Places
For my service learning experience, I had to volunteer at two places, due to some
issues I had at one of the volunteer sites. Both sites served as a great learning
experience to me and I really enjoyed what time I got to spend at each of the sites.
Both sites were there to provide support to those who had some sort of disabilityand
help them lead a more independent life. Each site did amazing work with their
clients and I am exceptionally happy to see places like this in our community.

There is an estimated 1.9 million people living with an amputated limb in America,
each day 500 more Americans loss a limb (Ziegler et al., 2008). Of those who lose
a limb later in life, 60 80% of them experience phantom limb pain. (Nikolajsen et
al., 2001) Phantom limb pain refers to a pain or sensation that seems to come from
the limb that was amputated. ( Nikolajsen et al., 2001) Of those who are congenital
amputees, an estimated 1500 of them are born with upper limb reduction, while
750 of them are born with a lower limb reduction. (Canfield et al, 2006) Limb
reduction refers to a defect during birth that causes a part of a limb or the entire
limb to fail to fully form during pregnancy. ( Vasluian et al, 2013) A look within the
quality of life of these various forms of amputees may produce viable information that
could be used to assist in the prosthetic rehabilitation process.
With such differences within the amputee community, there could be a possibility of

In this article, The Sting Of Intentional Pain by Kurt Gray and Daniel M. Wegner
they offer an inside account of how intentional pain actually causes more pain than
unintentional pain. These authors prove this through an experiment where forty three
people came together, and were met with a study partner called a confederate . These
individuals were then moved to individual rooms where they would be administered
simple psychophysical test but primarily a discomfort assessment.
An electric shock would be used on these people, according to a 7 point scale that
would determine how uncomfortable they felt with 7 being the highest. Shocks, were
delivered to their dominant hand with voltages ranging from 40 to 75 volts. The
participants looked at a computer screen that had only two potential task before
completing a shock. The participants in this experience were being told that the
confederate in the other room was controlling/selecting the task for the participant to
complete. In the intentional condition, the confederate chose the discomfort
assessment task when it was an option, and participants received an electric shock. In
