Public Humiliation In The Scarlet Letter
Justin Weronick
Ms. Owen
American Literature
2 December 2016
The Negative Side of Public Humiliation In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester
Prynne s punishment for adultery is to stand on a scaffold in the middle of town for three hours, and to
wear a scarlet letter on her garment for the rest of her life. Today judges sometimes use public
humiliation instead of traditional punishments, like jail time or community service, to punish
criminals. In today s society public humiliation should not continue be used to punish criminals in
today s society. The use of public humiliation as an alternative for traditional punishments is an abuse
of government power. The eighth amendment of the United States Constitution bans the use of ...

punishments, and does not fit in with modern society. Abandoning public humiliation will allow the

Sex Law And Consent Analysis
In Sex, Law, and Consent , West argues that consensual and non consensual sex are different,
consensual sex can result in harm and radical feminists and queer theorists have failed to acknowledge
the harms of unwelcome consensual sex. Firstly, West argues that consensual, and non consensual sex
are not the same because there is a difference in the qualitative experience. (p.8) In the non consensual
sex, the body feels like an inanimate object, whereas, in consensual sex, the person does not feel (s)he
is being used by another. Secondly, West argues that there are harms associated with consensual sex
such as, unwanted pregnancy. Lastly, he argues that the radical feminists approach that harmful sex is
a result of inequality and coercive measures

Enterobacter Cloacae Lab Report
Enterobacter cloacae is a common Gram negative bacterium. It belongs to the family
Enterobacteriaceae. Enterobacter cloacae is an opportunistic bacteria and has emerged as a nosocomial
pathogen within the last decade.1 E. cloacae is more prominant within intensive care units, especially
those patients who are on mechanical ventilation.1 Antibiotic resistance is one of the well known
features of this microorganism.1 A trail was conducted to determine how exactly Enterobacter cloacae
works in regards to its pathogenicity, but unfortunately only a few mechanisms are understood. The
few processes that are known include its ability to produce biofilms as well as secrete numerous
cytotoxins.1
According to a trial trying to determine bacterial resistance within the Enterobacteriaceae family E.
cloacae has been proven resistance to ampicillin, amoxicillin clavulanic acid, first generation
cephalosporins, cephalothin, cefoxitin, broad spectrum cephalosporins, as well as third generation
cephalosporins. 1 The trial also stated that this vast resistance is due to the bacteria s ... Show more

A Report On The Subway Closed At 11
No one spoke English in the bookstore. But there was still an English section populated by cheap
copies of public domain classics like The Odyssey or Jane Eyre. Beyond it, the sprawling window
revealed a neon glitzed row of karaoke bars.
Excuse me, a voice said.
It was an American girl about 20 years old. Boston accent.
Do you know what time the subway closes?
The subway in Beijing closes at 11 PM. I learned this firsthand, when a thunderstorm stranded me in
the Zhonglouwan Hutong. I plodded back to my hotel as water flooded the cobblestone streets. My
shoes practically melted off my feet.
She was a nice girl. After a while, I invited her to grab a drink with me at a cafe down the road. She
was down. After all, the subway closed at 11 and it was only 9:30.
It was late summer, 2015. I was 24 years old. I had been living alone in Beijing for the past month.
The American Film Institute sent me to China through a partnership with IDG Media. I had spent the
past year battling through AFI s rigorous and rewarding first year. Frankly, I could use some time
alone.
Be careful what you wish for.
A teacher once told me, I ve been alone in my life and I ve been lonely. They re totally different
things.
In Beijing I was mostly alone.
Then I got lonely.
We left the bookstore and went to an erudite cafe called the Bookworm. We ordered drinks. The girl
was a journalism major, also living in Beijing on a scholarship.
I mentioned I was a screenwriter. She

Gary Soto Like Mexicans Analysis
I don t believe that there is one person who is just like another. As people, we have distinct
characteristics, we all come from different places, have a unique past and have a different outlook on
life, but that doesn t mean we aren t similar. At the end of the day we are all people and what makes us
different also makes us similar. To start with in the essay Like Mexicans by Gary Soto he tells us his
story about how he fell in love with a woman who was different from him. Soto s mother and
grandmother always gave him the same advice marry a Mexican girl (Soto). Soto soon realized what
his mother and grandmother meant by their advice, But then one afternoon while I was hitchhiking

She has a crush on the minister s son and she is embarrassed about her family s culture. My favorite
quote from Fish Cheeks is what would Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christman (Tan)? What
would he think of our noise Chinese relatives who lack proper American manners (Tan)? What terrible
disappointment would he feel upon seeing not a roasted turkey and sweet potatoes but Chinese food
(Tan)? These are all of the concerns running through Tan s mind the minute she found out about the
holiday dinner her family was hosting. Personally, I feel this is a story that many of us can relate to.
Growing up I think a lot of people feel unsure or have insecurities when they feel different from other
people. However, I think theses insecurities only make us grow as people. At the end of the essay Tan
states, For Christmas Eve that year, she had chosen all my favorite foods (Tan). Her mother knew she
was nervous about this dinner so in result she cooked all her favorite foods to make her feel more
comfortable. Even if the context is different we have all been in situations where we have felt
embarrassed about something. Whether it has to do with a crush, school, family, work etc. We have all
had anxiety about what people may think of us no matter how old you are or what stage you re going
through in life right now we have all been there

Overstock s 2008 Financial Audit
Overstock is currently audited by the CPA Firm KPMG LLP and has been since 2009. According to
the proxy statement pursuant to schedule 14A KPMG s aggregate audit fees for 2012 and 2011 were
$1,037,000 and $1,092,000 respectively; all of which were approved by the audit committee. The
amounts of $40,000 in 2012 and 21,000 is 2011 were related to the audits for Overstocks 401k benefit
plan. Additionally, $88,000 in 2012 and $96,000 in 2011 were related to tax services, and 221,000 in
2012 were related to a cloud based consulting project.
Previous to KPMG, Grant Thornton was Overstock s auditor for an Interim period from March 2009
to November 2009. Based on the information published in the 8K, Overstock dismissed Grant
Thornton due to a revision of a $785,000 asset that Grant Thornton wanted to amend in the company s
pervious 2009 quarterly filling and 2008 financial results. Overstock disagreed with Grant Thornton s
position, and unfortunately the timing of the situation could not have been worst considering the SEC
filing deadline were approaching. Surprisingly, Grant Thornton retaliated Overstock s comments
affirming that they never took position as to whether Overstocks 2008 financial statements should be
reinstated, since they did not issue an audit opinion for the 2008 financial. Furthermore, Grant
Thornton clarified that they were engaged to review, not to audit, the company s interim financial

The World Of Puerto Rico Essay
Boriqua! is a commonly used term among the people of Puerto Rico when referring to themselves or
their country. Puerto Rico, formerly known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is a U.S. Territory.
It is a small island, only 100 miles long and 35 miles wide, located in the Caribbean Ocean. It is about
1,000 miles off the tip of Florida in between the Dominican Republic and the Virgin Islands. The
climate is tropical and mild with little variation in the seasonal temperature. The country is composed
of one large island and many smaller islands. Puerto Rico is home to 3.6 million people, and its capital
city San Juan is home to almost 400,000 people. Spanish and English are the two main languages
spoken. The country is one of few in the world that is officially bilingual (NationFacts). The term
boricua is linked with Puerto Rico s native heritage. The word comes from Boriken, the TaĂno word
for the island (NationFacts), the Great Land of the Valiente and Noble Lord (prfdance.org).
The population of Puerto Rico is a mix of culture and ethnicities, whose origins can be traced back to
native Taino, Spanish and West African roots. On Columbus second voyage to the New World in 1493,
the Spaniards came across the island of Puerto Rico. At that time the island was populated by peaceful
indigenous people called the Taino indians (prfdance.org). The Taino welcomed the Spaniards, but the
Spaniards treated them severely. Due to the slave labor conditions and new European diseases

The Role Of Power For Private Gain As Defined By The...
Background: Corruption is the use of entrusted power for private gain as defined by the United
Nations Development Programme (UNDP 2008). This research studies the effects and consequences
of corruption in the Nigeria health care system. Like other sectors in Nigeria, the health sector is not
immune from corruption and this is because of the high demand for health care services which has
enormously created opportunity for individuals in health care delivery to manipulate the system to
their own advantages at the expense of the general public or consumers. The gap that this has created
has made it difficult for targets and health care priorities to be met due to the administrative distance

Health care delivery corruption in Nigeria prevails because there is no compliance to the rule of law,
the administrative system in Nigeria lacks transparency and trust, also the public sector which could
have acted as a check and balance is ruled by ineffective civil service codes and weak accountability
methods (Husmann, K. 2011).
Causes/Manifestations: Nigeria health system information is asymmetrical in nature and is susceptible
to corruption because large numbers of care givers see this as an opportunity to create systemic
hindrances and therefore discourage transparency and accountability. It was even argued that
consumers not only suffer the consequences of the infected system but also help to encourage the
corrupt system, it was reported that some patients believed that one cannot obtain high quality health
care unless one is socially or relatively connected to a health care worker, if not, one has to pay a bribe
as an incentive to receive health care from caregivers that are trained and paid for the job. This has
created a social norm in which bribing is deemed to be legitimate (Adegboyega et al 2012).
Another cause of this social norm is uncertainty regarding real projection of who will fall ill and to
allocate geographically types of illness associated to a region. This makes it difficult to allocate
resources adequately to

Rightly Detected Truths In Sherwood Anderson s Hands
While investigating one of the largest mysteries known to human civilization, atomic structure, British
chemist John Dalton wrote, It s the right idea, but not the right time (online). Although Dalton was
profoundly incorrect in his analysis of the atom and its structure, his written words regarding the
importance of rightly ordered truths could not be of greater importance for making and sustaining
human connections throughout time. For the duration of human existence, romantic love and dating
has always remained one of the largest hurdles an individual must face in his or her lifetime. Often
considered a pivotal ingredient in any robust affinity between two parties, every relationship must be
rightly ordered; that is to say, the relationship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An incredibly crucial component of modern love remains having relationships that are rightly ordered
. Unfortunately for Wing Bittlebaum, most of his obsessions were incorrectly ordered. Although
sexual relationships between adults and children are obviously inappropriate for any time period or
location, Bittlebaum s relationship with Willard was incorrectly timed by approximately sixty years.
Despite not necessarily being an allegory for any modern problem in particular, Sherwood Anderson s
Hands provides incredible insight into human need and want, and the drive to fulfill one s desires
while ignoring a rightly ordered life in favor of an incorrect balance. Although many relationships can
flourish without necessarily being ordered perfectly, Wing Bittlebaum s many illegal and unwanted
relationships could never have succeeded due to his lack of understanding and empathy. Although not
considered to be the pinnacle of knowledge regarding poetry, John Dalton s famous expression, It s
the right idea; but not the right time (online) rings true in Sherwood Anderson s short story

What Is The Supreme Court Case Of Loving V. Virginia
Loving v. Virginia
Loving versus Virginia is cased based on racial discrimination. A case is set in the 1950s where
interracial marriages was still taboo. The state of Virginia had a law in place that made interracial
marriages a felony. Which in turn Loving and his wife took their case to Supreme Court to seek justice
for themselves and others, and their state s law called into question. This case the Fourteenth
Amendment was brought into play and the right to Equal Protection and Due Process clauses.
The basis of this case coming to the Supreme Court attention was because a white 23 year old male
Richard Loving married a Negro 17 year old woman Mildred Jeter, who were both from Virginia,

Totalitarianism In Harrison Bergeron
Kurt Vonnegut s Harrison Bergeron , is a short story that explores the ideas of humanity in the future.
This author is blatantly proving how the saying everyone is equal is not entirely true. In this story, the
government that imposes totalitarianism has went through the actions of processing equality to the
citizens of the United States and through the agents involved with the United States Handicapper
General. This showed how this government was able to take the idea of equality and end up stripping
the citizens of processing individual thoughts, their creativity and intellect, and basically brainwashed
society to believe nothing happening should be considered incorrect behavior Incidentally, Harrison
Bergeron is not simply an interesting short story, but was intended for historical satire purposes.
Harrison Bergeron was written and published by Vonnegut in 1961. Throughout the years, many
different variations have been attempted by other authors. Vonnegut was an author who was an
American and was viewed as having a very respectable reputation as a writer during his time. This
idea of Harrison Bergeron represents the views acquiring from both the social criticisms and also the
political view from America. The way that the author, Kurt Vonnegut portrays the political system is
founded upon different principles around the ideas of egalitarianism, which basically means that
people are meant to view each other as equals to each other. Established in what is known as The

inconsistent the robot triggers new planning. Otherwise robots remain idle. The evaluation of the
proposed ADPP algorithm with comparison with previous approaches Centralized prioritized planning

time, communication complexity (the number of broadcasted messages) and solution quality. In the

Animal Intelligence Essay
Animal Intelligence
Intelligence is defined as the ability to acquire and apply knowledge. Psychologists have exploited this
concept in many ways to try and determine whether non human animals are capable of intelligence.
From social learning it is logical to assume that, since non human animals are able to both acquire and
use new behaviours, they must be intelligent in some way. Heyes stated that there are 6 types of
behaviour which suggest intelligence. These are imitation, self recognition, social relationship
formation, role taking, deception and perspective taking. These 6 behaviours are referred to as the
theory of mind (ToM).
Imitation is the ability to copy another s behaviour, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This gives a good basis to ToM as intelligence is required to recognise that the mirror image is not
another individual. This behaviour has been reported in the higher primates.
Gallup s study required chimpanzees to be placed in a cage with a mirror. At first they reacted like the
image was another chimp, but later realised that it was actually themselves. Gallup anaesthetised the
chimpanzees then placed a red mark on one eyebrow and ear. After recovering, the chimpanzees
would often touch the red mark, when they looked in the mirror. This supports the idea that higher
primates are capable of self recognition. This experiment was tried out on other animals e.g. cats,
dogs, and elephants with unsuccessful results.
The fact that no other animals responded to this experiment means that it cannot be said for sure that
all non human animals are capable of self recognition. Therefore some non human animals do not
show signs of ToM. Evolutionary science suggests that the higher primates are distant relatives of
human beings, having similar physiology may mean that higher primates are more capable of
intelligence.
Social relationships refer to an animal s ability to form bonds with others of its species. This
relationship formation may be affected by the animal s status or role in the community. In

Texting While Driving And Driving
No matter how much effort state governments try to make to avoid people texting while driving, only
so much can be done on the government s and law enforcement s side of the matter. Different states
have different rules. Some outlaw texting while driving when under the age of 21 or 18. Other states
have hand held bans on cell phones while some states have an all phone ban. Law enforcement
officers who regulate and enforce traffic matters have to catch the person in the act of texting while
driving. Catching a person in the act is not an easy task to accomplish as an officer of the law. Even a
consistent and national law against texting while driving would plausibly not solve the calamities. I
think the true issue of driving and texting is contingent with the drivers. Drivers should take heed to
statistics, priorities, and lives involved regarding the issue of texting and driving. Many statistics can
prove how texting while driving is a serious problem, and a majority of the drivers do not realize the
risks. Other drivers know the dangers and risks of texting while driving, but do not have the
appearance of caring. Although the amount of casualties resulting from texting while driving has
decreased considerably, there is still a shocking number of deaths and casualties from this issue. The
number of casualties and deaths from texting while driving have surpassed the number of drunk
driving incidents. Drunk driving deaths a year amount to about 2,700 lives while driving and

The Tax Laws And The United States Constitution
Ever since the ratification of the 16th amendment to the United States Constitution, Americans have
faced the burden of federal income taxes. Income taxes were first proposed as a better way of
gathering revenue, as well as an effective measure to manipulate economic spending. However, the
current tax code bears very little resemblance to the relatively simple codes that were originally
written into law. Today s tax laws have grown astonishingly complex and unequally distributes the
burden of tax liabilities. Our country should confront the issues derived from the increasing
complexity of the tax laws and equally distribute the obligations to each taxpayer.
Virtually all citizens and politicians alike, agree that the current tax code is entirely too complex, yet
nearly every year the system gets more complicated, not less. The reason is that simplicity almost
always clashes with the other goals within the tax policy. Most people believe income taxes should be
enforceable, fair, and beneficial to economic wealth, all while maintaining simplicity. But even those
who agree on the necessity of these goals often disagree about the hierarchical importance of each. As
a result, the tax policies usually represent a portion of each competing goal, leaving no room for
simplicity. For example, most countries tailor tax liabilities to the characteristics of the individual
taxpayer. That can make taxes more fair, but also more complex. Income must first be traced from a
business to the

What Temporal Analysis of Contribution Pattern says about...
In this section, we state and justify the choices we made in the study, its influence and also discuss the
future scope of this work. In this paper, we present a case study on one real world, large, popular and
open source project namely Google Chromium Project. Google Chromium has reportedly observed an
increase in popularityfootnote{http://statcounter.com} (with respect to other similar projects) from
2009 to 2012 that is the duration of the study. This increase in popularity is also evident from the
increase in issue count reported for the project. The insights present in the study brings out the trends
in popular project, however due to limited space availability we do not bring out the contrast by
comparison with projects that heads ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus one may argue that it is the contribution pattern of core participants and not all contributors that
matters for the project. However, success of FLOSS projects is driven by masses and not individuals
where each contributor has a unique role to serve. For instance, approximately 70% of contributors in
FLOSS projects are one time contributors. However, their presence ensures popularity and interest in
project, and is appreciated. So if contributors cease to file issues it is an indicator of decreasing
popularity and influences the age of project. With decreasing contribution the project diminishes and
slowly dies out.
In this study we assume absence of activities in three months as an indicator of contributors leaving
the project. This assumption is localized. For instance, an owner who stop participating for three
months indicates that the contributor has left the project while a reporter may continue participation
even after a year. However, for planning this assumption holds as it indicates the trend of
participation. Also the data available in ITS may not answer all RQs that are of relevance to decision
makers. However, it gives justifiable understanding of stability of the project in a data driven and
objective manner.
Another extension of this work will be to study environmental factors that influences stability of
project by examining contributor participation patterns. We present study on trends of participation,
however inclusion of factors

that becoming an architect is just an effortless work, until I searched the experiences of a real
architect. There was one architect who elucidated that it would be a lengthy and tedious with all the
studying that I would have to do. First, there are four years of undergraduate architecture program,
then I have to gain one year of working experience. After one year of working, I have to get back to
studying master degree of architecture for two years, after that, I will have to work and take exams to
become a registered architect. After seeing the immense workload to become an architect, I feared that
I cannot make it through all the studying, exams and most of all, high standards of work. The path
towards my ambition of becoming an architect faded from my mind, and I had no idea how to renew
my vision. I dreaded about this, and then I decided to talk with my parents. They have said that I
should challenge myself with a tough task, then I would know what I am capable of. In The

Rhetorical Devices Used In Bruce Cockburn s Hoop Dancer
In Bruce Cockburn s Hoop Dancer, a song written in 1979 from the album The Trouble with Normal,
he he made the case that today s society does not have a center, like Indians once did, and it is too late
to fix it. Bruce Cockburn used vivid rhetorical devices: chiasmus, antithesis, bookends, and allusion to
express the theme. One of the rhetorical device used was chiasmus. Bruce incorporates chiasmus by
saying 1st man last man dancing man man dancing. As the Indian is dancing, other Indians could
understand the scene, however the 20th century people watching do not have the ability to understand
because people in the 20th century do not have a center like the old Indians did. Bruce also used

During the pre Gilead period society was free and was able to do as they pleased. However, the
extremist views of religion changed the life of Gilead. Society is forced to believe that the Republic of
Gilead is much better than the pre Gilead period, and that they are the supreme power of the world.
The creators of the totalitarian regime believe that society can forget about the past. They also use
brainwashing and desensitizes society from the amount of violence, executions, discrimination, and
horrible treatment towards women and those with different religions. Women in Gilead are just seen as
reproductive machines, like as they were commonly used in the Bible. Aunt Lydia brainwashes the
handmaid s by stating: This may not seem ordinary to you now, but after a time it will. It will become
ordinary (31). However, Offred knows that her life will never be ordinary. She admits to the reader
that her once free life is lost. She walks by Harvard University everyday; what once was a symbol of
knowledge and innovation, is now seen as a place where executed bodies hang as a fear tactic for
those who do not believe in Gilead. While others have become desensitized to the amount of
executions and harsh violence in Gilead, Offred never does. Society was forced to forget their past,
however, Offred never does. Offred cannot simply accept a society that took everything that she once

An Analysis Of The Destructors By T.
In The Destructors , T. keeps assuring that the reason they tore the house down wasn t personal, but he
clearly had motivation to tear it down. The motivation to tear the house down comes mainly from T.,
not the whole gang. T. wants to tear down the house because there was a bombing years ago, and
every house crumbled into dust, including T. s, but this was the only house that was left standing. The

What Is The Social Implications Of The Plague
In fall of the year 1347 a fleet of Genoese trading ships docked at Sicilian port in Italy. The crowds
gathered in eager expectation at meeting the newcomers and seeing what goods they were carrying.
They were utterly horrified at what they discovered. Most of the ship s crew were dead, the rest
mostly dying. In terror, the Sicilian authorities ordered the fleet out of its harbor in hopes of sparing
themselves from the same fate. It was a false hope. The Plague spread with a horrifying rapidity. It
raged across the European continent killing unprecedented numbers. In fact, it is generally agreed that
thirty to sixty percent of Europe s population died as a result or a staggering twenty to twenty five

Should Contact Sports Be Banned Essay
Jenna Gregory Mrs. King ELA 6th Hour 07 April 2017 Contact Sports Contact sports are very healthy
for the human body, this is because of all the physical activity that is taking place. Not only are contact
sports healthy physically but they are also healthy mentally. Contact sports should not be banned from
schools because they relieve stress and anger. My first reason that contact sports should not be banned
is because a lot of people love playing and being a part of this sort of activity. Other reasons are that
they want to be active and healthy. According to Brian Cammarota, a physical therapist at Penn

Using A Tool Of Stem Innovation
While working outside with my father building a tuff shed in the backyard, we needed to use a tool of
STEM innovation. Can you guess what that innovation could be? It was the wheel barrow, now I
know what you are saying, The wheelbarrow isn t a lever! Actually the wheel barrow is an innovation
of the lever because it has the components of a fulcrum, load, and effort force which is exerted. The
wheelbarrow falls under first class lever because the fulcrum placed between the load and effort to
give it equal balance according www.ohio.edu. The lever is one of the simplest mechanical devices

Context of the innovation
Yet, though Ancient Egypt has many wonders to offer, let s decide to focus the journey on tools that

were provided have been the custom way of life during before Christ and last for thousands of years.
Yet, today in our society we still use what the Egyptians invented, but we have used their inventions as
a foundation for advancement in tools. The Egyptians used their tools to make life easier, especially in
construction, such as building the pyramids, temples, limestone homes, and other building constructed
with the ramps and levers. The innovation of tools represents STEM because these tools is considered

Role Of Chivalry In Beowulf
The role of chivalry is a complicated concept for solitary heroes within Beowulf and Albrecht DĂźrer s
Knight, Death, and the Devil. In Beowulf, the concept of chivalry is explained through the eyes of the
hero, Beowulf, which is the idea of performing chivalrous actions in the face of death for glory;
however, Beowulf does not realize that his actions will not keep his people safe in the end. In Knight,
Death and the Devil, the idea of chivalry is the motivation of the knight on religious grounds to be
chivalrous in the face of death. The Knight gives the impression that he understood that his actions
would ultimately be meaningless, and he appears resigned to the idea. The argument can be made that
chivalry is unsustainable in both texts, given that while it inspires these heroes to pursue these tasks,
the result is that they believe that mild sacrifices, such as their own life, must be made to ensure
victory; however, these two texts differ with their heroes anticipated outcomes of their sacrifices,
which turns out to be for nothing. Despite having different outcomes of operating within a system of
chivalry, these two texts similarly critique the outcomes of chivalry as being unsustainable based on
the demands it places on heroes to sacrifice themselves. To defend this claim, I will begin by similarly
critiquing how chivalry is unsustainable within both texts. I will then express how both texts show the
unsustainability results from the demands of sacrifice. I will then

Rhythm And Meter Of Music Chapter 2 Summary
Chapter two of the text focuses in on the rhythm and meter of music, or musical time. Rhythm can be
defined as the movement of music, where meter organizes beat in music. Throughout the years
composers have created rhythmic complexities to engage the listener with a different sensation when
enjoying music by straying away from a monotone rhythm. Syncopation is the most common way
composers achieve this goal. Syncopation is defined as the deliberate upsetting of the normal pattern
of accents (Rhythm Meter). In other words, the accent is displaced from the strong beat in a measure
to the offbeat, which falls in between stronger beats. In addition to syncopation, polyrhythm can
produce a similar effect in throwing off regular accent patterns.

What Happens When Eating Gluten-Free
I used to eat out often with my wife before I discovered I had Celiac Disease. That all changed when I
had to start eating gluten free. You see, a few years ago the words gluten free and Celiac Disease were
almost non existent. I didn t know until years later how to find out which restaurants I could eat gluten
free food at.
Really, no matter what state you live in or even if there are not many advertised gluten free restaurants
near you, you can find places to eat out. Here s what you do. First, simply think of a restaurant you
would like to eat at. Second, go on their website to read up on their menu. More and more restaurants
are providing information on their websites about how they prepare their food and which items are
gluten free. As you re looking at your favorite restaurant s website, if you don t see any info about
gluten free items, chances are good that they don t have anything gluten free. Here s the thing, though,
give them a call and ask them about how they prepare their food. If you notice a menu item that doesn
t have gluten ingredients you can ask them how they prepare it. This way you can find out if it comes
in contact with gluten. I ve done this and have had great results. ... Show more content on

The Movie Invictus
Invictus: Is it Hollywood or is it History? No one is born hating another person because of the color of
his skin, or his background or his religion. People learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can
be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite. I have viewed
the Invictus film and thoroughly researched Nelson Mandela and the people he encountered during his
term in office and even during his prison time. Mandela has been one of the greatest inspirations in
this world, he has shown people that even if you start life bad, there are always things you can mend
back together. Mandela is definitely one of the most dedicated, encouraging people I have ever
researched about. In this paper I will prove that the film, Invictus, was historically accurate by
discussing the true historical people and events, summarizing the movie, and comparing and
contrasting how the movie portrayed the true people and events. Nelson was such an inspiration and
he influenced so many people in his lifetime, he was truly such a strong and straight forward person.
Nelson Mandela was from a village of Mvezo, Transkei. He was born July 18, 1918 and he was raised
in the small village. (history.com) While he was a child, they lost everything just because his father

The Pros And Cons Of The Death Penalty
Is the death penalty really the answer? Even though the criminal deserves the punishment of death, it
is not always what a person deserves because death is the easy way out of the crime and the methods
of killing are cruel. Some people feel that the Death Penalty should be broadened to cases such as
rape, child molesters, etc.
Execution Problems First off, some states just put people on death row and leave them there for a very,
very long amount of time. Furthermore, only 1,110 people have been executed on death row since
1973 and 4.1% of those people were innocent (Ballaro Cushman, 2016). In a state there was execution
that looked like torture because they sat there and watched the man die for 40 minutes with the lethal
injection that they had used to kill him (Newsweek Global, 2014). After another execution, they took
45 minutes to find a suitable vein on a man by just probing his arms and a leg because of his past drug
abuse. The FBI s evidence shows that the death penalty takes up large amounts of money but still does
not deter criminals(Ballaro, Cushman, 2016). In the recent past, some people in the Supreme Court
believed that the death penalty has been used in a racist manner, and could have resulted in innocent
lives being taken for things they did not do. In Arkansas, the Governor wasn t doing a very good job
setting dates for execution, so that the family and friends of the person or the person they committed
the crime against could have peace of mind either

Today judges sometimes use public humiliation instead of traditional punishments, like jail time or community service, to punish criminals. Sex Law And Consent Analysis In Sex, Law, and Consent , West argues that consensual and non consensual sex are different, consensual sex can result in harm and radical feminists and queer theorists have failed to acknowledge the harms of unwelcome consensual sex. Firstly, West argues that consensual, and non consensual sex are not the same because there is a difference in the qualitative experience. (p.8) In the non consensual sex, the body feels like an inanimate object, whereas, in consensual sex, the person does not feel (s)he is being used by another. Secondly, West argues that there are harms associated with consensual sex such as, unwanted pregnancy. Enterobacter cloacae is an opportunistic bacteria and has emerged as a nosocomial pathogen within the last decade.1 E. cloacae is more prominant within intensive care units, especially those patients who are on mechanical ventilation.1 Antibiotic resistance is one of the well known features of this microorganism.1 A trail was conducted to determine how exactly Enterobacter cloacae works in regards to its pathogenicity, but unfortunately only a few mechanisms are understood. The few processes that are known include its ability to produce biofilms as well as secrete numerous cytotoxins.1 According to a trial trying to determine bacterial resistance within the Enterobacteriaceae family E. cloacae has been proven resistance to ampicillin, amoxicillin clavulanic acid, first generation cephalosporins, cephalothin, cefoxitin, broad spectrum cephalosporins, as well as third generation cephalosporins. 1 The trial also stated that this vast resistance is due to the bacteria s ... But there was still an English section populated by cheap copies of public domain classics like The Odyssey or Jane Eyre. Beyond it, the sprawling window revealed a neon glitzed row of karaoke bars. Excuse me, a voice said. It was an American girl about 20 years old. Boston accent. Do you know what time the subway closes? The subway in Beijing closes at 11 PM. I learned this firsthand, when a thunderstorm stranded me in the Zhonglouwan Hutong. I plodded back to my hotel as water flooded the cobblestone streets. My shoes practically melted off my feet. She was a nice girl. After a while, I invited her to grab a drink with me at a cafe down the road. She was down. After all, the subway closed at 11 and it was only 9:30. It was late summer, 2015. I was 24 years old. I had been living alone in Beijing for the past month. The American Film Institute sent me to China through a partnership with IDG Media. I had spent the past year battling through AFI s rigorous and rewarding first year. Frankly, I could use some time alone. Be careful what you wish for. A teacher once told me, I ve been alone in my life and I ve been lonely. They re totally different things. In Beijing I was mostly alone. Then I got lonely. We left the bookstore and went to an erudite cafe called the Bookworm. We ordered drinks. The girl was a journalism major, also living in Beijing on a scholarship. I mentioned I was a screenwriter. As people, we have distinct characteristics, we all come from different places, have a unique past and have a different outlook on life, but that doesn t mean we aren t similar. At the end of the day we are all people and what makes us different also makes us similar. To start with in the essay Like Mexicans by Gary Soto he tells us his story about how he fell in love with a woman who was different from him. Soto s mother and grandmother always gave him the same advice marry a Mexican girl (Soto). My favorite quote from Fish Cheeks is what would Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christman (Tan)? What would he think of our noise Chinese relatives who lack proper American manners (Tan)? What terrible disappointment would he feel upon seeing not a roasted turkey and sweet potatoes but Chinese food (Tan)? These are all of the concerns running through Tan s mind the minute she found out about the holiday dinner her family was hosting. Personally, I feel this is a story that many of us can relate to. Growing up I think a lot of people feel unsure or have insecurities when they feel different from other people. However, I think theses insecurities only make us grow as people. At the end of the essay Tan states, For Christmas Eve that year, she had chosen all my favorite foods (Tan). Her mother knew she was nervous about this dinner so in result she cooked all her favorite foods to make her feel more comfortable. Even if the context is different we have all been in situations where we have felt embarrassed about something. According to the proxy statement pursuant to schedule 14A KPMG s aggregate audit fees for 2012 and 2011 were $1,037,000 and $1,092,000 respectively; all of which were approved by the audit committee. The amounts of $40,000 in 2012 and 21,000 is 2011 were related to the audits for Overstocks 401k benefit plan. Additionally, $88,000 in 2012 and $96,000 in 2011 were related to tax services, and 221,000 in 2012 were related to a cloud based consulting project. Previous to KPMG, Grant Thornton was Overstock s auditor for an Interim period from March 2009 to November 2009. Based on the information published in the 8K, Overstock dismissed Grant Thornton due to a revision of a $785,000 asset that Grant Thornton wanted to amend in the company s pervious 2009 quarterly filling and 2008 financial results. Overstock disagreed with Grant Thornton s position, and unfortunately the timing of the situation could not have been worst considering the SEC filing deadline were approaching. Surprisingly, Grant Thornton retaliated Overstock s comments affirming that they never took position as to whether Overstocks 2008 financial statements should be reinstated, since they did not issue an audit opinion for the 2008 financial. • 8. The World Of Puerto Rico Essay Boriqua! is a commonly used term among the people of Puerto Rico when referring to themselves or their country. Puerto Rico, formerly known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is a U.S. Territory. It is a small island, only 100 miles long and 35 miles wide, located in the Caribbean Ocean. It is about 1,000 miles off the tip of Florida in between the Dominican Republic and the Virgin Islands. The climate is tropical and mild with little variation in the seasonal temperature. The country is composed of one large island and many smaller islands. Puerto Rico is home to 3.6 million people, and its capital city San Juan is home to almost 400,000 people. Spanish and English are the two main languages spoken. The country is one of few in the world that is officially bilingual (NationFacts). The term boricua is linked with Puerto Rico s native heritage. The word comes from Boriken, the TaĂno word for the island (NationFacts), the Great Land of the Valiente and Noble Lord (prfdance.org). The population of Puerto Rico is a mix of culture and ethnicities, whose origins can be traced back to native Taino, Spanish and West African roots. On Columbus second voyage to the New World in 1493, the Spaniards came across the island of Puerto Rico. At that time the island was populated by peaceful indigenous people called the Taino indians (prfdance.org). The Taino welcomed the Spaniards, but the Spaniards treated them severely. Background: Corruption is the use of entrusted power for private gain as defined by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP 2008). This research studies the effects and consequences of corruption in the Nigeria health care system. Like other sectors in Nigeria, the health sector is not immune from corruption and this is because of the high demand for health care services which has enormously created opportunity for individuals in health care delivery to manipulate the system to their own advantages at the expense of the general public or consumers. The gap that this has created has made it difficult for targets and health care priorities to be met due to the administrative distance between governance and social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Health care delivery corruption in Nigeria prevails because there is no compliance to the rule of law, the administrative system in Nigeria lacks transparency and trust, also the public sector which could have acted as a check and balance is ruled by ineffective civil service codes and weak accountability methods (Husmann, K. 2011). Causes/Manifestations: Nigeria health system information is asymmetrical in nature and is susceptible to corruption because large numbers of care givers see this as an opportunity to create systemic hindrances and therefore discourage transparency and accountability. It was even argued that consumers not only suffer the consequences of the infected system but also help to encourage the corrupt system, it was reported that some patients believed that one cannot obtain high quality health care unless one is socially or relatively connected to a health care worker, if not, one has to pay a bribe as an incentive to receive health care from caregivers that are trained and paid for the job. This has created a social norm in which bribing is deemed to be legitimate (Adegboyega et al 2012). Another cause of this social norm is uncertainty regarding real projection of who will fall ill and to allocate geographically types of illness associated to a region. This makes it difficult to allocate resources adequately to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rightly Detected Truths In Sherwood Anderson s Hands While investigating one of the largest mysteries known to human civilization, atomic structure, British chemist John Dalton wrote, It s the right idea, but not the right time (online). Although Dalton was profoundly incorrect in his analysis of the atom and its structure, his written words regarding the importance of rightly ordered truths could not be of greater importance for making and sustaining human connections throughout time. For the duration of human existence, romantic love and dating has always remained one of the largest hurdles an individual must face in his or her lifetime. Unfortunately for Wing Bittlebaum, most of his obsessions were incorrectly ordered. Although sexual relationships between adults and children are obviously inappropriate for any time period or location, Bittlebaum s relationship with Willard was incorrectly timed by approximately sixty years. Despite not necessarily being an allegory for any modern problem in particular, Sherwood Anderson s Hands provides incredible insight into human need and want, and the drive to fulfill one s desires while ignoring a rightly ordered life in favor of an incorrect balance. Although many relationships can flourish without necessarily being ordered perfectly, Wing Bittlebaum s many illegal and unwanted relationships could never have succeeded due to his lack of understanding and empathy. • 12. Totalitarianism In Harrison Bergeron Kurt Vonnegut s Harrison Bergeron , is a short story that explores the ideas of humanity in the future. This author is blatantly proving how the saying everyone is equal is not entirely true. In this story, the government that imposes totalitarianism has went through the actions of processing equality to the citizens of the United States and through the agents involved with the United States Handicapper General. This showed how this government was able to take the idea of equality and end up stripping the citizens of processing individual thoughts, their creativity and intellect, and basically brainwashed society to believe nothing happening should be considered incorrect behavior Incidentally, Harrison Bergeron is not simply an interesting short story, but was intended for historical satire purposes. Harrison Bergeron was written and published by Vonnegut in 1961. Throughout the years, many different variations have been attempted by other authors. Vonnegut was an author who was an American and was viewed as having a very respectable reputation as a writer during his time. In ADPP, in this algorithm every robot hold the paths which it should avoid. When robot receives the information it merely upgrade it avoid path list and checks if the current path is consistent. If the current path is inconsistent the robot triggers new planning. Otherwise robots remain idle. The evaluation of the proposed ADPP algorithm with comparison with previous approaches Centralized prioritized planning (CPP) and SDPP is done. The evaluated runtime characteristics of the algorithms is the wall clock run time, communication complexity (the number of broadcasted messages) and solution quality. In the evaluated problem s number of Robots varies from 30 to 100. The average wall clock run time are depicted in figure 1a. The results show that the decentralized algorithms requires less run time than the centralized algorithm. Further, the ADPP performs better than the SDPP. The required number of exchanged messages are plotted in figure1b.For communication complexity for less than 60 robots decentralized algorithms outperform the centralized algorithms. The communication complexity of the decentralized algorithms start exceeding the centralized algorithms for more than 60 robots. The figure 1c shows the average costs. The ... • 15. Animal Intelligence Essay Animal Intelligence Intelligence is defined as the ability to acquire and apply knowledge. Psychologists have exploited this concept in many ways to try and determine whether non human animals are capable of intelligence. From social learning it is logical to assume that, since non human animals are able to both acquire and use new behaviours, they must be intelligent in some way. Heyes stated that there are 6 types of behaviour which suggest intelligence. These are imitation, self recognition, social relationship formation, role taking, deception and perspective taking. These 6 behaviours are referred to as the theory of mind (ToM). Imitation is the ability to copy another s behaviour, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This gives a good basis to ToM as intelligence is required to recognise that the mirror image is not another individual. This behaviour has been reported in the higher primates. Gallup s study required chimpanzees to be placed in a cage with a mirror. At first they reacted like the image was another chimp, but later realised that it was actually themselves. Gallup anaesthetised the chimpanzees then placed a red mark on one eyebrow and ear. After recovering, the chimpanzees would often touch the red mark, when they looked in the mirror. This supports the idea that higher primates are capable of self recognition. This experiment was tried out on other animals e.g. cats, dogs, and elephants with unsuccessful results. The fact that no other animals responded to this experiment means that it cannot be said for sure that all non human animals are capable of self recognition. Therefore some non human animals do not show signs of ToM. Evolutionary science suggests that the higher primates are distant relatives of human beings, having similar physiology may mean that higher primates are more capable of intelligence. Social relationships refer to an animal s ability to form bonds with others of its species. This relationship formation may be affected by the animal s status or role in the community. In ... Texting While Driving And Driving No matter how much effort state governments try to make to avoid people texting while driving, only so much can be done on the government s and law enforcement s side of the matter. Different states have different rules. Some outlaw texting while driving when under the age of 21 or 18. Other states have hand held bans on cell phones while some states have an all phone ban. Law enforcement officers who regulate and enforce traffic matters have to catch the person in the act of texting while driving. Catching a person in the act is not an easy task to accomplish as an officer of the law. Even a consistent and national law against texting while driving would plausibly not solve the calamities. I think the true issue of driving and texting is contingent with the drivers. Drivers should take heed to statistics, priorities, and lives involved regarding the issue of texting and driving. Many statistics can prove how texting while driving is a serious problem, and a majority of the drivers do not realize the risks. Other drivers know the dangers and risks of texting while driving, but do not have the appearance of caring. Although the amount of casualties resulting from texting while driving has decreased considerably, there is still a shocking number of deaths and casualties from this issue. The number of casualties and deaths from texting while driving have surpassed the number of drunk driving incidents. Drunk driving deaths a year amount to about 2,700 lives while driving and ... • 19. The Tax Laws And The United States Constitution Ever since the ratification of the 16th amendment to the United States Constitution, Americans have faced the burden of federal income taxes. Income taxes were first proposed as a better way of gathering revenue, as well as an effective measure to manipulate economic spending. However, the current tax code bears very little resemblance to the relatively simple codes that were originally written into law. Today s tax laws have grown astonishingly complex and unequally distributes the burden of tax liabilities. Our country should confront the issues derived from the increasing complexity of the tax laws and equally distribute the obligations to each taxpayer. Virtually all citizens and politicians alike, agree that the current tax code is entirely too complex, yet nearly every year the system gets more complicated, not less. The reason is that simplicity almost always clashes with the other goals within the tax policy. Most people believe income taxes should be enforceable, fair, and beneficial to economic wealth, all while maintaining simplicity. But even those who agree on the necessity of these goals often disagree about the hierarchical importance of each. As a result, the tax policies usually represent a portion of each competing goal, leaving no room for simplicity. For example, most countries tailor tax liabilities to the characteristics of the individual taxpayer. That can make taxes more fair, but also more complex. Income must first be traced from a business to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Role Of Chivalry In Beowulf The role of chivalry is a complicated concept for solitary heroes within Beowulf and Albrecht DĂźrer s Knight, Death, and the Devil. In Beowulf, the concept of chivalry is explained through the eyes of the hero, Beowulf, which is the idea of performing chivalrous actions in the face of death for glory; however, Beowulf does not realize that his actions will not keep his people safe in the end. In Knight, Death and the Devil, the idea of chivalry is the motivation of the knight on religious grounds to be chivalrous in the face of death. The Knight gives the impression that he understood that his actions would ultimately be meaningless, and he appears resigned to the idea. The argument can be made that chivalry is unsustainable in both texts, given that while it inspires these heroes to pursue these tasks, the result is that they believe that mild sacrifices, such as their own life, must be made to ensure victory; however, these two texts differ with their heroes anticipated outcomes of their sacrifices, which turns out to be for nothing. Despite having different outcomes of operating within a system of chivalry, these two texts similarly critique the outcomes of chivalry as being unsustainable based on the demands it places on heroes to sacrifice themselves. Rhythm can be defined as the movement of music, where meter organizes beat in music. Throughout the years composers have created rhythmic complexities to engage the listener with a different sensation when enjoying music by straying away from a monotone rhythm. Syncopation is the most common way composers achieve this goal. Syncopation is defined as the deliberate upsetting of the normal pattern of accents (Rhythm Meter). In other words, the accent is displaced from the strong beat in a measure to the offbeat, which falls in between stronger beats. In addition to syncopation, polyrhythm can produce a similar effect in throwing off regular accent patterns. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
