Mark to Market Accounting
Running head: Mark to Market Accounting
Mark to Market Accounting and Ethical Issues
Ethical Issues ACC 504
April 16, 2012
Abstract
Economic principle s rationale for requiring guidance for financial institutions is to use mark to
market accounting or fair value accounting on their financial reports. With the current economic crisis,
questions have been raised as to whether or not fair value accounting is making this crisis worse. In
this paper I review the history of fair value accounting and the ethics behind whether fair value
accounting gives an accurate picture or is it causing a need for higher capital requirements and
unnecessary concern with investors. There is a need for transparency. It is Accounting Standards and

This objections implies that a company may be cash poor with valuable assets, this ignores the fact
that a company can use temporary financing to fund current operations with future cash flows. 4.
Valuations may be flawed or imperfect. This is an understandable objection, because some assets are
more easily valued than others. That does not mean though that fair value method should not be used
when the alternative method is just as flawed.
When we look at a benefit of the fair value accounting method we see that a firm will behave
differently, and will take this method into consideration when they are purchasing this asset. The
decisions tend to be less risky if they know that they will have to devalue the asset in the future. Bad
decisions would be something that they would have to identify publicly with future marking to
market. Companies would no longer have a motivation to sell assets for the benefit of recognizing an
accounting gain. Historically a major financial event or crisis prompts reconsideration of accounting
rules governing reported asset valuations. The credit crisis in 2008 generated reconsideration. In the
1980 s the savings and loan crisis prompted accounting rules move away from historical cost
accounting. Had there been a fair value accounting system in place in the 1980 s the savings and loan
crisis would have not taken years to realize. The banks had made long term mortgage loans and
borrowed short term. When the interest

Al-Hakam II
All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. All these aspirations are directed toward
ennobling man s life, lifting it from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual
towards freedom. This quote, once said by Albert Einstein, represents what Al Hakam II had strived
towards during his rule. Under his leadership, Córdoba experienced a golden age in the arts and
sciences. Al Hakam II and his father had built a vast library filled with books from all over the world.
He had also sponsored scholars, and established numerous schools throughout his territory. However,
despite the relative peace and prosperity, Al Hakam II had waged war against leaders from other
cultures and religions. In the year 632 AD, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

rebel [al māriq], and the tyrant [al ẓālim]. In Al Hakam s eyes, his eventual triumph over Hasan
marked the extension of his authority over all of the western Maghrib, and used this event to publicly
announce his legitimacy as Caliph. Al Rāzī [historian] reported that Al Hakam sent a letter announcing
the surrender of Hasan to his governors, to be read in all the congregational mosques. Although his
victory in North Africa caused the rebellious neighboring caliphs to acknowledge his rule, the same
could not be said for the Christian kings. One such king was Sancho I, who had become king of León
after the death of his brother, in 955, and deposed by his cousin, Ordoño IV, in 958. After the death of
Al Nāṣir, the Abbasid Caliph of Baghdad, and his expulsion, Ordoño fled to the city of Burgos

latter declared his submission to the Caliph. With Ordoño s complete submission, Al Hakam promised

Role Of Art In The Gilded Age
The American Role of Art
The Gilded Age, named after the novel written by Mark Twain, describes a time full of social issues in
the United States. After the Civil War, America was a powerhouse in industrialization. Due to the
rapid economic development the rich got richer and the poor got, well they got poorer. The Gilded
Age depicts the huge financial, social, and political changes that the United States had undergone from
the ladder part of the nineteenth century up until World War I.
Art in the United States became somewhat of a necessity during this time; the wealthy sought to fill
their home with the finer things. The painters of this time aimed to glorify the reality of the subjects;
focusing on elegant lines and colors. John Singer Sargent was one of the most pursued artists, well
known for his portraits. Madame X brought Sargent to fame. Although first considered to be too
provocative; a beautiful woman in a figure fitting dress with a plunging neckline it became a high
demand piece. Jules Guerin, a muralist known for his work in the Lincoln Memorial, depicting the
most notable moments throughout his Presidential Era. Above the inscription of the Gettysburg
Address, a mural with the Angel of Truth releasing slaves from their shackles of Hell standing center

Metal Forming In Medieval Europe
During the Medieval period through the 5th and 15th centuries in Europe, technology advancement in
metal forming and extraction was becoming popular. The reason for this is because of the battles and
empires in the time periods having the desires to expand and build up their military. To complete this
task, an edge in iron working and metal forming had to be solidified as a strength for those wanting to
further expand their countries boundaries. An example of this would be the Roman Empire. (Source)

Solution Focussed Therapy in Social Work
In the 1980 s Insoo Berg and Steve de Shazer developed steps into the practice of solution focused
therapy in Milwaukee, USA. Solution focused therapy is a practice framework for social workers and
other therapists. Solution focused therapy is a framework that primarily focuses on solution
development. Other Frameworks lead therapy to focus on the past history of the problem that the
client brings to therapy, and ending their sessions with a solution to the problem, or when the problem

Utilitarianism Vs. Utilitarianism Theory
In the history of philosophy Utilitarianism has been viewed as one of the best of the moral theories. It
has become one the most powerful, influential, and most persuasive approach to normative ethics. The
utilitarianism theory also has had a major impacts on approaches to economic, political, and social
policy. The utilitarianism theory had originally had been created by Jeremy Bentham. His version of
was that aggregate pleasure after deducting suffering of all involved in any action. However, this was
later revised by John Stuart Mill He has revised the concept of utility and has brought forth the
Greatest Happiness Principle .
First off, utilitarianism is the philosophical view about how we should evaluate a things that are
involve choices that people have to make. These things that are evaluated are actions, laws, policies,
character traits, and moral codes. In general, whatever is being evaluated, we are the ones that have to
choose the one that will produce the best overall results. Utilitarianism is also a form of
consequentialism this is because utilitarianism is based on the consequences or results of actions that
are the only standard of right and wrong. Utilitarian s say that we should choose the option that has
maximizes utility, i.e. that action or policy that produces the largest amount of good. Although it may
be similar to Utilitarianism is distinctly different from other forms of consequentialism such as egoism
as it considers all interests equally. On

Controversy In Shirley Jackson s The Lottery
Shirley Jackson s story The Lottery stirred up a lot of controversy when it was first published in The
New Yorker in 1948. Considering that it is a short story, and only took a few hours to write no one
suspected the impact it would have on everyone. It was widely disliked, and most people were highly
confused by it. Many people unsubscribed to the magazine, and Jackson received a lot of hate mail
because of it.
The fictional story tells of the events that take place in a town once a year. A lottery is held, and one
person is chosen to be stoned to death. Jackson s message seems to be about how easy it is to conform
to something, even senseless violence, just because it is considered a tradition. Now it is one of the

Literary Themes In The Lives Of Animals By Elizabeth Costello
The novel The Lives of Animals revolves around a novelist named Elizabeth Costello. She is an
animal rights activist and it so consumes her that she begins to be disgusted with the human race and
the way that they treat animals. She hates meat eaters and is only focused on animal rights in her old
age. Her son works at a university and while admires her work, is a bit embarrassed by it as well.
Especially when Costello is going to do a lecture on animal rights at the university he works at. Her
son s friends at the school disagree with her lecture as most of it emphasized the fact that human
reason is not a value of life and is stupid. Following the lecture, characters approach Costello with
questions regarding animal rights surrounding philosophical as well as religious aspects.
One of the main literary themes present in this novel is philosophy. Throughout the book, Costello is
questioned on many things, some regarding philosophical stances to which Costello replies: I want to
find a way of speaking to fellow human beings that will be cool rather than heated, philosophical
rather than polemical, that will bring enlightenment rather than seeking to divide us into the righteous
and the sinners, the saved and the damned, the sheep and the goats (Coetzee). Coetzee encourages
these philosophical questions and it is a recurrent theme in the novel. Another theme in the novel that
often comes up is reasoning. Costello believes that humans use reason to classify things too much and
that it is a stupid way of doing things. Throughout the novel, she teaches on the subject stating, For,
seen from the outside, from a being who is alien to it, reason is simply a vast tautology (Coetzee)
which proves that she believes animals should have rights whether they can reason or not. The final
literary theme that is often brought up is death. Costello is not afraid to be gruesome and graphic with
her word choices as she says things like, I return one last time to the places of death all around us, the
places of slaughter to which, in a huge communal effort, we close our hearts. Each day a fresh
holocaust, yet, as far as I can see, our moral being is untouched. We do not feel tainted. We can do
anything, it seems, and come

Persuasive Essay On National Parks
National parks: protected areas of land throughout the world to express natural beauty. Every year,
people visit the many national parks we have here to offer in the United States. Some of which being
Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Aradia, Arches, Zion, Joshua Tree, and Sequoia. Two of the
most famous national parks here in the United States are the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National
Park. The beauty of these parks attract many tourists year round and there is always something new
happening there.
National parks signify the beauty and compassion of our national heritage through nature and wildlife.
National Parks also deliver other invaluable economic, social, cultural and health benefits. With many
people traveling yearly, there is always going to be someone new telling you to go to this way cool
national park they visited during their vacation. The generations that follow us should know the
importance of wanting to explore and appreciate nature around them and why there are parks
dedicated and protected to them. Nature should be experienced through a kind and peaceful manner,
so that everyone can enjoy. National parks have been woven into American society since the mid
1800s, and have been enjoyed and loved ever since.
On the 25th of August in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed an act proclaiming that 35 national
parks and monuments, and yet to be established monuments, are to be protected and placed under
good care. National parks today now compromise more

unit sales of toothbrushes for Cottle India were 344.2 million units. Out of this, 299.5 million units
consisted of low end toothbrush products. One of the major issues in considering this option is that
persuading existing Cottle consumers to upgrade to mid range and premium products may increase the
revenue generated from toothbrush products, but it may not be the best option to consider if goal is to

Sustainable Development Of Green Logistics
Based on sustainable development of green logistics in China and the countermeasures (2007), China
is especially vulnerable to climate change due to its complex climatic conditions, a fragile ecological
environment, a massive population and frequent natural disasters. Insufficient per ca pita resources
and very sharp contradictions between development and environment force China to further develop a
cycling economy. Green logistics is an important tool for sustainable development.
However, logistics in China is in its infant period. Hence, there are some problems, for example,
immediate economic benefits to the enterprise and ecological and social benefits faced, which results
in negative environmental issues in China. It is worth noting that there is a need for the sustainable
logistics system inhibiting cause harmful to the environment while forming a modern logistics system
that can promote economic. There must be a combination of sustainable development and logistics
applying the principles of sustainability in green logistics. Nevertheless, there are still many people
who are not aware of green logistics and even suspect the necessity of establishment of green logistics.
This essay aims to introduce the basic theory of green logistics in China, analysis of the development
situation of green logistics in China, countermeasures, suggestions for implementation of green
logistics in China as well as the future of Chinese enterprise s logistics development in charting a

figurine from the upper paleolithic period(pg 6), depicting a woman with an emphasis on her womanly
traits, such as her breast and hips. She is thought to be a votive figure; which tribes would offer to
another tribe as a sign of fertility and that the other tribe wanted to mingle with their tribe. The

Who Is Winston Smith A Hero
The journey of a hero usually begins with downfall and ends with success. However, with Winston it
is the other way around, his journey starts at success and ends with downfall. But that shouldn t
unqualify him from being a hero. Winston Smith is the hero of the novel because he shows courage,
and has a strong mentality and he continuously looks past limitations. He basically was willing to do
anything for what he believed in, an example of this could be when he made a promise to O Brien
saying that he was going to do anything for the brotherhood even if it meant he had to hurt children.
Winston could not defeat the Party, however he makes small acts which rebel against the party and by
doing this he is trying to be a leader to show the other members of the party that something needs to
be done. He still proves that he is a questing hero through his courage, strong mentality and his ability
to look past his limitations.
Even though Winston did do some bad like telling setting the rats on Julia because of his fear and
suddenly loving Big Brother at the end, which most people consider hypocritical. But why not look at
the positive? He repeatedly wrote down with Big Brother , and he went about his love affair with Julia
which by the way he barely knew. He tries and see the party for what it is, and of course it certainly
wasn t any good, he thinks very much and philosophies a lot, but that certainly does not make his live
better. He s a hero because he cares about the people who he sees around him, and he tries to help
them in the best way he can considering the fact that his health isn t so good. Just imagine what he
was going through it must ve been extremely hard to mentally be going against something or someone
when everyone else who surrounds supports them or the ideas that they represent.
A quote where Winston shows courage is The first step had been a secret, involuntary thought; the
second had been opening that diary. He had moved from thoughts to words, and now from words to
actions . He had the courage to attempt a dangerous path but it was unintentional. A quote where he
shows that he has a strong mentality is; I think I exist, he said wearily. I am conscious of my own
identity. I was

Endocrine Gland Research Paper
There are many factors that work harmoniously to keep the body working correctly, various endocrine
glands (glands that secrete things inside the body) work in time with each other, the brain, and organs,
to maintain balance in the body. These endocrine glands secrete a large variety of hormones that travel
throughout the body to distribute their specific chemicals for the necessary reactions. One endocrine
gland that is incredibly important in the body is the adrenal gland, as it is essentially responsible for
the fight or flight response by secreting Epinephrine, Norepinephrine, and maintaining bodily
homeostasis by secreting Aldosterone and Cortisol, although Cortisol also contributes to the stress
response. However there is a lot of minuscule ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As it s responsible for balancing the water balance, and therefore the secretion and re absorption of
Sodium and Potassium in the renal tubules, Aldosterone binds onto mineralcorticoids receptors and
this complex moves to the nucleus, which then results in specific mRNA being synthesized and
increases or inhibits specific proteins necessary to balance the water levels in the body (Feher 2012).
Cortisol is also quite specific in it s actions , for example, it works to increase blood glucose, and
therefore strongly targets the liver, muscles, and fat, to metabolize necessary glucose storage s
(Nussey Whitehead 2001). Cortisol travels through the bloodstream while binded to Cortisol Binding
Protein and diffuse across the outer membrane of the target cells as it s lipid soluble (Jameson Groot
2015), and binds to specific receptors, otherwise known as glucocorticoid receptors, in the cytoplasm
which are already associated with heat shock proteins; as the cortisol attaches to the receptor, the heat
shock protein is released (Nussey Whitehead 2001). This receptor complex is then transported into the
nucleus using energy, and cortisol then attaches to Glucocorticoid Response Elements in the DNA
helix, which initiates RNA synthesis for the specific proteins needed to carry out each specific
response (Nussey Whitehead 2001). Due to the similar receptor

Alcohol Abuse In Adolescence Essay
Alcohol Abuse in Adolescence Khoa Nguyen San Jose State University The period of adolescence,
from the age of 10 21, is one of the most critical and pivotal stages of the development of human
beings. Although adolescence only covers roughly ten years, or about one seventh of the entire human
lifespan, decisions and actions made during this period of time can have drastic effects on the
individual further down his/her life. Part of being an adolescent is experiencing new things, and
testing out different types of identities to see which fits best. Erikson, a German born American
developmental psychologist, characterized this part of lifespan development as identity v.s. identity
confusion(Erikson s Stages of Development, 2016). Erikson believed that during this period in an
adolescent s life, they are faced with deciding who they are, what they are all about, and where they
are going in life(Santrock, 2015). Part of finding that identity might come with trying new substances
like alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and other harmful drugs. Unfortunately, sometimes their first try of
the new substance does not become their last. Especially with alcohol, these drugs can be highly
addictive and mistreated, translating to abuse. With their young unstable developing minds and with
the easy accessibility and social acceptance of liquor, it seems like the adolescent age is bound on a
crash course towards the abusement of alcohol. What is Alcohol

Symptoms And Symptoms Of Nausea
What Does Nausea Feel Like
One of the early signs of pregnancy is nausea, and many expectant mothers experience nausea during
early pregnancy. Nausea is usually a common symptom throughout the first trimester or even longer,
and it is typically the most complained about symptom that women report. Fortunately, even though
nausea can be terribly uncomfortable, it is not harmful to you or your baby. Not surprisingly, first time
mothers want to know, what does nausea feel like?

Why Would I Experience Nausea in Pregnancy?
Nobody can say exactly what causes nausea during pregnancy. However, it is probably a combination
of the many changes your body is going through and some of the possible causes could include:
$ Estrogen: The hormone estrogen increases rapidly during early pregnancy and may contribute to
feelings of nausea.
$ Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG): This hormone also increases during early pregnancy, and
especially if the pregnancy is with twins. While not much is known about its contribution to nausea,
the timing suggests that it might increase a mother s sensitivity to it.
$ Enhanced Sensitivity to Odors: It s very common for pregnant women to be overwhelmed by certain
odors. Culprits can include eggs, raw meat,

The Pros And Cons Of Cyber Crime
Cyber crime is criminal activity done using computers and the Internet. This ranges from downloading
illegal music files to offenses, such as creating and distributing viruses on other computers or posting
private business information on the Internet.
Perhaps the most outstanding form of cyber crime is identity theft, in which wrongdoers use the web
to steal personal information from other users. One of the most frequent ways this is done is through
phishing. This method entices people to fake websites (that appear to be legitimate), where they are
asked to enter information about themselves. This includes inputting information, such as usernames
and passwords, mobile numbers, addresses, credit card numbers, and other information criminals can
use to gain another person s identity. Many people in developing countries are getting attracted
towards because of high unemployment and low wages . (Kshetri, 2010)
Another way this is done is through the use of viruses, There is a number of ways that you can get a
virus on your computer while on the other side someone is able to access all the data in your machine.
One of the most common way on how this is done is when an attachment is sent to you on email or
any other social networking site and when you open it, your machine ... Show more content on

Cyber crime covers a wide range of wrong doings that are done using the web and the very same web

to take advantage of unsuspecting people. Also sadly it is sometimes difficult to trace the person/s who
is or are doing it. So it is smart to protect yourself using anti viruses and spyware. In developing
countries they are not too keen on the laws broken unless it is a major cyber crime committed so it is

Every organizations invests millions every year to gather information, be it about their own

for its benefit. It not only gives the management a financial overview of the organization, but also
from three other perspectives which include customer, internal business process and learning and

Reproduction In Psychology
The field of personality psychology is a very unique one as it tries to understand and describe the
individual human being as a complex whole. It would seem easy to describe one personality by simply
identifying one personal traits or behaviors but one cannot explain individuality without comparing it
against other living organisms. Mc Adams (2009) states that the study of personality psychology
requires that one attempts to construct a scientifically credible account of people psychological
differences and search for biological and socio cultural factors that explain these differences and
commonalities. In order for us to understand these differences we need to start at the core of human
nature; at its origins.
So what are human beings like? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sexual desires play a great role in understanding an individual personality. Men in their nature are
attracted by power and wealth and can be aggressive in their approach in attaining both. They
approach sexual reproduction in a much different way to their female counterparts. Men tend to be
more aggressive and promiscuous in their approach as they tend to have many sexual partners as they
see the advantage of impregnating as many women as possible. This is seen as successful method of
ensuring that their genes are passed down to the next generation. They tend to seek out women with a
higher sexual reproduction, women who will be able to bear them strong healthy children able to
continue the reproduction process. Women on the other hand are choosier in their selection of mating
partners. They invest most of their time in finding the right type of partner who can provide financial
security and help protect and raise their offspring. If we are to take both analogies into a broader
prospective we can see these play out in both our modern days and history. Take for instance
monarchs or royal families. There is a strict procedure in the selection of a future prince or princess.
Because of royalty they have to select their partners based on several factors; such as social class or
standing in society; as it is important that

Loss Of Children In The Stone Boy By Gina Berriault
The Stone Boy
Way too often we see kids who are neglected emotionally after a tragic event, and how negatively it
effects them later on. It forces them to give up their innocent childhood. That is exactly what happens
in Gina Berriault s short story The Stone Boy . The story is about a 9 year old boy who accidently
shoots his older brother dead. The boy shows no emotion, whatsoever, and it is clear the grownups do
not understand him, so he is labeled with words like cruel . He does not understand his feelings and he
loses his identity when his mother rejects him in a way no mother should. So he is left alone,
beginning to believe that he is actually cruel.

When the accident happens, we see Arnold go into some state of shock and his actions after this point
are described as mechanically . This is a way for Arnold to shut off his feelings so he does not have to
feel the great grief of the loss of his brother. The Sheriff and the parents misinterpret his way of
dealing with his sorrow, and instead they label the boy as cruel. Arnold is already in between identities
because of the accident, which threw him out of the childish innocence, so he needs his parent s
guidance and comfort more than ever. He is very insecure, and in the interview, he relies completely
on his father s answers. However, when his parents believe he is cruel, he thinks it must be right, so he
takes on this new identity.
This new identity is described in the title as the stone boy , but this is not at all the boy we meet in the
beginning, so Arnold goes through quite a change in the short story.
There is also a transformation in Arnold s identity from day to night. In the daytime, we see a kid who
does not show any emotions. He does not seem to regret his brother s

Even though he is not her father, her mind cannot stop flashing back to how her father would molest
her sexually. It revolves around her purity again in the poem Blue Blackout when the line ...he was my
first. We both knew it. / We believed it. My whole life / depended on it... comes up. She clings to the
idea that she is a virgin for her lover s sake. She does not want him to be tainted like she has been. In
my opinion, the most shocking fact I came into grips with was that not only Anderson and her father
knew of the incest, but so did the mother and the elder brother. It made me wonder what type of
brainwash or control did he have over them to keep them all quiet and ignorant. Then in the poem The
Good Christian. The father used religion and twisted it up; tricking his daughter into thinking what he
was doing was just. And so in church you were afraid. You knew. / That closing your eyes made no
prayer come true. / That all sins of sinner were forgiven. Yet in this poem, she is looking back on her
father s words and recalling when she was in church at how confused she was. No matter how her
father was, she was brainwashed into believing he d be forgiven. Towards the end of the book, as a
reader, you may feel emotionless or full of swelled up emotions, making what to burst into tears. You
are either filled with sadness or completely ripped away of how you should feel. Just like Anderson as
a child, you feel as if you yourself

Management Incentives
Eli Lilly is a profitable company and is one of the top pharmaceutical firms. The company has faced
losses in the year 2008 but appears to have been recovering strongly. While Lilly has much lower
earnings than its competitor, Pfizer, Lilly s ROA and ROE are substantially higher than Pfizer.
However, Lilly s earnings fell by 14.2% in the year 2011, and ROA and ROE also fell during the
period. Its P/E ratio fell substantially since 2008 due to the market s lack of optimism about Lilly s
future. Lilly s management is under considerable pressure to reverse the declining trend. Thus,
management would have incentives to manipulate the areas of accounting that require judgment call
like revenue recognition policies and valuation allowances to boost in earnings in 2011.

Valuation Allowances
Accounts Receivable The comparison of Lilly s days receivables with changes in their valuation
allowance reveals an unusual pattern. During 2009 Lilly s days receivable increased, but its valuation
allowance decreased. This was a year after the company incurred losses, this could have been a
management attempt to increase net income to help demonstrate company s recovery. During the year
2011, Lilly s days receivable fell slightly while its allowance increased by 0.8 percentage points.
However, this pattern is inconsistent

The Federalist 10, By James Madison
In the Federalist 10, it is mostly about the constitution. It was written by James Madison, who oversaw
it. The main purpose of this article is faction. In politics, faction is people that group themselves.
Madison said that in the republic. Madison says that the number one common characteristic is the
largest people. The democracy would be possible because you couldn t create a majority group of
people that would have a lot in common. However now, democracy become too big in this scale.
People don t have much in common. That was the anti federalist concerned. And now Madison came
up by saying that just because there are larger group of people that doesn t mean they are right with
what they should say. Majorities are somewhat dangerous; they sometimes do foolish stuff. Also, they
somewhat not to be trusted. Now, the fact that the new constitution republic is covering. Democracy is
In addition, Madison defined that a faction is an amount of people, whether a popular or smaller, who
are combined and motivated by nearly mutual compulsion of desire, or of attention, opposing to the
privileges of further residents, or to the durable and collective benefits of the public. Also he explained
why the Framers took a representative democracy, a republic, slightly than a clean, straight,
democracy as the system of government for our new population. He defined a pure democracy as a
culture involving of a lesser quantity of nations, who gather and direct the rule in individual.

Irony in Jonathan Swift s A Modest Proposal
Rhetorical strategies are techniques, which are used to make one s writings more effective. The choice
of rhetoric strategy depends on the type of subject being discussed. The effectiveness of appropriate
strategy is directly related to the mood, which is to be created and maintained. For example if
someone is criticizing the government, the tome is usually kept serious and Irony and satire are widely
used in such writings. On the other hand while describing the recent developments in genetic
engineering, the tone would be objective and humor or satire would be ineffective here.
Jonathan Swift was famous for his sarcastic remarks on the government of his days and his works are

But I am not in the least pain upon that matter, because it is very well known that they are every day
dying and rotting by cold and famine, and filth and vermin, as fast as can be reasonably expected.
Swift was not the only one who applied the technique of irony to convey his message more effectively,
there were several other people who from time to time have made use of satire with irony to comment
on or oppose to certain views and ideas. Martin Luther King Jr. was the champion of human rights
who spoke extensively for the rights of African Americans. He became an icon for the black
community because of his highly emotional speeches and his writings, which focused on the subject
of equal rights for black men and women in the United States.
His Letters from the Birmingham jail are valued for their emotional content and their comments on his
own activities. These letters cannot exactly be termed satirical or ironical in tone. In fact compared to
Swift s works, King s letters would probably appear polite. But there are certain portions where he has
used irony very effectively for example in his response to clergymen who had criticized King s
activities, he said in his letter, While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your
recent statement calling my present activities unwise and untimely. Seldom do I

The Ideology Of Slavery By Drew Gilpin Faust
In The Ideology of Slavery by Drew Gilpin Faust, in Chapter 4 which is James Henry Hammond that
writes a letter to an English Abolitionist, in a section he describes how he believes that Slavery is not a
sin and is approved by Christ. It would seem that while God commanded Moses to free his people that
were slaves to the Pharaoh, man is overlooking these in the Bible and that they are creating their own
law and how their religion differs totally by what they do. I think, then, I may safely conclude, and I
firmly believe, that American Slavery is not only not a sin, but especially commanded by God through
Moses, and approved by Christ through his apostles (Faust 175). When reasoning between what is
right and wrong, Americans only found that what they were doing was not necessarily evil or wrong
just that God permitted it, and also white Americans found slavery to be very significant for their own
lives, due to the fact that their way of making money and making a living involved the owning of
humans to make themselves the most profitable.
While Slavery was against humanity and Abolitionists who believed in abolition of the practice of
slavery, the South had their own reasons why slavery was needed in America and how basically they
supported pro slavery. For instance, some arguments for slavery were, Sudden end to the slave

Divine Command Theory On Abortion
The theological approach to understanding morality is best described with the Divine Command
Theory. According to Thiroux and Krasemann (2006), Divine Command Theory states that morality is
based not upon the consequences of actions or rules, nor upon self interest or other interestedness, but
rather upon something higher than these mere mundane events of the imperfect human or natural
worlds. In the context of pro life; morally speaking, it suggests that human life is a gift from a higher
power God. Additionally, it suggests that God defines human life taking on varying forms ranging
from that of an adult all the way to that consisting of a baby in the womb. Aligning with the principles
detailed in the Divine Command Theory, moral and ethical guidance to the child barer would suggest

carbon dioxide (CO2) . . . have caused temperatures to rise around the globe ( New Science. . . ).
The concern listed last is a perfect example of the power of hype. While many different sectors of the
media and even world governments proclaim that all scientists agree global warming is occurring, a
quiet majority is beginning to speak up. In 1992, a Gallup survey asked many climatologists. The
survey found that 81 percent respondents believed that the global temperature had not risen over the
past 100 years ( Global Warming Consensus . . . ). A survey conducted by American Viewpoint found
that climatologists believe that global warming is largely a natural phenomenon by a margin of 44% to
17% ( Global Warming Consensus . . . ). Along with this survey, other untruths are appearing about
claims that scientists who believe in global have signed thousands of letters warming. According to
the National Center for Public Policy Research, a letter used in a report by Ozone Action was actually
signed by landscape architects, a gynecologist, and a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine (
Global Warming Consensus . . . ).

Characteristics Of Mrs Dalloway
1. The (American spelling) focalizer in the selection you read from Mrs. Dalloway changes at least
eight times. Time also moves forward when the focalizer changes. How does Woolf create those
changes? What leads us from one focalizer to another? Find three examples. Woolf uses multiple
focalizers in Mrs. Dalloway to create a new point of view in the story. Woolf indicates these changes
through subtle transitions that are hardly noticed at, as the story shifts to another viewpoint of a
character. Sometimes we are lead between focalizers in ways, such as at the beginning of Mrs.
Dalloway when Clarissa begins to transition into the past reminiscing. This is shown through subtle
changes in tense that Woolf uses, as she switches from present ... Show more content on

One issues that was mentioned in the historical material was the idea of sexuality, as it stated
Sexuality of all stripes was on trial (1936). Homosexuality was something not yet discussed openly at
this time, so it was a new concept for sexuality to be talked about in literature. Woolf was more open
about sexuality in Mrs. Dalloway and it was mentioned about Clarissa Dalloway s daughter, Elizabeth.
Mrs. Dalloway comments that her daughter is fond of two things, her dog and Miss Kilman. Mrs.
Dalloway suspects that Elizabeth has feelings for Miss Kilman, though Mr. Dalloway thinks it to be
only a phase (2343). Mrs. Dalloway feels that it is more than a phase and says It might be falling in
love (2343). In the end of this discussion, Mrs. Dalloway concludes she would have loved Miss
Kilman! But not in this world. No. (2343). This line signifies a lot about the issue and thoughts about
homosexuality and sexuality in general. Homosexuality was not an accepted idea in society during this
time, though it was becoming talked about more. As in Mrs. Dalloway, sexuality is a taboo subject and
is being put on trial by members of

The Sandman By E. T. A Literary Analysis
The perplexing short story, The Sandman by E.T.A. Hoffman, conveys an unsettling dark tale about a
man struggling with the effect of a traumatic childhood experience. Hoffman delivers an imaginatively
chilling portrayal of the looming consequences adolescent perception can have on adult life. Studies
have shown that childhood trauma may harmfully affect the brain structure and cause children to be at
risk for psychiatric disorders later in life (Bergeron 1). Similarly, this idea is shown in Hoffman s tale
as the main character Nathaniel plunges repeatedly into despair and madness because of the fear
introduced in his youth. Although childhood fears may not always be grounded in reality,
overwhelming conditions could have a negative impact on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Nathaniel, who enjoyed the moments before bed in the company of his father, associated the Sandman
with the unwelcoming separation from his father. Soon after, his sister s nanny teasingly tells of a
darker story about the wicked Sandman, who gouges the eyes out of children who will not go to sleep,
feeding their eyes to his own kids (Hoffman 2). Furthermore, his own imaginings about the Sandman
continued to grow strong. Nathaniel s fear grew more intense when he believes his father is murdered
by Coppelius, whom he believes to be the evil Sandman. Expressively, Hoffman s story illustrates the
power of perception and the dangers of subtle progression. Imposing threats help to create harmful
visualizations. Children are especially taunted by fears and environmental influences and may silently
cope with things they do not fully understand.
Clara is disturbed after she reads the letter meant her brother Lothaire. For this reason, she replies to
Nathaniel to eagerly express her astute insight and discerning opinion into the probable cause of
Nathaniel s affliction; his memories had not been real, but merely misguided by his own imagination
(Hoffman 7 9). The influence of an individual s thought life and belief system can severely disrupt life
and relationships. For instance, when Nathaniel believed that

Evaluation Of An Action Research Project
Evaluation of an Action Research Project
In action research, an individual or a group of colleagues applies scientific methods to real life
problems or issues occurring within a work or educational environment (Conscious Educating,
2009a). According to Dr. Waddell, action research seeks to accomplish two goals, which are to
stimulate learning and make a difference (Waddell, 2007). Teachers, researchers, and administrators
all evaluate, investigate, and analyze problems or concepts in hopes of improving them and thereby
benefiting students, the classroom environment, and their own teaching practices.
Ms. Senter, an English teacher, is researching the benefits of adding a fantasy unit to her eleventh
grade English curriculum. She wants to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Ary et al. (2015), Action research allows educators to focus on an issue that directly
relates to their learning environment (p. 549).
Step 2, Plan, involves taking action gathering data or information by observing or monitoring the
effects. Ms. Senter set out to find information regarding a fantasy unit. Through her research, she was
able to locate ready made units on science fiction but not on fantasy. The benefit of action research is
that it encourages collaboration and the development of learning communities (Ary et al., 2015, p.
550). Ms. Senter collaborated with fellow English teachers, then realized that she still needs more
resources and support. Accordingly, she drew on the local library for extra support, deepening her
knowledge and gaining materials to help her design her own nine week instructional unit on fantasy to
add to her eleventh grade literature curriculum.
Step 3, Act, sees the practitioner implementing a plan of action. Ms. Senter has completed her unit on
fantasy and has developed her unit based on four major themes: (1) fantasy as a unique literary form
that emphasizes imagination and magic, with stories often set in an imaginary place; (2) fantasy s use
of elements also found in other novels (character, setting, plot, theme); (3) fantasy stories multiple
levels of meaning; and (4) fantasy s use of the usual pattern of narrative progression (background,
build up, climax, resolution). Ms. Senter selected

How The Molecules Is Capable Of Transporting Of The Cell...
Abstract The reasoning behind this experiment was to be able to specify which molecules are capable
of transporting in and out of the cell through the process of diffusion. Diffusion is the process where
molecules move from a level of high concentration to low concentration and eventually stops once the
equilibrium is reached. This study was able to demonstrate that glucose, starch, and silver nitrate were
all existing at different amounts. Results began to show after around 40 minutes, but when we first
started the experiment, no particles were present.
Introduction The technique in which molecules are able to move in and out of a cell is by the process
of diffusion. Diffusion takes the molecules from a high level of concentration to a low level of
concentration. This method will be tested by taking different solutions, such as glucose, starch, and
sodium chloride, pouring them into a test tube, adding reagents to them, and analyzing which
molecules are able transfer. Benedict s reagent will be added to glucose, iodine to starch, and silver
nitrate to sodium chloride. Glucose, starch, and sodium chloride will all be poured into the dialysis
bag, which will be noted as the cell, and will eventually be examined along with the extracellular
fluid, which is the fluid outside of the bag, or around the cell. The different directions that water is
able to flow inside and outside of the cell includes hypertonic, isotonic, and hypotonic. Hypertonic
solutions flow

The Safety Practices Of Motorcycle Accidents
Imagine the ripple effect created by losing a fellow service member, friend, or loved one due to a
motorcycle accident. Senior enlisted leaders should understand the significance of motorcycle
accidents because they have a large impact on all branches of the U.S. military. This paper will cover
the problem motorcycle accidents present to the military, discuss some of the safety practices currently
in place to reduce deaths related to motorcycle accidents, and make recommendations to help reduce
motorcycle accident deaths.
Problem
Motorcycle related deaths have a large impact on the U.S. military. The loss of a friend or loved one is
already significant, but the loss of a military member carries with it the loss of training, knowledge,
and manning to that community and branch of the military. It spans the entire service as shown when
the USS Makin Island (LHD 8) performed a burial at sea for the late Master Chief Sutton, who passed
away due to a motorcycle accident while stationed on board (Peak, 2016).
Motor vehicle accidents account for one third of the deaths among the U.S. military annually. From
1999 to 2012, there were 4,479 motor vehicle accident related deaths among members of the military,
with 25 percent attributable to motorcycle accidents (Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch,
2013). Over that period, non motorcycle motor vehicle accidents declined while motorcycle related
accidents steadily increased, accounting for a higher percentage of deaths in motor

Essay on Shakespeare s Macbeth as a Tragic Hero
Macbeth as a Tragic Hero
According to the Greek philosopher Aristotle, The best tragic plot moves the hero from prosperity to
misfortune, occasioned not by depravity, but by some great mistake he makes. The plot of Macbeth
follows these basic guidelines; throughout the play we follow the path of the main character as his life
is torn apart as a result of the colossal mistake he makes when he kills Duncan. It is for this and the
many ensuing reasons that we can say that Macbeth accurately portrays the image of a tragic hero as
outlined by Aristotle.
Aristotle s first guideline for an effective tragic hero is someone that is basically good. While Macbeth
does not exactly make sound moral decisions, toward the beginning of ... Show more content on

Worthy Gentleman! The way they are speaking portrays him as a normal soldier who helped win the
war, not with the help of godly powers, but with simple bravery. He is an average gentleman who wins
the affection of his king by his bravery, and because of this simplicity he reflects the normality of a
real person. Further on in the play he opens up more when he says, I have almost forgot the taste of
fears... At this point in the play the audience has almost lost sight of Macbeth as a real person, his cold
blooded murders disgust us so much that that he becomes something too bile to possibly be human.
We believe that no human could possibly act with the harsh brutality that Macbeth acts with, and so
becomes in imagination, some evil external force that can no longer be related to as a human
individual. However, when Macbeth says these words, he is opening himself up to the fact that he is
still human. The audience realizes that since he can still feel fear, which is a human emotion, he must
still be human. For a brief moment the audience connects with Macbeth, and there is a sense of pity
for the tragic hero because both parties realize that the end is near in sight. For a brief second we
forget about his murderous deeds, and based on the belief

Mark to Market Accounting Running head: Mark to Market Accounting Mark to Market Accounting and Ethical Issues Ethical Issues ACC 504 April 16, 2012 Abstract Economic principle s rationale for requiring guidance for financial institutions is to use mark to market accounting or fair value accounting on their financial reports. With the current economic crisis, questions have been raised as to whether or not fair value accounting is making this crisis worse. In this paper I review the history of fair value accounting and the ethics behind whether fair value accounting gives an accurate picture or is it causing a need for higher capital requirements and unnecessary concern with investors. This objections implies that a company may be cash poor with valuable assets, this ignores the fact that a company can use temporary financing to fund current operations with future cash flows. 4. Valuations may be flawed or imperfect. This is an understandable objection, because some assets are more easily valued than others. That does not mean though that fair value method should not be used when the alternative method is just as flawed. When we look at a benefit of the fair value accounting method we see that a firm will behave differently, and will take this method into consideration when they are purchasing this asset. The decisions tend to be less risky if they know that they will have to devalue the asset in the future. Bad decisions would be something that they would have to identify publicly with future marking to market. Companies would no longer have a motivation to sell assets for the benefit of recognizing an accounting gain. Historically a major financial event or crisis prompts reconsideration of accounting rules governing reported asset valuations. The credit crisis in 2008 generated reconsideration. In the 1980 s the savings and loan crisis prompted accounting rules move away from historical cost accounting. Had there been a fair value accounting system in place in the 1980 s the savings and loan crisis would have not taken years to realize. All these aspirations are directed toward ennobling man s life, lifting it from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual towards freedom. This quote, once said by Albert Einstein, represents what Al Hakam II had strived towards during his rule. Under his leadership, Córdoba experienced a golden age in the arts and sciences. Al Hakam II and his father had built a vast library filled with books from all over the world. He had also sponsored scholars, and established numerous schools throughout his territory. Al Hakam told Ghālib that he would commit every last one of his soldiers and administration to the holy war against this reprobate [fāsiq] . He and Ghālib always referred to Hasan as the reprobate [al fāsiq], the heretic [al mulhid], the rebel [al māriq], and the tyrant [al ẓālim]. In Al Hakam s eyes, his eventual triumph over Hasan marked the extension of his authority over all of the western Maghrib, and used this event to publicly announce his legitimacy as Caliph. Al Rāzī [historian] reported that Al Hakam sent a letter announcing the surrender of Hasan to his governors, to be read in all the congregational mosques. Although his victory in North Africa caused the rebellious neighboring caliphs to acknowledge his rule, the same could not be said for the Christian kings. One such king was Sancho I, who had become king of León after the death of his brother, in 955, and deposed by his cousin, Ordoño IV, in 958. After the death of Al Nāṣir, the Abbasid Caliph of Baghdad, and his expulsion, Ordoño fled to the city of Burgos [Burghush] but was arrested and sent to Córdoba. • 9. Literary Themes In The Lives Of Animals By Elizabeth Costello The novel The Lives of Animals revolves around a novelist named Elizabeth Costello. She is an animal rights activist and it so consumes her that she begins to be disgusted with the human race and the way that they treat animals. She hates meat eaters and is only focused on animal rights in her old age. Her son works at a university and while admires her work, is a bit embarrassed by it as well. Especially when Costello is going to do a lecture on animal rights at the university he works at. Her son s friends at the school disagree with her lecture as most of it emphasized the fact that human reason is not a value of life and is stupid. Following the lecture, characters approach Costello with questions regarding animal rights surrounding philosophical as well as religious aspects. One of the main literary themes present in this novel is philosophy. Throughout the book, Costello is questioned on many things, some regarding philosophical stances to which Costello replies: I want to find a way of speaking to fellow human beings that will be cool rather than heated, philosophical rather than polemical, that will bring enlightenment rather than seeking to divide us into the righteous and the sinners, the saved and the damned, the sheep and the goats (Coetzee). Coetzee encourages these philosophical questions and it is a recurrent theme in the novel. Another theme in the novel that often comes up is reasoning. Costello believes that humans use reason to classify things too much and that it is a stupid way of doing things. Throughout the novel, she teaches on the subject stating, For, seen from the outside, from a being who is alien to it, reason is simply a vast tautology (Coetzee) which proves that she believes animals should have rights whether they can reason or not. The final literary theme that is often brought up is death. Costello is not afraid to be gruesome and graphic with her word choices as she says things like, I return one last time to the places of death all around us, the places of slaughter to which, in a huge communal effort, we close our hearts. Each day a fresh holocaust, yet, as far as I can see, our moral being is untouched. We do not feel tainted. We can do anything, it seems, and come ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Who Is Winston Smith A Hero The journey of a hero usually begins with downfall and ends with success. However, with Winston it is the other way around, his journey starts at success and ends with downfall. But that shouldn t unqualify him from being a hero. Winston Smith is the hero of the novel because he shows courage, and has a strong mentality and he continuously looks past limitations. He basically was willing to do anything for what he believed in, an example of this could be when he made a promise to O Brien saying that he was going to do anything for the brotherhood even if it meant he had to hurt children. Winston could not defeat the Party, however he makes small acts which rebel against the party and by doing this he is trying to be a leader to show the other members of the party that something needs to be done. He still proves that he is a questing hero through his courage, strong mentality and his ability to look past his limitations. Even though Winston did do some bad like telling setting the rats on Julia because of his fear and suddenly loving Big Brother at the end, which most people consider hypocritical. But why not look at the positive? He repeatedly wrote down with Big Brother , and he went about his love affair with Julia which by the way he barely knew. He tries and see the party for what it is, and of course it certainly wasn t any good, he thinks very much and philosophies a lot, but that certainly does not make his live better. He s a hero because he cares about the people who he sees around him, and he tries to help them in the best way he can considering the fact that his health isn t so good. Just imagine what he was going through it must ve been extremely hard to mentally be going against something or someone when everyone else who surrounds supports them or the ideas that they represent. One endocrine gland that is incredibly important in the body is the adrenal gland, as it is essentially responsible for the fight or flight response by secreting Epinephrine, Norepinephrine, and maintaining bodily homeostasis by secreting Aldosterone and Cortisol, although Cortisol also contributes to the stress response. As it s responsible for balancing the water balance, and therefore the secretion and re absorption of Sodium and Potassium in the renal tubules, Aldosterone binds onto mineralcorticoids receptors and this complex moves to the nucleus, which then results in specific mRNA being synthesized and increases or inhibits specific proteins necessary to balance the water levels in the body (Feher 2012). Cortisol is also quite specific in it s actions , for example, it works to increase blood glucose, and therefore strongly targets the liver, muscles, and fat, to metabolize necessary glucose storage s (Nussey Whitehead 2001). Cortisol travels through the bloodstream while binded to Cortisol Binding Protein and diffuse across the outer membrane of the target cells as it s lipid soluble (Jameson Groot 2015), and binds to specific receptors, otherwise known as glucocorticoid receptors, in the cytoplasm which are already associated with heat shock proteins; as the cortisol attaches to the receptor, the heat shock protein is released (Nussey Whitehead 2001). • 18. Alcohol Abuse In Adolescence Essay Alcohol Abuse in Adolescence Khoa Nguyen San Jose State University The period of adolescence, from the age of 10 21, is one of the most critical and pivotal stages of the development of human beings. Although adolescence only covers roughly ten years, or about one seventh of the entire human lifespan, decisions and actions made during this period of time can have drastic effects on the individual further down his/her life. Part of being an adolescent is experiencing new things, and testing out different types of identities to see which fits best. Erikson, a German born American developmental psychologist, characterized this part of lifespan development as identity v.s. identity confusion(Erikson s Stages of Development, 2016). Erikson believed that during this period in an adolescent s life, they are faced with deciding who they are, what they are all about, and where they are going in life(Santrock, 2015). Part of finding that identity might come with trying new substances like alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and other harmful drugs. Unfortunately, sometimes their first try of the new substance does not become their last. Especially with alcohol, these drugs can be highly addictive and mistreated, translating to abuse. With their young unstable developing minds and with the easy accessibility and social acceptance of liquor, it seems like the adolescent age is bound on a crash course towards the abusement of alcohol. Others worry about the consequences of continued use of fossil fuels since humans are the cause of this phenomena. Finally, a majority of people are very worried about global warming becoming a reality since most mainstream scientists and scientific bodies agree that heat trapping gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) . . . have caused temperatures to rise around the globe ( New Science. . . ). The concern listed last is a perfect example of the power of hype. While many different sectors of the media and even world governments proclaim that all scientists agree global warming is occurring, a quiet majority is beginning to speak up. In 1992, a Gallup survey asked many climatologists. The survey found that 81 percent respondents believed that the global temperature had not risen over the past 100 years ( Global Warming Consensus . . . ). A survey conducted by American Viewpoint found that climatologists believe that global warming is largely a natural phenomenon by a margin of 44% to 17% ( Global Warming Consensus . . . ). Along with this survey, other untruths are appearing about claims that scientists who believe in global have signed thousands of letters warming. According to the National Center for Public Policy Research, a letter used in a report by Ozone Action was actually signed by landscape architects, a gynecologist, and a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine ( Global Warming Consensus . . . ). • 42. Characteristics Of Mrs Dalloway 1. The (American spelling) focalizer in the selection you read from Mrs. Dalloway changes at least eight times. Time also moves forward when the focalizer changes. How does Woolf create those changes? What leads us from one focalizer to another? Find three examples. Woolf uses multiple focalizers in Mrs. Dalloway to create a new point of view in the story. Woolf indicates these changes through subtle transitions that are hardly noticed at, as the story shifts to another viewpoint of a character. Sometimes we are lead between focalizers in ways, such as at the beginning of Mrs. Dalloway when Clarissa begins to transition into the past reminiscing. This is shown through subtle changes in tense that Woolf uses, as she switches from present ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One issues that was mentioned in the historical material was the idea of sexuality, as it stated Sexuality of all stripes was on trial (1936). Homosexuality was something not yet discussed openly at this time, so it was a new concept for sexuality to be talked about in literature. Woolf was more open about sexuality in Mrs. Dalloway thinks it to be only a phase (2343). Mrs. Dalloway feels that it is more than a phase and says It might be falling in love (2343). In the end of this discussion, Mrs. Dalloway concludes she would have loved Miss Kilman! But not in this world. No. (2343). This line signifies a lot about the issue and thoughts about homosexuality and sexuality in general. Homosexuality was not an accepted idea in society during this time, though it was becoming talked about more. • 43. The Sandman By E. T. A Literary Analysis The perplexing short story, The Sandman by E.T.A. Hoffman, conveys an unsettling dark tale about a man struggling with the effect of a traumatic childhood experience. Hoffman delivers an imaginatively chilling portrayal of the looming consequences adolescent perception can have on adult life. Studies have shown that childhood trauma may harmfully affect the brain structure and cause children to be at risk for psychiatric disorders later in life (Bergeron 1). Similarly, this idea is shown in Hoffman s tale as the main character Nathaniel plunges repeatedly into despair and madness because of the fear introduced in his youth. Although childhood fears may not always be grounded in reality, overwhelming conditions could have a negative impact on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nathaniel, who enjoyed the moments before bed in the company of his father, associated the Sandman with the unwelcoming separation from his father. Soon after, his sister s nanny teasingly tells of a darker story about the wicked Sandman, who gouges the eyes out of children who will not go to sleep, feeding their eyes to his own kids (Hoffman 2). Furthermore, his own imaginings about the Sandman continued to grow strong. Nathaniel s fear grew more intense when he believes his father is murdered by Coppelius, whom he believes to be the evil Sandman. Expressively, Hoffman s story illustrates the power of perception and the dangers of subtle progression. Imposing threats help to create harmful visualizations. Children are especially taunted by fears and environmental influences and may silently cope with things they do not fully understand. Clara is disturbed after she reads the letter meant her brother Lothaire. For this reason, she replies to Nathaniel to eagerly express her astute insight and discerning opinion into the probable cause of Nathaniel s affliction; his memories had not been real, but merely misguided by his own imagination (Hoffman 7 9). The influence of an individual s thought life and belief system can severely disrupt life and relationships. For instance, when Nathaniel believed that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Evaluation Of An Action Research Project Evaluation of an Action Research Project In action research, an individual or a group of colleagues applies scientific methods to real life problems or issues occurring within a work or educational environment (Conscious Educating, 2009a). According to Dr. Waddell, action research seeks to accomplish two goals, which are to stimulate learning and make a difference (Waddell, 2007). Teachers, researchers, and administrators all evaluate, investigate, and analyze problems or concepts in hopes of improving them and thereby benefiting students, the classroom environment, and their own teaching practices. Ms. Senter, an English teacher, is researching the benefits of adding a fantasy unit to her eleventh grade English curriculum. She wants to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Ary et al. (2015), Action research allows educators to focus on an issue that directly relates to their learning environment (p. 549). Step 2, Plan, involves taking action gathering data or information by observing or monitoring the effects. Ms. Senter set out to find information regarding a fantasy unit. Through her research, she was able to locate ready made units on science fiction but not on fantasy. The benefit of action research is that it encourages collaboration and the development of learning communities (Ary et al., 2015, p. 550). Ms. Senter collaborated with fellow English teachers, then realized that she still needs more resources and support. Accordingly, she drew on the local library for extra support, deepening her knowledge and gaining materials to help her design her own nine week instructional unit on fantasy to add to her eleventh grade literature curriculum. Step 3, Act, sees the practitioner implementing a plan of action. Ms. Senter has completed her unit on fantasy and has developed her unit based on four major themes: (1) fantasy as a unique literary form that emphasizes imagination and magic, with stories often set in an imaginary place; (2) fantasy s use of elements also found in other novels (character, setting, plot, theme); (3) fantasy stories multiple levels of meaning; and (4) fantasy s use of the usual pattern of narrative progression (background, build up, climax, resolution). • 45. How The Molecules Is Capable Of Transporting Of The Cell... Abstract The reasoning behind this experiment was to be able to specify which molecules are capable of transporting in and out of the cell through the process of diffusion. Diffusion is the process where molecules move from a level of high concentration to low concentration and eventually stops once the equilibrium is reached. This study was able to demonstrate that glucose, starch, and silver nitrate were all existing at different amounts. Results began to show after around 40 minutes, but when we first started the experiment, no particles were present. Introduction The technique in which molecules are able to move in and out of a cell is by the process of diffusion. Diffusion takes the molecules from a high level of concentration to a low level of concentration. This method will be tested by taking different solutions, such as glucose, starch, and sodium chloride, pouring them into a test tube, adding reagents to them, and analyzing which molecules are able transfer. Benedict s reagent will be added to glucose, iodine to starch, and silver nitrate to sodium chloride. Glucose, starch, and sodium chloride will all be poured into the dialysis bag, which will be noted as the cell, and will eventually be examined along with the extracellular fluid, which is the fluid outside of the bag, or around the cell. The different directions that water is able to flow inside and outside of the cell includes hypertonic, isotonic, and hypotonic. Hypertonic solutions flow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Safety Practices Of Motorcycle Accidents Imagine the ripple effect created by losing a fellow service member, friend, or loved one due to a motorcycle accident. Senior enlisted leaders should understand the significance of motorcycle accidents because they have a large impact on all branches of the U.S. military. This paper will cover the problem motorcycle accidents present to the military, discuss some of the safety practices currently in place to reduce deaths related to motorcycle accidents, and make recommendations to help reduce motorcycle accident deaths. Problem Motorcycle related deaths have a large impact on the U.S. military. The loss of a friend or loved one is already significant, but the loss of a military member carries with it the loss of training, knowledge, and manning to that community and branch of the military. It spans the entire service as shown when the USS Makin Island (LHD 8) performed a burial at sea for the late Master Chief Sutton, who passed away due to a motorcycle accident while stationed on board (Peak, 2016). Motor vehicle accidents account for one third of the deaths among the U.S. military annually. From 1999 to 2012, there were 4,479 motor vehicle accident related deaths among members of the military, with 25 percent attributable to motorcycle accidents (Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch, 2013). Over that period, non motorcycle motor vehicle accidents declined while motorcycle related accidents steadily increased, accounting for a higher percentage of deaths in motor ... • 47. Essay on Shakespeare s Macbeth as a Tragic Hero Macbeth as a Tragic Hero According to the Greek philosopher Aristotle, The best tragic plot moves the hero from prosperity to misfortune, occasioned not by depravity, but by some great mistake he makes. The plot of Macbeth follows these basic guidelines; throughout the play we follow the path of the main character as his life is torn apart as a result of the colossal mistake he makes when he kills Duncan. It is for this and the many ensuing reasons that we can say that Macbeth accurately portrays the image of a tragic hero as outlined by Aristotle. Aristotle s first guideline for an effective tragic hero is someone that is basically good. While Macbeth does not exactly make sound moral decisions, toward the beginning of ... He is an average gentleman who wins the affection of his king by his bravery, and because of this simplicity he reflects the normality of a real person. Further on in the play he opens up more when he says, I have almost forgot the taste of fears... At this point in the play the audience has almost lost sight of Macbeth as a real person, his cold blooded murders disgust us so much that that he becomes something too bile to possibly be human. We believe that no human could possibly act with the harsh brutality that Macbeth acts with, and so becomes in imagination, some evil external force that can no longer be related to as a human individual. However, when Macbeth says these words, he is opening himself up to the fact that he is still human. The audience realizes that since he can still feel fear, which is a human emotion, he must still be human. For a brief moment the audience connects with Macbeth, and there is a sense of pity for the tragic hero because both parties realize that the end is near in sight. For a brief second we forget about his murderous deeds, and based on the belief ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
