The Negative Impacts Of Hurricanes
Hurricanes are some of the costliest and most dangerous events that happen in our world. Many
historical hurricanes like Harvey, Katrina, Sandy have killed hundreds of people and cost billions of
dollars to repair the damages. But many reform bills and agencies throughout the years have either
improved humanitarian conditions or became under tremendous scrutiny by the public for its lack of
assistance. In addition, there have been many technological advances made to help people prepare
before and after the storm. Hurricanes have altered many people s lives in one way or another and
have caused people to always be prepared for potential impact.
Hurricanes have always had a tremendous impact on the history of the United States. According ...

Hurricane Katrina left more than 80% of New Orleans flooded and caused more than 1.800 deaths
(NOAA). Meteorologist and storm tracker Jim Cantore said that Katrina sets the bar for how bad a
hurricane can be. Hurricane Katrina also caused major damage to the NFL s New Orleans Saints
stadium, the Superdome, and caused many NFL officials, including the New Orleans Saints Owner
Tom Benson to speculate whether New Orleans would ever be sufficient enough to ever play an NFL
game again. Hurricane Katrina also caused a major drop in the population of New Orleans. Between
2000 and 2006, there was more than a 50% drop in population (NOAA). The NOAA said, It was one
of the largest displacements of a population since the Great Depression. Hurricane Katrina was a very
catastrophic storm that left a major impact in New Orleans, but it also affected how other agencies run
their operations.
In 1979, President Jimmy Carter created the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that
was charged with the task of responding to natural disasters that are deemed too much for local and
state officials (Wikipedia). FEMA has always been a polarizing agency, but it especially became
polarized after it joined the Department of Homeland Security in 2003. Many people wanted FEMA to
stay independent like Michael Brown, who was appointed FEMA director by George W. Bush in
January 2003, said that it would fundamentally sever FEMA from its core functions. In 2005, FEMA

A Clockwork Orange Banned
In December of 1971 Stanley Kubrick released A Clockwork Orange for the entire world to enjoy. The
movie is an adaptation of the book by the same name that was written by Anthony Burgess in 1963.
The story begins with the main character, Alex narrating while he and his fellow gang members
Georgie, Dim and Pete sit in the Korova Milk Bar discussing what violent acts they will be part of that
night. The drink of choice is milk that is laced with drugs that is dispensed from the breast of nude
statues of women that adorn the bar. After Alex and his gang leave the Korova, they go on a crime
spree that includes mugging, robbery, a gang fight, grand theft auto, breaking and entering and rape.
The rape of the woman is especially brutal; Alex and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A primary theme that runs throughout the movie is the importance of free will. This theme is deeply
entangled with Beethoven s Ninth Symphony and the idea the Ninth provides the backdrop to pivotal
violent points during the movie. Free will in the movie is often depicted as the presence of a moral
choice. This moral choice for Alex is heavily influenced by the way society and the government views
the young people of that time period. The youth are neglected not only by their parents, but by the
society who is supposed to be welcoming them with open arms and helping them become a
productive, responsible adult. John Locke suggests in his Social Contract Theory that the idea that
though men are by nature free, equal and independent , they can be subjected to the political power of
another with their consent. The purpose of this being is to maintain a set of rules for which all agree to
follow, thus creating social peace

Unesco Paper- Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System
Charles Darwin was quoted in 1842 describing the Belize Barrier Reef as the most remarkable reef in
the West Indies (Encyclopedia). This description still holds true today. The Belize Barrier Reef
Reserve System, which includes the Belize submarine shelf and its barrier reef is the world s second
largest barrier reef system and the largest reef complex in the Atlantic Caribbean area (Programme wo,
2009). What makes a reef like the Belize Barrier Reef system so special is that coral reefs are the most
diverse of all wetlands and are home to more species than any other marine ecosystem (Wells). Also
the reef system offers more varieties of coral formation than anywhere else in the Caribbean
(Encyclopedia). For people to appreciate and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More alarming though is the run off of agrochemicals and sewage pollution (Programme wo, 2009).
Another big aspect of the economy is the fishing industry, which has started to take a toll on certain
species of fish, conchs, and lobsters that live in and around the reef. Two other problems, which have
devastating effects are dredging and sand mining. Dredging and sand mining are choking the corals
that live in the reef system. All of these issues are causing devastating effects to the reef and;
therefore, is why 370 square miles of the Belize Barrier Reef system is protected by the Belize Barrier
Reef Reserve system. The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System includes seven marine reserves, 450
cayes, and three atolls (UNESCO). A marine reserve is an area of the sea that has legal protection
against fishing or development. To further the effort in 1990, the Government of Belize created the
Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU) within the fisheries department. The CZMU has created
different ministries, which are responsible for the management and preservation of different areas of
the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve system. The three main ministries involved in the coastal management

Examples Of Allusions In Secret Life Of Bees
Biblical Allusion 1 The Virgin Mary An allusion is a literary device to express a reference to another
piece of media. Allusions are used frequently in A Secret life of Bees to influence the characters
personality traits and underlying story themes. In the novel, Sue Mon Kidd uses constant allusions to
the Virgin Mary. She writes using Lily s voice, Looking back on it now, I want to say the bees were
sent to me. I want to say they showed up like the angel Gabriel appearing to the Virgin Mary, setting
events in motion I could never have guessed. Page 2. This is an example of a biblical allusion. The
Virgin Mary was the virgin mother of Jesus Christ. She was a 1st century BC Galilean Jewish woman
of Nazareth according to the New Testament and the Holy Quran. In the novel Secret Life of Bees, she
is often cited as the blessed Mary or blessed among women by the followers of Mary. How does it

Our Lady of Chains they call her, she represents the ultimate feminine mother figure, a powerful
symbolic representation of comfort, compassion, and strength. She was black as she could be, twisted

fist. It gave her a serious look, like she could straighten you out if necessary. (4.29 30). Lily grieves
the loss of her own mother. The death of Deborah Fontanel Owens have left Lily without guidance of
a monarchal figure in her life, excluding Rosaleen. Due to her need for a female figure of guidance,
she is attracted to The Black Madonna s prospective to fill that empty gap. When she visits the statue
late into the night, Lily thinks: I live in a hive of darkness, and you are my mother, I told her. You are

Alcohol Change In Sports
Alcohol had the power to affect control for a period of time to change them personally. It is very
common for people to change when they have been intoxication with alcohol, but everyone responds
differently to the effects. I observed fans of a professional soccer team change throughout the 90
minutes of the game due to becoming inebriated. The question I ask was How does alcohol change the
viewing experience along with the attitude towards the game? I observed a small group of fans that
attended Chicago Fire Soccer Team match on September 3 of 2016. The Chicago Fire played the
Philadelphia Union at the Fire s home stadium in Bridgeview Illinois Toyota Park. The group of

V for Vendetta directed by James McTeique, is a movie that shows how one person can change
government and the rules that a government should abide by. The story takes place in a futuristic
setting of Great Britain. Evey Hammond, portrayed by Natalie Portman, is approached and questioned
by the government s patrol team called Fingermen. Evey soon realizes that she is in trouble and is
rescued by the masked vigilante known as V, portrayed by Hugo Weaving. Evey, after being saved,
goes with V as he demonstrates his hatred for the fascist government by blowing up the Old Bailey.

V for Vendetta is a film that contains strong character types but diverts from the original graphic
novel; however, it still presents a powerful message about government. Strong characters can either
make or break a movie. V for Vendetta is a movie that isn t short of strong character types. V s
character type is a complex one to say the least. He is a terrorist, anarchist, philosopher and a lover of
freedom and chaos. At first people might think how the protagonist of a movie can be a terrorist and
still be good, but this factor is what sets V apart from traditional heroes. It is the fact that the world he
lives in is so corrupt and power hungry that he can destroy building and still be considered a hero. V is
the epitome of the phrase one man s terrorist is another man s freedom fighter . The character of Evey
is equally complex. In the beginning of the movie Evey is a young, shy girl who, through a series of
events, lives with V and starts to understand his ideologies, and his romance with anarchy. Evey
represents the ignorance in everyone. She never acknowledges, before meeting V, that there isn t
anything wrong with the government she lives under. Only through understanding and intimidation
does she truly realize what it s like to live without fear. Secondary characters types are equally
important. V s driving force throughout the whole movie is his vendetta against certain party leaders

Biography of Jesse Louis Jackson
Jesse Louis Jackson is one of America s one of political figures. Over the past three decades, he has
had a huge role in almost every movement for empowerment, peace, civil rights, sex equality, and
economic and social justice. Jackson has been called the conscience of the nation and the great unifier.
He is one of the best known living American leaders in the United States.
Jesse Jackson was born on October 8, 1948, in Greenwood, South Carolina. His actual name when his
was born was Jesse Louis Burns. His parents were Helen Burns and Noah Robinson, but were never
married. A year after Jesse s birth, his mother married Charles Henry Jackson, an office maintenance
worker, who later adopted him. That s how Jesse s last name became Jackson.
In 1964, Jackson graduated from college with a degree in sociology. A year after he graduated from
college, he went to Selma, Alabama, to march with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He eventually became a
worker in King s Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
In 1966, he moved his young family to Chicago. Then, he made the decision to leave school in order
to go work for Dr. King again. While King, at first, was enamored with the rudeness of the young
leader, not everyone in the organization felt the same way. Many people felt that Jackson acted too
independently, and eventually King came to dislike of him as well. Just five days before Dr. King s
assassination, King stormed out of a meeting after Jackson had repeatedly interrupted

The s Portrayal Of The Vampire
Vampirisms Portrayal
Many years ago in Wallachia, Romania, there was a price by the name of Vlad III Tepes. This man
was seen by many people of Romania as well as other parts of Europe, as a hero for his protection of
the north and south Romanians in which he was later recognized and honored in his leadership. At
first, he had many followers, but then they started to fade due to his practices of impaling his enemies,
he was labeled The Impeller. His reputation started to grow in a negative way because of the excessive
cruelty. This excessiveness of cruelty against his enemies cause a lot of blood shedding in which this
started the beginning of the vampire myth.
Throughout time, we can see that the myth of vampires has not only stayed in Romania. We see it in
literature dating back to the very beginning or discovery of this creature through the cruelty of Prince
Vlad III. However, the portrayal of the vampire did not stay the same as time went by. The portrayal
of vampirism has come long ways and changed as society did. The specific roles and details of the
vampires are crafted in relation to what society wants. However, the symbolic meaning behind the
vampire stays the same even if their role has changed; they represent what we both fear and desire as
humans: beauty, strength, and immortality. I will be analyzing the different representations and
treatments of vampirism in three different books, Dracula by Bram Stoker, Madness of Angels by Kate
Griffin, and Fledgling

What Is Frank And April s Influence On The American Dream
In Post World War Two, America shot out of the Great Depression thanks to some government
programs that helped support home mortgage loans and GI Bill for a veteran s education. During this
time, the idea of the American Dream had become an established mindset for all, to work hard with
the result of holding prosperity and success. Frank and April are a couple living in suburbia Maine,
who seem to be another couple aiming for the American Dream, but in reality both wanting to be far
away from where they are. Both of them are free spirited people who despise having their own selves

Compare and contrast Alexander II and Alexander III Essay
Compare and contrast Alexander II and Alexander III
Although they were father and son, the reigns of Alexander II and Alexander III took off in completely
different directions. Alexander II was committed to his empire by vowing to reform Russia, making it
more in line with nineteenth century western society. His son, on the other hand, was the unprepared
tsar, whose actions were literally reactions to his father s unexpected assassination. Consequently,
Alexander II went down in history as much more productive in the field of domestic policy; in dealing
with revolutionaries; and in his foreign policy than his son Alex III would ever be.
1855 was a tough time for Alexander II to take the throne. Russia was in the middle of a costly war ...

Alexander III s stance on domestic issues came as no surprise. As a youngster, he was tutored by
Konstantin Pobodonestev, a conservative, forceful man who strongly opposed Western ideology.
Pobodonestev s ideas and beliefs rubbed off on the young boy, and he blamed his father s liberal
minded reforms as the cause for his murder. Seeking to strengthen the autocracy, he gave officials the
power to declare a state of emergency, and to arrest or fine anyone unreliable. He also cleverly cut off
schools by setting up discriminatory admission rules, against women, poor families, and the Jews. He
then forced the expansion of Russian culture and language by forcing everyone in the nation to speak,
write, and think in Russian; otherwise known as Russification. Alexander III preferred having as much
control as possible over his people, something he did not have in common with his father.
Despite all the work Alexander II did toward reforming Russia, the Era of Great Reforms left one
crucial aspect unaltered: the power of the emperor. The intentional neglect of this was what kept the
reforms from realizing their true potential. This led to dissatisfaction, which encouraged repression,
terror, and most importantly: revolution. The first was the Polish Rebellion, caused by the failure of
Russian authorities to suppress Polish nationalism. Although the Poles failed, other minorities sprung

Mythology And Religion Research Paper
Mythology and Religion existed since the beginning of time and has developed along with mankind.
There are many questions and different perspectives about both Mythology and Religion. Mythology
is a collection of myths that belong to a specific cultural or religious tradition or group. Mythology
includes Mythical stories or folk tales that were passed down from many generations that bring up
Gods. Goddesses, Heroes, and the creation of life. Religion however is the belief in and practice
worshiping of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. There are various

An aspect of a higher or more powerful being or deity. For instance, Islam refers to a more powerful
being Allah, who is the creator of all things in the universe who has no partner or hand. Likewise
Greek Mythology refers to Zeus as the overlord or higher supreme God among the other Gods and
Goddesses. It is said that Zeus is the great deity of the universe, the ruler of heaven and Earth, a
personification of the laws of nature, and the father to all men. In addition, both Mythology and
Religion influence a person s decisions and actions based on his/her belief. A crystal clear example is
Christianity and Greek Mythology. Since both lead to an assumption of an afterlife, it affects the
action and decision based on the person s belief. Christianity refers to an after life where mankind is
judged based on their doings and beliefs during their life. Christians believe that if one lives a good
life and believed that Jesus Christ was the son of God, that one will receives God s glory and mercy in
heaven for all eternity. On the other hand, if a person does not meet those requirements, he or she is
doomed and sent to spend all eternity in hell. Similarly, it said that in Greek Mythology only Heroes,
people who have a direct connection to the Gods, and righteous people go to the isle of the Blessed,
which is considered heaven. With that said, there is an opposite place known as Tarterus where
criminals and wrong doers are placed. Another similarity between Mythology and Religion is that both
have deities that usually represent good and evil. Zoroastrianism refers to an eternal cosmic battle
between Ohrmazd and Ahriman, representing Good and Evil. Zoroastrian Scriptures describe this
conflict as happening universally but also emphasizes that it is happening within every individual
person as well. Correspondingly in Islam, In Islam there is a notion of Jihad, which translates, to To

Beloved, By Toni Morrison
My independent reading book, Beloved by Toni Morrison, was so full of heavy emotion. I really
admire Toni Morrison s use of language. She gives so much detail that I feel like I am there
experiencing everything that Sethe is experiencing. She creates an irie suspense that bad things have
happened in Sethe s past and reveals them one by one as Sethe remember and lives through these
memories. Morrison beautifully conveys the message that the past cannot be forgotten, it is always to
be with us no matter how much we say we have forgotten it. The horrid memories that we put to death
will always hurt, because anything dead coming back to life hurts. (Morrison) The characters in the
book, especially the women, are so strong. The unbearable weight

Rhetorical Analysis Of Charlotte Perkins Gilman
In literature, there are many different components that create a timeless and classic text, such as
personification, imagery, or symbolism. In some texts an author uses overbearing amounts of imagery
to give us a vivid description of what is happening in the story, in others an author may give very little
visual details, but instead incorporate countless allusions to help the reader better understand their
story by alluding other popular works. Through the use of themes and symbols, however, an author
can show how he or she, or the society at the time of their writing, views a certain social movement or
item. Effectively using multiple literary techniques makes a work of literature, not only satisfying to
read, but it also gives it a sense of importance in understanding exactly why that piece was written,
because every work of literature has its own reason for being made. Charlotte Perkins Gilman is one
such author that has used themes and symbols to effectively give a certain story she wrote a large
amount of importance in furthering her ideology with society and reformation at the time. The Yellow
Wallpaper uses the symbolism of the story s title, confinement to the room, and the narrator s husband
to reveal different themes about society at the time the book was written along with why Gilman wrote
the story as she did. Gilman wrote The Yellow Wallpaper in 1890, and it was officially published by
The New England Magazine in January 1892. During this time

War Of The Worlds Analysis
The War of the Worlds (1953) is science fiction, but shot in pseudo documentary style using real
military footage interlaced with the Martian invasion force that is destroying all the majors cites
around the world. The display of the uniquely, non saucer shapes of the strange Martian ships on the
rampage, alarming news broadcast, and images of panic stricken public fleeing for very lives, only
adds to the desperate battle for humanity on a global scale, and a sense of utter realism and terror.
Every shot is conveying a message and emotion, even at the end of the film, the doom laden finale in a
disintegrating church, all very efficiently handled by director Byron Haskin (Schneider 58), implies
that all hope is lost, the end of the world is at hand, and hundreds seek refuge in churches, praying for
a miracle to save them, and as faith would have it, one comes.

I choose for my reseach essay assignment the poem In Reference to Her Children, 23 June, 1659 by
Anne Bradstreet as the earliest Native American writing, and the first in a long line of American poets

to take place. However, health care professionals have a much higher rate of experiencing workplace
violence than other professions. This is largely due to the type of patients that health care

mental illness, patients presenting to the emergency department, and other patients in acute care

Tuskegee Experiment Essay
Abstract The Tuskegee syphilis experiment was an infamous clinical study conducted between 1932
1972 in Macon Country, Alabama by the U.S Public Health Service. The purpose was to study the
natural progression of untreated syphilis in rural African American men who thought they were
receiving free health care from the U.S government; about four hundred African American men were
denied. The doctors that were involved in this study had a shifted mindset; they were called racist
monsters ; for the most part, doctors and civil servants simply did their jobs. Some merely followed
orders, others worked for the glory of science (Heller) The men that were used for the study got

Essay on Absolutism
Absolutism During the pre Enlightenment period, France and England went through very dramatic
and very different government change. At the beginning of this time period, England had achieved
relative stability, due largely in part to Elizabeth I long and successful reign. On the other hand, France
had been subjected to numerous civil and religious wars, therefore leading to instability. French
absolutism was largely a result of these crises and tragedies, with the country recognizing the need for
a strong, powerful leader, which they found during the long and successful reign of Louis XIV. In
England however, many problems arose due to a series of short and incapable rulers, beginning with
James I and ending with James II. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to do this, he need to have control of three key elements: the military, tax collection, and the
judicial system, all of which had been controlled locally. In order to seize these powers, Louis needed
to create a bureaucratic system answerable only to the king. Essentially, Louis had to seize power
from the hands of the nobles. Louis succeeded in creating a national tax collection process, where
taxes were paid directly to the king rather then the nobles. This way, by the end of his reign, Louis was
collecting 80% of the taxes due to him whereas before, with the nobles acting as middlemen, only
30% of the taxes due to the king were actually received. In order to placate the nobles, he exempted
them from taxes, thus appealing to their senses while stripping them of their power. The nobles began
to believe that the only way to achieve a stable and prosperous state and secure their own interests was
to support Louis monarchy. Louis used much of this money to create a centralized military of
professional soldiers and gradually took the military power from the individual regions. Military
allegiance was due only to the king, so the danger of military rebellion was greatly reduced. He took
away regional independence by dividing the country into six generalités, each one governed by an
appointed member of the upper class rather then a noble. These governors were required to spend a

Introduction
1.1. Motivation
The topic of this project is hardware implementation of communication platform for consensus based
control in power systems. Because of the capacity of existing electric power distribution is nearly full,
it is a trend to develop grid technology and enhance the intelligent level of power system [1].
Therefore, it is necessary to integrate and coordinate distributed generation (DG) effectively.
Development of smart grid is becoming a popular and inevitable trend. The development of
distributed generation has changed the traditional mode of power supply and utilization. And
intelligent control of electrical devices can minimize the power consumption and reduce the operating
cost. It is much economic and energy conservation.
However, there is a factor that limits the present implementation of existing hierarchical control in
smart grid. Because the voltage in each DG s terminal is different, the accuracy of reactive power
sharing is low [2]. Based on this problem, this project

Soldiers At The United States Army
Soldiers Preparation in the U.S. Army Similarly, United States Army has extreme concern with the
specific preparation of Soldiers. Therefore, it has developed a program called Physical Readiness
Training (PRT). The program s goal is to train Soldiers to be ready to work in hard duties and sustain
activity in assignments or in combat roles (FM 7 22, 2012). The PRT has a high concern with Soldiers
health, presenting preparation, recovery, strength and mobility, posture and body mechanics activities.
The PRT has three phases to develop in Soldiers the correct physical condition: the conditioning
phase, the sustaining phase, and the reconditioning phase. First, the initial conditioning phase is
responsible for the practice part in order to develop the movement skills the correct way and prepare
Soldiers for the next phase. The second phase is the sustaining phase. This focus phase is to achieve in
Soldiers a higher level of physical readiness required in specific tasks and maintain the level achieved.
The last phase is the reconditioning phase. During this phase, the intention is to restore the previous
physical fitness levels of Soldiers (FM 7 22, 2012). During PRT phases, there is concern in following
the principles of the PRT, such as precision, progression, and integration, in order to provide all
advantages of the program. Furthermore, the PRT tries to develop the endurance, the strength, and the
mobility, considered fundamental components to the success of the

Ashurnasirpal II
Ashurnasirpal II was the king of the Neo Assyrian Empire. He was known to be ruthless,
warmongering, and violent as a leader. Under his reign, the empire was expanded and was brought
whole by eliminating the rebels against his ruling. Due to his cruel nature, Ashurnasirpal II also made
anyone who wanted to rebel against him cower in fear. Aaccording to the Ancient History
Encyclopedia, it was recorded that in the rebel city of Tela, Ashurnasirpal II flayed the rebel leader
and nailed his skin to the wall. This barbaric method of torture and execution would make his enemies
tremble in fear. However, this cruelty also allowed Ashurnasirpal II to maintain order within the
empire. According to the historian Marc Van De Mieroop, wherever Ashurnasirpal II governed, there
were peace and justice, which shows that his cruelty was effective in establishing order. Also, he was
known to be a great diplomat and was able to establish stability with treaties with the Babylon and
kingdom of Israel without using military forces. Other than his conquests, Ashurnasirpal II ... Show

catastrophe. In Azaryahu Maoz s article, Replacing Memory: The Reorientation of Buchenwald, she
states Buchenwald is, the place of demise of 51,000 dead and of the heroic resistance of 21,000

happens, it either brings people closer or drives them apart. In Eliezer s case, it creates a strong bond

Eliezer develops caregiver burden leaving him with feelings of resentment. In Night, Wiesel shows
how the Holocaust transforms his and his father s nonexistent relationship to becoming inseparable
and switching roles causing Eliezer to have anger towards his father. Before they know what is to
transpire, their relationship is nonchalant showing little emotion and support. Eliezer s father is a well
respected man in his community and has a better connection with them than his family: He rarely
displays his feelings, not even within his family, and was more involved with the welfare of others
than with that of his own kid (Wiesel 4). Being needed often leaves him little opportunity to spend
with his household. He also does not approve of Eliezer s wish to study Kabbalah: First you must
study the basic subjects, those you are able to comprehend (Wiesel 4). He thinks Eliezer is too young

The Nature Of Perceived Value
The nature of perceived value remains a topic of debate. Various researchers have sought to enumerate
the categories of customer value. These include Zeithaml (1988, p. 14) who describes four forms of
value (a) value is low price, (b) value is whatever one wants in a product, (c) value is the quality that
the consumer receives for the price paid, and (d) value is what the consumer gets for what he or she
gives.
Holbrook (1996, p. 138) views customer value as an interactive relativistic preference experience:
a) Interactive: in contrast to the position advocated by extreme subjectivists or extreme objectivists,
customer value entails an interaction between some subject (a customer) and some object (a product).
Essentially, this interactionist position maintains that value depends on the characteristics of some
physical or mental object but cannot occur without the involvement of some subject who appreciates
it.
b) Relativistic: This means that customer value is (i) comparative (among objects), (ii) personal
(across people), and (iii) situational (specific to the context). To detail, it is comparative in that one
must make utility comparisons among objects rather than among people; in other words, customers
perception of the value of a product is not formed in isolation from other offerings. In addition, value
varies from one individual to another. Further, value is situational in that it depends on the context in
which the evaluative judgment occurs. Hence, the standards

involvement in Indochina. The size and breadth of the attack were stunning enough, but the images

Television reports showed the fighting on the embassy grounds, chaos in the streets of Saigon, the
assassination of an NLF prisoner by a South Vietnamese general on a Saigon street, and pitched
battles in other cities such as Hue, while the Associated Press reported an American officer in the
village of Ben Tre stating that, we had to destroy it in order to save it. As Kathleen Turner, author of

close to the Saigon based news teams. The proximity of the battle guaranteed extensive coverage by

Global And Being Known As A Successful International...
Going global and being known as a successful international corporate is an impressive achievement
that almost all companies aim to attain. To successfully convert a business from domestic to
international, a firm will need to consider a new set of factors that might not necessarily affect a local
only company. Companies use a number of tactics to achieve their global expansion plans, including
exporting goods, forming strategic partnerships, licensing, acquiring businesses and building new
facilities in multiple countries. Often, a company may need to try out few strategies in order to find
the perfect fit. Many global expansion failures results from companies temptation/decision to apply
their domestic management approach to global operations. Grolsch, like other companies, encountered
many impasses during their international expansions. Nonetheless, much can be learned from Grolsch,
successes and failures.
 Grolsch s global strategy is based on the MABA process that is described in the case. What is your
opinion of the MABA process?
While there are great potentials in exploring new opportunities overseas, there can also be
considerable risks associated in doing business in an unfamiliar environment. Companies need a
comprehensive approach to assess the benefits and potential pitfalls in going global. Grolsch does so
through its MABA (Market Attractiveness, Business Assessment) framework. The MABA, as
described in the case, is used by Grolsch s employees to judge the

Essay about Uncle Tom s Cabin and the Grief of Harriet...
Overcoming the death of a loved one can be one of life s most difficult tasks, especially when that loss
involves a parent or a child. Author and abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe grieved over death as both
mother and child. When she was only five years old, her mother Roxana Foote Beecher, died of
tuberculosis. Later at age 38, she lost her infant son Charley to an outbreak of cholera. Together these
two traumatic events amplified her condemnation of slavery and ultimately influenced the writing of
one of America s most controversial novels, Uncle Tom s Cabin.
On June 14, 1811 Harriet Beecher Stowe became the seventh child born into the religiously devout

peculiarly restful and peace giving... Her union of spirit with God, unruffled and unbroken even from
early childhood seemed to impart to her an equilibrium and healthful placidity that no earthly reverses
ever disturbed (qtd. in Wagenknecht 23). Harriet also believed that her mother s memory and example
had more influence in molding her family, in deterring from evil and exciting to good, than the living
presence of many mothers (qtd. in Hedrick, Perfection ).
Those who read Uncle Tom s Cabin will find the death of Stowe s mother memorialized in the death
of Eva St. Clare. Stowe claimed that the pain she felt as a child from losing her own mother helped her
identify with the pain felt by African American children and mothers sold apart under slavery. Stowe
later revealed the intense connection she possessed for the character of little Eva. She said that writing
about Eva s death affected [her] so deeply that [she] could not write another word for two weeks...
(qtd. in Wagenknecht 165).
In 1832, Harriet s father moved the family to the frontier city of Cincinnati, where he became the
president of Lane Seminary. The school was well known for its progressive attitudes and before long it
evolved into a center for abolitionists. One of the free thinkers employed there was Calvin

It also indicates the ignorance of the public as they are not fully informed about the tragedy of war so
they have no idea of the circumstances of war as most photographs are not being published.
The darkness in his room, in his darkness he is finally alone , is a reflection of his depressed feeling in
remembrance of the awful events he has witnessed. The horrific experience is so long lasting, which
will dwell in his memory continually as represents by run on lines.
The simile chosen to compare the photographer with a priest preparing to intone a mass is effective.
The reader can clearly picture the inside of a catholic church in their mind, with red lights glowing
softly. It also assures that what the photographer is doing is holy and heroic as danger and risks are
involved, fields which explode beneath the feet of running children in a nightmare heat. But the
photographer still accepts the challenge.
As for the sound effect, the alliteration of the s sound, with spools of suffering set out in ordered rows
, illustrates the silent and isolated atmosphere the photographer is in the photographic studio. With
eyes rhyming with cries , it heightens our sympathy towards the victims in war as it appeals to both
the readers sense of hearing and seeing. Not only does the suffering turn out to be more descriptive

The Basement Room, By Graham Greene
Maya Angelou once said, We are only as blind as we want to be. This is not referring to literal
blindness, but instead to the human tendency of to ignore, or be blind to, the consequences of their
actions in relation to the good of other people. Renowned author Graham Greene explores this theme
from what some people believe to be a Christian perspective in his many of his works. Although two
of Graham Greene s short stories, The Basement Room and The Destructors, are neither clearly
redemptive or biblical, it is very possible that the stories are written from a Christian worldview
because of their parallels to the nature and consequences of sin, and Greene s criticism of selfish
human behavior.

home. Once inside, T. learns the weaknesses of the place and figures out exactly how to ruin it,
similarly to how all humans can be killed by their weaknesses. Old Misery never did anything against
the boy. Instead, he acted kindly towards T. when he welcomes him inside. Like Satan, T. is aggressive
and angry in nature, and feels prompted to completely sabotage Old Misery s life for his own personal
enjoyment.
Similarly to T. s type in The Destructors, Greene explores the selfishness of humans in the character of
Mrs. Baines in The Basement Room. Mrs. Baines, Philip s housekeeper, corrupts Philip by forcing
him to keep her secrets and bribing him to help her conspire against her husband. After Philip lets it

Big Idea Case Study
Lean Thinking:
Step 1 Value:
In an extremely competitive toy industry; Michael Collins came up with the BIG Idea group (BIG).
The purpose of this group is to find a way to exist in this industry, while making profits and achieving
objectives. The objective is to process the idea as a resource and transform a valuable product into a
highly profitable business (Economies of scales). According to Collins, The basic concept (company
Policy) was to create a company that would tap into the incredible entrepreneurial power of legions of
individual inventors. BIG saw that the players in the market were lacking imagination and innovation.
Thus the group saw the opportunity to enter the toy industry and attempt to capture market shares and

Pull The pull approach is how quickly a company fills a customer s demand for a product or service.
BIG idea group had the ability to produce the product and present the product to the buyer in the most
cost efficient way possible. BIG ideas were pulled as follows:
Companies outsourcing their unsolicited ideas to BIG. These companies did not have the time or staff
to seek out potential good ideas. (Linkage)
BIG draws on their existing knowledge on what the idea buying companies are looking for in a new
product.
Take for example the case of Tiny Totes. A woman and her two friends had a great idea that needed
further development. With the help and knowledge of BIG group, they were able to refine this product
and were able to market this product to make it a reality.

Patents Process
A patent for an invention is the grant of a property right to the inventor, issued by the United States
Patent and Trademark Office. Generally, the term of a new patent is 20 years from the date on which
the application for the patent was filed in the United States or, in special cases, from the date an earlier
related application was filed, subject to the payment of maintenance fees. U.S. patent grants are
effective only within the United States, U.S. territories, and U.S. possessions. Under certain

Why Did Chartism Fail
Question How far would you agree with the view that Chartism was a glorious failure?
This essay will be looking at the aims and extent the chartists went to in order to bring about reform
within a politically corrupt parliament, whilst ensuring that all classes of society were in possession of
their equal, political and social rights.
The electoral system in the early 19th century was neither a representative nor balanced system,
elections were open to corruption and with only a small minority of adult males being eligible to vote
if they were land owners (Avery, N.D). Parliament were against reform and didn t want the status quo
upset, however with the rising of new industrial cities and towns there was a creation of the middle
class who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lovett pursued in increasing emphasis on educating the working population whilst increasing trade
union activity and support for the Anti Corn Law League (Brown, 2000, p195), whereas O Connor
pursued the Chartist Land Plan by purchasing land through shares, he had ideas to relocate the
working class to ease the unemployment situation and give the settlers freedom and self respect
(Murphy et al, 1997, p120). As depression hit all the major industrial areas leading to high masses of
unemployment, this provoked O Connor into action again who at this time was elected as MP for
Nottingham; he drew up plans for the relaunch of a national convention and the presentation of a new
petition to Parliament (Murphy et al, 1997, p118), however the authorities were uneasy with the
Chartist s plans to present a third petition, there were fears that the revolutions sweeping across
Europe would affect Britain and they knew that some Chartists were in touch with European radicals.
In addition the Chartists hijacked a middle class radical meeting to abolish income tax which resulted
in police intervention and three days of rioting, although the crimes were committed by non chartists
the chartists were classed as being responsible by association (Brown, 2000,

Examples Of Classism In The Outsiders
Classism was a big part of the 60s and with Ponyboy and the gang, it comes into play in more than
one way. The Outsiders, based in the 1960s Oklahoma, is about two gangs, the Greasers and the
Socials. The Greasers were lower class, lower income people who were relatively rough around the
edges while the Socials were the West side rich kids who went around getting drunk and jumping
Greasers. The book is about the conflicts that these two groups have, either with each other or inside
of their own group. In S.E. Hinton s novel, The Outsiders, many of the conflicts and hardships in the
community are caused by the Socials (Socs). The killing of Bob had many different sides but from the
side of the Greasers, it was what they had to do. One example of this was that Johnny was justified in
killing Bob. In the text it states, They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you (pg. 50
pdf). This shows that Johnny killed the Bob in self defense and that if they hadn t been drowning
Pony, he probably wouldn t have done it. The text explains, Johnny getting ... Show more content on

For example, the Socials were responsible for starting the rumble. The text states, Darry turned to see
who it was, and Paul swung a hard right to the jaw that would have felled anyone but Darry. The
rumble was on (pg. 122 pdf). This shows that the first shot of the rumble was taken by a Soc so
therefor, they were the ones who started the rumble. Another example would be that the Socials were
responsible for Johnny s death. The text also states, I held him like Soda had held him the day we
found him lying in the lot (pg. 64 pdf). If you look in the book, you will see that none of what
happened would have happened if it hadn t been for the Socs trying to beat up Johnny and Ponyboy. It
really wouldn t have been possible to prevent the rumble or Johnny s death, especially with the Socs in
the situation that they are

Vitamin D s Observation Essay
Vista, California has this amazing Mexican restaurant downtown off of Main Street. She took the local
bus near her apartment to this destination. This restaurant was Clarissa s favorite establishment
because of their homemade tortilla chips, salsa, and blended margaritas with salt atop its rim. As soon
as she stepped off that bus, carefully with a pair of black ankle boots; suede, she stood for a few
moments taking in the day and the warmth of the sun. Vitamin D from the sun was important to her.
There were a few onlookers whose eyes crossed her path from the morning café across the way. The
onlookers would have seen that Clarissa was modeling her best San Diego winter wear. Her ensemble

Viola Wallace in Brooklyn, New York. Through his early elementary school days, young Christopher
was known for misbehaving, and was kicked out of most of the schools he attended. This led him to a

Reflection About God
God, as we all know, can be the most loving being since he is love. All throughout the old testament
we see different places where God has shown his love and compassion towards people. One example
of this is when God makes Adam and Eve. God gives them dominion over the earth and everything on
it.
God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them.
28 God blessed them, saying: Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over
the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth. 29 God also
said: See, I give you every seed bearing plant all over the earth and every tree that has seed bearing
fruit on it to be your food; 30 and to all the animals of the land, all the birds of the air, and all the
living creatures that crawl on the ground, I give all the green plants for food. And so it happened. 31
God looked at everything he had made, and he found it very good. Evening came, and morning
followed the sixth day.
As you can see God is willing enough to give an entire planet to two humans who he has created. That
is a lot of love and trust to give someone. God is also willing to give Adam and Eve everything to their
hands. He loves them so much that he does not want them to suffer and work for everything they will
need. This is one example is God s love towards people. Another example of God s love is when God
allows Abraham and Sarah, who can not have children

Magic In Baseball

George Gmelch talked about baseball sport and how supernatural forces influence
Baseball players occupationally. Baseball magic has been observed many years ago,

Avoid bad luck and failure. George Gmelch defines magic that it s a practicing
Method which becomes a habit or a belief for ballplayers. Most of players use magic

Malinowski s theory illustrates that
fielding is without uncertainty and they depend on their sport skills. Where On the
other side, hitting and pitching have to contain uncertainty and lack of success
therefore, the ballplayers use some rituals to get good luck. Skinner explains his
theory by pigeons behaviors, it shows pigeons have the particular action until the food
get arrived so They learn to associate particular behaviors with the reward of being
given food. Same as ballplayers, they practice their actions before the game to get a
successful performance. There are several areas of U.S. life where magic is
practices, some of office workers drink coffee before they go to work in order to
concentrate and do better at work then, they started to drink coffee each time they go
to work because there has been an effective relationship between their performance
and drinking coffee which eventually become ritual. Also, many Cheerleaders at
football games intend to wear the same shoes every game to do best movements and

Many historical hurricanes like Harvey, Katrina, Sandy have killed hundreds of people and cost billions of dollars to repair the damages. But many reform bills and agencies throughout the years have either improved humanitarian conditions or became under tremendous scrutiny by the public for its lack of assistance. In addition, there have been many technological advances made to help people prepare before and after the storm. Hurricanes have altered many people s lives in one way or another and have caused people to always be prepared for potential impact. Hurricane Katrina left more than 80% of New Orleans flooded and caused more than 1.800 deaths (NOAA). Meteorologist and storm tracker Jim Cantore said that Katrina sets the bar for how bad a hurricane can be. Hurricane Katrina also caused major damage to the NFL s New Orleans Saints stadium, the Superdome, and caused many NFL officials, including the New Orleans Saints Owner Tom Benson to speculate whether New Orleans would ever be sufficient enough to ever play an NFL game again. Hurricane Katrina also caused a major drop in the population of New Orleans. Between 2000 and 2006, there was more than a 50% drop in population (NOAA). The NOAA said, It was one of the largest displacements of a population since the Great Depression. Hurricane Katrina was a very catastrophic storm that left a major impact in New Orleans, but it also affected how other agencies run their operations. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter created the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that was charged with the task of responding to natural disasters that are deemed too much for local and state officials (Wikipedia). FEMA has always been a polarizing agency, but it especially became polarized after it joined the Department of Homeland Security in 2003. Many people wanted FEMA to stay independent like Michael Brown, who was appointed FEMA director by George W. Bush in January 2003, said that it would fundamentally sever FEMA from its core functions. This theme is deeply entangled with Beethoven s Ninth Symphony and the idea the Ninth provides the backdrop to pivotal violent points during the movie. Free will in the movie is often depicted as the presence of a moral choice. This moral choice for Alex is heavily influenced by the way society and the government views the young people of that time period. The youth are neglected not only by their parents, but by the society who is supposed to be welcoming them with open arms and helping them become a productive, responsible adult. This description still holds true today. The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, which includes the Belize submarine shelf and its barrier reef is the world s second largest barrier reef system and the largest reef complex in the Atlantic Caribbean area (Programme wo, 2009). What makes a reef like the Belize Barrier Reef system so special is that coral reefs are the most diverse of all wetlands and are home to more species than any other marine ecosystem (Wells). More alarming though is the run off of agrochemicals and sewage pollution (Programme wo, 2009). Another big aspect of the economy is the fishing industry, which has started to take a toll on certain species of fish, conchs, and lobsters that live in and around the reef. Two other problems, which have devastating effects are dredging and sand mining. Dredging and sand mining are choking the corals that live in the reef system. All of these issues are causing devastating effects to the reef and; therefore, is why 370 square miles of the Belize Barrier Reef system is protected by the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve system. The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System includes seven marine reserves, 450 cayes, and three atolls (UNESCO). A marine reserve is an area of the sea that has legal protection against fishing or development. To further the effort in 1990, the Government of Belize created the Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU) within the fisheries department. Allusions are used frequently in A Secret life of Bees to influence the characters personality traits and underlying story themes. In the novel, Sue Mon Kidd uses constant allusions to the Virgin Mary. She writes using Lily s voice, Looking back on it now, I want to say the bees were sent to me. I want to say they showed up like the angel Gabriel appearing to the Virgin Mary, setting events in motion I could never have guessed. Page 2. This is an example of a biblical allusion. The Virgin Mary was the virgin mother of Jesus Christ. She was a 1st century BC Galilean Jewish woman of Nazareth according to the New Testament and the Holy Quran. Strong characters can either make or break a movie. V for Vendetta is a movie that isn t short of strong character types. V s character type is a complex one to say the least. He is a terrorist, anarchist, philosopher and a lover of freedom and chaos. At first people might think how the protagonist of a movie can be a terrorist and still be good, but this factor is what sets V apart from traditional heroes. It is the fact that the world he lives in is so corrupt and power hungry that he can destroy building and still be considered a hero. V is the epitome of the phrase one man s terrorist is another man s freedom fighter . The character of Evey is equally complex. In the beginning of the movie Evey is a young, shy girl who, through a series of events, lives with V and starts to understand his ideologies, and his romance with anarchy. • 12. The s Portrayal Of The Vampire Vampirisms Portrayal Many years ago in Wallachia, Romania, there was a price by the name of Vlad III Tepes. This man was seen by many people of Romania as well as other parts of Europe, as a hero for his protection of the north and south Romanians in which he was later recognized and honored in his leadership. At first, he had many followers, but then they started to fade due to his practices of impaling his enemies, he was labeled The Impeller. His reputation started to grow in a negative way because of the excessive cruelty. This excessiveness of cruelty against his enemies cause a lot of blood shedding in which this started the beginning of the vampire myth. Throughout time, we can see that the myth of vampires has not only stayed in Romania. We see it in literature dating back to the very beginning or discovery of this creature through the cruelty of Prince Vlad III. However, the portrayal of the vampire did not stay the same as time went by. The portrayal of vampirism has come long ways and changed as society did. The specific roles and details of the vampires are crafted in relation to what society wants. However, the symbolic meaning behind the vampire stays the same even if their role has changed; they represent what we both fear and desire as humans: beauty, strength, and immortality. • 14. Compare and contrast Alexander II and Alexander III Essay Compare and contrast Alexander II and Alexander III Although they were father and son, the reigns of Alexander II and Alexander III took off in completely different directions. Alexander II was committed to his empire by vowing to reform Russia, making it more in line with nineteenth century western society. His son, on the other hand, was the unprepared tsar, whose actions were literally reactions to his father s unexpected assassination. Consequently, Alexander II went down in history as much more productive in the field of domestic policy; in dealing with revolutionaries; and in his foreign policy than his son Alex III would ever be. 1855 was a tough time for Alexander II to take the throne. Russia was in the middle of a costly war ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alexander III s stance on domestic issues came as no surprise. As a youngster, he was tutored by Konstantin Pobodonestev, a conservative, forceful man who strongly opposed Western ideology. Pobodonestev s ideas and beliefs rubbed off on the young boy, and he blamed his father s liberal minded reforms as the cause for his murder. Seeking to strengthen the autocracy, he gave officials the power to declare a state of emergency, and to arrest or fine anyone unreliable. He also cleverly cut off schools by setting up discriminatory admission rules, against women, poor families, and the Jews. He then forced the expansion of Russian culture and language by forcing everyone in the nation to speak, write, and think in Russian; otherwise known as Russification. Alexander III preferred having as much control as possible over his people, something he did not have in common with his father. Despite all the work Alexander II did toward reforming Russia, the Era of Great Reforms left one crucial aspect unaltered: the power of the emperor. The intentional neglect of this was what kept the reforms from realizing their true potential. This led to dissatisfaction, which encouraged repression, terror, and most importantly: revolution. The first was the Polish Rebellion, caused by the failure of Russian authorities to suppress Polish nationalism. Although the Poles failed, other minorities sprung up for their voice ... • 16. Mythology And Religion Research Paper Mythology and Religion existed since the beginning of time and has developed along with mankind. There are many questions and different perspectives about both Mythology and Religion. Mythology is a collection of myths that belong to a specific cultural or religious tradition or group. Mythology includes Mythical stories or folk tales that were passed down from many generations that bring up Gods. Goddesses, Heroes, and the creation of life. Religion however is the belief in and practice worshiping of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. There are various types of Religions that results in different religious perspectives and opinions. Many people believe that Mythology and Religion have no connections, that they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An aspect of a higher or more powerful being or deity. For instance, Islam refers to a more powerful being Allah, who is the creator of all things in the universe who has no partner or hand. Likewise Greek Mythology refers to Zeus as the overlord or higher supreme God among the other Gods and Goddesses. It is said that Zeus is the great deity of the universe, the ruler of heaven and Earth, a personification of the laws of nature, and the father to all men. In addition, both Mythology and Religion influence a person s decisions and actions based on his/her belief. A crystal clear example is Christianity and Greek Mythology. Since both lead to an assumption of an afterlife, it affects the action and decision based on the person s belief. Christianity refers to an after life where mankind is judged based on their doings and beliefs during their life. Christians believe that if one lives a good life and believed that Jesus Christ was the son of God, that one will receives God s glory and mercy in heaven for all eternity. On the other hand, if a person does not meet those requirements, he or she is doomed and sent to spend all eternity in hell. Similarly, it said that in Greek Mythology only Heroes, people who have a direct connection to the Gods, and righteous people go to the isle of the Blessed, which is considered heaven. My civilian friends keep asking me why I m so mad, because most of them enjoyed watching it. Simply put it s because the movie is full of lies, exaggerations, and ugly people. But it s a movie they say, of course it s not realistic . That s strange.. because the back of The Hurt Locker box says Powerfully Realistic . Yet this movie is about as far from realism that a movie can be (this claim includes all movies about time travel, and vampires, but excludes any movies starring the Wayans brothers). • 21. Rhetorical Analysis Of Charlotte Perkins Gilman In literature, there are many different components that create a timeless and classic text, such as personification, imagery, or symbolism. In some texts an author uses overbearing amounts of imagery to give us a vivid description of what is happening in the story, in others an author may give very little visual details, but instead incorporate countless allusions to help the reader better understand their story by alluding other popular works. Through the use of themes and symbols, however, an author can show how he or she, or the society at the time of their writing, views a certain social movement or item. Effectively using multiple literary techniques makes a work of literature, not only satisfying to read, but it also gives it a sense of importance in understanding exactly why that piece was written, because every work of literature has its own reason for being made. Charlotte Perkins Gilman is one such author that has used themes and symbols to effectively give a certain story she wrote a large amount of importance in furthering her ideology with society and reformation at the time. The Yellow Wallpaper uses the symbolism of the story s title, confinement to the room, and the narrator s husband to reveal different themes about society at the time the book was written along with why Gilman wrote the story as she did. Louis succeeded in creating a national tax collection process, where taxes were paid directly to the king rather then the nobles. This way, by the end of his reign, Louis was collecting 80% of the taxes due to him whereas before, with the nobles acting as middlemen, only 30% of the taxes due to the king were actually received. • 33. The Nature Of Perceived Value The nature of perceived value remains a topic of debate. Various researchers have sought to enumerate the categories of customer value. These include Zeithaml (1988, p. 14) who describes four forms of value (a) value is low price, (b) value is whatever one wants in a product, (c) value is the quality that the consumer receives for the price paid, and (d) value is what the consumer gets for what he or she gives. Holbrook (1996, p. 138) views customer value as an interactive relativistic preference experience: a) Interactive: in contrast to the position advocated by extreme subjectivists or extreme objectivists, customer value entails an interaction between some subject (a customer) and some object (a product). Essentially, this interactionist position maintains that value depends on the characteristics of some physical or mental object but cannot occur without the involvement of some subject who appreciates it. b) Relativistic: This means that customer value is (i) comparative (among objects), (ii) personal (across people), and (iii) situational (specific to the context). To detail, it is comparative in that one must make utility comparisons among objects rather than among people; in other words, customers perception of the value of a product is not formed in isolation from other offerings. In addition, value varies from one individual to another. Further, value is situational in that it depends on the context in which the evaluative judgment occurs. Hence, the standards ... Her union of spirit with God, unruffled and unbroken even from early childhood seemed to impart to her an equilibrium and healthful placidity that no earthly reverses ever disturbed (qtd. in Wagenknecht 23). Harriet also believed that her mother s memory and example had more influence in molding her family, in deterring from evil and exciting to good, than the living presence of many mothers (qtd. in Hedrick, Perfection ). Those who read Uncle Tom s Cabin will find the death of Stowe s mother memorialized in the death of Eva St. Clare. Stowe claimed that the pain she felt as a child from losing her own mother helped her identify with the pain felt by African American children and mothers sold apart under slavery. Stowe later revealed the intense connection she possessed for the character of little Eva. She said that writing about Eva s death affected [her] so deeply that [she] could not write another word for two weeks... (qtd. in Wagenknecht 165). In 1832, Harriet s father moved the family to the frontier city of Cincinnati, where he became the president of Lane Seminary. War Photographer by Carol Ann Duffy Essay War Photographer by Carol Ann Duffy War Photographer by Carol Ann Duffy is based on a war photographer who has experienced and witnessed the reality of war. The war photographer has returned to his quite home in England from his latest job. He develops the spools of film, he took in the frontline. As he organizes the pictures, he remembers the terrifying situation he is in, A stranger s features faintly start to twist before his eyes a half formed ghost. It also indicates the ignorance of the public as they are not fully informed about the tragedy of war so they have no idea of the circumstances of war as most photographs are not being published. The darkness in his room, in his darkness he is finally alone , is a reflection of his depressed feeling in remembrance of the awful events he has witnessed. The horrific experience is so long lasting, which will dwell in his memory continually as represents by run on lines. The simile chosen to compare the photographer with a priest preparing to intone a mass is effective. The reader can clearly picture the inside of a catholic church in their mind, with red lights glowing softly. It also assures that what the photographer is doing is holy and heroic as danger and risks are involved, fields which explode beneath the feet of running children in a nightmare heat. But the photographer still accepts the challenge. As for the sound effect, the alliteration of the s sound, with spools of suffering set out in ordered rows , illustrates the silent and isolated atmosphere the photographer is in the photographic studio. With eyes rhyming with cries , it heightens our sympathy towards the victims in war as it appeals to both the readers sense of hearing and seeing. • 42. The Basement Room, By Graham Greene Maya Angelou once said, We are only as blind as we want to be. This is not referring to literal blindness, but instead to the human tendency of to ignore, or be blind to, the consequences of their actions in relation to the good of other people. Renowned author Graham Greene explores this theme from what some people believe to be a Christian perspective in his many of his works. Although two of Graham Greene s short stories, The Basement Room and The Destructors, are neither clearly redemptive or biblical, it is very possible that the stories are written from a Christian worldview because of their parallels to the nature and consequences of sin, and Greene s criticism of selfish human behavior. The Basement Room has several ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Old Misery, a lonely old man who lives in a singular house in the middle of bomb ruins, and his beloved home represent an innocent victim deceived by an evil force. After convincing Old Misery to let him see the inside of his house, T. devises a plan to destroy it. He explains his plan to his friends, saying, We ll destroy it... We d do it from inside. I ve found a way in... When we came out again there d be nothing there... ( Destructors 4). T. and his plan clearly parallel the effects of Satan on humans. Old Misery, like any other unsuspecting victim would, unknowingly lets a source of evil into his home. Once inside, T. learns the weaknesses of the place and figures out exactly how to ruin it, similarly to how all humans can be killed by their weaknesses. Old Misery never did anything against the boy. Instead, he acted kindly towards T. when he welcomes him inside. Like Satan, T. is aggressive and angry in nature, and feels prompted to completely sabotage Old Misery s life for his own personal enjoyment. Similarly to T. s type in The Destructors, Greene explores the selfishness of humans in the character of Mrs. Baines in The Basement Room. Mrs. Baines, Philip s housekeeper, corrupts Philip by forcing him to keep her secrets and bribing him to help her conspire against her husband. After Philip lets it slip that Baines had been ... This essay will be looking at the aims and extent the chartists went to in order to bring about reform within a politically corrupt parliament, whilst ensuring that all classes of society were in possession of their equal, political and social rights. • 45. Examples Of Classism In The Outsiders Classism was a big part of the 60s and with Ponyboy and the gang, it comes into play in more than one way. The Outsiders, based in the 1960s Oklahoma, is about two gangs, the Greasers and the Socials. The Greasers were lower class, lower income people who were relatively rough around the edges while the Socials were the West side rich kids who went around getting drunk and jumping Greasers. The book is about the conflicts that these two groups have, either with each other or inside of their own group. In S.E. Hinton s novel, The Outsiders, many of the conflicts and hardships in the community are caused by the Socials (Socs). The killing of Bob had many different sides but from the side of the Greasers, it was what they had to do. One example of this was that Johnny was justified in killing Bob. In the text it states, They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you (pg. 50 pdf). This shows that Johnny killed the Bob in self defense and that if they hadn t been drowning Pony, he probably wouldn t have done it. The text explains, Johnny getting ... The text also states, I held him like Soda had held him the day we found him lying in the lot (pg. 64 pdf). If you look in the book, you will see that none of what happened would have happened if it hadn t been for the Socs trying to beat up Johnny and Ponyboy. • 50. Reflection About God God, as we all know, can be the most loving being since he is love. All throughout the old testament we see different places where God has shown his love and compassion towards people. One example of this is when God makes Adam and Eve. God gives them dominion over the earth and everything on it. God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them, saying: Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth. 29 God also said: See, I give you every seed bearing plant all over the earth and every tree that has seed bearing fruit on it to be your food; 30 and to all the animals of the land, all the birds of the air, and all the living creatures that crawl on the ground, I give all the green plants for food. And so it happened. 31 God looked at everything he had made, and he found it very good. Evening came, and morning followed the sixth day. As you can see God is willing enough to give an entire planet to two humans who he has created. That is a lot of love and trust to give someone. God is also willing to give Adam and Eve everything to their hands. He loves them so much that he does not want them to suffer and work for everything they will need. This is one example is God s love towards people. Another example of God s love is when God allows Abraham and Sarah, who can not have children ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
