Rene Descartes was a French philosopher born in 1596. He is considered by many the father of
modern philosophy and continues to have tremendous influence in the philosophical world to this
day. The book, Meditations of First Philosophy, consist of six meditations and describes one
meditation per day for six days. In meditation two, he claims that we have better knowledge of our
own minds than of the physical world. This proclamation has sparked debates between countless
philosophers for centuries.
In meditation two, Descartes wax argument is an observation and an essential part of how he
develops his theory of the mind and body being separate from each other. It begins by Descartes
taking a piece of fresh wax and describing it. He describes the wax through his sensory perception
of it. He describes the faint taste of honey, the smell of flowers, the yellow coloring, the cool to
the touch, and the sound it makes when it is tapped. He takes all of these sensory perceptions
and understands it to be a piece of wax. He then melts the wax. When the wax melted it

Ugh! No! that was my first reaction when my mom told me that I had to ride a plane alone. 13
hours! How am I supposed to endure that long time, by myself? Is she seriously expecting me to
be fine after? I thought it was ridiculous and impossible. However, from the deep corner of my
mind, something ensured me that I m going to be fine. Rachel, you will be going to have a free time
that no one will disturb it, that voice was even luring me! So, of course, I fell into that lure.
Thanks to God, my seat was the aisle, and few women, who looked like a tourists, sat next to me.
They looked nice, so I was relieved. Time to set up my seat , I thought. My routine for making my
seat was like this: First, I put my bag under the front seat, taking out my phone and the charger.
Then I open the blanket that was given from the plane, put the small pillow on my back, and plug
in my earbud. Lastly, I turn on the monitor and pick some songs that I will listen throughout the
flight. These make the best seat for the flight; trust me, I know it well.
