A Summary Of Cora Unashamed
The short story Cora Unashamed by Langston Hughes is about an African American woman who
works for an established white family. Cora is their housekeeper and looks after their youngest
daughter Jessie. Cora lost her only child soon after it was born so the Studevant s daughter, Jessie,
became like a daughter to Cora. As Jessie grows, she falls and love and becomes pregnant. Cora
encourages her love and her pregnancy. However, Jessie mother refuses to allow her daughter to have
the child and Jessie has an abortion. Jessie eventually dies of grief. At her funeral, Cora s increasing
anger finally is voiced. She cries, They killed you, honey. They killed you and your child. I told em
you loved it, but they didn t care. They killed it before it was... (Langston, 7). Cora is removed from
the funeral by force and she gathers her belongings and leaves the Studevants for good. This paper
will discuss the possible consequences of Cora s outburst and whether it was worth it to express
herself so abruptly. Although Cora waiting until most of the funeral was over, her uproar still took
place while the Studevant s home held mourning family and friends. Cora allowed her feeling, as just
as they may be, to overwhelm her and to cloud her mind. The very nature of her speech was
spontaneous. We can see this because her comments are directed toward Jessie, not her mother, and
not those who attended the funeral. Cora is overcome with greif and anger, which causes her to act
out. They

Dropbox Assignment 5: Read the Case Study 7.2 Karla, African American Salesperson and Case
Study 7.3 Karla Gets Promoted (Carr Ruffino, p. 269 270). What might be happening behind the
scenes here? Key issues? Root problems? What do you think Daniel should do? What do you think
Karla should do? Create your discussion using the 4 key steps of a Case Study: Step 1: Identify
surface problems, Step 2: Ask Why Why to get root problem, Step 3: Generate solutions, and Step 4:
Take action or make recommendations. Provide solid support for those recommendations.
The Case Study 7.2 Karla, African American Salesperson
Step 1: Identify surface problems
The treatment of Karla by her coworkers is the main surface problem because she seemed to be
avoided by her coworkers who do not invite her to social gatherings after work. I assume that she is
not treated as a social buddy may be because she is African American or may be it could be a result of
her work ethic. It is the job of the manager (Daniel) to address this issue immediately before it goes
far, to avoid creating an unfriendly or/and hostile work environment that might affect the productivity.
Step 2: Ask Why Why to get root problem
There is no doubt that the root problem is stereotypical cultural that does not allow the social mixing
of different races inside and outside of work environment. The cause might be a lack of Diversity
training that could probably give and allow employees to have open mind and wider work views

The Grateful Dead And LSD In The 1970 s
The late 1960 s and early 1970 s was a time of intense political change and shifting worldviews,
especially in the Bay Area. Particularly, the summer of 1967, nicknamed the Summer of Love, had
widespread political impacts, even though that was not the intention for some participants. With the
emergence of LSD and new optimistic, loving mindsets, hippie culture shaped peoples actions in
regards to prominent issues in the years following, such as the Vietnam War and the War on Drugs.
This paper will explore how the Grateful Dead influenced and adapted ideas from this time period.
Despite the band s self proclaimed apolitical stance, the Grateful Dead inadvertently influenced the
proliferation of LSD, the War on Drugs, and drug use in conjunction ... Show more content on

As more people encountered the Grateful Dead and the Acid Tests, more people wanted to join in on
the group mind, thus growing the use of LSD. The Grateful Dead were not famous when they began
playing the Acid Tests, but as LSD and the Acid Tests grew in popularity, the band s own popularity
grew with them. The members of the band itself had not used psychedelics (other than marijuana)
before they started playing at the Acid Tests, but they quickly became immersed in the culture thanks
to those around them. Owsley Stanley, a Grateful Dead soundman and underground chemist, would
synthesize his own LSD to give out free samples outside of Grateful Dead concerts so no one felt left
out of the experience (Gitlin). Pairing LSD with music was all anyone ever knew because of the Acid
Tests and made the experience what it was. Michael J. Kramer describes the culture surrounding the
Grateful Dead in his book The Republic of Rock as, a way for strangers to establish bonds of
affiliation and connection through risk taking particularly through drug use and electronically
generated chaos (Kramer 35). The Acid Tests reflected a popular opposition to the mainstream. LSD
was marketed as a daring, exciting substance and more people became eager to try it, especially
alongside the Grateful Dead. This direct pairing of the band with drugs through the Acid Tests is the
first way that the Grateful Dead directly influenced the proliferation of LSD and continued to do so
even as political views began to be associated with the

Othello’s Diversity of Imagery Essay
Othello s Diversity of Imagery
The diverse imagery found in Shakespeare s drama Othello represents a world all by itself. And this
world of imagery contributes to the prevailing sentiment of pain and suffering and unpleasantness.
There is no shortage of imagery in the play; this is for certain. Critic Caroline Spurgeon in
Shakespeare s Imagery and What it Tells Us sorts through the plethora of imagery in the play:
The main image in Othello is that of animals in action, preying upon one another, mischievous,
lascivious, cruel or suffering, and through these, the general sense of pain and unpleasantness is much
increased and kept constantly before us. More than half the animal images in the play are ... Show

The peculiar pain of sexual jealousy is deeply involved with the excremental aspect of the sexual
organs, and the emotion in betrayal in a supremely intimate trust is involved with agonizing
associations of filth and animality. (1200)
Just how strong a force is the imagery in this drama? Is it more powerful than the chorus in ancient
Greek tragedy? H. S. Wilson in his book of literary criticism, On the Design of Shakespearean
Tragedy, discusses the influence of the imagery of the play:
It has indeed been suggested that the logic of events in the play and of Othello s relation to them
implies Othello s damnation, and that the implication is pressed home with particular power in the
imagery. This last amounts to interpreting the suggestions of the imagery as a means of comment by
the author the analogy would be the choruses of Greek tragedy. It is true that the play contains many
references to heaven and hell and devils. as Wilson Knight has pointed out. But Mr. Knight has wisely
refrained from drawing the conclusion that Shakespeare means thus to comment upon Othello s
ultimate fate. (66)

occupant: Awake! what, ho, Brabantio! thieves! thieves! thieves! / Look to your house, your daughter

Essay On Remy s Marxist Ladder Of Social Hierarchy
Remy s Marxist Ladder of Social Hierarchy The original Pixar film Ratatouille, entails a marxist
centered motif in which maps out Remy s desire and passion for climbing the social ladder; in order to
reach the success of being a chef in the most popular restaurant and become apart of the higher social
class where the humans thrive. Remy s family is a mischief of rats who are depicted as the lower class.
The sewer, being a perfect place to depict the slums is where the rats live and as the lower class
(stereotypically) steals in order to make ends meet. Remy was born with the gift of acute smelling that
automatically put on a pedestal over everyone in the colony and is given the most important job in the
which is to check the food for poison. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can be exemplified during a conversation between Remy and his Father Don t you feel better
Remy? You ve helped a noble cause! Noble? We re thieves Dad. Remy s family does not believe in his
passion of cooking, though Remy s immense smelling capabilities give him the advantage of being a
spectacular cook. Because his family does not believe in him, he leads danger to his colony causing a
mass exodus of his colony. Because he is then given the opportunity to be on his own, Remy gathers a
cookbook and heads on his own way. Adventuring through the tunnels where he endured the more
dangerous of obstacles and facing near starvation. Upon exit of the tunnel, Remy stumbles upon a
ladder (the ladder to the surface). The ladder represents the economic ladder of progress and Remy s
advancement from the lower class to the middle class (the middle class being the world above the
sewers and the people living above) just by taking the first steps toward his goals. Further proving and
concluding that marxism is relevant throughout Ratatouille comes from the critic of the restaurant
Anton Ego. Ego, is represented as the upper class in the social economic ladder in the movie. Ego is

Memory and Fortune in the Odyssey
When scholars analyze themes of meaning in the Homeric epic The Odyssey, a common area of focus
is the significance of memory and forgetting to the story. One interpretation of the text poses that
characters being able to remember Odysseus brings about fortunate consequences for the protagonist,
while forgetting about him or his deeds leads to negative ones. However, the forgetting of Odysseus s
transgressions by the suitor s fathers at the end of the epic contradicts this as Odysseus is spared
through it. It is through the juxtaposition of Athena s requests for memory and forgetting, respectively,
at the beginning and conclusion of the epic that show the retention of the memory of Odysseus by
others is not inherently beneficial nor detrimental to him. Rather, memory is a tool: a double edged
sword that can either improve or worsen his condition based on circumstance. What is inherent,
however, is the tendency of events to progress, albeit slowly and circuitously, towards the inevitable
homecoming of Odysseus, his retaking of the seat of power, and the return to normalcy on Icatha.
Memory and forgetting merely serve as a means to achieve that fated end, rather than being objects of
meaning themselves. That the remembrance of Odysseus by other characters helps him out later on in
the epic is certainly supported by events that transpire in the first half of the story. The action begins
with Athena pleading with her father Zeus to release Odysseus from his two decade

Myths And Misconceptions Of Serial Killers
The term serial killers has never really been defined until roughly 1998 when congress passes a
Children Protection act from Sexual Predator Act of 1998. This Act defined serial killers as a series of
at least three or more killings. However because of the definition of serial killers, they often get
confused between serial killers and a spree murder. The Difference is that spree murderers often get
killed or seriously killed, however spree murderers have also killed themselves. Although serial killers
are extremely rare event that is estimated to constitute for less than 1% of all murders committed.
Serial killers mostly kill over a time period killing more than three victims, however many serial

The Three Forms Of Democracy
Since ancient times, democracy is seen as the most viable solution when it comes to matters of
governance. Aristotle saw democracy as the pinnacle of the benevolent types of the government forms
that existed in his time. But what is it that makes democracy better than the others? To find an answer
to that question, one must first take a look at the opposition. One must understand what the other types
of government types lack that democracy has. There are many types of governance. In this essay, three
types of governmental forms, aside from democracy, have been chosen as a comparison medium.
Monarchy, Dictatorship and Theocratic governments. Monarchy is a type of government in which
sovereignty is held by ,in most cases, one individual until their death or dethronement. There are many

When in a political environment the election of different governments can lead to frequent changes in
the policies of the country, changing the political landscape of the country. For example frequent
changes of the extraterritorial policies can cripple the nations economy by making investments non
profitable for foreign and local investors and thus crippling the nations economy. This fact is
considered by some as to why a democracy is not the best kind of government for a developing nation
whose aim is the economic growth and elimination of poverty. In conclusion, while Democracy is not
the best kind of governmental system, depending on the specifics of each nation, is sometimes better

Agriculture In Uganda Essay
Introduction
Sustainable consumption and production is defined by the United Nations Department of Economic
and Social Affairs (2014) as the use of services and related products, which respond to basic needs and
bring a better quality of life while minimising the use of natural resources as well as the emissions of
waste and pollutants so as not to jeopardise the needs of further generations. Over the last 25 years
many policies, strategies and programmes that support the food and agricultural sector in Uganda have
been put in place. This can be categorised into overarching national policies and specific agricultural
and rural development initiatives (FAO, 2013). The agricultural sector has the largest input into
Uganda s economy; therefore the two categories are highly inter related. Agriculture is the most
important sector of the economy, employing over 66 percent of the work force (UBoS, 2012).
Approximately 80 percent of Uganda s population lives in rural areas, and 66 percent are employed in
agriculture. Agriculture accounts for 24.1 percent of GDP and 51.9 percent of exports in 2010/11.
Most of Uganda s agricultural sector consists of small scale farming (FAO, 2013). Uganda is a country
endowed with a warm climate, abundant fertile land and regular rainfall, which provides one of the
best environments for agricultural production (ACORD, 2010).
Food security is the ability to provide adequate food for the household throughout the year, whether

Thesis: Louise Mallard immediately weeps after the news of her husband Brently s alleged death in a
railroad accident, subsequently Louise stares out of her bedroom window viewing the rebirth of
spring, revealing her new found independence after the loss of her spouse.

signified her sadness about the news, but instead the day was previously rainy and once she becomes
aware of his death she sees the blossoming spring. Louise Mallard s marriage was represented as a
rainy day, but once she became independent, her life became brighter and more free.
Topic Statement #3 The freedom that Louise Mallard feels after the death of Brently Mallard exposes
the isolation she felt in her marriage and how she never actually wanted to be married.
Body support (Feminist): From the motif of freedom it is seen that Louise was free after the death of

19th century it was almost a necessity for a women to be married, divorce was not an option because
at the time women depended on the man of the household to earn a living for the whole family. If the
roles were switched in this story, Brently would have been able to live freely and could have left
Louise because the patriarch has final say over family decisions. Louise was trapped in her own

Jack’s Transformation in Jack and the Beanstalk Essay
Jack and the Beanstalk Jack s Transformation
Jack and the Beanstalk is an example of a Buildungsroman. As the tale progresses, Jack evolves from
an immature person into a mature, self assertive person. While minor differences exist in various
versions of the tale, such as those between Joseph Jacobs and Horace Elisha Scudder s versions, the
tale can always be read as Jack s quest for maturity. Some critics, however, analyze the tale as one in
which Jack remains spoiled and immature. While they make points which support their claims, careful
analysis of the tale will reveal that Jack s struggle to grow up and to achieve maturity is representative
of the difficult process of adolescent (especially male) maturation and the ... Show more content on

A closer reading, though, reveals why entering into the Giant s land and stealing the Giant s treasures
is significant to the progress of Jack s maturity.
Jack does indeed begin as an immature, spoiled child. In Scudder s version, which is a moral version
containing a fairy who justifies Jack s decision to steal the Giant s treasures, Jack s mother blames him
for making her a beggar (23). In Jacobs version, which is a traditional version without the fairy, Jack s
inability to get a job shows his immaturity. As Martha Wolfenstein states, Jack is spoiled or lazy or
cannot hold a job or . . . has carelessly exhausted the family substance (243). When the cow, Milky
white, stops giving milk, Jack s mother sends him to the marketplace to sell the cow for money
(Jacobs 59). This venture is a very important first step in Jack s road to maturity, though it may not
seem so at the time. This is the first time that we know of Jack s mother ever sending him to the
market. According to Bruno Bettelheim, this first encounter with the world represents the end of
infancy for Jack. As Bettelheim reminds us, Jack s mother demands that he learn to make do with
what the outside world can offer (188). Now that Jack can no longer expect his mother to do
everything for him, he realizes that he must take steps toward maturity. As Bettelheim says, The child

Star Trek Influence On American Culture
In the 1960 s, it was common for families to spend their evenings around the television. They would
enjoy the broadcast media of the age, while also enjoying each other s company. This ritual became a
cornerstone of American family life. Television featured white families living the American dream;
something every American family aspired towards. Television was a vessel for entertainment, not for
challenging the status quo, but this would soon change for the better. On the evening of September 8,
1966, families with children gathered around their television, unaware that they would be witnessing
an event that would forever change mainstream American media. This event was the airing of Star
Trek. At the time it aired, America was immersed in the Civil Rights Movement. It was almost
impossible to imagine the country becoming a place where everybody, regardless of gender, race,
ethnicity, or beliefs, could be treated with equal respect. Star Trek was a crucial step towards giving
people hope, and allowing them to publicly see for the first time, the possibility of a better future. ...

How Does Hinton Use Symbols In The Outsiders
What is symbolism and how can it be used to enhance the storyline? S.E Hinton uses symbolism in the
novel, The Outsiders, in these ways. S.E. Hinton enhances the story with sunsets by making
something that Socs and Greasers can have the same opinion about, which is peacefulness. She also
uses the Greasers hair to make a difference between the Socs and the Greasers because each gang
prefers their hairstyles differently. The most important symbol S.E. Hinton uses it the blue Mustang,
she uses blue Mustangs to intensify the story and make it more exciting.

Food In Japanese Food
We as humans, see food as just a necessity of survival. As we intake our meal for the day, it is
uncommon for us to think past the taste or temperature of what is being placed in our mouth; we don t
pay attention to the depth of what the food on our plate could mean to not only us, but to others in the
world. Unlike what most may believe, food is an essential component of society. The consumption,
preparation and the values and customs that attribute to creation of these foods symbolize a variety of
thing in a culture. The way a culture prepares and eats its food shows us a glimpse of what this culture
may be like. The art that is involved in the process of a culture s breakfast, lunch and/or dinner
illustrates characteristics and the personality of that culture.
Though the Japanese are portrayed as fun, animated people in media, the Japanese are actual very
respectful, polite, structured people. This may not be something you can see in television, but if you
take a look at their meals and how they are prepared and consumed you can see how much honor is
put into the art of eating and how that symbolizes the personality of the culture at large. Before getting
into the consumption aspect of the meal, lets first look at how the food is prepared. Japanese meals are
highly structured events, and the different versions of a Japanese meal are defined by the relative
position of the major carbohydrate rice whose presence is culturally important, (Ashkenazi, Jacob

Colonial Culture And Spanish Influence During The Colonial...
During the colonial era, directly after the US Civil War, the European empires were absolute
authorities in Southeast Asia. Spanish influence during this time was centralized in the Philippines.
The geography of the region rendered the Philippines vulnerable to international manipulation and
political dissolution. Because the islands make political unity difficult, they have been targeted by
empires, and manipulated oppressive politics. Divisions in the Philippines cross many boundaries.
Race, class, religion, and geography all fed into international politics that heavily shaped foreign
influence on the island nation. The first organized religion that came to the Philippines was Islam.
This created one of the first great cultural chasms among the islands. When the Spanish landed on the
shores, Roman Catholicism spread like wildfire. As adopted as it was, Catholicism was much more on
the influential in the north, while the southern islands still mostly practiced Native religions or Islam.
During this time, the languages used to promote these various religions varied from the indigenous
languages, Spanish, Latin, Arabic, and hundreds more. This only served to drive wedges between the
population. Topping off the list for fissures in communication, a universal language was never
imposed on the Philippines. This meant that the majority of Filipinos never learned a word of spanish,
even at the height of the empire. This arguably caused a collapse in tradition and cultural

cushioned seats. Then we set off, leaving our comfort of home for a relaxing evening together. I was
hoping to get a chance at an elusive black bear. Unknowingly, this day became one of the most
memorable days in my life, for a small brown haired reason. The wind was weaving its way
harmoniously through the treetops at sunset. It created a mystifying ambiance within the forest. The
sun was gleaming through the tree branches, leaving its last little slivers of warmth before dropping
down below the hills for its lingering night s sleep. It almost seemed like a picturesque dream all
together with the hushed silence. After conversing about all of our potential hunting spots, we decided
to go up the steep knob where we had seen black bear sign before. We found a cozy spot right in front
of an elongated stump. It was humid that evening. When we finally had reached our desired area, we
were warmer than the black top on a hot summer s day. We took a few heavy layers off before we sat
down. This turned out great because it provided some much needed extra padding.
After we got settled in, we prepared for the certain places we suspected a bear would come from.

The Diet, The South Beach Diet
Introduction: We live in a society that is crazed in following latest diets whether it be the
Mediterranean diet, the Atkins diet, the South Beach diet etc. Each day there are new discoveries
displayed throughout the media regarding diets and lifestyles, yet for a society so obsessed in the
healthiest trend our statistics tend to show the flying numbers at which the population is diagnosed
with chronic diseases related to nutritional factors. Thus a sound nutrition is more essential than ever.
In the United States at least 4 of the 10 leading causes of are directly linked to what we eat. Majority if
not all of the chronic diseases have a nutritional/lifestyle component that if caught in time can be
reversed. Therefore the focus of the meal plan project was to gain an understanding of one s own
personal nutritional intake by measuring calories consumed throughout the course of one week. In
doing so the individual is made aware of any nutritional deficiencies or food excesses by the choices
made when selecting food. The individual is able to fully grasp their individual needs by analyzing the
data collected over their consumption of essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, lipids, water and
proteins. In the midst of attending class, work and club schedules, as well as inadequate sleep I
hypothesize that my overall nutrition will look be a downward spiral with insufficient calories and
deficiencies in minerals.

The Importance Of Executive Orders
Executive orders have been an influential part of America dating back to George Washington. There
are now more than 1300 numbered executive orders since the early 1900s. Not including the ones
unnumbered, lost, or not on record (Mott, Ph.D. Jonathan D.). Executive orders influence and affect
the executive branch, the Constitution, presidents, and our personal opinion. An executive order is a
presidential directive to a federal government agency or agencies that implement or interpret a federal
statute, a congressional provision, or a treaty (Magleby, David B). Executive orders do not require
congressional approval meaning the President does not have to run his order through Congress to get
it passed. However, Congress and Federal courts can annul any executive order that surpasses the
president s authority. The president expresses his executive authority by signing an executive order
that Congress wouldn t pass, which is why it s so controversial. Executive orders are controversial
because people believe it provides the executive branch with too much power, which contradicts the
Constitution. Many people believe Congress should be able to oversee the procedures and orders the
president is signing. Additionally, Checks and Balances and the Separation of Powers doctrine limits
the authority of each branch. However, in the Constitution, it says the president can issue an executive
order without congressional approval. For the president to issue such orders, it must come

Manuel Puig
The Kiss of The Spider Woman by Manuel Puig is centered on gender.
The notions of gender are Masculinity, and Femininity. They are argued by Manuel Puig as he
reverses the traditional ideas of male and female using Valentin and Molina, in order argue against the
idea that women were weak and men were strong. With the use of Valentin, a protester who carries all
masculine traits used in order to symbolize the traditional societal ideology of manhood and
masculinity. Also, he creates Molina, a homosexual put in prison for corrupting minors, in order to
portray the traditional female.
However, throughout the novel Puig deconstructs these roles in order to show the true persona of both

That being said, he has a feministic view of society. Moreover he views his relationship with Valentin
rather well as he considers himself to be the submissive female that transforms into the manipulator,
that tricks Valentin into eating the prison food, so that he can intentionally take care of him. However
Puig is making the reader realize that Molina is enduring an internal struggle. The struggle is that
Molina is stuck between telling the Warden the information that he is trying to get from Valentin, yet
insisting that Valentin tell him nothing of his political life. These combinations create the angst within
the character and the ultimate suspense of the piece as a whole. Perhaps both Valentin and Molina are
seeking to escape by explaining the movies they recall. The movies that Molina tells Valentin reveals
so much about Molina as he tends to cry each time he goes into the romantic part of the documentaries
because Molina lacks love in his life as he is trapped within himself. However when he offers his
body, so that is he free from this entrapment is when he makes love with Valentin. This shows us how
similar Molina s persona is to that of a woman. The similar trends between Molina and a woman is
best reflected when he talks about the love story of Leni. Leni betrays her own country because she
lacks love from a man. Leni turns into a powerful woman when she backstabs the soldier that was

Faith and Politics Essay
Faith and Politics
Nowadays, more so than ever before, religion plays a significant role in American presidential
elections. As citizens, our job is to examine that role and decide how it will affect our vote. The
Bush/Gore campaign has been very much influenced by religion. Joseph Lieberman, Gore s running
mate and the first Orthodox Jew to run for vice president on a major party ticket, has been extremely
vocal about his faith. Both George W. Bush and Al Gore, a Methodist and Baptist, respectively, have

the possibility that Lieberman s comments will rouse anti Semitism in the American public. The Pew

supported Lieberman and 30 percent did not. The statistics were virtually the same among those who

there doesn t appear to be any hostility against Lieberman. Examining the bigger picture, the poll

his references to his faith may be negatively pinned to his being Jewish changing our perception of

Justice Is The Standard Of True Justice
Through the issue of labor in Bangladesh, we can easily extract a point of view, what is fairness and
justice. In my opinion, according to Rawls s theory of justice, the standard of true justice, it s hard to
apply to the real world. We cannot rule out the influence of the real factors. Therefore, it is more
appropriate and useful to use Rawls justice as a guideline, although utterly extreme, ignoring the
subject matter of man, but more meaningful. An effective solution to the issue of labor rights in
Bangladesh, the current situation, in a way that is conducive to the majority of ordinary people in

Motivation In The Chesapeake Colonies
Motivation was the greatest determining factor behind the radically different societies being planted in
the Chesapeake, West Indies, and New England colonies. The force that drives a man is the desire of
that man s heart. Whether in search of riches or fame, adventure or an escape from tyranny, the spirit
of man is determined to seek its heart s desire at any cost. Greed is the inordinate desire to acquire or
possess far beyond the dictates of basic survival and comfort, including but not limited to an insatiable
drive to gain wealth, goods, objects of abstract value, and to obtain status, and power. The Chesapeake
Colony began as a private venture, financed by the Virginia Company, located in London. This was a
group of wealthy investors, whose only objectives were to increase their wealth, and to expand
England s holding around the world. These investors expected to find gold and silver, a passage to
Asia for a simpler trade route, and possible valuable products for trade or sale in Europe. In 1607,
under King James I, the Virginia Company was granted a charter, giving the company the right to
settle anywhere from roughly present day North Carolina to New York state. Aristocrats and
gentlemen, seeking their fortune, embarked on the adventure of their lifetime. They reached
Chesapeake Bay on April 26, 1607, and named their settlement, Jamestown in honor of the King. Ill

Associative Memory
The research says we can be moved by music at a personal level, to the point that musical melodies
evoke autobiographical information associated with it, and we get a strong feeling of knowing ,
especially if the music we heard is associated with our past. There seems to be a link between text and
music, since we remember the titles of music we listen to better than recalling the melody by reading
or hearing the title. In remembering vocals, we remember titles better than melodic cues. This can
suggest that music is encoded in semantic memory like text by the brain s perceptual memory system,
where meaning is encoded. Even if it is not directly related to semantic information, musical
information can also be associated with associative memory.

The Ethical Debate Concerning Cloning In the year that has elapsed since the announcement of Dolly

simple use of the word clone may have negative connotations, many people have resigned themselves
to the idea of cloning cows that produce more milk or using a cloned mouse for use in controlled
experimentation. However, the idea of cloning humans is a highly charged topic. Several authors have

A second argument for cloning starts with the idea of reproductive rights. This liberal view holds that
every individual is entitled to the right to have a child as long as the child born is unharmed. Some
philosophers point out that when talking about rights it is necessary to discern from whom these rights
should come. This question is difficult to answer because it either assumes natural, God given rights or
requires that the state ensure the right to reproduce or both. A third view says that cloning will provide
for the possibility of improvement by giving birth to children who are free of birth defects, because
when any two people create a child through sex there is the possibility for genetic defects. However,
since clones are the exact replicas of someone already alive, their genetic dispositions will have
already surfaced. Kass response is these three contexts are that they are all too passive. They ignore
the value of the process of bringing forth new life and look at the question in terms of results and
rights. He claims that we should look at this question from the anthropologic perspective that the
meaning behind the process of having a child is what s important. With many of the reproductive

Abstract This paper presents an efficient and reliable evolutionary based approach to solve the optimal
power flow(OPF) problem. The proposed approach employs differential evolution algorithm for
optimal settings of control variables. The proposed approach is examined and tested on the standard
IEEE 30 bus test system with fuel cost minimization as objective. The proposed approach results are
compared with the results reported in the literature. The results show the effectiveness and robustness
of the proposed approach.

I. INTRODUCTION
In the past two decades, the problem of optimal power flow (OPF) has received much attention. It is
of current interest of many utilities and it has been marked as one of the most operational needs. The
OPF problem solution aims to optimize a selected objective function via optimal adjustment of the
power system control variables, while at the same time satisfying various equality and inequality
constraints.

Dictatorship In George Orwell s Animal Farm
A Dictatorship is a form of government that forces an innocent and gullible society to worship a
mighty ruler. In George Orwell s famous book, Animal Farm, dictatorship proved to be the root of all
evil which evidently started a rebellion to form a republic; but later the republic had collapsed and
soon turned into tyranny. The animal republic was slowly collapsing due to four different propaganda
techniques in the story. First, it was the non implemented ideas from the higher power, which helped
the downfall of the republic, causing the animals to work harder for the ruler s benefit and not
themselves. Next, the absence of opposition to breaking the law helped kill the republic, moreover,
saying that the head of the government can change laws at his own will without the consent of others.
Penultimately, another feature for the decline in the animal republic was the extreme gullibility of the
animals, that consequently made the ruler a god to the dumb citizens. Finally, the dictator got too
greedy, eventually making the economic system drop immensely and starve all the citizens. Gullibility
from citizens is what helps a leader gain too much power and causes an endless loop of horrible
leadership; this could be prevented if the citizens had more common sense.
When a politician or ruler in any form of government promises wonderful things in the world, people
tend to believe all of it, but in the animal republic, a lot of promised ideals were never implemented.

Disadvantages Of Disaster Risk
Disaster risk indicates the possibility of adverse effects in the future. It originates from the
collaboration of social and environmental processes, from the mixture of natural hazards and the
vulnerabilities of exposed elements.
Due to increases in the exposure of persons and assets, the brutality of the impacts of disasters
depends strongly on the level of exposure and vulnerability in the affected area, and proof indicates
that risk has increased worldwide largely. For example, long term increases in economic losses from
weather and climate related disasters is caused by increasing exposure (IPCC 2012). There have been
limited decreases in vulnerability as a result of, for instance, better building standards and compliance,
but these reducing effects are geographically rough and there are many examples of increased
vulnerability, mostly in large urban centres and in developing countries. This has created new risk and
potential disaster losses mainly at the local and community level with the poor and demoted, marginal
populations, women and children, and those dependent on single sector economies suspiciously
affected.
Exposure:
Exposure refers to the portfolio of essentials in an area in which hazard events may occur. Later, if
population and economic resources were not located in potentially dangerous settings, there would be
no problem of disaster risk. Exposure is a required, but not enough, factor of risk. It is possible to be
exposed but not vulnerable (for

Discipline Should Not Become Child Abuse
Every year more than 3 million reports of children getting abuse are made in the United States
involving more than 6 million children. 1,640 children die as a result of child abuse, between four and
five children a day. Many parents don t realize that their way of disciplining is actually considered
abusing the child. Situation s like this happen not just in the United States but everywhere and
anywhere either by parents, daycares, school, etc. Discipline should never become child abuse. All
parents discipline their children by teaching them appropriate ways to behave. It obviously takes takes
time and patience. Knowing that discipling is to teach your children can guide you in deciding how to
react to their misbehavior. It is a parent s job to discipline their child so that the child grows up
knowing what is acceptable behavior and what is not. Parent s can consider what it is that they need to
learn from the situation. For example, if the 11 year old is hitting her younger sister when she get s

Spinoza s Philosophy Of God
Spinoza s most famous and provocative idea is that God is not the creator of the world, but that the
world is part of God. According to him, God is an absolutely infinite being, that is, substance
consisting of infinite attributes, each of which expresses eternal and infinite essence. Spinoza believed
that everything that exists is God. However, he did not hold the converse view that God is no more
than the sum of what exists. God had infinite qualities, of which we can perceive only two, thought
and extension. Hence God must also exist in dimensions far beyond those of the visible world. He
derived an ethic from fundamental principles, which were closely linked to his view of God or nature

We mean the philosophy of Spinoza, a man whose very life is a picture of that moral purity and
intellectual indifference to the transitory charms of this world, which is the constant longing of the
true Vedanta philosopher... comparing the fundamental ideas of both we should have no difficulty in
proving that, had Spinoza been a Hindu, his system would in all probability mark a last phase of the
Vedanta philosophy. Striking similarities between Vedanta and the system of Spinoza Brahman, as
conceived in the Upanishads and defined by Sankar is clearly the same as Spinoza s Substantia

Accounting Career Research Paper
I am an accountant at Christensen Financial where I have been employed for the past nine years. I
have been in the accounting field for the past fifteen years and it happened by accident. I did not
choose to be an accountant however through various jobs it chose me and I took the ball and ran with
it. In my youth, I did not have an end goal regarding a career, I just knew I wanted a job that could
give me the opportunity to move out of my parent s home and allow me to take care of myself. As I
started working I was able to advance from a job to a career, using each opportunity as a stepping
stone, I went from cashier to accounts receivable specialist, to office manager/bookkeeper, to land at
Christensen Financial as their accountant. It was validating to learn that my personality type of ISTJ,
which stands for Introverted, Senor, Thinker, Judgers, is in line with accounting ... Show more content

After high school I went straight to work and I did not continue with college until years later when I
was working at Christensen Financial. I knew I loved what I was doing and I was making a decent
wage doing it however I was in fear of the unknown and not having the extra layer of protection of
having my Bachelor s Degree to stand out from others, if I was to ever be in the job market again. I
never want to be told we cannot hire you as you do not have the education requirements. After taking
GEB 3003 class I am glad I have decided to obtain my Bachelor s Degree, as I realize how hard it is to
be in the market competing with so many candidates especially with how far technology has advanced
and how it continues to advance. I have chosen to stay the course and continue in the accounting
industry and I feel this would be a great career choice for others because there are many opportunities
which I have learned including the ability to grow your career beyond a Bachelor s Degree, stability
with great working conditions, and an excellent

Analysis Of Elizabeth Bowen s The Demon Lover
Gogri 10 Elizabeth Bowen: The Writings of War Jay Gogri Sr. Marlene Mucha, S.S.J British
Literature February 10, 2016 Elizabeth Bowen: The Writings of War What forces a person to write? It
could be feelings, situations, or even experiences. Writers such as George Orwell and Sylvia Plath
influenced the world with their writing. As a major writer in the Blitz era, Elizabeth Bowen wrote her
experiences in the war. Using the atmosphere and the surroundings as a source of her writing,
Elizabeth created many different novels and short stories that played on the emotions of the people.
One major short story, The Demon Lover, displayed the Blitz as a tool for devastation. Although
Elizabeth Bowen s The Demon Lover depicts a mysterious and eerie atmosphere full of ghosts, it also
portrays war as a destructive and catastrophic force. Born on June 7, 1899, Elizabeth Dorothea Cole
Bowen, formally known as Elizabeth Bowen, was a major British novelist and short story writer. The
year 1899 was, the eve of what has been called by many the century of total war.?[endnoteRef:1]
Bowen spent most of her childhood in Dublin. Her father, due to certain illnesses, died when she was
the age of seven. Similarly, her mother suffered a terrible death. Elizabeth then lived with her relatives
on the Kentish Coast. As a writer, she wanted to write about her feelings, the surrounding atmosphere,
and the perplexity of war. Elizabeth Bowen described war, ? . . . more as a

My Counseling Goals
My first goal was to be able to use basic counseling skills within my counseling sessions and working
on learning more about creating appropriate treatment plans on my own. I did quite a bit of reading of
books, such as treatment planners and also met with both of the Post Docs at my site to learn how they
approach treatment planning. I was able to get some good insight on how my approach may differ
from others and that this is okay. I learned that in this journey it is very important to know what
theoretical orientation you are using to think about change.
In order to measure the progress of this goal, I have worked to develop a better understanding of the
intake/interviewing process here at the PRACTICE and have been reviewing basic counseling ...

Depression and Anxiety group at the PRACTICE). This has been a very interesting experience and has
been very beneficial for me. I am also going to get an opportunity to facilitate the Young Adult Group
for a few weeks while someone else will be on vacation next month. In order to measure the progress
of this goal, I have reviewed my group counseling textbook from last semester and watch videos that
were recommended based on Yalom s group teachings for about one hour every two weeks thus far. I
have investigated the 11 curative factors so that I could write appropriate group formatted notes. Also,
I have joined a research project at our clinic related to individual and group tracking that will better
our clinics group program. I have worked with one of our Post Docs and my undergraduate supervisee
to explore how group outcomes and tracking can be implemented in a clinic, such as the PRACTICE.
The expected outcome was that I would understand the process group dynamics and the 11 curative
factors further. I have done so this far and am continuing to better understand what it would mean to
track group experience in my current research project at the clinic. This also has helped me as a
counselor in training to see if what I am doing is working within the group setting. By doing my own
research I can see, which measures work best within the group setting and

  • 2. A Summary Of Cora Unashamed The short story Cora Unashamed by Langston Hughes is about an African American woman who works for an established white family. Cora is their housekeeper and looks after their youngest daughter Jessie. Cora lost her only child soon after it was born so the Studevant s daughter, Jessie, became like a daughter to Cora. As Jessie grows, she falls and love and becomes pregnant. Cora encourages her love and her pregnancy. However, Jessie mother refuses to allow her daughter to have the child and Jessie has an abortion. Jessie eventually dies of grief. At her funeral, Cora s increasing anger finally is voiced. She cries, They killed you, honey. They killed you and your child. I told em you loved it, but they didn t care. They killed it before it was... (Langston, 7). Cora is removed from the funeral by force and she gathers her belongings and leaves the Studevants for good. This paper will discuss the possible consequences of Cora s outburst and whether it was worth it to express herself so abruptly. Although Cora waiting until most of the funeral was over, her uproar still took place while the Studevant s home held mourning family and friends. Cora allowed her feeling, as just as they may be, to overwhelm her and to cloud her mind. The very nature of her speech was spontaneous. We can see this because her comments are directed toward Jessie, not her mother, and not those who attended the funeral. Cora is overcome with greif and anger, which causes her to act out. They ... Key issues? Root problems? What do you think Daniel should do? What do you think Karla should do? Create your discussion using the 4 key steps of a Case Study: Step 1: Identify surface problems, Step 2: Ask Why Why to get root problem, Step 3: Generate solutions, and Step 4: Take action or make recommendations. Provide solid support for those recommendations. The Case Study 7.2 Karla, African American Salesperson Step 1: Identify surface problems The treatment of Karla by her coworkers is the main surface problem because she seemed to be avoided by her coworkers who do not invite her to social gatherings after work. I assume that she is not treated as a social buddy may be because she is African American or may be it could be a result of her work ethic. It is the job of the manager (Daniel) to address this issue immediately before it goes far, to avoid creating an unfriendly or/and hostile work environment that might affect the productivity. Step 2: Ask Why Why to get root problem There is no doubt that the root problem is stereotypical cultural that does not allow the social mixing of different races inside and outside of work environment. The cause might be a lack of Diversity training that could probably give and allow employees to have open mind and wider work views ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Particularly, the summer of 1967, nicknamed the Summer of Love, had widespread political impacts, even though that was not the intention for some participants. With the emergence of LSD and new optimistic, loving mindsets, hippie culture shaped peoples actions in regards to prominent issues in the years following, such as the Vietnam War and the War on Drugs. The Grateful Dead were not famous when they began playing the Acid Tests, but as LSD and the Acid Tests grew in popularity, the band s own popularity grew with them. The members of the band itself had not used psychedelics (other than marijuana) before they started playing at the Acid Tests, but they quickly became immersed in the culture thanks to those around them. Owsley Stanley, a Grateful Dead soundman and underground chemist, would synthesize his own LSD to give out free samples outside of Grateful Dead concerts so no one felt left out of the experience (Gitlin). Pairing LSD with music was all anyone ever knew because of the Acid Tests and made the experience what it was. Michael J. Kramer describes the culture surrounding the Grateful Dead in his book The Republic of Rock as, a way for strangers to establish bonds of affiliation and connection through risk taking particularly through drug use and electronically generated chaos (Kramer 35). The Acid Tests reflected a popular opposition to the mainstream. LSD was marketed as a daring, exciting substance and more people became eager to try it, especially alongside the Grateful Dead. This direct pairing of the band with drugs through the Acid Tests is the first way that the Grateful Dead directly influenced the proliferation of LSD and continued to do so even as political views began to be associated with the ... And this world of imagery contributes to the prevailing sentiment of pain and suffering and unpleasantness. There is no shortage of imagery in the play; this is for certain. Critic Caroline Spurgeon in Shakespeare s Imagery and What it Tells Us sorts through the plethora of imagery in the play: The main image in Othello is that of animals in action, preying upon one another, mischievous, lascivious, cruel or suffering, and through these, the general sense of pain and unpleasantness is much increased and kept constantly before us. Wilson in his book of literary criticism, On the Design of Shakespearean Tragedy, discusses the influence of the imagery of the play: It has indeed been suggested that the logic of events in the play and of Othello s relation to them implies Othello s damnation, and that the implication is pressed home with particular power in the imagery. This last amounts to interpreting the suggestions of the imagery as a means of comment by the author the analogy would be the choruses of Greek tragedy. It is true that the play contains many references to heaven and hell and devils. as Wilson Knight has pointed out. But Mr. Knight has wisely refrained from drawing the conclusion that Shakespeare means thus to comment upon Othello s ultimate fate. • 7. Memory and Fortune in the Odyssey When scholars analyze themes of meaning in the Homeric epic The Odyssey, a common area of focus is the significance of memory and forgetting to the story. One interpretation of the text poses that characters being able to remember Odysseus brings about fortunate consequences for the protagonist, while forgetting about him or his deeds leads to negative ones. However, the forgetting of Odysseus s transgressions by the suitor s fathers at the end of the epic contradicts this as Odysseus is spared through it. It is through the juxtaposition of Athena s requests for memory and forgetting, respectively, at the beginning and conclusion of the epic that show the retention of the memory of Odysseus by others is not inherently beneficial nor detrimental to him. Rather, memory is a tool: a double edged sword that can either improve or worsen his condition based on circumstance. What is inherent, however, is the tendency of events to progress, albeit slowly and circuitously, towards the inevitable homecoming of Odysseus, his retaking of the seat of power, and the return to normalcy on Icatha. Memory and forgetting merely serve as a means to achieve that fated end, rather than being objects of meaning themselves. That the remembrance of Odysseus by other characters helps him out later on in the epic is certainly supported by events that transpire in the first half of the story. The action begins with Athena pleading with her father Zeus to release Odysseus from his two decade ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Agriculture In Uganda Essay Introduction Sustainable consumption and production is defined by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (2014) as the use of services and related products, which respond to basic needs and bring a better quality of life while minimising the use of natural resources as well as the emissions of waste and pollutants so as not to jeopardise the needs of further generations. Over the last 25 years many policies, strategies and programmes that support the food and agricultural sector in Uganda have been put in place. This can be categorised into overarching national policies and specific agricultural and rural development initiatives (FAO, 2013). The agricultural sector has the largest input into Uganda s economy; therefore the two categories are highly inter related. Agriculture is the most important sector of the economy, employing over 66 percent of the work force (UBoS, 2012). Approximately 80 percent of Uganda s population lives in rural areas, and 66 percent are employed in agriculture. Agriculture accounts for 24.1 percent of GDP and 51.9 percent of exports in 2010/11. In Jacobs version, which is a traditional version without the fairy, Jack s inability to get a job shows his immaturity. As we intake our meal for the day, it is uncommon for us to think past the taste or temperature of what is being placed in our mouth; we don t pay attention to the depth of what the food on our plate could mean to not only us, but to others in the world. Unlike what most may believe, food is an essential component of society. The consumption, preparation and the values and customs that attribute to creation of these foods symbolize a variety of thing in a culture. The way a culture prepares and eats its food shows us a glimpse of what this culture may be like. The art that is involved in the process of a culture s breakfast, lunch and/or dinner illustrates characteristics and the personality of that culture. Though the Japanese are portrayed as fun, animated people in media, the Japanese are actual very respectful, polite, structured people. Spanish influence during this time was centralized in the Philippines. The geography of the region rendered the Philippines vulnerable to international manipulation and political dissolution. Because the islands make political unity difficult, they have been targeted by empires, and manipulated oppressive politics. Divisions in the Philippines cross many boundaries. Race, class, religion, and geography all fed into international politics that heavily shaped foreign influence on the island nation. The first organized religion that came to the Philippines was Islam. This created one of the first great cultural chasms among the islands. • 24. The Importance Of Executive Orders Executive orders have been an influential part of America dating back to George Washington. There are now more than 1300 numbered executive orders since the early 1900s. Not including the ones unnumbered, lost, or not on record (Mott, Ph.D. Jonathan D.). Executive orders influence and affect the executive branch, the Constitution, presidents, and our personal opinion. An executive order is a presidential directive to a federal government agency or agencies that implement or interpret a federal statute, a congressional provision, or a treaty (Magleby, David B). Executive orders do not require congressional approval meaning the President does not have to run his order through Congress to get it passed. However, Congress and Federal courts can annul any executive order that surpasses the president s authority. The president expresses his executive authority by signing an executive order that Congress wouldn t pass, which is why it s so controversial. Executive orders are controversial because people believe it provides the executive branch with too much power, which contradicts the Constitution. Many people believe Congress should be able to oversee the procedures and orders the president is signing. Additionally, Checks and Balances and the Separation of Powers doctrine limits the authority of each branch. However, in the Constitution, it says the president can issue an executive order without congressional approval. For the president to issue such orders, it must come ... The struggle is that Molina is stuck between telling the Warden the information that he is trying to get from Valentin, yet insisting that Valentin tell him nothing of his political life. These combinations create the angst within the character and the ultimate suspense of the piece as a whole. Perhaps both Valentin and Molina are seeking to escape by explaining the movies they recall. Motivation In The Chesapeake Colonies Motivation was the greatest determining factor behind the radically different societies being planted in the Chesapeake, West Indies, and New England colonies. The force that drives a man is the desire of that man s heart. Greed is the inordinate desire to acquire or possess far beyond the dictates of basic survival and comfort, including but not limited to an insatiable drive to gain wealth, goods, objects of abstract value, and to obtain status, and power. The Chesapeake Colony began as a private venture, financed by the Virginia Company, located in London. This was a group of wealthy investors, whose only objectives were to increase their wealth, and to expand England s holding around the world. These investors expected to find gold and silver, a passage to Asia for a simpler trade route, and possible valuable products for trade or sale in Europe. This question is difficult to answer because it either assumes natural, God given rights or requires that the state ensure the right to reproduce or both. A third view says that cloning will provide for the possibility of improvement by giving birth to children who are free of birth defects, because when any two people create a child through sex there is the possibility for genetic defects. In George Orwell s famous book, Animal Farm, dictatorship proved to be the root of all evil which evidently started a rebellion to form a republic; but later the republic had collapsed and soon turned into tyranny. The animal republic was slowly collapsing due to four different propaganda techniques in the story. First, it was the non implemented ideas from the higher power, which helped the downfall of the republic, causing the animals to work harder for the ruler s benefit and not themselves. Next, the absence of opposition to breaking the law helped kill the republic, moreover, saying that the head of the government can change laws at his own will without the consent of others. Penultimately, another feature for the decline in the animal republic was the extreme gullibility of the animals, that consequently made the ruler a god to the dumb citizens. Finally, the dictator got too greedy, eventually making the economic system drop immensely and starve all the citizens. Gullibility from citizens is what helps a leader gain too much power and causes an endless loop of horrible leadership; this could be prevented if the citizens had more common sense. • 39. Disadvantages Of Disaster Risk Disaster risk indicates the possibility of adverse effects in the future. It originates from the collaboration of social and environmental processes, from the mixture of natural hazards and the vulnerabilities of exposed elements. Due to increases in the exposure of persons and assets, the brutality of the impacts of disasters depends strongly on the level of exposure and vulnerability in the affected area, and proof indicates that risk has increased worldwide largely. For example, long term increases in economic losses from weather and climate related disasters is caused by increasing exposure (IPCC 2012). There have been limited decreases in vulnerability as a result of, for instance, better building standards and compliance, but these reducing effects are geographically rough and there are many examples of increased vulnerability, mostly in large urban centres and in developing countries. This has created new risk and potential disaster losses mainly at the local and community level with the poor and demoted, marginal populations, women and children, and those dependent on single sector economies suspiciously affected. Exposure: Exposure refers to the portfolio of essentials in an area in which hazard events may occur. Spinoza believed that everything that exists is God. However, he did not hold the converse view that God is no more than the sum of what exists. This also has helped me as a counselor in training to see if what I am doing is working within the group setting. By doing my own research I can see, which measures work best within the group setting and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
