Anne Carson Essay

Anne Carson s Lessons
Anne Carson is a very intelligent and well rounded writer. When I first read Anne Carson s Short Talks
, I was seriously confused. At first, I thought she was an abstract writer that wrote just to write. But
then I took a second look at her work and realized there was much more to it than just crazy jumbled
ideas. Short Talks is a mixture of many elements. It has argumentation, facts, personal opinions, and
an unconventional way of writing.
As I was rereading the Short Talks , I noticed names, facts, and a lesson to go along with each Short
Talk. This persuaded me to do some research so the stories would start to make more sense. After ...

Elektra took this very hard, so she and her brother Orestes plotted revenge against her mother and step
father. Elektra s father had been against things like this, but Elektra became so bitter she began to
commit many crimes. So this short talk helps us decide between what is major and minor in our life.
This helps to keep from overreacting over the small things in life.
Another lesson comes from the short talk On Reading. This takes the reader back to their childhood.
No, not everyone enjoys reading, but it is also great for you. In this short talk I got the imagery that
this little girl was on a road trip with her parents, her father does not enjoy reading but she does. So
while on the way to their destination, she reads Madame Bovary. While reading she takes a moment to
look around at the sights passing through the window. This just gets the reader to truly think and
assess the way they perceive the way they view reading. Having someone who enjoys reading, and
someone who finds no pleasure in reading is what makes the world go round. Not everyone
appreciates, or finds interest in the same things, but do not discourage anyone if you have no interest
in it.
If I were to write some short talks I could use an Anne Carson like writing style, or writing that flows
eloquently. I would try to help the reader to understand what is being said, but to also think about what
is before them. I would include an introduction in my short talks

Being A Clarinet Essay
To start off my coat of arms I drew a clarinet in the middle. This clarinet represents something that I
want to get better at in the next year. Recently I have started playing clarinet so that I could join
Marching Band and Wind Ensemble. I believe that if I keep practicing every day and make a goal for
a year from now to be at 2nd clarinet level, I can succeed. My motto is work hard a stay strong, so
practicing and believing in myself will help me to be an expert next year. I used the colors red, blue,
and green. Green symbolizes balance and growth which I need to complete my goal. Red symbolizes
passion and ambition which I believe are two important qualities needed when wanting to get better at
something. Blue symbolizes trust and peace. If I stay calm and trust myself I will be able to
accomplish many goals, not just learning clarinet. Next, in the top right corner, I drew me saying
polite phrases that I use every day. This is the one thing I have learned from somebody else. When I
was young, my parents taught me how to be polite and use manners. This skill that I learned from my
parents has helped me so much in my lifetime especially when being a guest or speaking to an adult.
My motto, work hard and stay strong, applies to this because you can do both those things well with
manners, especially if you need help, and can use manners to ask for help. I used the colors orange,
yellow, and blue. Blue symbolizes integrity which I possess with the ability to use manners.

The Aztec Human Sacrifices Essay
The Aztec civilization was a very complex society that was feared and known well for their various
gory sacrifices done to please their many gods in their polytheistic religion. The much feared
civilization began by the exile of one of the two Toltec leaders, which lead to the decline of the Toltec
state that was later replaced by Mexica, or the Aztecs. According to the Aztecs, the land chosen to
build their main city was chosen by the portrayal of an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its
mouth. Through military might, the Aztecs managed to become the most powerful civilization in the
mid fourteenth century. They maintained their power through military might and the fear they caused
other civilizations because of the human ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The selfless act the gods committed led to one of the major reasons for human sacrifices which was
that since the gods gave up their own life for the creation of the new world, that the Aztecs had to
somehow respect and honor their action. They did this by creating an eighteen month calendar, which
dedicated each month to a certain god. The Aztecs used scared and solar calendars to tell time and
when all the possible combinations had been used, usually every fifty two years, the Aztecs would go
through a twelve day period before the cycle started again (Benson 506).
There were many different methods the Aztecs used to sacrifice their victims but most sacrifices
centered on the method of heart extraction. The victims were, thrust onto the stone, where a temple
priest cut through their chest wall with a ritual flint knife, and the heart was, [offered] to the sun for
vitality and nourishment, ( Aztec Human Sacrifices ). There was also the act of burning the victim
alive in the sacrificial fire but before they reached death they were taken out and their heart would be
taken out (Callery 33). Victims were not the only ones that were sacrificed; priests also conducted a
method of sacrifice called bloodletting. The priest would begin by punctuating his tongue or any other
body part and then proceeding to letting blood flow out ( Aztec Human Sacrifices ). A torture method
of the Aztecs that might be

A Narrative Of Me And You Written By Niccolo Ammaniti s...
A narrative bears many similarities to a snowflake. All snowflakes are composed of exactly the same
material, but when scrutinized, no two are the same. The same can be said about two narratives which
may contain the same story but the meaning can change when recounted by different narrators. The
difference in narratives can be observed in the novel and film adaptation of Me and You written by
Niccolò Ammaniti s and directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. All stories contain a mixture of constituent
and supplementary events. The overall constituent events that must be present in Me and You are that
Lorenzo must first lie about leaving for a week long ski trip, then he must hide in a cellar, after which
Olivia rest with her brother until the week ends. Both Ammaniti and Bertolucci insert supplementary
events that although do not move the story forward or directly affect the constituent events, add
meaning to their perspective of the story. The supplementary event which Ammaniti attaches to his
narrative occurs when he writes the scene about Lorenzo and his mother were stuck in a traffic jam on
the Corso Vittorio. On the other hand, Bertolucci incorporates the scene where Oliva invites a friend to
the cellar to further strengthen his vision for his narrative. Meanwhile Ammaniti crafts his narrative to
present the reader with Italy s imperfections and perfections, Bertolucci limits the audience s
knowledge of the Italy outside of Lorenzo s bunker to bring us to a closer meaning of

The Day With The Patients Of Regent Care
On February 5, 2016, I had the privilege to spend the day with the patients of Regent Care. I was
accompanied by my classmates from the Communication Disorders program. As I walked into the
facilities cafeteria we gathered around the round tables. As we waited for instructions our professor
gave us an overview of what we were expected to do. There were big squared plastic bins that were
filled with different kinds of supplies. As we assisted our peers get the supplies out of the bin we
began to separate and organize the supplies by activities. We began by cleaning the round tables with
water. After they were dry we began setting up the different stations. There were about five activities
which included getting their nails done, decorating a picture frame, decorating a bag, painting figures
as arts and crafts and bowling. There was an elderly woman sitting by herself in one of the round
tables looking at us set up the activities. I approached her by asking her if she wanted to decorate a
bag. She looked at me with a smile and said, si, claro con gusto. I opened the package of fabric
painted and lined up the paint in front of her where she was able to reach all five colors. As I called
out each color she told me her favorite color was green. I asked what she wanted to write or draw on
the bag, but she replied by saying, yo no se. Yo no puedo pensar. I was saddened to hear her say she
was not capable of thinking. I encouraged her by saying, let s write your name! she

Gordon Brown s Silent No More, Questions And Answers
Silent No More Research Paper
Scotland held its independence referendum on September 18th, 2014. The Scottish Nationalist Party
wanted to hold this vote in order to give the people of Scotland a say in whether or not their country
would stay in the UK. In his speech, Silent No More , Gordon Brown urges his audience to have the
confidence in saying no to Scotland s independence.
Since the Act of Union in 1707, Scotland has been a part of the UK. Until 1997, all important
decisions regarding Scotland and the rest of the UK were made by the Westminster Parliament in
London. However, Scotland has always maintained its own education system, law and justice system,
church, and sports teams (the Guardian). In 1979, a referendum was held ... Show more content on

He begins with saying that the vote is not about whether or not Scotland is nation; we are, yesterday,
today, and tomorrow. ( Silent No More ). Brown says this in order to exaggerate the fact that Scotland
has always been its own standing nation and the vote will not change anything. This pushes patriotic
audience members to vote no since Brown has confirmed that Scotland is already an independent
nation. Gordon Brown repeats the phrase It s not about to clarify to the people who are not sure which
side to vote on that either way the vote will not change any aspects of Scotland that he mentions. He
then changes the pattern to say that the vote is about whether [they] want to break and sever every link
between Scotland and the UK. This powerful line both defines what he believes independence will do
to the union as well as delivering that statement using negative language. To conclude this section of
the speech, Brown suggests that his audience tell the undecided, the waverers, [and] those not sure
how to vote what Scotland and the UK have achieved together. Brown s intention is to unite and
widen his audience of people who believe voting for independence is the wrong

Conservation of Linear Momentum
Objective
The primary goal of this experiment was to study the force that a jet generates on hemispherical, flat,
and conical surfaces. Further, the experiment exposed students to the concept of linear momentum
conservation by observing forces that a jet of water exerts on objects with different shapes.
Results and Graphs Figure 1: Forces Acting on the x and y axis
As can be seen, the forces that act on the x direction are caused by pressure at sections 1 and 2.
Similarly, an expression that relates the conservation of linear momentum in the Y direction can be
developed.
Discussion
Although the experiment was successful, some errors occurred during the experiment that made most
values to deviate from the expected ones. Generally, both fixed and random errors were observed
(Mitchell Worledge, 2015). The random errors, in this case, resulted into statistical fluctuations in the
measured data because of the limitations in precision measurement. Additionally, the random errors
occurred due to inability to take the same measurements as the expected ones. Furthermore, fixed
errors were responsible for reduced inaccuracies in the values obtained (Valiani Caleffi, 2011).
However, the best way to minimize random errors is by averaging

Strengths Of The Immune System And Ayurveda
Immune system and Ayurveda
What is Immune system:
The immune system is made up of a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect
the body. One of the important cells involved are white blood cells, also called leukocytes, which
come in two basic types that combine to seek out and destroy disease causing organisms or
substances.
What cause immune system to weaken:
Anything that weakens your immune system can lead to a secondary immunodeficiency disorder. Low
consumption of protein in your diet can weaken your immune system. Your body also produces
proteins when you sleep that help your body fight infection. For this reason, lack of sleep reduces your
immune defenses. There are several other factors too which cause the weakness of immune system.
How to Boost Immune system with Ayurveda:
If our Immune system is weak, that means our defense system is low and can result in several kind of
illness such as Fever, Flu and fatigue. It is very important to enhance your immune system so that it
can fight with the different kind of viruses and keep us safe. There are a lot of foods which can

Essay on Kate Chopin
Kate Chopin
The Story of an Hour
The story The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, written in 1894, is about a woman gaining
independence and experiencing a new freedom, due to the death of her husband. The topic of the story
was rather scandalous at the end of the 19th century. Women had no control over their property and
weren t allowed to request a divorce.
Luise Mallard is a young wife (p.78, 3rd paragraph). She immediately feels grief and starts to cry
when Richards gives her the news about the death of her husband. But directly after her outburst, the
reader can already make out signs about how her feelings will change. In the story are several
symbols, showing the approaching of a new life. Through the open window Mrs. ... Show more

That doesn t mean that she didn t lover her husband, she loved him sometimes (p. 78, last paragraph).
And she knows that she has to cry again when she ll see him dead at his funeral. But this grief won t
hold her back to enjoy the new life that lies ahead of her. She looks forward to the coming years (p.
78, 6th paragraph, end), she even hopes that she will have a long life, so that she can fully enjoy her
freedom (p. 79, 3rd paragraph, end).
But Mrs. Mallard will never lead such al life because her husband is not dead. When he comes
through the door, directly after she realized what a life without her husband means to her, she is
shocked. She dies because of her heart trouble, already mentioned at the beginning of the story (p.77,
first sentence) and therefore foreshadowing what could happen in the end.
The question is, what reason made her heart fail? The doctor says it was joy that kills (p. 79, last
sentence) and because of this last statement irony is created. The reader knows more than the
characters do because of the change of perspective when Mrs. Mallard goes up to her room. The
narrator changes from an authorial narrator to a personal narrator and the reader gets a detailed
description of her feelings. This mind style enables us to suspect what the sudden appearance of Mr.
Mallard could mean for Luise. It was certainly not joy that Brently Mallard is still alive that killed her.

Be As You Are, By Mike Posner
In Mike Posner s song Be As You Are he shows the importance of individuality. As he sings about
being different, himself, he shows understanding of the pressures brought upon people who influence
individuality or are different. If your friends cannot stand you as yourself, it shows who they really
were and they wanted you for a different reason than you wanted. Even if nobody stands with you for
individuality, you will always be yourself and that s the best you that you can be. Hence, it is your
greatest achievement just to have individuality.
First and foremost, having belief in and having individuality can improve mood and emotion control.
With individuality and an increased mood, the path to ultimate happiness is revealed. In other words,

In similar terms, you won t have to care about fitting in or if you match and follow perfectly, because
it won t matter! As an illustration, in my third and last school, the one I m in now, I was too loud.
Now, two years since I came, I ve learned to control it more but it s not always easy. Sometimes, I slip
up but it s not uncommon for someone to slip up once, right? Anyways, I m not scared to be loud and I
have no insecurities about my voice or anything.
Although some believe following someone else is best, this is a fallacy. Individuality is best because
you know who you are. Don t care about what others think, it s what you think that matters the most.
Being free to care about yourself is better than caring about what others think and following them.
When everyone is gone the only one there is you. Who will control you then? You will control
yourself so it s best to do that from the start than to follow others for no reason.
In conclusion, individuality is best. With an increased mood, leadership, and decrease in insecurities,
individuality is better than following others just to hit a brick wall or have opposite and harmful
effects. Although following is easy; is it worth it? Having individuality brings in so many good things
to your life, and it can be

Causes Of Neururodevelopmental Disorders
Based on the fact that ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, there have been multiple studies
researching the neuroanatomical abnormalities found in ASD individuals. There have been a number
of those abnormalities associated with ASD (Donovan Basson, 2017). In the most recent study,
Donovan Basson, found the frontal cortex and the amygdala of an ASD individual s brain during the
early postnatal period has a tendency to overgrow followed by normalization, or even decrease, in
volume and cellularity, when compared to neurotypical individuals (2017). They described the
function of the frontal cortex of the brain to be in charge of executive functions (e.g., higher order

From the results of the study, the investigators found that the participants with ASD showed lower
correct response rates for recognizing affect via emotional words and facial emoticons. They also
found that the part of the brain, called the fusiform gyrus, in the participants with ASD had a greater
activation rate during emotional word tasks when compared to their typically developing peers.
Interestingly, the investigators found that the fusiform gyrus of the participants with ASD had less of
an activation response to facial emoticons when compared to their typically developing peers (Han et
al., 2014).
Studies have also shown that the difficulty that individuals with ASD have with the acquisition and
understanding of humor is the effect of their deficits in theory of mind (ToM) (Semrud Clikeman
Glass, 2008; Jaegher, 2013; Samson, 2013; Whyte, Nelson, Scherf, 2014; Wu et al., 2014). Theory of
mind can be defined as the ability to understand and assign beliefs, traits, and emotions to oneself and
others, in other words the ability to put oneself in another s shoes (Semrud Clikeman Glass, 2008;
Samson, 2014; Wu et al., 2014). ToM is a complex linguistic ability (Wu et al., 2014). Emerich et al.,

Equality In Harrison Bergeron
In his story Harrison Bergeron, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. ( 1961) proves that not all of mankind can be equal.
Vonnegut sets his story in 2081, where everyone is equal. No one is smarter, more talented, stronger,
or better looking. The government in his story controlled everyone and how they acted and thought
with machines. Those who were smarter had a mental handicap radio s in their ear that made a noise
every so often throwing them off the train of thought. The stronger ones had to carry around weight at
all times, to make them equal to the weak. Those who were beautiful had to wear mask, or were made
to look less beautiful. All competition was gone. However, Vonnegut shows that trying to control
everyone, so all are equal is impossible, and can lead to disastrous things. In the story, Harrison
Bergeron was arrested for suspicion of overthrowing the government. He escaped jail and on the TV
episode of the ballerinas, people watched him take over. He allowed himself and others to take off the
equipment controlling them and everyone became an individual again. Until, the leader came in and
killed Harrison and the beautiful ballerina as they were dancing. Things became equal again, but not
perfect.
Vonnegut successfully makes point, that trying to make a perfect world, where all things are equal, is
impossible and will cause trouble. In the 1960 s equal rights were a big goal to achieve. People aiming
towards equal rights for blacks, women, and even homosexuals. Vonnegut uses

Rapid Critical Appraisal
Was it really rapid or was it more of a laborious process? In my opinion, the rapid critical appraisal
(RCA) process was not rapid. It was a process requiring considerable effort and time. Though tedious,
the RCA process helped me to stay focused, analyze in depth information about the studies, and select
most relevant articles that would be beneficial in answering the PICOT question and appropriate for
my evidence based practice(EBP) proposal. According to Melnyk Fineout Overholt (2015), RCA is
one of the key components to the evidence based practice process. It helps to evaluate the validity,
reliability, and applicability of a research article. Did reading the abstract help you make quick
decisions about including or excluding the study? Reading the abstract was absolutely a helpful
strategy in sifting through the articles. It helped me to make quick decisions about including or

In this article, Pasek also determines that children under three years of age in no way benefit from

determine whether or not watching television to great amounts is affecting the eating habits and
psyche of young children. A study published by US Journal Pediatrics found that more psychological
difficulties dealing with peers, emotional issues, and hyperactivity are likely to develop with children
who spend numerous hours daily in front of television or playing video games (Yahoo! News n.pag).
Researchers studied 1,013 children ages 10 to 11 and had them complete a 25 point questionnaire, a

my extract, as well as the effects of the narrative structure and if it conforms or diverges from the
typical models of narrative structure. I am also going to be analysing the characterisation of different
figures in my extract and the impressions these give on the characters. I will also be looking at how
dialogue is represented and the overall effects of different devices. I am expecting to find that
Vonnegut uses a mixture of different perspectives throughout which may be difficult to extract from

In doing so, this suggests that even though he is of a higher rank than them they don t see him this way
and see no need to pay attention to him. Bob would be therefore losing his higher status and is trying
to regain it by delivering an influential speech.
During the dialogue between Wild Bob and Billy it is important to note the act of turn taking. As Billy
withholds participation, Bob is forced to speak again, meaning that turn taking is not fulfilled here.
This gives the impression that Billy is a weak character who isn t really aware of the situation and
appears to have little knowledge about the topic. Billy couldn t remember the outfit he was from
(Vonnegut 1969: 55).
As Bob speaks for longer, and has a lot more turns in the conversation than Billy it shows that he in
charge of the soldiers and his status is evident through this conversation. He also controls the topic of
the conversation. Again, this displays that despite his physical and mental health he is still a strong,
sure and higher status soldier than Billy and it is evident that Billy recognises this.
Next I will discuss the characterisation throughout my extract. Firstly I will consider how thought is
represented. The main representation of thought that the narrator uses is indirect though. This can be
seen firstly where the narrator reports on what Roland Weary is thinking All Weary could think about
was the agony in his own feet (Vonnegut 1969: 55). This type of

In order for someone to define themself, it requires looking deep into their life experiences and
determine what has helped form us into who we are. We cannot define our self by our others see us,
but only by who we truly know we are.
I do not feel there is a way that the same person can exist at different times, at least here on earth.
There is one person, per body, that has one soul. Once the physical body dies, then the person s soul
lives on. I guess someone could look at a person exising at different times, such as their personality
traits and qualities in their children. I have heard many say, Your daughter is so funny and has the
same personality as her father. Does that mean that in a sense, my husband is existing at different
times in himself and through my daughter? I m not sure. There is one way for sure that the same
person can exist at different times, and that is during life here on earth and then after death when the
soul moves on to either heaven or hell, depending on the the life choices the person made while living.

Fog Computing Of Smart City Essay
FOG COMPUTING IN SMART CITY
Arti Agrahari
Abstract: This paper represents a novel idea on how Fog computing can be used to manage the
immense data generated in smart city. Fog computing can also be called as edge computing, is a
distributed computing infrastructure in nature, for smart devices like mobile phones the application
services should be maintained near the end user side but the services are handled at remote data server
i.e. in cloud. Our aim is to reduce the amount of storage required, the time required in data processing
and data analysis and the propagation time in cloud computing. Thus by handling data at network edge
latency can be reduced and efficiency can be improved. In smart city where the predicted data
generation seems to be high enough can be stored at network edge giving better performance in city
by reducing latency.

also be achieved by fogging. Fog computation takes place at network edge and the data of smart

The New England s New World
Essay 1
In order to practice religious freedoms, Puritans fled from England to the New World. The New World
represented potential and freedoms that were unattainable in England. The New England settlers
overcame adversities and created challenges that would go on to change the course of history. When
they first arrived, their inexperience was shown through the death of nearly half their colony in the
first year. The introduction of the Wampanoag tribe to the New England colony was such a crucial
component to their survival and a primary reason they were able to sustain and even increase their
population. The New England colony proved to be successful in establishing a necessary relationship
with the Wampanoag, thriving through their protestant work ethic, and ultimately creating a stable
settlement; however, they failed when it came to maintaining that stable relationship with the
Wampanoag, their lack of experience in the New World, and the hypocritical tendencies of their
actions.
When the Pilgrims first arrived, they were not hesitant about claiming land and getting right to work.
Their protestant work ethic ensured that they worked hard because there was a high moral obligation
to fulfill ones duty in worldly affairs. Worldly success is a sign of God s favor, so when they landed
upon an abandoned Indian village they took it as a sign from God that they were on the right path and
were being rewarded. They established communities of family farmers, which proved to be

Electronic Warfare Analysis Paper
Electronic Warfare Analysis of Army SINCGARS Radios Operation tempo in cyber and electronic
warfare can be described by the OODA (Observe Orient Decision Action) loop decision making
process (Pace). The steps occupy a logical order of electronic attack or defense. First, a particular
electromagnetic characteristic is observed by either human or electronic operators. For example, a
spike in a frequency known to be used by the enemy, indicating a potential target for electronic attack,
or a sudden increase in noise on friendly systems which could indicate jamming by an adversary.
Orientation is the allocation of resources to either exploit or counter the observed characteristic, such
as reconfiguring analog or digital tuners, clocks, or filters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This would render conversation intelligible, as every second of transmission would include a static
burst that would cause information to be lost. In mathematical terms, this means the 25 kHz wide
jamming signal must sweep through the entire bandwidth every second. With 2320 channels, this
yields a required tempo for the jammer as: 0.43 ms. The required operational tempo to effectively jam
the SINCGARS radio is much higher than operational tempo required to frequency hop. This can be
explained by looking at the bandwidth cost for the hopped radio and the swept jammer. The radio hops
111 times per second, with each hop being a distinct channel, but has 2320 channels to choose from.
Each second only uses a small part of the total bandwidth, specifically 2.7 MHz out of an available 58
MHz. In contrast, the jammer is blind to the hop pattern, and must sweep over the entire 58 MHz once
a second to have a chance of interrupting at least one

Running Head: SEPSIS DETECTION AND TREATMENT

March28, 2009
Sepsis Early Detection and Treatment Severe Sepsis affects 750,000 Americans and causes more than
200,000 deaths annually. Sepsis is a complex condition that results from an infectious process that
represents the body s response to infection and involves systemic inflammatory and cellular events
that result in altered circulation and coagulation, endothelial dysfunction and impaired tissue perfusion
(Kleinpell, 2005). Associated mortality rates with sepsis in the United States have remained largely

Treatment of Sepsis
As stated in Rivers, Nguyed, Havstad, Ressler, Muzzin, Knolich et al. (2001):
Early hemodynamic assessment on the basis of physical findings, vital signs, central venous pressure,
and urinary output fails to detect persistent global tissue hypoxia. A more definitive resuscitation
strategy involves goal oriented manipulation of cardiac preload, afterload, and contractility to achieve
a balance between systemic oxygen delivery and oxygen demand. End points used to confirm the
achievement of such a balance (hereafter called resuscitation end points) include normalized values
for mixed venous oxygen saturation, arterial lactate concentration, base deficit, and pH. Mixed venous
oxygen saturation has been shown to be a surrogate for the cardiac index as a target for hemodynamic
therapy. In cases in which the insertion of a pulmonary artery catheter is impractical, venous oxygen
saturation can be measured in the central circulation (p. 1368).
The focus for the general care nurse outside of the ICU is to be able to recognize sepsis and to initiate
appropriate interventions in an appropriate amount of time. Nurses need to facilitate the transfer of the
patient to an ICU as urgently as possible. Once sepsis is suspected, it is important to closely monitor
patients for signs and symptoms of progression with increasing frequency of assessments. While
awaiting transfer of a patient to the ICU

Hotel Industry is a very lucrative sector that can generate high amount of revenue if proper strategies
are established. According to Statista (2014), the worldwide hotel industry is estimated to generate
about $550 billion in revenue in the year 2016. In their statistics, the company that is contributing the
largest part of this revenue is the British hotel chain, Intercontinental Hotels Group which generated
about $21.6 billion in 2013 (Statista Corporation, 2014). The Intercontinental Hotels Group has more

This will attract all types of suppliers including the labor suppliers. Again, they can use better
technology that can minimize wastages along the supply chain. A sustainable strategy should be to
uphold a stable cost effective labor supply over its probable competitors.
The overall industry structure
The Hotel Industry is characterized by large capital outlays, and elevated proportion of fixed expenses.
The competition mainly entails costs and differentiation of products and services. Income from any
hotel project can be upheld through room sales, food and beverage, exhibitions and conventions,
entertainments, shopping complex, car parking service, and Neon Signage.
According to Porter, major rivalry arises from growth rate of the industry, number and size of
competitors, product differentiation, capacity augmentation, exit barriers and variety, and switching
costs. However, there is no switching of costs within the hotel industry.
The Hotel Industry in key cities has very high exit barriers. Therefore, there is a substantial diversity
in strategy and endeavors of corporations owning the hotels. For example, an airline can consider
maintaining a hotel to attract and retain the

The Discovery Of The Dark Races
In nineteen thirteen, Isak Dinesen and her husband Bror settled in present day Kenya, and Isak s life
changed dramatically (Stanley and Milne 195). A former Danish aristocrat, Isak became the owner of
a coffee farm, the superior squatter (Dinesen 89) of the Kikuyu tribe that lived and worked on her
farm, and a friend to many different cultures within East Africa. The discovery of the dark races was
to me a magnificent enlargement of all my world (Dinesen 20). It is important to remember that while
Isak was friends with the Kikuyu and Somali people, it is clear that her European culture ranked
superior to theirs. But I felt the silent overshadowed existence of the Natives running parallel with my
own, on a different plane (Dinesen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many middle and upper class Europeans found this offer very appealing (Schow 48).
They would stand no nonsense from their own country or their own relations, but they took the
drought of the African Highlands, and a case of sun stroke, the Rinderpest on their cattle, and the
incompetency of their Native servants, with humility and resignation. (Dinesen 20) With colonization
comes the natural idea that the settlers have a right of superiority over the indigenous people. This idea
held to be true in almost all of European colonization in Africa (Stanley and Milne 198), but Isak
Dinesen and her relationships with African people and cultures were special. Unlike most of her
fellow Europeans, Dinesen embraces the differences she finds between herself and the East Africans
and often adopts their customs and attitudes. Her relationship with them evolves into friendship
(Stanley and Milne 198). Besides Isak and her fellow Europeans, the most important ethnic group and
culture in Out of Africa were the Kikuyu people. By the 1880s, the Kikuyu had moved into the more
or less empty lands in the middle of which Dinesen and her husband would later have their farm
general (Moss and Wilson 291). The Kikuyu were seen as a stubborn people that would allow settlers
to effect their ways in as little amount as possible. For he will really rather die than change his ways
(Dinesen 63). Stanley and Milne agree, stating on page 201, the only

Evolution Of The Baseball Bat
The evolution of the baseball bat dates back to when baseball was a growing sport. The first wood bats
cannot be compared with today s wood bats, and the BESR bats of the past cannot be compared with
the modern BBCOR bats. The first wood baseball bats were considered sticks because they did not
have a lot of pop, which is how hard the ball bounces off of the bat. As the wood bat progressed, the
ball began to fly farther and travel faster. This change in wood baseball bats can be related to the
change in metal bats. When metal bats were first introduced, they were considered inferior to wood
bats until the new and improved BESR bats were introduced. These bats had more pop than ever
before, and were considered dangerous. Because of this danger, the BBCOR bats had to be introduced
in 2011. Because of the major advances in technology, bat manufacturers are able to tune the bats to
the BBCOR certifiable level. The introduction of BBCOR bats into college and high school baseball
has moved the game in a positive direction by making baseball more realistic, creating a safer game,
and making it easier to project a player s future.
First of all, baseball bats come in many different shapes and sizes for all levels of play. The youth
baseball bats have a different level of pop than the adult version of the baseball bats. For instance, the
youth baseball bats have a pop level of 1.15, and the adult versions of the bats have a pop level of .50.
When a ball hits the barrel of any bat, it

In savants the encounters of impressive abilities are always linked to extraordinary memory. This one
of a kind memory is very impressive, but only within a very narrow area. For example, a savant may
be able to memories the dictionary, but ask that same person a simple math question, they would be
puzzled to figure it out. The skills often associated with savant syndrome are the ability to play the
piano beautifully, meaning complex pieces one would need months to learn by ear alone , (Howe 955).
Being able to give a day of the week from any past or future date, and solving complex math problems
extremely fast are also common feats performed by savants. Another interesting skill some savants
possess is the perfect appreciation of time without the knowledge of a clock. (Howe 956)
One example of a fictional savant is Forrest Gump, played by Tom Hanks. Forrest was born with an
IQ of seventy five, witch is lower than the average student able to go to public school. Forrest had
problems learning to read, walking properly, and even learning his left from right. Only after having
his mother pull some strings was he able to go to a normal public school. While attending public high
school he was constantly harassed by boys of his own age and older. An example of this occurs when
Forrest comes home from school and is followed by boys in his class who chased him throwing rocks.
As Forrest grew older, people took advantage of him more and more.

Analysis Of Marie De FranceBy Marie De France
Marie de France begins her story by describing Bisclavret, her main character, as well as defining
what a werewolf is: a ferocious beast which, when possessed by this madness, devours men, causes
great damage and dwells in vast forests (de France, 68). She wants to relate the two by allowing the
reader to decide what she means by the descriptions and why she would correlate them. De France
does a little play and twists the monsters throughout her story. Being a werewolf, Bisclavret may start
out as a monster without; and, at first, his wife seems to be so beautiful and innocent, but there lied a
monster within her. Later in the story, Bisclavret is no more than a human being, and his wife s
monstrousness shows from within and she transforms into a monster without. The themes gathered
from this story are the relationship between love and suffering, justice, and the wife who may be at
first likable, but then changes the way that monsters are viewed. In order to modify the stereotypes of
what a monster is, de France made Bisclavret, a werewolf, the good guy, and his beautiful wife, an
unforeseen bad guy. The wife in the story Bisclavret portrays a trustworthy, loving wife, until she
reacts quite differently to him being honest with whom he really is. Her character is the very thing,
which makes the reader reconsider the definition of a monster and the truth about monsters within.
The relationship between Bisclavret and his wife seems to be a very good and healthy bond

2.2 Local Capabilities Australia is a competitive market. The strength and success of local brands and
designers have been well able to compete successfully against high profile imported and designer
goods. Internationally, Australia is best known for its beachwear, bushwear (e.g. outback, outdoor
clothing), urbanwear and high fashion. Currently there are over 5,000 fashion labels in Australia6 7
and more than 2,000 companies export fashion. 2.3 International Competition China dominates the
Australian import market due to its low cost. This has increased the pressure on local firms to compete
on price. This has resulted not only in a contraction of the domestic industry but also in a new focus
on specialization and innovation. The international fashion and apparel industry presence in Australia
is noticeably less than other western markets, such as Canada or Japan. For example, large
international firms such as H M, Zara, Top Shop or The Gap do not have stores in Australia. However,
as economies begin to recover from the global financial crisis, The Gap, Abercrombie Fitch, and Zara
have expressed interest in the Australian marketplace. 2.4 Canadian Position Canadian fashion and
apparel is regarded as having innovative design and quality. However, few designers and brands are
well known in the Australian market.

Atlantic Transformations
The Earth has undergone a series of physical transformations throughout its history, and every
transformation changes the way things such as water currents, heat circulation, and climate manifest.
Twenty million years ago, the Atlantic and Pacific oceans flowed freely between North and South
America because there was no land barrier between them, which meant that the salinity of the oceans
were similar. This meant that warm water vapor wasn t being carried up to the North Atlantic, like
happens today. When the pacific plate was pushed under the Caribbean plate volcanoes, islands, and
eventually the body of land that connects North and South America formed. This caused the currents
of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to go towards the north,

about the Cold War that really made him so undesirable among the people. Extremism just wasn t
okay with the people. An important piece of all this information is that the Democrats won the votes of
the Solid South during that election, which previously had been dependably Republican states. Race
may be one of the largest factors for this. Democrats traditionally had been supporters of the Civil
Rights movement, which caused many white southerners to abandon the Democratic Party. While the
Goldwater election was the first that this was seen, it was the Nixon election that really took
advantage of this. With the southern strategy the white men that left the Democratic Party were
swooped up and now a part of the Republican Party. Nixon was the Tough on Crime candidate, he also
had the anti hippie movement, the moral conservatives, and the anti Civil Rights people. Nixon was
resting easy, however as the next election drew near disaster for Nixon

Chronicle of a Death Foretold, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Works Cited Not Included
Chronicle of a Death Foretold, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, is a story that brings one to question the
code of honor that exists in the
Columbian town. Marquez paints a picture that shows how societal values, such as honor, have
become more important than the inherent good of human life. The Vicario brothers belief that their
sister was done wrong was brought upon by this honor, along with racial and social tension. The
dangerous path of both honor and religious faith caused Santiago s untimely death.
Before God and before men, Pablo Vicario said. It was a matter of honor (Marquez 56). In the town
honor is taken very seriously and

Angela simply named
Santiago Nasar as her lover but there was no other evidence besides her word to back that statement
up. The narrator explained that most of those who could have done something to prevent the crime
and did not console themselves with the pretext that affairs of honor are sacred monopolies, giving
access only to those who are part of the drama (114). If the medieval idea that death brings honor is
true, then it is safe to say Santiago Nasar died without honor for he did not know the reason for his
death was.
The Vicarios were poor Hispanics and the Nasars were rich Arabs, so social and racial tension was
clear. In the town though, honor is not defined by race or color. The Vicario brothers are cousins to
Santiago, yet when Santiago died the Arab families were perplexed and sadâ?¦but none harbored the
ideas of vengeance (94). After they killed
Santiago, the brothers went to the parish house, not for repentance, but because they would be safe
from the Arabs (91) and were comforted by the honor of having done their duty, and the only thing
that worried them was the persistence of the smell [of death] (91).
Before their release, their mother Pura asked Father Amador to confess her sons in jail, but Pedro
Vicario refused, and convinced his brother that they had nothing to repent (95). That scene gives the
reader a picture of how the twins viewed the killing as being above their religion,

Comparing Emotion In As She s Walking Away And If I Told You
Country music is generally simple in form and harmony, typified by romantic or melancholy ballads,
with lyrics that tell a memorable story. Songs can tell similar stories of internal struggle as to whether
or not to speak from the heart, but can also differ completely in use of emotion. Through imagery and
repetition, the listener can relate to the main message and have a deeper understanding of the theme.
Despite their emotional and lyrical differences, As She s Walking Away by Zac Brown
Band and If I Told You by Darius Rucker, both songs portray a lack of courage and similar insecurities
in asking the question, What if? .
There are countless times in a person s life when they ask, What if? . In If I Told You, the lyrics depict
the internal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though the same What if? theme is represented in As She s Walking Away, the lyrics give imagery of
the internal struggle of being too shy to speak from his heart. A whimsical melody plays as his foolish
pride and fear of falling on his face have him falling in love with the girl that he has never spoken to
as she s walking away .
In both songs, the repetition of the lyrics draws the listener s attention to particular words and phrases.
In the melancholy ballad, If I Told You, Rucker repeats the lines, If I told you all the stupid things I ve
done, I d blamed on being young, but I was old enough to know, I know , If I told you the mess I can
be when there s no one there to see and could you look the other way cause you love me anyway . The
soulful singer is emphasizing with raw emotions, the fear of baring one s soul to the person they love
and unknowing how they will react to it. In the romantic song, As She s Walking Away,
Brown repeats the lines, My heart won t tell my mind to tell my mouth what it should say , You might
fall down on your face, roll the dice and have some faith and Don t be falling in love as she s

Limited Liability in Group Companies
Corporate groups can be defined as a company structure where several companies are interconnected
through contract shareholding or as Dine says, By interlocking dictatorships. In these structure holding
companies usually have control and influence over subsidiaries. Limited liability on the other hand, is
the logical consequence of the existence of a separate legal entity or generally, the concept simply
means that since the company is different from the shareholders, the members are only liable for the
amount unpaid or their shares and not for the debts of the company When limited liability is easily and
cheaply available can be explained as removing unnecessary legal bars which can be an inhibition to

of business for the purpose of obtaining credit. This allows companies to extend their business
gambles to other legal forms largely other companies in different degrees and forms through share
buyouts or incorporation of subsidiaries. Secondly, limited liability minimizes risks for the investors:
Since modern governments want to see enterprise flourish, they attach great value to business.
However because business involves potential risks, limited liability comes in as a motivation in case
of failure and potentially attracts as many people into business through becoming a contracting tool
and financing device and investors are certain that their personal assets are safe as the rule is kind of
security. Furthermore, limited liability increases the value of assets: When creditors know the
subsidiary they are dealing with, it allows specific stakeholders to closely monitor where their
interests are most vested. It brings about accountability, transparency and quality management as the
directors are cautious that their activities will get to the public domain leading to quality service with a

Income tax assessments are computed for a tax year of assessment. They are based on a taxpayer s
total income for the year from all sources and it does not include income exempt from income tax.
Taxable Persons
Persons resident in the UK for a tax year are charged to income tax on their total income for that year
(includes both income arising in the UK and income arising overseas). There are two exceptions to the
rule; some forms of income are fully exempt from income tax; and UK residents whose permanent
home is not in the UK may claim that the income they make overseas should be subject to UK income
tax only to the extent that the income is remitted to the UK. Non UK residents are allowed to pay
income tax on only their UK income. Income tax is payable by: * Adults, on their own income and on
their share of partnership income * Children, if they have sufficient income to pay tax * Trustees, on
the income of a trust or settlement * Personal representatives, on income arising from the estate of a
deceased person.
Some individuals and organisations are generally exempt from income tax subject to various
restrictions and exemptions. They include: * Companies (pay corporation tax) * Registered charities
and scientific research associations, except on trading income * Registered pension schemes *

Romeo And Juliet Vs West Side Story
Despite the contrasting differences of West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet, the modern director
captures Shakespeare s original themes and ideas in West Side Story. Because West Side Story is a
movie musical, it will be a lot of narrative conveyed through the song. While in the Romeo and Juliet
we will be more find the characters says to himself or herself using poetic words of Shakespeare. That
is the general differences that clearly visible on both movie. But if we examine in more detail, the
movie West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet have many similarities and differences consider their
plot, their character and their setting. Initially, both movies West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet

In both story, the main character is come from different group which hate each other. In Romeo and
Juliet, Romeo is the Montague and Juliet is Capulet, and we know that Montague and Capulet is
enemy for long time. In West Side Story, Tony is an American (Jets) and Maria is Puerto Rican
(Sharks), which each group is a rival. The main men characters have the same character that is
extreme emotion. It show when Romeo sneaked into Capulet territory to meet Juliet, and when he
killed Tybalt in duel, also when he committed suicide upon erroneously believing Juliet is dead. With
Tony we can see when he killed Bernardo after heated argument and when he challenge Chino to kill
him because he was killed his love. But they have same character that has the courage to live with his
love although their family was forbid them. The differences I saw in the main women character. Juliet
is different with Maria, although their purity and their faith to their love are same. Maria is look more
exited and enthusiastic about her life, from the way she talks and act. Juliet is made up to be a weak
character because she is wont stand up for what she believe is wrong, like when she is forcing by her
mother to marry Paris. But at the end we can see how strong the character in Juliet when she fight for
her husband Romeo and when he sacrifice her life for Romeo. And

Cultural And Intellectual History At The University Of...
Karen Halttunen is currently a professor of U.S. cultural and intellectual history at the University of
Southern California. She has previously taught at the University of California Davis and Northwestern
University after receiving her B.A. in History and Religious Studies from Brown University in 1973
and her Ph.D. from Yale University in 1979. Halttunen is the author of Confidence Men and Painted
Women: A Study of Middle Class Culture in America, 1830 1870 (1982) and Murder Most Foul: The
Killer and the American Gothic Imagination (1998). She is currently working on a piece focusing on
landscape and antiquity in 19th century New England. Her thesis in Confidence Men and Painted
Women: A Study of Middle Class Culture in America, 1830 1870 is that, In an open, urban society, the
powerful images of the confidence man and painted woman expressed the deep concern of status
conscious social climbers that they themselves and those around them were passing for something
they were not (xv). The Era of the Confidence Man is the first chapter of this thrilling exposition and
it dives into the social origins of the confidence man. The chapter starts out quite similarly to an
advice manual and begins with warning the reader that young men are in fact moldable pieces of wax
and highly impressionable beings who must never fall prey to the confidence men. The advice manual
then proceeds to enumerate the different kinds of confidence men: the urban companions, the
demagogues,

Essay Suspense in the Film Jaws
Suspense in the Film Jaws
In this essay I will be analysing the film Jaws. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg whose other
works include Indiana Jones and E.T. Jaws is a fascinating and entertaining film mainly because of its
interesting and diverse plot. The people of Amity Island used to live a peaceful and quiet life in the
small summer resort town in America. Now however, the people of the small town have become
victim to a man eating Great White Shark. The town officials hesitate to warn people about the shark
for fear of losing business during their busiest time of year, Fourth of July weekend. Therefore the
shark is kept quiet from the town until a child is attacked in broad daylight ... Show more content on

For instance, whenever an attack occurs, the music ends up being extremely fast, then slowing
considerably and then stopping altogether resulting in complete silence. This silence after each attack
frightens the audience because they realise how quickly something awful, like the event they have just
witnessed, can happen and how quickly it can end. It also reminds them that the shark is still out there
and will continue to carry out these attacks. In addition, before the first attack occurs a group of
teenagers are having a bonfire and at this point someone is playing a mouth organ. When the boy and
the girl run off, we suddenly hear the sound of the mouth organ gently disappearing. This shows that
the two are travelling away from safety and peace into the abyss of the dark sea where they are
unaware of what is lurking there. It also signifies how alone and desolate they are.
The second attack occurs on a crowded beach, a venue where everyone feels safe. Contrary to popular
belief this is not true though, as recent studies have shown that Great White Sharks are often found in
just three feet of water. This supposedly safe environment is emphasised with a mid shot that gives a
good perspective of a relaxed environment with people enjoying the sun and generally having a good
time. A dolly zoom on Brody shows an anxious face that is not completely satisfied about the safety of

Catcher In The Rye Events
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger described various events, some of which were very significant
toward the plot and ultimately the protagonist, Holden Caulfield. Events such as the death of Holden s
brother, Allie, his visit to a hotel and a nightclub in New York City and his meeting with Phoebe at the
end of the book are such events as they help the reader understand the viewpoint of Holden, such as
his depression, thoughts on certain topics such as death, and his change in the book which was integral
in helping the reader understand the plot. Therefore, events portrayed in the book such as Allie s death,
Holden s visit to the hotel and the club, and his meeting with Phoebe at the end of the book all played
significant parts in the book. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One extremely important reason why was because at that point he was thinking of running away due
to his depression but when he was going to give Phoebe a letter stating his decision, he saw a bunch of
curse words etched into the walls of the school and tried to remove them with anger, stating I kept
wanting to kill whoever d written it. I figured it was some perverty bum that d sneaked into the school
late at night to take a leak or something and then wrote it on the wall. (pg. 221), showing that these
words made Holden want to protect Phoebe, and gave him something to live for. In addition, when he
found out that Phoebe planned to follow him to run away, he stated: I almost hated her. I think I hated
her most because she wouldn t be in that play anymore if she went away with me, (pg. 227). This
showed maturity, because it meant that Holden actually understood the ramifications of his actions, in
this case running away leading to consequences for Phoebe, and so he decided against it. When he saw
Phoebe on the carrousel, he became extremely happy, something he had not felt for a very long time
as he stated: I felt so damn happy all of a sudden, the way Phoebe kept going around and around,
(pg.233). This clearly demonstrated that this event ultimately changed Holden, perhaps for the better,
as it gave him a reason to live, and to

The Open Window Deception
Both of the short stories Like the Sun and The Open Window include lessons about deception that
have a paradox and ironic sense to them. In the first story, it has three lessons about deception that are
all equally ironic. In the second story, it only contains one main lesson of deception that show irony.
In Like the Sun Sekhar tries to tell nothing but the truth for a whole day, even though it is said being
truthful is worthier, it did not leave him with the best outcome. The first scenario was when Sekhar
told his wife that he didn t like her cooking, which ended up offending her. It was ironic once again
that he did the candid thing, however, left him with a rough out come. The second lesson was when

Naming In Tea Cake By Zora Neale
Naming is an important way in which readers can see hope affirmed or ill fated from the start, because
it adds layers of meaning to characterisation. Joe Starks superciliously narrow minded attitude towards
life renders his marriage with Janie a stark, bleak and miserable relationship where love slowly bleeds
away, (King, 1990) with each thing he denies her, leading to the first real death of her hope: something
fell off the shelf inside her... her image of Jody tumbled down and shattered in her mind s eye. Her
drifting afterwards and loss of joy in the nature she used to adore emphasises the emptiness of a life
lived without hope as there are no more blossomy openings dusting pollen over her man, neither any
glistening young fruit where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Janie is a modernisation of the Roman deity Jana and Vergible is derived from the demi god Virbius,
making him King of the woods (King, 1998), which brings hope to their union by adding in an
element of the divine thereby raising expectations. Indeed, the readers sees Tea Cake put Janie up on a
pedestal and frequently mention that Janie holds da keys tuh de kingdom , reminiscent of her
namesake s status as the highest god receiving the veneration she deserves and not da mule of de
world as Nanny feared. Sethe is a feminisation merging the Egyptian god Set and Seth from the Old
Testament, the former who commits an atrocity upon a family member, and the latter who revives
hope in God upon his birth (Mayer, 1993) alluding to the split in her maternal identity for which she
needs to seek forgiveness to have hope of redemption. Additionally, Amy becomes worthy of deeper
scrutiny given the striking fact that etymologically the name, from the Latin amatus, literally means
beloved, (Coonradt, 2005). The purpose of this strong connection between the identities of the white
girl and Sethe s daughter respectively, can interpreted by some readers as Morrison s desire to instill
hope in future generations that bridging the gulf of racism, is conceivable, by subtly showing humans
as being fundamentally the

  • 2. Anne Carson Essay Kiersten Baxley Professor Shirokova English 1102 12 September 2012 Anne Carson s Lessons Anne Carson is a very intelligent and well rounded writer. When I first read Anne Carson s Short Talks , I was seriously confused. At first, I thought she was an abstract writer that wrote just to write. But then I took a second look at her work and realized there was much more to it than just crazy jumbled ideas. Short Talks is a mixture of many elements. It has argumentation, facts, personal opinions, and an unconventional way of writing. As I was rereading the Short Talks , I noticed names, facts, and a lesson to go along with each Short Talk. This persuaded me to do some research so the stories would start to make more sense. After ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Elektra took this very hard, so she and her brother Orestes plotted revenge against her mother and step father. Elektra s father had been against things like this, but Elektra became so bitter she began to commit many crimes. So this short talk helps us decide between what is major and minor in our life. This helps to keep from overreacting over the small things in life. Another lesson comes from the short talk On Reading. This takes the reader back to their childhood. No, not everyone enjoys reading, but it is also great for you. In this short talk I got the imagery that this little girl was on a road trip with her parents, her father does not enjoy reading but she does. So while on the way to their destination, she reads Madame Bovary. While reading she takes a moment to look around at the sights passing through the window. This just gets the reader to truly think and assess the way they perceive the way they view reading. Having someone who enjoys reading, and someone who finds no pleasure in reading is what makes the world go round. Not everyone appreciates, or finds interest in the same things, but do not discourage anyone if you have no interest in it. If I were to write some short talks I could use an Anne Carson like writing style, or writing that flows eloquently. I would try to help the reader to understand what is being said, but to also think about what is before them. I would include an introduction in my short talks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Being A Clarinet Essay To start off my coat of arms I drew a clarinet in the middle. This clarinet represents something that I want to get better at in the next year. Recently I have started playing clarinet so that I could join Marching Band and Wind Ensemble. I believe that if I keep practicing every day and make a goal for a year from now to be at 2nd clarinet level, I can succeed. My motto is work hard a stay strong, so practicing and believing in myself will help me to be an expert next year. I used the colors red, blue, and green. Green symbolizes balance and growth which I need to complete my goal. Red symbolizes passion and ambition which I believe are two important qualities needed when wanting to get better at something. Blue symbolizes trust and peace. If I stay calm and trust myself I will be able to accomplish many goals, not just learning clarinet. Next, in the top right corner, I drew me saying polite phrases that I use every day. This is the one thing I have learned from somebody else. When I was young, my parents taught me how to be polite and use manners. This skill that I learned from my parents has helped me so much in my lifetime especially when being a guest or speaking to an adult. My motto, work hard and stay strong, applies to this because you can do both those things well with manners, especially if you need help, and can use manners to ask for help. I used the colors orange, yellow, and blue. Blue symbolizes integrity which I possess with the ability to use manners. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Aztec Human Sacrifices Essay The Aztec civilization was a very complex society that was feared and known well for their various gory sacrifices done to please their many gods in their polytheistic religion. The much feared civilization began by the exile of one of the two Toltec leaders, which lead to the decline of the Toltec state that was later replaced by Mexica, or the Aztecs. According to the Aztecs, the land chosen to build their main city was chosen by the portrayal of an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its mouth. Through military might, the Aztecs managed to become the most powerful civilization in the mid fourteenth century. They maintained their power through military might and the fear they caused other civilizations because of the human ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The selfless act the gods committed led to one of the major reasons for human sacrifices which was that since the gods gave up their own life for the creation of the new world, that the Aztecs had to somehow respect and honor their action. They did this by creating an eighteen month calendar, which dedicated each month to a certain god. The Aztecs used scared and solar calendars to tell time and when all the possible combinations had been used, usually every fifty two years, the Aztecs would go through a twelve day period before the cycle started again (Benson 506). There were many different methods the Aztecs used to sacrifice their victims but most sacrifices centered on the method of heart extraction. The victims were, thrust onto the stone, where a temple priest cut through their chest wall with a ritual flint knife, and the heart was, [offered] to the sun for vitality and nourishment, ( Aztec Human Sacrifices ). There was also the act of burning the victim alive in the sacrificial fire but before they reached death they were taken out and their heart would be taken out (Callery 33). Victims were not the only ones that were sacrificed; priests also conducted a method of sacrifice called bloodletting. The priest would begin by punctuating his tongue or any other body part and then proceeding to letting blood flow out ( Aztec Human Sacrifices ). A torture method of the Aztecs that might be ... • 5. A Narrative Of Me And You Written By Niccolo Ammaniti s... A narrative bears many similarities to a snowflake. All snowflakes are composed of exactly the same material, but when scrutinized, no two are the same. The same can be said about two narratives which may contain the same story but the meaning can change when recounted by different narrators. The difference in narratives can be observed in the novel and film adaptation of Me and You written by Niccolò Ammaniti s and directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. All stories contain a mixture of constituent and supplementary events. The overall constituent events that must be present in Me and You are that Lorenzo must first lie about leaving for a week long ski trip, then he must hide in a cellar, after which Olivia rest with her brother until the week ends. Both Ammaniti and Bertolucci insert supplementary events that although do not move the story forward or directly affect the constituent events, add meaning to their perspective of the story. The supplementary event which Ammaniti attaches to his narrative occurs when he writes the scene about Lorenzo and his mother were stuck in a traffic jam on the Corso Vittorio. On the other hand, Bertolucci incorporates the scene where Oliva invites a friend to the cellar to further strengthen his vision for his narrative. Meanwhile Ammaniti crafts his narrative to present the reader with Italy s imperfections and perfections, Bertolucci limits the audience s knowledge of the Italy outside of Lorenzo s bunker to bring us to a closer meaning of ... • 6. The Day With The Patients Of Regent Care On February 5, 2016, I had the privilege to spend the day with the patients of Regent Care. I was accompanied by my classmates from the Communication Disorders program. As I walked into the facilities cafeteria we gathered around the round tables. As we waited for instructions our professor gave us an overview of what we were expected to do. There were big squared plastic bins that were filled with different kinds of supplies. As we assisted our peers get the supplies out of the bin we began to separate and organize the supplies by activities. We began by cleaning the round tables with water. After they were dry we began setting up the different stations. There were about five activities which included getting their nails done, decorating a picture frame, decorating a bag, painting figures as arts and crafts and bowling. There was an elderly woman sitting by herself in one of the round tables looking at us set up the activities. I approached her by asking her if she wanted to decorate a bag. She looked at me with a smile and said, si, claro con gusto. I opened the package of fabric painted and lined up the paint in front of her where she was able to reach all five colors. As I called out each color she told me her favorite color was green. I asked what she wanted to write or draw on the bag, but she replied by saying, yo no se. Yo no puedo pensar. • 7. Gordon Brown s Silent No More, Questions And Answers Silent No More Research Paper Scotland held its independence referendum on September 18th, 2014. The Scottish Nationalist Party wanted to hold this vote in order to give the people of Scotland a say in whether or not their country would stay in the UK. In his speech, Silent No More , Gordon Brown urges his audience to have the confidence in saying no to Scotland s independence. Since the Act of Union in 1707, Scotland has been a part of the UK. Until 1997, all important decisions regarding Scotland and the rest of the UK were made by the Westminster Parliament in London. However, Scotland has always maintained its own education system, law and justice system, church, and sports teams (the Guardian). In 1979, a referendum was held ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He begins with saying that the vote is not about whether or not Scotland is nation; we are, yesterday, today, and tomorrow. ( Silent No More ). Brown says this in order to exaggerate the fact that Scotland has always been its own standing nation and the vote will not change anything. This pushes patriotic audience members to vote no since Brown has confirmed that Scotland is already an independent nation. Gordon Brown repeats the phrase It s not about to clarify to the people who are not sure which side to vote on that either way the vote will not change any aspects of Scotland that he mentions. He then changes the pattern to say that the vote is about whether [they] want to break and sever every link between Scotland and the UK. This powerful line both defines what he believes independence will do to the union as well as delivering that statement using negative language. To conclude this section of the speech, Brown suggests that his audience tell the undecided, the waverers, [and] those not sure how to vote what Scotland and the UK have achieved together. Brown s intention is to unite and widen his audience of people who believe voting for independence is the wrong ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Conservation of Linear Momentum Name Institution Table of contents Objective 2 Results and Graphs 2 Discussion 3 Summary and Conclusion 3 References 4 Data Sheet 4 Sample Calculations 6 Conservation of Linear Momentum Objective The primary goal of this experiment was to study the force that a jet generates on hemispherical, flat, and conical surfaces. Further, the experiment exposed students to the concept of linear momentum conservation by observing forces that a jet of water exerts on objects with different shapes. Results and Graphs Figure 1: Forces Acting on the x and y axis As can be seen, the forces that act on the x direction are caused by pressure at sections 1 and 2. Similarly, an expression that relates the conservation of linear momentum in the Y direction can be developed. Discussion Although the experiment was successful, some errors occurred during the experiment that made most values to deviate from the expected ones. Generally, both fixed and random errors were observed (Mitchell Worledge, 2015). The random errors, in this case, resulted into statistical fluctuations in the measured data because of the limitations in precision measurement. Additionally, the random errors occurred due to inability to take the same measurements as the expected ones. Furthermore, fixed errors were responsible for reduced inaccuracies in the values obtained (Valiani Caleffi, 2011). However, the best way to minimize random errors is by averaging ... • 10. Essay on Kate Chopin Kate Chopin The Story of an Hour The story The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, written in 1894, is about a woman gaining independence and experiencing a new freedom, due to the death of her husband. The topic of the story was rather scandalous at the end of the 19th century. Women had no control over their property and weren t allowed to request a divorce. Luise Mallard is a young wife (p.78, 3rd paragraph). She immediately feels grief and starts to cry when Richards gives her the news about the death of her husband. But directly after her outburst, the reader can already make out signs about how her feelings will change. In the story are several symbols, showing the approaching of a new life. Through the open window Mrs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That doesn t mean that she didn t lover her husband, she loved him sometimes (p. 78, last paragraph). And she knows that she has to cry again when she ll see him dead at his funeral. But this grief won t hold her back to enjoy the new life that lies ahead of her. She looks forward to the coming years (p. 78, 6th paragraph, end), she even hopes that she will have a long life, so that she can fully enjoy her freedom (p. 79, 3rd paragraph, end). But Mrs. Mallard will never lead such al life because her husband is not dead. When he comes through the door, directly after she realized what a life without her husband means to her, she is shocked. She dies because of her heart trouble, already mentioned at the beginning of the story (p.77, first sentence) and therefore foreshadowing what could happen in the end. The question is, what reason made her heart fail? The doctor says it was joy that kills (p. 79, last sentence) and because of this last statement irony is created. The reader knows more than the characters do because of the change of perspective when Mrs. Mallard goes up to her room. The narrator changes from an authorial narrator to a personal narrator and the reader gets a detailed description of her feelings. This mind style enables us to suspect what the sudden appearance of Mr. Mallard could mean for Luise. It was certainly not joy that Brently Mallard is still alive that killed her. It was rather ... • 11. Be As You Are, By Mike Posner In Mike Posner s song Be As You Are he shows the importance of individuality. As he sings about being different, himself, he shows understanding of the pressures brought upon people who influence individuality or are different. If your friends cannot stand you as yourself, it shows who they really were and they wanted you for a different reason than you wanted. Even if nobody stands with you for individuality, you will always be yourself and that s the best you that you can be. Hence, it is your greatest achievement just to have individuality. First and foremost, having belief in and having individuality can improve mood and emotion control. With individuality and an increased mood, the path to ultimate happiness is revealed. In other words, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In similar terms, you won t have to care about fitting in or if you match and follow perfectly, because it won t matter! As an illustration, in my third and last school, the one I m in now, I was too loud. Now, two years since I came, I ve learned to control it more but it s not always easy. Sometimes, I slip up but it s not uncommon for someone to slip up once, right? Anyways, I m not scared to be loud and I have no insecurities about my voice or anything. Although some believe following someone else is best, this is a fallacy. Individuality is best because you know who you are. Don t care about what others think, it s what you think that matters the most. Being free to care about yourself is better than caring about what others think and following them. When everyone is gone the only one there is you. Who will control you then? You will control yourself so it s best to do that from the start than to follow others for no reason. In conclusion, individuality is best. With an increased mood, leadership, and decrease in insecurities, individuality is better than following others just to hit a brick wall or have opposite and harmful effects. • 12. Causes Of Neururodevelopmental Disorders Based on the fact that ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, there have been multiple studies researching the neuroanatomical abnormalities found in ASD individuals. There have been a number of those abnormalities associated with ASD (Donovan Basson, 2017). In the most recent study, Donovan Basson, found the frontal cortex and the amygdala of an ASD individual s brain during the early postnatal period has a tendency to overgrow followed by normalization, or even decrease, in volume and cellularity, when compared to neurotypical individuals (2017). They described the function of the frontal cortex of the brain to be in charge of executive functions (e.g., higher order cognitive processing planning, decision making, working memory, ... From the results of the study, the investigators found that the participants with ASD showed lower correct response rates for recognizing affect via emotional words and facial emoticons. They also found that the part of the brain, called the fusiform gyrus, in the participants with ASD had a greater activation rate during emotional word tasks when compared to their typically developing peers. Interestingly, the investigators found that the fusiform gyrus of the participants with ASD had less of an activation response to facial emoticons when compared to their typically developing peers (Han et al., 2014). Studies have also shown that the difficulty that individuals with ASD have with the acquisition and understanding of humor is the effect of their deficits in theory of mind (ToM) (Semrud Clikeman Glass, 2008; Jaegher, 2013; Samson, 2013; Whyte, Nelson, Scherf, 2014; Wu et al., 2014). Theory of mind can be defined as the ability to understand and assign beliefs, traits, and emotions to oneself and others, in other words the ability to put oneself in another s shoes (Semrud Clikeman Glass, 2008; Samson, 2014; Wu et al., 2014). • 13. Equality In Harrison Bergeron In his story Harrison Bergeron, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. ( 1961) proves that not all of mankind can be equal. Vonnegut sets his story in 2081, where everyone is equal. No one is smarter, more talented, stronger, or better looking. The government in his story controlled everyone and how they acted and thought with machines. Those who were smarter had a mental handicap radio s in their ear that made a noise every so often throwing them off the train of thought. The stronger ones had to carry around weight at all times, to make them equal to the weak. Those who were beautiful had to wear mask, or were made to look less beautiful. All competition was gone. However, Vonnegut shows that trying to control everyone, so all are equal is impossible, and can lead to disastrous things. In the story, Harrison Bergeron was arrested for suspicion of overthrowing the government. He escaped jail and on the TV episode of the ballerinas, people watched him take over. He allowed himself and others to take off the equipment controlling them and everyone became an individual again. Until, the leader came in and killed Harrison and the beautiful ballerina as they were dancing. Things became equal again, but not perfect. Vonnegut successfully makes point, that trying to make a perfect world, where all things are equal, is impossible and will cause trouble. In the 1960 s equal rights were a big goal to achieve. It was a process requiring considerable effort and time. Though tedious, the RCA process helped me to stay focused, analyze in depth information about the studies, and select most relevant articles that would be beneficial in answering the PICOT question and appropriate for my evidence based practice(EBP) proposal. During the dialogue between Wild Bob and Billy it is important to note the act of turn taking. As Billy withholds participation, Bob is forced to speak again, meaning that turn taking is not fulfilled here. This gives the impression that Billy is a weak character who isn t really aware of the situation and appears to have little knowledge about the topic. Billy couldn t remember the outfit he was from (Vonnegut 1969: 55). As Bob speaks for longer, and has a lot more turns in the conversation than Billy it shows that he in charge of the soldiers and his status is evident through this conversation. Fog computing can also be called as edge computing, is a distributed computing infrastructure in nature, for smart devices like mobile phones the application services should be maintained near the end user side but the services are handled at remote data server i.e. in cloud. Our aim is to reduce the amount of storage required, the time required in data processing and data analysis and the propagation time in cloud computing. Thus by handling data at network edge latency can be reduced and efficiency can be improved. The New World represented potential and freedoms that were unattainable in England. The New England settlers overcame adversities and created challenges that would go on to change the course of history. When they first arrived, their inexperience was shown through the death of nearly half their colony in the first year. The introduction of the Wampanoag tribe to the New England colony was such a crucial component to their survival and a primary reason they were able to sustain and even increase their population. The New England colony proved to be successful in establishing a necessary relationship with the Wampanoag, thriving through their protestant work ethic, and ultimately creating a stable settlement; however, they failed when it came to maintaining that stable relationship with the Wampanoag, their lack of experience in the New World, and the hypocritical tendencies of their actions. When the Pilgrims first arrived, they were not hesitant about claiming land and getting right to work. Their protestant work ethic ensured that they worked hard because there was a high moral obligation to fulfill ones duty in worldly affairs. For example, a spike in a frequency known to be used by the enemy, indicating a potential target for electronic attack, or a sudden increase in noise on friendly systems which could indicate jamming by an adversary. The required operational tempo to effectively jam the SINCGARS radio is much higher than operational tempo required to frequency hop. This can be explained by looking at the bandwidth cost for the hopped radio and the swept jammer. The radio hops 111 times per second, with each hop being a distinct channel, but has 2320 channels to choose from. Sepsis is a complex condition that results from an infectious process that represents the body s response to infection and involves systemic inflammatory and cellular events that result in altered circulation and coagulation, endothelial dysfunction and impaired tissue perfusion (Kleinpell, 2005). (2001): Early hemodynamic assessment on the basis of physical findings, vital signs, central venous pressure, and urinary output fails to detect persistent global tissue hypoxia. A more definitive resuscitation strategy involves goal oriented manipulation of cardiac preload, afterload, and contractility to achieve a balance between systemic oxygen delivery and oxygen demand. End points used to confirm the achievement of such a balance (hereafter called resuscitation end points) include normalized values for mixed venous oxygen saturation, arterial lactate concentration, base deficit, and pH. Mixed venous oxygen saturation has been shown to be a surrogate for the cardiac index as a target for hemodynamic therapy. In cases in which the insertion of a pulmonary artery catheter is impractical, venous oxygen saturation can be measured in the central circulation (p. 1368). • 30. Evolution Of The Baseball Bat The evolution of the baseball bat dates back to when baseball was a growing sport. The first wood bats cannot be compared with today s wood bats, and the BESR bats of the past cannot be compared with the modern BBCOR bats. The first wood baseball bats were considered sticks because they did not have a lot of pop, which is how hard the ball bounces off of the bat. As the wood bat progressed, the ball began to fly farther and travel faster. This change in wood baseball bats can be related to the change in metal bats. When metal bats were first introduced, they were considered inferior to wood bats until the new and improved BESR bats were introduced. These bats had more pop than ever before, and were considered dangerous. Because of this danger, the BBCOR bats had to be introduced in 2011. Because of the major advances in technology, bat manufacturers are able to tune the bats to the BBCOR certifiable level. The introduction of BBCOR bats into college and high school baseball has moved the game in a positive direction by making baseball more realistic, creating a safer game, and making it easier to project a player s future. This one of a kind memory is very impressive, but only within a very narrow area. The skills often associated with savant syndrome are the ability to play the piano beautifully, meaning complex pieces one would need months to learn by ear alone , (Howe 955). Being able to give a day of the week from any past or future date, and solving complex math problems extremely fast are also common feats performed by savants. Another interesting skill some savants possess is the perfect appreciation of time without the knowledge of a clock. (Howe 956) One example of a fictional savant is Forrest Gump, played by Tom Hanks. Forrest was born with an IQ of seventy five, witch is lower than the average student able to go to public school. Forrest had problems learning to read, walking properly, and even learning his left from right. Only after having his mother pull some strings was he able to go to a normal public school. • 34. Analysis Of Marie De FranceBy Marie De France Marie de France begins her story by describing Bisclavret, her main character, as well as defining what a werewolf is: a ferocious beast which, when possessed by this madness, devours men, causes great damage and dwells in vast forests (de France, 68). She wants to relate the two by allowing the reader to decide what she means by the descriptions and why she would correlate them. De France does a little play and twists the monsters throughout her story. Being a werewolf, Bisclavret may start out as a monster without; and, at first, his wife seems to be so beautiful and innocent, but there lied a monster within her. Later in the story, Bisclavret is no more than a human being, and his wife s monstrousness shows from within and she transforms into a monster without. The themes gathered from this story are the relationship between love and suffering, justice, and the wife who may be at first likable, but then changes the way that monsters are viewed. In order to modify the stereotypes of what a monster is, de France made Bisclavret, a werewolf, the good guy, and his beautiful wife, an unforeseen bad guy. The wife in the story Bisclavret portrays a trustworthy, loving wife, until she reacts quite differently to him being honest with whom he really is. Her character is the very thing, which makes the reader reconsider the definition of a monster and the truth about monsters within. Twenty million years ago, the Atlantic and Pacific oceans flowed freely between North and South America because there was no land barrier between them, which meant that the salinity of the oceans were similar. This meant that warm water vapor wasn t being carried up to the North Atlantic, like happens today. Barry Goldwater was his competitor, and while Johnson had the JFK assassination on his side, it was Goldwater s crazy ideas about the Cold War that really made him so undesirable among the people. An important piece of all this information is that the Democrats won the votes of the Solid South during that election, which previously had been dependably Republican states. Chronicle of a Death Foretold, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez Works Cited Not Included Chronicle of a Death Foretold, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, is a story that brings one to question the code of honor that exists in the Columbian town. Marquez paints a picture that shows how societal values, such as honor, have become more important than the inherent good of human life. The Vicario brothers belief that their sister was done wrong was brought upon by this honor, along with racial and social tension. The dangerous path of both honor and religious faith caused Santiago s untimely death. Before God and before men, Pablo Vicario said. It was a matter of honor (Marquez 56). If the medieval idea that death brings honor is true, then it is safe to say Santiago Nasar died without honor for he did not know the reason for his death was. The Vicarios were poor Hispanics and the Nasars were rich Arabs, so social and racial tension was clear. In the town though, honor is not defined by race or color. The Vicario brothers are cousins to Santiago, yet when Santiago died the Arab families were perplexed and sadâ?¦but none harbored the ideas of vengeance (94). After they killed Santiago, the brothers went to the parish house, not for repentance, but because they would be safe from the Arabs (91) and were comforted by the honor of having done their duty, and the only thing that worried them was the persistence of the smell [of death] (91).
