Free Will In The Movie The Truman Show In Philosophy
The Truman Show in Philosophy
In the movie The Truman Show Truman Burbank is the main character where he has lived all of his
life in the small town of Seahaven . There Truman has lived all of his life believing that he is living a
normal life, but his whole life he has been filmed and watched by the whole world. His reality was the
town and the universal reality was apart of watching him in his daily life and his reality. The Truman
Show is an example of the concept of Free Will because
Truman has no idea free will in his world, everything is tailored so that he does not have any say in
what really happens in his life. Descartes states that with free will that we tried to doubt all things and
even supposed that He who created us employed His unlimited powers in deceiving us in every way, .
Truman is seen as the good, innocent and pure of how the world should be. Christof, the director of
the show, states The world, the place you live in is a sick place. Seahaven is the way the world should
be. . Christof is portraying God, he controls everything that is going on in the life of Truman. Ed
Helms, the actor playing Christof, says that Christof is a godlike figure he oversees everything and has
been with Truman from birth. This concept of free will and the actors that set up his everyday routine
sets up Platos Allegory of the Cave . The prisoners in the cave are forced to stare at a wall where
shadows are cast and puppeteers are able to show the prisoners what they

Big Two Hearted River by Ernest Hemingway
Nick is a World War I veteran who, as many veterans, suffers from emotional trauma that his
experiences from the war left him with. Multiple scenes throughout the story, Big Two Hearted River,
relates to Nick, the main character s, journey toward recovery. Nick describes his surroundings in way
that parallels to his own experiences and current voyage in respect to his revival.. He takes a calming
adventure saturated with calming natural paths over hills, through woodland, and along a river to find
peace with himself and to return to his prewar state of mind. As Nick sets off on his journey, he comes
to a river in which he observes in a way that relates to his own advancing expedition: It swirled
against the log spiles of the bridge. Nick looked down into the clear, brown water, colored from the
pebbly bottom and watched the trout keeping themselves steady in the current with wavering fins. As
he watched them they changed their position by quick angles, only to hold steady in the fast water
again. (Hemingway 177) This scene is Nick s first inspiration for how he should go about recovering.
The trouts literal state in the water mirrors Nick s emotional state and recovery process. There are
rapid waters all around the fish, which compares to the rough emotional condition that Nick is facing.
Nick notices how the trout change positions and push again the swirling current in order to stay
steadily on the right track. Nick can use this to understand that he must change his own

The Imperial Gardens By Victor Hugo
The Old Summer Palace, known in Chinese as Yuanming Yuan. Emperor Kangxi named the garden as
Old Summer Palace . The first yuan means round, which hints the hoping to be a perfect person that

During the period of emperor Jiaqing ascended the throne, the Old Summer Palace was repaired and
upgraded. During the period that Daoguang emperor wielded power, the dynasty was declining, and
the national treasury was not enough. However, the emperor still put money into building the Old
Summer Palace.
Unfortunately, the catastrophe came. In 1856, with the support by the Tsarist Russia and the United
States, British and French jointly launched the second opium war. On October 6, 1860, troops broke
into the Old Summer Palace and looted valuable relics inside. The ransacking continues till the second
day. The world was sad about the destroy, as Victor Hugo wrote, Two robbers breaking into a
museum, devastating, looting and burning, leaving laughing hand in hand with their bags full of
treasures; one of the robbers is called France and the other Britain. (pg184, Ming, 2012) The troops
robbed frantically and vandalized the Old Summer Palace because they wanted the Qing government

The beautiful great garden was devastated after the two days loot. Three days later, on October 11,
1860, the British ransacked the Old Summer Palace again. The most sorrowful thing is British
lieutenant, Mitchell led 3,500 cavalries into the Old Summer Palace, set the Old Summer Palace on
fire on October 18, 1860. After the 3 days fire, the world beater garden masterpiece

Holism Attributes
Attributes Many attributes can be associated with the concept of holism. The three most prevalent
attributes are healing, caring and integral. These are the ideals that are described most often and
practice under the concept of holism.
Healing
In general terms, healing is defined as the return to health. It is restoring someone to their former state
of health or function. The American Holistic Nurses Association defines holistic nursing as all nursing
practice that has healing the whole person as its goal (Bair, 2016). Holistic nursing care encompasses
the idea of caring for the entire person, not just their physical body. Healing is a dynamic process of
recovering from a trauma or illness by working toward realistic ... Show more content on

Integral health involves the process through which we reshape basic assumptions and worldviews
about well being and see death as a natural process of living. Integral health care is a patient centered
and relationship centered caring process that includes the patient, family, and community and
conventional, integrative, and integral healthcare practitioners, services and intervention in all
endeavors. The Integral nurse is a modern day Florence Nightingale. The nurse that implements the
integral theory recognize the important of the whole person in the healing process. They are able to
promote healing through their knowing, doing, and being. Integral nursing involves a comprehensive
integral worldview and process that includes holistic theories and other paradigms; holistic nursing is
included (embraced) and transcended (goes beyond); this integral process and integral worldview
enlarges our holistic understanding of body mind spirit connections and our knowing, doing, and
being to more comprehensive and deeper levels. (Dossey Keegan,

Rotary Youth Leadership Program
This summer I attended a summer camp called Rotary Youth Leadership Program. This was a week
long camp at Guilford College sponsored by Rotary. The camp was so much fun. I learned a lot about
how to lead others and I learned about myself. One thing that I learned is that you can t talk to
everyone the same way, I can t talk to an introvert the same way I talk to an extrovert. Some introverts
like to have one on one conversations with the leader and extroverts are usually loud and are okay
with asking questions or for help in front of others. For example, my sister is an introvert and she is
very quiet and shy. If she is in a group and they are asking the members of the group their opinion, in
order for her to talk you would have to call on

Native American Settlers Analysis
Long before the Europeans traveled to North America, the Native Americans were the first ones who
technically were the owners of Vermont. Some of these Native American tribes, including the Iroquois
(Mohawks) and Abenaki, inhabited Vermont while Samuel de Champlain arrived. Champlain was a
Frenchman who was also the first European to come into contact with the Natives in Vermont. In
1609, after exploring the land, he claimed it as French property and decided to war against the Natives
for the land. Champlain befriended Canadian tribes and although the language barrier prevented them
from communicating, they had a common goal: to push the Mohawks towards the northeast. In July of
1609, Champlain and his Algonquian allies met with the Mohawks

Communication is a two way activity between two or more people and occurs through various modes,
some of which are used more commonly in some workplaces than others. Communication requires
that all parties understand a common language that is exchanged with each other. Business
Communication is communication used to promote a product, service, or organization. The business
communication message is conveyed through various channels of communication, including the
internet, print, radio, television, outdoor, and word of mouth. Business communication helps to bridge
the gap between planning and execution. Efficient communication matters because business
organizations are made up of people and also effective communication within organisation or outside
the organisation increase the image as well as goodwill of the organisation in the mind of business
partner, employees and consumer. Various research studies have been conducted on this subject and
each study has consistently ranked communication skills as crucial for managers. Typically, managers
spend 75 to 80 percent of their time engaged in some form of written or oral communication. Business
wants and need people with good communication skills. Although often termed a soft skill,
communication in a business organization provides the critical link between core functions.

Race And Gender Issues In New Media
Race and gender issues in new media
Nowadays with all the new media and technologies, it seems like that we are living in the future. A
future without racial and gender struggles. A common belief about the new media is that we will
become truly equal with the help of new media, but some people still do racist and sexist things in
new media. As Lisa Nakamura states in her essay that Racism and sexism have continue to flourish on
the internet, and indeed to some extents have even come to define it , despite our supposedly post
racial historical moment (81), I believe that new media is not the solution of the issues of race ,gender
and sexuality, but reinforcement of the ideologies behind those problems.
New media does not solve the racial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Donna Haraway advocates cyborgs in her article as a way to challenge the idea of a pure, unified
subject. A cyborg is a hybrid of machine and organism (Haraway, 291) which blur the boundaries of
binary categories.. Haraway argues that there is no essential unity . In the case of new media, the
representations of race and gender are depicted as binaries. White/ nonwhite. Male/ Female. New
media reinforce the ideologies of race and gender. However, in reality people of color don t all act in
the same way, and not the men or women are the same. Furthermore, race and gender consciousnesses
reinforce dualism which is used to create dominance and oppression. At the level of ideology, we see
translations of racism and colonialism into languages of development and under development, rats and
constrains of modernization (Haraway, 301). Haraway argues that racism was used as a tool to help
colonialism by helping the under developed counties to be civilized . The primitive stereotypes of the
people of color helps to oppress the people of color. Therefore, race, gender and sexuality should be
represented in a more complicated way in new media instead of stereotypes. For example, the gender
and racial representations of the characters in Journey are rather ambiguous. The armless body and the
veil covered face portray an non stereotypical racial characters

Prior to the liberalisation era the Indo American reached their pinnacle during this period. The Luce
Celler Act of 1946, signed by President Harry Truman provided naturalisation and immigration rights
to Indians and Fillipinos. Prior to the passage of this legislation, immigration had been denied to all
Asians since the National Quota Act of 1924. And prior to this there were probably never more than
10000 Indian Americans in the United States to effectively press for a special exception on their
behalf. The early efforts for the LuceCeller legislation were galvanized by Representatives Clare
Booth Luce (R Conn.) and EmannuelCeller (D N.Y.), who were both enthusiastic advocates of
Democracy in Asia. The legislation was first proposed in congress during 1943, out of gratitude for
the Indian and Filipino effort and support for the allied cause during the second World War, the
legislature gained further momentum around the war s end due to the support amassed by the astute
lobbying efforts of various pro Indian organizations such as the India League of America, the National
Committee for India s Freedom, and the Indian Chamber of Commerce, with further support from the
India Welfare League. It is noteworthy that most of these organisations were found or led by the
multitude of freedom fighters that had been exiled or chased away from the country by the colonial

Analysis Of James Baldwin s The Blues
Sonny s Blues, a short story by famed African American author James Baldwin, is the story of two
bothers. Other famous stories of two brothers include both The Prodigal Son parable and the story of
Cain and Abel, both from which Baldwin clearly draws inspiration from. Baldwin grew up with many
religious teachings, as his adoptive father, David Baldwin, was a preacher. Though the relationship
between father and son was not enviable, Baldwin still grew up active in his religion (James Baldwin
Biography). Baldwin, despite growing up in the Baptist church with a preacher for a father began to
convert to Pentecostalism began in his early teenage years when he accompanied friends to a
Pentecostal church, where, at the age of fourteen, he became street preacher (James Baldwin
Biography). Of those years as a preacher, Baldwin recalled, Those three years in the pulpit I didn t
realize it then that is what turned me into a writer, really, dealing with all that anguish and that despair
and that beauty. Many of his works prominently feature religion, and mimic the bible in language and
tone (James Baldwin About the Author). In Sonny s Blues, and many other of Baldwin s writings, the
figure of the musician represents a move towards an anti institutional spirituality and suggests the
ways in which Baldwin was becoming, not less secular, but move aware of the need to distinguish
between the structured religion of the church and the authenticity of a self spirituality, a

example of an attempt at genocide. With around six million people dieing within twelve years.
Although there were some groups trying to bring the Holocaust to an end an example is the French
Resistance groups. The term French Resistance is a term used for multiple groups that were anti Nazi.

Execution Poem Analysis
In this poem Execution written by Edward Hirsch tells a philosophical reflection expressed with
sadness about a sicken high school football coach who is extremely passionate. The overview of this
poem is centered around his favorite word execution. Execution is expressed in multiple ways in this
poem. Life was about football for the coach, he would pour in his blood sweat and tears to the game.
There was no that he received every inch of effort from his player. Countless hours of preparation,
practice, and energy was devoted. You would think working this hard would bring upon serious
exhaustion, but the coach was like an energizer bunny, he would keep going. Unfortunately this
lifestyle caught up with him, the speaker says he developed cancer. I believe that he spent too much
time on the game of football. Ultimately this is what lead to his illness, the neglection of his self for
the game that he loved. Details from the poem will be used to argue my claim. These details are
relevant to how the coach acted and his philosophies. The significance that we get out of my claim is
thought provoking. The type of execution he was preaching to the team went into full effect in the
form of cancer towards him. Let me start off by saying that the coach had great intentions for the way
he coached. Hardnosed, no nonsense guy, who taught discipline. Learning the art of discipline helps
you on the field, but the results are even more notable off the field in everyday life. You cannot go
wrong with being a disciplined individual. Real big on fundamentals, a perfectionist at teaching them.
The speaker states, And had perfect unquestioning faith in the fundamentals of blocking and talking,
the idea of warfare without suffering or death, the concept of teammates moving in harmony like
planets. An architect at work piecing together a formula to prepare his team the best way he can.
Losing was not an option, the speaker says that the coach despised losing. I personally hate losing
myself so I can relate. Losing to me is like getting stabbed in the back. It hurts tremendously to not
come out victorious. I do not fault the coach for putting the team through strenuous drills or drilling
formations and plays in their head.

Essay On Eyewitness Testimony
Eye witness testimony is an unreliable way of testifying because age differences can be easily
influenced and gender roles has an impact in the accuracy for memory recalling.
A study conducted of one hundred and ninety six individuals living in Madrid at the time of the
terrorist attack demonstrated that age differences affects the accuracy of eye witness testimonies
(Vallet, Manzanero, Arótegui, Garcia, 2017). Adolescents and children are both influenced differently
by emotions and the quality of their memory. With that being said, adults performed better on
recalling much accurate details such as sound, odor, central information, visuals, and feelings (Vallet,
et al., 2017). The younger group of individuals, children, had doubts on recalling their memories of
the event. This is due to the fact that depending on the age and level of development that an individual
is in, the strength in their memory can be easily influenced (Vallet, et al., 2017).
Another study reveal that females performed better than males for the accuracy of memory recalling

Adults can recall memory better than a child would because of the level of development they are in
(Vallet, et al., 2017). A child can also be easily manipulated by leading questions that they were
subjected to and say what they think the individuals want them to say. In addition, children also create
false memories at times (ABC News, 2005). Men have greater confidence recalling their memory
which makes them seem reliable, but it is not a reason why eye witness testimony is reliable. There is
an exception where an eye witness testimony done by a female can be reliable, it is for description of
the place and appearance of a person. However, with all things, eye witness testimony done by a
female should still be taken with a bit of

Deductive Reasoning Case
Using deductive reasoning to go over this case I found it difficult to come to just one logical
conclusion with so many general statements by these suspects. I first took notes about the case;
including and highlighting the differences in each suspect s story which I then used to formulate my
theory. After carefully reviewing this case I feel that Melissa Baker is suspect number one in this case.
Not only did Melissa act too calmly when she was giving her statements, a calmness that seems
questionable for a widow whom has just found her husband murdered in their home. Melissa also
makes general statements that seem like she has an issue with how much attention her husband John is
giving to the football games during the season which can only be taken as jealousy. Melissa also stated
that she saw Joe in the home before she left for the shopping trip, this statement is inconsistent with
the other two suspects involved and their statements. Melissa stands to inherit the business that her
husband John has left behind. Another strange fact in this case is that the shopping bags that Melissa

War is not a thing that to many people are able to describe, but there are the select few that can and

country, some woman does not want their husband going and being killed , and some have to live with
the thought that they have to kill someone it all depends on the way you look at it. There are four
poets that exhibits and that is Vera Brittain: Perhaps , Wilfred Owen Dulce et Decorum Est, Alan

Rendezvous, he shows how people fear death. He shows that even though people know that they are

men keep their pledge to fight for their country And I to my pledged word am true, I shall not fail that

Brooke is showing the good thoughts that a soldier would have if they felt like they was going to die

Essay about Post-Depression Industrialization in Latin...
Post Depression Industrialization in Latin America
For most of the first century after independence, all republics in Latin America followed an economic
policy of export led growth based on primary product exports. The tremendous economic crisis of the
1930s that had a crushing and widespread impact on Latin America; precipitated by the global
economic depression, forced Latin American nations to re evaluate this exogenous economic growth
model and to transform their economic policies in the direction of long neglected diversification of the
economy, particularly toward an endogenous model oriented to industrialization.

During this period, the economic policies of Latin American governments were relatively single
mindedly oriented to enhance the export sector, while doing little to promote any type of
diversification of the economy or domestic industrial economic development. Swift discussed these
government policies:
In addition to facilitating the system of landholding and labor use for the production of exports,
governments used tax exemptions, subsidies for new plantings, and waivers for duties on imported
inputs to further development of the export sector. The state also used its borrowing power to obtain
funds abroad for the infrastructure that supported this sector.
By the end of the nineteenth century most Latin American countries had firmly established outward
oriented economic structures. The pace of domestic income growth and wealth accumulation was
almost entirely dependant upon external factors, such as favourable demand and prices for the primary
exports of Latin America. While the world economy

Movie theaters, two malls, ice cream shops and Splash Down Water Park were found to be main
competitors. Positioning on the map consisted of Duration of Expenses on the vertical axis and

correlate with proximity and profit. As the Renegades have become an established minor league team,
it s in another s teams interest to locate where a Minor League team isn t situated. A team situated in
close proximity to Dutchess stadium would not obtain the same profit as it would be directly
competing against an already well established company. The new entrant would fiscally be making a
better decision if it were to locate a highly dense population area with few barriers of entry unlike
Dutchess County. There are three towns with substitutes that are main competitors to the Renegades.

Bartleby The Scrivener Response Essay
In nearly all situations of life, we find ourselves faced with the familiar face of a blank wall: Ominous,
judging, begrudging walls. Some tend to be symbolic; others tend to be quite literal, both cases
leaving us puzzled at how to get around such an obstruction. In Herman Melville s short story
Bartleby, The Scrivener, the title character faces quite a similar dilemma. All throughout the story,
Bartleby faces an assortment of walls, most notably a blackened brick wall right outside his office
window. This wall becomes a preoccupation for him, leaving him in what one can only call a dead
wall reverie (Melville 17). By the end of the story the walls go from an enclosure to, quite literally, a
tomb for the distraught writer. Over the years, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are a common theme in Bartleby , from the walls themselves being given a grim description This
view might have been considered rather tame, than otherwise, deficient in what the landscape painters
call life (Melville 2). To Bartleby s own implicit demise. Whether it be a result of being pushed away
from human contact, rejecting the concept of socialization, or an inability to relay what must be said to
others, Bartleby s situation lead to his descent into hopelessness and death. Such points are addressed
in Steven Ryan s interpretation, in which he states: ...one could easily understand the...logic that would
see within Bartleby s dead wall reverie as...a recognition of the cosmic void (death,
isolation...limitations) (Ryan 42). For hours upon hours, Bartleby stands and stares aimlessly at the
wall outside his window and at the walls of the prison. He refuses to work, as he also refuses to work.
In the end, we alongside Bartleby realize there is no true escape for him except prison or his own
inevitable death. By rejecting all basic necessities of life, Bartleby seems to come to his own
acceptance of the latter, but is prepared to face the former with the same motives; and that he does.
The office walls and prison walls are essentially the same to him, as he knows that both will do the
same thing to keep him contained. In the same manner, the walls of approaching

Leda And The Swan Yeats Summary

W. B. Yeats: Leda and the Swan
In the poem Leda and the Swan , William Butler Yeats retells the story of the Greek god Zeus taking
on the body of a swan to rape an innocent mortal, Leda. Yeats was mesmerized by the unique
relationships between mortals and gods in ancient stories; this is what triggers his urge to write a poem
about this tale. Yeats includes many references to ancient Greek mythology. He expects readers to
know the background on this Greek history when reading through the poem to get a full
understanding. He also uses his words to make a strong impact on the readers minds. The themes in
this poem are very diverse, but the ones of beastiality, wordplay and Greek history are most effective.
The language in the text creates an intense ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yeats assumes that the readers know about the Greek myth of Zeus, sky and weather god, taking the
form of a swan to violate Leda, Aetolian princess who later becomes a famous Spartan Queen. The
opening lines start off presumably in Leda s perspective when he states, A sudden blow (Yeats 1),
meaning that the Swan harshly approaches Leda and knocks her off her feet. We now can assume that
the swan is larger than normal for it to have such extreme power to induce a great deal of force onto
an unexpecting woman. In line 4, He (Yeats 4) is written for the first time so readers now know that
the swan is of male nature; this explains the large size and strength of the swan. In the following
stanza, through the first line Yeats chooses the word vague (Yeats 5) to describe how Leda is so
terrified and disoriented when being violated by the swan. This can lead the reader to wonder if Leda
could have even prevented the violation? The answer is clear, it would be incredibly absurd that she
could have. When Yeats asks, And how can body (Yeats 7), he is

The Progresive Reform Movement Essay examples
The Progressive Reform Movement played an instrumental role in uplifting American society to new
heights. The movement was fairly successful in curing the ills brought on by the massive industrial
growth of the late 19th century. Rich executives who had created monopolies and trusts were deemed
to have become too powerful, and political imbalances were ruled to be unacceptable. Progressive
reform was a cornerstone of the early 1900s and was the issue that defined several presidencies. The
Progressive Movement was a result of a century of economic and social neglect. It strived to correct
the economic, social, political, and moral justices that had plagued the 19th century and to instill
fairness and equal rights for all. Two key goals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This modification of the Constitution gave women the right to vote, and effectively created a whole
new slant on politics. Corrupt governments began to falter because of the new voting bloc and
political party hierarchies began to crumble. The Progressive Movement not only revolution the
political landscape of America, but also molded a brand new economic infrastructure. Prior to the
movement, the US government enacted a policy of laissez faire towards the economy. From the early
1800s till the panics of 1893 and 1907 the economy boomed. Politicians were skeptical of pushing
reform because they feared that public opinion favored less regulation. However, by the turn of the
century this began to change. Due to the Panics of 1893 and 1907 Americans began to demand
change. The rise of a more liberal middle class began to change the political outlook of the early
1900s. These people favored fairness in the workplace and more regulation. Two key actions taken by
the government to support these goals included the creation of the Federal Reserve and the Federal
Trade Commission. The Federal Reserve Board became the central banking system of America. First,
it removed the lack of elasticity in the American currency. It also prevented privately run banks from
exploiting the currency or banding together in order to drive up premiums and fees. The Federal
Reserve was effective in driving down economic corruption and regulating the economy. The Federal

Boater Hats Research Papers
Fall season is just around the curb and many of us are thinking of what to wear and what type of
changes should be done in our wardrobes in general. Aside from the prominence of colors that are
well balanced and earthy, fall is easily one of the best seasons to wear elegant pieces and plush
ensembles without really looking over the top. The general calm can be seen on every waking corner
as people get to put onto their skin the most comfortable materials and colors that are not striking
unlike the ones used during summer. The emergence of fall inspired clothing would also mean that

Missing White Woman Syndrome Summary
The disappearance and death of Maylin has created an awareness of not only her disappearance, but of
many other Latina s who have gone missing. This article states that missing Latina s are not getting
the news coverage they deserve. It also talks about how white women are innocent victims in
disappearance scenarios, whereas black women and Latina s are involved in activities that in some
form lead to their kidnapping and death. This article explains how more news coverage on missing
women of color could make a difference in whether they are found alive or dead. This is something
that is true because the more the public is informed on missing people the more they will be able to
help out with these cases. This article is relevant to my topic because it will help support my claim on
the lack of news coverage of missing women of color. Missing White Woman Syndrome is described
as the extensive media coverage missing white females receive. In many cases these missing women
are rich, attractive, and young. This article states that there are missing children who are non white

Canada Family Structure
Canada is a popular country that neighbors the United States of America and was originally controlled
by the French and British. The nation of Canada has a primarily cold climate and its citizens are
usually stereotyped as friendly and over apologetic. Canada seems to have good relations with many
other countries, which could explain its ethnic and cultural diversity. Despite it s close proximity to
America, the prime family structure of Canada differs slightly. In Canada, there are many families
who don t follow the typical nuclear family structure. A nuclear structure consists of two parents and
their children, while most married couples in Canada do not have children. In Canada in 2011, only
31.9% of family consisted of two parents with children while 35.1% consisted of just a married
couple. Single parents made up 16.3% of the family population, common law couples without children
made up 9.4%, and common law couples without children made up 7.3%. Of all the families with
children, 12.6% were step families. Despite the types of families varying throughout the country of

differ between the cultures. While some families may consist of only a married couple due to choice,
others (such as the First Nations ) are part of this structure due to the death of the child/children or the
inability to reproduce. Other Canadian cultures may not have children due to the lack of economic
security. No matter the reason, it seems as though minor cultures are more likely to have a family of

Government Of The People By Abraham Lincoln
INTRO
Democracy is eloquently described by Abraham Lincoln as government of the people, by the people,
for the people . The quote by Lincoln though, is perhaps the most straightforward, compelling
explanation ensuring that even the laymen understand the fundamentals of the term. The subject
matter that is required in this essay is to determine differences in the quality of democracy. This is
regarded as the dependant variable, which is the outcome that needs explanation. This can be
explained using the independent variables, the economic factors and cultural factors which will be
used to explain the phenomena of the dependant variable. 3 countries will be looked at in this essay to
explain the given theories. The countries are Tunisia, Algeria and Libya. All 3 countries have been
picked having many similarities but when it comes to the quality of democracy, they vary. All 3
countries are vastly Muslim, they border each other and they are all situated in the north Africa.
However the Polity score of each country differs with Tunisia Algeria and Libya scoring 7, 2 and 0
respectively. Libya s polity score was taken that of 2014. In measuring the difference in quality of
democracy it needs to be ensured that the countries are as similar as possible therefore enabling the
difference in the quality of democracy distinguishable.

Peyote and Native American Culture
Peyote was originally described in 1560, however it was not until the middle of the nineteenth century
that botanists were able to conduct field research and correctly classify the cactus (Anderson, 1980).
Field studies have concluded that there are two distinct populations of peyote which represent two
species. The first and most common, Lophophora williamsii extends from southern Texas reaching
south to the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi. The second and least common of the two species is
Lophophora difusa, which occurs in the dryer terrain of the Mexican state of Queretaro. This species

Also it should be noted that depending on the tribe or group leader, elements of Christianity figure
prominently through the ceremony (www. peyote. net). The majority of the peyotism practiced in the
United States can be identified with the Native American Church (NAC). There are many divisions of
the NAC, and each chapter is composed of several auxiliary chapters or moons, Each chapter has
officers who are trained to carry out the various tasks associated with the peyote ceremony. The most
prominent position is that of Road Chief who is responsible for governing the main elements of the
meeting as well as leading the participants down The Peyote Road or the way of learning to live life
well (www.peyote.net), There are other offices held in the ceremony such as Cedar Man, Fire Man,
Drum Man, and Earth Mother, and while many chapters have their own variances of the ceremony,
many share common ceremonial elements along with the adherence to the practice of avoiding
alcohol, devotion to family, and general moral living (www.peyote.net).
The ritualistic practice of peyote and shamanism, are commonly linked, however in the case of the
Mescalero Apache Tribe the use of peyote in shaman rites had anything but a transcendental effect
which eventually lead to the abolishment of peyote from shamanistic ceremony. A lack of harmony

Dee also thought the same, but her knowledge makes her has a different perspective with the quilt.
She thought that she knows what to do with their family heritage more than Mama and Maggie. She
thought that family heritage should be preserve in order to make it unbroken. She was afraid that the
value of the quilt would disappear if the quilt becomes an everyday use. So, she would hang it, as if
that was the only thing to protect the quilt (Paragraph 71, 72). Her thought to protect the quilt is
actually inversely with the rule of the family history. Mama said that the quilt is belongs to Maggie
because Mama thought that the quilt should become an everyday use, not to become an object to be
displayed. Dee thought that Mama and Maggie do not understand about the value of the quilt and their
heritage (Paragraph 79, 80, and 81). But the truth is Dee who doesn t have a true understanding with
the family traditions. Viewing it as a Museum s object is disregard the real family traditions.
Then, what makes the story becomes more ironic is when Dee, along with her knowledge said to
Maggie that she has to make something new for herself. She thought that she respects their heritage,
but on the other hand, she also said that Maggie should go out of the ancient and old fashioned ways
of thinking and living (Paragraph 81). It means that, Dee told Maggie not too bound to their culture

Aristotle And Plato s Philosophy
)
Professor Armstrong
CC
5 October 2015
Aristotle and Plato are famous for their many works in the philosophical field. Specifically, the
Republic by Plato and Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle seem to be their most popular works. In these
works they discuss things that are needed to achieve the good life both on an individual level and on a
societal level. There is some variance between what the two philosophers think can create the good
life. They explore the concepts of eudaimonia, virtue, and soul with the same end result of happiness
for all. Through analysis of each philosophers work, we can see that both Plato s definition of the
good life and his method to achieve it is far superior to Aristotle s. Furthermore, this concept of the
good life is best supported through democratic form of government. Eudaimonia is a Greek word
commonly translated as happiness. It consists of the words eu (good) and daimon (spirit). It is a
central concept of both Aristotle s and Plato s works. In their works eudaimonia was a term that
referred to the highest moral good. Therefore, eudaimonia is the central focus of practical philosophy.
Both Aristotle and Plato explore the concept of eudaimonia by theorizing what it really is and how it
can be achieved on an individual level and on a larger, societal scale. Both Aristotle and Plato have
their own distinct definitions of what eudaimonia consists of. Plato has a three part definition.

The Importance Of Baning The Banning Of The Burqa Ban
In 2010 the French Parliament passed a law that banned the wearing of the burqas in public. The
banning of the burqa was supported by French president Nicolas Sarkozy he argued that the burqa ban
was not a religious issue it was a question of women s freedom and dignity. There is a lot of people
who disagree with the law and say they should be able to dress how they want without being arrested
or getting a fine. The fine for wearing a burqa in public is $150 euro that is 217 US dollars. Anyone
found forcing a women to cover her face or to wear a burqa is faced with a 30,000 euro fine that is

The Story Of An Hour And The Yellow Wallpaper Analysis
Marriage is a commitment and accepting one another for each other s qualities and flaws. In the 18th
century, a happy marriage reflected well to society, however, behind closed doors the union
represented restrictive commitment. In the past, women viewed marriage as confinement; they had no
options to escape, and husbands controlled every aspect of their wives live. Women were unable to
express themselves socially, mentally, emotionally, and physically, although some found relief to
express their feeling through writing journals and writing to female friends. Two women that utilize
writing to enlighten society and women were Kate Chopin and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Kate Chopin
and Charlotte Perkins Gilman s vision inspired women to reveal their independence and opinions
through the use of symbolism, setting, and theme in their short stories, The Story of an Hour and The
Yellow Wallpaper.
Through these both stories the authors demonstrates how both of the main characters work to identify
their freedom, to describe this they use symbolism to represent this emotion. Kate Chopin, the writer
of the short story, The Story of an Hour, utilizes symbolist phrases to express Mrs. Mallard s feelings
towards finding her freedom and escape from her controlling husband. For example, when Kate
Chopin wrote, She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver

Imagine being a rabbit; a vertebrate and warm blooded species. Hopping around an open field and
eating all greens. All of sudden, you were captured by an unknown human. You start to rattle around
your cage figuring out how to escape. About twenty five million and 30 million animals are exploited
in experiments; half are only used through education (Donna 7).
A 40% is applied in basic research, the 26% for drug development, a 20% are examined for products,
and the 14% that is left is applied on education and miscellaneous (Donna 5).
The inhumane cruelty affects the innocent creatures. Animals should only be used for education, and
research purposes. Therefore, regulations must increase on animal protection. Increasing policies ...

For instances, those involved in auctions and animals sold publicly are to keep records. On the
contrary, it does not support all animal rights; the law ought to emphasis those out in business too.
Beyond that, in 1976 adjustments were made in the amendment. In fact, this time it includes more
steps to those companies in the animal testing business (Donna 16). Each corporation is required to
register and keep records of the species. Again it had affected those who are employed in auctions,
operators, dealers, and exhibitors to be certified. Thus certified employees must submit an annual
report to congress. The reports helped the Congressmen keep track of the species; so living things
would not be mistreated. Moreover the act expanded dogs safety. Hounds were only acceptable for
breeders, security, hunting, and as house hold pets. But there is a catch to it; dog owners must provide
treatments (Donna 8). Signifying hounds would receive yearly check up on their satiability of well
nutrients. However the act was expanding, it excluded most of the rights towards animals. In addition
to the amendment, in 1985 it was re modified again. It incorporated the labs and the environment of
the organisms. The act demanded laboratories to provide exercise and a physical environment, to
balance the pain and stress for the species, and minimize the use of drugs (Donna 8). Despite the
reduction of drugs it does not improve the consumption towards the

Complementary And Alternative Medicine ( Cam ) Essay
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) had risen considerably in the past decades. The use
of CAM is widespread. Many individual countries have used the term for the CAM definitions
approach when discussing the practices and products. The interest and use of CAM in healthcare
systems are integrating various methods with origins outside of mainstream medicine for treatment
and health promotion. Different countries have view and used CAM within their regulations.
Body
General definition of CAM
Firstly, one of the most widely used for CAM definitions is, the World Health Organization
(WHO)defined CAM as: a broad set of health care practices that are not part of a country s tradition
and not integrated into the dominant health care system. Other terms sometimes used to describe these
health care practices includes natural medicine , non conventional medicine and holistic medicine.
(World Health Organisation, 2004).Secondly, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) National
Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) come across with CAM defined : as a
group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently
considered to be part of conventional medicine.Alternative medicine often refers to the use of
therapies as substitutes for biomedical treatment, and complementary medicine refers to the use of
such therapies in conjunction with biomedicine with CAM. (NCCAM, 2007).

Perceptual Processing Essay
The Special Role of Faces in Perceptual Processing Attention is often diverted by irrelevant distractors
despite the need to concentrate on a task, and this is prevalent in daily life (e.g. ads pop ups while
working on the computer, signboards while driving). The perceptual load theory suggests that
attention is an automatic process with limited capacity all stimuli will be processed within its capacity
limits (Lavie, 1995). In accordance with the theory, interference from irrelevant distractors is
dependent on the amount of perceptual load. Task irrelevant stimuli would be unattended in high load
conditions since information processing is at its full capacity, preventing further processing, whereas
in low load conditions, spare capacity spills over to process the irrelevant distractors (Lavie Cox,
1997). Several studies have supported the perceptual load theory and the capability of irrelevant
distractors to be processed automatically. In a visual search task, performance in which there was an

Biblical Message Of The Lottery By Shirley Jackson
The author starts by presenting a beautiful, perfectly calm day of June, speaking about people that
gather in the square of the small village for a lottery, a short event that will allow to these villagers to
get home for noon dinner . (134) While gather in the square, people communicate humorously one to
another or simply speak about everyday life. When, at the end of the story the lottery proves to be a
macabre event meant to choose one of them to be killed by lapidation, the reader understands with
stupor that the villagers merely consider the event something normal, a routine, and they will stop
immediately to think deeper about it. The children symbol of innocence, are present there, playing,
speaking and eventually made a great pile of stones in one corner of the square . (135) It seems so
normal to think ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mrs. Hutchinson s late arrival in the square and the special interest shown by the author in describing
her enthusiastic attitude are clues to establish a connection between the outcome of the event and the
character involved in the outcome. What could come in reader s mind is the biblical message So the
last will be the first (Mathew 20:16). The last signal of the story suggesting the tragic end is the black
spot on Mrs. Hutchinson s lottery paper. This is the moment when it becomes evident that the lottery
is not what was expected. The author closes the circle of the narrative by revealing the purpose of the
pile of stones gathered by the children at the beginning of the story. The stones are the weapons used
for killing the person chosen in the lottery, Mrs. Hutchinson. At the end, the victim s enthusiasm
becomes dread and the beautiful scene from the beginning of the story becomes

Failures Of The Normandy Invasion
The Normandy Invasion was the largest seaborne invasion in the history war. The invasion allowed for
the Allies to open up a second front in the west against the Nazi s to relieve pressure off the Russians
in the east. The Russians at the time had long been engaging the Nazis in the east fighting roughly
75% of the German army and after years of brutal combat were making a true counter offensive and
making extreme headway and pushing the Nazis back across Russia and back into to Germany.
The results of D day and the Normandy landings were successful to say the least, ever so costly the
operation known as Operation Overlord resulted of the Allied landing over 100,000 troops. Much of
the success at Normandy can be attributed to several different ... Show more content on

First and foremost, the invasions as a whole, was almost scrapped due to the inclement weather. The
invasion was scheduled to be carried out on June 5th instead of June 6th due to high winds, rough surf
and extreme cloud coverage as well as rain. This would have prevented the Allies from having any
sort of air support which inevitably allowed for so much success. Additionally, the tides and surf
would have made Allied landings significantly more dangerous than they already were considering the
impact of direct and indirect fire as well as small arms and machine gun fire, the troops have had to
battle the sea as well. Luckily for the Allied side the weather cleared up just in time for the invasion.
Also, many of the minefields and other landing obstacles that were supposed to be destroyed by
bombers were left untouched, as low visibility caused for many of the bomb to be dropped
inaccurately further inland. To continue, many of the Allied supplies and vehicles were unable to make
it further inland to fuel a quick inland advance. Lastly, the Allies also suffered from poor intelligence,
which proved to cost significant losses an Allied lifes on objectives that were no longer the same as

NFL Protest Observation
Fila Bates Patrick Jehle Writing and Rhetoric II November 8, 2017 NFL Protest Observation The
American flag represents this so called notion of equality and patriotism, even though it was used
alongside with the pledge of allegiance to capitalize on the people s love of the country. The current
controversy is that protest at NFL games is not only disrespectful to the country, but is also a
disrespect to our armed forces who fought for our constitutional rights, this paper is simply an
observation piece that will discuss the various arguments surrounding the NFL protest and will
explore people s current feelings toward the silent protest. Many members of the U.S military have
come to Collin Kaepernick s defense in the aftermath of the protest. Kellie Johnson a former military
personal talk about how the protests are simply representations of their freedom of expression and that
people should stop focusing on the anthem and start focusing on the reasons for the protest. She even
speculates that majority of people who complain about kneeling are the same ones in the stands of
sporting events looking at their phones, which is a form of disrespect to the flag. So, you can start to
see that the same people who worship the flag commit actions that devalues its worth in America as
well. The factiousness symbolized in the American flag distorts people s perspective of how equality
and justice should be upheld in this country. Meghan Lindsey a season finalist contestant on the voice,

Symbolism Of The Apple In Jeanne Duprau s The Giver
Symbol
In The Giver, the apple symbolizes difference. The symbol of the apple occurs in the story when Jonas
and Asher are playing catch when ...suddenly Jonas had noticed ... the apple had changed (30). By
looking at this quotation, we see that Jonas is an imperfection in the genetic engineering because he
can see color. Somehow the committee notices this and makes Jonas a receiver and hides him away
with the Giver in the annex room. This is important because in this community everything is perfect.
Perfect in The Giver is no choice because without choice there is no war, fighting, or even small
arguments, but also no emotion. Going back to the symbolism of the apple, it represents how Jonas is
different from the rest of the community in how he can see beyond. The community may look utopian
from the outside but from the inside it really is dystopian because there is no choice, they kill babies
and the elderly, and you aren t even allowed to choose who you marry and how many kids you have.
Imagery
In The City of Ember the future is very bleak and lackluster. Blackouts and the depletion of necessary
items such as light bulbs puts a really dark and broken down image in one s head. The author, Jeanne
DuPrau describes the city as falling apart and in need of repair: They must not leave the city for at
least 200 years (1). By looking at this quotation, we can see that the people of Ember needed to leave
around more than half a century ago because 200 years was the

  • 2. Free Will In The Movie The Truman Show In Philosophy The Truman Show in Philosophy In the movie The Truman Show Truman Burbank is the main character where he has lived all of his life in the small town of Seahaven . There Truman has lived all of his life believing that he is living a normal life, but his whole life he has been filmed and watched by the whole world. His reality was the town and the universal reality was apart of watching him in his daily life and his reality. The Truman Show is an example of the concept of Free Will because Truman has no idea free will in his world, everything is tailored so that he does not have any say in what really happens in his life. Descartes states that with free will that we tried to doubt all things and even supposed that He who created us employed His unlimited powers in deceiving us in every way, . Truman is seen as the good, innocent and pure of how the world should be. Christof, the director of the show, states The world, the place you live in is a sick place. Seahaven is the way the world should be. . Christof is portraying God, he controls everything that is going on in the life of Truman. Ed Helms, the actor playing Christof, says that Christof is a godlike figure he oversees everything and has been with Truman from birth. • 3. Big Two Hearted River by Ernest Hemingway Nick is a World War I veteran who, as many veterans, suffers from emotional trauma that his experiences from the war left him with. Multiple scenes throughout the story, Big Two Hearted River, relates to Nick, the main character s, journey toward recovery. Nick describes his surroundings in way that parallels to his own experiences and current voyage in respect to his revival.. He takes a calming adventure saturated with calming natural paths over hills, through woodland, and along a river to find peace with himself and to return to his prewar state of mind. As Nick sets off on his journey, he comes to a river in which he observes in a way that relates to his own advancing expedition: It swirled against the log spiles of the bridge. Nick looked down into the clear, brown water, colored from the pebbly bottom and watched the trout keeping themselves steady in the current with wavering fins. As he watched them they changed their position by quick angles, only to hold steady in the fast water again. (Hemingway 177) This scene is Nick s first inspiration for how he should go about recovering. The trouts literal state in the water mirrors Nick s emotional state and recovery process. There are rapid waters all around the fish, which compares to the rough emotional condition that Nick is facing. Nick notices how the trout change positions and push again the swirling current in order to stay steadily on the right track. Nick can use this to understand that he must change his own ... During the period that Daoguang emperor wielded power, the dynasty was declining, and the national treasury was not enough. However, the emperor still put money into building the Old Summer Palace. Unfortunately, the catastrophe came. In 1856, with the support by the Tsarist Russia and the United States, British and French jointly launched the second opium war. These are the ideals that are described most often and practice under the concept of holism. Healing In general terms, healing is defined as the return to health. It is restoring someone to their former state of health or function. The American Holistic Nurses Association defines holistic nursing as all nursing practice that has healing the whole person as its goal (Bair, 2016). A common belief about the new media is that we will become truly equal with the help of new media, but some people still do racist and sexist things in new media. As Lisa Nakamura states in her essay that Racism and sexism have continue to flourish on the internet, and indeed to some extents have even come to define it , despite our supposedly post racial historical moment (81), I believe that new media is not the solution of the issues of race ,gender and sexuality, but reinforcement of the ideologies behind those problems. A cyborg is a hybrid of machine and organism (Haraway, 291) which blur the boundaries of binary categories.. Haraway argues that there is no essential unity . In the case of new media, the representations of race and gender are depicted as binaries. White/ nonwhite. Male/ Female. New media reinforce the ideologies of race and gender. However, in reality people of color don t all act in the same way, and not the men or women are the same. Furthermore, race and gender consciousnesses reinforce dualism which is used to create dominance and oppression. At the level of ideology, we see translations of racism and colonialism into languages of development and under development, rats and constrains of modernization (Haraway, 301). Haraway argues that racism was used as a tool to help colonialism by helping the under developed counties to be civilized . The primitive stereotypes of the people of color helps to oppress the people of color. Other famous stories of two brothers include both The Prodigal Son parable and the story of Cain and Abel, both from which Baldwin clearly draws inspiration from. Baldwin grew up with many religious teachings, as his adoptive father, David Baldwin, was a preacher. Though the relationship between father and son was not enviable, Baldwin still grew up active in his religion (James Baldwin Biography). Baldwin, despite growing up in the Baptist church with a preacher for a father began to convert to Pentecostalism began in his early teenage years when he accompanied friends to a Pentecostal church, where, at the age of fourteen, he became street preacher (James Baldwin Biography). Of those years as a preacher, Baldwin recalled, Those three years in the pulpit I didn t realize it then that is what turned me into a writer, really, dealing with all that anguish and that despair and that beauty. Many of his works prominently feature religion, and mimic the bible in language and tone (James Baldwin About the Author). In Sonny s Blues, and many other of Baldwin s writings, the figure of the musician represents a move towards an anti institutional spirituality and suggests the ways in which Baldwin was becoming, not less secular, but move aware of the need to distinguish between the structured religion of the church and the authenticity of a self spirituality, a ... Execution Poem Analysis In this poem Execution written by Edward Hirsch tells a philosophical reflection expressed with sadness about a sicken high school football coach who is extremely passionate. The overview of this poem is centered around his favorite word execution. Execution is expressed in multiple ways in this poem. Life was about football for the coach, he would pour in his blood sweat and tears to the game. There was no that he received every inch of effort from his player. Countless hours of preparation, practice, and energy was devoted. You would think working this hard would bring upon serious exhaustion, but the coach was like an energizer bunny, he would keep going. Unfortunately this lifestyle caught up with him, the speaker says he developed cancer. I believe that he spent too much time on the game of football. Ultimately this is what lead to his illness, the neglection of his self for the game that he loved. Details from the poem will be used to argue my claim. These details are relevant to how the coach acted and his philosophies. The significance that we get out of my claim is thought provoking. The type of execution he was preaching to the team went into full effect in the form of cancer towards him. Let me start off by saying that the coach had great intentions for the way he coached. Hardnosed, no nonsense guy, who taught discipline. Learning the art of discipline helps you on the field, but the results are even more notable off the field in everyday life. You cannot go wrong with being a disciplined individual. Real big on fundamentals, a perfectionist at teaching them. The speaker states, And had perfect unquestioning faith in the fundamentals of blocking and talking, the idea of warfare without suffering or death, the concept of teammates moving in harmony like planets. An architect at work piecing together a formula to prepare his team the best way he can. Losing was not an option, the speaker says that the coach despised losing. I personally hate losing myself so I can relate. Losing to me is like getting stabbed in the back. It hurts tremendously to not come out victorious. A study conducted of one hundred and ninety six individuals living in Madrid at the time of the terrorist attack demonstrated that age differences affects the accuracy of eye witness testimonies (Vallet, Manzanero, Arótegui, Garcia, 2017). Adolescents and children are both influenced differently by emotions and the quality of their memory. With that being said, adults performed better on recalling much accurate details such as sound, odor, central information, visuals, and feelings (Vallet, et al., 2017). The younger group of individuals, children, had doubts on recalling their memories of the event. This is due to the fact that depending on the age and level of development that an individual is in, the strength in their memory can be easily influenced (Vallet, et al., 2017). We now can assume that the swan is larger than normal for it to have such extreme power to induce a great deal of force onto an unexpecting woman. In line 4, He (Yeats 4) is written for the first time so readers now know that the swan is of male nature; this explains the large size and strength of the swan. This article states that missing Latina s are not getting the news coverage they deserve. It also talks about how white women are innocent victims in disappearance scenarios, whereas black women and Latina s are involved in activities that in some form lead to their kidnapping and death. This article explains how more news coverage on missing women of color could make a difference in whether they are found alive or dead. This is something that is true because the more the public is informed on missing people the more they will be able to help out with these cases. The quote by Lincoln though, is perhaps the most straightforward, compelling explanation ensuring that even the laymen understand the fundamentals of the term. The subject matter that is required in this essay is to determine differences in the quality of democracy. This is regarded as the dependant variable, which is the outcome that needs explanation. This can be explained using the independent variables, the economic factors and cultural factors which will be used to explain the phenomena of the dependant variable. 3 countries will be looked at in this essay to explain the given theories. The countries are Tunisia, Algeria and Libya. All 3 countries have been picked having many similarities but when it comes to the quality of democracy, they vary. All 3 countries are vastly Muslim, they border each other and they are all situated in the north Africa. However the Polity score of each country differs with Tunisia Algeria and Libya scoring 7, 2 and 0 respectively. Libya s polity score was taken that of 2014. • 36. Aristotle And Plato s Philosophy ) Professor Armstrong CC 5 October 2015 Aristotle and Plato are famous for their many works in the philosophical field. Specifically, the Republic by Plato and Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle seem to be their most popular works. In these works they discuss things that are needed to achieve the good life both on an individual level and on a societal level. There is some variance between what the two philosophers think can create the good life. They explore the concepts of eudaimonia, virtue, and soul with the same end result of happiness for all. Through analysis of each philosophers work, we can see that both Plato s definition of the good life and his method to achieve it is far superior to Aristotle s. Furthermore, this concept of the good life is best supported through democratic form of government. Eudaimonia is a Greek word commonly translated as happiness. It consists of the words eu (good) and daimon (spirit). It is a central concept of both Aristotle s and Plato s works. In their works eudaimonia was a term that referred to the highest moral good. Therefore, eudaimonia is the central focus of practical philosophy. Both Aristotle and Plato explore the concept of eudaimonia by theorizing what it really is and how it can be achieved on an individual level and on a larger, societal scale. In the 18th century, a happy marriage reflected well to society, however, behind closed doors the union represented restrictive commitment. In the past, women viewed marriage as confinement; they had no options to escape, and husbands controlled every aspect of their wives live. Women were unable to express themselves socially, mentally, emotionally, and physically, although some found relief to express their feeling through writing journals and writing to female friends. Two women that utilize writing to enlighten society and women were Kate Chopin and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Kate Chopin and Charlotte Perkins Gilman s vision inspired women to reveal their independence and opinions through the use of symbolism, setting, and theme in their short stories, The Story of an Hour and The Yellow Wallpaper. Through these both stories the authors demonstrates how both of the main characters work to identify their freedom, to describe this they use symbolism to represent this emotion. Kate Chopin, the writer of the short story, The Story of an Hour, utilizes symbolist phrases to express Mrs. Mallard s feelings towards finding her freedom and escape from her controlling husband. Task irrelevant stimuli would be unattended in high load conditions since information processing is at its full capacity, preventing further processing, whereas in low load conditions, spare capacity spills over to process the irrelevant distractors (Lavie Cox, 1997). The invasion allowed for the Allies to open up a second front in the west against the Nazi s to relieve pressure off the Russians in the east. The Russians at the time had long been engaging the Nazis in the east fighting roughly 75% of the German army and after years of brutal combat were making a true counter offensive and making extreme headway and pushing the Nazis back across Russia and back into to Germany. The results of D day and the Normandy landings were successful to say the least, ever so costly the operation known as Operation Overlord resulted of the Allied landing over 100,000 troops. Much of the success at Normandy can be attributed to several different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First and foremost, the invasions as a whole, was almost scrapped due to the inclement weather. The invasion was scheduled to be carried out on June 5th instead of June 6th due to high winds, rough surf and extreme cloud coverage as well as rain. This would have prevented the Allies from having any sort of air support which inevitably allowed for so much success. Additionally, the tides and surf would have made Allied landings significantly more dangerous than they already were considering the impact of direct and indirect fire as well as small arms and machine gun fire, the troops have had to battle the sea as well. Luckily for the Allied side the weather cleared up just in time for the invasion. Also, many of the minefields and other landing obstacles that were supposed to be destroyed by bombers were left untouched, as low visibility caused for many of the bomb to be dropped inaccurately further inland. To continue, many of the Allied supplies and vehicles were unable to make it further inland to fuel a quick inland advance. Lastly, the Allies also suffered from poor intelligence, which proved to cost significant losses an Allied lifes on objectives that were no longer the same as they had been ... The current controversy is that protest at NFL games is not only disrespectful to the country, but is also a disrespect to our armed forces who fought for our constitutional rights, this paper is simply an observation piece that will discuss the various arguments surrounding the NFL protest and will explore people s current feelings toward the silent protest. Many members of the U.S military have come to Collin Kaepernick s defense in the aftermath of the protest. Kellie Johnson a former military personal talk about how the protests are simply representations of their freedom of expression and that people should stop focusing on the anthem and start focusing on the reasons for the protest. She even speculates that majority of people who complain about kneeling are the same ones in the stands of sporting events looking at their phones, which is a form of disrespect to the flag. So, you can start to see that the same people who worship the flag commit actions that devalues its worth in America as well. The factiousness symbolized in the American flag distorts people s perspective of how equality and justice should be upheld in this country. • 51. Symbolism Of The Apple In Jeanne Duprau s The Giver Symbol In The Giver, the apple symbolizes difference. The symbol of the apple occurs in the story when Jonas and Asher are playing catch when ...suddenly Jonas had noticed ... the apple had changed (30). By looking at this quotation, we see that Jonas is an imperfection in the genetic engineering because he can see color. Somehow the committee notices this and makes Jonas a receiver and hides him away with the Giver in the annex room. This is important because in this community everything is perfect. Perfect in The Giver is no choice because without choice there is no war, fighting, or even small arguments, but also no emotion. Going back to the symbolism of the apple, it represents how Jonas is different from the rest of the community in how he can see beyond. The community may look utopian from the outside but from the inside it really is dystopian because there is no choice, they kill babies and the elderly, and you aren t even allowed to choose who you marry and how many kids you have. Imagery In The City of Ember the future is very bleak and lackluster. Blackouts and the depletion of necessary items such as light bulbs puts a really dark and broken down image in one s head. The author, Jeanne DuPrau describes the city as falling apart and in need of repair: They must not leave the city for at least 200 years (1). By looking at this quotation, we can see that the people of Ember needed to leave around more than half a century ago because 200 years was the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
