The Girl The World Forgot Essay
She stood there as the world passed her by. Ever since she came into the world, it has turned its back
to her. Shunned her and continued on their way, without a second glance. She stood in the background
of life, watching the forgotten beauties that everyone had forgotten, like her. Even now she leaned up
against a tall oak tree that stretched out across the sky, long limps twisting together and bright green
leaves scattered about. The old tree had been there for a long time, and yet everyone that passed by
was too busy to take in the grandness of what surrounded them. However, every flower that pressed
through the cracks of the broken sidewalk, every bird that flew across the sky, every creature that
walked by her she would stand in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even still she would give them a soft smile, even though she knew that they weren t paying attention
to her. Time swirled together and she was unable to tell how long she had been waiting and yet she
still kept on waiting. She pushed back her long hair behind her ears as she titled her head to the side
when she heard a male voice, but frowned when she saw a young high school kid come around the
corner calling for his friends, who were a few feet ahead of him. It wasn t him. She sighed, he was
late. Of course he was always late; it was one of the few things that she loved about him. His world
was perfect to those who saw him, and he was very old fashioned, and yet for some reason her heart
would began to pound when he would be several minutes late and then profusely apologize to her.
Seeing him not put together and be clumsy around her made her feel special. As the memories faded
away she smiled as she titled her head up to the sky and closed her eyes. She remembered now, why
she kept going on in this world. The beauty of this world captivated her and made her feel not so
alone, but he had given her the strength to put her foot forward and to keep moving in this thing that
they call life. And that is why she was waiting; she was waiting for him to come to her. She had
always been waiting for him. He always seemed to be off in his own little world, but all she could was

Third Of May 1808 Essay
Francisco Goya s painting titled The Third of May 1808 represents its intended message about war.
The Third of May 1808 was composed during the era of romanticism in 1814. In this work, Goya
Depicts a gruesome scene during the spanish uprising at the beginning of the peninsula war. This piece
was completed in 1814, but was lost and damaged in World War 2. It has since been found and is
located in Madrid, Spain. The Third of May 1808 is a traditional oil on canvas piece. This painting
was meant to commemorate those who stood up and fought against the French during the uprising.
The painting was representing the execution of Spanish rebels by French soldiers commanded by
Napoleon Bonaparte. This particular painting by Goya is not his first message ... Show more content

The image of a stigma on the focus of the piece can be seen. Just as jesus was nailed to the cross, this
man bears his wound. This stood for he men, women, and children who will die today will be
remembered in the hearts of the spanish who would go to fight the French for the oncoming years. The
stigma in the man s hand is the most important part of the painting. In the group of men about to be
executed, there is a friar praying before his death.
Illumination is used almost exclusively in this piece. In the past, Illumination techniques have
portrayed the presence of God or some sort of divine presence. In Goya s painting there is no religious
connotation. There is more of an opposing connotation. The light is used to kill, not heal. The viewer s
eyes are carried by the outlines of the lantern. The lights of the lantern carry you to the dead body of a
man. With The Third of May 1808 Goya displayed the disasters of war with a very fitting art style.
Illumination was used well to bring the focal point of the piece to the hopeless men ready to

The Role Of Large Corporations Under Repressive Regime
What is the role of large corporations under repressive regime? Do they engage in criminal activities?
If yes, how should they be included in a process of transitional justice? The purpose of this work is to
establish the links between the business world and transitional justice mechanisms. My purpose is
more specifically to link the potential crimes perpetrated by corporations and the transitional justice
mechanisms. This work does not link the transitional justice field to a defined field of research.
Corporate responsibility or accountability is a concept coming from law and business literature. For
the United Nations, transitional justice is the full range of processes and mechanisms associated with a
society s attempt to come to terms with a legacy of large scale past abuses, in order to ensure
accountability, serve justice and achieve reconciliation. The vast majority of the literature discussing
transitional justice focuses on individuals or states, not collective organizations. Mechanisms of
transitional justice are fourfold and include: a justice process, a reparation process, a truth process and
a stabilization process. All these 4 processes are studied as either applying to individuals or state.
However, in many cases the responsibility of individuals is related to the collective responsibility of a
group or an organization other than the state. The objective of this work is to try to connect the role of
businesses and transitional justice mechanisms. The

My Experience As An Outsider
When people are growing up, being normal was the way to be cool. Everyone wants to be like
everybody else and that s the way it goes. What children and many adults still don t understand is that
being different and having diversity is a good thing. It is ok to be different, especially in today s
society. Being able to acknowledge that diversity and disability in everyday life and seeing the good in
it will help bring together our society. For my next three paragraphs i m going to discuss what it was
like to be an outsider, when I experienced diversity and an experience I have had with disability When
I was thinking about what I wanted to write about my experience as an outsider, all that came to my

I m scared to start over so maybe that s why I am not going out of my way to make new friends. I tell
myself that I should just focus on school, but I know it s my anxiety telling me that I won t be

knew once i talked about it, I could start making progress to being happy st this school. I don t really
understand why people don t seem to like but I think it s just because they don t know me yet. Ive
realized that friends aren t just going to fall into my lap and I ve already started to sign up for a few
clubs so hopefully some good will come from it. I m from cape cod and were definitely not know for
our diversity so whenever I go into an environment with lots of diversity I instantly notice it. For my

my first time going and It was more amazing than I could ever imagine. My favorite place we visited

simple beauty of the beach and all it has to offer. Every shop had its own personality and the stories
behind the life of each owner made it even more interesting. My favorite shop was Egyptian themed

Authority in the Public Services
Authority in the public services
Authority means the right or power to enforce rules or give orders. To do this they need legislations to
enforce their laws, to function properly the uniformed pubic services need to have legislations.
The extent of authority relates to the limit of control held by an individual or organisation. The limit of
control is governed by the job description of the role, as well as the jurisdiction, with authority coming
either from statute or company policy.
An example would be Her Majesty s Chief Inspector of Prisons who has the authority under the
Ministry of Justice to inspect and report to the Government on the treatment and conditions for all
prisoners in England and Wales. The authority of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
* Referent power we do what we are asked because we can identify with the source of influence; we
may be attracted to them or respect them.
Position
When we talk about someone being in a position of authority we usually mean that they hold a certain
rank or status within society or within an organisation such as the public services. There are several
ways in which a person could find himself or herself in a position of authority. For example, a priest
has the authority of the church while a mother or father has parental authority over children. In the
uniformed public services, positions of authority come with promotion. An officer may be promoted
because of certain achievements and special attributes, such as experience in the service, good
character, knowledge of the job, dedication, self discipline and the respect of one s colleagues. If you
join the uniformed public services and are placed in a position of authority, you may lawfully
command team members, who recognise your authority and their duty to obey those legitimate
commands. When authority is legitimate, there is no need to influence or use power. Indeed, if a senior
officer were unable to gain the respect of a team member by command alone, then there would be no
recognisable authority.
For someone to be placed in a position of authority they should have power and

Electric Vehicles Vs Hybrid Vehicles
My recommendation report will be focusing on the Electric vehicles versus Hybrid vehicles by
keeping in view two criterions. Problem The use of vehicles has solved many of our problems and has
facilitated the human kind in many aspects starting from transportation purposes to the time efficiency.
If we just be looking at the positive side of the vehicles then the negative aspects of the use of vehicles
will be hidden from us. (Hooftman, Oliveira, Messagie, Coosemans, Mierlo, 2016)The two important
aspects that bring negativity in the selection of the vehicles are its effects on environment and also its
costs as compared to the benefits it is giving. The paper will select two types of vehicles and will
analyze them on the basis of environment concerns and cost/benefit analysis to provide a better
solution to select which product is the best. The basic problem which is arising is that which product is
most effective to be used which will satisfy both the criteria selected for the analysis. The two criteria
selected are actually the 2 most important aspects of selecting any vehicle. Scope The paper compares
two vehicles Electric Vehicles and Hybrid Vehicles on the following two criteria; 1. Environmental
Concerns 2. Cost/Benefit Analysis The above mentioned 2 criteria will be used to make a comparison
and analysis of report of the two vehicles to judge their effectiveness and efficiencies in both the
criteria. Discussion Environmental Concerns With the latest advancement in

Harry Quebert Affair Essay
Harry Quebert is a one hit wonder, in terms of novel writing. He made his fame through the book, The
Origin of Evil. Yet, thirty three years later, Quebert s student Marcus Goldman discovers it is a lie:
Harry Quebert didn t write the book. Someone named Luther Caleb did. But, more than this, the book
is about an affair between Mr. Quebert and a fifteen year old girl named Nola Kellergan. On August
30, 1975, Nola disappeared. Now, thirty three years later, the body is found, and Mr. Quebert is
blamed. Young, upstart author and student of Mr. Quebert, Marcus Goldman shows up on the scene to
free Mr. Quebert by leading an investigation and publishing a book. The more he digs, the worse
things seem. Nola was buried with a copy of The Origin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For examples, on pages 523 525, Mr. Goldman discovers he incorrectly depicted Nola s situation with
her mother. On page 536, Marcus Goldman discovers that he ruined David Kellergan s (Nola s father)
life, and earlier on, Mr. Goldman discovers that he had ruined Harry Quebert s life. This helps bring
out the theme that it is not smart to jump to conclusions because they can hurt people very much.
The development of Mr. Goldman from a man needing a story to a man afraid of his story shows that
people shouldn t jump to conclusions. The setting change from Somerset, New Hampshire to New
York City, New York and back relates to this theme by showing that, due to mistakes, Marcus
Goldman has forced a town into ruins. The development of the plot leads back to the theme mistakes

Animal Cruelty in Slaughter Houses Essay
Draft 2
What are currently the poor conditions for animals in the American slaughterhouses, what are the
causes of these conditions, and what are the best methods for preventing slaughterhouse cruelty?
The conditions for animals in modern slaughterhouses are unsanitary and violent. The lack of rules
and regulations cause animals to be treated poorly because this industry is focused on mass production
and profit rather than finding a more humane alternative to run the meat packing business. The most
effective method to stop this cruelty is to learn about where meat comes from, start supporting the
organic and family farms which will ultimately lead to the reducing the amount of animals that have to
suffer.
Millions of animals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After, another belt takes them to where a worker cuts their throat and allows them to bleed out. Some
animals are hung up side down by their back legs and move through the processing line where their
necks will be cut one by one (Dugan). Sometimes one of these methods will not work and the animal
will be disassembled while still conscious.
For most humans, especially for those in modern urban and suburban communities, the most direct
form or contact with non human animals is at meal time: we eat them. This simple fact is the key to
what each one of us can do about changing these attitudes. The use and abuse of animals raised for
food far exceeds, in sheer numbers of animals affected, any other kind of mistreatment (Coats). The
most effective method to stop this cruelty is to learn about where the meat comes from, by supporting
the organic and family farms which will ultimately lead to the reducing the amount of animals that
have to suffer (PETA). More than 95 percent of animal abuse in America occurs in the meat packing
industry (Harper Low). Animals suffer an unimaginable amount, they are raised to be killed, then
bought and then consumed. In order to help fight back against the abuse, there needs to be a cut back
on the amount of meat or poultry that is consumed. Seriously consider the option of becoming a
vegetarian; by not eating meat, you completely stop supporting animal

The Crunch By Charles Bukowski
In the poem, The Crunch by Charles Bukowski, it talks about some of the major topics that are
important to us in this world. The poem explains how some people can feel insecure about themselves.
People believe they need to look perfect to succeed in life. The poem says the world has a sense of
loneliness and how people are not the same anymore. Charles Bukowski explains the many problems
that people are having, however it seems it is all mental. Charles Bukowski s work displays how the
people are living with a lack of happiness. People are just not being nice to people, no matter who you
are. People just are not good to each other one on one. The rich are not good to the rich the poor are
not good to the poor. By treating people poorly,

Analysis Of The Film American History X
Vandalism, murder, and rape are only a taste of the violence presented within the film American
HIstory X (Tony Kaye). In his work, Kaye explores the origins of racism through the minds of Derek
(Edward Norton) and his brother, Danny (Edward Furlong); however, the film tells the story of far
more than these two brothers. It tells the story of all those who have ever overcame their prejudice
feelings through the process of introspection and their proximity to those they are prejudice towards.
While the situations and character transformations presented within Tony Kaye s film are too radical
and fast paced, it generates a true insight to the way of thinking that leads towards racism as well as
how some may overcome this weakness of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kaye s creation presents a list of unreal situations. As the audience catches up with Danny years after
he witnesses his brother killing two black men, we find him in the principal s office for submitting a
glowing review of Hitler s book Mein Kampf. If someone were foolish enough to submit a review of
Mein Kampf for their high school English paper, they are foolish enough to make a mistake worthy of
expulsion far before they are at the grade level to write essays over books. To continue with these
coincidences, it is odd that the moment Danny changes his character and begins to accept people of
color as people he is shot by a person of color. This coincidence has clearly been used to assist
Hollywood as it attempts to tell its audience that racism will lead to a life of misery or even no life at
all. While Hollywood may be correct in this regard, using a coincidence to present this idea is
academically unacceptable. While these problems are real, they are all relatively small and are
overshadowed by one large imperfection.
Kaye s film, while a true work of art, has one fatal flaw, change cannot occur at the same pace shown
within Danny s transformation, especially when taking his environment into consideration. Change
takes time, especially when dealing with a deep seated prejudice such as racism. From the start of the
film, we see that Danny has had the ideology of racism ingrained into him so much that he looks at
Derek with pride, not in despite of his actions,

The coastal environment I have decided to talk about today is Ningaloo Reef. The reef is on the
remote western coast of Australia, it includes one of the longest nearshore reefs in the world.
Temperate and tropical currents converge in the Ningaloo region resulting in highly diverse marine
life including spectacular coral reefs, abundant fishes and species with special conservation
significance such as turtles, whale sharks, dugongs, whales and dolphins.

The reefs latitude ranges from 21°42 14 S 24° 1 52 S (one of the highest for reefs) and the longitude is

the reef is enclosed within the Ningaloo Marine Park, listed on the World Heritage List in 1987.

Unit 2 Research Essay
24 October 2016 The Renaissance painter, sculptor, and poet Michelangelo is famous not only for his
painting of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or his sculpture of the Biblical King David, but he also
created another Biblical figure, the Hebrew Prophet Moses. The sculpture was commissioned by Pope
Julius II, in an attempt to mirror his larger than life reputation and personality. Michelangelo Moses
along with other pieces of sculpture and artwork were to be enshrined in the Pope s planned resting
place, with the Moses statue placed opposite of another figure of Saint Paul. However, it would never
come to be, as the Moses sculpture would not be completed until more than 30 years after Pope Julius
death in 1513. Pope Julius II had commissioned Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel as well as
build his entire tomb, but the chapel frescos occupied all of the painter s time (Michelangelo
Gallery.com). However, once the Sistine Chapel frescos were finally completed Michelangelo
immediately resumed his work on Moses, completing it in 1545. This sculpture marks a significant
innovation, combining sculpturing and architecture for the first time in his career. Completed out of
nothing but marble, the Moses became one of Michelangelo s crowning achievements along with the
Sistine Chapel frescos and his sculpture of David. It was placed on the second tier of Pope Julius II s
tomb which is housed in the church of San

Impacts Of The Dambusters
The Dambusters have been immortalised in World War Two folklore as a result of their attack on the
dams of the Ruhr. As part of the Allies bombing campaign against Germany during the war, the
Dambusters wa an elite Lancaster bomber unit and the raid was led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson
VC. How much impact the Dambusters raid had is still debated but what cannot be denied is the
bravery of the men involved in the raid and the unique contribution made by Dr.Barnes Wallis who
developed the unique bouncing bomb that was used on the raid. If the raid did not have a long term
impact, it did have enormous propaganda value for the Allies. dambus1 Dr Barnes Wallis Barnes
Wallis was an employee of the Vickers Aircraft Company. In March 1941, he completed a piece of
work entitled A note on the method of attacking the Axis powers. Wallis had envisaged the Allies
using a huge bomb against the Germans ten tons in weight so that any building/object was vulnerable
to an aerial attack even if it was built underground. This fifty page piece of work stated that the Allies
had to develop a new form of bombing if massive concrete structures were to be destroyed. He wanted
much larger bombs built so that the area surrounding where the bombs were dropped would be so

Discussing the Concepts 1. What is marketing and what is its primary goal? * One definition of
marketing is, a social and managerial process by which individuals and organizations obtain what they
need and want through creating and exchanging value with others. * A much simpler definition would

capture from customers.
2. Compare and contrast customer needs, wants and demands. Describe the need versus the want for

Job Consolidation Is A Great Idea For Suncoast Hotel
We at White Board Consulting believe that job consolidation is a great idea for SunCoast Hotel (SCH)
to help solve their current scheduling problems and help management transition during the expansion.
Further, this job consolidation approach can help prevent problems that might arise in the future.
Having a Guest Service Staff (GSS) position will allow these employees to be more efficient in their
day to day operations since they will be able to function within in each department of the hotel. Idle
time for employees will also be reduced because instead of just being confined to only completing
tasks one department, the GSS is will be able multitask in different department. Management will also
have a flexibility of moving employees from department to department without having to use time and
labor retain employees.
Having a Guest Service Staff might also be a beneficial position in the long run for the SunCoast
Hotel. Currently there is is a 35 percent average turnover rate for hotel employees; 10 percent is
through natural attrition. If employees are being used more efficiently and given a wide range of task
to complete, WB consulting believes that this turnover rate will decrease due to a positive increase in
affective commitment. Engaging the employees more and setting up a healthy relationship with
management, we believe, will have a very strong positive impact for job satisfaction. Employees will
see the big picture and see how their work directly effects that,

Unfortunately this marriage cost Moll Flanders money and hence she didn t marry well. She enjoyed it
though, partly because it involved innocent deception. Now Moll is seeking her third marriage. She
proceeds with this by being influenced by her personal experiences so far. Being deceived by her first
love, then deceiving herself about her second husband, she tried her hand at match making. Moll
helped her friend find her Sea Captain through deception. Then Moll s friend sees it is only just to deal
with men in their own way; to Deceive the Deceiver (2011 p65). Interestingly, the man whom Moll
sets out to deceive isn t a deceptive or manipulative man. Both women played the game very well.
Moll Flanders got her man without much difficulty. She let him profess his love for her and let him
believe she was rich. Moll truly liked and respected her suitor but thought it was criminal to deceive
him. So once she was married, Moll took the opportunity to bring him that little stock she had (2011
p69), and he was satisfied that he got the wife he loves and believed Moll didn t deceive him.
Nevertheless, since he expected more money from his wife and was earning less from his plantations,
he started to talk about taking Moll to Virginia. She agreed. This was all in aid of Moll deceiving her
husband by letting him think she had no money and wouldn t be disappointed when she showed him
how much she really had. Throughout this period of time,

to our heads. One will be plugged in for two years at a time but while one is attached, the experiences
are going to seem like they are actually happening. He takes this machine to disprove the hedonism
view that says consciously experience pleasure is the most important thing to living a good life. In his
opinion he would not plug in because while one is in the machine, one cannot do certain things, be a
certain person or come in contact with reality. I had never really thought about the option of
experiencing anything I wanted versus living a normal life before, but after reading The Experience
Machine by Nozick, I would pick living in a normal life because even though experiencing anything I
wanted would cause as much pleasure as possible, it limits one to things that are important to human
life such as being able to physically perform or experience things and having an impact in society
The experience machine makes one feel like you are actually performing or experiencing the things
one is doing while plugged in but in reality, as Nozick described, you are floating in a tank with

Nancy Mairs s Passage In The Passage Of Nancy Mair
In the passage, Nancy Mairs presents herself as an empowered, intelligent, and strong cripple. The
first line is I am a cripple which is pretty straightforward, and the matter of fact tone that it is stated in
stays pretty consistent throughout the entire passage. Mairs upfront attitude from the start convinces
the reader that she is unafraid to identify herself however she wants. Later she states that she refuses to
pretend that the only differences between you and me are the various ordinary ones that distinguish
any one person from another . She is realistic to a point that she occasionally seems cynical, but
deeper analysis of the text reveals that that is untrue. Throughout the entire passage, Mairs establishes
that she is extremely intelligent. She uses a colorful vocabulary (semantic, euphemism, calamitous)
and complex sentences. Mairs also makes reference to famous authors and their work. Mairs says my
God is not a
Handicapper General, which alludes to Harrison Bergeron, a short story by Kurt Vonnegut, as well as
a 10th century gospel piece in line 18. She establishes her intelligence in order to prove to the reader
that she is simply crippled and not disabled, which suggests any incapacity physical or mental . It is
clear that Mairs has no mental incapacity, and she makes this very clear purposefully. Nancy chooses
to use the word crippled because other words aren t as straightforward and precise, and as a lover of
words she likes the conciseness of the word

Humor And Looking For Comedy In The Muslim World
I think humor is important for communication because it conveys another message and idea altogether.
We need to study something like humor in order to understand why we laugh and what kind of ideas
make us laugh. In the case of the movie Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World , I learned that
humor can create a good or bad connection between countries and not just its people. Humor is
subjective because of the audience it communicates to; as a result, not everyone may understand a
certain reference when it comes to farce, comedy or jokes that are being discussed. Humor is
important when it comes to communicating an idea through ads, propaganda and even social media
like Twitter (Holton and Lewis 1).
In the film, Albert Brooks, is tasked by the American government to determine what makes the
Muslim people laugh. At first, he thinks that the task is actually achievable based on what he is told by
the government personnel in the meeting he attends at the start of the movie. But throughout the whole
film, he realizes that the task is more daunting than expected. Despite the help that he receives through
the US government in completing his diplomatic mission, he doesn t succeed. A possible reason for
this could be how he isn t able to communicate his humor to his audience. Albert didn t fully
understand that his goal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

important way of maintaining a cultural identity and coping with the stresses of being a cultural

Math Knot Theory and Celtic Knots
l Ve always had an interest in Celtic culture. I love the traditional clothing and dancing, but my
favorite part has always been the symbolism and beauty of Celtic Knots. I wondered where the knots
originated and how they were created so symmetrically, which led me to the mathematical study of
knot theory. So my question now is, How has the knot theory in mathematics influenced and shaped
the tradition of Celtic Knots? Knots in the real world are easy to define and see, such as tying a
shoelace or a rope, but knots in the mathematical world are a bit different. These knots are joined at
the end, making them one continuous line, unable to be pulled apart or untied. They can be described
in mathematical terms as a circle that has been embedded in 3 D dimensional Euclidean space but in a
bit simpler language, a knot is created by putting a flat circle into 3 D space; therefore making it 3 D.
You can not just pull the circle up; that would create a cylinder, and you can not just round it out; this
would create a sphere. You must twist it until it intertwines, thus creating a knot. Knots can be
described in many different ways. For example; a common method of describing a knot is called a
knot diagram, which can be used to describe the many ways a knot can be drawn. A fundamental
problem is presented here though, due to the fact that you must determine when a knot is represented
by more than one description. A full algorithmic solution does exist to help solve the problem, but

How Is Princess Diana A Hero
Many consider Princess Diana to have been the most favored members of the British Monarch
(biography.com editors 1). She is the former wife of Prince Charles, and the mother to Princes William
and Harry. Her charitable work with children in impoverished countries has formed her reputation as a
role model for the people of Britain and the rest of the world. She traveled across the world helping
those who are sick and injured. Her work in Africa with the children injured by landmines brought her
into the global spotlight (Wexford 3). Princess Diana was more than just a public figure and royal, she
was a loving person who brought light to social issues and cared for those who could not fend for
themselves. A hero as defined in Webster s Dictionary is a person who a person admired for
achievements or noble qualities or one who shows great courage. However, a hero is more than a
person s achievements. A hero is a person who is philanthropic, generous, and kind. Heros fight for
those who can not fight for themselves, and do not judge those who they are fighting for. They are
charitable in ways other than donating money, they give their time and effort in order to make the lives
of others more pleasant. Heros display bravery. They are willing to go into a dangerous situation to
help others that have been affected. Social pressures and judgements do not affect a hero s willingness
to help others, they are willing to push through what others say in order to complete the tasks

The Effects Of Thalidomide And Its Effects On Children
Thalidomide Paper Thalidomide is a drug that was invented in Germany in the 1950 s. It was
originally intended to treat respiratory infections but during testing, it was noted that the drug worked
to relieve morning sickness for pregnant women. This new reason allowed the drug to be prescribed to
many new patients all over the world. Eventually Thalidomide was discovered to be causing birth
defects in all of the pregnant women that were taking it. It caused the fetus to not develop correctly by
causing limbs of the body or ears to develop improperly or not develop at all. It also cause spinal cord
and digestive system defects as well as problems to the heart and kidneys. Thalidomide stopped being
prescribed but not before many children and families were affected worldwide who had taken the
drug. It took a couple of years before other countries caught up to realize that thalidomide was causing
the birth defects and removed from being an over the counter drug in many countries. It wasn t until
1961 that it was completely removed after it was confirmed that it was causing birth defects. More
than 10000 babies were born with defects and approximately killed 2000 before birth, but fewer than
100 were born here in the U.S.
Short term effects included possible still born babies, and children with many health problems and
complications that severely impacted their quality of life. How much damage the Thalidomide did to
the fetus depended on how early on the mother took the drug.

William Garrison and the Abolitionist Movement
The Abolitionist movement was a reform movement that pursued to terminate the enslavement of
Africans and people of African descent in American, Europe, and Africa. Abolitionist thoughts and
ideas became more and more noticeable in Northern politics and churches starting in the 1830s, which
subsidized to the hatred and bitterness between North and South leading up to the Civil War. One
important abolitionist in this movement was William Lloyd Garrison. He was an American journalist
and a militant abolitionist who helped lead this popular and successful abolitionist movement against
slavery in the United States.
William Garrison was born on December 10, 1805 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. In 1818, at the age
of 13 years old, Garrison was chosen and selected to a seven year training and apprenticeship as an
editor and a journalist. During this apprenticeship, he believed that this was his calling, which was to
start journalism. Through Garrison s numerous and different newspaper jobs, he developed adequate
skills to be capable of running his own newspaper. After he finished his training in 1826, Garrison lent
money from his last boss and bought The Newburyport Essex Courant. He then changed the name of
the paper the Newburyport Free Press and used it as a political instrument for conveying the feelings
and ideas of the old Federalist Party. In this newspaper, he also issued John Greenleaf Whittier s early
poems. John Whittier and William Garrison became very good friends

Multiple forms of differential reinforcement will also be examined in regards to how to transform a
boy who acts out for attention into a boy who understands his behaviour is not necessary. Differences
between girls and boys in an elementary school classroom will also be considered. Through this

The main behaviour issue that she would like Austin to work on is not speaking out in class. She
would like him to raise his hand before he speaks. In Ms. Walker s class, the students are encouraged
to raise their hand anytime they have something to say, a question to ask, or a request for the teacher.
Since the beginning of the school year, Austin has repeatedly disobeyed this rule. It is posted in the
front of the classroom, and Ms. Walker consistently reminds Austin of this, but he forgets. He is not a
typical bad student. He does not do this simply for the fun of it he actually forgets to raise his hand.
He has a thought and immediately wants to act on that thought. He comes from a broken home: his
father left the family when Austin was seven. His mother struggles while working two jobs. Austin
goes to the before and after school program the school offers. His mother is loving towards all four of
her children, but Austin does occasionally get neglected. He has less than ideal self esteem and is
difficult to motivate. When instructed on a one to one basis, Austin is able to complete tasks with
moderate difficulty. Ms. Walker does not have an Educational Assistant in her class, but she does
make an effort to instruct Austin individually there are other needs in her class that take priority over
this one. Behaviour specific praise for Austin

King Solomon Chapter 1
The first sixteen chapters of 2 Chronicles open with the feats of King Solomon, the figure who
dominates the first nine chapters of the reading. The narrative starts off with Solomon already firmly
established, not accounting the struggle it took him to get to this position of favor. This favor is
consummated in chapter 1 when the Lord accepts Solomon s offerings and grants his request for
wisdom. This wisdom results in even more favor as chapter one ends by summarizing the material
wealth the kingdom accumulates. The second chapter immediately dives into Solomon s preparations
to build the Temple by accounting how many people were involved in the work and how a treaty was
formed with the king of Tyre for assistance. Chapter Three describes ... Show more content on

Chapter ten begins with the revolt of Rehoboam s reign. Israel rebels against the house of David when
Rehoboam chooses to disregard the elders who had served Solomon and instead enforces a stricter
rule on the people. Although the split between Israel and Judah is not explicitly made official, chapter
11 foreshadows the split as it profiles the emergence of a rival leader in the form of Jeroboam. The
chapter talks about how Rehoboam gains power through building up his family and building up cities
in preparation for fighting against the rest of Israel. Rehoboam abandons the law of the Lord and is
attacked by the king of Egypt. God had originally intended to use Egypt to completely destroy Israel,
but since the people humbled themselves, Egypt took the treasures in the Temple and subjected the
people to servanthood. Rehoboam continued to reign and faced continual warfare with Jeroboam, the
king of Israel. Chapter 13 talks about how his son Abijah succeeded him as the king of Judah. Abijah
inherited the animosity with Jeroboam as chapter 13 narrates a fierce battle in which Abijah wins
because Judah cried out to the Lord. Judah saw a time of good fortune as the son who succeeded
Abijah, Asa, did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. After ten years of peace and prosperity, Asa s
army defeated Cushite forces in a feat that was clearly the work of the Lord. In Chapter 15 the Lord
spoke to Asa through Azariah to encourage him to keep seeking the Lord, so Asa initiated a series of
major reforms to reduce the pagan cultures in Judah. However, in chapter 16 Asa makes an alliance
with the king of Aram to retaliate against Baasha king of Israel. God was angered that Asa did not
look to the Lord for help first. Asa was angered at this messenger, so he sent the messenger to prison
and brutally oppressed some of the people. Asa stopped seeking the Lord and was punished with a

The Decade Of The 1980 S
The decade of the 1980 s experienced a massive sorts of changes in economics and culture, this
requires a certain analysis of the time and the way culture became intertwined with economics. The
culture transformed and allowed the decade to be read as an experience of cultural products between
culture and economy. Through the conspicuous consumption of the decade, the 1980s encouraged a
cultural shift towards complete commodification (what is this) and interaction with the market. Ronald
Reagan s presidency throughout the decade created a framework for the people, and ultimately, the
culture to transform. His early and continued leadership outlined the tone of the decade and this gave a
context for the theoretical work of neoliberalism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reaganomics was an economic vision, that expressed a way of looking at the world, a framework for
understanding the economy and society and the individual s place within both (Troy and Cannato, eds
128). This serves to further understand and develop the relationship between society and economy.
(how? Expand this quote, you used it for a reason) With the presidential leadership outlining this
impression, it creates room for regeneration and reinvention to occur within the culture of the decade.
Through the implementation of Reaganomics, the American culture was reinvigorated with a new
vision of economics, and even individuality. Reagan consistently addressed the American people and
his effort to restore the self confidence of the American people and their faith in the traditions and
institutions of the country was an important part of the national recovery during the 1980s (Troy and
Cannato, eds, 31). A new cultural space was created and the American culture transformed in
something that was produced and consumed. Americans spent time learning to find their space under
the new economic shift and Reagan s confident leadership. The drive to support American confidence
through the economic shifts cuts through the class politics and allows for Reaganomics to shape the
decade in the later years.

Ethics and Intellectual Property
Ethics and Intellectual Property
Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works;
designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce (United States Patent and Trademark
Office, 2013). There are many ethical issues that have arisen in the business world today pertaining to
intellectual property. Some people may not think that it is important to protect intellectual property
however, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) does just that. Intellectual property
is protected in law by, for example, patents, copyright and trademarks, which enable people to earn
recognition or financial benefit from what they invent or create (United States Patent and Trademark
Office). Protecting trademarks and logos is important, as these things are rightfully owned by the
person or company which created them. Many companies are known by their intellectual property,
such as symbols, names and logos. It can also be very costly to have these artistic logos created,
making it more frustrating when someone chooses to copy or steal the logo and use it as their own.
Ethical Issues
Businesses generally have attorneys to represent them or advise them on business law, and to read
documentation to ensure there are no legal issues. There can be ethical issues when consulting with an
attorney who represents another business that may have similar intellectual property as another
business. In the licensing journal, it

of him.
Jim is a respected young man. Nobody more welcome than yourself my son John Silver would say to
him (54). Silver thinks the world of Jim. Later in the novel the reader finds out that Silver questions
Jim. I see you were smart when I first set my eyes on you; but this here gets away from me clean
(156). Silver says this to him Jim after he confronts all of the mutineers face to face. Jim is even
threatened by the mutineers, but that doesn t stop him from saying what is on his mind. This is a very

Jim, in the beginning of the story, is also portrayed as a disciplined, hard worker. His actions show this

death with a laugh. As for the schooner, it was I who cut her cable, and it was I who killed the men

History Of Vietnam War Drafting
A little over fifty eight thousand Americans died in the Vietnam war. This number could have been
decreased by a lot if only the United states were intelligent about the situation. War drafting was
always argued back in the day and unfortunately the US did not take this away until the end of the
war. The Vietnam war lasted roughly 20 years from 1955 to 1975. We did not put an end to drafting
until 1973. The United States drafted mainly poor class people and rarely the upper class were
involved. The war drafting was not the only problem going on at the time. President Richard Nixon
did not want
Lochard 1 to be the first president to lose a war. The men kept on being drafted to be sent over and this
is how most of them died. John says, Each

I evaluated the information in the document above based upon Moon s (2013) nine measures to
consider in comprehensive gifted education program. I think that FCCPS does a considerably good job
addressing these nine guidelines. However, I believe they should consider more non standardized
materials and data while considering students for identification.
1. Multiple assessments should be given to represent the categories of giftedness identified in the
district s definition (Moon, 2013, p.133).
According to the FCCPS definition of giftedness, the will screen to identify and to appropriately place
student with specific aptitudes and achievement in the pertinent and academically advances programs
(...Language Arts, Mathematics) . Students must receive between the 93rd 99th percentiles on Specific
Academic Aptitude assessments, or the average of their scores must be between the 93rd and 99th
percentiles. FCCPS uses multiple assessments to test for SAA in reading and math including: SAGES,
Raven, STAR Math, STAR Reading, CogATs, and the SOLs (FCCPS, Local Plan for the Education of
the Gifted, p. 7).
2 3. Use the most current versions of standardized tests that are going to be used to make a decision
about admission into a gifted program and that norms are up to date and a good representation of

The First Childhood Memories Of The Holocaust
The creation of memoirs by writers who have gone through traumatic experiences, or just experiences
that are worth remembering are necessary for humanity to move forward. Ranging from the first
childbirth creating a new mother, to survivors of one of the greatest terrors in history: the Holocaust,
memories are required to be recorded for the sake of mankind. Memories are valuable in the fact that
they can be lost so easily and forgotten that they ever existed. There are things that you have said,
things that others have said, experiences you ve lived through that you will never remember again, as
if it never happened. Days that you can t even recall the simplest details about. The memory of my
birth is important not in the sense that it was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Memories replicated are never the same, and only a waste of time, because no situation can ever be
exactly the same and produce the exact outcome more than once. Memories are never truly replaced,
they are always at the back of your head, waiting for a time where it would be brought back into
thinking. Memories are never replaced, just layered as new memories occur during every living
moment. Although they get pushed down farther and farther as more memories happen causing you
not to think that far into the past, the memory s there, always just slightly beyond the veil of
remembrance. Flashing back to memories more than a decade and a half before can be a priceless
privilege that can be taken for granted. When people grow older, and their memories start to fade, the
memories left behind have more value because there s so little left. Memories have more meaning
when they re about to be lost forever with the death of someone and the ceasing of their brain signals
that keeps those memories alive. Memories prevent history from repeating, from mistakes to not
happen again, and for the universe to keep moving. When we lose all memories, we lose our

The Equal Pay Act Of 1963 ( Epa ) And Title Vii Of The...
An egalitarian is someone who believes that not only should women be equal to men, but everyone
should be equal to everyone and the only thing that separates us is our merits and the things that we
have worked to achieve in life. That is why I am and always will be an egalitarian.
When it comes to any kind of a pay gap, I refer you to Fortune.com article, Here s What it Takes to
Sue For Gender Pay Discrimination and Win, which stated Pay discrimination based on sex has long
been illegal. Both the Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA) and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
prohibit paying someone less for the same work because of gender. The article later goes on to detail
how to go about the legal process and what evidence is required in order to win your case, and what
things to be wary of when pursuing legal action. So if you feel that you are being paid less than a
coworker based on race, sex, orientation, or anything else that would be defined as discrimination
under the law, I urge you to seek out legal counsel and bring your employer to justice for the crime
they are committing.
If you feel you were passed up for a promotion on the basis of nothing other than gender or sex than
you can seek out legal counsel as according to the United States Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission It is illegal for an employer to make decisions about job assignments and promotions
based on an employee s race, color, religion, sex (including gender identity, sexual

1920s Fashion Research Paper
Fashion in the United States
Events occurred throughout the Roaring Twenties in the United States that changed the way people in
the 1900s would view women forever. Women in the 1900s were restricted by clothes that they could
wear. Advertisements displayed them as a maid. In the 1920s, while the men were fighting, women s
independence increased. This transformation caused a drastic change in their appearance.Women had
to perform a variety of trades that normally only men could do. Over the course of 20 years, clothing
styles changed immensely because of the closing gap between men and women. The differing gender
equality in the 1900s and the 1920s shows how fashion was influenced throughout these time periods.

Essay about Gunsmoke Synthesis
Gunsmoke Synthesis
Between the years 1952 to 1961, the series Gunsmoke was broadcasted across the nation. The show
gave people insight into a past life of men who carried guns, fought for what was theirs, and showed
that even the hardest people could be tamed.
It was a time when the heroes of the old west started settling down, and in doing so they were either
good guys like sheriffs, or they were bad guys that robbed people or places. From the stories of
Gunsmoke the central character was a U.S. Marshall named Matt Dillon. He was calm, steady, and
easy to talk with. In Gunsmoke we see a man that takes his job seriously, from helping those in need
to catching the wanted. The thing about Matt Dillon that catches you is that even ... Show more

As a Marshall in a town the size of Dodge, Dillon would have to just about everything needed to be
done, as in Bloody Hands when he walks into a bar that you new was about to have a gun fight, and
breaks it up. Marshall Dillon was willing to do whatever needed to be done no matter how dangerous.
When Marshall Dillon knew that the widow Hordbee had a bounty on him, he still sat on the porch
showing no fear. Dillon had learned to depend on himself and he trusted very few others people.
When the bad guys got out of hand it seemed like Marshall Dillon always had a gun in hand for in this
place almost all men wore guns. In Bloody Hands we hear that Marshall Dillon hit one man in the
head and knocked him out cold with his six gun handle. In the same way, the story Skid Row Dillon
shoots and kills the young boy, the drunk, and all of the rest of the men that tried to get the thousand
dollar bounty. To be a Marshall, he needed to be quick and very good with his gun as well as his mind.
It seems like Dillon had a shoot first, then also questions later attitude, when it came bringing bad
guys to justice.
The thing that we need to remember is that the west was different then it is now, for the Marshall was
more then just a law ma; he was the person that you needed to see to know what was allowed. One
thing that Dillon said about himself is that he was The first man [people] look for and the last

  • 2. The Girl The World Forgot Essay She stood there as the world passed her by. Ever since she came into the world, it has turned its back to her. Shunned her and continued on their way, without a second glance. She stood in the background of life, watching the forgotten beauties that everyone had forgotten, like her. Even now she leaned up against a tall oak tree that stretched out across the sky, long limps twisting together and bright green leaves scattered about. The old tree had been there for a long time, and yet everyone that passed by was too busy to take in the grandness of what surrounded them. However, every flower that pressed through the cracks of the broken sidewalk, every bird that flew across the sky, every creature that walked by her she would stand in ... Time swirled together and she was unable to tell how long she had been waiting and yet she still kept on waiting. She pushed back her long hair behind her ears as she titled her head to the side when she heard a male voice, but frowned when she saw a young high school kid come around the corner calling for his friends, who were a few feet ahead of him. It wasn t him. She sighed, he was late. Of course he was always late; it was one of the few things that she loved about him. His world was perfect to those who saw him, and he was very old fashioned, and yet for some reason her heart would began to pound when he would be several minutes late and then profusely apologize to her. Seeing him not put together and be clumsy around her made her feel special. As the memories faded away she smiled as she titled her head up to the sky and closed her eyes. She remembered now, why she kept going on in this world. The beauty of this world captivated her and made her feel not so alone, but he had given her the strength to put her foot forward and to keep moving in this thing that they call life. And that is why she was waiting; she was waiting for him to come to her. She had always been waiting for him. He always seemed to be off in his own little world, but all she could was pray ... • 3. Third Of May 1808 Essay Francisco Goya s painting titled The Third of May 1808 represents its intended message about war. The Third of May 1808 was composed during the era of romanticism in 1814. In this work, Goya Depicts a gruesome scene during the spanish uprising at the beginning of the peninsula war. This piece was completed in 1814, but was lost and damaged in World War 2. It has since been found and is located in Madrid, Spain. The Third of May 1808 is a traditional oil on canvas piece. This painting was meant to commemorate those who stood up and fought against the French during the uprising. The painting was representing the execution of Spanish rebels by French soldiers commanded by Napoleon Bonaparte. This particular painting by Goya is not his first message ... This stood for he men, women, and children who will die today will be remembered in the hearts of the spanish who would go to fight the French for the oncoming years. The stigma in the man s hand is the most important part of the painting. In the group of men about to be executed, there is a friar praying before his death. Illumination is used almost exclusively in this piece. In the past, Illumination techniques have portrayed the presence of God or some sort of divine presence. In Goya s painting there is no religious connotation. There is more of an opposing connotation. The light is used to kill, not heal. The viewer s eyes are carried by the outlines of the lantern. The lights of the lantern carry you to the dead body of a man. With The Third of May 1808 Goya displayed the disasters of war with a very fitting art style. Illumination was used well to bring the focal point of the piece to the hopeless men ready to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Role Of Large Corporations Under Repressive Regime What is the role of large corporations under repressive regime? Do they engage in criminal activities? If yes, how should they be included in a process of transitional justice? The purpose of this work is to establish the links between the business world and transitional justice mechanisms. My purpose is more specifically to link the potential crimes perpetrated by corporations and the transitional justice mechanisms. This work does not link the transitional justice field to a defined field of research. Corporate responsibility or accountability is a concept coming from law and business literature. For the United Nations, transitional justice is the full range of processes and mechanisms associated with a society s attempt to come to terms with a legacy of large scale past abuses, in order to ensure accountability, serve justice and achieve reconciliation. The vast majority of the literature discussing transitional justice focuses on individuals or states, not collective organizations. Mechanisms of transitional justice are fourfold and include: a justice process, a reparation process, a truth process and a stabilization process. All these 4 processes are studied as either applying to individuals or state. However, in many cases the responsibility of individuals is related to the collective responsibility of a group or an organization other than the state. The objective of this work is to try to connect the role of businesses and transitional justice mechanisms. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are several ways in which a person could find himself or herself in a position of authority. For example, a priest has the authority of the church while a mother or father has parental authority over children. In the uniformed public services, positions of authority come with promotion. An officer may be promoted because of certain achievements and special attributes, such as experience in the service, good character, knowledge of the job, dedication, self discipline and the respect of one s colleagues. If you join the uniformed public services and are placed in a position of authority, you may lawfully command team members, who recognise your authority and their duty to obey those legitimate commands. • 10. Animal Cruelty in Slaughter Houses Essay Draft 2 What are currently the poor conditions for animals in the American slaughterhouses, what are the causes of these conditions, and what are the best methods for preventing slaughterhouse cruelty? The conditions for animals in modern slaughterhouses are unsanitary and violent. The lack of rules and regulations cause animals to be treated poorly because this industry is focused on mass production and profit rather than finding a more humane alternative to run the meat packing business. The most effective method to stop this cruelty is to learn about where meat comes from, start supporting the organic and family farms which will ultimately lead to the reducing the amount of animals that have to suffer. Millions of animals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After, another belt takes them to where a worker cuts their throat and allows them to bleed out. Some animals are hung up side down by their back legs and move through the processing line where their necks will be cut one by one (Dugan). Sometimes one of these methods will not work and the animal will be disassembled while still conscious. For most humans, especially for those in modern urban and suburban communities, the most direct form or contact with non human animals is at meal time: we eat them. This simple fact is the key to what each one of us can do about changing these attitudes. The use and abuse of animals raised for food far exceeds, in sheer numbers of animals affected, any other kind of mistreatment (Coats). The most effective method to stop this cruelty is to learn about where the meat comes from, by supporting the organic and family farms which will ultimately lead to the reducing the amount of animals that have to suffer (PETA). More than 95 percent of animal abuse in America occurs in the meat packing industry (Harper Low). Animals suffer an unimaginable amount, they are raised to be killed, then bought and then consumed. • 12. Analysis Of The Film American History X Vandalism, murder, and rape are only a taste of the violence presented within the film American HIstory X (Tony Kaye). In his work, Kaye explores the origins of racism through the minds of Derek (Edward Norton) and his brother, Danny (Edward Furlong); however, the film tells the story of far more than these two brothers. It tells the story of all those who have ever overcame their prejudice feelings through the process of introspection and their proximity to those they are prejudice towards. While the situations and character transformations presented within Tony Kaye s film are too radical and fast paced, it generates a true insight to the way of thinking that leads towards racism as well as how some may overcome this weakness of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kaye s creation presents a list of unreal situations. As the audience catches up with Danny years after he witnesses his brother killing two black men, we find him in the principal s office for submitting a glowing review of Hitler s book Mein Kampf. If someone were foolish enough to submit a review of Mein Kampf for their high school English paper, they are foolish enough to make a mistake worthy of expulsion far before they are at the grade level to write essays over books. To continue with these coincidences, it is odd that the moment Danny changes his character and begins to accept people of color as people he is shot by a person of color. This coincidence has clearly been used to assist Hollywood as it attempts to tell its audience that racism will lead to a life of misery or even no life at all. While Hollywood may be correct in this regard, using a coincidence to present this idea is academically unacceptable. While these problems are real, they are all relatively small and are overshadowed by one large imperfection. Kaye s film, while a true work of art, has one fatal flaw, change cannot occur at the same pace shown within Danny s transformation, especially when taking his environment into consideration. Change takes time, especially when dealing with a deep seated prejudice such as racism. James Loggins Humanities 2210 Unit 2 Research Essay 24 October 2016 The Renaissance painter, sculptor, and poet Michelangelo is famous not only for his painting of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or his sculpture of the Biblical King David, but he also created another Biblical figure, the Hebrew Prophet Moses. The sculpture was commissioned by Pope Julius II, in an attempt to mirror his larger than life reputation and personality. Michelangelo Moses along with other pieces of sculpture and artwork were to be enshrined in the Pope s planned resting place, with the Moses statue placed opposite of another figure of Saint Paul. However, it would never come to be, as the Moses sculpture would not be completed until more than 30 years after Pope Julius death in 1513. Pope Julius II had commissioned Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel as well as build his entire tomb, but the chapel frescos occupied all of the painter s time (Michelangelo Gallery.com). However, once the Sistine Chapel frescos were finally completed Michelangelo immediately resumed his work on Moses, completing it in 1545. This sculpture marks a significant innovation, combining sculpturing and architecture for the first time in his career. As part of the Allies bombing campaign against Germany during the war, the Dambusters wa an elite Lancaster bomber unit and the raid was led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC. How much impact the Dambusters raid had is still debated but what cannot be denied is the bravery of the men involved in the raid and the unique contribution made by Dr.Barnes Wallis who developed the unique bouncing bomb that was used on the raid. In March 1941, he completed a piece of work entitled A note on the method of attacking the Axis powers. Wallis had envisaged the Allies using a huge bomb against the Germans ten tons in weight so that any building/object was vulnerable to an aerial attack even if it was built underground. • 21. The Experience Machine By Nozick Have you ever wished you could have anything you wanted in life? I know I have. I ve always wanted a world where everything would be to my liking and nothing would be to my dissatisfaction. Nozick sets up a scenario where we can get a maximum amount of pleasure by plugging into an experience machine that allows us to undergo anything we wanted while we are in a tank with electrodes attached to our heads. One will be plugged in for two years at a time but while one is attached, the experiences are going to seem like they are actually happening. He takes this machine to disprove the hedonism view that says consciously experience pleasure is the most important thing to living a good life. In his opinion he would not plug in because while one is in the machine, one cannot do certain things, be a certain person or come in contact with reality. I had never really thought about the option of experiencing anything I wanted versus living a normal life before, but after reading The Experience Machine by Nozick, I would pick living in a normal life because even though experiencing anything I wanted would cause as much pleasure as possible, it limits one to things that are important to human life such as being able to physically perform or experience things and having an impact in society The experience machine makes one feel like you are actually performing or experiencing the things one is doing while plugged in but in reality, as Nozick described, you are floating in a tank with ... • 22. Nancy Mairs s Passage In The Passage Of Nancy Mair In the passage, Nancy Mairs presents herself as an empowered, intelligent, and strong cripple. The first line is I am a cripple which is pretty straightforward, and the matter of fact tone that it is stated in stays pretty consistent throughout the entire passage. Mairs upfront attitude from the start convinces the reader that she is unafraid to identify herself however she wants. Later she states that she refuses to pretend that the only differences between you and me are the various ordinary ones that distinguish any one person from another . She is realistic to a point that she occasionally seems cynical, but deeper analysis of the text reveals that that is untrue. Throughout the entire passage, Mairs establishes that she is extremely intelligent. She uses a colorful vocabulary (semantic, euphemism, calamitous) and complex sentences. Mairs also makes reference to famous authors and their work. Mairs says my God is not a Handicapper General, which alludes to Harrison Bergeron, a short story by Kurt Vonnegut, as well as a 10th century gospel piece in line 18. She establishes her intelligence in order to prove to the reader that she is simply crippled and not disabled, which suggests any incapacity physical or mental . It is clear that Mairs has no mental incapacity, and she makes this very clear purposefully. Nancy chooses to use the word crippled because other words aren t as straightforward and precise, and as a lover of words she likes the conciseness of the word ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. Humor And Looking For Comedy In The Muslim World I think humor is important for communication because it conveys another message and idea altogether. We need to study something like humor in order to understand why we laugh and what kind of ideas make us laugh. In the case of the movie Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World , I learned that humor can create a good or bad connection between countries and not just its people. Humor is subjective because of the audience it communicates to; as a result, not everyone may understand a certain reference when it comes to farce, comedy or jokes that are being discussed. Humor is important when it comes to communicating an idea through ads, propaganda and even social media like Twitter (Holton and Lewis 1). In the film, Albert Brooks, is tasked by the American government to determine what makes the Muslim people laugh. At first, he thinks that the task is actually achievable based on what he is told by the government personnel in the meeting he attends at the start of the movie. But throughout the whole film, he realizes that the task is more daunting than expected. Despite the help that he receives through the US government in completing his diplomatic mission, he doesn t succeed. A possible reason for this could be how he isn t able to communicate his humor to his audience. Albert didn t fully understand that his goal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 24. Math Knot Theory and Celtic Knots l Ve always had an interest in Celtic culture. I love the traditional clothing and dancing, but my favorite part has always been the symbolism and beauty of Celtic Knots. I wondered where the knots originated and how they were created so symmetrically, which led me to the mathematical study of knot theory. So my question now is, How has the knot theory in mathematics influenced and shaped the tradition of Celtic Knots? Knots in the real world are easy to define and see, such as tying a shoelace or a rope, but knots in the mathematical world are a bit different. These knots are joined at the end, making them one continuous line, unable to be pulled apart or untied. They can be described in mathematical terms as a circle that has been embedded in 3 D dimensional Euclidean space but in a bit simpler language, a knot is created by putting a flat circle into 3 D space; therefore making it 3 D. You can not just pull the circle up; that would create a cylinder, and you can not just round it out; this would create a sphere. You must twist it until it intertwines, thus creating a knot. Knots can be described in many different ways. For example; a common method of describing a knot is called a knot diagram, which can be used to describe the many ways a knot can be drawn. A fundamental problem is presented here though, due to the fact that you must determine when a knot is represented by more than one description. A full algorithmic solution does exist to help solve the problem, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She is the former wife of Prince Charles, and the mother to Princes William and Harry. Her charitable work with children in impoverished countries has formed her reputation as a role model for the people of Britain and the rest of the world. She traveled across the world helping those who are sick and injured. Her work in Africa with the children injured by landmines brought her into the global spotlight (Wexford 3). Princess Diana was more than just a public figure and royal, she was a loving person who brought light to social issues and cared for those who could not fend for themselves. A hero as defined in Webster s Dictionary is a person who a person admired for achievements or noble qualities or one who shows great courage. However, a hero is more than a person s achievements. A hero is a person who is philanthropic, generous, and kind. Heros fight for those who can not fight for themselves, and do not judge those who they are fighting for. They are charitable in ways other than donating money, they give their time and effort in order to make the lives of others more pleasant. Heros display bravery. They are willing to go into a dangerous situation to help others that have been affected. • 27. The Effects Of Thalidomide And Its Effects On Children Thalidomide Paper Thalidomide is a drug that was invented in Germany in the 1950 s. It was originally intended to treat respiratory infections but during testing, it was noted that the drug worked to relieve morning sickness for pregnant women. This new reason allowed the drug to be prescribed to many new patients all over the world. Eventually Thalidomide was discovered to be causing birth defects in all of the pregnant women that were taking it. It caused the fetus to not develop correctly by causing limbs of the body or ears to develop improperly or not develop at all. It also cause spinal cord and digestive system defects as well as problems to the heart and kidneys. Thalidomide stopped being prescribed but not before many children and families were affected worldwide who had taken the drug. It took a couple of years before other countries caught up to realize that thalidomide was causing the birth defects and removed from being an over the counter drug in many countries. It wasn t until 1961 that it was completely removed after it was confirmed that it was causing birth defects. More than 10000 babies were born with defects and approximately killed 2000 before birth, but fewer than 100 were born here in the U.S. Short term effects included possible still born babies, and children with many health problems and complications that severely impacted their quality of life. How much damage the Thalidomide did to the fetus depended on how early on the mother took the drug. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The narrative starts off with Solomon already firmly established, not accounting the struggle it took him to get to this position of favor. This favor is consummated in chapter 1 when the Lord accepts Solomon s offerings and grants his request for wisdom. This wisdom results in even more favor as chapter one ends by summarizing the material wealth the kingdom accumulates. Israel rebels against the house of David when Rehoboam chooses to disregard the elders who had served Solomon and instead enforces a stricter rule on the people. Although the split between Israel and Judah is not explicitly made official, chapter 11 foreshadows the split as it profiles the emergence of a rival leader in the form of Jeroboam. The chapter talks about how Rehoboam gains power through building up his family and building up cities in preparation for fighting against the rest of Israel. Rehoboam abandons the law of the Lord and is attacked by the king of Egypt. God had originally intended to use Egypt to completely destroy Israel, but since the people humbled themselves, Egypt took the treasures in the Temple and subjected the people to servanthood. Rehoboam continued to reign and faced continual warfare with Jeroboam, the king of Israel. Chapter 13 talks about how his son Abijah succeeded him as the king of Judah. Abijah inherited the animosity with Jeroboam as chapter 13 narrates a fierce battle in which Abijah wins because Judah cried out to the Lord. Judah saw a time of good fortune as the son who succeeded Abijah, Asa, did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. After ten years of peace and prosperity, Asa s army defeated Cushite forces in a feat that was clearly the work of the Lord. In Chapter 15 the Lord spoke to Asa through Azariah to encourage him to keep seeking the Lord, so Asa initiated a series of major reforms to reduce the pagan cultures in Judah. However, in chapter 16 Asa makes an alliance with the king of Aram to retaliate against Baasha king of Israel. God was angered that Asa did not look to the Lord for help first. Ethics and Intellectual Property Ethics and Intellectual Property Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce (United States Patent and Trademark Office, 2013). There are many ethical issues that have arisen in the business world today pertaining to intellectual property. Some people may not think that it is important to protect intellectual property however, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) does just that. Intellectual property is protected in law by, for example, patents, copyright and trademarks, which enable people to earn recognition or financial benefit from what they invent or create (United States Patent and Trademark Office). Protecting trademarks and logos is important, as these things are rightfully owned by the person or company which created them. Many companies are known by their intellectual property, such as symbols, names and logos. It can also be very costly to have these artistic logos created, making it more frustrating when someone chooses to copy or steal the logo and use it as their own. Ethical Issues Businesses generally have attorneys to represent them or advise them on business law, and to read documentation to ensure there are no legal issues. Falls Church City s Local Plan for the Education of the Gifted can be found at the following address: https://docs.google.com/a/fccps.org/file/d/0B7vaFg7PcgKyTGs3T3NZcGtaRjQ/edit I evaluated the information in the document above based upon Moon s (2013) nine measures to consider in comprehensive gifted education program. I think that FCCPS does a considerably good job addressing these nine guidelines. However, I believe they should consider more non standardized materials and data while considering students for identification. 1. Multiple assessments should be given to represent the categories of giftedness identified in the district s definition (Moon, 2013, p.133). According to the FCCPS definition of giftedness, the will screen to identify and to appropriately place student with specific aptitudes and achievement in the pertinent and academically advances programs (...Language Arts, Mathematics) . Students must receive between the 93rd 99th percentiles on Specific Academic Aptitude assessments, or the average of their scores must be between the 93rd and 99th percentiles. FCCPS uses multiple assessments to test for SAA in reading and math including: SAGES, Raven, STAR Math, STAR Reading, CogATs, and the SOLs (FCCPS, Local Plan for the Education of the Gifted, p. 7). 2 3. Use the most current versions of standardized tests that are going to be used to make a decision about admission into a gifted program and that norms are up to date and a good representation of ... • 41. The First Childhood Memories Of The Holocaust The creation of memoirs by writers who have gone through traumatic experiences, or just experiences that are worth remembering are necessary for humanity to move forward. Ranging from the first childbirth creating a new mother, to survivors of one of the greatest terrors in history: the Holocaust, memories are required to be recorded for the sake of mankind. Memories are valuable in the fact that they can be lost so easily and forgotten that they ever existed. There are things that you have said, things that others have said, experiences you ve lived through that you will never remember again, as if it never happened. Days that you can t even recall the simplest details about. The memory of my birth is important not in the sense that it was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Memories replicated are never the same, and only a waste of time, because no situation can ever be exactly the same and produce the exact outcome more than once. Memories are never truly replaced, they are always at the back of your head, waiting for a time where it would be brought back into thinking. Memories are never replaced, just layered as new memories occur during every living moment. Although they get pushed down farther and farther as more memories happen causing you not to think that far into the past, the memory s there, always just slightly beyond the veil of remembrance. Flashing back to memories more than a decade and a half before can be a priceless privilege that can be taken for granted. When people grow older, and their memories start to fade, the memories left behind have more value because there s so little left. Memories have more meaning when they re about to be lost forever with the death of someone and the ceasing of their brain signals that keeps those memories alive. Memories prevent history from repeating, from mistakes to not happen again, and for the universe to keep moving. When we lose all memories, we lose our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Equal Pay Act Of 1963 ( Epa ) And Title Vii Of The... An egalitarian is someone who believes that not only should women be equal to men, but everyone should be equal to everyone and the only thing that separates us is our merits and the things that we have worked to achieve in life. That is why I am and always will be an egalitarian. When it comes to any kind of a pay gap, I refer you to Fortune.com article, Here s What it Takes to Sue For Gender Pay Discrimination and Win, which stated Pay discrimination based on sex has long been illegal. Both the Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA) and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibit paying someone less for the same work because of gender. The article later goes on to detail how to go about the legal process and what evidence is required in order to win your case, and what things to be wary of when pursuing legal action. So if you feel that you are being paid less than a coworker based on race, sex, orientation, or anything else that would be defined as discrimination under the law, I urge you to seek out legal counsel and bring your employer to justice for the crime they are committing. If you feel you were passed up for a promotion on the basis of nothing other than gender or sex than you can seek out legal counsel as according to the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission It is illegal for an employer to make decisions about job assignments and promotions based on an employee s race, color, religion, sex (including gender identity, sexual ... Women in the 1900s were restricted by clothes that they could wear. Advertisements displayed them as a maid. In the 1920s, while the men were fighting, women s independence increased. This transformation caused a drastic change in their appearance.Women had to perform a variety of trades that normally only men could do. Over the course of 20 years, clothing styles changed immensely because of the closing gap between men and women. • 44. Essay about Gunsmoke Synthesis Gunsmoke Synthesis Between the years 1952 to 1961, the series Gunsmoke was broadcasted across the nation. The show gave people insight into a past life of men who carried guns, fought for what was theirs, and showed that even the hardest people could be tamed. It was a time when the heroes of the old west started settling down, and in doing so they were either good guys like sheriffs, or they were bad guys that robbed people or places. From the stories of Gunsmoke the central character was a U.S. Marshall named Matt Dillon. He was calm, steady, and easy to talk with. In Gunsmoke we see a man that takes his job seriously, from helping those in need to catching the wanted. The thing about Matt Dillon that catches you is that even ... Marshall Dillon was willing to do whatever needed to be done no matter how dangerous. When Marshall Dillon knew that the widow Hordbee had a bounty on him, he still sat on the porch showing no fear. Dillon had learned to depend on himself and he trusted very few others people. When the bad guys got out of hand it seemed like Marshall Dillon always had a gun in hand for in this place almost all men wore guns. In Bloody Hands we hear that Marshall Dillon hit one man in the head and knocked him out cold with his six gun handle. In the same way, the story Skid Row Dillon shoots and kills the young boy, the drunk, and all of the rest of the men that tried to get the thousand dollar bounty. To be a Marshall, he needed to be quick and very good with his gun as well as his mind. It seems like Dillon had a shoot first, then also questions later attitude, when it came bringing bad guys to justice. The thing that we need to remember is that the west was different then it is now, for the Marshall was more then just a law ma; he was the person that you needed to see to know what was allowed.
