Analysis Of The Movie The Shawshank Redemption
To be honest, I have seen The Shawshank Redemption but it has been a while so figured that I ll watch
again this 1994 classic. The movie time line takes place between 1947 1967 in Maine that follow the
life of former vice president banker Andy Dufrasne. Innocent in the double murder of his wife and her
lover, he is sentenced to life imprisonment to Shawshank State Penitentiary. Although quiet at first and
abused by some prisoners, he opened up to fellow prisoners Red the contraband smuggler. After doing
paper work for Capt. Hadley in tax inheritance one day, Andy was given better treatment such as
organizing the library to even helping prison staff and the warden s taxes and other financial works. In
return, Hadley permanently injured one Andy s abusers and Warden Norton allowing Andy to write
weekly letters for financial assistance for the prison library. By 1965, Tommy befriends Red and Andy.
He asks Andy in gaining his GED but felt he let Andy down after not feeling confident he ll pass the
test. After Tommy revealing one of his former cell mate in another prison as the actual murderer of
Andy s wife and her lover, He asks for the warden s help. Instead, Warden Norton had Andy in two
month solitary confinement and Tommy killed in fear that the prison financial corruption will come to
light. After Andy was release from solitary confinement, his decision to escape from prison finally
came. It turns out he used his rock hammer to tunnel his way out of his cell

The First Years of the Peace Corps Essay
To those people in the huts and villages across the globe struggling to break the bonds of mass misery,
we pledge our best efforts to help them help themselves, for whatever period is required, (Kennedy 2),
John F. Kennedy told an inspired crowd and an ambitious nation during his inaugural address on
January 20, 1961. The origins for his plan to establish a program to assist developing countries
originated about 4 months earlier during an early morning speech at the University of Michigan,
where, at 2 a.m., he challenged the students to contribute part of [there] life to this country (Kennedy
1). His speech received a thunderous response and within weeks a petition in support of the idea had
been gathered with over a thousand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many African countries also received assistance, including Nigeria. The president, Nnamdi Azikiwe,
wanted to establish a four year American style university, but was having trouble recruiting teaching
staff. The Peace Corps made up a third of the staff at the university. In 1971, the Peace Corps left
Nigeria. Nevertheless, the Peace Corps legacy was not forgotten, and in 1991, an interview with Bukar
Zarma, the editor and publisher of Nigeria s capital city newspaper, stated, I was extremely motivated
in science by my former Peace Corps science teacher who had such a passion for space ( Nigerians
Speak Warmly... 1). Other Nigerians stated that the enthusiasm and dedication of the volunteers had
fostered their own successes ( Nigerians Speak Warmly... 1). Clearly, the efforts of the volunteers in
Nigeria helped make a positive difference in the people s lives. Countless numbers of other countries
benefited from these programs. In Morocco, volunteers were given various activities such as irrigation
projects to teaching physical education. In addition, the Peace Corps built libraries, taught English,
and founded Kindergartens in Iran from 1962 to 1976. The programs of the Peace Corps not only
helped third world countries develop, but also provided disaster relief. In 1968, an earthquake
destroyed a mosque in a Khorasan village and volunteers helped to design and build a new one. On
December 26, 2004, an earthquake off the coast of Indonesia created a massive tsunami

The Streets Are Safer For Women Than They Are For Men
In reality, the streets are much safer for women than they are for men. Critique this statement using the
victimisation/fear paradox AND with reference to current statistics.
The perceived and potential threat for street violence is a significant social issue and has led to public
fear; it has been imbedded so deep within our minds that it is almost instinctual to be constantly on the
lookout for danger when out of the home. Beginning in early childhood through learning about
stranger danger , (Foster 2015), children, particularly females, are being taught to avoid certain
situations because of this fear. According to Jackson (2009), there is a sense of control, comfortability
and familiarity within the home, and it is the unknown and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

(Australian Institute of Criminology 2014b). This disproportionate relationship is called the
victimisation fear paradox; where there is a sizeable difference between an individual s level of fear
experienced compared to the statistical likelihood of actually falling victim to crime. (Ross 2012).
When considering women s most feared types of victimisation when alone on the streets sexual assault
and murder, (State Government of Victoria 2015), it is statistically more likely that these things will
happen in an individual s place of residence; 55% of Australian murders and 60% of reported sexual
assaults in 2011 occurred in the victim s home, with only 16% and 7% occurring on the streets,
respectively. (Australian Institute of Criminology 2014a). In addition, assault on the street in 2011 was
nearly three times higher in male victims than females, with only 8% of all assaults against women
happening on the street, compared with 22% of for men. Of course there are risks involved with being
alone in certain places at certain times, and it is a matter of basic common sense regarding safety,
however the concept of stranger danger is not statistically what needs to be feared: it is the people we
know that are more likely to be a risk. (Australian Institute of Criminology

The Ocean s Timeline
Before there were good ships, many of the people who were on voyages died on the ocean. Our high
tech ships of today aren t able to withstand its crushing power. It is one of most powerful natural
features on earth. The ocean has many interesting characteristics. Below the water is like another
world. We call these features the ocean profile. The ocean s coastline also has many interesting
qualities. The ocean profile is like the underwater geography of the ocean. The eight main features are
the shoreline, continental shelf, continental slope, trench, Guyot, abyssal plain, ridges, and the rift.
The edge of the ocean where it meets the land is called the shoreline. The part of the continental land
that is underwater is called the continental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sea cliffs, beaches, river valleys, bays, sandbars, sea stacks, and sea arches are examples of coastline
features. Sea cliffs are high walls of rock. They are formed when erosion from the waves takes place
on a raised piece of land forming a sharp drop off in the land. Beaches are the portion of land that is
the area between low and high tide. Many beaches are made of millions of tiny quartz particles called
sand. River valleys is a stream that erodes itself into the land forming a valley. River valleys are an
important source of sediments going to the sea. A bay is a broad inlet of the sea where a sandbar partly
encloses it from the sea. A sandbar is a thin piece of land which curves toward the land usually
enclosing a bay. Sometimes sandbars are made of sediments carried by the waves. Sea stacks are tall
narrow rocks along the seacoast. Sometimes sea cliffs can be eroded by waves into a large arch made
of rock. Like the ocean itself, the coastline is full of beautiful qualities. The ocean profile is full of
features like underwater mountains, cliffs, valleys, volcanoes, and plains. The coastline, which is a
feature of the ocean profile, is full of beauty and variety. Erosion helps in the formation of both ocean
profile and the coastline. Without erosion they would not

The Incredible Power of One Day in the Life of Ivan...
The Incredible Power of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
It has been Russian writers in particular, who for two centuries have struggled against censorship and
oppression to accomplish two great tasks: to create innovative and meaningful art, and to use that art
to make a statement about a specifically Russian predicament. So often the theme was political, and so
many generations of Russians criticised Mother Russia for her backward ways. Vissarion Belinsky s
caustic admonitions in his Letter to Gogol were long a rallying cry for writers: This is why, especially
among us, universal attention is paid...to every manifestation of any so called liberal trend, no matter

Much of GULAG was based on hundreds of letters and memoirs that former prisoners mailed to
Solzhenitsyn after One Day was published. (Remnick, 119)
When reading One Day it is overwhelming to comprehend and imagine this single dawn to dusk
description, with the hindsight to understand that millions of multitudes of men and women suffered
through such an evil scheme of servitude of cruelty.
One Day was the first book of its kind to be printed in Russia. Miraculously, it was not only printed,
but subsequently soldto the citizenry, who were actually allowed to read it. This unheard of event
occurred during a very delicate period of time known as the Khrushchev thaw , when open
condemnation of the cult of personality began to become commonplace, even expected. These brief
years of relief enjoyed a momentary artistic flowering, and poets like Yevgeny Yevtushenko and
Anderi Voznezensky, among others, began to emerge. During Khrushchev s cultural thaw, plays or
novels such as Solzhenitsyn s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denizovich were the primary signs of new
freedom. (Smith, 110) The response to this little book was immense, and an interesting documentation
of varied responses to it is included in Leopold Lebedze s work, Solzhenitsyn: A Documentary

Grease Character Analysis
In the movie Grease, John Travolta portrays the character, Danny. Danny especially struggles
throughout the movie trying to figure out exactly who he is. It remains very common for teenagers to
struggle with identity while going through different stages of their lives. Identity is a self definition or
sense of who one is, where one is going, and how one fits into society. As much as Danny does not
want to see it when he is around certain individuals he acts much different than what he does around
other individuals. Furthermore, I will cover four topics on how Danny struggles with identity
throughout the movie Grease with the following topics: how Danny views himself, how Danny s
friends view him, how Sandy views him, and lastly how Danny changes throughout the movie. John
Travolta s character, Danny Zuko, sees himself as the leader of his group. When he is around his
friends he sees himself as such a badass. For example, in the beginning of the movie when Danny first
sees that Sandy is going to be going to his school, it is easy to notice that Danny is struggling to
decide how he wants to react to her being there because his friends are around. When Danny is around
Sandy, he is a completely different person than he is around his friends. For instance, in the intro of
the movie it shows how the two spent their summer together at the beach every day. Danny treated
Sandy like such a lady. These two cases show how Danny perceives himself differently around certain

What Is The Setting Of The Bluest Eye
In the novel, The Bluest Eye, we learn about the lives of black, middle school aged girls. The novel
takes place in 1941, during a time where racial and prejudice situations are prevalent in the lives of
African Americans. The children experience a childhood full of racialism, great pain, and
subordination,
The children who we come to learn so much about are two sisters, Claudia and Frieda, Pecola, who is
their foster sister now. Claudia gives a brief look into the setting of the story in describing her home as
well. Our house is old, cold, and green . She explains where she lives and how cold the house is and
how it looks. She introduces us to, Mr. Henry a friend of the family that comes to visit them
occasionally. The children sit and hear grown folks talking in the kitchen. They hear how the grown
folks talk about each other bad, there is not much good to usually say. Well, somebody asked him why
he left a nice good churchwoman like Della for that heifer (13). This shows how African Americans
are negative about each other and rarely have any nice encouraging words to say about one another.
Pecola is now in the home due a fire at home by Cholly Breedlove, her father. She has been on a long
journey of great pain and confused about what kind of identity she wants to have. She is now in the
home with Claudia and Frieda since the event has taken place. She has a cup with Shirley Temple
embedded on the front, a very popular white girl that little girls of all races idolize.

Mandala Research Paper
Mandala Essay There are many ways to convey who I am and what is important to me, one such way
are symbols in a mandala. What I chose for my mandala were symbols that represented as strength,
independence, friendship, family, and success. These consist of my personality, who is important to
me, and what is important to myself in the future. One of the symbols that represents me can be
symbolized as the Lotus Flower. I put it in the center of the mandala, because it is the symbol that
mainly represents me. For me it symbolizes strength. I did not choose this based on physical strength,
but more on emotional strength. I need this strength for when something bad happens, I can pull
through the hardship. It is also based on what I can handle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without the strength that I have to have, I would give in and not have very good grades. This would
probably occur because stress can get the best of me occuasualy. Another symbol that I choose was the
X. In certain situations it means freedom and independence. I choose this symbol because I am a very
independent person. If I have a problem, then I like to solve it on my own. In spite of the last symbol,
I chose the symbol of friendship. This kind of contradicts my last symbol, but I can be social and
independant. Another symbol I chose was the two arrows crossing over each other. This symbolizes
friendship. My friends are an immense part of me. What this represents in my life is how my friends
support and help me. They can be my emotional support, and are always there when I need them.
Even I cannot me independently strong forever. My close relations help me rejuvenate my strength by
cheering me up and helping me. The next symbol is a triangular symbol. It is a Celtic symbol for
family. My family is my biggest support system. They are the reason why I am here today. They are
also a main part of my life so I represent that through symbols. My next and final symbol in my
mandala to represent me is the upside down

Techniques Used by Clarinet Players
Technique is very important for all musicians of all types, especially for Clarinet players. Many of the
techniques are vital for a great musician to understand. Things such as embouchure, vibrato and tone
effects are all things that are required by the musician. I will be investigating the embouchure and how
a correct one will substantially increase your prowess as a woodwind, particularly clarinet, player. The
clarinet is a woodwind instrument that has a single reed mouthpiece. Johann Christoph Denner
invented the clarinet in Germany around the turn of the 18th century by adding a register key to the
earlier Chalumea. Having a correct embouchure is vitally important to playing woodwind instruments.
Structure
1. Embouchure.
2. Different types of embouchures in different people.
3. Research into different kinds of embouchure and how other people do it.
4. Synthesis of why it is very important to have an good embouchure.
With the woodwinds, the sound is generated by a reed and not with the lips. The embouchure is
therefore based on sealing the area around the reed and the mouthpiece. This makes sure that there is
no air escaping from either side of the mouthpiece when the musician is blowing. A reed instrument
works by having the musician blowing a steady breath of air over the reed and through the
mouthpiece. The vibrations of the reed are what produce the sound that makes up the notes. The
harder or stronger the air is passing over the reed the higher the pitch of the

Boy Scouts Expectations
When I was in the sixth grade I decided to join the boy scouts, my reasoning was simple. I thought it
would be beneficial when I would apply to High Schools and it would look paramount on my resume.
I also thought that it would be a great opportunity to learn and develop more qualities within myself. I
learned numerous life skills and procedures that will play an important role in specific scenarios that
will occur throughout my life time. Gaining all this excess knowledge will only expand my mindset
and create a better version of me. Currently I am in the eighth grade and my reasoning has changed
dramatically. While some of my peers have made the choice to leave the boy scouts, I have remained
steadfast in my quest to become and eagle scout.

Media Coverage of the Duke Lacrosse Scandal Essay
Media Coverage of the Duke Lacrosse Scandal The 2006 Duke Lacrosse Case brought to light many
of the issues and divisions currently plaguing our media sphere. This terrible act of injustice, which
blamed three innocent Duke lacrosse players, Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty, and David Evans, for
the rape of an African American stripper, garnered extensive media attention that gripped America for
almost an entire year (Wasserman, 3). Today, many scrutinze the media s methods of covering the
case, and deem that certain codes of ethics were not adhered to. Rather than remaining neutral,
newspapers and TV outlets allowed themselves to be used by Mike Nifong, the former District

Roberts antagonized one of the players by teasing about his lack of a male part. The player then

Slide 1: Introduction/Pocahontas face
Pocahontas and John Smith may be the most famous and best known part of history of the original
Jamestown settlement of 1607. As a popular Disney film star, stories of Pocahontas life began creating
our own pop culture idea of what really happened during the first attempt at colonizing the new world.
Slide 2:
This is a very important time in the history of our country, and we have little documentation
supporting the theories of events that historians have come up with. We rely on the love story of Smith

question; do we really know what happened between Pocahontas and John Smith?

The Human Body Of The Thyroid Gland
The thyroid gland is very important in proper functioning of the human body. The hormones it
releases are vital in regulating growth and metabolic reaction. The thyroid gland is relatively small
(about 20g) and is located at the base of the neck, connected to the windpipe and voicebox. Its
structure may be described as butterfly shaped as it is composed of two connected lobes. See image:
The two main hormones secreted by the thyroid gland are tetraiodothyronine (thyroxine or T4) and
triiodothyronine (T3). Both hormones have a peptide structure containing iodine (three atoms in T3
and four in T4).These two hormones regulate growth and development as well as metabolism. They
both speed up the rate of the body s metabolic reactions, which ... Show more content on

Likewise, when a greater rate of growth and metabolism is needed, secretion of TRH can be increased.
Thus, homeostasis is maintained in the body. See diagram of this process below. In a healthy
individual, this mechanism means that thyroid activity proceeds at a normal rate, resulting in normal
growth and metabolism. However, in some cases the thyroid gland may not produce enough hormones
or may be overactive and produce excessive amounts. The focus in this case will be on overactive
thyroid glands and on the specific case of Graves disease.
Hyperthyroidism is a term used to describe an overactive thyroid gland. This is usually prevented by
the process mentioned above, however there are some factors that can cause hyperthyroidism. One of
these factors is Graves disease.
In Graves disease, a response in the body s immune system (the system which defends against disease)
causes the antibody thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) to be produced. The precise cause of
this immune response is currently unknown. TSI binds to the cells of the thyroid gland and causes
them to secrete excessive amounts of thyroid hormones. Some of the symptoms caused are:
A feeling of being nervous or restless
Insomnia (poor sleep)
Increased appetite but weight loss
Hand tremors
Diarrhoea
Irregular menstruation in women
Swelling of thyroid gland or goitre

Personal Behavior Change
Everyone has different challenge in his/her life ,and he/she may have different view on the same thing.
Therefore, people will have different goals which they are eager to achieve. Based on what my life
looks like and what I need in my life, my behavior change is to exercise at least one hour every day.
The reasons why I choose this goal are because I want to spend some time relaxing from my daily life,
and get the balance between education and occupation. Moreover, I expect to burn the fat in my body
because I spend very little time for workout since I got a job. When I planned to accomplish this
behavior change, I knew that challenges or difficulties would appear, I could not avoid them and I
could not finish it easily. But I am the kind of person who likes challenge and I am not afraid of it.
Therefore, I chose this behavior change. During the process of this behavior change, I met a lot of
difficulties and I learn how to get balance well in my life. The first and the biggest difficulty is time
because the time availability is limit for me. Because I have two summer classes and I need to work

Moll Flanders As A Realist Characters
When looking at John Gass article, Moll Flanders and the Bastard Birth of Realist Character, he
approaches the conflicting question about how the audience is meant to feel about the main
protagonist, Moll, and whether we are meant to respect her or not. While heavily focusing on the
aspects of genre theory and irony, Gass argues that it is the multiple genre expectations that give Moll
the reputation of being deep and complex, which leads to her controversial character. He uses
historical context to show how Moll can be seen as a villain, but continues to argue that it is primarily
the expectations brought on by genre theory that make people see her as a villain, based on those
certain expectations. Gass interpretation using genre theory analysis, irony, and historical context to
deeply analyze the novel strengthen his argument that our feelings towards Moll aren t the main
argument, but instead, that Moll is a true realist character. Gass discusses Moll Flanders and the text s
complexity involving the main protagonist, Moll, questioning whether the audience is supposed to feel
she is evil and villainous, or just someone has the ability to grow from her past as a criminal. He
begins his argument by stating, in both life and literature, we tend to think of persons as existing in
excess of stereotype: as real selves that subsist apart from their special roles and the attempts of others
to define them (111). Being a woman in the 1700 s, Moll is expected to be married to

entirely different ambience, the lobby contains a tank that holds the lobster that will be served to you,
and the children that are visiting the restaurant are all excited over watching the lobster fight causing a
ruckus of noise, which is understandable because it goes with the noise level at the restaurant. Very
few decorations are on the walls and there are minimal decorative items throughout the restaurant. The

hero as someone who has a thousand faces. That a hero has a certain sequence of actions in order to be
considered a hero. A hero is someone who has found, achieved or done something beyond the normal
range of achievement and/or experiment. Someone who has given it s life to something bigger than
itself or other than themselves. Campbell also stated that there are deeds for a everyday hero, which is
a hero who has performed a war act or physical act of heroism. Someone who is giving themselves or
sacrificing themselves to another. Therefore, my everyday

One Writer s Beginnings Eudora Welty Analysis
In One Writer s Beginnings, Eudora Welty shares memories about reading as a child and how it caused
her to become a writer fiction. To express the intensity and value of said memories, Welty uses
different forms of figurative language. Welty uses diction and pathos to express the worth and potency
of her memories relating to reading.
In order to show the value and strength of past memories about reading, Eudora Welty uses nostalgia.
Welty recollects about a scary librarian, Mrs. Calloway, and how she used to have rules about books.
Welty states, You could not take back a book to the library on the same day... you could only take out
two books. According to Welty these rules did not stop her from reading; as a matter of fact, she said

Homeless Youth Case Study
Many of the health issues faced by homeless youth are similar to those faced by anyone experiencing
homelessness. However, as adolescents, homeless youth are still developing psychologically,
cognitively and physically and may make choices that are not in the best interest of their health.
Before becoming homeless, these youth may have endured a chaotic and often violent home life and
they may be distrustful of authority and adults. For these reasons, homeless youth can benefit from
services that are specific to their needs rather than incorporated into services for the adult homeless
population.

In addition, homeless, unaccompanied youth face several barriers to obtaining an education. They are
often prevented from enrolling in school because of liability concerns, legal guardianship
requirements and curfew laws. In 1987, the Stewart B. McKinney Act established the Education of
Homeless Children and Youth Program. Unfortunately, the program has not yet received the full
funding authorized in 1987. Only 3 percent of local education agencies receive funding. The link
between a lack of education, unemployment and poverty is obvious. In addition to needing to
complete high school successfully, homeless youth need job training skills to be successful in the job

Paper On Healthy People 2020
According to Healthy People 2020, The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans (PAG) released in
2008, was the first ever publication of national guidelines for physical activity. The physical activity
topics and objectives for Healthy People 2020 reflect the strong state of the science supporting the
health benefits of regular physical activity among youth and adults, as identified in the PAG , (United
States Department of Health and Human Services [HHS], Healthy People 2020, 2016).
Expending on the PAG, Healthy People 2020 estimated, on a national level, over 80 percent of adults
and youth are not actively participating in daily physical activity, potentially increasing the risk of
developing chronic health related diseases such as; heart disease, diabetes, obesity, or exacerbating
current health issues (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2016).
Healthy People implemented an extensive list of physical activity objectives targeting youth of all
ages. The objectives are all aimed at promoting the health benefits of maintaining a physically active
life style. The following objective targets a major area of concern for the medical community and the
increase of inactivity among today s youth; PA 8.2.2; Increase the proportion of children and

A Brief Note On The Assembly Operator
Chapter 15
15.4) Starving is defined as the situation where the assembly operator has finished the assigned work
on the give work unit time load but they didn t receive the next unit at the station. Workers are forced
to the situation of starving. Blocking is defined as the work completed at the assigned time limit but
cannot be passed to the downstream station because of the reason that the worker is not ready to
receive the unit. In that case, worker is blocked from working.
15.7) In production line terminology, line efficiency means when the time of downtime of the line is
averaged in, the proportion time limit on the production line. It is basically the ration of theoretical
cycle time to actual production time.
15.9) Service time Ts is defined as the actual amount of period available for work at the station to
complete the assigned task and the cycle time Tc is defined as the periodic time interval between the
arrival of work load at the station. The difference between the both is the repositioning time, Tr.
Mathematically it can be defined as the Ts= Tc Tr.
15.11) Precedence constraint is the restriction on the purchase where the work elements are
performed. There are few elements that must be completed before others. For instance, a threaded hole
must be drilled before it is tapped.
15.12) Balance efficiency is defined as the work content time limit is portioned into the total possible
service time limit on the specific line.

Examples Of Critical Discourse Analysis
CHAPTER 2
THEORITICAL FOUNDATION
2.1 Critical Discourse Analysis
To understand the concept of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), it is necessary to see how CDA
defines discourse. Discourse is not simply an isolated textual or dialogical structure (van Dijk, 1988).
It is seen as socially constructed ways that do not only shape but also enable (social) reality (Foucault,
1977; Paltridge, 2006). It involves a dialectical relationship between a particular discursive event and
the situation(s), institution(s), and social structure(s) which frame it (Fairclough Wodak, 1997, p. 258).
It also helps to establish power relations between social classes, gender, or majorities and minorities
groups (Wodak Meyer, 2009). Therefore, CDA acts as an approach that critically investigates the
relationship between discourse and the reproduction of power in social practices and interactions
(Fairclough, 1995 as cited ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, one of the distinguishing features of DHA is its interdisciplinary method that considers a
variety of different empirical data and background information (Reisigl Wodak, 2001).
The historical dimension is realized by collecting all information regarding the historical background
and the original sources of the object under investigation and exploring diachronic change
(Matouschek et al. 1995; Wodak et al., 1990, 1994 as cited in van Leeuwen Wodak, 1999).
Specifically, the process of analysis in DHA starts by describing the phenomena occurred in texts.
Then, describing the apparent changes. Finally, discussing the result to find how and why change
occurs since the purpose of DHA is to uncover the ideology in diachronic texts (Slavícková,

I chose to read the book, The Goal by Eliyahu M. Goldratt. The book is about a plant manager, Alex

the Theory of Constraints. I can see the benefits of this book in different areas, not only in the ability
to increase productivity in any company, but also using the ideas in all other areas of your life. I
personally had a difficult time understanding this book. It took me reading it, then going back and re
reading part of it, to really understand how to apply the concepts. However, I do finally get it. The two
key things that I enjoyed about the book are dependent events in relation to statistical fluctuations and
bottlenecks vs non bottlenecks. When reading the chapter about dependent events in relation to
statistical fluctuations , Goldratt use the example of a Boy Scouts hiking trip, where the slowest boy
was in the back, and one of the faster boys were in the front. One would think that this was a great
idea and would help them get to their destination fast, but in reality it did the exact opposite. It made
the process much slower, because the boy in the front set the pace for the rest of the group, but
because the rest of the group had slower paces, they were unable to keep up with the demand, if you
will, which resulted in a gap in the line. These gaps in the line caused the last person in the line, which
happened to be Alex, to have to wait on the rest of

The Influence Of Reality TV On American Culture

entertainment by its presentations of reality shows.VH1 has contributed in the decline of music
perceptions by switching from music to a strictly reality TV basis. Reality TV is the lowest form of

thing. In these shows, VH1 has a vast array of minority stereotypes and their involvement in the

Writing Techniques of Emily Dickinson Essay
Emily Dickinson is one of the most interesting female poets of the nineteenth century. Every author
has unique characteristics about him/her that make one poet different from another, but what cause
Emily Dickinson to be so unique are not only the words she writes, but how she writes them. Her style
of writing is in a category of its own. To understand how and why she writes the way she does, her
background has to be brought into perspective. Every poet has inspiration, negative or positive, that
contributes not only to the content of the writing itself, but the actual form of writing the author uses
to express his/her personal talents. Emily Dickinson is no different. Her childhood and adult
experiences and culture form ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The controversy surrounding Emily Dickinson is her odd lifestyle and her tendencies to be somewhat
of a recluse. She is sometimes considered abnormal because she does things differently from most
others. She spends much of her life dressed in white and withdrawn from much of society. Of course,
her peers take this negatively, but what they do not understand is that her being so private is more of a
meditation to her, instead of a hiding. She just wants to escape the pressures she feels are normally
required of women. She does not want to be a servant to sick and elderly. She feels she has more
potential for her mind to grow, and those obligations would just be hindrances to her writing
(McQuade 1255). Her childhood and her staying out of society as an adult, along with many other
aspects known and not known, influence her poems and the style in which she goes about writing the
works. Her techniques of writing are completely different from any other writer, whether prose or
poetry. Dickinson composes her phrases by marking them off with a dash, placing a space before and
after. This small maneuver places more emphasis on her impress of the mind in its analysis of
experience (McQuade 1256). Her slant thymes and unique form of expression produces more of an
oddness to the audience.
One of Emily Dickinson s unique forms of writing is her excessive use

Kim V. Searle
Much like the course any sporting event is bounded by the rules of the game, the course of any
philosophical discussion is bounded by the ideas accepted as axioms. A game of soccer in which the
players were permitted to hold the ball in their hands would be radically different, even incomparable
to a traditional game, even if all other factors (weather, location, player s skill) were physically
identical. In much the same way, although both begin with the same set of facts (materially closed
universe, constant physical laws) Jaegwon Kim s view on mental causation is radically different from
Searle s, because they approach the issue from different philosophical perspectives. Neither is wrong,
if you reason using their principles. Neither is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their dissension stems not from one being fundamentally right or wrong, but from different
assumptions. Kim accuses Searle of Causal Over Determination. He sees Searle as claiming that not
only does m(F) cause m(G), but also that F causes G in an equally real way. Since m(G) is the true
cause of G, the F to G causation must be illusory. Searle could likewise accuse Kim of Causal Over
Distinction, arguing that m(F) is indistinguishable from F, and in that both together as one cause
[m(G)+G].
In addition, Searle would say that Kim is making a fundamental mistake in thinking of mental states
as being caused by physical states (related temporally), rather than existing simultaneously. This limits
Kim s thinking, as two events related causally in this way cannot by definition be the same event.
Searle suggests that we include a sort of permanent causation, by which molecular structures doesn t
cause hardness, but rather is hardness.
There is, as Searle rightly points out however, a ragged hole in Kim s conclusion. Kim asserts, as if to
appease us, that mental states are both epiphenomenal and causal. By describing mental states as
superveniently causal, i.e. appearing to be causal based on the true causality of their microproperties,
he has satisfied Hume s requirements for causation, i.e. that causation itself is

The Airplane Effect Orville Wright once said, The airplane stays up because it doesn t have the time to

forever. The invention of the aircraft positively affected American society by providing a quicker way
of traveling, having an influence on warfare, and implementing a better economy in the United States.
When the aeroplane was assembled, the possibility for travel and exploration became boundless.
Before airplanes, the eighteenth and nineteenth century produced the steamboat, the railroad system,

This was a result of airplanes evolving throughout the First World War. The success of America and
the Allied Powers in World War II was affected extensively by those fighter jets. They were armed
with machine guns and had better engines. Even with the success of the fighter jets, ultimately,
bombers had the biggest impact on America s success in the war. Bombs cleared out squadrons of
enemy soldiers in places the Allies could not travel to on foot. American bombers ended the war by
dropping nuclear bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima (Dugdale Pointon). Adolf Hitler s foreign
minister, Joachim von Ribbentrop, wrote that one of the reasons the Allied Powers came out victorious
was because of the success of their air power. Hitler agreed with this (Overy). The flying machine
forever affected the world during the World Wars. One of the most notable impacts airplanes has
affected not just America, but the world as a whole. Aviation keeps the whole world connected and in

Success Is Counted Sweetest
Only those who have experienced failure can truly appreciate success, is the central theme that Emily
Dickinson follows in her poem entitled Success is counted sweetest. This theme is manifested not only
through her encouraging tone, but also through several literary devices, such as imagery, metaphors
and allusions. Dickinson begins the poem by restating the title, which is followed by an example
where nectar symbolizes success. Next, she writes about a solider that hears the winning team
celebrating. However, he hears the victorious group as he is lying on the ground dying. From this,
some may say that the poem is about how people who have been defeated, appreciate success more
than those who simply win. Although, this is not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So clear of victory. From the start Dickinson is talking about the soldiers who have died. Then she
addresses how the soldiers that lived can not begin to fathom the value of success since they were able
to go home. They did not lose their lives as other soldiers did, and the ones who did could only wish to
exchange places with the ones who survived. In addition to Dickinson using tone to emphasize her
point, she also incorporated various literary devices, similar to imagery, metaphors and allusions.
Imagery can be found in the last two lines when she wrote, The distant strains of triumph, Burst
agonized and clear! This gave a direct visual of a man listening to the sound of victory in the near
distance, as he laid motionless on the floor. This invokes a feeling of sorrow within the readers, since
they can envision what Dickinson is talking about. A metaphor is demonstrated in the lines two and
three when she says, To comprehend a nectar, Requires sorest need. In this instance, nectar symbolizes
success. Thus, in order for anyone to reap victory, they must overcome an obstacle. Yet, to fully
interpret this, one has to analyze the meaning of the metaphor, which makes the readers think deeper
and enables the to get a better understanding of message that is being portrayed. In the same way, the
allusions were applied

  • 2. Analysis Of The Movie The Shawshank Redemption To be honest, I have seen The Shawshank Redemption but it has been a while so figured that I ll watch again this 1994 classic. The movie time line takes place between 1947 1967 in Maine that follow the life of former vice president banker Andy Dufrasne. Innocent in the double murder of his wife and her lover, he is sentenced to life imprisonment to Shawshank State Penitentiary. Although quiet at first and abused by some prisoners, he opened up to fellow prisoners Red the contraband smuggler. After doing paper work for Capt. Hadley in tax inheritance one day, Andy was given better treatment such as organizing the library to even helping prison staff and the warden s taxes and other financial works. In return, Hadley permanently injured one Andy s abusers and Warden Norton allowing Andy to write weekly letters for financial assistance for the prison library. By 1965, Tommy befriends Red and Andy. He asks Andy in gaining his GED but felt he let Andy down after not feeling confident he ll pass the test. After Tommy revealing one of his former cell mate in another prison as the actual murderer of Andy s wife and her lover, He asks for the warden s help. Instead, Warden Norton had Andy in two month solitary confinement and Tommy killed in fear that the prison financial corruption will come to light. After Andy was release from solitary confinement, his decision to escape from prison finally came. It turns out he used his rock hammer to tunnel his way out of his cell ... • 3. The First Years of the Peace Corps Essay To those people in the huts and villages across the globe struggling to break the bonds of mass misery, we pledge our best efforts to help them help themselves, for whatever period is required, (Kennedy 2), John F. Kennedy told an inspired crowd and an ambitious nation during his inaugural address on January 20, 1961. The origins for his plan to establish a program to assist developing countries originated about 4 months earlier during an early morning speech at the University of Michigan, where, at 2 a.m., he challenged the students to contribute part of [there] life to this country (Kennedy 1). His speech received a thunderous response and within weeks a petition in support of the idea had been gathered with over a thousand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many African countries also received assistance, including Nigeria. The president, Nnamdi Azikiwe, wanted to establish a four year American style university, but was having trouble recruiting teaching staff. The Peace Corps made up a third of the staff at the university. In 1971, the Peace Corps left Nigeria. Nevertheless, the Peace Corps legacy was not forgotten, and in 1991, an interview with Bukar Zarma, the editor and publisher of Nigeria s capital city newspaper, stated, I was extremely motivated in science by my former Peace Corps science teacher who had such a passion for space ( Nigerians Speak Warmly... 1). Other Nigerians stated that the enthusiasm and dedication of the volunteers had fostered their own successes ( Nigerians Speak Warmly... 1). Clearly, the efforts of the volunteers in Nigeria helped make a positive difference in the people s lives. Countless numbers of other countries benefited from these programs. In Morocco, volunteers were given various activities such as irrigation projects to teaching physical education. In addition, the Peace Corps built libraries, taught English, and founded Kindergartens in Iran from 1962 to 1976. The programs of the Peace Corps not only helped third world countries develop, but also provided disaster relief. In 1968, an earthquake destroyed a mosque in a Khorasan village and volunteers helped to design and build a new one. On December 26, 2004, an earthquake off the coast of Indonesia created a massive tsunami ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Streets Are Safer For Women Than They Are For Men In reality, the streets are much safer for women than they are for men. Critique this statement using the victimisation/fear paradox AND with reference to current statistics. The perceived and potential threat for street violence is a significant social issue and has led to public fear; it has been imbedded so deep within our minds that it is almost instinctual to be constantly on the lookout for danger when out of the home. Beginning in early childhood through learning about stranger danger , (Foster 2015), children, particularly females, are being taught to avoid certain situations because of this fear. According to Jackson (2009), there is a sense of control, comfortability and familiarity within the home, and it is the unknown and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Australian Institute of Criminology 2014b). This disproportionate relationship is called the victimisation fear paradox; where there is a sizeable difference between an individual s level of fear experienced compared to the statistical likelihood of actually falling victim to crime. (Ross 2012). When considering women s most feared types of victimisation when alone on the streets sexual assault and murder, (State Government of Victoria 2015), it is statistically more likely that these things will happen in an individual s place of residence; 55% of Australian murders and 60% of reported sexual assaults in 2011 occurred in the victim s home, with only 16% and 7% occurring on the streets, respectively. (Australian Institute of Criminology 2014a). In addition, assault on the street in 2011 was nearly three times higher in male victims than females, with only 8% of all assaults against women happening on the street, compared with 22% of for men. Of course there are risks involved with being alone in certain places at certain times, and it is a matter of basic common sense regarding safety, however the concept of stranger danger is not statistically what needs to be feared: it is the people we know that are more likely to be a risk. • 5. The Ocean s Timeline Before there were good ships, many of the people who were on voyages died on the ocean. Our high tech ships of today aren t able to withstand its crushing power. It is one of most powerful natural features on earth. The ocean has many interesting characteristics. Below the water is like another world. We call these features the ocean profile. The ocean s coastline also has many interesting qualities. The ocean profile is like the underwater geography of the ocean. The eight main features are the shoreline, continental shelf, continental slope, trench, Guyot, abyssal plain, ridges, and the rift. Sea cliffs, beaches, river valleys, bays, sandbars, sea stacks, and sea arches are examples of coastline features. Sea cliffs are high walls of rock. They are formed when erosion from the waves takes place on a raised piece of land forming a sharp drop off in the land. Beaches are the portion of land that is the area between low and high tide. Many beaches are made of millions of tiny quartz particles called sand. River valleys is a stream that erodes itself into the land forming a valley. River valleys are an important source of sediments going to the sea. A bay is a broad inlet of the sea where a sandbar partly encloses it from the sea. A sandbar is a thin piece of land which curves toward the land usually enclosing a bay. Sometimes sandbars are made of sediments carried by the waves. Sea stacks are tall narrow rocks along the seacoast. Sometimes sea cliffs can be eroded by waves into a large arch made of rock. Like the ocean itself, the coastline is full of beautiful qualities. The ocean profile is full of features like underwater mountains, cliffs, valleys, volcanoes, and plains. The coastline, which is a feature of the ocean profile, is full of beauty and variety. So often the theme was political, and so many generations of Russians criticised Mother Russia for her backward ways. (Remnick, 119) When reading One Day it is overwhelming to comprehend and imagine this single dawn to dusk description, with the hindsight to understand that millions of multitudes of men and women suffered through such an evil scheme of servitude of cruelty. One Day was the first book of its kind to be printed in Russia. Miraculously, it was not only printed, but subsequently soldto the citizenry, who were actually allowed to read it. This unheard of event occurred during a very delicate period of time known as the Khrushchev thaw , when open condemnation of the cult of personality began to become commonplace, even expected. These brief years of relief enjoyed a momentary artistic flowering, and poets like Yevgeny Yevtushenko and Anderi Voznezensky, among others, began to emerge. It remains very common for teenagers to struggle with identity while going through different stages of their lives. Identity is a self definition or sense of who one is, where one is going, and how one fits into society. As much as Danny does not want to see it when he is around certain individuals he acts much different than what he does around other individuals. Furthermore, I will cover four topics on how Danny struggles with identity throughout the movie Grease with the following topics: how Danny views himself, how Danny s friends view him, how Sandy views him, and lastly how Danny changes throughout the movie. John Travolta s character, Danny Zuko, sees himself as the leader of his group. When he is around his friends he sees himself as such a badass. For example, in the beginning of the movie when Danny first sees that Sandy is going to be going to his school, it is easy to notice that Danny is struggling to decide how he wants to react to her being there because his friends are around. When Danny is around Sandy, he is a completely different person than he is around his friends. For instance, in the intro of the movie it shows how the two spent their summer together at the beach every day. Danny treated Sandy like such a lady. These two cases show how Danny perceives himself differently around certain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, in some cases the thyroid gland may not produce enough hormones or may be overactive and produce excessive amounts. • 19. Moll Flanders As A Realist Characters When looking at John Gass article, Moll Flanders and the Bastard Birth of Realist Character, he approaches the conflicting question about how the audience is meant to feel about the main protagonist, Moll, and whether we are meant to respect her or not. While heavily focusing on the aspects of genre theory and irony, Gass argues that it is the multiple genre expectations that give Moll the reputation of being deep and complex, which leads to her controversial character. He uses historical context to show how Moll can be seen as a villain, but continues to argue that it is primarily the expectations brought on by genre theory that make people see her as a villain, based on those certain expectations. Gass interpretation using genre theory analysis, irony, and historical context to deeply analyze the novel strengthen his argument that our feelings towards Moll aren t the main argument, but instead, that Moll is a true realist character. Gass discusses Moll Flanders and the text s complexity involving the main protagonist, Moll, questioning whether the audience is supposed to feel she is evil and villainous, or just someone has the ability to grow from her past as a criminal. He begins his argument by stating, in both life and literature, we tend to think of persons as existing in excess of stereotype: as real selves that subsist apart from their special roles and the attempts of others to define them (111). • 30. Examples Of Critical Discourse Analysis CHAPTER 2 THEORITICAL FOUNDATION 2.1 Critical Discourse Analysis To understand the concept of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), it is necessary to see how CDA defines discourse. Discourse is not simply an isolated textual or dialogical structure (van Dijk, 1988). It is seen as socially constructed ways that do not only shape but also enable (social) reality (Foucault, 1977; Paltridge, 2006). It involves a dialectical relationship between a particular discursive event and the situation(s), institution(s), and social structure(s) which frame it (Fairclough Wodak, 1997, p. 258). It also helps to establish power relations between social classes, gender, or majorities and minorities groups (Wodak Meyer, 2009). Therefore, CDA acts as an approach that critically investigates the relationship between discourse and the reproduction of power in social practices and interactions (Fairclough, 1995 as cited ... Therefore, one of the distinguishing features of DHA is its interdisciplinary method that considers a variety of different empirical data and background information (Reisigl Wodak, 2001). The historical dimension is realized by collecting all information regarding the historical background and the original sources of the object under investigation and exploring diachronic change (Matouschek et al. 1995; Wodak et al., 1990, 1994 as cited in van Leeuwen Wodak, 1999). Specifically, the process of analysis in DHA starts by describing the phenomena occurred in texts. Then, describing the apparent changes. Finally, discussing the result to find how and why change occurs since the purpose of DHA is to uncover the ideology in diachronic texts (Slavícková, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. The Goal By Eliyahu M. A Brief I chose to read the book, The Goal by Eliyahu M. Goldratt. The book is about a plant manager, Alex Rogo, who is trying to save his plant from getting shut down by using the help of physicist, Jonah, and the Theory of Constraints. I can see the benefits of this book in different areas, not only in the ability to increase productivity in any company, but also using the ideas in all other areas of your life. I personally had a difficult time understanding this book. It took me reading it, then going back and re reading part of it, to really understand how to apply the concepts. However, I do finally get it. The two key things that I enjoyed about the book are dependent events in relation to statistical fluctuations and bottlenecks vs non bottlenecks. When reading the chapter about dependent events in relation to statistical fluctuations , Goldratt use the example of a Boy Scouts hiking trip, where the slowest boy was in the back, and one of the faster boys were in the front. One would think that this was a great idea and would help them get to their destination fast, but in reality it did the exact opposite. It made the process much slower, because the boy in the front set the pace for the rest of the group, but because the rest of the group had slower paces, they were unable to keep up with the demand, if you will, which resulted in a gap in the line. These gaps in the line caused the last person in the line, which happened to be Alex, to have to wait on the rest of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A very popular network called VH1, is one of the various networks that have transformed the true meaning of entertainment by its presentations of reality shows.VH1 has contributed in the decline of music perceptions by switching from music to a strictly reality TV basis. • 34. Writing Techniques of Emily Dickinson Essay Emily Dickinson is one of the most interesting female poets of the nineteenth century. Every author has unique characteristics about him/her that make one poet different from another, but what cause Emily Dickinson to be so unique are not only the words she writes, but how she writes them. Her style of writing is in a category of its own. To understand how and why she writes the way she does, her background has to be brought into perspective. Every poet has inspiration, negative or positive, that contributes not only to the content of the writing itself, but the actual form of writing the author uses to express his/her personal talents. Emily Dickinson is no different. Her childhood and adult experiences and culture form ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The controversy surrounding Emily Dickinson is her odd lifestyle and her tendencies to be somewhat of a recluse. She is sometimes considered abnormal because she does things differently from most others. She spends much of her life dressed in white and withdrawn from much of society. Of course, her peers take this negatively, but what they do not understand is that her being so private is more of a meditation to her, instead of a hiding. She just wants to escape the pressures she feels are normally required of women. She does not want to be a servant to sick and elderly. She feels she has more potential for her mind to grow, and those obligations would just be hindrances to her writing (McQuade 1255). Her childhood and her staying out of society as an adult, along with many other aspects known and not known, influence her poems and the style in which she goes about writing the works. Her techniques of writing are completely different from any other writer, whether prose or poetry. Dickinson composes her phrases by marking them off with a dash, placing a space before and after. This small maneuver places more emphasis on her impress of the mind in its analysis of experience (McQuade 1256). Her slant thymes and unique form of expression produces more of an oddness to the audience. One of Emily Dickinson s unique forms of writing is her excessive use ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Kim V. Searle Much like the course any sporting event is bounded by the rules of the game, the course of any philosophical discussion is bounded by the ideas accepted as axioms. A game of soccer in which the players were permitted to hold the ball in their hands would be radically different, even incomparable to a traditional game, even if all other factors (weather, location, player s skill) were physically identical. In much the same way, although both begin with the same set of facts (materially closed universe, constant physical laws) Jaegwon Kim s view on mental causation is radically different from Searle s, because they approach the issue from different philosophical perspectives. Neither is wrong, if you reason using their principles. Neither is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their dissension stems not from one being fundamentally right or wrong, but from different assumptions. Kim accuses Searle of Causal Over Determination. He sees Searle as claiming that not only does m(F) cause m(G), but also that F causes G in an equally real way. Since m(G) is the true cause of G, the F to G causation must be illusory. Searle could likewise accuse Kim of Causal Over Distinction, arguing that m(F) is indistinguishable from F, and in that both together as one cause [m(G)+G]. In addition, Searle would say that Kim is making a fundamental mistake in thinking of mental states as being caused by physical states (related temporally), rather than existing simultaneously. This limits Kim s thinking, as two events related causally in this way cannot by definition be the same event. Searle suggests that we include a sort of permanent causation, by which molecular structures doesn t cause hardness, but rather is hardness. There is, as Searle rightly points out however, a ragged hole in Kim s conclusion. Kim asserts, as if to appease us, that mental states are both epiphenomenal and causal. By describing mental states as superveniently causal, i.e. appearing to be causal based on the true causality of their microproperties, he has satisfied Hume s requirements for causation, i.e. that causation itself is ... Joshua Poirrier Mrs. Elliott English III 9 May 2017 The Airplane Effect Orville Wright once said, The airplane stays up because it doesn t have the time to fall. The invention of the aircraft positively affected American society by providing a quicker way of traveling, having an influence on warfare, and implementing a better economy in the United States. The success of America and the Allied Powers in World War II was affected extensively by those fighter jets. They were armed with machine guns and had better engines. Even with the success of the fighter jets, ultimately, bombers had the biggest impact on America s success in the war. Bombs cleared out squadrons of enemy soldiers in places the Allies could not travel to on foot. American bombers ended the war by dropping nuclear bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima (Dugdale Pointon). Adolf Hitler s foreign minister, Joachim von Ribbentrop, wrote that one of the reasons the Allied Powers came out victorious was because of the success of their air power. Hitler agreed with this (Overy). The flying machine forever affected the world during the World Wars. Success Is Counted Sweetest Only those who have experienced failure can truly appreciate success, is the central theme that Emily Dickinson follows in her poem entitled Success is counted sweetest. This theme is manifested not only through her encouraging tone, but also through several literary devices, such as imagery, metaphors and allusions. Dickinson begins the poem by restating the title, which is followed by an example where nectar symbolizes success. Next, she writes about a solider that hears the winning team celebrating. However, he hears the victorious group as he is lying on the ground dying. So clear of victory. From the start Dickinson is talking about the soldiers who have died. Then she addresses how the soldiers that lived can not begin to fathom the value of success since they were able to go home. They did not lose their lives as other soldiers did, and the ones who did could only wish to exchange places with the ones who survived. In addition to Dickinson using tone to emphasize her point, she also incorporated various literary devices, similar to imagery, metaphors and allusions. Imagery can be found in the last two lines when she wrote, The distant strains of triumph, Burst agonized and clear! This gave a direct visual of a man listening to the sound of victory in the near distance, as he laid motionless on the floor. This invokes a feeling of sorrow within the readers, since they can envision what Dickinson is talking about. A metaphor is demonstrated in the lines two and three when she says, To comprehend a nectar, Requires sorest need. In this instance, nectar symbolizes success. Thus, in order for anyone to reap victory, they must overcome an obstacle. Yet, to fully interpret this, one has to analyze the meaning of the metaphor, which makes the readers think deeper and enables the to get a better understanding of message that is being portrayed.
