The Key Role Of Finance
The key role of finance in any business is to manage money; whether it be raising capital through
share capital and bank loans, raising credit (short term capital), or handling the costs of the business.
Without finance, a business would not function, as quoted by (Griffin, 2015); Money is the lifeblood
of a business and finance is the nerve center .
Key activities of the finance department:
Firstly, one of the key activities of the finance department is to maintain a check on the
costs/outgoings of the business. This is important because if the business spends too much, it may
have to dip into its capital money invested into the business to start it in the first place or it may have
to take out bank loans, in order to finance the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is very important because a business needs to know exactly where and when all of its money has
been spent at any given time in order to be able to reduce the costs for the future. For example, for the
year ending 2014 Arcadia Group generated £316.8 million revenue and finished up with £143.1
million pre tax profit. (Limited, 2014) The decisions made by the accountants in the finance
department leading up to and after the publication of these figures is essential to the financial success
of the Arcadia Group (Topshop, Top man, Wallis, etc). Without constant reviews and informed
judgements and decisions (Weetman, 2006) by the accountants in finance, the Arcadia Group would
start to make a loss and possibly, eventually go bankrupt. By evaluating the figures and reaching
conclusions on them, the Arcadia Group will be better able to maximize the profits for the company.
Key tools and ideas that are critical to finance:
One of the key ideas behind the finance function is the question; Is the business making a profit? This
is because without making a profit, a business would not continue to exist. For example, in 2013 Ford
made $8.6 billion in pre tax profits, but in 2014 Ford made $6.3 billion, so there was a drop of $2.3
billion (Ford,

Examples Of Political Antisemitism
Antisemitism is broken down into two areas both modern antisemitism, and political antisemitism, but
even before modern antisemitism and political antisemitism there was traditional antisemitism which
was spun off of Christian anti Judaism. The traditional way was created because Christians believed
the jewish people needed to be punished or reprimanded because of their rejection for Jesus Christ as
the Messiah, but also for economic misbehavior and in some cases people even believed the jewish
people had desire to control the world and this was the myth of the jews. The hatred was focused the
most on the stereotype of the Jew and not necessarily the people who lived within authentic Jewish
communities. Traditional antisemitism can be based ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Turning the government away from the real problems in the political realm, and toward the wrong

The Film Rocky Horror Picture Show By Richard O Brien Essay
In the film Rocky Horror Picture Show, the character Dr. Frank N Furter sings the words, So I ll
remove the cause, but not the symptom (O Brien) . This cult classic musical written by Richard O
Brien follows a newly engaged couple through a sexual journey as they lose their innocence and start
to conform to traditional gender stereotypes. Today youth of America are being bombarded with
conflicting ideas about gender, race and sex. These conflicting ideas can lead to skewed visions on
what defines masculinity and what defines femininity. Furthermore, sexual assault on college
campuses by men and particularly student athletes have come to the forefront of many news headlines
in recent years and while some believe that sexual assault stems from locker room culture , it stems
from a skewed sense of masculinity that has been created over years of consuming media. Many try to
educate these same men on what defines consent and how to properly act in sexual situations, but this
is merely trying put a temporary solution on a much larger issue. If people wanted the systemic issue
of sexual assault to be reduced, then the root cause must be removed. A twisted systemic view of
masculinity is the root cause of many sexual assaults because a twisted view of masculinity causes
unhealthy understanding of sexuality and consent as seen in college.
Stereotypical masculine qualities will include aggressive, non emotional and independent whereas
stereotypical feminine qualities will include

Legs In America
Introduction
The most resourceful part of the body is the legs. Legs are located in the lower part of the body. Legs
help one to get started, move around, run, jump, and squat. Attached to the legs is the feet. Feet are
located at the bottom of the legs and attached to each foot are five toes. Given a careful examination
of the foot, there is a big toe, the big toe constitutes balance. In comparison, Just as a body, though
one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ (1 Corinthians 12: 12,
NIV). Similarly, America has many resourceful parts, forming the United States of America. Not
everyone is located in these United States, or privilege to become part of the land of opportunity; as
there are those who are not privileged to have the resources of their legs, or balance themselves on
their own feet. A recommendation to experience a child like pleasure is Pensacola, Florida. Florida is

The Bastard Out Of Carolina
Bastard out of Carolina is a novel which examines the expectation of a mother child relationship, child
maltreatment and gender roles. It is based on the narrative of Ruth Anne Bone Boatright who grows
up in rural Greenville County, South Carolina in the 1950 s and 60 s. Bone s 15 year old mother,
Anney Boatright, conceived Bone out of wedlock after being injured in a car accident which
ultimately led to an illegitimate stamp on Bones birth certificate. Bone was raised in a very
disadvantaged part of town. In an attempt to make sense of the chaotic and confusing dark world she
lives in, she looked at her extended non traditional family for support (grandmother, Aunts, uncles and
cousins). Circumstances regarding socio economic status, gender, race, sexuality and child
maltreatment play out in Bone s life as well as in her relationships with others throughout the novel.
The focus is on Bone s relationship with her mother Anney, the abuse that Bone endured from Anney s
second husband Glen Daddy Glen Waddell and Anney s attempt to deal with the abuse she eventually
witnessed herself. Bone endured maternal neglect from Anney as Anney ignored the long term abuse
and ultimately ran away with the abuser to continue a relationship. Even after several witnessed
beatings, Anney would allow her love for Glen overpowers her need to protect and love Bone. Bone
was also a victim of physical, psychological and sexual abuse. After a couple of years into the
relationship with

A large right whale was stranded on Tohunga Beach. Efforts to save it by volunteers from Project
Jonah were unsuccessful. The Tohunga Council wanted to get rid of the corpse as it was starting to

out to sea was impractical, given its size and weight. After some discussion the council decided to

Enola Gay was contracted by the Council to do the job. Enola obtained all the necessary clearances

Summary Of Unnatural Causes
Episode one of the video series Unnatural Causes focuses on two very important topics that are of
extreme importance, they are Sickness and Wealth. Sickness and wealth is what the typical person in
life wants to have. The video starts off with opening in Louisville, Kentucky explore why people get
sick and why certain sickness and health depend on race and social class. The video walks through the
lives of different social classes to have a better understanding of how people in each class live. A
CEO, a lab supervisor, a janitor, and an unemployed mother are all monitored for a period of time to
show the audience how each person in their own social live and what struggles each member from
each social class goes through. People who are in the lower class level tend to worry more about not
being to pay the bills; moreover, will the family have food to eat tonight? These thoughts and
questions are what a typical person will go through almost every other day because and it all depends
on what is the person s social class. According to the video Unnatural Causes episode 1 Louisville

Women During World War Two
I think a lot of women said, Screw that noise. Cause they had a taste of freedom, they had a taste of
making their own money, a taste of spending their own money, making their own decisions. I think the
beginning of the women s movement had its seeds right there in World War Two. President Franklin
D. Roosevelt s quote clearly illustrates the significance of women in the workforce during World War
Two and the feelings women may have felt. World War II was crucial for women in the workforce
because it was the first time the government needed women in the workforce to replace men in their
jobs, while they were away at war. Although, women had some involvement in the First Great War,
there was no greater demand for women to the workforce then during World War Two. Although
women played a crucial role in the successes of the Second Great War, society had varying opinions
and outlooks revolving around women s involvement in the workforce. Not everyone was supportive
of women s involvement in the labor force because of the stereotypes formed many years previous to
World War II regarding women being simply homemakers and working only in their homes, or very
seldom as secretaries. This view of women caused many problems for women in the workforce and it
continues to be a problem for women today. It is evident while looking at this particular time in
history, that there were varying views of women being a part of the workforce; it is clear that there are
people who thought

Daft Punk Research Paper
The early days of EDM as concert attractions were off to an unsteady start with an audio/visual setup
consisting of little more than a few speakers and a film projector. Although, the shows changed and
matured with the genre, many point to Daft Punk s first appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and
Arts festival in Indio, California, in 2006 where the duo unveiled their now legendary pyramid as a
game changer. Manning a 24 foot tall aluminum pyramid of custom built supercomputers covered
with screens, Daft Punk created what many believe to be the best electronic show ever assembled, a
veritable LED infused honeycomb pulsing with music and purpose. The idea for the pyramid stage
setup came from Daft Punk s 2005 video for Technologic, which featured a little robot who chants the
song s lyrics which flash on a television monitor while sitting in a little red pyramid on a pyramid
themed stage where Bangalter and de Homem Christo are playing base guitars. The two thought it
would be funny to be perched in a larger pyramid in a crazy, tricked out show while trying to bring a

Ionotropic Receptors Research Paper
Ionotropic receptors is a binding site that opens when an ion attaches to the binding site. The
ionotropic receptor is also a direct method to the ion channels. Ionotropic receptors has a channel
where molecules move in and out of the ion channel. The ions that goes into the ion channel are made
out of sodium which cause the membrane to become small.
Metabotropic receptors is receptor that is a part of the binding site of a neurotransmitter. Metabotropic
is indirect and complex method to the ion channels. Metabotropic receptor process is also different
from the inotropic receptor. When the ion channel is open the molecule move to the ion channel then
molecule attaches to the metabotropic receptor and the ion channel closes.
Autonomic nervous system is a part of the different molecules in the body such as the smooth muscle,

The Misogynistic Claims Of St. Augustine
Overheard at Nova: St. Augustine is a bonehead. A misogynistic, uneducated pig, calling man the
image of God while subjugating woman to be only the glory of man. Are we truly this naive? First,
calling a saint calling anyone for that matter a bonehead? Come on Villanova, let s brighten up a bit.
Second, St. Augustine was no male chauvinist; he was a feminist beyond his time. I don t see what
sort of help woman was created to provide man with, if one excludes procreation. If woman is not
given to man for help in bearing children, for what help could she be? The outlook is pretty bleak for
our Villanovan Brothers namesake. A fine example of stereotypical Christian misogyny women solely
in existence for childbearing. Our modern society would be appalled by such a critique, with

We fail to recognize the centuries of gap between St. Augustine and our modern day society. However,
beyond a historical defense of St. Augustine, we can assert his feminist claims through scholarship and

because he lived in a time before the first printed Bible, before matches, before even the postal
service? A fairly weak base for an argument. One could just as easily say slavery in the United States
wasn t nearly as bad as history has written it, because it was a practice of a society centuries ago that
didn t know better. Or that in 200 years, we can excuse the modern day practice of male entitlement,
because it was merely a product of an era. That doesn t quite add up, does it? Sexism may not have

Women sacrifice as much as men, for example after giving birth they make impressive efforts to come
back to competitive levels while men have not been said to make any of these such efforts. This leads
to another point on how women actually have the ability to do things most men can t. For example,
men don t have the proper body types to perform in figure skating, synchronized swimming, or
gymnastics like women can. The competitiveness is the same. The quality and skill levels are the
same. Different, of course, but not inferior in any way (Ottoway). Even if a female was better than a
male at a certain sport they would still be treated as inferior. For example a female hockey player,
Rachel Fradette states, even if I was a better athlete than the male hockey players, my team still got
the worse ice time and treated as almost a joke when we practiced...women not only have to fight for
their stance, but they also have to be the absolute best at their craft (Fradette). When girls get treated
this way they then start to lose the love of the sport which leads to less and less role models and less
successful female athletes. These female athlete role models are important for future generations as
girls decide to also become athletes they want someone to look up to and learn from and realize to not
give up even if they are treated

Compare And Contrast Sam Houston And Joan Of Arc

Joan of Arc grew up as a peasant but by the end of the war, she earned her family a striking coat of
arms signifying her ascent into nobility. She came from an unknown village and rose to greatness
when she was a mere teenager, and as an uneducated peasant. She had the heart of a warrior, not of a
nineteen year old girl. She grew up very quickly and had the responsibility of a nation on her
shoulders. Sam Houston grew up very different. He grew up as a well off child and his calling did not

servicemen acted on their initial instinct to act out what they believe. Sam Houston was able to do
something no other man in his position could do. He stood up even though other people strongly

Henry Ford s Life And Accomplishments
Henry Ford was born on July 30th 1863, to his father William Ford and mother Mary Ford on a farm

Pros And Cons Of Illegal Immigration
Illegal immigration has been an ineradicable issue for decades. Hundreds of thousands of hopeful
immigrants have illegally entered the United States of America via Mexican border or the Pacific
Ocean whilst others entered the country legally through visit visas yet overstayed and found low
paying jobs to settle in the United States of America. Illegal immigration has both pros and cons: on
one hand, it helps the local economy as illegal immigrants aren t paid as much as the legal ones but on
the other hand they do not fulfill their taxes. The rise of illegal migration observable in the past couple
of years is a natural human response to the desperate situation of inability to leave the place where
they feel useless. Illegal migration can thus be easily curbed by making legal entry simpler.
People do not always leave their country with a happy and content heart, most likely because they can
t apprehend their future in their own countries which forces them to look for other options but when
the legal immigration process takes so long, people try to find shortcuts and loopholes. America is a
prosperous nation that attracts immigrants to migrate here and build their future they couldn t in their
own homelands. The idea of deporting all of the illegal immigrants regardless of their background isn
t just unreasonable, its costly and time consuming. The government just can t go door to door and pull
out these immigrants and deport them because this costs an extreme amount of

Fairy Tales Morals
A story always has a meaning or lesson it teaches. Fairy tales are stories with the addition of a magical
element. They, too, have meanings the reader is supposed to take away. Authors purposefully fill their
tales with symbols and characters that are meant to represent something. The meanings could be
intending to teach societal values or rules. There are infinite interpretations one could potentially
perceive from a single story. Likewise, a study from Cedarville University states, the Bible is similar
to fairy tales in that one can take several meanings from the same passage and interpret it differently
depending on that individual s stage in life (Foulkrod). Fairy tales with authors that are notably
religious recognized the similarity between Bible teachings and fairy tales and often use religious
symbols and themes to compliment the overall moral the story is trying to portray. Many of these tales
also have meanings and moral takeaways that represent religious values. This can be seen in the works
of the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, as well as Carlo Collodi. Religion is very prominent
in the works of the Brothers Grimm. Their upbringing can be attributed to the Reformed Christian
elements they reference in their stories. Jacob Grimm notes his Reformed faith as one of his earliest
memories in his autobiography (Murphy 46), and Wilhelm openly talks about his memories from
church in his own autobiography as well (Murphy 50). G. Ronald Murphy, the author of

The Use of Chiasmus to Highlight the Irony of Slavery in Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
According to Barton and Hudson s Contemporary Guide to Literary Terms, a chiasmus is a rhetorical
scheme that is particularly effective in creating irony through the reversal of accepted truths or
familiar ideas (189). Frederick Douglass uses the chiasmus throughout his Narrative of the Life of
Frederick Douglass, an American Slave to highlight the irony of slavery s existence in a country that
was built upon the ideals of freedom. Throughout his autobiography, we find several specific instances
of chiasmus that cause the reader to pause and focus on the point that Douglass is trying to make.
Each chiasmus is placed in an important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When his mistress taught him to read, she sparked a fire of humanity inside him that would continue
to grow until it eventually overpowered his slave qualities, and cause Douglass, the slave, to be made
into a man.
The transformation from slave to man occurred both over many years and in the space of a single
afternoon. The Narrative in its entirety is a story of that transformation, but the chiasmus found at the
beginning of Frederick s fight with Mr. Covey emphasizes that afternoon as the setting for the
metamorphosis. In the longer transformation, Douglass was made a man ultimately through his
willingness to take risks for the sake of freedom. He learned to read against his master s will, taught
his fellow slaves, and attempted escapes, all for the sake of freedom. A slave could not exist as a slave
forever with this burning desire for freedom within him. This lifelong risk taking for the sake of
freedom led up to the climactic afternoon where the slave fought the master and regained his
manhood. When Douglass fought Mr. Covey, he regained his sense of pride that had been taken away
from him. Mentally and spiritually, he was free. It was only a matter of time before he would no
longer be a slave physically either. Douglass uses the chiasmus to mark the beginning of this afternoon
to ensure that his readers will take note of its importance.
Douglass chose to mark the afternoon when his education was halted, the afternoon that made him
realize how important

An Analysis Of Gus Caseley s Journey In Sudan
Throughout the journey in Sudan, Gus Caseley apparently refutes the claim that Nubia was not a

The Process Of Survival In Hatchet By Gary Paulsen
The process of survival is a basis laid upon many significant factors and it can become an educational
experience in which an individual may learn the skill of independent thinking and will inevitably gain
new insights into themselves. These ideas are considered throughout the contemporary novel, Hatchet,
by Gary Paulsen in which the protagonist, Brian, undertakes tremendous trials. Through their
experiences, the protagonist obtains further knowledge about himself, others, and the world.
Through addressing barriers that have been thrust upon them, an individual will learn how to cope
with struggles in everyday life and gain increased knowledge about themselves. Hatchet is a novel
about a young city boy whose plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness while he is on his way to see
his father. All he has is a hatchet and a desperate will to survive. Your emotional state is very
important to how you act and this is evident when Brian was attempting to spear a fool bird. The
quote: They exasperated him to the point where they were driving him insane is a hyperbole that
demonstrates to what degree Brian is being challenged which teaches him better determination and
resilience. This is further reiterated in the quote: In the roaring plane with no pilot, he was alone.
Alone. which shows up in the text just before Brian crashes. This personification and repetition
teaches Brian about perseverance and the ability to be alone. This is also an example of truncated
sentences that

Social Class In The Great Gatsby
Dickens argues that a person should be defined by their own self, character, personality, actions, and
other traits which are specifically not their clothing, which is their wealth, which is their social class.
He includes several descriptions of the higher social classes, both as opposites to and comparisons
with the dress of the poor, but also as examples of how such arbitrary, socially constructed class can
hurt even the wealthy that this is a universal issue that must be resolved, not just a poor person
problem. The old gentleman who gets pickpocketed by Dodger is described as a very respectable
looking personage, with a powdered head and gold spectacles; dressed in a bottle green coat with a
black velvet collar and white trousers: with a smart bamboo cane under his arm (74). Why respectable
looking ? Why not describe how he acts, or what he thinks or feels ... Show more content on

Bumble is no exception once one removes his fancy coat, they remove his status, his authority, and, in
his specific case, his ego. Take note especially of the italics he still has a coat and a pair of breeches he

worthless to him and his former social status. The example of Mr. Bumble also serves to show how
clothing combined with social roles change and warp who their wearers really are more than just a
mask or costume, they being to shape the mind of the person (both how people see them and how they
see others), but said distortion is ultimately meaningless. Dickens is aiming to reach the conclusion
that class roles are random and therefore harmful, even to the rich, and the novel uses clothing from

The Treatment Of Hospice And Palliative Care
According to Cynthia R., of the Journal of Palliative Medicine, Medical technology has been
progressing in leaps and bounds since the second half of the 20th century (1). This advancement is the
result of ongoing studies of medical researchers, bringing about new curative treatments for a variety
of diseases. Many of these are extending the lives and increasing comfort of those that are terminally
ill. However, amongst the improvements in medical treatments available, they have become the
default method of practice even for patients that will not ultimately overcome their condition. When
given a diagnosis, patients are often thrust into a variety of treatments by health care providers.
However, when that illness is no longer treatable to the extent that the patient will be cured, patients
are often kept in the same realm of curative treatments despite their preferences. Hospice and
palliative care is a specialized form of medical care that provides terminally ill patients (and their
families) with pain management, family planning, and a focus on spiritual and emotional well being in
the last days of a patients life, outside of a hospital environment. Hospice and palliative care does not
mean that one is necessarily needing to be at an imminent stage before death. Rather, it is the ability of
patients with terminal illnesses to receive pain management and care in order to live out the rest of
their lives comfortably. Palliative care is said to have, encouraged medicine to

The Second Great Awakening swept across the United States, lasting from the 1790s to the 1870s.
Between the 1820s and 1840s, the Christian revival was at its peak. The revivalism quickly went to
reform, however. The northern part of the Great Awakening, inspired a great movement to social
reform. Many converts of the Second Great Awakening were quite determined to win as many people
as they could to Christ. Evangelicals also founded moral reform societies. Some wanted to reduce
irreligious activities on Sundays; others wanted to opt out gambling and prostitution.
Eventually, this led to the temperance movement. The temperance movement was the moderation or

Analysis Of A Small Place By Jamaica Kincaid
Antigua is a small island that was discovered in 1493, by Christopher Columbus. The natives that
lived there were made slaves by the British and the economy thrived on producing sugar. In 1834 the
British abolished slavery giving Antigua its independence. The sugar industry was failing so the
economy relied on tourism. A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid is about Antigua. Kincaid narrates her
novel in second person, blaming the tourists for ruining the culture of Antigua. Kincaid explains that
the British were cruel to the Antiguan people but she forgives them for it. Kincaid also talked about
how the Government is currently corrupt and how beautiful Antigua s land is. Kincaids novel is
broken up into four parts that address all of these issues in Antigua. The way A Small Place by Jamaica
Kincaid was written is effective in the way that it tries to persuade and inform the readers.
In part one of A Small Place, Kincaid tries to persuade the readers, she does this by talking directly to
them. Kincaid says that the tourists ruin the culture and that they are not justified in coming to Antigua
for a vacation. Kincaid thinks that tourism is ugly, an ugly thing, that is what you are when you
become a tourist (Kincaid 17). Kincaid is trying to persuade the reader instead of informing them with
a fact or observation. This direct use of second person is successful to persuade the reader. It is
successful because the reader might feel guilty for traveling and might change his or her perspective
on traveling.
In part four of A Small Place, Kincaid tries to persuade the reader. Kincaid tries to make the reader
think that Antiguas beauty is unreal. Kincaid also instead of informing you with facts or observations
talks about how the British should be punished for enslaving Antiguans and says in her opinion why
they did it. Kincaid wants the reader to feel that Europeans are truly unhappy, to satisfy their desire for
wealth and power, to feel better about their own miserable existence, so that they could be less lonely
and empty a European disease (Kincaid 80). This use of persuasion successfully makes you think
about human nature. It makes the reader think of why people would enslave others for money and
power.

Ernest Hemingway s Hills Like White Elephants
Ernest Hemingway s short story Hills Like White Elephants relies on symbolism to carry the theme of

Descriptive Essay About Onaway Island
Onaway Island
The glowing sun melts into the glistening lake waters through the dense pine trees. Pink and orange
hues are painted across the dimly light sky as wispy clouds float out of sight. A gentle wind leaves a
chill in the August air. Crickets chirp as the day transitions into night. Campers start to trickle into the
candle lit chapel, arms crossed, voices silenced. The angled ceilings and open walls allow for a fully

is truly an otherworldly experience. I walk into the chapel and make a beeline for the benches on the
far left of the chapel. These seats are angled just so the sun doesn t get in your eyes as it begins to set.
I shake the loose, dry, pine needles out of my sandals and watch them drift back onto the floor. I twirl
the handmade friendship bracelet encircled around my wrist as I glance around the lofty rafters.
Cobwebs missed by the early morning cleaning dangle lazily like doilies glued to the ceiling. Here I
sit sandwiched in between my best friends. Katie on my left and Becky on my right. We take up a
section composed entirely of just our friends. Whispered jokes and half smiles are flashed when the
leaders aren t paying attention. Bright colored Nalgene water bottles litter the ground beneath the
pews, each covered with more stickers than the next. Chaco clad feet tap are tapped on the bottoms to
shake out the stuck pine needles. I m a people

Why Is Mahatma Gandhi Unjustified
You must be the change you wish to see in the world Mahatma Gandhi (source from Mahatma Gandhi
Quotes. ). Many assassinations occur due to political, religious, and cultural reasons. Some
assassinations occur without explanation, or with explanations that sound illogical or ridiculous. On
January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was shot three times by his assassin, Nathuram Godse. Gandhi
was a man who only wanted what was best for his fellow Indians, and his love for his country and its
people were what motivated him to do what he did. He was the leading figure responsible for India
achieving independence, and he wanted to see a free and united country. Some may argue that he was
not a good politician however, having to put politics within every view can sometimes be too much,
which can cause arguments, leading to chaos. The first reason why Gandhi s death was unjustified was
because Gandhi wanted only what was best for for his fellow Indians, and his love for his country and
its people were what motivated him to do what he did. An example of him wanting what was best for
his fellow Indians is Gandhi leading several campaigns in which he intended to make public of what
unfortunate situation Indians were in inside their Country. This include the protest against the South
African government s refusal to allow for Indians to vote. He was significant to the the founding of the
Natal Indian Congress in 1894. This is an organization that became center in 1894 and helped political
resistance develop over a seven year period which began in 1906 (All stated in the article, Great Soul:
Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle with India. ). Another example was that in future years, is in 1913,
Gandhi negotiated with colonial laborers with Jan Smuts. Smuts was an Afrikaner (Afrikaans speaking
person in South Africa, especially one descended from the Dutch and Huguenot settlers of the 17th
century) and a racist who later became colonial secretary after the Boer War. The final decision
between the two managed to gain Indians rights by a little (All stated in the article, The Problem with
Purity. ) The second reason why Gandhi s death was unjustified because he was the leading figure
responsible for gaining India s

Essay On Atlantic Cod
This paper takes a closer look at spawning behavior of Atlantic cod, and explores a new way of
monitoring presence or absence of spawning cod at a particular site. Male cod are known to emit low
frequency grunts while spawning and courtship, and this study deployed a marine autonomous
recording unit capable of recording these grunts in a known cod spawning ground during the spring
spawning season. The MAR unit was deployed in Spring Cod Conservation Zone in Massachusetts
from April through June Cohen, D.M., T. Inada, T. Iwamoto, and N. Scialabba. 1990. Gadiform fishes

Preceedings of the virtual symposium Flagship species Flagship problems . Canadian Journal of
Zoology 89. 386 400.
In this publication, two Canadian biologists present their research that takes an in depth look at the
crash of Atlantic cod populations in the north Atlantic. Their research looks at historic catch, peaking
between 1962 and 1992, and the subsequent decline in spawning stock biomass as a result of this
overfishing. Hutchings and Rangeley also look at some trends in abundance and life history, broken
down by region, and find an overall drop in age at which an individual reaches 50% maturity,
suggesting lowered fecundity of the population. The paper concludes by outlining the many
importance s of cod, both commercially and from a biological standpoint, and most importantly
outlining specific and robust management plans that would allow Canadian Atlantic cod the conditions
to recover. This paper will be immensity powerful in contributing to the conservation issues and
solutions section of my paper.
Jenson, A. C. 1972. The Cod. Fitzhenry and Whiteside Limited, Toronto.
For many years Albert Jenson was the director of the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries Biological
Laboratory in Woods Hole. In this book, he chronicles Atlantic Cod, describing the life history and
ecology of the fish, as well as how humans have drastically impacted cod populations through
commercial fishing. He ends the book by describing conservation efforts that should be in effect but

Describe and Assess the Evidence That Socialisation Plays...
Socialisation refers to the process of learning one s culture and how to live within it. The process of
socialisation involves the transmission of culture from one generation to the next. It is during
socialisation that individuals learn the values and norms that play such an important part in shaping
human behaviour. Socialisation provides the skills and habits necessary for acting and participating
within one s society. Charles Cooley divided socialisation into two stages primary and secondary
socialisation. Primary socialisation is the early years of our socialisation. It occurs when a child learns
the attitudes, values and actions appropriate to individuals as members of a particular culture. The
most important agency of primary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anna was born to an unmarried woman, a fact that enraged the woman s father. At first forbidden to
bring the child into the house, Anna s mother attempted to place her in a children s home. When this
plan proved too expensive, Anna was moved to a series of foster homes. Finally, at the age of six
months, the child was returned to her mother. Because of the grandfather s hostility, Anna was
confined to an attic room where she was given only a minimum of care. She was undernourished and
emaciated and received almost no human contact. She was not spoken to, held, bathed, or loved. Anna
was finally discovered by a social worker in 1938. At six years of age, Anna was little more than a
skeleton. She could not walk, talk, or feed herself. Her face was expressionless, and she showed no
interest in other people. Over time, though, Anna made some progress. She learned to walk, feed
herself, and brush her teeth. She could also talk in phrases and follow simple directions. However,
Anna died at the age of 10, probably as a result of her earlier isolation. The story of Isabelle has a
somewhat happier ending. Isabelle, whose mother was also unmarried, was found at about the same
time as Anna. The child s grandfather kept her and her deaf mother confined to a dark room. Although
deprived of a normal cultural environment, Isabelle have the advantage of her mother s company. But

The Effects Of Victorian Culture On The Arthurian Legends
The Effect of Victorian Culture on the Arthurian Legends
The Arthurian legends stand as a mutable model of the perfect court and ruler which has been
transformed by authors over the centuries to fit new cultural ideals and Tennyson s Idylls of the King
is no exception to this pattern of transformation. With his retellings of the tales of King Arthur based
on earlier models of the stories, most notably the works of Sir Thomas Malory, Tennyson represents
some of the most common Victorian cultural views. This representation is most clearly observable in
his portrayal of the female character of Guinevere and the concept of sexual morality in a tale that
places great emphasis on the effects of the adulterous affair between Sir Lancelot and ... Show more

Essentially a woman s only expected or accepted role was to be a good wife and societal pressures
were exerted to ensure that women would adhere to this expectation. Women are essentially meant to
serve men in this society which is a contrast to Malory s Arthurian society in which men of the
chivalric code were expected to be in service to women. It is important to note the way in which the
Malorian world places such high value on knights providing service to women (Ackerman 8) which
seems to give women some power, but actually made women analogous to a prize or a pawn in many
respects and failed to give the female characters any active role in the story. The main distinction of
Tennyson s version seems to be the agency he gives his female characters, but that doesn t necessarily
mean women were represented and treated fairly in the poems. So, the two societies seem similar in
some respects yet the main difference between them lies in the agency given to female characters and
the amount of importance placed on different cultural ideals. The most significant of those ideals in
both Tennyson s retelling and the Victorian society in general is the exaggeration of feminine virtue
and subsequent emphasis of a woman s chastity as essential to the foundation of the society.
The portrayal of Guinevere in the two versions of the story provides an

Kitty Genovese Essay
Some may say that bystanders are terrible and have no sense of morality and yes, that may true for
some bystanders. The case of Kitty Genovese truly shows how cruel and unthoughtful bystanders can
be, but when we ask the question of why people would ignore someone in a crisis such as that, we
automatically make up rationalizations such as diffusion of responsibility but in reality that s not the
case. The idea of this new law is fantastic, absolutely. In reality, this law is unrealistic in what its
asking of us. Bystanders don t stand by and watch someone in a crisis because of diffusion of
responsibility, they stand by because they see people walk by someone in a crisis and think it d be
weird of him to go out of his way to help someone since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bystander would have to live with them not helping in the first place and would have that guilt on
their conscious. Now what i m saying is, this law isn t necessary because truly the worst punishment
to give a bystander is the bystander having to live with themselves after they have done such a thing or
actually what he hasn t done. There s a story that i heard recently where a man, a homeless man saved
a woman from being robbed on the streets of New York. This man, in the process of saving this
person, gets stabbed by the robber and the robber and the women flea on their separate ways. The
robber nor the women came back. Pedestrians walked passed this man time and time again and did
nothing until one young man came and turned him over on his back and after doing that, walked away.
Don t you think if you found out a man you attempted to help but gave up, died in that exact spot you
left him, would have a miserable life having to think of that day in and day

If Memantine Interferes With Alpha Tocopherol
Although this study was well done, it leaves some unanswered questions. The biggest question is if
memantine interferes with alpha tocopherol. While this study discovered that there is a connection
between the two, it did not uncover what that connection was. More research should be conducted to
determine the relationship between alpha tocopherol and memantine. Next, the vitamin E was taken
orally via a liquid filled capsule. According to a study by Dr. Dan Engle published in 2009,
compressed pill form of vitamins can have a poor absorption rate. The average person may not be
aware of this research, and the study could have explained why this type of tablet was chosen. With
that being said, a study could be conducted comparing the different between soft gel tablets and oil to
determine which form of vitamin E would give the highest absorption rate. Additionally, ninety seven
percent of the participants were male, which means that only three percent of the participants were
female. Because the focus was a male population, the question of whether vitamin E would affect
females the same way is not supported. Although males and females are similar, they are also very
different, and with that being said, a study that focuses on one sex cannot say that it is true for both
sexes without scientific evidence. Lastly, because the Department of Veterans Affairs Cooperative
Studies organized the study, all the participants were veterans. These veterans could have been

Theu.s. Invasion Of Grenada
The U.S. invasion of Grenada was the first major U.S. military operation ever since the end of the
Vietnam War. Undeniably, many have concluded that it may have in part been an assessment of the
purported Vietnam syndrome, the alleged condition that makes it problematic for the American public
to support U.S. military interference deprived of a just cause. As with Iraq, the early defences for the
invasion proved to be either extremely debatable or obviously false, hitherto it still received bipartisan
support in Congress and the approval of nearly two thirds of the American public. The invasion of
Grenada by the U.S was very unusual compared to other 20th century wars. It was by far the easiest,
shortest and most successful invasion for the United States during the 20th century period. The United
States intervention in Grenada has been characterised by some as a rescue mission, by others an act of
aggression. Therefore the purpose of this essay is to analyse and examine the reasons and causes
behind the U.S. led invasion into Grenada during the latter part of 1983, as well as the consequences
faced by both the United States government and the people of Grenada. The Grenada Invasion also
Codenamed Operation Urgent Fury, was the U.S. decision to invade Grenada after the overthrow and
subsequent killing of the Grenadian President Maurice Bishop evoked widespread criticism from
several different outlets (Green, 2013). Recognizing such outlooks, this essay also seek to examine

  • 2. The Key Role Of Finance The key role of finance in any business is to manage money; whether it be raising capital through share capital and bank loans, raising credit (short term capital), or handling the costs of the business. Without finance, a business would not function, as quoted by (Griffin, 2015); Money is the lifeblood of a business and finance is the nerve center . Key activities of the finance department: Firstly, one of the key activities of the finance department is to maintain a check on the costs/outgoings of the business. This is important because if the business spends too much, it may have to dip into its capital money invested into the business to start it in the first place or it may have to take out bank loans, in order to finance the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is very important because a business needs to know exactly where and when all of its money has been spent at any given time in order to be able to reduce the costs for the future. For example, for the year ending 2014 Arcadia Group generated £316.8 million revenue and finished up with £143.1 million pre tax profit. (Limited, 2014) The decisions made by the accountants in the finance department leading up to and after the publication of these figures is essential to the financial success of the Arcadia Group (Topshop, Top man, Wallis, etc). Without constant reviews and informed judgements and decisions (Weetman, 2006) by the accountants in finance, the Arcadia Group would start to make a loss and possibly, eventually go bankrupt. By evaluating the figures and reaching conclusions on them, the Arcadia Group will be better able to maximize the profits for the company. Key tools and ideas that are critical to finance: One of the key ideas behind the finance function is the question; Is the business making a profit? This is because without making a profit, a business would not continue to exist. For example, in 2013 Ford made $8.6 billion in pre tax profits, but in 2014 Ford made $6.3 billion, so there was a drop of $2.3 billion (Ford, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The traditional way was created because Christians believed the jewish people needed to be punished or reprimanded because of their rejection for Jesus Christ as the Messiah, but also for economic misbehavior and in some cases people even believed the jewish people had desire to control the world and this was the myth of the jews. The Film Rocky Horror Picture Show By Richard O Brien Essay In the film Rocky Horror Picture Show, the character Dr. Frank N Furter sings the words, So I ll remove the cause, but not the symptom (O Brien) . This cult classic musical written by Richard O Brien follows a newly engaged couple through a sexual journey as they lose their innocence and start to conform to traditional gender stereotypes. Today youth of America are being bombarded with conflicting ideas about gender, race and sex. These conflicting ideas can lead to skewed visions on what defines masculinity and what defines femininity. Furthermore, sexual assault on college campuses by men and particularly student athletes have come to the forefront of many news headlines in recent years and while some believe that sexual assault stems from locker room culture , it stems from a skewed sense of masculinity that has been created over years of consuming media. Many try to educate these same men on what defines consent and how to properly act in sexual situations, but this is merely trying put a temporary solution on a much larger issue. If people wanted the systemic issue of sexual assault to be reduced, then the root cause must be removed. A twisted systemic view of masculinity is the root cause of many sexual assaults because a twisted view of masculinity causes unhealthy understanding of sexuality and consent as seen in college. • 13. Women During World War Two I think a lot of women said, Screw that noise. Cause they had a taste of freedom, they had a taste of making their own money, a taste of spending their own money, making their own decisions. I think the beginning of the women s movement had its seeds right there in World War Two. President Franklin D. Roosevelt s quote clearly illustrates the significance of women in the workforce during World War Two and the feelings women may have felt. World War II was crucial for women in the workforce because it was the first time the government needed women in the workforce to replace men in their jobs, while they were away at war. Although, women had some involvement in the First Great War, there was no greater demand for women to the workforce then during World War Two. Although women played a crucial role in the successes of the Second Great War, society had varying opinions and outlooks revolving around women s involvement in the workforce. Not everyone was supportive of women s involvement in the labor force because of the stereotypes formed many years previous to World War II regarding women being simply homemakers and working only in their homes, or very seldom as secretaries. This view of women caused many problems for women in the workforce and it continues to be a problem for women today. It is evident while looking at this particular time in history, that there were varying views of women being a part of the workforce; it is clear that there are people who thought ... Manning a 24 foot tall aluminum pyramid of custom built supercomputers covered with screens, Daft Punk created what many believe to be the best electronic show ever assembled, a veritable LED infused honeycomb pulsing with music and purpose. The idea for the pyramid stage setup came from Daft Punk s 2005 video for Technologic, which featured a little robot who chants the song s lyrics which flash on a television monitor while sitting in a little red pyramid on a pyramid themed stage where Bangalter and de Homem Christo are playing base guitars. Even if a female was better than a male at a certain sport they would still be treated as inferior. For example a female hockey player, Rachel Fradette states, even if I was a better athlete than the male hockey players, my team still got the worse ice time and treated as almost a joke when we practiced...women not only have to fight for their stance, but they also have to be the absolute best at their craft (Fradette). When girls get treated this way they then start to lose the love of the sport which leads to less and less role models and less successful female athletes. These female athlete role models are important for future generations as girls decide to also become athletes they want someone to look up to and learn from and realize to not give up even if they are treated ... Sam Houston and Joan of Arc made an effort to stand up and do that very thing. Courage rises from deep within a person s character. The true courage these two people had to stand up against the odds, and to strive for what is right and necessary is astonishing. Joan of Arc and Sam Houston had many similarities and differences defining their courage. Joan of Arc grew up as a peasant but by the end of the war, she earned her family a striking coat of arms signifying her ascent into nobility. She came from an unknown village and rose to greatness when she was a mere teenager, and as an uneducated peasant. She had the heart of a warrior, not of a nineteen year old girl. She grew up very quickly and had the responsibility of a nation on her shoulders. Sam Houston grew up very different. He grew up as a well off child and his calling did not arise until he was older. Although they began and ended with difference fates, both courageous servicemen acted on their initial instinct to act out what they believe. Sam Houston was able to do something no other man in his position could do. He stood up even though other people strongly disagreed with what he had to say. He was alone in what he thought but did not capitulate to the single mindedness of the others. Joan of Arc on the contrary, had no one but the English against her. Her nation was rooting for her and she had the support of thousands of soldiers and the King of France himself. After their deaths, what they did still continued to impact their country. • 21. Pros And Cons Of Illegal Immigration Illegal immigration has been an ineradicable issue for decades. Hundreds of thousands of hopeful immigrants have illegally entered the United States of America via Mexican border or the Pacific Ocean whilst others entered the country legally through visit visas yet overstayed and found low paying jobs to settle in the United States of America. Illegal immigration has both pros and cons: on one hand, it helps the local economy as illegal immigrants aren t paid as much as the legal ones but on the other hand they do not fulfill their taxes. The rise of illegal migration observable in the past couple of years is a natural human response to the desperate situation of inability to leave the place where they feel useless. Illegal migration can thus be easily curbed by making legal entry simpler. People do not always leave their country with a happy and content heart, most likely because they can t apprehend their future in their own countries which forces them to look for other options but when the legal immigration process takes so long, people try to find shortcuts and loopholes. America is a prosperous nation that attracts immigrants to migrate here and build their future they couldn t in their own homelands. • 22. Fairy Tales Morals A story always has a meaning or lesson it teaches. Fairy tales are stories with the addition of a magical element. They, too, have meanings the reader is supposed to take away. Authors purposefully fill their tales with symbols and characters that are meant to represent something. The meanings could be intending to teach societal values or rules. There are infinite interpretations one could potentially perceive from a single story. Likewise, a study from Cedarville University states, the Bible is similar to fairy tales in that one can take several meanings from the same passage and interpret it differently depending on that individual s stage in life (Foulkrod). Fairy tales with authors that are notably religious recognized the similarity between Bible teachings and fairy tales and often use religious symbols and themes to compliment the overall moral the story is trying to portray. Many of these tales also have meanings and moral takeaways that represent religious values. This can be seen in the works of the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, as well as Carlo Collodi. Religion is very prominent in the works of the Brothers Grimm. Their upbringing can be attributed to the Reformed Christian elements they reference in their stories. Jacob Grimm notes his Reformed faith as one of his earliest memories in his autobiography (Murphy 46), and Wilhelm openly talks about his memories from church in his own autobiography as well (Murphy 50). The transformation from slave to man occurred both over many years and in the space of a single afternoon. The Narrative in its entirety is a story of that transformation, but the chiasmus found at the beginning of Frederick s fight with Mr. Covey emphasizes that afternoon as the setting for the metamorphosis. In the longer transformation, Douglass was made a man ultimately through his willingness to take risks for the sake of freedom. He learned to read against his master s will, taught his fellow slaves, and attempted escapes, all for the sake of freedom. A slave could not exist as a slave forever with this burning desire for freedom within him. This lifelong risk taking for the sake of freedom led up to the climactic afternoon where the slave fought the master and regained his manhood. When Douglass fought Mr. Covey, he regained his sense of pride that had been taken away from him. Mentally and spiritually, he was free. It was only a matter of time before he would no longer be a slave physically either. • 26. The Process Of Survival In Hatchet By Gary Paulsen The process of survival is a basis laid upon many significant factors and it can become an educational experience in which an individual may learn the skill of independent thinking and will inevitably gain new insights into themselves. These ideas are considered throughout the contemporary novel, Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen in which the protagonist, Brian, undertakes tremendous trials. Through their experiences, the protagonist obtains further knowledge about himself, others, and the world. Through addressing barriers that have been thrust upon them, an individual will learn how to cope with struggles in everyday life and gain increased knowledge about themselves. Hatchet is a novel about a young city boy whose plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness while he is on his way to see his father. All he has is a hatchet and a desperate will to survive. Your emotional state is very important to how you act and this is evident when Brian was attempting to spear a fool bird. The quote: They exasperated him to the point where they were driving him insane is a hyperbole that demonstrates to what degree Brian is being challenged which teaches him better determination and resilience. This is further reiterated in the quote: In the roaring plane with no pilot, he was alone. Alone. which shows up in the text just before Brian crashes. He includes several descriptions of the higher social classes, both as opposites to and comparisons with the dress of the poor, but also as examples of how such arbitrary, socially constructed class can hurt even the wealthy that this is a universal issue that must be resolved, not just a poor person problem. The old gentleman who gets pickpocketed by Dodger is described as a very respectable looking personage, with a powdered head and gold spectacles; dressed in a bottle green coat with a black velvet collar and white trousers: with a smart bamboo cane under his arm (74). • 32. The Treatment Of Hospice And Palliative Care According to Cynthia R., of the Journal of Palliative Medicine, Medical technology has been progressing in leaps and bounds since the second half of the 20th century (1). This advancement is the result of ongoing studies of medical researchers, bringing about new curative treatments for a variety of diseases. Many of these are extending the lives and increasing comfort of those that are terminally ill. However, amongst the improvements in medical treatments available, they have become the default method of practice even for patients that will not ultimately overcome their condition. When given a diagnosis, patients are often thrust into a variety of treatments by health care providers. However, when that illness is no longer treatable to the extent that the patient will be cured, patients are often kept in the same realm of curative treatments despite their preferences. Hospice and palliative care is a specialized form of medical care that provides terminally ill patients (and their families) with pain management, family planning, and a focus on spiritual and emotional well being in the last days of a patients life, outside of a hospital environment. • 34. Analysis Of A Small Place By Jamaica Kincaid Antigua is a small island that was discovered in 1493, by Christopher Columbus. The natives that lived there were made slaves by the British and the economy thrived on producing sugar. In 1834 the British abolished slavery giving Antigua its independence. The sugar industry was failing so the economy relied on tourism. A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid is about Antigua. Kincaid narrates her novel in second person, blaming the tourists for ruining the culture of Antigua. Kincaid explains that the British were cruel to the Antiguan people but she forgives them for it. Kincaid also talked about how the Government is currently corrupt and how beautiful Antigua s land is. Kincaids novel is broken up into four parts that address all of these issues in Antigua. The way A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid was written is effective in the way that it tries to persuade and inform the readers. In part one of A Small Place, Kincaid tries to persuade the readers, she does this by talking directly to them. Kincaid says that the tourists ruin the culture and that they are not justified in coming to Antigua for a vacation. Kincaid thinks that tourism is ugly, an ugly thing, that is what you are when you become a tourist (Kincaid 17). Kincaid is trying to persuade the reader instead of informing them with a fact or observation. This direct use of second person is successful to persuade the reader. It is successful because the reader might feel guilty for traveling and might change his or her perspective on traveling. In part four of A Small Place, Kincaid tries to persuade the reader. Kincaid tries to make the reader think that Antiguas beauty is unreal. Kincaid also instead of informing you with facts or observations talks about how the British should be punished for enslaving Antiguans and says in her opinion why they did it. Kincaid wants the reader to feel that Europeans are truly unhappy, to satisfy their desire for wealth and power, to feel better about their own miserable existence, so that they could be less lonely and empty a European disease (Kincaid 80). I shake the loose, dry, pine needles out of my sandals and watch them drift back onto the floor. I twirl the handmade friendship bracelet encircled around my wrist as I glance around the lofty rafters. Cobwebs missed by the early morning cleaning dangle lazily like doilies glued to the ceiling. Here I sit sandwiched in between my best friends. Katie on my left and Becky on my right. We take up a section composed entirely of just our friends. Whispered jokes and half smiles are flashed when the leaders aren t paying attention. Bright colored Nalgene water bottles litter the ground beneath the pews, each covered with more stickers than the next. Chaco clad feet tap are tapped on the bottoms to shake out the stuck pine needles. I m a people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rap music has made their own image of what women are in their eyes and this has caused others to treat females a certain way. Women have always been portrayed as weak, feisty, helpless, property, and more. Females start to believe this about themselves having low self esteem, not wanting to be in relationships, and thinking they aren t good enough. In reality, they might not feel that way, but that s how they are talked about in music so they believe they need to be that way. According to the author of The public should criticize violent music lyrics, women are objectified, often in the most obscene and degrading ways (Brownback). • 43. Why Is Mahatma Gandhi Unjustified You must be the change you wish to see in the world Mahatma Gandhi (source from Mahatma Gandhi Quotes. ). Many assassinations occur due to political, religious, and cultural reasons. Some assassinations occur without explanation, or with explanations that sound illogical or ridiculous. On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was shot three times by his assassin, Nathuram Godse. Gandhi was a man who only wanted what was best for his fellow Indians, and his love for his country and its people were what motivated him to do what he did. He was the leading figure responsible for India achieving independence, and he wanted to see a free and united country. Some may argue that he was not a good politician however, having to put politics within every view can sometimes be too much, which can cause arguments, leading to chaos. The first reason why Gandhi s death was unjustified was because Gandhi wanted only what was best for for his fellow Indians, and his love for his country and its people were what motivated him to do what he did. An example of him wanting what was best for his fellow Indians is Gandhi leading several campaigns in which he intended to make public of what unfortunate situation Indians were in inside their Country. This include the protest against the South African government s refusal to allow for Indians to vote. He was significant to the the founding of the Natal Indian Congress in 1894. This is an organization that became center in 1894 and helped political resistance develop over a seven year period which began in 1906 (All stated in the article, Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle with India. ). Another example was that in future years, is in 1913, Gandhi negotiated with colonial laborers with Jan Smuts. Smuts was an Afrikaner (Afrikaans speaking person in South Africa, especially one descended from the Dutch and Huguenot settlers of the 17th century) and a racist who later became colonial secretary after the Boer War. The final decision between the two managed to gain Indians rights by a little (All stated in the article, The Problem with Purity. ) The second reason why Gandhi s death was unjustified because he was the leading figure responsible for gaining India s ... • 45. Describe and Assess the Evidence That Socialisation Plays... Socialisation refers to the process of learning one s culture and how to live within it. The process of socialisation involves the transmission of culture from one generation to the next. It is during socialisation that individuals learn the values and norms that play such an important part in shaping human behaviour. Socialisation provides the skills and habits necessary for acting and participating within one s society. Charles Cooley divided socialisation into two stages primary and secondary socialisation. Primary socialisation is the early years of our socialisation. It occurs when a child learns the attitudes, values and actions appropriate to individuals as members of a particular culture. At first forbidden to bring the child into the house, Anna s mother attempted to place her in a children s home. When this plan proved too expensive, Anna was moved to a series of foster homes. Finally, at the age of six months, the child was returned to her mother. Because of the grandfather s hostility, Anna was confined to an attic room where she was given only a minimum of care. She was undernourished and emaciated and received almost no human contact. She was not spoken to, held, bathed, or loved. Anna was finally discovered by a social worker in 1938. At six years of age, Anna was little more than a skeleton. She could not walk, talk, or feed herself. Her face was expressionless, and she showed no interest in other people. Over time, though, Anna made some progress. She learned to walk, feed herself, and brush her teeth. She could also talk in phrases and follow simple directions. However, Anna died at the age of 10, probably as a result of her earlier isolation. The story of Isabelle has a somewhat happier ending. • 46. The Effects Of Victorian Culture On The Arthurian Legends The Effect of Victorian Culture on the Arthurian Legends The Arthurian legends stand as a mutable model of the perfect court and ruler which has been transformed by authors over the centuries to fit new cultural ideals and Tennyson s Idylls of the King is no exception to this pattern of transformation. With his retellings of the tales of King Arthur based on earlier models of the stories, most notably the works of Sir Thomas Malory, Tennyson represents some of the most common Victorian cultural views. This representation is most clearly observable in his portrayal of the female character of Guinevere and the concept of sexual morality in a tale that places great emphasis on the effects of the adulterous affair between Sir Lancelot and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Essentially a woman s only expected or accepted role was to be a good wife and societal pressures were exerted to ensure that women would adhere to this expectation. Women are essentially meant to serve men in this society which is a contrast to Malory s Arthurian society in which men of the chivalric code were expected to be in service to women. It is important to note the way in which the Malorian world places such high value on knights providing service to women (Ackerman 8) which seems to give women some power, but actually made women analogous to a prize or a pawn in many respects and failed to give the female characters any active role in the story. The main distinction of Tennyson s version seems to be the agency he gives his female characters, but that doesn t necessarily mean women were represented and treated fairly in the poems. So, the two societies seem similar in some respects yet the main difference between them lies in the agency given to female characters and the amount of importance placed on different cultural ideals. The most significant of those ideals in both Tennyson s retelling and the Victorian society in general is the exaggeration of feminine virtue and subsequent emphasis of a woman s chastity as essential to the foundation of the society. The portrayal of Guinevere in the two versions of the story provides an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Kitty Genovese Essay Some may say that bystanders are terrible and have no sense of morality and yes, that may true for some bystanders. The case of Kitty Genovese truly shows how cruel and unthoughtful bystanders can be, but when we ask the question of why people would ignore someone in a crisis such as that, we automatically make up rationalizations such as diffusion of responsibility but in reality that s not the case. The idea of this new law is fantastic, absolutely. In reality, this law is unrealistic in what its asking of us. While this study discovered that there is a connection between the two, it did not uncover what that connection was. More research should be conducted to determine the relationship between alpha tocopherol and memantine. Next, the vitamin E was taken orally via a liquid filled capsule. According to a study by Dr. Dan Engle published in 2009, compressed pill form of vitamins can have a poor absorption rate. The average person may not be aware of this research, and the study could have explained why this type of tablet was chosen. With that being said, a study could be conducted comparing the different between soft gel tablets and oil to determine which form of vitamin E would give the highest absorption rate. Additionally, ninety seven percent of the participants were male, which means that only three percent of the participants were female. Because the focus was a male population, the question of whether vitamin E would affect females the same way is not supported. Although males and females are similar, they are also very different, and with that being said, a study that focuses on one sex cannot say that it is true for both sexes without scientific evidence. Lastly, because the Department of Veterans Affairs Cooperative Studies organized the study, all the participants were veterans. These veterans could have been ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Theu.s. Invasion Of Grenada The U.S. invasion of Grenada was the first major U.S. military operation ever since the end of the Vietnam War. Undeniably, many have concluded that it may have in part been an assessment of the purported Vietnam syndrome, the alleged condition that makes it problematic for the American public to support U.S. military interference deprived of a just cause. As with Iraq, the early defences for the invasion proved to be either extremely debatable or obviously false, hitherto it still received bipartisan support in Congress and the approval of nearly two thirds of the American public. The invasion of Grenada by the U.S was very unusual compared to other 20th century wars. It was by far the easiest, shortest and most successful invasion for the United States during the 20th century period. The United States intervention in Grenada has been characterised by some as a rescue mission, by others an act of aggression. Therefore the purpose of this essay is to analyse and examine the reasons and causes behind the U.S. led invasion into Grenada during the latter part of 1983, as well as the consequences faced by both the United States government and the people of Grenada. The Grenada Invasion also Codenamed Operation Urgent Fury, was the U.S. decision to invade Grenada after the overthrow and subsequent killing of the Grenadian President Maurice Bishop evoked widespread criticism from several different outlets (Green, 2013).
