 2015). The recovery process tends to slow down as
there is weakened commodity prices and foreign investment, and these factors are inevitably affecting
the growth rate of Indonesia. GDP growth is falling from 6.3% in 2007 to a forecasted growth rate of
5.5% in 2015 (Asian Development Bank, 2015). In this case, as a financial intermediary, banks have a
strategic role in supporting the national economic growth. It is believed that efficient banking system
is essential for the country development. Therefore, a study looking at the efficiency and profitability
of Indonesian banks is substantial as it will signal the growth of the Indonesian economy in the future.
According to Bloomberg, the lenders in Indonesia have the most profits among the top 20 economies
in the world (Vallikappen and Moestafa, 2013). The data shows that Indonesian banks have higher
profitability than other Southeast Asian (ASEAN) countries due to high demand for credit. It can be
seen that banks in Indonesia tend to have high net interest margin (NIM), which demonstrates the
ability of traditional bank activities to generate interest based income. From 2000 to 2009, average
banks in Indonesia had the highest NIM of 5.29% compare to other ASEAN countries, including the

How Did Ancient Greece Influence Modern Society
The Influence of Greece on Modern Society
Greece and Rome have both heavily contributed to modern society, some of their contributions being
architecture, knowledge, and tendencies in government. Without these two ancient civilizations, we
might not be as technologically advanced as we are today. Although ancient Romans invented so
many important things like aqueducts and roads, the ancient Greeks were more prominent in
influencing modern culture.
Some may argue that Rome has much more influence on modern societies, but the interesting thing
about Rome is that it was heavily influenced by Greece. Ancient Greece was at its peak with art and
religion around 800 B.C. to 500 B.C., and ancient Rome came around during early 700 B.C. Ancient
Rome adapted many of the same ideals that ancient Greece had, like their polytheistic religion and
their type of government. Essentially, ancient Greece was the stepping stone that began all of these
ancient characteristics and influenced ancient Rome.
In almost every modern society, art is treasured and appreciated and held up to certain standards. The
ancient Greeks were big ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before direct democracy in Athens, Greek city states were somewhat wild and unpredictable in terms
of leadership. Popular during these times were monarchies and oligarchies, and after many years the
Greeks decided to contribute one of the greatest things to modern society, democracy. Now, this
democracy was nowhere near the same as modern societies have adapted today, but the fundamental
building blocks for today s government were highlighted in Athens direct democracy. Athens direct
democracy consisted of every male Athenian having the rights to vote and participate in politics and
elect new leaders (Cartwright). This heavily influenced modern day democracy, where citizens have
equal rights in voting, including

Soil Pollution Involving The Accumulation Of Excess Heavy...
Soil pollution involving the accumulation of excess heavy metals is toxic to humans and other
mammalian life.1 The effect on animals can ac cumulate in the food chains and instigate public health
concerns in the future. Normally, the exposure due to food chain transfer is chronic, however, there are
rare acute cases where direct ingestion of such pollutants is poisonous.2 Given the importance of the
situation, the determination of toxic heavy metals in the environment is essential.
The primary source of soil pollution can be at tributed to the history of industrial/commercial activi
ties in certain areas.4 We have chosen to analyze the soil at Northwestern University to highlight
human factors and contributions to this pollution. Given the history of the Northwestern, there are
many areas of the campus that differ in properties such as the age of buildings, the proximity to bodies
of water, areas of construction, and high traffic. For use in our study, the campus was divided into
areas A, B, C, D, E, F (Figure 1). Since Northwestern has been regularly undergoing construction in
the past century, we pre dicted that the areas with older buildings would have different metal
concentrations when compared with areas with more recent architecture. Due to the use of lead based
paint in old construction, we expect that there should be a higher concentration of metals such as lead
found near older buildings such as University Hall or Locy Hall in area E in comparison to area F with

The Importance Of Religious Freedom In America
Today, in modern America, religious freedom is a right for all people, but it was not always this way.
All the founders came from different religions, and found it important to have that freedom to believe
in whatever the individual wants. It forever changed the course of America. Due to one diligent man,
it has become a part of the American life of all citizens. This man believed strongly in what he wanted,
and was persecuted for his beliefs, and kicked out of many universities and schools. He became a
strong advocate, and the colony he established would change the tolerance of all people. William
Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, established a colony based on the ideas of religious liberty,
equality, and self government which served as the foundation of America s constitutional rights in a
secular government wherein all citizens may freely practice their religious belief, those ideas still
impact the government s inaction concerning citizens religious practices.
According to William Penn, the key principles of religious toleration were religious liberty, equality,
and self government. According to William Penn: Faith Not Force, it claims Guided by his conscience
and their teachings, Penn became an outspoken supporter and a writer in search of mutual respect for
varying religions. He became a very active supporter of this right, and continued to press for the
respect or equality. Liberty is given to the people by allowing them an environment that provides a

Tale Of Two Cities Metaphors
The literature that came out of the French Revolution often shares common themes of death, rebirth,
and destruction. Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens is much the same way. Throughout the novel,
Dickens clearly supports the revolution but also depicts the brutality of the revolutionaries. Dickens
uses powerful metaphors of a sea to symbolize the revolutionaries destroying old France and the
belittling name of Jacques to depict the narcissistic views of the French aristocracy to show his
support for the revolution.
Although Dickens clearly supports the revolutionaries cause, through metaphors of water, he
highlights the sometimes animalistic nature of the revolution. In Book one, [T]he sea did what it liked
and what it liked was destruction. Dickens acknowledges the inevitable nature of the revolution by
comparing the sea to the French mob. And the mob, much like a sea, ... Show more content on

In Book two, Dickens alludes to the storming of the Bastille prison and once again describes the mob
as a sea and the Bastille, the beach being attacked by the storm. With a roar, that sounded as if all the
breath in France had been shaped into a detested word, the living sea rose, wave upon wave, depth
upon depth, and overflowed the city. Again Dickens varies his opinion of the revolutions within a
single line. He starts the metaphor depicting a unified France, at on the part of the revolutionaries
versus nobility. By this point, all of France was involved with or affected by the revolution. In the
second part of the quote particular the very end, the word choice of overflowed gives an image of
excess violence. Dickens purposely used a word with negative connotations to encourage readers to

describing the swelling and overflowing of the crowd. Traditionally, swelling occurs when an

Introduction to Balanced Scorecard
Introduction to the Balanced Scorecard and Performance Measurement Systems 1 Chapter 1
Introduction to the Balanced Scorecard and Performance Measurement Systems by Christian C.
Johnson From the beginning, it is important to understand why measuring an organization s
performance is both necessary and vital. An organization operating without a performance
measurement system is like an airplane flying without a compass, a Formula One race car driver
guiding his car blindfolded, or a CEO operating without a strategic plan. The purpose of measuring
performance is not only to know how a business is performing but also to enable it to perform better.
The ultimate aim of implementing a performance measurement system is to improve the ... Show

Putting the Balanced Scorecard to Work. Harvard Business Review. September October 1993.
Organizations have adapted the BSC to their particular external and internal circumstances. Both
commercial and notfor profit organizations have successfully used the BSC framework. Since 1992,
Drs. Kaplan and Norton have studied the success of various applications of the BSC in different types
of organizations. Companies have used as few as four measures and as many as several hundred
measures when designing a BSC performance measurement system. Based on this research, it has
been found that a BSC framework using about 20 25 measures is the usual recommended best
practice. Smaller organizations might use fewer measures, but it is generally not advisable to go
beyond a total of 25 measures for any single organization, holding company, or conglomerate group of
holding companies. 4 Balanced Scorecard for State Owned Enterprises Financial Figure 2: Example

Bone Marrow Transplant Research Paper
The Different Kinds of Bone Marrow Transplants There are three different types of BMTs,
autologous, allogeneic, and syngeneic. In autologous BMTs the patient who is receiving the bone
marrow was also the donor. Before patient received their treatment, in the form of chemotherapy,
radiation, or both, stem cells were taken from the patient via bone marrow harvest or apheresis (The
Johns Hopkins University, para. 10). Apheresis is a process of collecting peripheral blood stem cells,
stem cells found in the bloodstream (National Marrow Donor Program, para. 1). Once the cells are
removed, they are frozen, and then given back to the patient after their treatment. The term rescue is
often used when describing this form of procedure (The Johns ... Show more content on

8), neuroblastoma (Knight, Jackson Grusby, and White Ryan, 163), and some solid tumor cancer,
however those are very rare (The Johns Hopkins University, para. 8). Additional cancers are being
evaluated in clinical trials for eligibility (Knight, Jackson Grusby, and White Ryan, 163).
Matching Donors and Patients Finding a potential donor involves matching the human leukocyte
antigen (HLA) tissue. These antigens are on the surface of special white blood cells. The HLA tissue
determines the genetic makeup of a person s immune system (The Johns Hopkins University, para.
11). Doctors try to minimize the possible side effects of BMTs by using donor stem cells that match
the patients as closely as possible. The overall success of a BMT depends on how closely the match
between donor and patient was. Less than one third of patients will have a matched sibling; siblings
are often the closest matches. In about one half of the cases it is possible to find an unrelated, matched
donor. The chances of a donor matching a patient increase drastically if the two are of the same racial
and ethnic background. Blood work is used to determine the level of a match between donor and
patient. Donor registries are often used to find donors when there is no related match.

Benefits Of Genetically Modified Organisms
It has been almost 20 years that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been in American s
food supply. As much as 80% of all packaged foods contain GMOs (Genetically Modified Foods: Get
the Facts). Although scientists have concluded evidence of a correlation associating GMOs to
hazardous health issues in animals, these products are still deemed safe for human consumption
according to the standards of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Interests in their
potentially harmful risks to humans have recently spiked triggering over twenty five countries to

By slipping it into our food without our knowledge, without any indication that there are genetically
modified organisms in our food, we are now unwittingly part of a massive experiment says journalist
Arjun Walia (Walia). GMOs need to be labeled, for it is the consumers health at risk while the farming
companies focus solely on the cost efficient qualities and profit of their dangerous products, not to
mention their ethical violation of nature. GMOs are considered to be as safe as their traditional
counterparts according to the FDA and are generally regulated (U.S. Food and Drug Administration),
the FDA does not refer to this category of foods as GMOs, but rather as GEs, genetically engineered.
Perhaps their reluctance to use the term GMO is intentional and to disassociate the products with the
infamous negative connotations. The following quote is from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
website, according to the section of their website titled Views on GE Foods , the FDA has a seemingly
very neutral stance regarding the manufacturing and market of said products: While FDA regulates
foods and ingredients, including foods made from GE plants, the agency neither supports GE plants
based on their perceived benefits nor opposes them based on their perceived risks. FDA s priority is to
ensure that all foods, including those derived from GE

The Eistads Research Paper
With six children and four adults spending all day on one confined houseboat, it was less than
peaceful. My family did not know what we were getting ourselves into spending a week with The
Eistads. They were a pleasant group of people, but our families were very different. They lived in a
small town surrounded fields, and The Eistads did not care much for hygiene. Lice were uncovered on
day three, and on day four there was the poop on the wall incident. The Eistads were a country bunch
and did many daily activities differently compared to my family.
Finally, the ciaos had become too much for my mother, Amy Eistad, and me, so we decided to take the
rickety pull behind boat out for an outing and hopefully bring back some dinner. A little determination

the others over dinner. Just as were all packed up, it started to down pour. The rushing winds and
gushing waves filled our tiny tin boat quickly. We were on the brink of being capsized.
Grab the buckets, bellowed Amy.
My mother and I hastily grabbed the buckets, and we started to move the water back where it
belonged. Then it happened. The motor puttered for a few minutes and then ultimately died. The
smoke from the motor filled our noses. I looked around and realized that we were stuck in the middle
of the lake, in pouring rain, with no motor. Basically, we were sitting in an electric conducting death
trap. I glanced over at Amy who was buckled over in laughter at the back of the boat

Malcolm X s Philosophy Of Black Pride, Black Nationalism,...
The Autobiography of Malcolm X informs the reader about Malcolm X s philosophy of black pride,
black nationalism, and pan Africanism. There are a billion reasons to care when it comes to a book
about a human rights activist. I want to take a look at something more personal. There is always time
for change. Who would have thought that a little kid from the country who bounced around between
foster homes, detention centers, and jails would have done anything with his life? I might have
guessed that Malcolm X lived a life of crime until he died in a gunfight based on his history. That did
not happen. He changed. I can probably think of a million things that I want to change in my life.
Some of them probably seem impossible. That is okay. This book teaches me that there is time for me
to change my life as long as I am not dead. This little kid from Nebraska could do it and so can I.
Malcolm X only got six short years before his family was torn apart by the death of his father and the
nervous breakdown of his mother in the beginning. He and his siblings became wards of the state. He
started to dream of living in Boston when he met his half sister Ella. Malcolm went through all kinds
of transformations in the next stage of his life. He started out as a wide eyed country bumpkin, turned
into a big time dancer, became a drug dealer, and landed in jail. In 1948 Malcolm s brother Philbert
wrote to him that he had discovered the natural religion for the black man, also known as the

This being my first interview, to conduct I had to be very thorough; because I wanted to mask my fears and take up the challenge. According to my personality i perceive myself to be an introvert and prefer being quiet, and this is part of my personality, I would try to mask as a professional. The majority of the working and oppressed people all over the world are with us. Ours is the cause of justice. Our victory is assured. 1 October was a classic coup d état, the capture of governmental power by a small minority, carried out without mass engagement. 2 The October Revolution was perhaps the most momentous event of the twentieth century. It led to the creation of the Soviet Union, the first avowedly Communist nation in history, which was to become a global superpower, an inspiration to many, an object of the hatred of many more. The October Revolution was interpreted quite differently by those hostile to the Communist leaders of the Soviet Union. In their top down histories of the Russian Revolution the common people appeared as the passive objects of the evil machinations of the Bolsheviks. 4 The Bolsheviks cynically adopted populist and anarchist slogans in order to recruit the masses as foot soldiers in their own quest for power. If any apparent support for the October Revolution was seen among the masses, it was the product of ignorance, skilled propaganda and a supple improvisation by the Bolsheviks themselves, who transformed their elite operation into a temporary mass organization 5 to seduce the Russian masses. The socialist reality of October was imaginary, and the Revolution itself was an amateur police operation masked with expert propaganda to give an appearance of proletarian legitimacy 6 Both of these interpretations are heavily politicized. The former s purpose was to establish the legitimacy of the Soviet Union as the genuine embodiment of the will of the Russian Proletariat, the authentic People s State. The latter was meant to strip the USSR of that legitimacy and expose the oppressive and unpopular dictatorship that ruled the country with an iron fist. The New England colonists, except for Rhode Island, were predominantly Puritans who practiced very strict religious lives. The civil government in these colonies dealt quite harshly with those who dared to disagree with the Puritan church. People were being exiled for speaking out against Puritanism. They whipped baptists. They cropped, or cut off, the ears of Quakers. They even went as far as to hang Quaker missionaries. The flood would leave tons of fertile silt. The Sahara Desert also surrounded Egypt, but with the Nile it was a great place to live in. With it Egypt grew a lot of manpower and acquired a surplus to trade and to devote to other matters. Nature had also created a vast fortress wall that protected them from hostile neighbors. They all spoke a common language and shared religious beliefs. They made a palette for the gods that was two feet and it told the unification of Egypt. Narmer was the first one to unify Egypt and it was kept that way for 3,000 years. They had a belief that their pharaoh would be resurrected in another world and made huge tombs for them with necessities inside with their dead body. Even at my happiest, I was living with a foster family, separated from the rest of my biological relatives. However, I couldn t complain. I loved them like they were my family that I spent my whole life with. I was a five year old boy living a happy life. I had grown attached to the family, feeling like I was truly a part of it. Then one cold November day it all changed. A woman dressed in black came to my home I had grown to love and told me it was time to go away. I horrified, not knowing where I could be taken. After waiting in a room full of toys for a few hours, she came back in and told me it was time to go. She put me in the back seat of a car and started driving. Driving to my mother s house, to live with her and my two brothers. They didn t even feel like family anymore. Time marched on, however. This essay argues that the historical institution of slavery has not allowed for change to come. The emancipation has set all enslaved people free from slavery but has not made enslaved people free from the effects of slavery. The damage that the institution of slavery inflicted on the people of the South has conflicted with perusal of freedom and change. The major theme of the passage is the conflict of the historical past and the present. Although the novel presents many events of former enslaved people overcoming the shackles of slavery it also presents the drawbacks of the legacy of slavery. A.D. 41, emperor A.D. 37 41) represents a turning point in the early history of the Principate. Unfortunately, his is the most poorly documented reign of the Julio Claudian dynasty. The literary sources for these four years are meager, frequently anecdotal, and universally hostile.[[1]] As a result, not only are many of the events of the reign unclear, but Gaius himself appears more as a caricature than a real person, a crazed megalomaniac given to capricious cruelty and harebrained schemes. Their unanimous hostility renders their testimony suspect, especially since Gaius s reported behavior fits remarkably well with that of the ancient tyrant, a literary type enshrined in Greco Roman tradition centuries before his reign. Further, the only eye witness account of Gaius s behavior, Philo s Embassy to Gaius, offers little evidence of outright insanity, despite the antagonism of the author, whom Gaius treated with the utmost disrespect. Rather, he comes across as aloof, arrogant, egotistical, and cuttingly witty but not insane. The best explanation both for Gaius s behavior and the subsequent hostility of the sources is that he was an inexperienced young man thrust into a position of unlimited power, the true nature of which had been carefully disguised by its founder, Augustus. Gaius, however, saw through the disguise and began to act accordingly. Simmel employs the word stranger to label a group of people who have a certain amount of nearness and remoteness, are objective, and are socially and economically mobile within a society. In this essay I will focus on one particular aspect of the stranger; Simmel discusses the stranger s relationship with society as: despite being inorganically appended to it, the stranger is still an organic member of the group (Simmel 149). These strangers founded the American nation, and their contribution is noticeable and lasting. As Kennedy reveals, strangers add up to the strengths and weaknesses of America (Kennedy 8). A child wants to fit in so bad that if a parent do something to disrupt that image it s mental, it s emotional, and depending on what you did it can be physical. Meaning you don t have to hit a child to get your point across, and all parents do it. Embarrassing a child is a rite of passage as a parent as well as a tool that is 100 percent legal. Now, should the U.S put a ban on spanking a child? My answer for that is no. My reason for this is because as a parent, there isn t a book on parenting, you are pretty much making it up as you go, and if you believe that spanking is the right thing to do. Then it shouldn t be up to the government to tell you how to parent. However, if you are hitting a child to an extensive degree causing physical marks that look 50 shades of purple, or leaving laceration marks from a switch, then you are clearly abusing a child and should be punished accordingly. Now would a law preventing spanking interfere with parenting decisions? Yes and no. The Rise Of Digital Banking The Rise of Digital Banking People s life style has changed drastically from 20 to 30 years ago where on the street corner you can pick a fruit or some newspaper or magazine. The living pace is faster than ever and it is not stopping every single day. Nowadays on the subway underground to air flight 10,000 feet above the ground, pedestrians walking down the street to drives at red light stop, the small screen on that smart cellphone has changed the way of living for everyone. As the blood of modern economic system, financial industry has also utilized the IT technology to help itself running through each tubes of this system faster than ever. That is the rise of digital banking. In the old days, people go to bank branches in order to either make a deposit or a withdrawn to their accounts. From 14th century in Venice, Italy to 1970s in New York, United States, banking seems to the same as it never changes. There is no other options if you don t want to have your own house full of cash open for thieves and robbers. But with digital currency and online banking system, those days have long gone for younger generations only with pictures shown on the history books. The economic crisis that hit Indonesia in 1997 1998 has resulted in a deteriorate bank performance and the banking system nearly collapsed. The economy declined by 13% in 1998 and the country had to take a 43 billion USD bailout fund by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as its currency weakened, companies could not pay their loans and at least 80 banks failed or were nationalized (Setiaji and Chen, 2012). While the global economic condition is still recovering from crisis, many argue that the process is uneven and susceptible to shock (Bank Indonesia, 2015). The recovery process tends to slow down as there is weakened commodity prices and foreign investment, and these factors are inevitably affecting the growth rate of Indonesia. GDP growth is falling from 6.3% in 2007 to a forecasted growth rate of 5.5% in 2015 (Asian Development Bank, 2015). In this case, as a financial intermediary, banks have a strategic role in supporting the national economic growth. It is believed that efficient banking system is essential for the country development. Therefore, a study looking at the efficiency and profitability of Indonesian banks is substantial as it will signal the growth of the Indonesian economy in the future. According to Bloomberg, the lenders in Indonesia have the most profits among the top 20 economies in the world (Vallikappen and Moestafa, 2013). The data shows that Indonesian banks have higher profitability than other Southeast Asian (ASEAN) countries due to high demand for credit. It can be seen that banks in Indonesia tend to have high net interest margin (NIM), which demonstrates the ability of traditional bank activities to generate interest based income. From 2000 to 2009, average banks in Indonesia had the highest NIM of 5.29% compare to other ASEAN countries, including the Philippines at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. How Did Ancient Greece Influence Modern Society The Influence of Greece on Modern Society Greece and Rome have both heavily contributed to modern society, some of their contributions being architecture, knowledge, and tendencies in government. Without these two ancient civilizations, we might not be as technologically advanced as we are today. Although ancient Romans invented so many important things like aqueducts and roads, the ancient Greeks were more prominent in influencing modern culture. Some may argue that Rome has much more influence on modern societies, but the interesting thing about Rome is that it was heavily influenced by Greece. Ancient Greece was at its peak with art and religion around 800 B.C. to 500 B.C., and ancient Rome came around during early 700 B.C. Ancient Rome adapted many of the same ideals that ancient Greece had, like their polytheistic religion and their type of government. Essentially, ancient Greece was the stepping stone that began all of these ancient characteristics and influenced ancient Rome. Soil pollution involving the accumulation of excess heavy metals is toxic to humans and other mammalian life.1 The effect on animals can ac cumulate in the food chains and instigate public health concerns in the future. Normally, the exposure due to food chain transfer is chronic, however, there are rare acute cases where direct ingestion of such pollutants is poisonous.2 Given the importance of the situation, the determination of toxic heavy metals in the environment is essential. The primary source of soil pollution can be at tributed to the history of industrial/commercial activi ties in certain areas.4 We have chosen to analyze the soil at Northwestern University to highlight human factors and contributions to this pollution. Given the history of the Northwestern, there are many areas of the campus that differ in properties such as the age of buildings, the proximity to bodies of water, areas of construction, and high traffic. For use in our study, the campus was divided into areas A, B, C, D, E, F (Figure 1). Since Northwestern has been regularly undergoing construction in the past century, we pre dicted that the areas with older buildings would have different metal concentrations when compared with areas with more recent architecture. Due to the use of lead based paint in old construction, we expect that there should be a higher concentration of metals such as lead found near older buildings such as University Hall or Locy Hall in area E in comparison to area F with ... All the founders came from different religions, and found it important to have that freedom to believe in whatever the individual wants. It forever changed the course of America. Due to one diligent man, it has become a part of the American life of all citizens. This man believed strongly in what he wanted, and was persecuted for his beliefs, and kicked out of many universities and schools. He became a strong advocate, and the colony he established would change the tolerance of all people. William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, established a colony based on the ideas of religious liberty, equality, and self government which served as the foundation of America s constitutional rights in a secular government wherein all citizens may freely practice their religious belief, those ideas still impact the government s inaction concerning citizens religious practices. According to William Penn, the key principles of religious toleration were religious liberty, equality, and self government. • 44. Tale Of Two Cities Metaphors The literature that came out of the French Revolution often shares common themes of death, rebirth, and destruction. Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens is much the same way. Throughout the novel, Dickens clearly supports the revolution but also depicts the brutality of the revolutionaries. Dickens uses powerful metaphors of a sea to symbolize the revolutionaries destroying old France and the belittling name of Jacques to depict the narcissistic views of the French aristocracy to show his support for the revolution. Although Dickens clearly supports the revolutionaries cause, through metaphors of water, he highlights the sometimes animalistic nature of the revolution. In Book one, [T]he sea did what it liked and what it liked was destruction. Dickens acknowledges the inevitable nature of the revolution by comparing the sea to the French mob. Companies have used as few as four measures and as many as several hundred measures when designing a BSC performance measurement system. Based on this research, it has been found that a BSC framework using about 20 25 measures is the usual recommended best practice. In autologous BMTs the patient who is receiving the bone marrow was also the donor. Before patient received their treatment, in the form of chemotherapy, radiation, or both, stem cells were taken from the patient via bone marrow harvest or apheresis (The Johns Hopkins University, para. 10). Apheresis is a process of collecting peripheral blood stem cells, stem cells found in the bloodstream (National Marrow Donor Program, para. 1). Additional cancers are being evaluated in clinical trials for eligibility (Knight, Jackson Grusby, and White Ryan, 163). Matching Donors and Patients Finding a potential donor involves matching the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) tissue. These antigens are on the surface of special white blood cells. The HLA tissue determines the genetic makeup of a person s immune system (The Johns Hopkins University, para. 11). Doctors try to minimize the possible side effects of BMTs by using donor stem cells that match the patients as closely as possible. The overall success of a BMT depends on how closely the match between donor and patient was. Less than one third of patients will have a matched sibling; siblings are often the closest matches. In about one half of the cases it is possible to find an unrelated, matched donor. The chances of a donor matching a patient increase drastically if the two are of the same racial and ethnic background. Blood work is used to determine the level of a match between donor and patient. Donor registries are often used to find donors when there is no related match. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
