1820 Susan B. Anthony
February 15 is an important date in my life, but not only for my life for the lives of others who
were also born on this day. Even with the events that happen on this date they are still considered
life changers. For some of us or maybe even all of us our birth was considered the best day of our
life. Of course without that we wouldn t be here. There are going to be things in life that we are
going to be remembered for. There are also going to be impacts that happened to shape the world.
This date to me not only is my birthday, but this is the date that a major change to the world was
made.

Another big event would be when the USS Maine was supposedly blown up. During that time
America was trying to be at peace with Spain without having any more ships invaded. Due to the
explosion America decided that Spain was involved and that there should be a war. This is what
caused the Spanish American War. The US was in the process of trying to form a treaty

with Spain to keep peace. The treaty was signed, but the information about the ship being bombed
was false information. This event was a mistaken event that leads to chaos.
On February, 15, 1933 there was a change in how the states handled the penalty of life and death.
In the beginning the states would consider the death penalty of the murderers. This penalty
included the electric chair, the gas chamber, hanging, a firing squad or even a lethal injection. The
whole problem with the death penalty was the way that the system chose to carry out the decision.
Some people had to wait a long time in order to have another chance in court.
Some people argued that maybe that should be changed and only consider the murderers only for a
life sentence. This event was a major issue and it changed how the penalty worked and

Example Of Exothermic Reaction
An exothermic reaction is one in which there is a release of energy (usually heat) from the system
(Ashworth Little, 2001). In other words, the energy of the system decreases, and thus H is negative.
Because heat is being transferred out of the system (i.e., the reaction requires no external energy
source), exothermic reactions are self sustaining (Ashworth Little, 2001). Notable examples of
exothermic reactions include combustionreactions, where oxygen(O2) reacts with another
substance, usually to form carbon dioxide and water (CO2 + H2O) (Kung Lerner, 2014).
Combustion can be seen in many facets of everyday life, from wood fires to the engines of many
vehicles (the combustion of gasoline has the following chemical equation: 2C8H18 + 25O2 +
2N2 12CO2 + 4CO + 4NO + 18H2O + heat this illustrates the convention of placing heat in a
chemical equation, which, if listed as a product, is an indicator of an exothermic reaction; this
equation is also an example of incomplete combustion, since an ideal combustion reaction would
have no products save carbon dioxide and water; often, the oxygen fueling a combustion reaction
is consumed before complete combustion can occur (Lew, 2015)). On a smaller scale, exothermic
reactions can be used to create heating devices such as hand warmers, which can be calibrated (by
analyzing the change in heat of the chemicals involved in the device) to produce an optimal amount
of heat. [SOME MORE] Endothermic reactions, conversely, are

Stephen King Why We Crave Horror Movies Summary
Horror Movies: An Outlet for Insanity We are all insane. Thus, man is evil. Stephen King
declares this belief in his essay Why We Crave Horror Movies , adding his opinion to the
extensive debate on the nature of humankind. Those who believe man is evil are also unable to
deny their own corruption. Therefore, in order to move on from this distress, they come to accept
this apparently inevitable characteristic of humanity. As long as they confine their hidden desires
with seemingly ordinary activities, such as watching horror movies, the frontier that distinguishes
what society deems as acceptable will remain uncrossed. In fact, King himself has gained
tremendous success by taking advantage of the enjoyment he receives from horror stories and
creating a career out of it; he became successful by indulging in his corrupt fantasies. However, I
disagree with King. I do not believe that man is purely evil as insanity is too subjective to be an

He believes everyone is insane, making sanity only a matter of degree (Paragraph 8). In society,
identifying what stands out, what is too unique, is an easy task. Those who are extremely
different from the majority s norms and values cannot be welcomed into society; instead, they
are isolated in asylums and prisons. On the other hand, the boundaries of sanity is not as clear.
We do not identify those who fit well into society as extremely normal . If we are asked to define
what normal is, we reply with synonyms, base the definition off of abnormality, or identify the
ordinary as something widely accepted. However, if an insane person is surrounded by other
mentally ill individuals, is he/she no longer insane? This issue then becomes an example of
philosophical thought experiments, similar to the question: If a tree falls in the forest and no one

Texas Supreme Court Case Analysis
Texas consists of three branches of government; the executive, legislative, and judicial branch.
Texas government is modeled very similarly to The United States three branches. Specifically
within the judicial branch, there is a Supreme Court, which is the highest federal court of The
United States [National]. There is also a Supreme Court in Texas; which is the highest court in the
state. A 5 4 decision by The United StatesSupreme Court on June 26th, 2015 ended all state bans
on same sex marriage and requires all fifty states to recognize marriages legally performed in
other states. Immediately after this historic decision was made, in disobedience of the Supreme
Court, Texas attorney general said, that county clerks can refuse to issue marriage licenses to
same sex couples if they object on religious grounds. This was Texas initial reaction to the ruling.
Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a presidential contender, said he was disappointed with the ruling
and as president, I would appoint strict constitutional conservatives who will apply the law as
written.
The issue here is that states such as Texas feel as if The Supreme court has... Show more content on

Diversity In The Workplace. . Diversity In The Workplace
Diversity in the Workplace Diversity in the workplace is imperative even though some
commentators argue that too much diversity can be negative.
Diversity can lead to staff feeling threatened or even annoyed by persons with views and
backgrounds different from their own (Barsoux, Strebel and Manzoni, 2010). Instead of inclusivity,
diversity can end up causing conflicts, as some staff are reluctant in changing their viewpoints and
are less adaptable to change.
The discourse relating to diversity also applies to senior high skilled professionals. As there has
been various discussion over the years to introduce quotas at board level, to assist those from
underrepresented backgrounds. If individuals are selected to become directors based ... Show more

Trying to exclude diverse people from the workforce will essentially exclude them from society,
which is not only regressive and divisive but it would send the economy into turmoil as a result of
how diverse the UK is.
Besides, a lack of diversity will lead to less innovative strategies as different individuals from
different backgrounds wield different experiences and viewpoints. It is argued that If an
organization does not leverage the potent weapon of diversity, it risks limiting its creative potential
and ultimately losing its competitive edge (Ey.com, 2017).
To ensure that diversity is not undermined in the workplace the Equality Act was enacted. The
Equality Act, prohibits positive discrimination, but it does allow for positive action. Positive action
is when an employer takes steps to help or encourage certain groups of people with different
needs, or who are disadvantaged in some way, access work of training (citizensadvice.org.uk,
2017). Positive action is quite beneficial as it enables marginalised groups access to employment, in
which they historically did not have access too.
The Equality Act prohibits direct and indirect discrimination and harassment and victimisation to
individuals with a protected characteristic. The protected characteristics are age, disability, sex,
sexual orientation,

President Gerald R. Ford
Introduction
Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr. was the 38th President of the United States. Born in Omaha, Nebraska,
Ford went from being a son of divorcees to the leader of a nation.
Childhood
Gerald Ford was born on July 14th, 1913 in Omaha, Nebraska. His birth name was Leslie Lynch
King Jr., after his father. Ford s mother, Dorothy Ayer Gardner King, left King roughly two weeks
after his birth. Oddly enough, Ford did not know about his biological father until he was 17.
Dorothy then moved with her son to Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1916, she married a paint
salesman named Gerald Rudolph Ford, who adopted her son. Leslie Lynch King Jr. was then

Ford did not die an unaccomplished man. Even in his early years, the man achieved many things. In
high school, Ford was a member of the honor society and both the All City and All State football
teams. Even before his presidency, the man was involved in politics. This started in 1940, when
he participated in Wendell Willkie s presidential campaign. Later, Ford and fraternity brother
from the University of Michigan, Philip A. Buchen, set up a law partnership in the place he
grew up: Grand Rapids, Michigan. During World War II, Ford joined the Navy, serving in the
South Pacific and holding the rank of lieutenant commander. In 1948, Ford became a member of
Congress, which he was a part of for 25 years. Later on, in 1965, he served the role of House
minority leader. Even after his presidency, Ford was active in politics. He went to hundreds of
colleges and universities to speak about issues such as foreign policy, Congressional relations,
and federal budget policies. In 1979, Ford released a memoir called A Time to Heal: The
Autobiography of Gerald R. Ford. In 1981, the Gerald R. Ford Library and the Gerald R. Ford
Museum were dedicated. Ford went to conferences at both of these places and would discuss
various political subjects such as German reunification, relations with the Soviet Union, and
national security. One year later, Ford established the AEI World Forum. This was a gathering of
prominent world leaders and business executives to discuss issues impacted by political and

The Effect of Divorce on Parent and Child Essay
Divorce is a plague that is destroying numerous families across the United States of America.
Sadly, when husbands and wives divorce, the children are often caught directly in the middle.
Throughout the years divorce has been becoming more and more common. In the 1920 s it was a
rare find to know a person whom had been divorced, today it is a rarity not to know of one who has
been, or will be divorced. Divorcehas numerous effects on the structures of families, and many
devastating effects on the children that must experience it, although sometimes necessary, divorce
radically changes the lives of adolescents and adults alike.

Sometimes divorce may be the only way to solve the various problems a family may have.
Custody
When parents become divorced there are many decisions that they must come to an agreement
upon. How will are possessions be divided? and What will happen to the children? are often the
most asked questions when divorce occurs. Custody is almost always the largest battle when
husband and wife become divorced. Custody includes all duties a parent owes a child including,
food, shelter, protection discipline, education, and even a child s religious beliefs (Martin 32).
Often, a judge must make custody decisions for the parents. There are several types of custody, but
the most common are sole custody, joint legal custody, and joint physical custody.
In sole custody, a single parent provides shelter and makes all important decisions for the child. In
joint legal custody, the child lives with a single parent but decisions are agreed upon by both.
Finally, in joint physical custody the child lives with each parent for equal periods of time and
important decisions may be made by either one, or both parents (Furstenberg 32).
Sole custody children often live with the custodial parent for two week periods and live with the
non custodial parent for two day time periods (Wolchik 164). This gives the child a stable home to
live in while also allowing the child to have a relationship with both parents. Of all different types

Persuasive Speech On Domestic Violence
ONE STEP TOWARDS JUSTICE:
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Right now, right at this very instant, a silent war all across the nation is being waged. A violation
of humanity, a crime that is least prosecuted, and a great threat endangering the lives of thousands
of women and children daily. Of course, I am talking about harsh reality of domestic violence. We
live in a time where domestic violence is kept a taboo subject, a shameful secret that shouldn t be
let out. We know it s happening, and even hear or see the events. But who s taking action?
I can stand here and give you a list of statistics about this issue, but is that all it is? A statistic?
Sadly enough, people look at this endless crime as just a figure or percentage, we re shocked at
first but nothing more. So today, I am taking the first step, a step towards justice, a step to end the
struggle, and a step to save our nation.
And yes, I m not anyone special, I don t study the topic, nor am I a survivor of domestic violence
myself. But I m here to tell a story. I m here to make a change. And I m here to encourage all of
you to do the same.
I m going to share an experience I had. Something that I ve regretted and hated myself for since,
knowing that help could ve been sought earlier. A few years back, I was catching up with a
family member and noticed a faint bruise on her face. Naturally, I asked her what had happened
but she just brushed it off, told me it was nothing but a sport injury. Weeks progressed, and the
bruises became worse and worse, but I stop questioning. To me, she still seemed the happy go
lucky girl I knew and loved, the only difference were these markings. But let me tell you,
sometimes the people who seem happiest, are actually hurting the most. And this was exactly the
case. Flashforward a few months, and her partner was being trialled and charged under the case of
domestic abuse.
Although there were so many signs, my ignorance restrained me from helping her help herself.
Needless to say, I was absolutely disgusted. And to this day, I still can t even begin the fathom how
anyone could possibly put their hands on someone they loved. To purposely harm their significant
other and act like everything is fine. And to the victims who have to live

Chronic Acalculous Cholecystitis
When a patient comes with abdominal pain, it can be due to different causes. The pain may be
visceral, somatoparietal or referred pain as an indicator of a wide variety of systemic and local
causes. Visceral pain is from abdominal distention or stretching of the muscle fibers, carried by
sympathetic nerve fibers, presents as dull, poorly localized painin the mid areas of the abdomen.
Somatic pain occurs once the parietal peritoneum is inflamed or irritated, and passed by sensory
fibers. Somatic pain is better defined and more localized, high intensity, and also associated with
tenderness and spasm of the localized muscle groups.

Financial Crisis And Its Effects On Financial Institutions
The recent financial crisis has a huge impact on systemic Important Financial Institutions; it s
distressing effect can be felt in almost every business area and process of a bank. A fairly large
literature investigates the impact of financial crisis on large, complex and interconnected banks.
The great recession did affect banks in different ways, depending on the funding capability of each
bank. Kapan and Minoiu (2013) find that banks that were ex ante more dependent on market
funding and had lower structural liquidity reduced supply of credit more than other banks during
crisis. The ability of banks to generate interest income during the financial crisiswas hampered

Recent studies have investigated the impact of the 2007 2009 financial crises on banks capital.
Berger and Bouwman (2011) emphasised the importance of capital during financial crisis. Their
empirical study concludes that banks with solid capital base have some benefits during the
crisis than those that are poorly capitalised. Well capitalised banks are more able to withstand the
shocks due to liquidity squeeze, and therefore had higher chances of surviving the crisis period.
Other benefits accrued to well capitalised banks include increase in their market share and
profitability, as customers withdrew their funds from less capitalised to a well capitalised banks.
This conclusion was also reinforced by a recent empirical study conducted Olivier de Bandt et al
(2014) on a sample of large French banks over a period of 1993 2012. Similarly, Gambacorta and
Marques Ibanez (2011) demonstrate the existence of structural changes during the period of
financial crisis. They conclude that banks with weaker core capital positions, greater dependence
on market funding and on non interest sources of income restricted the loan supply more strongly
during the crisis period. Using a multi country panel of banks, DemirgГјГ§ Kunt, Detragiache and

Invictus is a movie based on the real life story of how Nelson Mandela united the country of
South Africa through the sport of rugby. To give some background, before Nelson Mandela
became the first black president of South Africa (which made his presidency very historic), he had
been a prisoner on Robben Island for almost 30 years while South Africawas under the cruel
regime of Apartheid. Apartheid was introduced in 1948 by the white National Party government to
make segregation between whites and blacks legal. The non white majority of the population was

de Klerk. When Mandela was elected president, he inherited a country that was still pretty fresh
out of 50 years of Apartheid rule. Attitudes by whites and blacks don t change overnight just
because there is a new president. There was huge racial tensions and rampant poverty to deal
with. Crime rates were also high. Mandela was very concerned about violence erupting between
whites and non whites. Rather than live with bitterness and resentment over his imprisonment
and the terrible treatment of the black population, Mandela chose the route of forgiveness and
looked for a way to bring the country back together. Sport can be enjoyed by all parts of the
population whether rich or poor, black or white, educated or not. When Mandela publicly
supported the mostly white Springbok rugby team, as a black president, he was leading by
example. What he did was completely unexpected both in the eyes of whites and non whites. He
gained the trust of whites and helped blacks see that the only way to move forward in a positive
way was to forgive the sins of the past and work for reconciliation. When the black President came
out on the field for the World Cup final wearing the Springbok jersey in front of a mostly white
crowd (and in front of the world via TV) he put South Africa on a journey that would change the
country forever. He demonstrated that

Lab Report Determination Of Empirical Formula Of Magnesium...
Andrea Jais
AP Chemistry
Mrs. Wright
Block 2
The Determination of the Chemical Formula of Magnesium Oxide Conclusion The purpose of this
lab was to find the empirical formula of magnesium oxide. The empirical formula of a compound is
the simplest formula based on the number of different atoms in that compound. In this lab, the
student burned magnesium, in the form of a ribbon, which bonded with oxygen to form magnesium
oxide. The mass of oxygen was calculated by subtracting the mass of the magnesium ribbon from
the mass of the magnesium mass. The masses of magnesium and oxygen were converted into
moles, which was used in the calculation of the empirical formula. The mass of the magnesium
oxide was determined by subtracting the combined mass ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net
...
This is due to the fact that our hands have oils and dirt that could have unintentionally increased
the mass of the magnesium oxide. As a result, the mass of the oxygen would be higher than its
actual mass, which would displace the mole ratio. If a student allowed a significant amount of
white smoke to escape while heating the magnesium, this would affect the moles of oxygen.
The white smoke is gaseous magnesium oxygen, which contributes to the final mass of
magnesium oxide. If the smoke escapes, the total mass of magnesium oxide will be smaller,
which in turn will result in a smaller mass of oxygen and smaller number of oxygen moles. The
tarnished material that was removed from the magnesium ribbon was oxide. The oxygen in the
air reacts with the magnesium and coats the ribbon with the oxide. If a student fails to remove
the oxide, it would affect the calculated number of moles of magnesium and oxygen and the mole
ratio. The extra oxide would add to the total mass of magnesium oxide, which would result in a
larger mole number for oxygen. The oxide also adds extra mass to the magnesium ribbon, which
results in a larger mass and mole number for magnesium. Since both mole numbers for the
elements are affected, the calculated mole ratio would also be inaccurate. If a student never added
water to the crucible, the number of moles for oxygen will be affected. This is due to the fact that
some of the magnesium will react with the nitrogen in the air to form magnesium nitride. This will
add to the mass of magnesium oxide and in turn increase the number of oxygen moles. If the
experiment were repeated with twice the amount of magnesium, theoretically the empirical formula
should not change. However, the empirical formula could change if the lab was performed under
different

Descriptive Essay On The Day In The House
November air wisped past my ivory skin as I strolled through the neighborhood. I stepped off of
the cracked sidewalk so I could turn on to the next street, but a seven foot tall metal pole with an
octagon challenged me at the sharp corner. The top of the vibrant red sign had an emerald
rectangle attached to it that read S BARWICK PL in white text with the same colored border.
The word STOP that was written in the middle of the geometric shape was meant for passing
cars, felt like it was meant for me as if I needed to head somewhere rather than home. Thinking
about if I should turn left on to Barwick or turn towards the dead end, my feet moved without my
brain telling them to. In the opposite direction of home, there was a strip of woods that was

With every soft step as I approached the leaf filled ditch, my low top Converse kissed the road s

prickle of thorns. I was hypnotised by peaceful nature surrounding me. Blissful serenity was soon
interrupted by a breeze that tousled my hair and nipped at the high points of my face. Chilled air
climbed through my jacket to the bottom of my spine. The warmth that had been in the wind just

The Importance Of Organizational Structure In The British...
Structure According to Drucker (1989), is the correct design of structure which is of most
significance in determining organizational performance
Drucker , (1989), p.223 goes on to state that Good organization structure does not by itself produce
good performance. But a poor organization structure makes good performance impossible, no
matter how good the individual managers may be. To improve organization structure... will
therefore always improve performance .
The command structure in the British Army is important because it is made up of divisions and
brigades responsible for the administration of smaller groupings, and it is hierarchical and
geographical or regional structure. A regiment or a battalion are the major units with smaller units
being smaller either enterprise size subunits or platoons. All units within the service are either
regular (full time) or armed (partial time), or a combination of subunits of each type .
(www.Army.co.uk). The productivity and economic efficiency is affecting the structure of an
organisation, but also the job satisfaction and morale of the workforce. In organisational change
the first step is getting the right structure.(Heller, R. 1997) A major report on the quality of

Parent Trap Analysis
In her article, Parent Trap: Are False Abuse Charges a Common Tactic in Child Custody Battles?
, Cathy Young addresses the issue of child custody disputes in relation to the gender wars. She
begins with laying out the two differing views of false abuse cases: feminism versus father s
rights activists. Young states that, Both sides in this controversy the feminists and the fathers
advocates see wrongdoing, arrogance, and abuse of power by the courts and the social welfare
agencies... Although there seems to be no good alternative to government power in these cases,
public scrutiny can be a check on the judges and social workers. But if this scrutiny is based on

Sociologists analyze and interpret social phenomena at different levels and from different
perspectives. Sociologists study everything from specific behaviors on the micro level to
generalized, big pictures on the macro level. Each palpable explanation and theoretical
generalization of society and social behavior that sociologists provide, contribute to the
understanding of complex behaviors we demonstrate everyday. Pioneering sociologists introduced a
broad conceptualization of the fundamentals of society. These views are now the basis of which
today s theoretical perspectives are formed. (Contributors at CliffsNotes, 2016) A theoretical

Functionalist Perspective According to the Functionalist Perspective, also known as functionalism,
each aspect of society is interdependent and the parts its people have in it all contribute to society s
functioning as a whole. Largely based on the works of Herbert Spencer, Emile Durkheim, Talcott
Parsons, and Robert Merton, functionalism states that society is a system of interconnected parts
that rely on each other to maintain balance and social equilibrium. Functionalism emphasizes the
interconnectedness of society by focusing on the relationships and influences present in each part
of society. Terms as functional and dysfunctional are often used by sociologists focusing on
functionalism. Elements are said to be functional if they contribute to social stability and
dysfunctional if they break the pattern of stability. (Crossman, 2017) Functionalists are described to
defend the status quo, avoid social change, and believe people cooperate to effect social order.
Functionalism addresses society as a whole by standards of norms, customs, traditions, and
institutions. While once criticized for failure to account for social change and ignoring systematic
inequalities that naturally produce tension and conflict. The functionalist theory easily allows for
specific macro analyses of more contentious power imbalances while also permitting a

Culture Of Afric Africa
CULTURE OF AFRICA
INTRODUCTION The incomprehensible mainland of Africa is so rich and different in its society
with it transforming beginning with one of the nation then coming the next one as well as inside an
individual nation numerous diverse societies might be found. Much of Africa s social action
focuses on the family and the ethnic gathering. Symbolization, music, and oral writing serve to
fortify existing religious and social examples. The Westernized minority, impacted by European
society and Christianity, initially dismisses African conventional society, yet with the ascent of
African patriotism, social recovery happened. The legislatures of most African countries encourage
national move and music gatherings, storehouses, and to a lesser degree, craftsmen and journalists.
Africa was the origination of the human species between 8 million and 5 million years prior.
Today, the larger part of its tenants is of the indigenous cause. Individuals over the mainland are
strikingly assorted by pretty much any measure: They talk an inconceivable number of diverse
dialects, polish several unique religions, live in an assortment of sorts of abodes, and accept piece
in a different variety of financial actions. Through the hundreds of years, person s groups from

Should Huckleberry Finn Be Taught In Schools
The novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is one of the most controversial
novels written in American literature. Multiple different people have disagreed about this novel
and whether it should be allowed to be taught in school or banned since the late 1980s. The
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a valuable novel and should be included in high school

Twain s style of writing, and it addresses the topic of race. The novel was written when slavery

Alexander the Great earned his title. He conquered all of the known world with amazing
strategies and won when he was often out numbered. He had one of the most perfectly
organized, trained and equipped armies of all times. He inherited the army at the age of 20,
when his father was assassinated. His army was usually around 40,000 men and consisted of
phalanx, cavalry, hoplites, and peltasts. Phalanx were the most threatening troops of Alexander s
army. They were blocks of men, 16 across and 16 deep. They had long spears eighteen feet long
called sarissa. They also had a small shield strapped to their shoulders. Calvary are armored men

One battle that shows his amazing strategies is the battle of Gaugamela. It was Darius the
Persian king with about 250,000 men against Alexander the Great with about 45,000. Darius had
his men in a line that stretched about 2.5 miles long. First the Phalanx on the left side moved
away from the center and turned out from battle expecting a side attack. Alexander knew that this
would confuse the enemy and get the enemies cavalry to charge into the open space. Darius sent
his scythed chariots (blades on wheels) out to attack. Alexander knew what to do, the phalanx
went into a U formation to trap and destroy the chariots. Then he turned the calvary to the right
and the Persian cavalry followed. Little did the Persians know peltasts were hiding behind
Alexander s cavalry. Alexander kept going to the right forcing Darius to pull his cavalry out of
the line to avoid being flanked. This opened a gap in the middle of the line. Alexander turned the
cavalry and went for the gap. The peltasts kept the Persian horsemen from following Alexander and
his cavalry. When Alexander made it to the fleeing Darius he

Introduction of Marijuana
INTRODUCTION OF MARIJUANA INTO THE UNITED STATES The use of marijuana has been
an active past time for thousands of years, however, it did not reach the United States until around
1912. A wave of Mexican immigrants was entering the country in the effort to find work; with them
came marijuana. The use of marijuana was a normal custom among the Mexican people, but the
White Americans in towns bordering Mexico saw the use of this particular plant in a different light.
Fueled with racism and frustration associated with the lack of work for the American people,
whites proclaimed that the smoking of marijuana gave the Mexicans super human strength and
transformed those who smoked it into violent murderers. With the increase in rumors... Show more

Through this extremely misleading form of legislation, the Department of Treasury effectively

Sylvia Plath Metaphors
Metaphors by Sylvia Plath was written in 1959. It is a lyric poem that uses metaphors to create a
riddle, as she states in line one. Plath is using a narrator voice in her poetry to describe her
pregnancy with the use of metaphors and her ambivalence to her current state. The narrator is
mocking herself and I find her mocking tone to pregnancy as something I want to incorporate in my
writing when writing about my character s eating disorder.
The poem starts with the narrator announcing herself as a riddle in nine syllables. The nine
syllables is the first hint that the poem is going to be about pregnancy. Plath correlated the use
of the word nine to the length of a pregnancy, giving the reader an inkling of what is to be
expected of the poem. The narrator then goes on to describe herself as an elephant, then a house,
two very distinctively large objects. She is now mocking the weight gain caused by pregnancy
and she furthers this by comparing herself to a melon, strolling on two tendrils. These lines give
the reader a vivid imagery of someone that has become stout and is struggling to do normal tasks
such as walk. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the poem she uses vivid imagery to convey the feelings of emotional suicide. The poem begins
with an answer to the question why do you want to die? she answers this question by starting the
poem with since you ask and takes the reader through a journey where the final destination is
committing suicide. In her poetry, she does not use the voice of the narrator like the way Plath
does, instead it is more of a conversational piece. Her poetry is confessional and written in her
point of view, whereas with Plath s poems I ve mentioned before, there is a disconnect where the
reader reads it in the voice of the narrator, instead of Plath s voice. In the poem, she notes that her

Rhetorical Devices In The Crisis No 1 Thomas Paine
In 1776, an important event was happening in the United States, the Revolutionary war. The
thirteen colonies wanted to break away from Britain s rule, however the chances of winning
were very slim. For this reason, 1/3 of the citizens were for a revolution, 1/3 of the citizens were
against it, and 1/3 of them were undecided. Thomas Paine realized that to become a free and

wrote The Crisis No. 1 to increase the morale of the people, so that they would fight against
Britain in the war. In The Crisis No. 1 Thomas Paine effectively used rhetorical devices to convince
people to fight in the revolutionary war. Thomas Paine begins by alluding to the Declaratory

Factors Affecting Human Development During Phases Of...
The process of nondisjunction can occur in human development during phases in meiosis and
mitosis. The irregularity results in an abnormal amount of chromosomes in the produced cells and
causes alterations in those who are affected. Nondisjunctional consequences can be seen in these
five examples of genetic inheritance conditions discussed in this paper: Down syndrome, Patau s

As a result, there are an extra amount or not enough sets of chromosomes in the cells created which
causes disorders in those affected. The effects of nondisjunction include the following diseases:
Down syndrome, Patau s syndrome, Edward s syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, and Turner s
syndrome. Mendelian and non Mendelian inheritance patterns determine how certain traits are
passed on to the next generation. Mendelian patterns are autosomal dominant inheritance, which
causes Marfan syndrome and Huntington disease, and autosomal recessive inheritance, which
causes cystic fibrosis and sickle cell disease. Non Mendelian patterns of inheritance include
polygenic and mitochondrial inheritance. Polygenic inheritance is seen in the inheritance of traits
like skin color and height and can cause heart diseases and cancer. In mitochondrial inheritance,
also known as maternal inheritance, DNA in the mitochondria is passed down primarily from the
mother. This form of inheritance causes some disorders like Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy
and Kearns Sayre syndrome may occur. Epigenetic inheritance is an unusual process in which
epigenetic tags created by a parent s experience can be passed on to their offspring.
Nondisjunction describes the process in which the chromosomes of a cell do not divide in the
correct manner during meiosis and mitosis. The abnormality occur in one of three ways due to the

Comparison Between Night And Fog
In 1956, just a few years after the Holocaust came to an end, director Alain Resnais released the
documentary Nuit Et Brouillard meaning Night and Fog. The film is presented in both color and
black and white, and is narrated in French by Michael Bouquet. In the film, the abandoned grounds
of Nazi concentration camps Auschwitz and Majdanek are pictured. As images of the camps are
shown, the narrator describes one of the most devastating historical events in detail. Each element
of the film come together to create an incredibly raw and evocative portrayal of the atrocities that
occurred during the Holocaust. The director of Night and Fog, Alan Resnais, had a great interest in
creating films that were concerned with war. This interest may be due in part to his own
involvement in the armed forces when he was a young adult. This particular piece of his work was
extremely successful, and it is considered by many to be the most important film addressing the
Holocaust. When compared to most work centered around the Holocaust, Night and Fog is an
incredibly honest depiction of the atrocities that occurred.
Many creative elements that contribute to the overall impact of the film are incorporated in Night
and Fog. Present day images of the abandoned concentration camp grounds are shown in color,
whereas flashbacks of the camps during the Holocaust are shown in black and white. As the images
are shown the film is being narrated in French by Michael Bouquet. He maintains a dark and

The Benefits of a Liberal Arts Education
The strength of a liberal arts education is the strong, varied foundation it provides over a wide
spectrum of subjects. A liberal arts education is aimed at teaching you how to think. It helps you
to develop strength of mind, and an ordered intellect. This broad based education allows students
to create new theories, discoveries, and connections between fields. With such expansive roots,
great innovators can build and expand from what others have learned, instead of wasting effort
on rediscovery of what is already known. With the knowledge of a subject s strengths and
capabilities, and weaknesses and restrictions, students can combine traits of different subjects to
formulate new and more complicated concepts. New colors can only come from mixing those
which already exist. The pigment of a new color depends on the shades and hues of the colors
used to create it. Such is true for education. The resulting ideas are a sterling product of the
compatibility of the subjects blended to create it. What vocational schools have in central focus,
they lose in direct focus. Enormous concentration in one area pigeon holes, severely limiting the
range of career opportunities. A liberal artseducation on the other hand, teaches one how to think,
and how to apply this to a variety of subjects. Both aspects have their strengths and their downfalls.
However, one can hardly say the liberal arts is useless and should be tossed aside in the modern
day. A better understanding of education comes

The Novel The Handmaid s Tale
The effect of words, powerless and innocent as they are, depending on the one who combines
them can have good and evil outcomes. In the hands of Margaret Atwood, she used her
knowledge and different interpretation of words in her dystopian novel The Handmaid s Tale
in a very indirect and devious way making her novel a treasure hunt in search of these key words
for the understanding of the novel. The novel takes place in Gilead, a very dark future of the
United States, governed by a theocratic government which oppresses women by making them
handmaids in the name of religion to cure the infertility of the population. The double entendre
diction which exists throughout the whole novel adds subliminal hints on the charactarisation of
the characters, such as Offred, and to the story itself, such as the religious political system that
governs Gilead, which is a double entendre in itself. These different plays on diction proves the
oppression of our main character and proves how powerful language can be. The main character
of this novel, Offred, proves to be very analytical in her thoughts in various instances in the novel
but the reader can t understand the complete meaning of this. For example, when Offred was
talking about her daily routine after getting up from bed and sitting in the chair and think about
the word char. It can also mean the leader of a meeting. It can also mean a mode of execution. It is

Summary Of Bertrand Russell s The Conquest Of Happiness
Bertrand Russell was a British philosopher and mathematician throughout the late 19th and 20th
centuries. He wrote in many philosophical areas, including epistemology, ethics, and metaphysics,
with some of his most notable works being Theory of Knowledge, Why I m Not a Christian, and In
Praise of Idleness. He also worked with mathematics and logic, penning Principia Mathematicaand
Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950
for various pieces of writing he had published. He was also very openly pacifist, and even went to
jail in 1918 for publicly encouraging anti war ideology during World War I. Russell is widely
considered to be an incredibly influential thinker and writer. One of his popular works, The
Conquest of Happiness, discusses the unhappiness that many ordinary people suffer from and how
to fix it. The first nine chapters detail causes of unhappiness, including pessimism, competition,
excitement, and emotional fatigue. Russell displays many scenarios in which these qualities are
present and why they cause such unhappiness to begin with. He then spends seven more chapters
explaining what causes happiness, including an individual s relationships with their jobs, spouses,
and other family. He demonstrates the reasons why these are so effective in creating happiness in
people and how these goals can be reached. The book overall preaches contentment rather than total

U.s. Relations With The Cuban Government
CUBA: Libre
Is it a good idea to open relations with the Cuban Government? It has been more than eighty
years since a US President has visited Cuba. The two nations have had no diplomatic relations
since 1961. One may ask how beneficial for the US to conjoin forces with Cuba? Improving
relations with Cuba will benefit American Government because of what it can learn about health
care, disaster preparedness, tourism and Trade. On March 20, 2016 President Obama arrived in
Havana, Cuba with his family. It has been more than eighty years since a sitting U.S. president has
visited Cuba. President Calvin Coolidge was the last President to visit Cuba in 1928. When Fidel
Castro (former President of Cuba) came into power in 1959 relations between the two countries
devolved into arguments. Cuba is a communist country and the U.S. is a democracy. With these

The Federal Government Regulate The Insurance Industry
Background The federal government s role is in regulating industries is to protect consumers and
the market. There is an ongoing debate on whether the federal government should regulate the
insurance industry as a result of the bailouts stemming from the Financial Crisis of 2008. Currently,
state governments regulate the insuranceindustry. Proponents of federal regulationreason that states
are inefficient in the duty of insurance regulation. Additionally, the federal government has
economies of scale and may offer an increase in efficiency unlike state regulation. The federal
government regulates industries due to inherent systemic riskto the country s economic
environment. Systemic risk is the risk of collapse of an entire financial system or market.
(SOURCE) For example, banking institutions such as Lehman Brothers, Merrell Lynch, and
Goldman Sachs were major contributors to the financial crisis in 2008 because these institutions
were systemically significant to the market. The insurance industry and the core activities of the
industry, however, were not a major contributor to near collapse of the American economy. The
federal government should not regulate the insurance industry because it does not possess a
systemic risk to the market economy, states have the ability and resources to regulate, and federal
regulation would result in unnecessary costs from the federal budget.

Descriptive Essay About Horses
My Symbol
Everyone has a symbol, something that has come to represent all that they are and all that they
hope to become. To understand the true heart and soul of a person, one must first understand who
it is that they hope to become. As George Bernard Shaw once said, Life is not about finding
yourself, it is about creating yourself. All people have something they strive toward and hope to
become. Horses have become for me the symbol of everything I want to be in life, strength,
determination, and compassion.
Throughout the ages horses have been a powerful symbol of strength and fearlessness. Equines are
some of the mightiest creatures in the world. It was the strength of the horse that helped to
revolutionize the world as we know it. Able to carry over thirty percent of their body weight and
pull over one hundred and fifty percent of their body weight, horses are an impressive symbol of
physical strength. Many stories and paintings have depicted the incredible power that horses
represent. Correspondingly, Job 39:19 22 says, Do you give the horse its strength or clothe its
neck with a flowing mane? Do you make it leap like a locust, striking terror with its proud
snorting? It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength, and charges into the fray. It laughs at fear,
afraid of nothing; it does not shy away from the sword. Yet what inspires me most about their
wonderful animals is not their physical qualities, it is simply the fact that horses of all shapes,
sizes, and

  • 2. 1820 Susan B. Anthony February 15 is an important date in my life, but not only for my life for the lives of others who were also born on this day. Even with the events that happen on this date they are still considered life changers. For some of us or maybe even all of us our birth was considered the best day of our life. Of course without that we wouldn t be here. There are going to be things in life that we are going to be remembered for. There are also going to be impacts that happened to shape the world. This date to me not only is my birthday, but this is the date that a major change to the world was made. On February, 15, 1820 Susan B. Anthonywas born. Another big event would be when the USS Maine was supposedly blown up. During that time America was trying to be at peace with Spain without having any more ships invaded. Due to the explosion America decided that Spain was involved and that there should be a war. This is what caused the Spanish American War. The US was in the process of trying to form a treaty Burks2 with Spain to keep peace. The treaty was signed, but the information about the ship being bombed was false information. This event was a mistaken event that leads to chaos. On February, 15, 1933 there was a change in how the states handled the penalty of life and death. In the beginning the states would consider the death penalty of the murderers. This penalty included the electric chair, the gas chamber, hanging, a firing squad or even a lethal injection. The whole problem with the death penalty was the way that the system chose to carry out the decision. Some people had to wait a long time in order to have another chance in court. Some people argued that maybe that should be changed and only consider the murderers only for a life sentence. This event was a major issue and it changed how the penalty worked and ... • 3. Example Of Exothermic Reaction An exothermic reaction is one in which there is a release of energy (usually heat) from the system (Ashworth Little, 2001). In other words, the energy of the system decreases, and thus H is negative. Because heat is being transferred out of the system (i.e., the reaction requires no external energy source), exothermic reactions are self sustaining (Ashworth Little, 2001). Notable examples of exothermic reactions include combustionreactions, where oxygen(O2) reacts with another substance, usually to form carbon dioxide and water (CO2 + H2O) (Kung Lerner, 2014). Combustion can be seen in many facets of everyday life, from wood fires to the engines of many vehicles (the combustion of gasoline has the following chemical equation: 2C8H18 + 25O2 + 2N2 12CO2 + 4CO + 4NO + 18H2O + heat this illustrates the convention of placing heat in a chemical equation, which, if listed as a product, is an indicator of an exothermic reaction; this equation is also an example of incomplete combustion, since an ideal combustion reaction would have no products save carbon dioxide and water; often, the oxygen fueling a combustion reaction is consumed before complete combustion can occur (Lew, 2015)). On a smaller scale, exothermic reactions can be used to create heating devices such as hand warmers, which can be calibrated (by analyzing the change in heat of the chemicals involved in the device) to produce an optimal amount of heat. [SOME MORE] Endothermic reactions, conversely, are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Stephen King Why We Crave Horror Movies Summary Horror Movies: An Outlet for Insanity We are all insane. Thus, man is evil. Stephen King declares this belief in his essay Why We Crave Horror Movies , adding his opinion to the extensive debate on the nature of humankind. Those who believe man is evil are also unable to deny their own corruption. Therefore, in order to move on from this distress, they come to accept this apparently inevitable characteristic of humanity. As long as they confine their hidden desires with seemingly ordinary activities, such as watching horror movies, the frontier that distinguishes what society deems as acceptable will remain uncrossed. In fact, King himself has gained tremendous success by taking advantage of the enjoyment he receives from horror stories and creating a career out of it; he became successful by indulging in his corrupt fantasies. However, I disagree with King. I do not believe that man is purely evil as insanity is too subjective to be an appropriate... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He believes everyone is insane, making sanity only a matter of degree (Paragraph 8). In society, identifying what stands out, what is too unique, is an easy task. Those who are extremely different from the majority s norms and values cannot be welcomed into society; instead, they are isolated in asylums and prisons. On the other hand, the boundaries of sanity is not as clear. We do not identify those who fit well into society as extremely normal . If we are asked to define what normal is, we reply with synonyms, base the definition off of abnormality, or identify the ordinary as something widely accepted. However, if an insane person is surrounded by other mentally ill individuals, is he/she no longer insane? This issue then becomes an example of philosophical thought experiments, similar to the question: If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there, does it still make a ... A 5 4 decision by The United StatesSupreme Court on June 26th, 2015 ended all state bans on same sex marriage and requires all fifty states to recognize marriages legally performed in other states. Immediately after this historic decision was made, in disobedience of the Supreme Court, Texas attorney general said, that county clerks can refuse to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples if they object on religious grounds. This was Texas initial reaction to the ruling. Former Texas Gov. Diversity In The Workplace Diversity in the Workplace Diversity in the workplace is imperative even though some commentators argue that too much diversity can be negative. Diversity can lead to staff feeling threatened or even annoyed by persons with views and backgrounds different from their own (Barsoux, Strebel and Manzoni, 2010). Instead of inclusivity, diversity can end up causing conflicts, as some staff are reluctant in changing their viewpoints and are less adaptable to change. Trying to exclude diverse people from the workforce will essentially exclude them from society, which is not only regressive and divisive but it would send the economy into turmoil as a result of how diverse the UK is. Besides, a lack of diversity will lead to less innovative strategies as different individuals from different backgrounds wield different experiences and viewpoints. It is argued that If an organization does not leverage the potent weapon of diversity, it risks limiting its creative potential and ultimately losing its competitive edge (Ey.com, 2017). To ensure that diversity is not undermined in the workplace the Equality Act was enacted. The Equality Act, prohibits positive discrimination, but it does allow for positive action. Positive action is when an employer takes steps to help or encourage certain groups of people with different needs, or who are disadvantaged in some way, access work of training (citizensadvice.org.uk, 2017). In the 1920 s it was a rare find to know a person whom had been divorced, today it is a rarity not to know of one who has been, or will be divorced. Sometimes divorce may be the only way to solve the various problems a family may have. Custody When parents become divorced there are many decisions that they must come to an agreement upon. How will are possessions be divided? and What will happen to the children? are often the most asked questions when divorce occurs. Custody is almost always the largest battle when husband and wife become divorced. Custody includes all duties a parent owes a child including, food, shelter, protection discipline, education, and even a child s religious beliefs (Martin 32). Often, a judge must make custody decisions for the parents. There are several types of custody, but the most common are sole custody, joint legal custody, and joint physical custody. In sole custody, a single parent provides shelter and makes all important decisions for the child. In joint legal custody, the child lives with a single parent but decisions are agreed upon by both. Finally, in joint physical custody the child lives with each parent for equal periods of time and important decisions may be made by either one, or both parents (Furstenberg 32). Sole custody children often live with the custodial parent for two week periods and live with the non custodial parent for two day time periods (Wolchik 164). This gives the child a stable home to live in while also allowing the child to have a relationship with both parents. Of all different types ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Persuasive Speech On Domestic Violence ONE STEP TOWARDS JUSTICE: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Right now, right at this very instant, a silent war all across the nation is being waged. A violation of humanity, a crime that is least prosecuted, and a great threat endangering the lives of thousands of women and children daily. Of course, I am talking about harsh reality of domestic violence. We live in a time where domestic violence is kept a taboo subject, a shameful secret that shouldn t be let out. We know it s happening, and even hear or see the events. But who s taking action? I can stand here and give you a list of statistics about this issue, but is that all it is? A statistic? Sadly enough, people look at this endless crime as just a figure or percentage, we re shocked at first but nothing more. So today, I am taking the first step, a step towards justice, a step to end the struggle, and a step to save our nation. And yes, I m not anyone special, I don t study the topic, nor am I a survivor of domestic violence myself. But I m here to tell a story. I m here to make a change. And I m here to encourage all of you to do the same. I m going to share an experience I had. Something that I ve regretted and hated myself for since, knowing that help could ve been sought earlier. A few years back, I was catching up with a family member and noticed a faint bruise on her face. Naturally, I asked her what had happened but she just brushed it off, told me it was nothing but a sport injury. Weeks progressed, and the bruises became worse and worse, but I stop questioning. To me, she still seemed the happy go lucky girl I knew and loved, the only difference were these markings. But let me tell you, sometimes the people who seem happiest, are actually hurting the most. And this was exactly the case. Flashforward a few months, and her partner was being trialled and charged under the case of domestic abuse. Although there were so many signs, my ignorance restrained me from helping her help herself. Needless to say, I was absolutely disgusted. And to this day, I still can t even begin the fathom how anyone could possibly put their hands on someone they loved. To purposely harm their significant other and act like everything is fine. And to the victims who have to live ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Financial Crisis And Its Effects On Financial Institutions The recent financial crisis has a huge impact on systemic Important Financial Institutions; it s distressing effect can be felt in almost every business area and process of a bank. A fairly large literature investigates the impact of financial crisis on large, complex and interconnected banks. The great recession did affect banks in different ways, depending on the funding capability of each bank. Kapan and Minoiu (2013) find that banks that were ex ante more dependent on market funding and had lower structural liquidity reduced supply of credit more than other banks during crisis. The ability of banks to generate interest income during the financial crisiswas hampered because there was a vast reduction in bank lending to individuals and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Recent studies have investigated the impact of the 2007 2009 financial crises on banks capital. Berger and Bouwman (2011) emphasised the importance of capital during financial crisis. Their empirical study concludes that banks with solid capital base have some benefits during the crisis than those that are poorly capitalised. Well capitalised banks are more able to withstand the shocks due to liquidity squeeze, and therefore had higher chances of surviving the crisis period. Other benefits accrued to well capitalised banks include increase in their market share and profitability, as customers withdrew their funds from less capitalised to a well capitalised banks. This conclusion was also reinforced by a recent empirical study conducted Olivier de Bandt et al (2014) on a sample of large French banks over a period of 1993 2012. Similarly, Gambacorta and Marques Ibanez (2011) demonstrate the existence of structural changes during the period of financial crisis. They conclude that banks with weaker core capital positions, greater dependence on market funding and on non interest sources of income restricted the loan supply more strongly during the crisis period. To give some background, before Nelson Mandela became the first black president of South Africa (which made his presidency very historic), he had been a prisoner on Robben Island for almost 30 years while South Africawas under the cruel regime of Apartheid. Apartheid was introduced in 1948 by the white National Party government to make segregation between whites and blacks legal. When Mandela was elected president, he inherited a country that was still pretty fresh out of 50 years of Apartheid rule. Attitudes by whites and blacks don t change overnight just because there is a new president. There was huge racial tensions and rampant poverty to deal with. Crime rates were also high. Mandela was very concerned about violence erupting between whites and non whites. Rather than live with bitterness and resentment over his imprisonment and the terrible treatment of the black population, Mandela chose the route of forgiveness and looked for a way to bring the country back together. Sport can be enjoyed by all parts of the population whether rich or poor, black or white, educated or not. When Mandela publicly supported the mostly white Springbok rugby team, as a black president, he was leading by example. What he did was completely unexpected both in the eyes of whites and non whites. He gained the trust of whites and helped blacks see that the only way to move forward in a positive way was to forgive the sins of the past and work for reconciliation. • 15. Lab Report Determination Of Empirical Formula Of Magnesium... Andrea Jais AP Chemistry Mrs. Wright Block 2 The Determination of the Chemical Formula of Magnesium Oxide Conclusion The purpose of this lab was to find the empirical formula of magnesium oxide. The empirical formula of a compound is the simplest formula based on the number of different atoms in that compound. In this lab, the student burned magnesium, in the form of a ribbon, which bonded with oxygen to form magnesium oxide. The mass of oxygen was calculated by subtracting the mass of the magnesium ribbon from the mass of the magnesium mass. The masses of magnesium and oxygen were converted into moles, which was used in the calculation of the empirical formula. The mass of the magnesium oxide was determined by subtracting the combined mass ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is due to the fact that our hands have oils and dirt that could have unintentionally increased the mass of the magnesium oxide. As a result, the mass of the oxygen would be higher than its actual mass, which would displace the mole ratio. If a student allowed a significant amount of white smoke to escape while heating the magnesium, this would affect the moles of oxygen. The white smoke is gaseous magnesium oxygen, which contributes to the final mass of magnesium oxide. If the smoke escapes, the total mass of magnesium oxide will be smaller, which in turn will result in a smaller mass of oxygen and smaller number of oxygen moles. The tarnished material that was removed from the magnesium ribbon was oxide. The oxygen in the air reacts with the magnesium and coats the ribbon with the oxide. If a student fails to remove the oxide, it would affect the calculated number of moles of magnesium and oxygen and the mole ratio. The extra oxide would add to the total mass of magnesium oxide, which would result in a larger mole number for oxygen. The oxide also adds extra mass to the magnesium ribbon, which results in a larger mass and mole number for magnesium. Since both mole numbers for the elements are affected, the calculated mole ratio would also be inaccurate. If a student never added water to the crucible, the number of moles for oxygen will be affected. This is due to the fact that some of the magnesium will react with the nitrogen in the air to form magnesium nitride. This will add to the mass of magnesium oxide and in turn increase the number of oxygen moles. If the experiment were repeated with twice the amount of magnesium, theoretically the empirical formula should not change. However, the empirical formula could change if the lab was performed under different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I stepped off of the cracked sidewalk so I could turn on to the next street, but a seven foot tall metal pole with an octagon challenged me at the sharp corner. The top of the vibrant red sign had an emerald rectangle attached to it that read S BARWICK PL in white text with the same colored border. The word STOP that was written in the middle of the geometric shape was meant for passing cars, felt like it was meant for me as if I needed to head somewhere rather than home. Thinking about if I should turn left on to Barwick or turn towards the dead end, my feet moved without my brain telling them to. • 31. Sylvia Plath Metaphors Metaphors by Sylvia Plath was written in 1959. It is a lyric poem that uses metaphors to create a riddle, as she states in line one. Plath is using a narrator voice in her poetry to describe her pregnancy with the use of metaphors and her ambivalence to her current state. The narrator is mocking herself and I find her mocking tone to pregnancy as something I want to incorporate in my writing when writing about my character s eating disorder. The poem starts with the narrator announcing herself as a riddle in nine syllables. The nine syllables is the first hint that the poem is going to be about pregnancy. Plath correlated the use of the word nine to the length of a pregnancy, giving the reader an inkling of what is to be expected of the poem. The narrator then goes on to describe herself as an elephant, then a house, two very distinctively large objects. She is now mocking the weight gain caused by pregnancy and she furthers this by comparing herself to a melon, strolling on two tendrils. These lines give the reader a vivid imagery of someone that has become stout and is struggling to do normal tasks such as walk. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the poem she uses vivid imagery to convey the feelings of emotional suicide. The poem begins with an answer to the question why do you want to die? she answers this question by starting the poem with since you ask and takes the reader through a journey where the final destination is committing suicide. In her poetry, she does not use the voice of the narrator like the way Plath does, instead it is more of a conversational piece. Her poetry is confessional and written in her point of view, whereas with Plath s poems I ve mentioned before, there is a disconnect where the reader reads it in the voice of the narrator, instead of Plath s voice. In the poem, she notes that her body is a physical bad prison that should be emptied completely in order to finally be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Rhetorical Devices In The Crisis No 1 Thomas Paine In 1776, an important event was happening in the United States, the Revolutionary war. The thirteen colonies wanted to break away from Britain s rule, however the chances of winning were very slim. For this reason, 1/3 of the citizens were for a revolution, 1/3 of the citizens were against it, and 1/3 of them were undecided. Thomas Paine realized that to become a free and independent nation, he would need the help of every citizen in the colonies. Because of this he wrote The Crisis No. 1 to increase the morale of the people, so that they would fight against Britain in the war. In The Crisis No. 1 Thomas Paine effectively used rhetorical devices to convince people to fight in the revolutionary war. Thomas Paine begins by alluding to the Declaratory ... As a result, there are an extra amount or not enough sets of chromosomes in the cells created which causes disorders in those affected. The effects of nondisjunction include the following diseases: Down syndrome, Patau s syndrome, Edward s syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, and Turner s syndrome. Mendelian and non Mendelian inheritance patterns determine how certain traits are passed on to the next generation. Mendelian patterns are autosomal dominant inheritance, which causes Marfan syndrome and Huntington disease, and autosomal recessive inheritance, which causes cystic fibrosis and sickle cell disease. Non Mendelian patterns of inheritance include polygenic and mitochondrial inheritance. Polygenic inheritance is seen in the inheritance of traits like skin color and height and can cause heart diseases and cancer. In mitochondrial inheritance, also known as maternal inheritance, DNA in the mitochondria is passed down primarily from the mother. This form of inheritance causes some disorders like Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy and Kearns Sayre syndrome may occur. Epigenetic inheritance is an unusual process in which epigenetic tags created by a parent s experience can be passed on to their offspring. • 34. Comparison Between Night And Fog In 1956, just a few years after the Holocaust came to an end, director Alain Resnais released the documentary Nuit Et Brouillard meaning Night and Fog. The film is presented in both color and black and white, and is narrated in French by Michael Bouquet. In the film, the abandoned grounds of Nazi concentration camps Auschwitz and Majdanek are pictured. As images of the camps are shown, the narrator describes one of the most devastating historical events in detail. Each element of the film come together to create an incredibly raw and evocative portrayal of the atrocities that occurred during the Holocaust. The director of Night and Fog, Alan Resnais, had a great interest in creating films that were concerned with war. This interest may be due in part to his own involvement in the armed forces when he was a young adult. This particular piece of his work was extremely successful, and it is considered by many to be the most important film addressing the Holocaust. When compared to most work centered around the Holocaust, Night and Fog is an incredibly honest depiction of the atrocities that occurred. Many creative elements that contribute to the overall impact of the film are incorporated in Night and Fog. Present day images of the abandoned concentration camp grounds are shown in color, whereas flashbacks of the camps during the Holocaust are shown in black and white. As the images are shown the film is being narrated in French by Michael Bouquet. He maintains a dark and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Benefits of a Liberal Arts Education The strength of a liberal arts education is the strong, varied foundation it provides over a wide spectrum of subjects. A liberal arts education is aimed at teaching you how to think. It helps you to develop strength of mind, and an ordered intellect. This broad based education allows students to create new theories, discoveries, and connections between fields. With such expansive roots, great innovators can build and expand from what others have learned, instead of wasting effort on rediscovery of what is already known. With the knowledge of a subject s strengths and capabilities, and weaknesses and restrictions, students can combine traits of different subjects to formulate new and more complicated concepts. New colors can only come from mixing those which already exist. The pigment of a new color depends on the shades and hues of the colors used to create it. Such is true for education. The resulting ideas are a sterling product of the compatibility of the subjects blended to create it. What vocational schools have in central focus, they lose in direct focus. Enormous concentration in one area pigeon holes, severely limiting the range of career opportunities. A liberal artseducation on the other hand, teaches one how to think, and how to apply this to a variety of subjects. Both aspects have their strengths and their downfalls. However, one can hardly say the liberal arts is useless and should be tossed aside in the modern day. A better understanding of education comes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. The Novel The Handmaid s Tale The effect of words, powerless and innocent as they are, depending on the one who combines them can have good and evil outcomes. In the hands of Margaret Atwood, she used her knowledge and different interpretation of words in her dystopian novel The Handmaid s Tale in a very indirect and devious way making her novel a treasure hunt in search of these key words for the understanding of the novel. The novel takes place in Gilead, a very dark future of the United States, governed by a theocratic government which oppresses women by making them handmaids in the name of religion to cure the infertility of the population. The double entendre diction which exists throughout the whole novel adds subliminal hints on the charactarisation of the characters, such as Offred, and to the story itself, such as the religious political system that governs Gilead, which is a double entendre in itself. These different plays on diction proves the oppression of our main character and proves how powerful language can be. The main character of this novel, Offred, proves to be very analytical in her thoughts in various instances in the novel but the reader can t understand the complete meaning of this. For example, when Offred was talking about her daily routine after getting up from bed and sitting in the chair and think about the word char. It can also mean the leader of a meeting. It can also mean a mode of execution. It is the first syllable in chanty. It is the French world for flesh. None of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The two nations have had no diplomatic relations since 1961. One may ask how beneficial for the US to conjoin forces with Cuba? Improving relations with Cuba will benefit American Government because of what it can learn about health care, disaster preparedness, tourism and Trade. On March 20, 2016 President Obama arrived in Havana, Cuba with his family. It has been more than eighty years since a sitting U.S. president has visited Cuba. President Calvin Coolidge was the last President to visit Cuba in 1928. When Fidel Castro (former President of Cuba) came into power in 1959 relations between the two countries devolved into arguments. Cuba is a communist country and the U.S. is a democracy. With these differences it s hard for both the counties to see eye to eye. Up until now, both countries used Switzerland as a mediator if they needed to talk. • 41. The Federal Government Regulate The Insurance Industry Background The federal government s role is in regulating industries is to protect consumers and the market. There is an ongoing debate on whether the federal government should regulate the insurance industry as a result of the bailouts stemming from the Financial Crisis of 2008. Currently, state governments regulate the insuranceindustry. Proponents of federal regulationreason that states are inefficient in the duty of insurance regulation. Additionally, the federal government has economies of scale and may offer an increase in efficiency unlike state regulation. The federal government regulates industries due to inherent systemic riskto the country s economic environment. Systemic risk is the risk of collapse of an entire financial system or market. (SOURCE) For example, banking institutions such as Lehman Brothers, Merrell Lynch, and Goldman Sachs were major contributors to the financial crisis in 2008 because these institutions were systemically significant to the market. The insurance industry and the core activities of the industry, however, were not a major contributor to near collapse of the American economy. The federal government should not regulate the insurance industry because it does not possess a systemic risk to the market economy, states have the ability and resources to regulate, and federal regulation would result in unnecessary costs from the federal budget. • 44. Descriptive Essay About Horses My Symbol Everyone has a symbol, something that has come to represent all that they are and all that they hope to become. To understand the true heart and soul of a person, one must first understand who it is that they hope to become. As George Bernard Shaw once said, Life is not about finding yourself, it is about creating yourself. All people have something they strive toward and hope to become. Horses have become for me the symbol of everything I want to be in life, strength, determination, and compassion. Throughout the ages horses have been a powerful symbol of strength and fearlessness. Equines are some of the mightiest creatures in the world. It was the strength of the horse that helped to revolutionize the world as we know it. Able to carry over thirty percent of their body weight and pull over one hundred and fifty percent of their body weight, horses are an impressive symbol of physical strength. Many stories and paintings have depicted the incredible power that horses represent. Correspondingly, Job 39:19 22 says, Do you give the horse its strength or clothe its neck with a flowing mane? Do you make it leap like a locust, striking terror with its proud snorting? It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength, and charges into the fray. It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; it does not shy away from the sword. Yet what inspires me most about their wonderful animals is not their physical qualities, it is simply the fact that horses of all shapes, sizes, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
