Lucretius Writing on the Fear of Death Essay
At the most basic level of subconscious thought, every living animal possesses a desire to stay alive.
Usually, this instinct lays dormant, although in dire situations, we can be led to do unexpected
things. In addition to this subconscious drive, there is a socially constructed motivation for fearing
death. Thanks to the pervasive nature of religion throughout history, much of humanity has, at some
point or another, feared the prospect of eternal damnation and torture during one s life after death.
Although not every religion has a negative aspect of the afterlife, or even any semblance of an
afterlife at all, those religions which do contain some such construct receive much more attention in
this regard. Throughout history, many... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In On the Nature of Things, Lucretius argues that not only is the whole of the human body (both
tangible parts, like organs, and intangible concepts, like the soul) created from distinct types of
atoms, but that this is the basis upon which an afterlife may be disproved. One of the principle
tenets of atomism is that the atoms people are comprised of provide the basis for physical
sensations we might experience, such as heat, touch, smell, et cetera. Lucretius provides the
corollary to this view by noting that without some mechanism for processing these input data, we
would not smell things, or might burn our hands in a fire. This cognition of external stimuli is one
of the key functions of the soul atoms which permeate our bodies. The soul, Lucretius says, is
comprised of four distinct types of atoms: breath, heat, air, and a fourth, unnamed variety, which is
more mobile than the other three (3.231). The presence of these soul atoms can be proved by
observing a person s reactions to various ailments; sickness afflicts both the body and the mind, for
example, demonstrating that they are intrinsically linked. In addition, because sensation may occur
at any point in or on the body, the soul must be distributed completely and evenly throughout
oneself. Atomism says that no atoms are ever created or destroyed,

As food industry is saturated, it will be hard to add new outlets. Other than that increase in food
sources pricing, the continuation of annual dividend and price competition that driven by the
competitors hinder the capability to raise revenue. Nonetheless, to rectify this problem the
company has swift the focus from a value menu to a more diverse one. Another problem is that
there is limited product innovation and sometime customers will be sick of eating the same food

Testing Software quality assurance is a very important part of the software development and
installation. The main objective of quality assurance is to avoid problems or to detect them as
soon as possible (Shelly, Cashman Rosenblatt, 2003, p. 410). The best case scenario is to have four
instances of the system, a testing environment, a user acceptance environment, a production
environment, and a training environment. The program can be tested on the testing and user
acceptance environments. The initial and most important step of the testing phase is creating the
test plan. The test plan should include what features and functionality will be tested based on the
confirmed requirements. The next step is unit testing or code review. Unit testing involves the
QA person testing the code on their machine. Once code has passed the unit test, it will then be
released to the testing environment for system testing. The QA person can then test the
integration of the different modules of the code as a program rather than separate parts as well
as to find and report bugs and any data inaccuracy. The next phase of testing is the user
acceptance test. In this phase the users test the program for functionality and data accuracy. The
test phase isn t a linear phase, more of a circular, back and forth between the developers and the
QA people. After all phases have passed, the next step would be to open a change

Similarities Between Civil Rights And Civil Liberties
Civil Rights and Civil Liberties are two concepts that closely coincide with each other. Put
plainly, Civil Rights are freedoms given to citizens of a country by their government and, Civil
Liberties are their right to practice your Civil Rights. The easiest way to understand these words
is to retrace their first uses. The first use of the idea of Civil Liberties was in 1215, with the
signing of the Magna Carta. It granted the people of England very basic liberties such as protection
of church rights, and protection for barons from illegal imprisonment. As for Civil Rights, uses of
it can be traced all the way back to the Roman empire in the early 300 s. They were the first to
instate religious freedom, but the citizens were later forced to

It is completely based on fiction and it doesn t come closer to the reality. In the movie, romance of
a boy Edward Cullen and a girl Bella Swan is shown where boy is a vampire they met in a high
school. However it is not easy to digest that girl is in relationship with a vampire who drinks
animal blood while another vampire James comes in the town who wants to hunt Bella. There
is a fight between Edward and James where Edward gets succeeded to save Bella. The whole
story looks unreal and just a mixture of emotions and horror. Key problem in Twilight is the
concept that since Bella loves a vampire and to get him in her life, she has to die so she will also
be a vampire after death. Overall idea of the movie is good that two different kinds of kids comes
closer in a high school and falls in love but it doesn t look convincing. This movie doesn t show
any association of actual human spirit between the hero and heroine. This film is totally a fiction
based film because in real life no one is willing to die soon to be a vampire after death. It gives a

The Significance Of Church Going By Phillip Larkin
David Doan
Kevin Moore
05/21/2015
English 111
The Significance of Church Church Going by Phillip Larkin is a poem which hectors, but also
provides an interesting perspective on the significance and purpose of religion. Throughout the
poem, one can instantly recognize Larkin s agnostic beliefs because of the story s duel nature.
Church Going begins with an obviously atheist narrator ironically sneaking into an empty church.
Due to the narrator s ignorant and naГЇve personality, one can infer that the character could be a
curious young boy. While looking through all of the fancy decorations, books, and sacred items, he
begins to wonder what would happen to churches once people stopped practicing their faith and
most of all what the allure of religion is. In the end, the boy concludes that religion will forever
exist because there will always be big questions such as why are we here or what is the meaning of
life. Although Larkin is very skeptical about religion in his poem, it seems he cannot deny the
significance and impact the church has had in history. The church s ability to satisfy humanity s
want for a metaphysical entity, is the reason why there are so many followers even today. Larkin
first begins his poem by empathizing with atheists and viewing the church through their eyes. When
the boy sneaks into the church, one can tell how indifferent and almost disgusted he is towards the
building based on his descriptions. He points out how it is just another church:

Alcohol And Tobacco Use In Disney Movies
As a child, I watched several Disney movies over and over, and as I have entered college and
taken women s studies classes, I began to start questioning the influences Disney movies may have
on children. Without knowing it, we are constantly being sent messages in society, including
television and movies, like Disney movies. Disney movies are often shown to children at a young
age and almost always, results in children watching these movies over and over. Disney films have
several underlying messages that are often unconscious, but exposing children to these messages
can lead children making unconscious connections and form stereotypes constructed on the movies
they are exposed to. The purpose of this paper is to discuss under what conditions (if any), children
should be shown Disney movies. First, I will summarize main points and findings... Show more

These instances expose children to harmful substances in a comical fashion with zero explanations
of the harmful effects associated with the drug use. The Disney movies that portray these instances
are older, but still, have the potential of being watched several times by children. For instance,
Beauty and the Beast had 116 exposures of alcohol in the film and 101 Dalmatians had 21 instances
of tobacco use. It is difficult to say that Disney movies lead to children trying alcohol and
tobacco, but this is one example where these Disney films should be talked to with kids and
explain the harmful effects of the substances children are being exposed to. I remember 101
Dalmatians having a lot of smoking references and wonder if these exposures have any impacts
on the decision people make. These films are still important to discuss with children especially if
it is an older Disney movie and a lot of alcohol or tobacco exposures occur in a film, so the child
can begin to understand the negative consequences of those actions from a younger

The Right Of The Fetus Life
Marqui s famous article is against abourtion. His article is different and he tries to explain why
killing and adult human is wrong ans see if the same reason works for abortion. The main
argument is the idea that a fetus is considered a person at the moment of conceptrion. since the
fetus is considered a person than the has a futuree like ours. The fetus will have plenty of
experiences and happinies just like any other being. ( page448)
Unlike Marquis, Thomson s famous article defended abortion. Based on her premises, the fetus is a
person from the moment of conception. Thomson main argument in the article the right of the fetus
life is not absolutely right. Thus, she defended that abortion is morally acceptable in some cases
by talking about The violinist experiment , The Burglar and The Case of the People Seeds.
Every person has a right to life. So the fetus has a right to life. No dough the mother has a right
to decide what shall happen in and to her body; everyone would grant that. But surely a person s
right to life is stronger and more stringent than the mother s right to decide what happens in and to
her body, and so outweighs it. So the fetus may not be killed; an abortion may not be performed.
(Thomson, page438) Thomson talks about true premises. Every person has a right to life and
everyone has the right to control their body. A mother has the right to choose what will happen to
her body, but a life is more important. Therefore, the true premises have right

Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence And...
Introduction
In a study by Mandell and Pherwani (2003), the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI)
and transformational leadership style was examined in order to determine whether EI scores could
be used to predict transformational leadership style. In addition, gender differences in the
relationship between EI and transformational leadership were examined to determine if there is a
significant interaction of gender and emotional intelligence. This research is important, because
transformational leadership has been found to be the most effective style of leadership. Therefore,
if EI can predict transformational leadership style, it would be useful for organizations to use EI
measures in their selection battery for managerial positions and in development of current
managers. In the study, transformational leadership was defined as a leadership style that
encourages subordinates to look at their work from different viewpoints, motivates employees to
promote the organization s mission, and develops employee abilities. Emotional intelligence was
defined as an ability that involves self monitoring of one s own feelings and emotions, as well as,
monitoring the emotions of others in order to guide one s behaviors and make decisions.
Consistent with the previous research, Mandell and Pherwani (2003) found that EI scores do
significantly predict transformational leadership style. However, they found no significant
relationship between gender and EI while predicting

Loyalty In Barn Burning
Barn Burning, written by William Faulkner, shows the main character, Colonel Sartoris Snopes
(Sarty), struggling through major conflicts with along the theme of loyalty against himself, his
father and family, and the law. There are many possible themes but the theme of loyalty stands out
through the whole short story. Sartoris Snopes had a major conflict with his father, Abner Snopes.
Abner Snopes was an outcast from the county they lived in and was an angry man that the
majority of the time took things too far. He eventually started breaking the law by burning and
ruining other people s belongings and properties. from the beginning, Sartoris did not always agree

Fighting Against Terrorist Groups In The United States
The topic of fighting against terrorist groups is very complicated because there are multiple

everyone associated the terrorist groups.
(Al qaeda: 9/11 ISIS: Charlie Hebdo, Paris and San bernadino other groups I dvon t know the

shouldn t send US troops to those countries to do the fighting . For this we need allies and enough
supply and strategies to help our allie fighting against them. The huge issue of terrorism may never

Truman and the Creation of Israel Essay
Truman and the Creation of Israel
With the growing pressure for a new state of Israel after the atrocities committed against the Jews
in World War Two, President Franklin D Roosevelt s adopted a neutral policy towards Palestine.
Roosevelt felt like the United States needed complete cooperation from Jews and Muslims before
they could get involved. When Roosevelt passed away in April of 1945, Harry Truman was thrown
into the presidency of the United States. Along with the ongoing war with Japan and difficulties
with the Soviet Union, there was immediate pressure from Zionist leaders to get something done.

Truman ignored the advice of his most trusted advisors because his Christian religious background
and its emphasis on biblical teachings influenced his beliefs, value system, and moral absolutes, all
of which directed him toward actively assisting in the creation of Israel. It is well documented that
Harry S. Truman was a very religious man. His strong Christian beliefs were vital in the early
decision making process on the Palestine conflict. Harry S. Truman was born in the small town of
Lamar, Missouri. When Truman was 6 years old, his family moved so that Harry could attend a
church school in Independence, Missouri. The opportunity for Harry to be raised on strong
Christian values was one of his parents top priorities. Harry took a special interest in reading,
writing, and especially history. Studying the Bible became a fascination for Harry even as a
young child and the Bible became a vital part of Harry s upbringing. He was known as a bookish
learner and a great student of history (Hillman). Truman s fascination for the Middle East was
evident. He stated that, It was here where so much of our history was made. (Hillman) Truman
once held a meeting in the Oval Office to discuss the historical significance of the Middle East and
especially the Palestine region. He pulled out a map from his desk and began talking about the
Middle East. Truman spent over an hour discussing the historical significance of different areas of
Palestine.

What Is The Election Of 1912 Slogan
Presidential Election of 1912 In the presidential election of 1912 the Democrat Woodrow

Eugene Debs all had their opposing views on the issues that concerning the future of democracy
in America. Some of the issues were; the Conservation of Natural Resources, Direct Democracy,
Labor, Race, Tariff, Trusts and Regulation of Business, and votes for Women. Majority of the
people desired change, as would I if I were to have lived during this time period . My vote would
have been for Theodore Teddy Roosevelt, as the change he promises is fair compared to the
other candidates. Labor would be one of the issues that would be most important to me as a
voter. Working is part of life, it s necessary to be able to provide for your family. In 1912, the
working conditions were not safe or healthy. The long working hours, the dangerous work space,
the low pay all would make people desire change. As a voter, I would want to know that in the
future I would be safe at work with good pay to be able not to live in poverty. There were many
strikes that occurred, demanding change in labor in 1912. In the Lawrence Strike, people fought
for higher wages, shorter hours, safer working conditions, regulation of woman and child labor,
and workmen s compensation. Another issue that would be important to me as a voter would be
the tariff. The Tariff is a source of federal revenue. It s a way for the United States

Justice and Moderation of the Soul in The Republic, by Plato
In his philosophical text, The Republic, Plato argues that justice can only be realized by the
moderation of the soul, which he claims reflects as the moderation of the city. He engages in a
debate, via the persona of Socrates, with Ademantus and Gaucon on the benefit, or lack thereof, for
the man who leads a just life. I shall argue that this analogy reflecting the governing of forces in the
souland in city serves as a sufficient device in proving that justice is beneficial to those who
believe in, and practice it. I shall further argue that Platoestablishes that the metaphorical bridge
between the city and soul analogy and reality is the leader, and that in the city governed by justice
the philosopher is king.

This city eventually evolves into the feverish city. All desires are tried to be filled to its fullest
simultaneously. These conflicting desires cause unhappiness.
Glaucon sees the issue from the perspective of personal gain or loss, while Plato sees it from
outside that realm in the sphere of absolute truths. Clearly, an absolute truth is more viable and
defensible than a personal interest. Justice is a higher order than personal advantage and as is
associated with happiness whether one receives a reward for justice or not. The argument Glaucon
raises against the absolutism of justice is exemplified in his story of the man who discovers a gold
ring that allows him to become invisible. Glaucon proposes these two representative men as
extreme examples of the two sides of the argument and suggests that their positions be examined
after their death to see which was happier, based on the premise that the unjust man meted out
injustice at will without ever suffering it himself, while the just man acted only justly but was
treated unjustly himself. Glaucon takes this example to the extreme, with the just man being:
whipped...racked...bound; he ll have both his eyes burned out; and at the end, when he has
undergone every sort of evil, he ll be crucified and know that one shouldn t wish to be, but to seem
to be, just (39). Glaucon sets these two men at extremes to prove his point that happiness does not

Monsanto Environmental Effects
Monsanto has taken a bold approach to create a product that increases the world s food supply at a
time when urban sprawl and population growth is extremely high. Land for farming is becoming
more scarce as the profitability of being a farmer is shrinking. Monsanto has done a great thing to
attempt increasing crop yields through genetic modification. However, the history of chemical use
has shown both short term and long term health issues in field workers (Harvey, 2014). To continue
to build on the successful increase of produce yields while limiting the consequences of chemicals
used, Monsanto should use fewer chemicals, research short and long term effects of chemical use,
and support the sustainability efforts for clean water. Using fewer chemicals would help keep the
consumption of harmful chemicals to a minimum. This would reduce the harmful side effects seen
in many consumers who eat conventional produce. It would also limit the creation of more harmful
chemicals that have the potential to contaminate large populations of crops, animals, and people.

Describe The Difference Between Atria And Ventricles
The atria and ventricles are relaxing. The atria are filling with blood from the veins and the
ventricles just completed a contraction. The ventricles relax and the right AV valves open. When
the heart rate increases atrial systole begins, which causes a contraction that pushes blood into the
ventricles. The atria is contracting causing the depolarization wave to move through the cells of the
AV node then down the Purkinje fibers to the apex of the heart. Ventricular systole begins as the
muscle squeezes the bloodtoward the base. The blood being pushed along the AV valves cause
them to close. This causes a vibration of the AV valve and creates the first heart sound S1. S1 is
the lub sound heard when the AV valves close. This indicates

Poor Richards Almanac Essay
First published by Benjamin Franklin in 1732, Poor Richard s Almanack was a guide to both
weather forecasts and wise sayings. Franklin used the pseudonym Richard Saunders in writing the
text, which became an annual publication up until 1757. Response to the almanac was
tremendous, and it sold as many as 10,000 issues a year. Second only to the bible, Poor Richard s
Almanack was one of the most popular and purchased publications in colonial America. The
almanac stressed the two qualities Franklin found to be essential to success, industry and frugality.
Benjamin Franklin wrote this in hope of having a positive effecton the colonies.

Overall, these sayings changed many of the colonist s lives, and made them think about how they
were conducting their lives.
Besides its many proverbs, the almanac contained forecasts for weather in the colonies. These
forecasts were based on the different weather patterns that Franklin predicted, and because they
were only predicted, they were not always accurate (Giblin 26). The forecasts proved to be very
helpful to the farmers and plantation workers when determining the kind of seasons the crops
would have. Weather played a very important role in the lives of the early colonists, and the
almanac provided a means for people to arrange their lives according to these weather forecasts.
Although not the most important part of the almanac, the colonists were always discussing the
accuracy or imprecision of Franklin s predictions.
In conclusion, by writing and publishing Poor Richard s Almanack, Benjamin Franklin made an
enormous contribution to the American public. It provided informatio0n on many topics that
people had not addresses publicly ever before. It also predicted the weather forecast, which was

Same Love By Macklemore And Ryan Lewis
Same Love by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
Can you ever recall a time when you heard a song reaching out to you with lyrics that literally
called out to you? Same Love by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis does exactly this. The song was
written in 2013 during legalization of same sex marriage in the state of Washington. The songnot
only reached the lives of those in Washington but reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100
songs in the United States and number 1 in New Zealand and Australia. Taking a closer look at
the lyrcis, the audience can see Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are not just making money off of
the song, they are grasping the lives of many in each chorise for example Macklemore s opening

The Psychology Of An Adolescence Essay
It is apparent that children are taking in music from numerous sources in their everyday lives. The
psychology of an adolescence gives a unique look on how certain stimuli, such as music, can affect
the way they think, and more importantly, act. The first place to look would be the brain, looking
into what makes up these processes. The teenage brainis an ever changing organ, that it constantly
molding to stimuli that affect it on a daily basis. This stimulus includes music, which has similar
effects, as would food, drugs, and sex (Kassem, 2014). In the vast majority of individuals, listening
and even participating in music can affect both behavior and emotions. Overall, there a four
sections of the brain that are affected by music, the first being the auditory cortex. This portion is
located on both sides of the brain, slightly above the ears. Its main function is to interpret the
sounds that are coming through and analyze the volume, pitch, speed, melody and rhythm (Kassem,
2014). The second portion is the Cerebrum, the largest section of the brain that is located at the top
of the head. A few regions in the cerebrum have different functions in the ability to interpret music.
The inferior frontal gyrus is responsible for remembering music lyrics and sounds through being
either heard or sung. The second region of the cerebrum is the dorsolateral frontal cortex. This
region is stimulated when hearing music or sounds, which allow it to bring up images that are

Impact Of Depreciation On The Construction Industry Essay
As part of the business and finance module, I am require to write a report, discussing how
depreciation impacts a firm in the construction industry. Within this report I will discuss different
areas of depreciation such as what is depreciation? , causes of depreciation, its importance in the
construction industry, how depreciationaffects profits and how depreciation can be measured. I
will also discuss the different methods for calculating depreciation and the effects on accounts if
depreciation is not accounted for. In this report, I will be giving examples of fixed assets that are
common to the construction industry and also give examples of how depreciation is calculated.
What is Depreciation?
Depreciation is the reduction in the value of certain fixed assets. It is a periodic reduction of
fixed assets, usually done every year. Fixed assets are assets that add value to the company.
Examples of fixed assets that can be depreciated are vehicles, buildings, machinery, equipment
and fixture and fittings. The only fixed asset that is not depreciated is land, because it is not
worn out overtime, unless natural resources are being exploited. When a company buys a new
fixed asset it doesn t account for the full cost of it as one single large expense, instead the expense
is spread over the life time of the asset. This is done by depreciating the asset. For example a
company purchases a CNC router for €50,000 and will be used for five year. If they pay the full
amount in the

Customer service is the process of interacting with the customers and the companies to understand
the customers demands and queries. The customer service is there for each top restaurant who
wants to provide a better dining experience to their customers and to get feedbacks from them
(Huemer and Setzer, 2011). The customerservicehelps the company or the restaurants to understand
the needs and demands of its customers. By doing that, the company can retain their customers who
become loyal to the restaurant after certain period of being served and thus, the restaurant wins the
heart of its customers. The main objective in carrying out this research is to determine the
importance of customer service process in the acquisition of customer loyalty and their retention to
the restaurants in UK by taking the special reference of top two restaurants where one is Berners

1.1 Background of the Research
From various studies, it has been found that the restaurants are able to win the heart of their
customers through good quality and tasty food meals and by giving proper services, which will
fulfil their wishes. Therefore, a restaurant should look after the demands and needs of its consumers
and based on that should prepare its plan for future in introducing new items in their menu and
services (Padua, 2012). Different groups and organizations already have carried out many

A Short Note On B2b And B2c Marketing
Differences in eCommerce for B2B and B2C Marketing
Differences in eCommerce for B2B and B2C Marketing
Building a B2B eCommerce platform generates big differences from trying to market retail
products to consumers. Unlike B2C marketing, cultivating each potential buyer is more critical and
challenging. Most business buyers are highly educated, logical and perceptive, so they tend to
appreciate platforms that offer them conveniences for researching products and product lines,
managing complex shipping strategies and handling special needs such as winning approval from
buying committees or multiple decision makers. That s why it s important to develop a business
marketing strategy that incorporates buyer identification, expedited searches for product and, third
party information about product specifications and supply chains. B2B platforms share some
similarities with B2C websites, but there are many inherent differences that marketers need to
understand.
Traditionally, B2C versus B2B was often defined as business marketers being more sensitive to
price, customer loyalty and working business relationships while B2C marketers tried to create
excitement for their products through emotional connections. While this definition remains true,
the lines are blurred because B2B companies now use B2C techniques, social media and heightened
user experiences to nurture long term business relationships. The goal of a savvy business marketer
is to generate an emotional response for the

Disaster termed as a serious disruption of the functioning of society, causing widespread human,
material or environmental losses which exceed the ability of the affected society to cope using its
own resources.
Disasters are not totally discrete events. Their possibility of occurrence, time, place and severity of
the strike can be reasonably and in some cases accurately predicted by technological and scientific
advances. It has been established there is a definite pattern in their occurrences and hence we can to
some extent reduce the impact of damage though we cannot reduce the extent of damage itself
Generally, disaster has the following effects in the concerned areas,
1. It completely disrupts the normal day to day life
2. It negatively influences the emergency systems
3. Normal needs and processes like food, shelter, health, etc. are affected and deteriorate depending
on the intensity and severity of the disaster.

refers to the management of natural catastrophes such as fire, flooding, or earthquakes. Related
techniques include crisis management, contingency management, and risk management.

The Influence Of Beauty During The Heian Era
This period of Japanese history is notable by its visual impact. During the Heien era women had
the most influence upon the social aesthetics of society at the time. They dictated what was
beautiful in all things, including poetry, wardrobe, the arrangement of their homes and gardens.
Such a profound influence has continued to be important within Japan today, as many of the
Heian precepts of beauty are still considered the height of society today. Beauty, in all things, was
considered of utmost importance: in language, the written word, the spoken word, the costume,
gardens, and in the very essence of the culture. Mono no aware, a term coined in the 19th century
by Motoori Norinaga in regards to the Heian concept of beauty, best describes the Heian thoughts
of beauty. Beauty is precious, because it is brief (Hooker, 1999). The term aware during the Heian
era represented sensitivity to things ranging from beauty to sadness, life, love or death. In the
letters, diaries, literature and poetry, the fashion stands out and is the most obvious and most
scrutinized aspect of Heian beauty personified. While the men, too, had splendid robes to wear,
their color options and individuality was constrained by the sumptuary laws and their rank (Bryant,
2004). However, the women wore juni hitoe (called karaginu mo, with formal court layers, which
allowed a huge canvas upon which to express their individuality and fashion sense. Moreover, for

Creative Imagination In The Illustrated Man By Ray Bradbury
The scientific novel The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury collects 18 different stories and shows

one of them, which related to most of the story. It points out the dangers of imagination for children

experiences stimulate imagination, while negative experiences of imagination lead people to

Plan of Investigation During the time period when Franklin D. Roosevelt was in office, it was

that happened, Roosevelt did not hesitate to ask Congress to officially declare war on Japan.
During the war, there was a proposal of an atomic bomb landing over Hiroshimaand Nagasaki to

the Japanese were already on the verge of collapse (Freeman 1). Although, it can be arguable
that Japan was strong and would not go down without a fight and it was just out of the question

In document seven, McKinley thought by taking over the Philippines it would ensure that the
Filipinos wouldn t fight against each other any longer. Also in this document it shows that he wants
to educate them and civilize them instead of letting them take themselves over. In document eight,
militarism was shown because the French were using powerful weapons against the Vietnamese. It
also stated that the French were using large warships, filled to capacity with soldiers with cannons.
Phan Thanh Gian said, No one can resist them. They go where they want, the strongest ramparts fall
before them. The Vietnamese stood no chance against the French navy, this is why militarism is
shown in this document. In document nine, which is a map of Africa in 1914, past the Berlin
Conference that took place in 1884 1885. The map shows that there is mostly all European
countries seizing the continent and no African countries, the only ones are the independent, and
the only two that survived were Liberia and Ethiopia. These political forces are very powerful if

Should the government only restrict an individual’s...
In a democratic society, it is generally considered the Government s role to promote morality and
justice within its citizens and seek to restrict supposedly immoral and unjust acts. Thus if an act is
to be considered immoral, it seems obvious to suggest that the government is justified in
restricting it regardless of whether it is harmful to others. However, since everybody has a
different understanding of morality and freedom, no Government could legitimately restrict an act
on the basis of it being immoral . Thus it seems more plausible to suggest that the Government
should only restrict actions which everybody can agree should be restricted. However it s not
clear where the line should be drawn or how a consensus on the issue could be... Show more content

While Mill is clear that offence is not sufficient to be considered harm , he does seek to ban
some things which may merely be offensive such as public indecency. He doesn t give explicit
examples in this instance, merely that there are some things which are acceptable in private, but
when performed in public go against the general concept of good manners . While this notion
may be agreeable to some, it s difficult to justify given Mill s other beliefs surrounding harm.
There are many acts which may be accepted in public by some and not others, for many there is
little wrong with homosexuality being exhibited in public, but for others even the mere thought
of it being practised in private causes them great distress. Although it s not obvious where the
line should be drawn in terms of public indecency, it seems obvious that everybody has a limit as
highlighted by Joel Feinberg (offence to others). Feinberg used a thought experiment concerning
a ride on a bus in which the people around you begin to perform slowly more intolerable acts
beginning with mere horrible smells and concluding with sexual acts being performed on an
animal. This demonstrates that if we wish to accept making sex acts with an animal on a bus
illegal, we may not be able to argue for it without also legitimising a restriction on other more
mundane acts of public indecency such as picking your nose. Although Mill didn t explicitly state
where he would have drawn the line in regards

Financial Stability In African American Life Essay
Financial stability is a problem that still badly impacts people and it is hurting their lives.
Believe it or not, in recent years it has been reported that African American completely are behind
on the financial stability status and being able to be financially free. Not many people are aware
that there is such problem because it usually does not happen to them. African Americans on the
other hand, have been targeted by the same discrimination for many decades. For many decades
African Americans have lived with the lack of possibility of being financially free and have yet to
achieve it because many things like; jobs, housing, paying bills and living from check to check
hold them back. Minorities are often held back by the fact that they have other responsibilities...

People often have problems with being able to get out of poverty because they don t know how
to handle or control where their money goes. These problems root from the family; a person s
family is a big contributor to how a person decides to save money and whether or not they come
from an impoverished environment. At a young age a person learns how to save money, be
responsible, and spend just want is needed. Also, if a person is born into poverty that may dictate
many things for the future because this way everything will be more difficult; this is more common
in African Americanhouseholds all over the country. It could be very difficult to come out of
poverty and become financially free, it s possible but it s difficult.
Consequently, African Americans cannot succeed because they don t receive equal treatment.
They don t receive the same possibilities and chances as people from other races. In recent years
this problem had been close highlighted, but it has never solved. It hasn t been solved because
people don t necessarily realize that this problem is very important. It is important because if

Analysis of Tchaikovsky s Swan Lake Essay
Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular of all composers. The reasons are several and
understandable. His music is extremely tuneful, opulently and colourfully scored, and filled with
emotional passion. Undoubtedly the emotional temperature of the music reflected the composer s
nature. He was afflicted by both repressed homosexuality and by the tendency to extreme
fluctuations between ecstasy and depression. Tchaikovsky was neurotic and deeply sensitive, and
his life was often painful, but through the agony shone a genius that created some of the most
beautiful of all romantic melodies. With his rich gifts for melody and special flair for writing
memorable dance tunes, with his ready response to the atmosphere of a theatrical situation... Show

1. Scene
The harp plays ascending scales whilst the oboe plays a minor legato melody. The bass strings play
pizzicato then the rest of the string section play tremolando and Crescendo. The brass repeats the
melody, accompanied by the orchestra and a string tremolando inverted pedal. A string melody
follows, accompanied by pizzicato strings and brass. There is a series of suspensions in the brass
with perfect cadences, then an anticlimax with descending strings and brass. The main melody is
repeated again, syncopated, in augmentation then there is a diminuendo as melody strings then
French horn play melody.

The introduction opens with a descending minor scale by pizzicato strings, followed by three
sforzandos in the orchestra. Section A begins with strings, woodwind and brass playing a waltz
rhythm, which modulates to major. The strings play melody 1, which is then repeated with piccolo
countermelody. Brass and string crescendo and cymbal crash before strings play melody 2 which

Korea Personal Accomplishment
While I was stationed in Kunsan Airbase, Korea, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to be
involved in many new experiences. I was in a foreign country I had never been to and I was also
working a job that was entirely different from my previous one. Out of all the fresh experiences I
had in South Korea though, one stands out from the others. It was stressful, it was challenging, but
it was my most significant personal accomplishment while stationed there. It was the time I
organized a POW/MIA 5K. Every year militarypersonnel on Kunsan AB choose to honor the

However, when I initially volunteered, I had no idea the work that was involved in organizing an
event for a base nor how much time I would need to spend on the logistics. We started having
meetings in early June and the POW/MIA events would take place in September. A group of about
ten of us would hold a meeting every week in order to come together, share ideas, and update the
status of our individual event to the head organizer of all the events, Sergeant Struckel. It was in
those meetings that I was made aware of how many different organizations had to be involved in
putting something together for an entire base. Portions of the planning process that I thought would
be clear and simple ended up being more complicated than expected. The first part was to plan
how I wanted the day of the event would go. I decided that the 5K would be advertised as an
optional ruck march where members could carry a minimum weight of 30lbs with them across
the finish or run. Then after the 5K, we would gather around a bonfire for a Watch Fire event
and the base chaplain would say a few words about the significance of a Watch Fire and relate it
back to POW and MIA. From there, we would gift all the participants and volunteers a poker chip
of our own design and then tear down and clean up. It turned out that all of that was easier
explained than organized. For example, we had to hold the 5K on the base installation but our base
was very small. There were no

Judaism s Views On Judaism
JUDAISM
First of all, before I begin with my research on Judaism, I did not consider that the Jews only
believes in God. I thought that they accepted every word from the bible and that even though they
have a Jewish calendar and different practices, that the bible that I use was quite similar with them
with both Old Testament and New Testament. I knew that Judaismwas the one of the oldest
religions in the world that still exists today and was recorded in the bible. I had no indication that
tells me that they observed different traditions and there are different branches of Judaism. I also
thought that Judaism was Christianity. Both believe in God, (monotheism) the only God almighty,
the one who created the universe, and because both shared the Hebrew Scriptures. I also thought
that all Jewish men have beard and lovely hair. I thought that males were black hat and black coat
at all times on Shabbath Other things that I expect was that some of the holidays that Christianity
celebrates, the Jews also celebrates it like Passover, palm Sundays, Easter. Since my religion is
closed to the Judaism faith practices, I thought that they performs a foot washing ceremony before
communion and that they gather on the Sabbath which is Saturday for worship. I also assumed that
not all Jews, but certain Jews kept the kosher. I also thought that all men covered their heads and
during worship or in the temple women were to cover their heads.
What I found out is quite different then

Mass Media Controversy
Mass media, especially social media and the internet, exposes people to ideas and information and
is a powerful vehicle that can be used both positively and negatively. Its role cannot be
underestimated in the influence of current societal attitudes towards eating, body image paradigms
and self esteem.
There is much controversy around mass media creating unrealistic expectations of how we should
look , i.e. the ideal body/appearance , based on what is portrayed in movies, television, videos,
billboards, music, newspapers, fashion designers, health industry, magazines, internet and social
media, where pictures are edited and airbrushed and many female celebrities and models are
underweight and men are lean, strong and muscular.

1984 Class Structure
Humans always have had a tendency to allow the poor and miserable to suffer, even while the
wealthy continue to fatten and flourish in needed yet often unshared resources. The social order
has shaped a distinctive hierarchy composed of the High, the Middle, and the Low in an
exceedingly flawed and callous structure. This system has been implemented in our history over a
variety of ages and civilizations. More importantly, the structure has not been altered to work for
any system except for theoretical Communism and Socialism. The novel 1984 was a shock to the
masses when it was released, but by showing the class structure and political satire Orwell was able
to present not only the danger of Communism gone awry but its repercussions on... Show more

This is remarkably similar to certain viewpoints taken of the United States philosophies on politics
and the class system. According to Phillips, В… the erosion of the U.S. middle class in the 1980s
and early 1990s reflected technological change and global economic upheaval. The Reagan
administration introduced new philosophies, tentative and little understood at first, to justify
policies of redistributing tax burdens, exalting markets, over rewarding the rich and the
manipulations of financeВ… Using the previous example from Kevin Phillips, one can see how
the upper or high class will always attempt to gain more wealth and power, even at the expense of
the common good as well as the majority. The peasants and other low classes have always been
pressed on by their uppers. The Proles make up the majority of the population of Oceania, about
85%. The Party itself is only interested in their labor power, because the Proles are mainly
employed in the industry and in the farms (Gerenser). A society cannot exist without a working
class, and therefore it is the only reason why the Proles are still around. In 1984, Winston begins
to realize that the Proles may have a simpler and easier life than that of the Party. While the Outer

Impact Of Beethoven On The Development Of The Symphony...
Discuss the impact of Beethoven on the development of the symphony until Mahler. Difficult as it
may be to define the true relationship of an artist to his successors, this difficulty is enormously
increased when the subject is as complex a man and musician as Beethoven. His role as both a
preserver of the eighteenth century tradition1 and a pioneer of romantic self expression, has
secured his status as one of the most revered composers in the history of Western music.
Throughout his symphonic cycle, Beethoven s own journey of self discovery can be very clearly
heard. The Third, Fifth, Sixth and Ninth symphonies were particularly pioneering; they used new
ideas such as programme music, orchestral and symphonic expansion and the prolongation of
dissonance, inspiring a new generation of romantic symphonists. However, there is an equally
strong argument, suggesting that musical fashion and history had turned away from Beethoven
towards the end of his life. In the music of his immediate contemporaries, with the exception of
Schubert perhaps, his work hardly played a vital force and it was not until the latter half of the 19th
century that his influence began to dominate the musical scene. Composers such as Brahms and
Bruckner developed the motivic and intrinsically musical ideas in Beethoven s music whilst others
such as Berlioz, Liszt, Mahler and Wagner embraced the extra musical programmatic ideas.
Through an extension of Beethoven s work in both of these strands, his legacy

They felt as though they should be able to use any means necessary to prevent crime and disable
criminal activity. However, there is a huge difference in the priorities of Law Enforcement and the
Judicial system.
The question for the courts was does this follow the rules of evidentiary collection and was the
search performed according to the law? The court decided it was not. The allowance of letting the
police department to make the standards as they go along and to perform their duties by any means
necessary could be problematic. Police brutality, harassment, and other types of inappropriate
behaviors could result from giving an officer a blank check for search and seizures. It also
contributes to an all powerful mentality that leads these people to believe that they are untouchable.
Both members of the public as well as the police force itself must have rules and standards to
protect people on all sides. This ideology allows people to feel comfortable in their jobs and in
their lives. Everyone needs a societal norm that is accepted as commonplace for these situations.

The Role Of Religion In Medieval Japan
Introduction:
The role of tradition within religion in medieval Japanese society was of great significance.
Shinto and Zen Buddhism were two of the major religions practiced in medieval Japan. Shinto
was mainly concerned with daily life, while Zen Buddhism prepared the people for the life to
come. The samurai also followed an important code called Bushido, a form of warrior philosophy.
The ancient Japanese religions helped people understand the universe and also provided a
connection between the physical world on earth and the spiritual world.
Shintoism:
Firstly, the traditions within Shintoism were important to help the Japanese people to connect with
their ancestors and the nature around them. The word Shinto itself means way of the gods. It is as
old as the Japanese culture and was the only religion in Japan until the 6th century. According to
the Shinto religion, there exists a basic life force called kami. Kami are close to human beings
and respond to human prayers. They can influence the course of natural forces, and human
events. Shinto tradition says that there are eight million kami in Japan. Due to their deep respect
and love for nature and Japan itself, many shrines were set up in places of natural beauty.
Followers went to pray here to receive good fortune and samurai would often go to the shrines to
pray for victory before and after battle. Shinto s traditions involved having a clean lifestyle. They
washed and bathed everyday which made most of japan a fresh

  • 3. Lucretius Writing on the Fear of Death Essay At the most basic level of subconscious thought, every living animal possesses a desire to stay alive. Usually, this instinct lays dormant, although in dire situations, we can be led to do unexpected things. In addition to this subconscious drive, there is a socially constructed motivation for fearing death. Thanks to the pervasive nature of religion throughout history, much of humanity has, at some point or another, feared the prospect of eternal damnation and torture during one s life after death. Although not every religion has a negative aspect of the afterlife, or even any semblance of an afterlife at all, those religions which do contain some such construct receive much more attention in this regard. Throughout history, many... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In On the Nature of Things, Lucretius argues that not only is the whole of the human body (both tangible parts, like organs, and intangible concepts, like the soul) created from distinct types of atoms, but that this is the basis upon which an afterlife may be disproved. One of the principle tenets of atomism is that the atoms people are comprised of provide the basis for physical sensations we might experience, such as heat, touch, smell, et cetera. Lucretius provides the corollary to this view by noting that without some mechanism for processing these input data, we would not smell things, or might burn our hands in a fire. This cognition of external stimuli is one of the key functions of the soul atoms which permeate our bodies. The soul, Lucretius says, is comprised of four distinct types of atoms: breath, heat, air, and a fourth, unnamed variety, which is more mobile than the other three (3.231). The presence of these soul atoms can be proved by observing a person s reactions to various ailments; sickness afflicts both the body and the mind, for example, demonstrating that they are intrinsically linked. In addition, because sensation may occur at any point in or on the body, the soul must be distributed completely and evenly throughout oneself. Atomism says that no atoms are ever created or destroyed, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Testing Software quality assurance is a very important part of the software development and installation. The main objective of quality assurance is to avoid problems or to detect them as soon as possible (Shelly, Cashman Rosenblatt, 2003, p. 410). The best case scenario is to have four instances of the system, a testing environment, a user acceptance environment, a production environment, and a training environment. The program can be tested on the testing and user acceptance environments. The initial and most important step of the testing phase is creating the test plan. The test plan should include what features and functionality will be tested based on the confirmed requirements. The next step is unit testing or code review. Unit testing involves the QA person testing the code on their machine. Once code has passed the unit test, it will then be released to the testing environment for system testing. The QA person can then test the integration of the different modules of the code as a program rather than separate parts as well as to find and report bugs and any data inaccuracy. The next phase of testing is the user acceptance test. In this phase the users test the program for functionality and data accuracy. The test phase isn t a linear phase, more of a circular, back and forth between the developers and the QA people. After all phases have passed, the next step would be to open a change ... • 11. The Significance Of Church Going By Phillip Larkin David Doan Kevin Moore 05/21/2015 English 111 The Significance of Church Church Going by Phillip Larkin is a poem which hectors, but also provides an interesting perspective on the significance and purpose of religion. Throughout the poem, one can instantly recognize Larkin s agnostic beliefs because of the story s duel nature. Church Going begins with an obviously atheist narrator ironically sneaking into an empty church. Due to the narrator s ignorant and naГЇve personality, one can infer that the character could be a curious young boy. While looking through all of the fancy decorations, books, and sacred items, he begins to wonder what would happen to churches once people stopped practicing their faith and most of all what the allure of religion is. In the end, the boy concludes that religion will forever exist because there will always be big questions such as why are we here or what is the meaning of life. Although Larkin is very skeptical about religion in his poem, it seems he cannot deny the significance and impact the church has had in history. The church s ability to satisfy humanity s want for a metaphysical entity, is the reason why there are so many followers even today. Larkin first begins his poem by empathizing with atheists and viewing the church through their eyes. When the boy sneaks into the church, one can tell how indifferent and almost disgusted he is towards the building based on his descriptions. He points out how it is just another church: ... Alcohol And Tobacco Use In Disney Movies As a child, I watched several Disney movies over and over, and as I have entered college and taken women s studies classes, I began to start questioning the influences Disney movies may have on children. Without knowing it, we are constantly being sent messages in society, including television and movies, like Disney movies. Disney movies are often shown to children at a young age and almost always, results in children watching these movies over and over. Disney films have several underlying messages that are often unconscious, but exposing children to these messages can lead children making unconscious connections and form stereotypes constructed on the movies they are exposed to. The purpose of this paper is to discuss under what conditions (if any), children should be shown Disney movies. First, I will summarize main points and findings... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These instances expose children to harmful substances in a comical fashion with zero explanations of the harmful effects associated with the drug use. The Disney movies that portray these instances are older, but still, have the potential of being watched several times by children. For instance, Beauty and the Beast had 116 exposures of alcohol in the film and 101 Dalmatians had 21 instances of tobacco use. It is difficult to say that Disney movies lead to children trying alcohol and tobacco, but this is one example where these Disney films should be talked to with kids and explain the harmful effects of the substances children are being exposed to. I remember 101 Dalmatians having a lot of smoking references and wonder if these exposures have any impacts on the decision people make. These films are still important to discuss with children especially if it is an older Disney movie and a lot of alcohol or tobacco exposures occur in a film, so the child can begin to understand the negative consequences of those actions from a younger ... The main argument is the idea that a fetus is considered a person at the moment of conceptrion. since the fetus is considered a person than the has a futuree like ours. The fetus will have plenty of experiences and happinies just like any other being. ( page448) Unlike Marquis, Thomson s famous article defended abortion. Based on her premises, the fetus is a person from the moment of conception. Thomson main argument in the article the right of the fetus life is not absolutely right. Thus, she defended that abortion is morally acceptable in some cases by talking about The violinist experiment , The Burglar and The Case of the People Seeds. Every person has a right to life. So the fetus has a right to life. No dough the mother has a right to decide what shall happen in and to her body; everyone would grant that. But surely a person s right to life is stronger and more stringent than the mother s right to decide what happens in and to her body, and so outweighs it. So the fetus may not be killed; an abortion may not be performed. (Thomson, page438) Thomson talks about true premises. Every person has a right to life and everyone has the right to control their body. A mother has the right to choose what will happen to her body, but a life is more important. • 15. Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence And... Introduction In a study by Mandell and Pherwani (2003), the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and transformational leadership style was examined in order to determine whether EI scores could be used to predict transformational leadership style. In addition, gender differences in the relationship between EI and transformational leadership were examined to determine if there is a significant interaction of gender and emotional intelligence. This research is important, because transformational leadership has been found to be the most effective style of leadership. Therefore, if EI can predict transformational leadership style, it would be useful for organizations to use EI measures in their selection battery for managerial positions and in development of current managers. In the study, transformational leadership was defined as a leadership style that encourages subordinates to look at their work from different viewpoints, motivates employees to promote the organization s mission, and develops employee abilities. Emotional intelligence was defined as an ability that involves self monitoring of one s own feelings and emotions, as well as, monitoring the emotions of others in order to guide one s behaviors and make decisions. Consistent with the previous research, Mandell and Pherwani (2003) found that EI scores do significantly predict transformational leadership style. However, they found no significant relationship between gender and EI while predicting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Justice and Moderation of the Soul in The Republic, by Plato In his philosophical text, The Republic, Plato argues that justice can only be realized by the moderation of the soul, which he claims reflects as the moderation of the city. He engages in a debate, via the persona of Socrates, with Ademantus and Gaucon on the benefit, or lack thereof, for the man who leads a just life. I shall argue that this analogy reflecting the governing of forces in the souland in city serves as a sufficient device in proving that justice is beneficial to those who believe in, and practice it. These conflicting desires cause unhappiness. Glaucon sees the issue from the perspective of personal gain or loss, while Plato sees it from outside that realm in the sphere of absolute truths. Clearly, an absolute truth is more viable and defensible than a personal interest. Justice is a higher order than personal advantage and as is associated with happiness whether one receives a reward for justice or not. The argument Glaucon raises against the absolutism of justice is exemplified in his story of the man who discovers a gold ring that allows him to become invisible. Glaucon proposes these two representative men as extreme examples of the two sides of the argument and suggests that their positions be examined after their death to see which was happier, based on the premise that the unjust man meted out injustice at will without ever suffering it himself, while the just man acted only justly but was treated unjustly himself. Glaucon takes this example to the extreme, with the just man being: whipped...racked...bound; he ll have both his eyes burned out; and at the end, when he has undergone every sort of evil, he ll be crucified and know that one shouldn t wish to be, but to seem to be, just (39). The atria is contracting causing the depolarization wave to move through the cells of the AV node then down the Purkinje fibers to the apex of the heart. Ventricular systole begins as the muscle squeezes the bloodtoward the base. The blood being pushed along the AV valves cause them to close. I will also discuss the different methods for calculating depreciation and the effects on accounts if depreciation is not accounted for. In this report, I will be giving examples of fixed assets that are common to the construction industry and also give examples of how depreciation is calculated. What is Depreciation? Depreciation is the reduction in the value of certain fixed assets. It is a periodic reduction of fixed assets, usually done every year. Fixed assets are assets that add value to the company. Examples of fixed assets that can be depreciated are vehicles, buildings, machinery, equipment and fixture and fittings. The only fixed asset that is not depreciated is land, because it is not worn out overtime, unless natural resources are being exploited. When a company buys a new fixed asset it doesn t account for the full cost of it as one single large expense, instead the expense is spread over the life time of the asset. Traditionally, B2C versus B2B was often defined as business marketers being more sensitive to price, customer loyalty and working business relationships while B2C marketers tried to create excitement for their products through emotional connections. • 39. The Influence Of Beauty During The Heian Era This period of Japanese history is notable by its visual impact. During the Heien era women had the most influence upon the social aesthetics of society at the time. They dictated what was beautiful in all things, including poetry, wardrobe, the arrangement of their homes and gardens. Such a profound influence has continued to be important within Japan today, as many of the Heian precepts of beauty are still considered the height of society today. Beauty, in all things, was considered of utmost importance: in language, the written word, the spoken word, the costume, gardens, and in the very essence of the culture. Mono no aware, a term coined in the 19th century by Motoori Norinaga in regards to the Heian concept of beauty, best describes the Heian thoughts of beauty. Beauty is precious, because it is brief (Hooker, 1999). The term aware during the Heian era represented sensitivity to things ranging from beauty to sadness, life, love or death. In the letters, diaries, literature and poetry, the fashion stands out and is the most obvious and most scrutinized aspect of Heian beauty personified. While the men, too, had splendid robes to wear, their color options and individuality was constrained by the sumptuary laws and their rank (Bryant, 2004). However, the women wore juni hitoe (called karaginu mo, with formal court layers, which allowed a huge canvas upon which to express their individuality and fashion sense. In a democratic society, it is generally considered the Government s role to promote morality and justice within its citizens and seek to restrict supposedly immoral and unjust acts. Thus if an act is to be considered immoral, it seems obvious to suggest that the government is justified in restricting it regardless of whether it is harmful to others. However, since everybody has a different understanding of morality and freedom, no Government could legitimately restrict an act on the basis of it being immoral . While this notion may be agreeable to some, it s difficult to justify given Mill s other beliefs surrounding harm. There are many acts which may be accepted in public by some and not others, for many there is little wrong with homosexuality being exhibited in public, but for others even the mere thought of it being practised in private causes them great distress. Although it s not obvious where the line should be drawn in terms of public indecency, it seems obvious that everybody has a limit as highlighted by Joel Feinberg (offence to others). Feinberg used a thought experiment concerning a ride on a bus in which the people around you begin to perform slowly more intolerable acts beginning with mere horrible smells and concluding with sexual acts being performed on an animal. This demonstrates that if we wish to accept making sex acts with an animal on a bus illegal, we may not be able to argue for it without also legitimising a restriction on other more mundane acts of public indecency such as picking your nose. • 56. Impact Of Beethoven On The Development Of The Symphony... Discuss the impact of Beethoven on the development of the symphony until Mahler. Difficult as it may be to define the true relationship of an artist to his successors, this difficulty is enormously increased when the subject is as complex a man and musician as Beethoven. His role as both a preserver of the eighteenth century tradition1 and a pioneer of romantic self expression, has secured his status as one of the most revered composers in the history of Western music. Throughout his symphonic cycle, Beethoven s own journey of self discovery can be very clearly heard. The Third, Fifth, Sixth and Ninth symphonies were particularly pioneering; they used new ideas such as programme music, orchestral and symphonic expansion and the prolongation of dissonance, inspiring a new generation of romantic symphonists. However, there is an equally strong argument, suggesting that musical fashion and history had turned away from Beethoven towards the end of his life. In the music of his immediate contemporaries, with the exception of Schubert perhaps, his work hardly played a vital force and it was not until the latter half of the 19th century that his influence began to dominate the musical scene. Composers such as Brahms and Bruckner developed the motivic and intrinsically musical ideas in Beethoven s music whilst others such as Berlioz, Liszt, Mahler and Wagner embraced the extra musical programmatic ideas.
