The Four African Americans Artist
Enslaved as well as free African Americans pursued opportunities to create poetry, paintings,
sculpture, and other forms of artistic self expression. Many, of course, had to create their opportunities
to create. In my paper I will compare and contrast a few artist lives and works of art. The four African
Americans artist I will talk about are Robert S. Duncanson, Edward M. Bannister, Mary Edmonia
Lewis, and Henry Ossawa Tanner three free born and one a freed slave.
The tensions between an art that referred to people s social conditions and an art that transcended race
and class politics are represented by the works of two artists active during the 1860s and 1870s:
sculptor Mary Edmonia Lewis and landscape painter Robert S. Duncanson.
Mary Edmonia Lewis s father was a free African American and her mother a Chippewa Indian. She
was an exhibitor at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876 and was the first African
American and Native American woman in the United Sates to gain widespread recognition as an artist
and also the first African American and Native American in the United States to gain an international
reputation as a sculptor. Lewis studied art at Oberlin College, independently in Boston, Massachusetts,
and among American and British expatriates in Italy. She used the artistic conventions of
neoclassicism to create powerful marble statuary on the subjects of black American emancipation,
female oppression, and Native Americans. Lewis s work is

Distinc Mise En Scene Analysis
This particular scene shows two types of proxemics distances, social distance and impersonal
business/casual social gatherings distance. Although this is a long shot, you can see the difference
between the two groups of boys based off of how close they stand to each other. The two teams of
boys are standing with each other at a social distance; they are friends and if they reached out their
arms they could easily touch one another. Both teams are standing close enough to engage in two way
communication, but they are by no means friendly with each other. The distances give off the
emotional impact that these teams are against one another. This scene from The Longest Yard also
shows how proxemics distances can give a clue to the relationships amongst people. In this frame, the
convicts football team is cheering and chanting together the night before their big game against the
guards. The personal distance between all of the team members at this time shows how they have such
a strong relationship. At this moment, the team goes to break the personal space barriers because they
have such a strong sense of comradery and unity as a team. This frame shows that the team has come a
long way from when they first started.

these elements, films would lack the underlying structure of symbolic meaning that contributes to the
storyline as a whole. Both The Sandlot and The Longest Yard contained many scenes with successful

Pecola
Winter came and a troubled young black girl Pecola is insecure about the color of her skin, infatuated
with lighter skin, blue eyes, and long yellow hair. Pecola grew up in a house as a victim of violence
and molestation by her father Cholly Breedlove. Her mother Pauline is also insecure about her skin
color. Pecola also had a brother Sammy, who also suffered insecurities and often ran away from home.
The MacTeer sisters, Frieda and Claudia are friends of the troubled 11 year old Pecola. They often
tried to protect her from fights and bullying from other kids at school, chanting about her blackness
and abused mentally and physically. She suffered from her father who slept naked at night, which
added insult to injury.

no one calls her by that name since Pecola must call her mother Mrs. Breedlove. As Pecola and Mrs.

Mrs. Breedlove told the little pink and yellow girl, Hush, don t worry none (109) because she doesn t

The Republican Party Or Grand Old Party
The Origin, The Change, The Present
The Republican party or Grand Old Party (GOP), for over 150 years, has maintained itself as a major
political party within the United States of America. As a whole, the republican party follows the belief
of military build up ,less taxes, and more importantly, a limited government. However, throughout
recent years there has been an influx of conservative values being spread throughout the GOP. These
values include harsh stances against: homosexuality, immigration, and abortion. This recent
conservative trend has caused many to see the party as out of date. Ironically, it has not always been
like this, as the party was once what would be defined as liberal . These liberal views included support
of conservatism and universal health care(http://www.marketwatch.com/story/four things republicans
used to believe 2011 07 18). So, what happened? In short, the conservative influx in the 1950s would
lead to this drastic change of views, which would lead us to today s far right republican party. In order

The Origins Of the Republican Party
The GOP would begin in the early 1850 s as an Antislavery party in do part to the Kansas Nebraska
Act of 1854 . Within this act entailed whether or not slavery could be permitted on nebraska land by
settlers and entrepreneurs who wanted to relocate there .
This in turn allowed each territory to decide the issue of slavery on the basis of popular sovereignty

Characters In Alice Munro s Differently
In Alice Munro s short story Differently, the main character Georgia recounts memories of Maya and
their fallout when she visits her friend s widowed husband many years later. Upon her visit, her mind
is flooded with memories of friendship, infidelity, and broken trust which inevitably disconnected her
from Maya and Ben (Georgia s husband). Throughout the text, the author highlights the main
character s inability to filter through many details as she describes the end of various relationships
following Maya s betrayal. The author s thorough description of settings, characters, and events
emphasizes Georgia s difficulty in focusing on what details of her life are important, as most of them
seem important to her.
The opening words of Alice Munro s Differently introduce the style the author uses throughout the
short story: Georgia once took a creative writing course, and what the instructor told her was: Too
many things. Too many things going on at the same time; also too many people [...] What do you want
us to pay attention to? Think (Munro 1). These lines echo in the mind of the reader as they dive further
into the text, reading about too many things and meeting too many people.
Munro introduces Georgia, Raymond, Maya, Ben, Harvey, Anne, Hilda and her former creative
writing instructor all within the first few pages. The role of each character (aside from the creative
writing instructor) is clouded with the details of their physical appearance or small mannerisms.

Australian Freedom Riders
In 1964 there was a protest outside the US consulate in Canberra that two thousand people had
attended to protest about racial segregation and civil rights in the United States. Many people of the
general public stated things such as if protesters are going to so much trouble why not protest about
racial segregation within our own country. These comments had lead to the making of our own
Australian Freedom Riders which were based on the American Freedom Riders who were making a
difference with civil rights and discrimination in America. They travelled across America to raise
awareness of the issues when it came to the African American s rights and they helped achieve
equality. The Australian Freedom Riders helped in achieving freedom for ... Show more content on

There was a saying at the time that racism did no longer exist in Australia only in other countries such
as America but after this evidence was released soon it was recognised that racism did in fact exist in
Australia. The Australian Freedom Riders had made worldwide news about their travels and
experiences.
Once the group had finished visiting these towns and had ended their journey Charles Perkins reported
what had happened to a crowd of approximately two hundred at the 1965 Federal Council for the
Advancement of Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islands conference in Canberra. The responses after this
conference were mainly positive and because of Charles Perkins the NSW Aboriginal Welfare Board
had announced they would spend sixty five thousand pounds on more housing in Moree for the
Aboriginals. The Australian Freedom Riders had caused many debates all across Australia which had
then caused the 1967 Referendum which got rid of a law in the constitution that had stated laws can be
made for the people of any race, other than the Aboriginal race in any state, for whom it is deemed
necessary to make special laws . The law was changed and removed the section other than the
Aboriginal race this was a positive change as it meant laws could be made in favour of the Aboriginals

Summary Of The Episode Remains To Be Seen
Goffman (1963) refers to stigma as being a disorder that an individual carries, it is a mark of shame in
which something unusual or bad about the person is exposed. When people express an impression to
the manner they want to present their self, they play a virtual identity to avoid exposing their actual
identity because it might be stigmatized. Goffman (1963) also mentions when people are stigmatized
they worry about how others see them, which is the similar to how we feel when performing a certain
role to keep what we consider normal people from finding out the truth about our shame a
characteristic of what we think is abnormal/weird to other people. Glacalone Rosenfeld (1989)
compare social situations to interviews, an approach where an individual selects the perception and
behavior to reflect their good qualities to the person they are performing for. Despite trying to give a
reasonable impersonation of one self, people run the risk of being discreditable, which is a stigma that
is not readily perceivable to others. Allan (2014) also discusses that some people are already
discredited, when normal people are readily aware about a person s stigma as they try to pretend that
they do not notice, or the person who is already stigmatized plays it off to show or perceive their

Pasadena City College Internship Report
During my past three years at Pasadena City College I was able to explore courses and narrow my
interests in a way that may not have been possible at an expensive university. While I have always had
an interest in the technical and scientific disciplines, out of high school I was unfocused. I wanted to
be a part of something that impacted my community in a positive manner. When first looking into
careers I never considered a technical based career, mainly due to family career history. However, as I
began to excel in math and MESA organizers got more involved in my success I realized there was a
space for my interest in STEM.
Throughout my academic endeavor I have earned a spot in two very diverse internships. My first
internship was with LADOT. It focused on my individual skills and how to apply them to singular
tasks. I was primarily involved in GIS mapping and worked alongside traffic and computer engineers.
Though this was an informative and rigorous internship I found my true inspiration in my engineering
professor at Pasadena City College. Dr. Arzoumanian is a successful civil engineer with practice in the
private sector. After discussing with her the positive experiences that she has had I knew that I wanted

The internship took a different perspective, it was a collaborative effort that brought people of various
disciplines together to accomplish a greater task. I worked with a collaborative of students with majors
ranging from film and geography to computer science and mechanical engineers. To be working with
a group of intelligent and civil minded people made the process more productive. Having experienced
students working together allowed us to learn from each others strengths and ultimately accomplish a

The Effect Of Wind Energy On Renewable Energy
Everyday witnesses increased demand in energy, which requires further investigations on available
sources of energy, especially renewable energy that was highlighted in the last decades as per
environmental and sustainability demand. Wind energy is one of the cleanest energies that received
the attention of researchers and investors because of its availability with low running cost. According
to the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA, 2015), wind energy is currently the fastest growing
source of electricity in the world, and wind power investment worldwide is expected to expand three
fold, from about $18 billion in 2006 to $60 billion in 2016.
Although the use of wind energy backs to more than hundreds of years (the wind wheel of Heron of
Alexandria in the first century AD is the earliest known instance of using a wind driven wheel to
power a machine (Drachmann, 1961; Lohrmann, 1995)), it is yet an immature and growing
technology. In recent years, coastal and offshore wind turbines are growing fast, as an attractive means
for clean energy production. Due to the nature of the wind in offshore regions, that are powerful and
more uniform than inland winds, offshore wind turbines can produce energy effectively (Musial and
Butterfield, 2006). It should be noted that the extracted energy is proportional to the cubic of the wind
speed which means an increase in wind speed has a significant influence on the amount of produced
energy. In addition, it is more cost effective to place

How 5-HT modulates NMDA receptor activation is a key...
How 5 HT modulates NMDA receptor activation is a key question of interest. Despite being cation
channels, NMDA receptors have non linear, voltage dependent conductance (Mayer and Westbrook,
1987). This property results from the voltage dependent Mg2+ blockade of the receptor channels
(Mayer et al., 1984; Nowak et al., 1984) and thus leads to the negative slope conductance in the
current voltage relationship (i.e. I V curve; Nowak et al., 1984; Flatman et al., 1983; MacDonald et al.,
1982). Because of the voltage dependent conductance, NMDA receptor activation generates intrinsic
voltage oscillations in spinal neurons of rat (Hochman et al., 1994a; Hochman et al., 1994b) and
amphibian (Sillar and Simmers, 1994a; Sillar and Simmers, 1994b) ... Show more content on

In the cord preparations with TTX treatment, 5 HT application reintroduced the negative slope
conductance in the I V curve of healthy motoneurons failing to show the negative slope conductance
in the presence of NMDA alone (Schmidt and Jordan, 2000). Moreover, in other motoneurons
showing the negative slope conductance in the presence of NMDA alone, 5 HT caused the negative
slope conductance to shift toward the hyperpolarizing direction, which could be reversed by 5 HT
antagonist mianserin (Schmidt and Jordan, 2000). Reducing the bath concentration of Mg2+ also
mimicked the hyperpolarizing shift of the negative slope conductance by 5 HT (Schmidt and Jordan,
2000). Via 5 HT2 receptor activation, protein kinase C (PKC) can enhance the hyperpolarizing shift of
the negative slope conductance in the I V curve of NMDA receptors and also reduce Mg2+ blockade
of the receptor channels (Blank et al., 1996; Chen and Huang, 1992). Therefore, the effect of 5 HT on
the negative slope conductance of NMDA receptors may result from reduction of Mg2+ blockade of
the receptor channels. Even more interestingly, Li and Zhuo (1998) discovered that 5 HT can induce
the transformation of silent glutamatergic synapses into functional ones in some rat superficial dorsal
horn neurons (Li and Zhuo, 1998). They detected silent synapses, which are excitatory postsynaptic
currents mediated by NMDA receptors, by depolarizing the cells from 70 mV to +40 mV (Li and
Zhuo, 1998). However, 5 HT

The Politics Of The United States
In the United States, elections can be the deciding factor in ones political career. In recent times,
congressional elections have not only become increasingly important, but also more expensive. The
expense is often considered a result of modern times, however it results in many people being unable
to run for a political position. This begs the question of who might be running for a political position if
the price wasn t so high, would it be a more common person who relates more to the people. Often
incumbents, those currently in office, are able to edge out competitors because of money. The price of
elections can also affect issues that are covered by politicians. While its not too hard to fill the
requirements for becoming a senator or representative, most people are unable to run for election due
to the financial burden. In current times this leads to politicians caring less about issues and more on
their image, money, and reelection. This is because money is related to power so the more money one
has, the more powerful one is, and this also relates to reelection and image. During the 2012
congressional election senators, on average, raised $10,476,451 and representative, on average, raised
$1,689,580 (Costa). These numbers are the reason why congress is referred to as the millionaires club,
over half of the Senate and nearly half of the House are considered millionaires (Condon). This
amount is not something and average citizen would be able to come up with, so

Equal Pay Case
1. This action would not involve internal deception. Some may say that if the jobs are equal then they
should have equal pay. If this is true, I think that Job B should have a higher pay. This means that Job
A does not lose any pay because that there are more applicants, but that Job B has more alluring pay to
get more applicants. If this tactic is taken, the action does not benefit one at the expense of another.
This action would also follow the Golden Rule . If I was the manager, I would feel comfortable
making this action public. This shows transparency in the company, which is good externally and
internally. In this situation, we are paying for the job and not the person doing that job. That being

Ideally, the wages of the testing department at Firm B would raise. This is usually not an option for a
company. The second best option would be for the testing department employees from Firm A and B
get paid an average of the two firms. The more likely action would be to pay the Firm A employee the
same wage as the Firm B test department employees. Most people are glad to make it through a
merger, so a pay cut is better than being laid off. Because of the fat that mergers are difficult, any of
these plans of action are fair and a standard for this situation.
8. Company A should retain the childcare and elder care programs. It is unusual for a company to have
such programs. So if the company can afford to have them, it is a huge benefit to the employees to
retain the programs. There should be an option to opt out of the programs in exchange for some other
type of compensation.
9. I think it is unfair to require employees to donate or volunteer on their own time. A better way to
handle this situation is to have a company lead fundraiser for United Way. Another option could be
giving paid days/ hours off to employees that volunteer their time. Making employee give their time
and money could be seen as defeating the purpose of charity. It might make the company look worse if
someone found out that the only reason employees where donating or volunteering is because they

Section 4 presents the methodology employed for the analysis. Section 5 discusses the results and
finally section 6 summarizes and concludes the discussion. 2.0 Technological History of Ghanaian
Banks
Over time, technology has increased in importance in Ghanaian banks. Traditionally, banks have
always sought media through which they would serve their clients more cost effectively as well as
increase the utility to their clientele. Their main concern has been to serve clients more conveniently,
and in the process increase profits and competitiveness. Electronic and communications technologies
have been used extensively in banking for many years to advance agenda of banks
In Ghana, the earliest forms of electronic and communications technologies used were mainly office
automation devices. Telephones, telex and facsimile were employed to speed up and make more
efficient, the process of servicing clients. For decades, they remained the main information and
communication technologies used for transacting bank business.
Later in the 1980s, as competition intensified and the personal computer (PC) got proletarian,
Ghanaian banks begun to use them in back office operations and later tellers used them to service
clients. Advancements in computer technology saw the banks networking their branches and
operations thereby making the one branch philosophy a reality. Barclays Bank (Gh.) and Standard

The Use of Biometrics
There have been use of Biometrics which can be traced as far back to 500 BC, but where does its
future lay in the 21st century and beyond? Exactly what is Biometrics and its proposed applications;
will it truly be as useful or will it be a hindrance? Currently, which nations along with the international
corporations are in the market for such a medium and who are the pioneers, trying to advance
Biometrics; into something more streamlined? Will Biometrics truly have as much of an impact on the
digital industry as predicted? Or is it all hype? Lastly, what are the advantages and disadvantages
when applying Biometrics in today s world?
What do we define as biometrics, is it something which can be emulated by another being or is it
absolutely unique to one s self that it can never be copied and disturbed for others to use? By
definition, Biometrics is derived from the Greek words bio meaning life and metrics meaning to
measure. By today s standards, Biometrics uses cutting edge technologies to identify terrorists and
criminals. (Nadeau) Many revolutionary ideas regarding Biometrics have been based on ideas which
were originally conceived hundreds, maybe even thousands of years ago. Since the early days of man,
we have been practicing to distinguish other humans based on intrinsic physical or behavioral traits.
Early Babylonian and Chinese merchants kept records of: fingerprints, palm prints, and even
footprints to manage business transactions and census records.

What Is Mary Shelly s Personality In Frankenstein
Daughter, Wife, Mother, Author, this is Mary Shelly. You probably have herd of Mary Shelly because
of her very famous novel, Frankenstein. Shelly s life has had many ups and downs that I believe has
majorly contributed to the novel. Has she related her personality to the character Frankensteins
personality? She would not have been able to create many details in the story without using inspiration
from her memories, and things she has experienced in her own life. Does her life reflect how Victor

in the novel see him as hideous and ugly?
Mary Shelly was actually born as Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin on August 30, 1797 in London,
England. She was the daughter of a philosopher and political writer William Godwin. Sadly after
giving birth to Mary, her mother passed away. Shelly was left to be cared for by her father, William,

Parabolica Vs Hyperbola
Ziv Gabay Mr. Diaz 10 Algebra 2 5 June 2016 Parabola vs. Hyperbola Essay A parabola and a
hyperbola are two of the same, but also are very different. The definition of a conic section is a section

hyperbola. Each has its own place independently, but some things function very similar to one another.
But the graph you will get whether it be a parabola or a hyperbola, will always be relatively similar. In
a parabola, the curvature of the two lines is dictated by the focus point. The focus point is a set of
coordinates [usually (X,0) or (0,Y)] that, by slope, proportionally separate the two lines in a parabola.

Examples Of Contradictions In Fuzzy Logic
Contradictions in Fuzzy Logic
Kamp ([qtd. in Sauerland]) argue that it is absurd that p ∧ p has the same truth value as p ∧ ¬p if p is
0.5, and the latter statement cannot have a truth value of 0.5, becauses how could a logical
contradiction be true to any degree? (qtd. in Sauerland 187). Sauerland ([year]) however thinks that
this is not the case: if p contains a vague variable, the statement does not need to be a contradiction to
be intuitive, e.g. What I did was smart and not smart, or Bea is both tall and not tall are statements
which are contradictions, and they still make sense although they are vague (186). I agree that What I
did was smart and not smart makes sense in vagueness and fuzzy logic: this statement might be false,
or true, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The same holds for sentences like What I did was smart and not smart (cf. Sauerland ([citation?]), but
sentences like he is tall and not tall are different: in this case you cannot say that the person is tall in
some respects and not tall in other respects (except maybe when you argue that the person turns out to
be a child who is tall compared to other children but not tall compared to adults), but more commonly
you express an average height by this, which is between your personal crisp boundaries of tall and not
tall respectively. Still, both sentences He is nice and not nice and He is tall and not tall are of the form
p ∧ ¬p, and are not considered contradictions with a truth value of 0. But if you consider He is nice
and not nice as the person being nice and not nice in the same respect, then of course the contradiction
would be obviously present, in which case the truth value would indeed be 0 (I do not think that you
could interpret He is tall and not tall in a way such that its truth degree would be 0): it would then be
reasonable to interpret He is nice (in some respects) and not nice (in other respects) as rather p ∧ ¬q
than p ∧ ¬p, because the different contexts in which he is nice and not nice might be seen as concepts
which are not actually related, that is, the situations in

Toilet Training
There are some of the things that make potty training hard for kids with autism spectrum disorder and
one of the biggest, or most obvious, is the fact that many kids with ASD are more broadly
developmentally delayed and it certainly interferes with their learning in all domains, but there are
things that are more specific to ASD, such as communication difficulties. It is difficult to tell someone
that one needs to go potty if one is having trouble communicating (Kiddoo et al. 2006) and it is also
difficult for us to communicate to the child with autism what the importance of going potty is or what
they are supposed to do. Another thing is sensory issues and there is a lot of sensory stimulation and
input around the toileting routine. Some of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The book is a well researched supported intervention because it is very structured, straightforward, all
the procedures are laid out, and it is easy to take data and track progress. There are different
components in the toilet training procedure. First, we start off with having the child not wear diapers
anymore and transitioning them into underwear (Cocchiola, Martino, Dwyer, Demezzo, 2012). We
then put the child on a toileting schedule, so setting up a routine where every 20 or 40 minutes we are
taking the child to the toilet. Next, we increase their fluid intake by which the child will go to the
bathroom frequently (Cocchiola et al. 2012) and can practice what they are supposed to do and the
learning will increase as well. Furthermore, by increasing the fluid intake we are increasing the
probability that the child is going to go to the bathroom in the toilet and we are increasing the
probability that we are going to have a coincidence, so when we put the child on the toilet every 20
minutes, one of those times the child is finally going to go. Thus, giving us the desired behavior and
this is difficult because this is a behavior that we cannot prompt and we have to wait for it to happen at
the right time and then reinforce the child for it. So, we are trying to essentially create a lot of
probability that the child is going to go in the toilet when we take them and then reinforce them for it,
so a little bit of learning traction can happen. Additionally, there is a dry pants check where it is a
procedure where we check the child s pants in between their trips to the toilet and if the pants are dry
then we praise them for it, so that they have the idea that staying dry is the right

Dances With Wolves Analysis
I thought the movie Dances with Wolves was a good film. I think that this was a good film since it had
a good storyline. In addition, I had thought the movies was also very interesting. I thought it was
interesting as it showed me the communication barrier between Dunbar and the Indians, the Indians
lack of knowledge on weaponry, and the perception of Indians. I also thought it was a good film, since
I had also learned a few things from it. One of those things being the perception of Indians.
The movie gave me an insight on the relationship between the US and Indian relationships as it seems
as the USA did not like the Indians. It shows this with the perception of the Indians from the
comments the white people had made toward the Indians and ... Show more content on

I feel that this movie would be a historical fiction since the film does have some historical facts and
meaning. Some parts of the movie that show historical facts would be the perception of the Indians,
the few battles, and the customs of the Indians. These things cannot fictionalized, and would require
some research.
The treatment of the native people west of the Mississippi river in the time period following the civil
war was poor. The white people wanted the Indians to be exterminated. An example of this happened
in Colorado, when some Indian chiefs had sought peace and negotiation. In this negotiation, they had
army protection, however, they were killed in their sleep. The Indians were also treated poorly as they
suffered from the white Americans racism, their belief that they owned all the land, and paternalism.
The forces at work on both of these sides were the people that had strong beliefs and were not going to
stand for anything but their beliefs. The Indians were on the west side of the Mississippi river, and
they did not want to leave their land. The white people were on the other side of the Mississippi river
and had their belief that they owned all the land. With these two groups of people with different
beliefs, this had lead to incompatible

Kinship Rules And Kinship Terms
According to Ide (1989: 229), kinship terms could be used by interlocutors as an effective strategy to
express politeness. Brown and Levison (1987) also have the same opinion, noting that kinship terms
could be used as politeness markers because they constitute in group identity markers . In Vietnamese
daily communication, kinship terms are not only restricted within the framework of nuclear families,
such as bố mẹ (parents), anh (elder brother), chị (elder sister), but also varies in a very complicated list
based on different criteria. According to Le (2013), there are several factors that interlocutors must
base on to decide appropriate kinship terms, such as age, gender, social status, intimacy and
acquaintance. However, within the family context, the hierarchical position is the most important
factor determining which kinship terms will be used by interlocutors. There are two kinds of kinship
terms used by Vietnamese people both inside and outside family context based on paternal and
maternal kin. On the one hand, paternal kinship terms used for people relating to father s relatives,
such as ông nội (paternal grandfather), bà nội (paternal grandmother), chú (father s younger brother),
bác (father s elder brother/sister), cô (father s younger sister), thím (father s younger brother s wife).
On the other hand, maternal kinship terms used for people relating mother s relatives, such as ông

Exaggeration of Despair in Sherman Alexie s Reservation Blues
Gloria Bird realizes that for generations Native Americans have had drinking problems, and she also
realizes that it is difficult for native writers to accurately represent our communities without exploiting
them. (G. Bird) However, Bird criticizes Alexie of embellishing or exaggerating the Native Americans
despair. Alexie cannot ignore the alcohol situation when describing Native American culture, but
Alexie does not need to make alcoholism a common trait amongst almost every Indian on the
reservation and other reservations.

Alexie does not just mention that Samuel is a drunk; he goes further to say that Samuel was an
extremely talented basketball player, but alcohol caused Samuel to throw his basketball future away.
Even when Samuel was a young man he was drinking, when the tribal cop, Wilson, asked Samuel and

to the death of Victor s father in Arizona and the simple fact that his mother is dead. The reason his
father died in Arizona is that he could not bear any longer to live on the Spokane Reservation after
what he did. One night he got drunk and

Pierre Trudeau s War Measures Act
Pierre Elliotte Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada during the 1970s, was the man who saved
Quebec from separating from Canada by using the War Measures Act very effectively. At that time,
Quebec was in a bad situation because of a terrorist group called the FLQ (Front de libération du
Québec), that had been bombing Quebec since 1963 and gathering people to carry violent
demonstrations and destruction. The situation got worse by each passing day as the FLQ s
revolutionary movement turned into terrorism. The government faced a tough situation. Pierre
Trudeau could not see his country getting divided and took a strict action. The government didn t have
any safe options, but Trudeau handled the matter very tactfully by following the right path, ... Show

Though there had been an initial fear of the military in the minds of the people, the soldiers soon won
their hearts by their devotion and effective actions. The War Measures Act banned the FLQ
demonstrations (which were earlier allowed) to prevent violence, preserve order and protect the
people and public places from attacks. The civilians were completely safe as the officers only
swooped down on suspects chosen from lists assembled by the Quebec and Montreal forces, as told by
John English (88). The fear of the government could be seen in the terrorists only after the
implementation of the act, which showed that Canada will respond harshly and not keep quite. The
terrorists, who claimed to be fearless and revolutionary, rushed to seize their documents and save their
lives as soon as the raids began on October 16, 1970. The police arrested 397 people and disrupted
many others who were linked to FLQ or violence that occurred in the past ( October Crises of 1970 ).
The military successfully broke up the strategies of the FLQ, arrested the terrorists, seized large
quantities of weapons, calmed the people and was able to control the situation and restore

Analysis Of Dragon s Village, Things Fall Apart, And...
In Africa and throughout the world, many countries have been forced to undergo the plight of colonial
rule. Along with this, comes varying external impacts which severely alter the cultural, political,
social, and personal identity of a country both during and long after the Colonial Era. The evidence of
these established changes can be found in the novels; Dragon s Village, Things Fall Apart, and Man of
the People surrounding China and Africa. Along with Deepa Mehta s period films, Earth and Water
and Iciar Bollain s juxtaposition piece, Even the Rain that emphasize the circumstances that occurred
in India and Bolivia.
A master at providing alternative context to Africa and concepts of decolonization, Chinua Achebe
wrote a great amount of literary work, including, Things Fall Apart (1956) and A Man of the People
(1966). The first novel, occurring both before and during Nigeria s neo colonial period, depicts the
relationship between Okonkwo and his Igbo tribe in Umuofia. With an identity heavily dependent on
his social status and structure, Achebe s protagonist communicates his extreme distaste for the
entrance of European colonizers:
Okonkwo was well known throughout the nine villages and even beyond. His fame rested on solid
personal achievements. As a young man of eighteen he had brought honor to his village by throwing
Amalinze the Cat. Amalinze was the great wrestler who for seven years was unbeaten, from Umuofia
to Mbaino. (1.1)

Archetypal Hero
Introduction
Take a minute to think about your favorite comic book character or the superhero that you admired the
most during your childhood and adolescent years. To name a few, Batman, Spiderman, Harry Potter,
Hercules, and more were just some of the beloved comic book and movie characters that were enjoyed
by children and adults alike. They portrayed the traditional archetypal hero, which was to conquer evil
and bring peace to the land and to the world. Over the years, they have become role models to children
all over the nation, as children would often dress up as their favorite character for Halloween or buy
toys at various stores. Also, they were highly praised by society because they were considered the
good guy . However, what all these characters have in common is that they are fictional. The depiction
of the traditional hero in the media and literature has had an impact on American culture for decades.
From their brave spirits, to their brute strength, and selfless personalities made the character appealing
to the average person because it gave this ideal almost perfect image of the person that people wished
they could be. Despite the fact that these characters and their qualities are completely fictional, the
praise and the admiration that the character received at the end of the book or movie due to their
heroic deeds targeted every person s secret desire, which is to be respected, honored, and accepted not
only by family and friends, but by society as

Isolation In The Help, By Kathryn Stockett
The Help, in light of the top of the selling novel by Kathryn Stockett, is a movie about segregation in
Jackson, Mississippi in the mid 1960s. the work clarifies, African American ladies had couple of
alternatives yet to work as abused domestics for affluent white families. While socialites endowed the
bringing up of their youngsters to the house keepers, the last were scarcely ready to tend to their own
particular families. And this happen after the united states Civil War.
The help was not significant to both historical and social because The movie demonstrates that
isolation doesn t simply mean the African American and the white families should live separated. It
just simply means that they can just communicate in specific circumstances for the most part in which
the African Americans individuals are serving white individuals in some limit and there are strict
standards and standards about how they can act toward each other. Abilene s depiction of the design of
Jackson helps us comprehend another part of isolation.

Before 1990 and the emergence of disaster risk reduction...
Before 1990 and the emergence of disaster risk reduction or (DRR), humanitarianism, which is fueled
by the fervent belief in the kindness of strangers remained largely unchallenged as the preferred
approach to disaster management. (Hannigan 42). Humanitarian action is taken on a moral claim and
human rights are almost always based on a legal claim. Activism and humanitarianism have taken
parallel courses in recent years, due to the fact that the basis for intervention has shifted from
intervening states toward individual victims of abuses. (Hannigan 43). Not only has there been a shift
in intervention, but in how responses to humanitarian emergencies victims find themselves are

It falls short on explaining why things like the famine in Ethiopia should have escalated into a
complex emergency the way it did. Ethiopia was ravaged by drought that caused a famine that killed
thousands of citizens in the African nation. Many nations and organizations stepped in to help but ran
into many roadblocks in trying to do so. Due to severe mismanagement of relief funds and food by the
government, those who needed help were not getting it.
The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), was more concerned as to how to the
government would respond to distributing whatever food was received rather than address the drought
and impending famine. (Keller 615). The FAO even denied the government assistance in 1981 and
1984, due to projected needs. Even the U.S. delayed responding to the crisis. They cut food donations
from 8,172 metric tons in 1982 to zero in 1984, even though millions were at risk of dying because of
the famine. (Keller 615). This source was proof that even though international organizations exist,
they can experience pitfalls and setbacks that Hannigan does not address. We have come a long way
from the famine in Ethiopia and in 2014; we would not have responded the way the Reagan
administration did. Many people lost their lives

Wars Of The Roses
The Wars of the Roses, fought in England during the 15th century, was a critical juncture in the history
of England, as it determined the future of England s throne. The Wars of the Roses were not just one
single conflict, but several (hence the name Wars not War) in England during the later half of the 15th
century. The conflict is typically though to stem from the conflicting ambitions of the York and
Lancaster families to control the English throne. The notion that The Wars of the Roses were a power
struggle over the English throne is an obvious one to come to. Given the turbulence surrounding
control of the throne, as well as the violent nature by which Kings were often replaced during this time
it is easy to assume that the conflict was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Such an analysis of the conflict is an easy one to assume based on the nature in which power shifted
hands between the Lancaster and the York families during the time of the Wars of the Roses, however
assuming the conflict was caused simply by two families fighting each other fails to consider much
deeper root causes. If one examines the successful rule of Lancaster King Henry V compared to the
ineffective rule of his son Henry VI it becomes obvious that weak rule, not a thirst for power was the
catalyst behind the York challenge to the throne. Henry V faced no real challenges to his authority
during his successful rule; Henry VI was eventually deposed after his rule saw the decline of England.
Furthermore, given the shifting alliances of nobles, such as the Earl of Warwick, it is clear that
supporting ones own kinsman was not the central factor in who nobles backed during the war. If the
war was the result of family rivalry one would except family ties to be a crucial factor. Lastly the
notion that the conflict stemmed from the York family wanting to take control of the throne away from
the Lancaster family can be easily attributed to later Tudor propaganda. The works of William
Shakespeare would paint the York claims to power as self serving, which would go own to be

Gender Socialization Analysis
Growing up in strict home with strict morals I would definitely say that I learned what the course text
recognizes as gender roles throughout my childhood. I grew up in a family with a mom and dad who
loved each other. I have always watched how my parents would interact and treat each other. They
were male and female who would kiss each other and love each other. This is definitely what has lead
to what I identify as my gender socialization. I have learned what is normal from witnessing a
heterosexual couple. Also, growing up my dad would work and my mom would stay home and
maintain the house. Watching this as a child I would not have expected anything less than for the male
to work and the female be caregiver. I relate this back to gender ... Show more content on

similar situation growing up. Back in the day, there was very specific ways males and females were
supposed to act. In my grandparent s era there was only one gender type of gender identity. Males
were ever more so strictly working to support the family and females very rarely had jobs. It was
considered apart of a female s role to work. My parents experienced a similar situation. Growing up
for them it was considered more acceptable for females to work. However, in my household we still
followed a similar situation as my grandparents. Looking back on my decision to become a nurse I
now realize that there were some outside factors that helped swade me on this career path. Females are
known to be nurturers and caregivers. In a way I am still following my footsteps. Being a female we

Chrysanthemums Sexism
In his short story, Chrysanthemums , John Steinbeck characterizes Elisa as strong, passionate, and
slightly submissive. This story taking place in the era of the Great Depression shows the role of
women in this Californian farming society, and also the sentiments of women and how sexism
influenced their everyday life. Steinbeck uses those three adjectives to show just how the women of
the 30 s were treated and looked at by men and society.
In the story Chrysanthemums , Steinbeck introduces Elisa, the wife of a farmer in the Salinas Valley in
California, as a woman who is about her work and is very dedicated to her garden of chrysanthemums.

  • 2. The Four African Americans Artist Enslaved as well as free African Americans pursued opportunities to create poetry, paintings, sculpture, and other forms of artistic self expression. Many, of course, had to create their opportunities to create. In my paper I will compare and contrast a few artist lives and works of art. The four African Americans artist I will talk about are Robert S. Duncanson, Edward M. Bannister, Mary Edmonia Lewis, and Henry Ossawa Tanner three free born and one a freed slave. The tensions between an art that referred to people s social conditions and an art that transcended race and class politics are represented by the works of two artists active during the 1860s and 1870s: sculptor Mary Edmonia Lewis and landscape painter Robert S. Duncanson. Mary Edmonia Lewis s father was a free African American and her mother a Chippewa Indian. She was an exhibitor at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876 and was the first African American and Native American woman in the United Sates to gain widespread recognition as an artist and also the first African American and Native American in the United States to gain an international reputation as a sculptor. Lewis studied art at Oberlin College, independently in Boston, Massachusetts, and among American and British expatriates in Italy. She used the artistic conventions of neoclassicism to create powerful marble statuary on the subjects of black American emancipation, female oppression, and Native Americans. Lewis s work is ... • 3. Distinc Mise En Scene Analysis This particular scene shows two types of proxemics distances, social distance and impersonal business/casual social gatherings distance. Although this is a long shot, you can see the difference between the two groups of boys based off of how close they stand to each other. The two teams of boys are standing with each other at a social distance; they are friends and if they reached out their arms they could easily touch one another. Both teams are standing close enough to engage in two way communication, but they are by no means friendly with each other. The distances give off the emotional impact that these teams are against one another. This scene from The Longest Yard also shows how proxemics distances can give a clue to the relationships amongst people. In this frame, the convicts football team is cheering and chanting together the night before their big game against the guards. The personal distance between all of the team members at this time shows how they have such a strong relationship. At this moment, the team goes to break the personal space barriers because they have such a strong sense of comradery and unity as a team. This frame shows that the team has come a long way from when they first started. Open and closed forms of filmmaking represent two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pecola grew up in a house as a victim of violence and molestation by her father Cholly Breedlove. Her mother Pauline is also insecure about her skin color. Pecola also had a brother Sammy, who also suffered insecurities and often ran away from home. The MacTeer sisters, Frieda and Claudia are friends of the troubled 11 year old Pecola. • 5. The Republican Party Or Grand Old Party The Origin, The Change, The Present The Republican party or Grand Old Party (GOP), for over 150 years, has maintained itself as a major political party within the United States of America. As a whole, the republican party follows the belief of military build up ,less taxes, and more importantly, a limited government. However, throughout recent years there has been an influx of conservative values being spread throughout the GOP. These values include harsh stances against: homosexuality, immigration, and abortion. This recent conservative trend has caused many to see the party as out of date. Ironically, it has not always been like this, as the party was once what would be defined as liberal . These liberal views included support of conservatism and universal health care(http://www.marketwatch.com/story/four things republicans used to believe 2011 07 18). So, what happened? In short, the conservative influx in the 1950s would lead to this drastic change of views, which would lead us to today s far right republican party. In order to The Origins Of the Republican Party The GOP would begin in the early 1850 s as an Antislavery party in do part to the Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854 . Within this act entailed whether or not slavery could be permitted on nebraska land by settlers and entrepreneurs who wanted to relocate there . This in turn allowed each territory to decide the issue of slavery on the basis of popular sovereignty .Strong opposition for this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Characters In Alice Munro s Differently In Alice Munro s short story Differently, the main character Georgia recounts memories of Maya and their fallout when she visits her friend s widowed husband many years later. Upon her visit, her mind is flooded with memories of friendship, infidelity, and broken trust which inevitably disconnected her from Maya and Ben (Georgia s husband). Throughout the text, the author highlights the main character s inability to filter through many details as she describes the end of various relationships following Maya s betrayal. The author s thorough description of settings, characters, and events emphasizes Georgia s difficulty in focusing on what details of her life are important, as most of them seem important to her. The opening words of Alice Munro s Differently introduce the style the author uses throughout the short story: Georgia once took a creative writing course, and what the instructor told her was: Too many things. Too many things going on at the same time; also too many people [...] What do you want us to pay attention to? Think (Munro 1). These lines echo in the mind of the reader as they dive further into the text, reading about too many things and meeting too many people. Munro introduces Georgia, Raymond, Maya, Ben, Harvey, Anne, Hilda and her former creative writing instructor all within the first few pages. The role of each character (aside from the creative writing instructor) is clouded with the details of their physical appearance or small mannerisms. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Australian Freedom Riders In 1964 there was a protest outside the US consulate in Canberra that two thousand people had attended to protest about racial segregation and civil rights in the United States. Many people of the general public stated things such as if protesters are going to so much trouble why not protest about racial segregation within our own country. These comments had lead to the making of our own Australian Freedom Riders which were based on the American Freedom Riders who were making a difference with civil rights and discrimination in America. They travelled across America to raise awareness of the issues when it came to the African American s rights and they helped achieve equality. There was a saying at the time that racism did no longer exist in Australia only in other countries such as America but after this evidence was released soon it was recognised that racism did in fact exist in Australia. The Australian Freedom Riders had made worldwide news about their travels and experiences. Once the group had finished visiting these towns and had ended their journey Charles Perkins reported what had happened to a crowd of approximately two hundred at the 1965 Federal Council for the Advancement of Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islands conference in Canberra. The responses after this conference were mainly positive and because of Charles Perkins the NSW Aboriginal Welfare Board had announced they would spend sixty five thousand pounds on more housing in Moree for the Aboriginals. The Australian Freedom Riders had caused many debates all across Australia which had then caused the 1967 Referendum which got rid of a law in the constitution that had stated laws can be made for the people of any race, other than the Aboriginal race in any state, for whom it is deemed necessary to make special laws . The law was changed and removed the section other than the Aboriginal race this was a positive change as it meant laws could be made in favour of the Aboriginals which could help protect them. • 8. Summary Of The Episode Remains To Be Seen Goffman (1963) refers to stigma as being a disorder that an individual carries, it is a mark of shame in which something unusual or bad about the person is exposed. When people express an impression to the manner they want to present their self, they play a virtual identity to avoid exposing their actual identity because it might be stigmatized. Goffman (1963) also mentions when people are stigmatized they worry about how others see them, which is the similar to how we feel when performing a certain role to keep what we consider normal people from finding out the truth about our shame a characteristic of what we think is abnormal/weird to other people. Glacalone Rosenfeld (1989) compare social situations to interviews, an approach where an individual selects the perception and behavior to reflect their good qualities to the person they are performing for. Despite trying to give a reasonable impersonation of one self, people run the risk of being discreditable, which is a stigma that is not readily perceivable to others. Allan (2014) also discusses that some people are already discredited, when normal people are readily aware about a person s stigma as they try to pretend that they do not notice, or the person who is already stigmatized plays it off to show or perceive their shame ... • 9. Pasadena City College Internship Report During my past three years at Pasadena City College I was able to explore courses and narrow my interests in a way that may not have been possible at an expensive university. While I have always had an interest in the technical and scientific disciplines, out of high school I was unfocused. I wanted to be a part of something that impacted my community in a positive manner. When first looking into careers I never considered a technical based career, mainly due to family career history. However, as I began to excel in math and MESA organizers got more involved in my success I realized there was a space for my interest in STEM. Throughout my academic endeavor I have earned a spot in two very diverse internships. My first internship was with LADOT. It focused on my individual skills and how to apply them to singular tasks. I was primarily involved in GIS mapping and worked alongside traffic and computer engineers. Though this was an informative and rigorous internship I found my true inspiration in my engineering professor at Pasadena City College. • 10. The Effect Of Wind Energy On Renewable Energy Everyday witnesses increased demand in energy, which requires further investigations on available sources of energy, especially renewable energy that was highlighted in the last decades as per environmental and sustainability demand. Wind energy is one of the cleanest energies that received the attention of researchers and investors because of its availability with low running cost. According to the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA, 2015), wind energy is currently the fastest growing source of electricity in the world, and wind power investment worldwide is expected to expand three fold, from about $18 billion in 2006 to $60 billion in 2016. Although the use of wind energy backs to more than hundreds of years (the wind wheel of Heron of Alexandria in the first century AD is the earliest known instance of using a wind driven wheel to power a machine (Drachmann, 1961; Lohrmann, 1995)), it is yet an immature and growing technology. In recent years, coastal and offshore wind turbines are growing fast, as an attractive means for clean energy production. Due to the nature of the wind in offshore regions, that are powerful and more uniform than inland winds, offshore wind turbines can produce energy effectively (Musial and Butterfield, 2006). It should be noted that the extracted energy is proportional to the cubic of the wind speed which means an increase in wind speed has a significant influence on the amount of produced energy. In addition, it is more cost effective to place ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. How 5-HT modulates NMDA receptor activation is a key... How 5 HT modulates NMDA receptor activation is a key question of interest. Despite being cation channels, NMDA receptors have non linear, voltage dependent conductance (Mayer and Westbrook, 1987). This property results from the voltage dependent Mg2+ blockade of the receptor channels (Mayer et al., 1984; Nowak et al., 1984) and thus leads to the negative slope conductance in the current voltage relationship (i.e. I V curve; Nowak et al., 1984; Flatman et al., 1983; MacDonald et al., 1982). Because of the voltage dependent conductance, NMDA receptor activation generates intrinsic voltage oscillations in spinal neurons of rat (Hochman et al., 1994a; Hochman et al., 1994b) and amphibian (Sillar and Simmers, 1994a; Sillar and Simmers, 1994b) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the cord preparations with TTX treatment, 5 HT application reintroduced the negative slope conductance in the I V curve of healthy motoneurons failing to show the negative slope conductance in the presence of NMDA alone (Schmidt and Jordan, 2000). Moreover, in other motoneurons showing the negative slope conductance in the presence of NMDA alone, 5 HT caused the negative slope conductance to shift toward the hyperpolarizing direction, which could be reversed by 5 HT antagonist mianserin (Schmidt and Jordan, 2000). Reducing the bath concentration of Mg2+ also mimicked the hyperpolarizing shift of the negative slope conductance by 5 HT (Schmidt and Jordan, 2000). Via 5 HT2 receptor activation, protein kinase C (PKC) can enhance the hyperpolarizing shift of the negative slope conductance in the I V curve of NMDA receptors and also reduce Mg2+ blockade of the receptor channels (Blank et al., 1996; Chen and Huang, 1992). Therefore, the effect of 5 HT on the negative slope conductance of NMDA receptors may result from reduction of Mg2+ blockade of the receptor channels. • 13. The Politics Of The United States In the United States, elections can be the deciding factor in ones political career. In recent times, congressional elections have not only become increasingly important, but also more expensive. The expense is often considered a result of modern times, however it results in many people being unable to run for a political position. This begs the question of who might be running for a political position if the price wasn t so high, would it be a more common person who relates more to the people. Often incumbents, those currently in office, are able to edge out competitors because of money. The price of elections can also affect issues that are covered by politicians. While its not too hard to fill the requirements for becoming a senator or representative, most people are unable to run for election due to the financial burden. In current times this leads to politicians caring less about issues and more on their image, money, and reelection. This is because money is related to power so the more money one has, the more powerful one is, and this also relates to reelection and image. During the 2012 congressional election senators, on average, raised $10,476,451 and representative, on average, raised $1,689,580 (Costa). These numbers are the reason why congress is referred to as the millionaires club, over half of the Senate and nearly half of the House are considered millionaires (Condon). Electronic and communications technologies have been used extensively in banking for many years to advance agenda of banks In Ghana, the earliest forms of electronic and communications technologies used were mainly office automation devices. Examples Of Contradictions In Fuzzy Logic Contradictions in Fuzzy Logic Kamp ([qtd. in Sauerland]) argue that it is absurd that p ∧ p has the same truth value as p ∧ ¬p if p is 0.5, and the latter statement cannot have a truth value of 0.5, becauses how could a logical contradiction be true to any degree? (qtd. in Sauerland 187). Sauerland ([year]) however thinks that this is not the case: if p contains a vague variable, the statement does not need to be a contradiction to be intuitive, e.g. What I did was smart and not smart, or Bea is both tall and not tall are statements which are contradictions, and they still make sense although they are vague (186). The same holds for sentences like What I did was smart and not smart (cf. Still, both sentences He is nice and not nice and He is tall and not tall are of the form p ∧ ¬p, and are not considered contradictions with a truth value of 0. But if you consider He is nice and not nice as the person being nice and not nice in the same respect, then of course the contradiction would be obviously present, in which case the truth value would indeed be 0 (I do not think that you could interpret He is tall and not tall in a way such that its truth degree would be 0): it would then be reasonable to interpret He is nice (in some respects) and not nice (in other respects) as rather p ∧ ¬q than p ∧ ¬p, because the different contexts in which he is nice and not nice might be seen as concepts which are not actually related, that is, the situations in ... It is difficult to tell someone that one needs to go potty if one is having trouble communicating (Kiddoo et al. 2006) and it is also difficult for us to communicate to the child with autism what the importance of going potty is or what they are supposed to do. The book is a well researched supported intervention because it is very structured, straightforward, all the procedures are laid out, and it is easy to take data and track progress. There are different components in the toilet training procedure. First, we start off with having the child not wear diapers anymore and transitioning them into underwear (Cocchiola, Martino, Dwyer, Demezzo, 2012). We then put the child on a toileting schedule, so setting up a routine where every 20 or 40 minutes we are taking the child to the toilet. Next, we increase their fluid intake by which the child will go to the bathroom frequently (Cocchiola et al. 2012) and can practice what they are supposed to do and the learning will increase as well. Furthermore, by increasing the fluid intake we are increasing the probability that the child is going to go to the bathroom in the toilet and we are increasing the probability that we are going to have a coincidence, so when we put the child on the toilet every 20 minutes, one of those times the child is finally going to go. Thus, giving us the desired behavior and this is difficult because this is a behavior that we cannot prompt and we have to wait for it to happen at the right time and then reinforce the child for it. So, we are trying to essentially create a lot of probability that the child is going to go in the toilet when we take them and then reinforce them for it, so a little bit of learning traction can happen. Additionally, there is a dry pants check where it is a procedure where we check the child s pants in between their trips to the toilet and if the pants are dry then we praise them for it, so that they have the idea that staying dry is the right ... The conflict is typically though to stem from the conflicting ambitions of the York and Lancaster families to control the English throne. The notion that The Wars of the Roses were a power struggle over the English throne is an obvious one to come to. Given the turbulence surrounding control of the throne, as well as the violent nature by which Kings were often replaced during this time it is easy to assume that the conflict was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such an analysis of the conflict is an easy one to assume based on the nature in which power shifted hands between the Lancaster and the York families during the time of the Wars of the Roses, however assuming the conflict was caused simply by two families fighting each other fails to consider much deeper root causes. If one examines the successful rule of Lancaster King Henry V compared to the ineffective rule of his son Henry VI it becomes obvious that weak rule, not a thirst for power was the catalyst behind the York challenge to the throne. Henry V faced no real challenges to his authority during his successful rule; Henry VI was eventually deposed after his rule saw the decline of England. Furthermore, given the shifting alliances of nobles, such as the Earl of Warwick, it is clear that supporting ones own kinsman was not the central factor in who nobles backed during the war. If the war was the result of family rivalry one would except family ties to be a crucial factor. Lastly the notion that the conflict stemmed from the York family wanting to take control of the throne away from the Lancaster family can be easily attributed to later Tudor propaganda. The works of William Shakespeare would paint the York claims to power as self serving, which would go own to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Gender Socialization Analysis Growing up in strict home with strict morals I would definitely say that I learned what the course text recognizes as gender roles throughout my childhood. I grew up in a family with a mom and dad who loved each other. I have always watched how my parents would interact and treat each other. They were male and female who would kiss each other and love each other. This is definitely what has lead to what I identify as my gender socialization. I have learned what is normal from witnessing a heterosexual couple. Also, growing up my dad would work and my mom would stay home and maintain the house. Watching this as a child I would not have expected anything less than for the male to work and the female be caregiver. I relate this back to gender ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When I took sewing lessons at Joann Fabrics I never stopped to think about why there was not any men there. Also, at my high school our field hockey team was an all girls team. If a male wanted to play on the team he still had to wear a kilt like the rest of us. My parents and grandparents experienced similar situation growing up. Back in the day, there was very specific ways males and females were supposed to act. In my grandparent s era there was only one gender type of gender identity. Males were ever more so strictly working to support the family and females very rarely had jobs. It was considered apart of a female s role to work. My parents experienced a similar situation. Growing up for them it was considered more acceptable for females to work. However, in my household we still followed a similar situation as my grandparents. Looking back on my decision to become a nurse I now realize that there were some outside factors that helped swade me on this career path. Females are known to be nurturers and caregivers. In a way I am still following my footsteps. Being a female we were known to care of the family. Similarly, being a nurse I will be taking care of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This story taking place in the era of the Great Depression shows the role of women in this Californian farming society, and also the sentiments of women and how sexism influenced their everyday life. Steinbeck uses those three adjectives to show just how the women of the 30 s were treated and looked at by men and society. In the story Chrysanthemums , Steinbeck introduces Elisa, the wife of a farmer in the Salinas Valley in California, as a woman who is about her work and is very dedicated to her garden of chrysanthemums.
